Editor’s note

W

ell, here we are in mid-spring and lo and behold, the sun appears to be making an appearance! I know that by simply stating that fact, he will probably run away and hide again until 2014 but for now at least, let’s enjoy. Our May issue is jam packed with great features and, if you’re a regular reader, you may notice a little change. We’ve decided to split our wonderful magazine into two very definite sections. The first half is focussed on lifestyle, fashion, beauty and so on whilst the second half is dedicated entirely to business. We have some amazing case studies and profiles this month as well as a great feature focussed entirely on travel safety. With the summer holidays approaching fast we appreciate just how difficult it is to have a relaxing family holiday so take a look at our page 23 If you have a business and are thinking about the pros and cons of exhibiting your wares, take a look at our Baby Show Feature and our Harrogate Highlights to see what other companies think of the whole exhibiting game. There are lots of changes taking place here so do stay tuned to be the first to find out about them. Take a look at our fantastic new website www.mumpreneur-magazine.com and download our free app from the app store now. For the time being, enjoy our May issue and as always, let us know what you think. My contact details can be found below. Laura

o you remember the dreaded six week check up with your GP and the subject of getting back to having sex? How the prospect of resuming intimacy after childbirth caused anxiety? Many women experience vaginal dryness predominantly due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, after childbirth and especially whilst breast-feeding. This can make sex painful, which of course affects the relationship with our partners. Becoming a mother makes us more discerning about the quality of the food and products we buy for ourselves and for our young families. While we ensure that the goods we buy are safe, and free from potentially harmful ingredients, how many of us check the purity and safety of the ingredients in our chosen lubricant? Yes organic lubricants work in harmony with the body, moisturising and nourishing the sensitive intimate tissue of the vagina, and are recommended by Gynaecologists, GPs, Midwives and Doulas. Because Yes is free from parabens, petro-chemicals, glycerine, and all known skin irritants it is safe, pure and gentle. Yes is also pH balanced to protect against thrush and bacterial infections and to enhance our intimate health. When Dr Maria McGee combined her love of science and medicine with crafting, the result was Marble Hill and it’s range of natural skincare products. Mumpreneur Magazine spoke with Dr McGee to find out more about starting her business, and the products available today from Marble Hill. MM: Where did the brand name ‘Marble Hill’ originate? DMM: My husbands family come from Donegal, the most northerly county in Ireland, where they have owned a farm near Marble Hill Beach since the 1850’s. It was on this farm that Marble Hill was created.

MM: What is unique about Marble Hill? DMM: Marble Hill approach the skin in a very pro-active way. It’s not enough to treat dry, irritated skin – at Marble Hill we use natural oils to maintain the moisture and prevent drying in the first instance, by producing soaps with up to 10% free oils in every bar.

MM: So how did your business journey start? DMM: We moved to Northern Ireland in 2000 due to my husband taking up a new position in Derry, and we began to spend a lot of time on the farm at weekends. During my time there I discovered the well on the farm had always been highly regarded for it’s purity. Being interested in both science and crafts, this well gave me the idea to use it’s water in naturally based soaps. MM: Did you create the perfect product there and then, or was it a case of trial and error? DMM: Initially I began blending the spring water with essential oils to produce fragranced soaps, but I soon found that shea butter, neem oil, and other conditioning oils gave exceptional results for my son’s dry, irritated skin. MM: At what point did you realise the growth potential of your products? DMM: As a surgeon, my husband has to scrub up a lot, resulting in severe dermatitis on his forearms. Seeing how effective the results were on my son’s skin, my husband asked me to make him something to help. I created a blend that he found extremely effective, which we called SurgiSalve. It was from the creation of this products that things really started to grow. Whilst I had achieved a lot for my family’s skin issues, I knew that I had only just begun to tap the potential of these natural resources.

We achieve this by making every bar by hand using the traditional cold process which also retains the glycerine (a natural moisturiser) which is removed in the commercial milling process. A range of moisturisers containing nature-equivalent oils such as Jojoba and Argan oil to maintain the skin’s condition and suppleness every day can be provided. All of our moisturisers are 100% natural and guaranteed to be water and fragrance free. In fact they are edible!”

MM: Do you have any advice for people suffering skin complaints? DMM: Many people unwittingly cause their own problems using harsh detergent based cleansers which strip the protective oils from their skin, leaving it vulnerable. My first advice to everyone who asks me what they can do for their skin is “Read the label”. Very many people are sensitive to Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, so just checking can be a great help. All sorts of products contain these chemicals and other irritants, even skin wipes. You may be surprised what you find! MM: Which one is your favourite Marble Hill product? DMM: Many of my products are a direct response to the needs of my own family, such as the Health Scrub Bar. This is the only product to contain organic seaweed and essential oils, and has become a firm favourite with dandruff and acne sufferers. Then there is our foot cream - PediSalve which is recommended by chiropodists, podiatrists and doctors. It’s been a lifesaver for people who, like me, suffer from chronically dry, hard and cracked skin on their feet. MM: What do you hope the future holds for Marble Hill? DMM: The understanding of the benefits of natural skincare is growing fast, and we see demand for our products in every age group. We originally set up to trade online, but as demand for our products increases all over the UK, we have recently linked up with a distributor to allow customers to buy locally. Our next task is to raise our profile, and let even more people know what Marble Hill can do for them. Marble Hill’s unique range can be seen and purchased on www.marblehillonline.co.uk To stock Marble Hill, contact info@marblehillonline.co.uk or Tel: 02871357128

or those that want to indulge in one of this summer’s biggest trends, but aren’t feeling ready to dip their toes into the sea of Aztec and animal prints currently doing the rounds on the high-street, then the new season palette may be just what the doctor ordered. This summer’s cool ice cream shades in pastel hues of pink, blue and yellow. Washing over every item imaginable from romantic dresses, to the teeniest of shorts, to headbands and bags, candy-sweet colours have never looked so good. For the paler of complexion, a pair of spray-on skinnies or floaty chiffon skirt will keep lighter shades away from the face and prevent looking washed -out. Ease yourself into the trend with choice accessories and build up from there. Mixing and matching different colours is fine, but steer away from pairing two shades of the same together, a feat similar to the dreader double-denim disaster. This slouchy, laid-back yellow blazer is a relaxed take on tailoring this summer. It will pull outfits together nicely and without appearing too formal or ‘done’. Throw over a print dress or dark jeans and a t-shirt for day and lace or leather for after-dark. Part sixties chic, part playful and girlie, this Park Avenue dress by Marks and Spencer has pocket detailing and a drop-waist, breaking up the block colour. The sculpted neckline adds a sexy edge. Alternatively, show off a summer tan in these jaunty yellow denim shorts by Next. This gorgeous midi number from New Look is slightly Olivia Newton-John in Grease. The length and pleat detailing both tick the on-trend box for this summer. Pair it with River Island’s clear sky blue belt to add a modern edge.

Similarly, as we wouldn’t indulge in a 99’ Flake in the bleak winter months, this is one trend that will sadly disappear with the last of the summer wine. So pick a colour, or two, or three, and make the most of these jolly shades before they curdle.

How to look flawless and fabulous at the office. James Minahan, Makeup Artist

T

rying to feel and look good at work can sometimes feel like an uphill struggle. Thankfully, looking professional and polished at work is a lot easier than you may think, in this short guide I will share with you some of my do’s and don’ts for your workplace makeup to keep you looking polished and professional without spending an hour in front of the mirror. Skin – This is the single most important thing which will make or break you looking well rested, youthful and radiant. For the office I would avoid heavy foundation, especially very matt formulas. These can make your skin look dehydrated, enhance fine lines and large pores and actually make you look older I am loving some of the BB creams and tinted moisturisers which are on the market at the moment, these can be applied and blended to a mistake proof finish quickly with your fingertips. If you need extra coverage, use a good concealer to hide dark circles or blemishes where needed. Cheeks – Use a hint of blush in pale pink if you are fair, or apricot / peach tone if you are more olive to warm up your complexion, this should sit on your cheekbone and be a hint of colour as if you have just come into a warm room from the cold. No lines should be visible, you can always add more blush if needed but it’s more difficult to take away.

Eyebrows – The single thing which will make your face have more structure, look youthful and lifted - is your brows, I would advise getting them at least shaped professionally and then filling in any sparse gaps with a natural brow pencil. Use one as close to your natural brow colour as possible and apply with small light feathery strokes as if you were drawing tiny hairs. The Pat Butcher look or Scouse brows are a huge no-no. Lips – For work there are some beautiful tinted lip balms which give a mistake proof sheer hint of colour with high shine. Lip gloss has a tendency to go gunky, whilst lipstick tends to fade unevenly throughout the day when you may not have chance to reapply before an important meeting.

Eyes – Unless your work is on a makeup counter or behind the bar of a “gentleman’s club” save the sultry smoky eyes for drinks after work, you will feel much sexier looking over a cocktail with them in the evening than at 11am dealing with Barry from accounts. Keep your eye makeup neutral, try applying a medium toned shadow over the lid up to the crease, then use either a dark brown, grey pencil or a darker eye shadow to smudge a soft line right into the top lashes only. Apply a couple of coats of mascara and avoid clumps at all costs!

Take up a fresh challenge just for you

Being the only girl of two siblings it was my jewellery box to which her imagination took her. She started accessorising with my jewellery box, creating her own fashion statements whilst watching jewellery tutorials on the internet. I soon realised she throughly enjoyed it but that she also had a certain flair so I bought her a jewellery making kit. She started making personalised bracelets to match her outfits and once her friends saw them they loved them and wanted to be part of her trend. Parents began requesting that Chuniya make items for their children and over time, as good word spread, more and more people started to place orders, it was in this way that Niya Accessories was born. Chuniya now enjoys sitting down and making jewellery with her two best friends, Chelsea and Michelle. Not only is it a fun and creative past time for her and her friends but her designs bring pleasure to all those who order and wear them. Niya has loads to offer so make sure you keep looking out for her. You can order online or get in touch with her in several ways.

Is proud to present our 2013 Certificate of Excellence to...........

We love our mobile phones, and couldn’t manage without them. But following warnings from the World Health Organisation regarding links to brain cancer, we should consider any precautions that could be taken.

A

nd this is how Mumpreneur Magazine came across phoneShield and wi-fiShield. The natural quartz products are designed to help reduce exposure in order to alleviate the effects of any harmful radiation. We spoke to Derik Lattimer of Natural Health Products to find out a little more about the company, and why Mumpreneur Magazine have awarded him a certificate of excellence. Tell us a little more about your journey so far with phoneShield and wi-fiShield. When my business partner was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he was convinced that this was caused by the use of a mobile phone which is why we first became involved with the phoneShield and wi-fiShield products. The shields were developed and manufactured in the UK, using technology based on NASA’s use of quartz crystals in space and their sensitivity to radiation. The products have been primarily design to alleviate the effects of electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile phones and wifi devices which can be extremely harmful to health - especially young people whose immune systems are not fully developed. Through a variety of tests and testimonials with clinical feedback, we see an 83% success rate of relieving conditions caused by mobile phones or wi-fi devices. Both products are officially registered Class 1 Medical Devices, with the appropriate executive agency of the UK Department of Health, and bear the CE Mark. Already well established in the UK and International markets, the shields have won awards for the Best New Products showcase at the UK Natural Health Show.

Why are your products particularly suited to families? With more compelling evidence coming to light about the dangers of electro magnetic radiation (EMR) and electromagnetic fields (EMF’s) released from the regularly use of mobile phones, the phoneShield device helps to protect the whole family, and give peace of mind.

will be. Even on standby, the phone works harder in attempting to stay in contact and radiates even more electromagnetism. At night, it is advisable to switch off your Wi-Fi Broadband, and don’t keep you mobile phone in the bedroom.

Research shows that children are particularly vulnerable to the effects as their immune systems are not yet properly developed, and their lifetime of exposure to wire free technology and radiation will be longer. With many teenagers now owning a mobile phone, and using this frequently, they could be at risk. The phoneShield and wi-fiShield make it easy to take precautionary action for yourself and your family. It has a strong adhesive pad, and simply attaches to the back of your mobile phone, computer or laptop. It’s compatible with any model and has absolutely no effect on the transmission or signal of your devices, yet helps you and your family stay healthy. What advice would you give to someone concerned about the effects of harmful EMR/EMF’s? All manufacturers recommend holding the mobile phone handset away from the head - follow their advice and maximise the distance. Use the speaker facility where circumstances allow. It’s also worth changing ears every 5 minutes, and texting should be safer than phoning.

Travel Safety

Travel Safety

We know just how important travel safety is, especially during the summer months. Holidays can be tricky with little ones but this lady is leading the way in family holiday safety! Wendy Shand has made booking a safe, family holiday...

Child’s Play! Wendy Shand, Founder of www.totstotravel.co.uk talks about her experience of growing her unique family travel business. Eight years ago we had to fish our two year old son out of an unenclosed swimming pool whilst on a family holiday in France. That was enough of a jolt to make me think that there had to be an easier and less frustrating way to holiday with underfives…and www.totstotravel.co.uk was the result. Now we have a very tight focus, providing handpicked, stylish holiday villas, fullyequipped for families with under-fives, all of which have been selected and inspected by my team to ensure suitability and peace of mind. On Identifying a Gap It was a classic case of spotting a problem, identifying a gap in the market and going for it. When I started the business in 2006, we featured just nine properties. I used to fly over to France or Italy and buzz around the countryside visiting and vetting properties, and advising houseowners on how they can make their holiday homes more appealing to the family market. I loved doing that but of course; it was not particularly scalable. Now I have a team of mums who are trained to do that for me. On Planning For Scalability This eye on growing a scalable company means that today, we feature more than 350 properties in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands and the UK. …And we’re consistently growing, year on year, with growth of 26% in takings for the year 2011/12. From the start, Tots to Travel has now sold more than £3.5 million worth of holiday accommodation. On Our Internet Strategy We are an internet travel company so our strategy is about understanding and finding the perfect family friendly holiday villas and then focussing on increasing traffic

and then converting it. 8 years on, it’s still such an unbelievably steep, yet exciting, learning curve. Working out how to sell online remains a big challenge in such a fast changing environment but it is well worth the effort as there are still so many opportunities out there. And part of this challenge is how businesses develop their social networks and create engagement. I really believe that businesses ignore the social buzz at their peril. Whilst we still have plenty of work to do on this front I think it is evident that this is a worthwhile area to be investing in and we are beginning to see an ROI. On Being Unique And of course, all the while competition increases so it’s about understanding our unique selling proposition (USP) and constantly innovating to stay ahead. There is no room for complacency. We concentrate constantly on improving our customer service, for example by offering extended ‘mum friendly’ opening hours or by using screen sharing technology during 1:1 consultations to help families to find what they are looking for more effectively.

necessary in order to understand how the ‘business machine’ actually works. And Finally…On Our Team To keep pace with our growth, our team has grown too. In fact we have now outgrown the outsourced business model that we started with and are finding that there are definite benefits to having a team, all in one place, growing, sharing and developing our knowledge and understanding of what we do. And the team is having to learn fast as well and they’re doing a great job. Being an online business is a challenge for all of us!

We’ve also launched our Essential Kit Guarantee which ensures that every villa has at least 20 items needed by families, including the obvious like cots and high chairs as well as black out blinds and hand blenders for making puree. On Measuring Results And I’m thrilled with the results; 90% rated Tots To Travel customer service as ‘great’ or ‘absolutely fantastic’, 97.4% of their customers have already, would do or would consider recommending Tots to Travel to their friends. And we are putting an enormous amount of time and energy into measuring what we do…this is so entirely

Preheat the oven to 200C Start by making the pancakes. To make the batter place 100g of flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl. Make a well in the centre and break the 2 eggs into it. Gradually whisk in 200ml of milk until well mixed. The consistency should be like thin single cream. Melt 1 tbsp of butter and add to the mix. Heat a large frying pan (approx 18cm wide) until hot, add some butter then reduce the heat to medium. Spoon in about 60ml of the batter and swirl it around so it covers the pan. After about 30 seconds turn the pancake over and cook for a further minute. Should be browned on both sides. Remove the pancake from the pan and set aside on a plate. Continue on until you have 6 pancakes. To make the filling. Finely slice the mushrooms and set aside. In a medium pan heat 1 tbsp of olive oil, add the mushrooms and sauté until soft then set-aside in a bowl. In the same pan heat 25g of butter, add 30g of flour and cook for 2 minutes then gradually whisk in 400ml of milk and cook for 3 minutes. If necessary add a little more milk, shouldn’t be too thick. Add the mushrooms and prawns, season to taste, finely chop 2 tbsp of dill and add. Remove the pan from the heat. Spoon the filling into each pancake, roll them up and place in a baking dish. Sprinkle the parmesan cheese over the top and place the oven for 15 minutes. When the pancakes are almost ready make the spinach. Heat 1 tbsp of olive oil. Add the spinach and cook it until it wilts. Season to taste. Remove the pancakes from the oven and serve with the spinach. mumpreneur-magazine.com

Hot smoked trout with ‘stuvad potatis’ Our Swedish heritage sometimes shines through in our recipes, like here with the “stuvad potatis” (potatoes in a dill and béchamel Sauce) side served with hot smoked trout from The Port of Lancaster Smokehouse. Over the year we run several themes to celebrate exciting ingredients, great suppliers and inspirational recipes.

Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 30 minutes Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 4 smoked trout fillets 600g new potatoes 50g fresh dill ½ cucumber 50ml white wine vinegar 1 lemon 20ml water 2 tsp caster sugar 40g butter 400ml milk 2 ½ tbsp flour 250g spinach 150ml crème fraiche 2 tsp horseradish cream 1 tbsp olive oil Salt Pepper

mumpreneur-magazine.com

How to cook 1. In a medium sized bowl mix together the vinegar, sugar, a pinch of salt and juice of half the lemon. Using a potato peeler cut the cucumber into fine slices leaving the middle part. Add the cucumber to the vinegar and sugar, mix together well and set aside. 2. Peel and cut the potatoes into cubes (approx1.5cm). Put them on to boil for 15 minutes until they are cooked. 3. While the potatoes are cooking make the béchamel sauce. In a heavy based saucepan heat the butter, add 2 ½ tbsp of flour and cook for 2 minutes then slowly add the milk, cook for a further 5 minutes until the sauce thickens, should be like double cream (if it becomes too thick add a little more milk). Add 2 tbsp of chopped dill and season with salt and pepper to taste. When the potatoes are ready mix them into the sauce. 4. In a small bowl mix the crème fraiche with the horseradish sauce. 5. In a large saucepan heat 1 tbsp of olive oil, add the spinach leaves and cook until they wilt. Season to taste. 6. Serve the trout on top of the spinach with the potatoes, pickled cucumber and horseradish sauce to the side. Garnish with dill and squeeze some lemon juice over the trout.

Websites Awards

A website should provide a memorable, productive, fun and easy experience for every visitor. From the navigation to the visual impact; relevant content to important contact details. Your website should sell to your ideal customer, and when we placed outselves into that customers shoes, we were proud to be able to award a selection of websites with our Gold, Silver and Bronze honours.

Oxfordshire mother-of-three launches new one-stop website to help families find the care they need.

Mumpreneur duo turn their love of parties into profit.

andy Stripe Party loves nothing more than helping people create stylish and memorable occasions by offering a wide range of carefully selected party products and lots of inspiration.

.totalcareonline.co.uk was launched just over a year ago to build up a big database for the care industry. It covers three main areas of care: CHILDCARE, ELDERLY CARE AND DISABILITY CARE.

You can choose from imaginative invitations, an extensive range of party ware, a variety of adorable accessories and get lots of creative ideas from our inspiration gallery and our shop by colour and theme sections on the website.

The website is the brainchild of Kathleen Walsh, an Oxfordshire mum of three, who has considerable experience in the childcare industry .... She set up TotalCareOnline after she and her Mum found it difficult to get the right care for her newly widowed, wheelchair bound grandfather.

The business is the creation of Kate Walton and Thea Raubitschek-Smith, two St Albans based mummies who met at an NCT class back in 2008. Four children and countless parties later, our love of creating magical parties was very apparent, as was our increasing frustration with the UK’s offering, so in 2012 Candy Stripe Party was launched to help other passionate parents in their search for a one stop experience for stylish parties at the click of a button.

It’s free for carers and families to put their details on the website, with a small fee from £15 to use the secure messaging service. Agencies for childcare, elderly and disabled care can put their details on the site for free and for just £25 they can advertise their jobs for a year, and a link direct to their websites.

“Winning our Mumpreneur UK website award was a real thrill and pat on the back. We believe this award provides credible recognition for the considerable amount of time spent designing a website for our customers that was beautiful, inspiring, but most of all easy to use and gives the customer the ability to browse and gain ideas in a variety of ways”. Just

Bake

Jo Shaw, from Nottinghamshire is a mother of two daughters, who set up Just Bake in 2012.

T

he online company specialises in selling baking supplies for the home baker and smaller bakeries. Just Bake offer a fabulous range of cupcake decorations, glitters, cupcake cases, wrappers, cutters, cake pop supplies and packaging. Just Bake was launched by Jo following an interest in baking from Jo’s early years, a young child baking with her mother. Now she has two young daughters (6 yrs and 10 yrs) and bakes cakes with them on a weekly basis. Jo found that there wasn’t a huge range of pretty cupcake decorations and baking products available on the high street. With this in mind and a desire to create a beautiful website that is easy to navigate around and a pleasure to shop from, Just Bake was launched. The development of the Just Bake website has been helped by Jo’s 15 year marketing career. Jo loves having her own business, she advised that the positive aspects include “being in control of the company, having the ability to ‘make things happen’ and being able to work flexibly around the children and home life.”

Starting my own business worked like a ‘charm’ and fulfilled my dream.

B

éatrice de Montille is the founder of Merci Maman, an online shop that specialise in bespoke jewellery that is engraved by hand. “I created Merci Maman from my kitchen table in 2007. Having just had my second child, creating my own business and working from home was a great way to continue having a professional life with the flexibility to look after my children. Merci Maman translates as “Thank You Mummy” – a reference to my French roots – and celebrates the special bond between mother and child. My first range of charm bracelets focused on this bond with a selection of charms engraved with children names and their dates of birth.” Merci Maman is now in its 6th year and offers an extended range of bespoke jewellery for any occasion; from a love token engraved with a special date or place to celebrate anniversaries, inspiring presents for a Birthday with a quote from a favourite book or even a heart-felt keepsake from a bride to her bridesmaids to simply say thank you. As every piece is made to order, the possibilities are endless. Their Men’s range has grown very popular with a selection of personalised sterling silver bracelets, cufflinks and key rings. An easy problem-solver for your forthcoming Father’s Day shopping! They are also embracing fashion trends with their new Neon Collection launched last month. Beatrice, now a mum of four, and her team of five women dedicated to quality and customer satisfaction will hand craft your bracelet from start to finish in their Fulham studio and will gift wrap your treasures in their distinctive orange box sealed with a bow.

Just Bake has grown significantly during 2012 and Jo has huge plans for the future. One of the biggest successes in 2012 was when Just Bake was accepted by the award-winning, multimillion-pound online marketplace www.notonthehighstreet.com as one of their partners.

ntroducing Kate Rea, the mumpreneur beind Auraley, an exciting new brand of luxury sleepwear for children aged 2 to 8. Although a successful city lawyer, Kate had always dreamt of combining her love of creative design with her entrepreneurial spirit. Upon the birth of her children in 2009, it occured to Kate that there was no reason to delay making her dream a reality. The seeds of Kate’s vision for a new luxury sleepwear brand for little one’s started to take shape and in 2012 Auraley was born. Mumpreneur Magazine spoke to Kate to find out more about Auraley, and the inspiring mumpreneur behind the brand....

mumpreneur-magazine.com

Mumpreneur of the month When it comes to business... If you love your product, someone else will too!

MM: What inspired you to start Auraley? KR: Quite simply, a love of childrens fashion. My friends were all having children, which resulted in a lot of gift purchases - not to mention buying things for my own children. I’ve always loved nightwear, butstruggled to find nicely styled childrens products within these ranges. Through my shopping efforts I discovered that there was a gap in the market for nice, quality nightwear and I wanted to be the one to provide that. It combined my love of fashion with my creative side - something which as a lawyer I was unable to investigate within my career. MM: What makes Auraley’s nightwear so special? KR: It’s quality, it’s style... It’s simply unique. It often feels as though no effort, time or love is put into the design and fitting of such products by other companies. I wanted to make a change. Auraley’s products are admittedly a luxury item - but as well as this, they’re a wardrobe staple. We always use organic cotton and other eco-friendly fabrics, and will never compromise on our ethics - something that can be rare to find in the fashion world today.

MM: As Mumpreneur of the Month, what advice would you give to those looking to start up in business? KR: Take it slow and steady. It took years for us to find a good manufacturer, but by taking our time we were able to find an amazing company that we really enjoy dealing with. I’d also say that research is the most crucial thing when setting up a business, so research everything. You can go into business blind. And finally, remember - if you love it, someone else will love it.

Browse the Auraley collection or buy online at

www.auraley.com

MM: As a relatively new business, what challenges or successes have you experienced to date? KR: It’s always difficult to start a luxury business, let alone in a bad economy. So from the word go, it was important to ensure that the right market research was carried out, and that the company would succeed despite the current economic climate. I wanted to prove to myself that I could take an idea and turn this into a physical product that people wanted to buy - and I’m very proud of myself for managing to achieve this. It’s particularly inspiring to me when I receive customer feedback from people who love the products I dreamt up and created. MM: What does the future hold for Auraley? KR: The focus for the future is to continue growing the brand. This includes taking part in the ‘Bubble’ Trade Show in June, and expanding into more boutiques. I will be taking Auraley internationally, with a heavy focus on the Japanese market. mumpreneur-magazine.com

But not everybody has a brilliant business idea, or has the time and funds to start their own business from scratch. But that’s not to say it cannot be done. If you’re looking for a ready made business, with a trusted brand behind it to assist with growth and development, then look no further. Mum of 3, Lucy, from Cheltenham has recently made the decision to start a business that fitted around her childrens’ school hours. When she came across a kids party franchise available in her local area, her decision was easy. “I found the franchise opportunity just two weeks ago through Mumpreneur’s recommendation, and I’m just about to undergoing a two-day training programme before launching my business next month.” “Having never run a business before, knowing the support and training is available to me is priceless, and I’ll be running my business within six weeks of first seeing the advert. I’d recommend Mumpreneur Magazine’s “Business Opportunities” to any parent looking for an opportunity to get back into work.”

Helping you get started in business.

Business Opportunities

e understand better than anyone the advantages of starting your own business. Home-based businesses, and opportunities with flexible working hours are particularly suited to parents who are looking to strike the balance between family life and work.

When it comes to running your own business, there are a number of options to choose from, including: 1. Start from Scratch – If you’ve got a unique idea, with the creativity and drive to make it happen, starting your business can be a rewarding route to take, but if you need a little extra support, why not click on www.mumpreneuruk.com for a list of useful websites and resources. 2. Franchise – If you have the start-up capital to purchase a franchise you not only get the “business in a box”, but you benefit from the brand recognition, support and training as well as connections, suppliers and experience. 3. Direct Sales – With similar benefits of the Franchise option, direct selling opportunities usually only require a small initial payment, if any, and the ability to earn commission on all sales. Whilst you will be running and marketing your business, this can be a great way to gain experience in business before taking the plunge on starting up solo. So, whether you’re looking to earn as little as an extra £100, or as much as £100,000, Mumpreneur Magazine recommends the following business opportunities.

No Boundaries, Better Results.

I wanted something which would help families, just like myself, save and make some money. So I launched the first Little Pickles Market in Winchester, back in September 2010 with just £200 to get the business started. The launch was a huge success and the markets snow balled form there.

L

ittle Pickles Markets has grown in just two and a half years from having one Market Organiser in Hampshire UK to now having twenty-four Market Organisers running Markets in seven different counties across the UK and the business is growing all the time. Being a busy mum to four Little Pickles of my own I was frustrated with having to sell the hundreds of unused toys and clothes on ebay and waiting for them to be sold and selling at Car Boot sales was unrealistic with four children in tow . When what I really needed was some extra cash and some much needed free space in my home, fast!

I now have a fantastic team of hard working organisers running markets across the country, delivering an excellent service to our stall holders and buyers. Also we are excited to be launching our very first Little Pickles Baby and Toddler Show in Dorset on May 2th and hope to be rolling them out across the country in the near future. For further information please visit our website www.littlepicklesmarkets.co.uk, like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter @littlepicklesmk

That’s when my business idea of starting Little Pickles Markets was born. I wanted to create an indoor market where buyers could browse tables full of pre-loved babies and childrens items, without having to rush around, in push chair friendly venues and pick up arm fulls of bargains. We all love finding bargains and with the cost of raising children soaring, mumpreneur-magazine.com

Baby Show Features RDT Technology Ltd are proud to announce our appointment as exclusive importers of the Baby Banana Brushes for UK and Europe.

How were Baby Banana Brushes born? A few years ago, my two-year-old grandson tripped and fell on his toothbrush as he was trying to brush his teeth. The traditional hard plastic toothbrush punctured the roof of his mouth and came within a centimetre of entering his brain. As a mother of eight, I knew that this all-too-common occurrence of babies falling on hard toothbrushes should be preventable, but how? I discussed this with my daughter-in-law, a dental hygienist, and with her insight the idea for a flexible infant toothbrush was born. We knew we had created something unique, a flexible toothbrush and teether in one. - Sandra Phillips.

Best of the Birmingham NEC Baby Show on 17th-19th May.

We believe in designing joyful, stylish and practical clothing that both baby and parents will love. Thoughtfully designed here in the UK, our range includes kimono style rompers, vests and double knottie hats in a range of beautiful colours. We also offer swaddling blankets and Bambuteez – our unique footwear for babies, all made in our signature organic cotton and bamboo mix. Whether buying for your own baby, or as a gift, you’ll find we have a wonderful range of gift box combinations. All of our products come gift wrapped – in planet friendly packaging of course! Overcoming Entrepreneurial Block

For an aspiring entrepreneur, entrepreneurial block can be crippling.

During a lengthy bout of entrepreneurial inertia, it can be tempting to cast your start up dreams aside, and stick to living a more conventional working life. Cultivating new concepts can feel an impossible task and your entrepreneurial journey can feel fraught with failure before it’s even begun. You needn’t give up though, as there are ways to instigate ideas and methods that’ll help ease the creative process. Sometimes ideas have to be urged, so here’s five ways you can set about urging them... Firstly, consider your strengths and ponder your passions ‘Pondering your passions’ might sound a little pretentious but it’s something that can really exacerbate creativity, as by knowing a product, issue or industry inside out, you’ll know better how it can be improved. Elsewhere, considering your strengths can help crystalise ideas, as this’ll help you determine how best you can apply them to solving a problem or issue (more on this next..) Seek problems and see how you can fix them As I’ve alluded to, pondering things you’re passionate about can help here, but by merely taking some time to study the things around you, you’ll quickly see that the world is ripe with archaic products and industries ready to be improved. Jeff Bezos is perhaps the greatest living example of this disruptive entrepreneurialism. Through the prism of Amazon he’s dramatically altered the worlds of retail and publishing, addressing problems that previously faced consumers. He’s repeatedly asserted that this is Amazon’s aim, not profit margins, and

as a net worth of $24 billion dollars reflects, it’s a philosophy that’s worth sticking to. Keep your eyes and ears open Not all of us are as blessed as Bezos, so If you’re struggling to identify problems on your own, seek them elsewhere. See what’s causing your friends and family grief, spend some time trawling internet forums, keep your eyes and ears open wherever you go. Here in the UK people love a good moan, so listen and learn and think about how you can solve their issues. Inspiration can come from the strangest of places and a little looking, listening and learning can help instigate the creative process. Study ahead Something else that can help creatively is studying ahead. Cast an eye over government reports, examine trends and keep a keen eye on technological developments. A great example of those that did this are the early dot.com entrepreneurs who foresaw a growing trend, took a risk and many received huge rewards.

Although it may not always feel like it, there is a wealth of opportunities out there. It sometimes just takes a little time and study to find them. Finally, never fail to underestimate the power of cutting costs Something worth bearing in mind is the age old adage ‘price is paramount’. By merely cutting costs, you can draw customers in. If you can increase quality whilst doing so, even better. The success of ASOS reflects the sheer power of cutting costs. Their concept was to recreate the clothes worn by celebrities ‘As seen on screen’. Tapping into the culture of celebrity they created garments similar to the bigger name brands, providing mere mortals with the chance to dress like Rihanna, for a fraction of the cost. 13 years after their birth, their revenues are in the hundreds of millions. Clearly then, you don’t always have to innovate like Apple. How to become more effective at what you do?

S

o you have your wellcrafted business plan, some lovely business cards, possibly a website and a Facebook page. You’ve also invested time thinking about how to best reach your target market and thought about what will really engage your customers. But how much have you invested time thinking about how to make yourself more effective? People make a business a success. Business is all about relationships - relationships between you and your customers and relationships between the people responsible for your business. Being aware of your personal strengths and weaknesses is a really powerful thing when building relationships. When we are aware of something, we are more in control of it, we have more choice about what to do. As a solopreneur or part of a small team, individual styles and preferences are so important because even a small amount of conflict can break a smaller business. We are all different and we all bring key strengths. Understanding these key strengths and valuing the difference in others can really help to build relationships and help grow your business.

Quick tips to understand how you can start to become more effective at work: • Do you prefer to work alone and like space to think, or do you need someone else to keep your energy levels up and bounce ideas off? • When trying to understand something, do you prefer to start with the details or the bigger picture? • When making decisions do you listen to your head or your heart first? • Do you prefer to ‘go with the flow’ or prefer to have everything clearly planned out well in advance? We have helped many individuals and small teams become more effective and successful at what they do. If you think you or your business would benefit from understanding how you can be more effective, call us or visit www.aops.co.uk Steph Curnock is Managing Director and Business Psychologist at Amber. She uses her understanding of what makes people tick to help individuals and small teams become more effective at work.

Accounting... Easy As 1,2,3!

Meet Laura, mum to two little girls Anabel, 5 and 2 year old Emmeline, and full time business mum at Butlers Accountancy. The business was created following Laura’s maternity leave – a move that suits many business mums we know – so being a “mumpreneur” is something this chartered accountant understands better than anyone. Laura believes in looking after the people behind the business, and supporting other mumpreneurs as they start up and grow their businesses. But there are a few questions that just never fail to pop up during a chat with a start up business owner. Here, Laura Butler shares her Accounting FAQ’s.

There are a lot of things to consider when deciding whether you need an accountant – such as the size of your business, and how fast you plan to grow, and if anyone else relies on your business, such as employees and investors. Unless you’re confident with numbers, have the relevant experience and ample spare time, an accountant may be advisable. An accountant could help you to maximise profit, by helping you to focus on what works well and what isn’t working for you, as well as minimising your tax bill, which is always a bonus. And importantly, an accountant should save you time and energy, which are the most precious of commodities. What should I look for in an accountant? Anyone can call themselves an accountant, so check yours is registered with either the ICAEW (Chartered Accountant) or with AAT (Accounting Technician). You should then speak to, or meet with, the actual person who you will be dealing with on a day to day basis. You may be wooed by a partner, and then handed over to a junior. Are their hours flexible? Will you be able to speak to them when and where it suits you? Or will you need to arrange childcare, and get all dressed up to haul your cookies onto the high street? How should I do my book keeping? Keep it simple – something you can commit to. A nice folder by the front door that you can drop everything into on your way in, and even all the post you don’t open – like bank statements. At least you’ll know where they are! Then make it pretty and make it fun – treat yourself to a nice file box, get an envelope for each month to put your bank statement, credit card bill and all of your business expense receipts into. Depending on how busy or organised you are, you may need to transfer receipts to your box daily, weekly, or monthly. There

is no right option, but set a day and make sure you stick to it. It doesn’t take a lot of concentration, so you could even do it whilst you’re watching MasterChef! You can get the kids to help too, by making a pile for each month, and then pop that pile into an envelope. Do I need to be a limited company? The simple answer is... Sometimes. Factors to consider would be profit levels, whether you wanted to separate ‘you’ from ‘the business’ which may be important if you are at higher risk of being sued if something goes wrong. If you do work for a local council, they may insist that you are a limited company. Just bear in mind that there is more admin and more deadlines to keep on top of.

Do I need to keep receipts? Yes, for 5 years from 31 January after the tax year (e.g. 2012/13 records should be kept until 31 January 2019).

Do I need to register for VAT?

Get in touch...

If your sales in any 12 month period go over £79,000, then you will need to register.

How much can I pay myself? Essentially, you can pay yourself as much as you make in profit. It’s important to budget what you need to live on and look at how much you can make. It’s better to pay yourself a basic amount, than dip into business funds every time you go shopping. You can earn up to £9,440 this tax year, without paying any income tax. What expenses can I claim for? • Buying your stock or materials • Motor expenses – keep mileage records or fuel and expenses receipts. • Loan interest for any business or personal loans used to finance the business. • Expenses that are ‘wholly and exclusively’ incurred in the course of your business, or at least a ‘business use’ proportion of many other costs such as mobile and home phone cost, computer and internet costs. • Any items bought for use in the business • You can include a cost for using your home for your business of around £4.00 per week

T

he Harrogate Nursery Fair 2013 was held on 24th - 26th March, and Mumpreneur Magazine couldn’t wait to visit and see what new nursery products and brands were out there.

Babycup was born from the classic situation of not being able to find the product I wanted. By my third child, I decided I’d better just make it myself. One of my first reasons for launching Babycup was size. There are health benefits too, such as encouraging sipping, helping fine motor skills and supporting oral care. My children are wonderful and excellent models! - and my husband is very supportive. Twitter is great for connecting with people and now that I’ve attended my first trade show – the Harrogate Nursery Fair in March – I have met lots of lovely people in the nursery industry. Babycup received a great response and I couldn’t have moved things on without being there. I’m getting sales enquiries from across the globe and Babycup has been shortlisted for two awards. I’m proud that Babycup marries good looks and responsible parenting and is Made in England. RRP £7.99 for a set of four cups; multi-colour or single colour. Buy online at www.babycup.co.uk Mini, open drinking cups in gorgeous, translucent colours, for weaning 6mths to 2yrs+ (also suitable for cup-feeding newborns including preemies) I’m glad I did as I’ve had brilliant feedback from customers, dentists and other healthcare experts. What our customers are saying: “We are totally converted! Will recommend you to all! :)” “They're so great, we love ours!” “I can recommend Babycup. Perfect size and Ivy drinks without spilling anything.” “Ted’s first try with a Babycup, no problems.”

Charity

H

arry Moseley created his own charity after being diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor. He was inspired to help others with brain cancer, and wanted to make money to help his close friend Robert Harley get better. Robert died four weeks into the campaign which fueled Harry’s quest to help others. He began with making bracelets to raise money for the charity which are still on sale now. The charity now hosts a number of events including a charity football match, an annual ball, fun runs and even climbing Kilimanjaro. On the 21 July the charity will be hosting a Triathlon in Sutton Park, Birmingham. You can take part on your own or as part of a team, so if you fancy it visit the HHHO

website. They’re also having a ‘Sellebrity Soccer Match’ at Birmingham City Football Club which kicks off at 3pm on the 18th May. Some of the celebrity players include Joe Calzaghe, Chipmunk, Shayne Ward, Lee from Steps and James and Oliver Phelpsthe Weasley twins from Harry Potter. Harry Moseley was an inspiration to all, young and old and since losing him, his family have continued highlight his work and raise the profile of his charity. We are ardent supporters and encourage you to not only read Harry’s story but do all you can to support this worthy cause and celebrate the memory of this selfless, inspirational boy.
