Readers’ Life • Thank you Mum’s Mail for a support group in my handbag! This magazine is amazing! I love it. The articles never grow tired. Jam packed with interesting, current topics and much needed information. Keep at it. You’re a lifesaver. Bronwyn Harrichandparsad. • I love Mum’s Mail! I find all the articles great and I can’t wait to receive my copy. I hate people who suffer from SOHF (sense of humour failure) – always negative and passing nasty comments. No matter how difficult times are, always look on the bright side of life. There is always a rainbow at the end of the tunnel. Keep up the amazing work. Heather Neave. • Being a busy mum, I hardly get time to read the mag, yet I save a copy for me every month. Today when I received the mag I was helping my son with his homework, so I paged through it and WOW, different feel, different stories, and different ads. Love the recipe – a brilliant idea. Thanks for taking my ’lil “helper” to new heights. Cheers to new beginnings! Twinkle Naiker.

Travelling Overseas with Young Kids: Part 2 Gone are the days of leaving the kids at home with Granny and going off on your holiday for a quick break to rejuvenate. Now, families are not only catered for but welcomed in most parts of the world. Here are some more tips for travelling overseas with your young’uns. Timing Choose a time zone and stick to it. Longer stays allow you to start integrating the kids into the new time zone a week or two before you depart, however with shorter stays, stick to your time zone. It will save you a lot of difficulty in the long term. Many countries tend to stay out quite late with their entire families. This allows for you to get out when you land in your chosen destination, doing something exciting to get into the spirit of the vacation and maintain your normal sleeping patterns. There will still be jetlag but it will help immensely.

Practicality Always take out travel insurance for your family. It may seem slightly excessive but activate it all – medical-aid travel insurance, credit card insurance and then get extra from your travel agent. It is extremely important and potentially life-saving. Vaccinations are also very important. Pack a first aid kit – just the basics will save you time and money. A baby carrier – as you will be walking. Strollers can be cumbersome but a good baby carrier can bring you an incredible amount of joy and keeps the kids happier for longer. Finally, keep yourselves happy. We travel to experience and to enjoy the experience for whatever it may be. Happy travels from the Webtours Team. Contact Webtours on info@webtours.co.za. Ways to Build a Healthy Emergency Fund

BEHIND MANY A GREAT BUSINESS!

Life is always throwing curve balls and from time to time individuals will have to deal with unexpected additional bills. That is why it is important for consumers to save extra money for an emergency fund as they are then enabled to confidently take on the financial challenges life throws their way. According to Wikus Olivier, debt management expert at DebtSafe, the lack of an emergency fund can create a financial disaster, whereas having one can give you a financial advantage. It is therefore important to draw a line between savings for emergencies and savings for everything else. Olivier says there are quite a few ways to start saving for those unforeseen emergency expenses:

That’s where you will find our IT solutions • IT sales, repairs & upgrades • Server solutions • Internet • Web hosting & design • Networking • Backup & maintenance Tel: 031 701 3167 sales@damit.co.za |www.damit.co.za

• Have a proper budget in place and keep record of your expenses. • Set an emergency savings target or goal for yourself each month, starting small and building it up from there. • Trim on your monthly spending by eating at home and avoiding small daily purchases like the cup of coffee you buy at the garage each morning. • If you are in a good financial position, put your tax refund (SARS) away for emergencies or if you can’t save, use your refund to immediately close a gap somewhere. • Do some spring cleaning around the house and sell unused items to add more money to your fund. • Review memberships (like your gym costs) and contracts annually. There are various and possible cheaper ‘products’ and supplier options available. • Make sure to review as well as reshuffle your credit facilities, with the help of your financial planner. You’ll be amazed how much you can save.

Rave Restaurant Reviews

Each month we will be reviewing a few local restaurants. Here are this month’s top picks.

Endless Horizons Boutique Hotel

The Oyster Box Curry Feast

Endless Horizons Boutique Hotel in Durban North is often described as one of Durban’s best kept secrets. This hidden gem boasts 12 beautifully decorated bedrooms and a large wooden deck and infinity swimming pool offering a fresh and natural al fresco dining area. The conference room and restaurant are well-known for the delectable food and beverages. The hotel only makes use of the freshest, local ingredients and produce to ensure a meal of superb quality and taste. The menu caters for every taste and desire and will be acknowledged by even the most discerning of palates.

The curry buffet in the Ocean Terrace Restaurant continues to attract fans from far and wide. Set in the casual, Mediterraneaninspired Ocean Terrace, with gorgeous views across the Indian Ocean, the impressive curry selection, of at least 11 curries daily, includes meat, fish and vegetarian options. Using delicate blends of spices and fresh herbs, each curry is a masterpiece in itself.

I recently had lunch at Endless Horizons with my editor, Victoria, and another colleague, Melinda. After the chef told us they had fresh Kingklip that had JUST come in, I chose the fresh Linefish Goujons with fries. It was battered in sesame seeds which added an amazing flavour, and served with tartar sauce and sweet chilli mayo. It was tasty and fresh and left me wanting more! Victoria had the Thai Style Chicken Stir Fry, tossed with sesame seeds and served with basmati rice – which I of course tasted – and it was delicious! The chicken was tender and juicy and the veg was fresh and crunchy with a yummy sweet chilli sauce. Melinda wanted something lighter and went for a gourmet sandwich with black forest ham, brie and cranberry – a delicious light lunch. For dessert we had their sinful chocolate brownies, which didn’t disappoint! The light lunch menu includes gourmet sandwiches, tortilla wraps, salads and more. They also have an a la carte dinner menu which I can’t wait to try, along with some cocktails! Contact: 031 – 564 0360, info@endlesshorizons.co.za, www.endlesshorizons.co.za.

Accompanied by fresh, home-made condiments including lime and vegetable pickle, home-made chutneys, raitas, sambals and freshly baked naan breads, poppadums and roti, the Curry Buffet compels diners to return time and again. Two Tandoori ovens guarantee authentic, freshly prepared Tandoori chicken, also available on the buffet. Curry nights have been a firm Arthur family favourite for years, so we were very excited to sample The Oyster Box Curry Buffet and we weren’t disappointed. For your set fee you have an amazing choice of wonderfully prepared dishes, spiced for flavour rather than heat. A special mention must go to the Tandoori chicken which was cooked to perfection and made the perfect starter. After this we tried as many of the curries as possible, positively encouraged by our very friendly waiter. On his suggestion I enjoyed a mix of lamb curry and sugar bean curry rolled up in a freshly made roti which was delicious. This is a great venue for a special occasion with high quality food in a relaxed atmosphere. If you want to sit out on the popular terrace you must book early and make sure you are super hungry to take full advantage of the buffet! To book visit www.oysterboxhotel.com or call 031 - 514 5000.

Safety Tips Every Child Should Know Home should be a haven and sanctuary where children can grow up enjoying their formative years. However, there are dangers and elements that children should be aware of to ensure their safety. Teaching children about home safety is imperative and could potentially be life-saving, says Grant Gavin, Broker/Owner of North Durban Real Estate Company, RE/MAX Panache. He adds that educating children about home safety principles at an early age will ensure they stay safe and carry those lessons with them for the rest of their lives. Bathtub safety: Children under the age of six years old should constantly be supervised while in the bath. To avoid burns children should be taught to test the temperature of the bath water using their hand before they fully submerge their bodies.

on it, which could result in a severe injury. Furniture such as bookcases and TV units can be secured to the wall to lower the risk of it tipping over. However, it is still important to teach children that climbing on furniture can be potentially harmful. No playing with window coverings: Cords from blinds or other window coverings can be a strangulation hazard for young children. Pet Life

Nutritional Assessment in Small Animals World Veterinary Day falls on 30 April, and Dr Martin de Scally from Hilton Veterinary Hospital has some advice for pet owners on correct nutrition for pets. Optimal health in dogs and cats is highly dependent on optimal nutrition. It is impossible to know what is correct for each patient due to variation in age, breed, illness and current nutritional status, without a nutritional assessment. A nutritional assessment should include a dietary history, a full clinical exam, a body condition score and a muscle condition score plus blood tests if needed. After a nutritional assessment is completed, the animal’s nutrition is altered accordingly to address any medical problems identified. At this point goals are set for the nutritional intervention and a reassessment is scheduled. A body condition score assesses the animal’s body fat composition. Put simply, it assesses whether an animal’s energy nutritional needs are being met, are deficient or are in excess. Muscle condition scoring may be a new concept to some veterinarians and owners. It is assessed by visualisation and palpation of the spine, shoulder, head, and pelvis. Veterinarians and pet owners accept poor muscle condition as a normal consequence of aging and often do nothing to counteract this condition. Arthritis, which has a high prevalence in older animals, should be addressed before an increase in exercise is advised. After the nutritional assessment and diagnostic work all nutritional related risks are identified.

Eczema: A Mom’s Perspective

After our article last month on eczema, reader Charmaine Steyn sent through some comments on her personal experience with eczema, which we hope readers will find useful! “I read your article ‘Understanding Eczema in Children’ and although quite informative, I have a couple of comments I would like to share with you. I have a daughter who is now 12 years old who battles with eczema to such an extent that it becomes natal sores if not treated quickly. I give her Rooibos tea, cooled to drink, and then use the teabags in her cool bath in the evenings. Besides laundry detergent and soaps, no hot water - it just makes it worse. Coarse salt also helps soften the water and eases the burning. For after bath time, I made my own Rooibos aqueous cream using unscented plain aqueous cream with Rooibos teabags

extract. Put a little bit of boiling water on the teabags to draw out the good stuff and add that and the bag to cream. This made a significant difference to my daughter’s skin. There are great Rooibos tea body washes that are gentle enough for sensitive skin, as well as glycerine soap which is also good. These can be found at Clicks and Dis-Chem. Triggers of my daughter’s eczema include: • Hot bath, shower or Jacuzzi • Sea water and sea sand staying too long on the skin • Most laundry powders and soaps (Sunlight seems to be the most gentle) • Dairy products, except for yoghurt • Tight clothing • Nylon clothing Pat skin dry after bath time, don’t rub the skin These are just a few suggestions that other mums with kids with eczema might find very useful.”

Common causes 321 Umhlanga Rocks Drive are changes in diet, dehydration during (Discovery Preferred Provider) summer months and fear of passing stool. Depending on the circumstances, your doctor may recommend: Over-the-counter fibre supplements or stool softeners; (Pegicol, Laxette, Duphalac Dry, Glycerin supp), an OTC enema (an amazingly quick way to give instant relieve) or a hospital • Liver Pathology enema which clears the bowl completely. • Nutritional Pathology Up the water, add prune juice, limit refined • Gastrointestinal Pathology foods (fish fingers, veinnas, and chicken nuggets) and cheese, do regular exercise Suite 28, Chelmsford Medical Centre 2 St Augustine’s Hospital, 107 JB Marks Rd, Berea and ease up on toilet training. Gastritis The most common reason for abdominal pain in my practice in adults and children is gastritis – the inflammation of the stomach lining due to excess acid production. The main area of discomfort is right under the ribcage, just to the left. Excess acid production is often a result of stressful situations, leaving the stomach lining red and swollen. Pain, nausea, burping and bloating will lead to heartburn and a stomach ulcer if not treated. Do not underestimate stress in small children – usually paired with either going to school after a weekend or participating in competitive sports. Reassure your child continuously. Do a trial of Gaviscon and consult your doctor if the symptoms persist. The same medication that is prescribed to babies with reflux usually does the trick. If all else fails, a blood test for Helicobacter Pylori (stomach bacteria) can be done and treated successfully if positive.

A Solution for Hair Loss in Women Did you know that some women over 40 may experience hair loss? Hair loss is not an exclusively male problem. From the age of forty the female bodily constitution changes – which can also affect hair. Hair grows thinner, the scalp becomes more visible and the hairline recedes. Plantur 39 products are specially designed to meet the needs of hair in women over 40. The caffeine complex travels into the hair and may help prevent hair loss*. Nature’s phyto-active ingredients help to protect the scalp from the consequences of female aging. In collaboration with the dermatological institute of the University Clinic of Jena, Dr Wolff has discovered properties of caffeine, which could support to prevent this type of hair loss. To supply the hair with sufficient energy, use one caffeine-containing product every day and leave the shampoo on the scalp for two minutes. The Phyto-Caffeine Tonic and PhytoCaffeine Shampoo help to prevent hair loss*, while the conditioner contains a caffeine buffer. Plantur 39 is available at stores and online at Clicks, Dis-Chem and Takealot.com, as well as all major pharmacies and selected retailers. * Not resulting from a medical condition. The High Cost of Coughs Coughs are very common. Surveys suggest that at any one time, one in three children or adults are suffering from a cough, and coughs are among the most common complaints for which people seek medical advice. However, most people with a cough don’t seek medical help or advice for their symptoms at all.

Dr JorDan Sagathavan Pr. No. 0131164

B.Ch.D, PPD(Ortho)(UWC)

Patients with chronic cough may cough hundreds or even thousands of times a day and a chronic cough can persist for months or years. Even if they don’t seek help from their doctor, people with coughs do seek relief elsewhere. Last year, South Africans spent around half a billion rand on cough syrup medicines alone.

It is clear that the costs of coughs for South Africans in financial terms are huge. In addition to the money spent on medicines which don’t necessarily work, one should also consider consultations with healthcare practitioners, loss of productivity at work and days of work and school missed. Can these costs be curtailed? Consumers need to be educated in order to make informed decisions when seeking relief from coughs. When mucus is a problem, adhering to proven and effective treatments such as mucolytics, which address the underlying cause and thin the mucus effectively, may ensure money is better spent. Taking half a teaspoon of honey before sleep can provide soothing relief from coughs related to upper airway infection and lead to better quality sleep. Honey is also less expensive and a natural option. Sucking lozenges or sipping water may temporarily supress a cough, and the soothing anti-inflammatory effects of lozenges, syrups or even honey may at least temporarily relieve the sensations of throat irritation. Stop Lice

Over the years lice have become less and less affected by current treatments. How do we now treat lice to overcome lice resistance or this new ‘super bug’ as they are calling it?

2. Lice Prevention Spray: This product contains IR3535 – a bio-pesticide derived from natural origins. This ingredient has been thoroughly tested over 30 years and creates a shield over the child’s hair preventing re-infestation. It can be sprayed HFY Lice products have come up with a on before school and left on to protect hair three step approach: and repel lice. 1. Lice Shampoo containing alcohol, dimethicone and oils. The adult lice need to breathe, so they are very susceptible to ingredients that suffocate such as dimethicone or natural oils like tea tree and olive oil. However the nits, which are the lice larvae, do not need to feed or breathe. They have a gluey exoskeleton, which causes them to adhere to the base of the hair shaft. For these the best way to treat them is using an ingredient that dries them out and causes them to die. None of the ingredients are harmful or toxic and the shampoo is pleasant smelling and contains conditioners to aid the combing through process.

3 Anti-Lice Toy and Clothing Spray: This also contains IR3535 and can be liberally sprayed over the bedding, toys and hair accessories. This product is also very effective in repelling mosquitoes and flies without harming the environment. The HFY Lice Pack includes a free lice comb and is reasonably priced. Stockists: Selected Checkers stores and independent pharmacies. For more information e-mail info@chpsa.com or call 0861 307 327.

Dr Kathryn Carr While many people now recognise that MBChB (UCT) DCH (SA)

overexposure to the sun is unhealthy, the fact remains that most still do not protect their skin from its harmful rays. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in South Africa.

General PraCtitioner

What causes skin cancer? Chronic sun exposure and sunburn are major contributing factors – they damage the DNA in normal skin cells leading to abnormal growth.

031 573 1185

Who is at risk? Anyone can develop skin cancer but your risk is higher if you have any of the following: • History of excessive sun exposure or using tanning beds • You have had sunburns • Fair skin, blonde or red hair and blue, green, or grey eyes • Tendency to burn or freckle rather than tan • Family or personal history of melanoma or other skin cancers • Large number of moles (>50) When should I worry? Use the ABCDE of melanoma to help you to identify any suspicious moles which need immediate attention. Asymmetry – if you cut the mole in half the sides do not match Border – jagged or blurry Colour – uneven or different shades Diameter – size larger than a pencil eraser Evolving mole – if you notice ANY change seek advice Prevention Skin cancer risk can be reduced by being sun smart from an early age. Kids are often neglected and sadly about 80% of sun damage occurs before age 18. • Avoid unprotected UV exposure, tanning beds and seek shade between 10am and 4pm. • Wear protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses. • Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen daily. • Routinely check your skin and report changes in moles. • Educate yourself and others.

The Importance of Physical Activity World Health Day is on 7 April, and Morningside Fitness Club has some advice for you on physical health and fitness. The human body was designed to move. Regular physical activity has the ability to reduce the risk of several major chronic diseases, as well as promote quality of life and a sense of wellbeing. Some of the many benefits of physical activity include:

Hearing Health Professionals: JA Cardona & CJ McKay

SERVICES OFFERED: • Diagnostic Hearing Assessments/Tests • Free Hearing Aid Trials • Hearing Aid Fittings • Speech Therapy • FM-Systems Unit 3, Burnside, 1 Builders Way, Hillcrest, Tel: 031 - 765 5567, Fax: 031 - 765 5086, E-mail: juliecardona@telkomsa.net www.juliecardona.co.za

• Improved weight control (in conjunction with a balanced diet) • Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease • Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes • Improved self-esteem and confidence • Lowering of high blood pressure • Reduced risk of some cancers • Strengthened bones and muscles • Improved mental health, mood and resilience • Improve ability to do daily activities and prevent falls, if you’re an older adult • Improved longevity How do you get started? To maintain health and reduce risk of health problems, there are four main guidelines on the minimum amount of physical activity needed to enhance your health. Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience. Any form of movement is an opportunity to improve your health. Be active every day in as many ways as you can. Make a habit of walking or cycling when safe. Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days. If you can, also enjoy some regular, vigorous exercise for extra health and fitness. Vigorous exercise makes you ‘huff and puff’ such as jogging, aerobics and high intensity interval training. Morningside Fitness Club offers a range of physical activities for individuals to help them get started on improving their physical health, including group fitness classes and regular fitness and weight loss programs. Homeopathy Awareness Week World Homeopathy Awareness Week is from 10 to 16 April. Homeopathy is an integrated system of medicine based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances. Many would probably be surprised to know that it was devised by a medical doctor. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathy, was born in Meissen, Saxony, and after qualifying with honours, took a village doctor’s position in the coppermining area of Mansfeld, Saxony in 1781. He later began to test substances for the effect they produced on healthy individuals and tried to deduce from this the ills they would heal. Initially, he found that ingesting substances to produce noticeable changes in the body resulted in toxic effects, and set about solving this problem by exploring dilutions of the compounds he was testing, and homeopathy was born.

Life Hacks to Eat Better

Dr Mashooda Gafoor BDS (Wits) PR. No. 029 8778

Though making time for food and preparing meals may sound like a chore, it can be one of the most important keys to the success of your health goals. For everyone racing through life at warp speed, these tips can help you to make the most of your time in the kitchen. Keep it simple. Instead of following some fad diet with lots of rules, keep your healthy eating routine simple. Eat real food that’s mostly plants with lots of colour and variety.

Don’t bring junk into the house. If you’re easily swayed to nosh on chips, cookies and ice cream, keep the processed snacks out of the house. This simple trick makes healthy eating easy. Out of sight, out of mind. Eat more fat. Yes, you read that right. People who snack on healthy fats like a handful of almonds eat fewer calories over the course of the day because they feel more satisfied. So don’t skimp on fat; it keeps you fuller for longer so you will, in turn, eat less. Make lunch the night before. Stop telling yourself you’ll have time to pack a lunch on your way out the door in the morning. While you’re cleaning up from dinner, put together your lunch for the next day. Whether it is leftovers from dinner or a mason jar salad, planning ahead makes it easy to walk out the door with a healthy lunch. Carry a water bottle. Because hydration is a vital part of being healthy, make it a priority to carry a water bottle around with you and refill it throughout the day. Sleep Renewal: Sleep Studies Sleep Apnea is a common disorder affecting a number of people and occurs when a person experiences pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while asleep. Sleep Apnea disrupts sleep patterns and this can result in daytime exhaustion and sleepiness and interrupt the body’s restoration, healing and resting cycles. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common form of Sleep Apnea. This is when the airway becomes blocked or collapses, causing shallow breathing or breathing pauses. If OSA is left untreated, it can cause increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, strokes, irregular heartbeat, heart attacks or even heart failure. Sleep Renewal has introduced a new, more flexible and affordable solution for those wanting to test for the condition. The FDA approved sleep study allows patients to test for the disorder at home. The patient sleeps with a special device which records essential information, such as heart rate, airflow, respiratory effort, the amount of oxygen in the blood and the different sleep phases. This information is stored and the data is extracted and assessed by the Health Renewal sleep therapist. A neurophysiologist writes a report to provide an accurate diagnosis in the event of OSA. Both Obstructive Sleep Apnea as well as Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) can be detected using the home device. Should results for either OSA or UARS come back positive, patients are referred to a Health Renewal doctor to discuss a treatment plan. Treatment options can include supplements, a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device or a mouthpiece. If you feel exhausted during the day, or if your partner has noticed unusual breathing patterns while you sleep, contact Sleep Renewal on 0861 SKIN SA or visit www.sleeprenewal.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Handcrafted Toys Can you remember the days when you were given a special hand-made toy that you kept with you through all stages of your life? Let’s think about giving gifts like this that evoke these memories, and that are created locally, that teach skills and support people in our community directly. “Thandazela Imvula” means “pray for rain” in Zulu. Thandazela Imvula is a farm project that started in 2016 in Cato Ridge to assist those whose income had been affected by the devastating drought gripping our land. “It started with a prayer for rain and us asking what we could do while we waited for the rain to fall. We began by being creative and learning to sew and crochet and make hand crochet animals. Crocheting was a skill I personally had never done and have learnt along with all involved,” says Robyn Armstrong of Thandazela Imvula. The proceeds of each purchase will benefit the person who made it directly. At the moment they are concentrating on bunnies for Easter, but they do make many other African animals.

Easter Baskets This very cute Easter craft comes from www.redtedart.com, a blog that I just love! We tried it at home and it was great fun and turned out really well! Materials: • Papier mâché paste • Tissue paper • Balloon • Brush • Felt pieces/craft foam/ coloured paper • Feathers • Wide ribbon Method: To make papier mâché paste: mix one part flour to two parts water and microwave at full heat. Keep stirring every minute until you have a thick paste. Let it cool. Blow up balloon. Draw a line where you want the papier mâché to end – make a slight bump at the front for the chicken’s face (you can also make bunnies). Tear up your tissue paper into pieces. Using fingers or paint brush add a layer of glue onto the balloon and stick on a layer of tissue paper. Repeat in layers until you have about five layers. Making a thicker layer around the edge will give your basket structure. Let it dry

www.mumsmail.com

and then carefully pop your balloon and peel it off. Trim your baskets to neaten the edge and shape it. Embellish it to look like a chicken/bunny – you can use felt, feathers and pompoms. We used coloured paper as that is all we had! Add feathers for wings and beak, or cut them from felt/paper. Finally make some small holes and thread through some bright ribbon for a handle, and you’re all set to go on an Easter egg hunt!

Four Things to Consider When Saving For Your Children’s Education

PRE-SCHOOL AND BABY CARE

If you only start saving when your child starts Grade 1, it’s already too late! The earlier you start saving for their education the smaller the impact is on your budget. Depending on the institutions’ fees and future education inflation, a new parent needs to save at least R800 per month, preferably more, to confidently cover the total cost of a high school education at a good school. If you only start saving when your child starts Grade 1, you’ll need to put aside almost two and a half times as much every month from then on. Education inflation is real… Education costs have historically risen by between 9% and 10% each year. Therefore it is possible that the increase in school fees will be more than your salary increase each year. Your first goal should therefore be to save so that you can make up this difference without education taking a bigger bite out of your household finances.

Funding the grade gap Your second goal is to fill the gap between high school and primary school fees, as you will be paying around 20% more once your child starts high school. In fact, even primary school fees often increase with each grade, over and above the normal annual inflationary increases. As soon as your child starts Grade 1, immediately increase your savings by the difference between primary and high school fees. Protecting the future When planning for your child’s education; you should also consider an insurance policy to fund any shortfall should the worst happen to you before you’ve put enough aside. Master Quest Moments: Tuition Intuition We often find parents send their children for extra tuition at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons! Please don’t send your child for tuition a day or two before their exam or test – tutors are not magicians! There are no quick spells for learning, it takes time and continued effort! Please keep in mind that the progress and pace of lessons are totally dependent on the students. If your child is an A+ student, don’t force them to go for tuition, just to gain one or two points! If you are homeschooling your child and are concerned about a subject, by all means seek the aid of a tutor. Using a tutor once or twice a week is like sending your child for dance or music lesson, it’s an add-on, and does not take away from the home-schooling process!

gives them focus, increases their thinking and abilities, and boosts their selfconfidence. Tuition is necessary for struggling students and can greatly benefit those who are “left behind” academically! Whilst one-on-one tuition is the ideal way to go, small group sessions have their benefits too. We all need a little help now and then. Please parents, keep in mind not every student can be an A+ student or excel in every subject or sport! The marvel of humans is that we are all unique! Please feel free to send me your thoughts, questions and requests for specific articles on info@masterquest.co.za. Let the journey begin!

Tuition allows the student to gain a better understanding of their learning material,

Benefits of Extramural Dance Activities

OLD MILL PRE-PRIMARY EnrolmEnts forR 2017 opEn * Ages 18 months to Grade

Extramural dance offers your child a balanced and active afternoon at the end of a school day. The exercise involved builds fitness, co-ordination and muscle development. It is also an important release of stress from the school day and a creative outlet for all children. Children often return home after their activity and are much more focused on their homework and their time management is better. Having activities in the afternoon also keeps the children out of mischief and curbs boredom.

Having an afternoon activity gives them a focus and discipline that can even lead them into a career path in that activity/ field. It allows children of all ages to acquire a set of goals and, through hard work, aim to achieve those goals. Dance can be an amazing choice as an extramural activity! It is so varied and there are so many styles to choose from – ballet, contemporary, cheerleading, ballroom, hip hop, modern, Indian dance, tap, and acrobatics. These disciplines of dance can lead children into training for shows, festivals and exams. Dancers manage amazingly well with their extramural commitments and often manage to keep up with their academics, dance classes and sporting activities. These dancers live a well-balanced life and make many lasting friendships from their extramural activities.

A Personalised System of Education Accelerated Education Enterprises is an organisation that is absolutely committed to the upliftment of Africa through effective education. Their long-term vision is to see an educated Africa where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. They believe that education unlocks individual potential, community potential and ultimately the potential of countries and nations. Accelerated Education Enterprises develops and distributes curriculum for a highly successful personalised system of education (PSI). The PSI system allows a learner to work in an individualised, self-paced manner that embraces discovery learning and mastery. Individuals are allowed the time they need to achieve mastery and may not progress until it is achieved. In addition, there is emphasis on developing key life skills as well as honourable character and values. This results in motivated learners who take responsibility for their own

progress. Unfortunately the current model of public education limits the time allocated to a learner, and mastery is not intrinsic to the model. As a result, learners “pass” exams and move onto new, more challenging content when they may in fact have large gaps in real understanding and certainly in mastery! As the PSI system deviates from the current modus operandi in public education, it is often not well understood. Not only is it based on rigorous academic research (Keller, 1968), but the system has a proven track record world-wide and has been available in South Africa for over thirty years. In fact, Accelerated Education Enterprises believes that the PSI system of education presents a compelling solution to the serious education challenges currently faced in South Africa and many developing countries. The Benefits of Extramural Sports Children who are active in school sports are fitter, have healthier body weights and are more confident. The risk of blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis and other chronic diseases is lower among physically active people, which makes it all the more important for children to appreciate the importance of physical activity at a young age.

participate in school sports, you develop a variety of techniques and skills. You engage in friendly competition with your schoolmates, have an easier time maintaining a healthy body weight and have a lower risk of developing obesity. When you play well and win games, you gain a sense of accomplishment, which helps shape self-esteem. Watch for the Downside Although there are many benefits of sports participation, stay vigilant for possible negatives that could occur. The focus of sports participation should centre on learning skills, developing teamwork and having fun. If a focus turns toward unhealthy competition, the experience could become negative. Your ongoing involvement can ensure that your child keeps sports participation in perspective to keep it positive.

Sports and physical activity generally play a significant part in the school experience for many children. While there are benefits to involving a child in organised sports programmes, there could also be negative drawbacks. Supervise and monitor your child’s sporting experience to ensure that the positives outweigh the negatives. A beautiful floral centrepiece, placed in a white glass vase or white basket, will provide a festive pop of colour. For a trendier look, replace the colourful arrangement with an arrangement of white flowers mixed with eucalyptus or ivy, for an added touch of green. White ceramic bunnies placed in the green angel hair add a fun Easter element to your table décor, along with little white sprigs of gyp. Place a glass under-plate with a clean white linen napkin on each place-setting. To add a personalised touch to the décor, tie each napkin with a green ribbon bow and place a chocolate Easter egg wrapped in gold foil, along with a personalised name tag, on each napkin. Finally, place two tall clear glass cylinders or sweetie jars filled with gold-wrapped chocolate eggs in the centre of the table on either side of the centrepiece – the gold elements add a posh finishing touch to the table. Running and hopping Easter egg hunt Set up different activity posts around the garden. At each, your kids will need to complete various physical challenges before they start searching for more eggs. These could include star jumps, running up and down a path or doing a silly dance. For each challenge they complete, they win a little chocolate egg for their Easter basket.

Easter egg hunt clues This is so much fun. Hide a set of rhyming clues that take your child from one hiding place to another until they find their eggs.

Pirate treasure hunt Why not mix things up a bit with a pirate theme to grab their attention? Make a treasure map which your child has to follow to search out their chocolate eggs. And remember… X marks the spot! Colour coded Easter egg hunt Wrap little eggs and treats in different coloured tissue paper and then give each child a colour. Hide the treats all around the house, garden or park and the children must only collect the ones in their colour. Balloon popping Easter egg hunt Pop little treats inside balloons, blow then up and place them about the house or garden. Children must pop the balloons to find their treats (or to find a clue leading to the treat’s hiding place). For more Easter egg hunt ideas and tips, visit www.netmums.com. www.mumsmail.com

DIY versus Party Planner In recent years, children’s birthday parties have gone from DIY backyard get-togethers with clowns and games to a diverse billiondollar industry with elaborate affairs that parents are willing to pay big bucks for. In fact, there has been such a growth in demand for children’s birthday party services that the internet has huge amounts of information on going all out for your little one’s special day. This is where the party planning ‘consultant’ for children’s birthday parties comes in. Parents are increasingly finding relief in outsourcing the stress of planning their kids’ parties to a professional, because planning an event with kids running around on a sugar high isn’t easy. Hiring a party planner for a four-year-old’s birthday party might seem a little over the top, but the increase in child-focused businesses is indicative of the way children today influence their parents’ spending.

Parents are coping with a lot of stress, between managing work and family, and they feel it is well worth their hard earned money for the peace of mind that comes with hassle-free parties. If done right, everyone is happy. It is a huge shift compared to prior generations and quite telling about the way society operates today, with the choices parents must make in prioritising their time between work and family life.

Laidback Life

Bargain Books Book Reviews For children • A Girl Called Owl by Amy Wilson. It’s bad enough having a mum dippy enough to name you Owl, but when you’ve got a dad you’ve never met, a best friend who needs you more than ever, and a new boy at school giving you weird looks, there’s not a lot of room for much else. So, when Owl starts seeing strange frost patterns on her skin, she’s tempted to just forget all about it. A glittering story of frost and friendship, A Girl Called Owl is a stunning debut about family, responsibility and the beauty of the natural world. • One Amazing Elephant by Linda Oatman High. Twelve-year-old Lily Pruitt loves her grandparents, but she doesn’t love the circus – and the circus is their life. She’s perfectly happy to stay with her father, away from her neglectful mother and her grandfather’s beloved elephant, Queenie Grace. Then Grandpa Bill dies, and both Lily and Queenie Grace are devastated. The two are mourning the same man and form a bond born of loss. And when Queenie Grace faces danger, Lily must come up with a plan to help save her friend. • The Perfect Guest by Paula Metcalf. Walter is really a very neat and tidy dog. His house is his pride and joy and he gets quite nervous when guests come round. When his best friend Pansy asks to stay, though, Walter is so excited! She’s just a teenyweeny squirrel after all, how much trouble can she possibly be?! But when Pansy tries her very best to be helpful, things just seem to keep going wrong! Nothing is safe from accident-prone Pansy! Is she turning out to be the worst guest there ever was? For adults • The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne. Cyril Avery is not a real Avery, or at least that’s what his adoptive parents tell him. But if he isn’t a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do, if eccentric, Dublin couple, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence, he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from. • The Park by Gail Schimmel. Rebecca doesn’t expect to make new friends at this stage of her life. But when she becomes mother to little Amy, she finds herself spending her afternoons in the park. There she meets other mothers: first flamboyant, fun Rose, and then single-mom Lilith, whose inner strength is tangible, and whose eyes never leave her toddler. Very soon the women have formed a trio and their daughters begin to behave like sisters. But Rebecca is about to learn that friendship is not always what it seems, and that sometimes you trust the wrong people.
