We are quite excited about all the recent technological leaps we have taken at Mum’s Mail. Take Facebook for example. While most people jumped onto the Facebook bandwagon way back in 2004, Mum’s Mail resisted the urge. “What do we need a Facebook page for?” was my dismissive reply. And although most people started “tweeting” way back in 2006, Mum’s Mail only officially started “chirping” a year ago, around the same time we created our “page” on Facebook. I am ashamed to admit though that I still don’t know my passwords and have to refer back to my little black book each time I get the urge to expose my inner thoughts to the world. Does anyone else hate “tweeting” as much as I do, as a girl cannot possibly say what she needs to say in only 140 characters!? Ludicrous!

KAMEL POTTERIES (031) 579 1011

Late last year we did a total upgrade of our website, making it far more userfriendly, while incorporating a search function and a blog, which was followed by an electronic e-mail newsletter every Friday morning (we are still trying different layouts for the newsletter, so please bear with us). The next logical step was a online version of the printed magazine, in the same format. So you can now access our magazine and read it online page by page, and even “virtually turn” the pages – visit www. mumsmail.com to read the “virtual” mag.

For tuition and all your mosaic, glass and pottery supplies 34 Ashfield Avenue, Springfield Park

We cannot possibly supply enough printed magazines to keep the whole of KZN happy (65 000 monthly copies can only go so far), so if you do not currently get a copy of Mum’s Mail from your local library, school or retail outlet, this is the easiest way for you to still get your “free” copy. If you would prefer a printed version, there is still the option to subscribe for R100 per year.

The Movie: In the new movie, the evil wizard, Gargamel, chases the Smurfs out of their village, causing them to tumble through a portal into the human world, one that only opens once “in a blue moon”. The Smurfs find themselves stuck in the middle of Manhattan and must conjure up a real blue moon in order to make it home before Gargamel tracks them down. Smurfs Road Show: From 1 to 9 October, between 10am and 4pm, the Fountain Court at The Pavilion will be all blue! BOOKWORM September Book & DVD Reviews For Adults: BOOKS: • Finding Sarah is a very personal account of a South African woman’s struggle with Bulimia and Anorexia. Told in narrative style by author, Joanne Jowell, Finding Sarah poses no theories, answers to or reasons for the subject’s illness. It simply tells her story. And in so doing reveals to the reader the horror of this addictive condition and how difficult it is to overcome. Published by Pan MacMillan. Cost: R205. • Your Sensory Baby, by Megan Faure, is a real treasure of a book and one that new mums (or pregnant mums) will find indispensible reading. Megan explains how babies are affected by the five senses (touch, smell, sight, sound and taste). She describes four baby personalities based on how they cope with these senses. They are: the social butterfly, slow-to-warm-up baby, settled baby and sensitive baby. She then goes on to point out how these babies cope with the sensory world at different stages and what parents should do to optimise that interaction. She also explains how to gently form a sleep routine. Published by Penguin. Cost: R220. DVDs: • Inside Job. A fascinating documentary that explains the reasons for the 2008 global financial crisis. The interviews in the film reveal a gradual deregulation of the financial industry, the formation of complex derivatives and a questionable rating system for financial institutions – all of which contributed to the collapse. Sickeningly, viewers are shown how many of the top guys originally involved in the financial system have escaped unscathed and have even been re-elected to positions of power. Very thought-provoking. • Easy A, starring Emma Stone, is a fairly unusual tale of how a high school student develops a bad reputation based only on rumour. The film makes a comment on sexuality, judgmental Christianity and the power of rumour. Rated 13LS. Both DVDs released by NuMetro.

For Children: • Mister King’s Incredible Journey by David du Plessis is the story of the adventures of King Penguin, Mister King. Poor Mister King is captured by humans, escapes into an unknown part of the sea and then is helped by kind humans. He eventually finds his way back home. The story is simply told with bright, clear pictures and text that can be read by young readers. The book is educational in nature. Published by Random House Struik. Cost: R80. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each book & DVD to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter. Visit us at www.mumsmail.com

BUSINESS TALK Provisional Tax Explained Provisional tax is a system that allows a taxpayer to provide for their final tax debt in advance. A provisional taxpayer is required to make two advance payments during that tax year. A third payment is determined upon assessment. Provisional tax is intended to assist taxpayers to meet their tax liabilities on an ongoing basis as opposed to paying a large amount once a year on assessment. Please take note of the following dates if your year end is February 2011: First payment was due by 31 August 2011, second payment is due by 28 February 2012, third payment is due by 30 September 2012. A taxpayer is obliged to register for provisional tax if he/she/enterprise is: • Any individual who earns business income or farming income • Any director of a private company if that director is a resident • Any member of a close corporation if that member is a resident • Any company • Any person who is notified by the Commissioner that he/she is a provisional taxpayer • Any individual who derives taxable interest dividends and rental income. An individual who is 65 years and older will be exempt from paying provisional tax if his/her taxable income does not exceed a specified amount. An individual under 65 years who only receives a salary and interest from a South African bank will only qualify as a provisional taxpayer for the 2011 year of assessment if the total interest received exceeds R20 000 for the year. Please bear in mind that this is a simple guide. For more information please call the numbers below. Pinetown Professional Accountants’ aim is to ensure clients are educated on compliance issues. BUSINESS TALK Mum’s Mail Makeover I don’t believe in coincidence, so when I attended my monthly KZN Women in Business meeting in July, Isabelle de Grandpre (The Neat Freak) was sitting at my table, which I took to be a sign from the gods! Fate was intervening and destiny dictated that Isabelle would wave her magic wand and overhaul our offices which I had been puzzling about for a while. I quickly secured Isabelle for a consultation directly after the meeting, and she spent 90 minutes walking around the office, chatting about areas she felt worked well or not at all.

KWAZULU-NATAL SO CIETY FOR THE BLIND

The next day Isabelle arrived for “the overhaul”. Admittedly, there were some reluctant staff who were VERY anxious about letting go of “vital” bits of “stuff” they MAY need at SOME stage in the near future, but Isabelle was ruthless and would not let them get away with much. It also helped that one of my reps with a particular penchant for “storing” was away from the office on sick leave, making it possible for me to “tidy” her workspace without interruption.

Your participation in this event will greatly help us in achieving our goals.

Isabelle advised us not to buy any additional furniture - in fact we had way too much, which just resulted in cluttered workspaces, and more hidey holes to camouflage rubbish in. We decided right away to group staff together by function i.e. invoicing with debtors, and design with advert sales, and this simple change freed up an entire reception area. Isabelle recommended that we buy wall mountable plastic “pockets” which has resulted in much more available desk space. Isabelle spent the entire day with us, transforming our offices into professional and functional workspaces, and I am confident we would never have done it without her physically getting stuck in and helping us.

WHAT’S COOKING? Memorable Moments at Maxi’s Love, commitment, nurturing, values and loyalty are a few characteristics that come to mind when trying to define a family. Since their inception 18 years ago, the family-orientated restaurant franchise, Maxi’s, has similarly encouraged their extended family of 75 restaurants to foster development and relationships, much like any parent would do. Such guidance has kept the brand ahead of its competitors, whilst staying true to an ethos of serving a wide range of tasty and wholesome meals. While being devoted to catering for all appetites by serving mouth-watering meals in generous proportions, Maxi’s commitment to providing a fun-filled and memorable experience for their younger VIP guests is a crucial element towards the brand’s development. Christo Calitz, CEO of Taste Holdings Food Division, says that Maxi’s has always kept their young VIPs in mind: “In April 2010 the Maxi’s children’s menu, complemented by vibrant colours, was re-designed into the shape of a game console which appealed to children who could point out their favourite foods in a fun and interactive way.” The recent launch of the new Maxi’s children’s party packs will have children feeling like they are on an African safari. Filled with all sorts of fun activities, toys, balloons, invitations for their friends, and of course a choice of seven scrumptious meals to satisfy their rumbling appetites, these packs are sure to get any party going. For R40 per person, the above and more is included to maximise any child’s extraordinary birthday. 21 Maxi’s restaurants currently have play areas on site, with more to be developed in the near future. Being South Africa’s number 1 Amasi and more than four times bigger than its nearest competitor, Inkomazi identified a need to offer consumers variety and choice while still maintaining its much loved, original formulation. This month will mark a fantastic breakthrough when this innovation, Inkomazi Smooth, a category first will be available. It is the first time Inkomazi lovers have a choice of their favourite amasi in two varieties – original and smooth. The best news is that Inkomazi Smooth still has the same great rich and creamy taste that we’ve known and trusted for all these years. Having this choice will certainly widen the use of Inkomazi among those who are constantly looking for something new, healthy and enjoyable to give to their families as part of any meal. HOME, GARDEN & LIFESTYLE !

Arbor Day Arbor Day originated in 1872 in the United States territory of Nebraska. Mr J. Sterling Morton, a newcomer to the treeless plains of Nebraska, was a keen proponent of the beauty and benefit of trees. He persuaded the local agricultural board to set aside a day for planting trees and through his position as Editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper, encouraged participation in the event by publishing articles on the value of trees for soil protection, fruit, shade and building. Within two decades Arbor Day was celebrated in every U.S. State and territory, and eventually spread around the world. In South Africa, Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1983. The event captured the imagination of people who recognised the need for raising awareness of the value of trees in our society. As sources of building material, food, medicine, and simple scenic beauty, trees play a vital role in the health and wellbeing of our communities. This aspect is being given further focus this year as we celebrate “The International Year of the Forest.” In South Africa we now celebrate trees for a whole week. From 1 to 7 September every year, schools, businesses and organisations are encouraged to participate in community “greening” events to improve the health and beauty of the local environment and to propose a green future for the country. To quote Sterling Morton: “Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future.” If you want to plant trees yourself, then consider planting the two indigenous trees of the year: the Jacket Plum (Doppruim) and the Bride’s Bush (Pavetta). If you would like these trees planted on your behalf then visit Food and Trees for Africa website www.trees.co.za.

Multi Blinds & Curtains

Rebirth, Reawakening Return, Resurgence Renewal, Revival, Revitalisation, Rejuvenation, Transformation, Spring!

• Interior Blinds • Exterior Blinds • Accessories • Exclusive Curtains • Wooden Rods • Laminated Flooring

We have a chance, all over again, to start afresh - to re-energise ourselves, our lives, our homes and our gardens; and all this fantastic energy is because it is SPRING TIME. Yes! The birds are rising earlier, the dawn is now just after 6am and the sun is a little warmer. • Pot pansies: Now that Spring is here the primulas and pansies are flowering with sheer joy and the first of the daisies are opening their gorgeous faces for us. The osteospermums are bursting with health and their brilliant colours are quite bewitching. Think hanging baskets – petunias are great for hanging baskets as are the new diascias and the verbenas. Potted pansies are irresistible. Pot one pansy in a small pot and place at each place setting for a Spring day luncheon. You might like to wrap the pansy in bright tissue paper and tie with a ribbon. • Compost, mulch and fertilise: The trick with Spring gardening is to COMPOST, MULCH and FERTILISE. Spread weed-free (NB!) compost thickly on the beds, mulch with anything – leaves, grass cuttings, shredded newspaper or hay. Water the mulch so that it settles and then fertilise with Neutrog’s slowrelease, organic Bounce Back. The mulch encourages all the noonoos that are vital for soil health and the fertiliser will feed all the hungry plants. I cannot over-emphasise the necessity for fertilising – we all know how ratty we get when we are hungry!

We offer a wide range of quality blinds for home and office at prices you’ll love!

If you have ever experienced the ringing sound in your ears, known as Tinnitus, you’ll know that there is nothing pleasant about the condition. Tinnitus is the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound and may be perceived in one or both ears. Nicola Gilmour, an audiologist at Oticon South Africa explains: “Tinnitus is not a disease, but a symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes. While Tinnitus is generally not a serious condition, it usually occurs when a person has a hearing loss and in some instances, can be so distracting and annoying that it interferes with daily life. It’s a subjective phenomenon but sufferers describe the sounds as anything from ringing, buzzing, whistling, roaring, humming and hissing to whooshing. “Tinnitus is common and anyone can get it, although it is more common in the elderly and people who have been exposed to very loud noises. It may be intermittent or it can be continuous, in which case it can be a great cause of distress. For anyone suffering from it, it can literally drive you around the bend and there is every reason to take preventative care and look after your hearing,” says Nicola. What should I do if I have Tinnitus? “It is a good idea to see an ENT or your GP to assess what may be causing your Tinnitus. You should also visit your audiologist who can test your hearing to establish whether or not you present with a hearing loss that might explain the Tinnitus. In some cases, fitting a hearing aid can help reduce the Tinnitus.” Source: Oticon, 011 – 675 6104.

HEALTH & WELLBEING DELITE FOODS

Been There, Done That...

SUGAR-FREE, LOW-FAT FOODS

There’s a new European fat removal technique that is causing quite a stir in Umhlanga - non-invasive liposuction. This up-and-coming weight-loss technique produces instantaneous results and additional fat loss up to a week following treatment. Incredible! The concept works with radio frequency, ultrasound, cold laser and a vacuum suction. The treatment helps soften/ melt adipose tissue. The dissolved fat cells are then absorbed into the lymphatic system. From there it is reabsorbed into the eliminatory system and flushed out of the body.

Try our delicious TANTALIZE range of sugar-free, low-fat foods. Purchase direct via www.delitefoods.co.za, or through all major stores. Kloof Fern Agencies : 031 - 764 1952 Tricoastal Sales : 031 - 572 4402 Contact us directly at 021 - 702 0721/2 e-mail: info@delitefoods.co.za

The process is completely painless, with hardly any down time. Side effects after a treatment may include: headaches, fatigue and thirst. Areas that show vast improvements are: abdomen, “love handles”, thighs, upper back, buttocks, inner knees, upper arms, double chin and man “boobs”. Therapist’s Procedure: Consultation, measurement of the chosen area, marking the measurements, then working the area for 40 minutes. The treatment is relaxing and you can almost fall asleep during the session! You can lose anything up to 8cm immediately which is evident from the markings taken at your first consultation. After measuring, you are put on a whole body shaker for 10 minutes (equivalent to a 2km walk). This is to increase your blood circulation and jumpstart your body’s metabolism. I went for 10 consecutive sessions and lost 12cm around my stomach. I wasn’t exercising but I did try to improve my diet. I also noticed that stretch marks on my tummy (from having two children) had faded dramatically. I felt like I was on one big detox the entire time, as I was very regular and drank so much water (which is great)!

HEALTH & WELLBEING Enuresis (Bedwetting) Bedwetting is a widespread and distressing condition that can have a deep impact on a child’s behaviour, emotional wellbeing and social life. It is also very stressful for the parents or carers. When does bedwetting become a problem? Children are generally expected to be dry by a developmental age of five years, and would only be considered for treatment at age seven. Day time wetting is rare but is considered to be a significant problem and investigations should be carried out to identify any physical (organic) causes.

What causes bedwetting? It can run in families. Disturbances such as sleep arousal difficulties, polyuria (excessive urination) and bladder dysfunction can also be to blame. Mostly, bedwetting is caused by the delayed maturation of urethral sphincter control, and by holding urine until the very last minute.

David Oelofse 084 557 6285 Over 2 million people have successfully changed their bodies & their lives on the EAS Body-for-Life Programme WWW.BODYFORLIFE.COM

When should I seek medical help? If your child presents with any of the following: • Dysuria (pain on urination). • Haematuria (blood in urine). • Straining on urination. • Dribbling. • Small-stream in boys. • Stress incontinence (with coughing etc.). • Poor bowel control. • Abnormalities walking. • Continuous dampness.

No elaborate point systems or eliminating foods, just simple solutions to help you eat better, lose weight and keep it off for good.

Managing bedwetting: • Keep a calendar recording dry and wet nights (use a reward system). • Ensure your child urinates just before bedtime. • If your child is old enough, have them change the wet sheets. • Don’t give fluids after dinner. • Avoid punishments and blame. • Use an enuresis alarm.

Omega-3 has long been acknowledged as a key nutrient in foetal vision and brain development. Because of the critical role it plays during pregnancy, health officials continue to stress the importance of adequate Omega-3 consumption. A new study published in the Journal of Paediatrics confirmed the findings of other studies that the amount of Omega-3 fatty acid in a mum’s diet during pregnancy affects the visual function of her children. Another study investigating the importance of a mother’s pre-natal dietary fatty acid status showed that mothers with the highest Omega-3 status had children who showed a lower probability of childhood obesity.

Omega-3 is a perfect choice for assuring a dietary abundance of Omega-3 fatty acids. Tested and proven in human critical trials, its highly bioactive, eight-member Omega-3 fatty acids are easily absorbed and rapidly assimilated into cell membranes, displacing bad fats and reducing potentially damaging inflammatory factors. A multi-vitamin and mineral supplement delivers a wide array of essential micronutrients important to women’s health, including iron, magnesium, vitamin D and folic acid. The combination of these two products is perfect for any woman in her reproductive years. HEALTH & WELLBEING PRP Therapy Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) has for some time been used to treat soft tissue and other injuries. But since 2006, it has also been used for facial regeneration. It has been used to reverse common ageing signs such as wrinkles, acne marks, sagging skin, dark circles around the eyes and wrinkles on the neck, hands and other parts of the body. This therapy is now being offered in South Africa, with the Skin Centre in KZN being the first specialist aesthestic centre to offer this service.

DR ROGER POWELL D.C.(USA)

PRP works by using the patient’s own blood, thereby cutting down the risk of allergies. Whole blood is spun in a centrifuge which separates the components of the blood. The platelet-rich plasma component is then injected into the areas of ageing. This component helps to stop bleeding and repairs damaged blood vessels and cells in the body. Platelets also contain a substance called growth factors that, when activated, rejuvenate cells in the body. These growth factors are released into the affected areas and encourage the production of collagen and generation of new capillaries to rejuvenate the skin. The treatment is used on all skin types and colours, requires no incisions and can be administered during a lunch break. Improvements to the skin texture and tone are noticeable within three weeks.

As a result of neck injuries, however slight, you may well be suffering from SINUS, HEADACHES, MIGRAINES, NECK & ARM PAIN, WEIGHT GAIN, LOW RESISTANCE, ANXIETY, LOSS OF VITALITY & LIBIDO, DEPRESSION, IRRITABILITY, RHEUMATISM AND INSOMNIA as well as many other symptoms or sicknesses related to NEUROLOGIC or VASCULAR DEFICITS. The root of your problem will most likely be in your lower neck, in the area of C5/C6 and labelled SPONDYLOSIS or LOSS OF LORDOSIS.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Mom, Where Do Babies Come From? As a parent do you dread hearing these words from your young children? Do you feel awkward and unsure how to answer? Then help is at hand in the form of parent support workshops run by Anna de Sousa. Workshops are held on demand for five to ten people at a time and usually in a parent’s home. Teaching our children at home about sex gives them the tools with which to make informed decisions later in life, thereby acting as a preventative measure. It also creates an open relationship between parent and child so that if there is a problem the child feels more able to approach the parent for help. Informing our children correctly also affects other areas of their lives. It helps them resist peer pressure, have boundaries, do well academically and e m o t i o n a l l y, and helps them relate appropriately to peers and authority figures.

FASHION & BEAUTY Stop That Itch! If your skin is itchy for no obvious reason try moisturising it. The best way to prevent dry, irritated, chapped and itchy skin is to keep it fully moisturised. Moisturisers add a protective oily layer to your skin literally locking in moisture and decreasing the amount lost to dry air. Moisturise all year and not only when you notice dry, itchy, “snake-like” skin. Use a light body lotion in Summer and a richer body butter, which has higher oil content, in Winter. Body butter is a very thick cream intended to provide optimum amounts of skin hydration. It is best practice to exfoliate the skin before moisturising. Use a granular body scrub, once or twice weekly, gently massage away the build up of dry skin so that your moisturiser is easily absorbed and hydrates the new skin cells below. Moisturise directly after a warm bath or shower as your skin is still damp and absorption of the cream will be quicker and deeper. Give your skin a little extra care by keeping your products natural and organic. For example, Victorian Garden body scrub is a rich body scrub of natural salt and crushed rosehips, an excellent medium formulated to remove dead skin cells, regenerate the skin and stimulate the lymphatic system of the body. Fragranced with lavender, this scrub will leave the skin smooth and polished. Enchantrix body butter is a luxurious lavender and shea butter formula which will feed, replenish and soothe dry skin. It is also excellent for sunburnt skin in Summer. Contact: Isabelle Klusener, Beauty By Nature, isabelle.klusener@gmail.com. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 hamper to give away. What I love most about Kim is that she has her own, very definite ideas, which are always better than your own! I arrived at her studio in Overport, armed with a picture from one of the latest overseas glossies (thanks to my neighbour Lee) – this was my “homework/ preparation” as required by Lynne McMaster from DRESSBYLYNNE. However, Kim produced an outfit she had already designed with me in mind. What could be simpler?!

per couple for 90min.

So whilst I’ve not yet seen the final product, I am so looking forward to our “Very Vintage” High Tea. Please visit Kim at the Market to view her latest creations, or call her on 082 733 3978 to set up an appointment at her studio. Here are some dresses from her current range to whet your appetite. Be warned, her clothing is addictive – you can’t have just one...

FASHION & BEAUTY The Victorian Garden The Victorian Garden Organic Skin Care Company creates exquisite natural and organic skin and body care products using traditional recipes popular during the Victorian era (1837 – 1901). The company is steeped in fascinating history and began with Lady Frances Jane Glover-Anderson – an aristocratic Victorian lady whose legacy was passed down through generations. The Victorian Garden Organic Skincare products were revived when in 1991 Lady Frances’ great-granddaughter, Lindsay, an English aromatherapist and herbalist, began to handcraft original Victorian recipes, using the same old-fashioned methods and ingredients used and sold to clients in her Organic Skincare Salon in Sandton. The company has experienced dramatic growth and today is a well-known brand name in South Africa and internationally and in 2009 was awarded finalist placing in the Radio 702/Pastel Business Awards for unique products and service in South Africa. Products include delectable moisturisers, body lotions, and bath and hair care products and are made using botanical extracts from “heirloom” plants as well as modern-day popular essential oils. The Victorian Garden is committed to producing clean, healthy, eco-friendly products which are safe, stable and effective and are approved by Beauty Without Cruelty and comply with international health and safety standards. PREGNANCY & BABIES Natural Skin, Body and Baby Care Products The concept of Tranquil Body Treats came about when Leigh-Ann Burger, a qualified beauty therapist, reflexologist and aromatherapy masseuse, realised that the body scrub she had purchased for her salon was ridiculously overpriced. A client suggested that Leigh-Ann make her own. So she began by making a body salt scrub and after a couple of months ventured out and started making a skin and body care product range now called Tranquil Body Treats. Before launching, the products were tried and tested on 20 candidates of different skin types and conditions. Only the best products were selected. Tranquil Body Treats consists of a therapeutic skin, body and baby care range. Only the best natural ingredients are used and all the products are handmade. Laurel sulphate, parabens, alcohol and chemicals are NOT used. All the products are fragranced with luscious scents. While most of the products are edible, they are not palatable! The range consists of a variety of body scrubs, body mousses, bath milkshakes, bath salts, bath oils, shower gels, bath teas, facial products, essential oils, glycerine soaps as well as a pedicure and manicure range. There is also a Gentleman’s, Mom-to-be and Baby range. The men’s range includes a shaving mousse, after-shave spray, after-shave lotion, body salt scrub and gentleman’s body mousse. The Mom-to-be range includes massage oil, bath tea bags and stretch mark oil. Contact: Leigh-Ann Burger, 083 417 9510, orders@tranquilbodytreats.co.za, www.tranqilbodytreats.co.za. Certain foods to be aware of while breastfeeding:

So

• The number one cause of colic or discomfort in breastfed babies is dairy in the mother’s diet, especially milk, cheese and yoghurt. Humans are the only mammals who think they need to drink another mammal’s milk in order to make milk! The protein in cows’ milk passes straight through to baby. The calcium in processed cows’ milk is not well absorbed so rather substitute with tahini, sesame seeds and leafy greens. You can make your own “milk” by using a grinder/blender to chop oats flakes till fine, sieve, then blend with water and banana, or grind raw nuts into powder (not peanuts). • Cruciferous veggies often cause winds in young breastfed babies (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage etc.) as well as some legumes such as peas, beans and peanuts. • Chocolate (white or brown) contains a substance which causes tummy cramps in babies when eaten by mum.

The rule of thumb is to eat any healthy food in its most natural state possible, until your baby lets you know otherwise. Enjoy the bounty of foods in season. Feed yourself well and enjoy breastfeeding your baby.

One of the most puzzling things to new mothers is what they can and can’t eat while breastfeeding. Some mothers cut so much from their diet that they wonder what is left to eat. So what is a new mum to do? What to eat to make enough milk, yet not have a colicky baby? Some mothers can eat almost anything, while others need to be more careful (it was recently thought that this may be due to some mothers having leaky/inflamed gut syndrome).

PREGNANCY & BABIES Been There, Done That... One of the highlights of my job is being invited to “test drive” various spa treatments and when the invite to review The Spa at the Oyster Box arrived in my Inbox, it was a very welcome one! The Spa recently won the prestigious “Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Award: Hotel Spa”, and for those in the know, this equates to the Oscar Awards for spas. The spa offers an extensive variety of health and beauty enhancing treatments and they recently introduced the Mama Mio and Body Bootcamp range of treatments, so Tercia and I specifically opted to have these treatments which are aimed at pregnant ladies, or those who have recently given birth, as these are very specialised and are not offered by many spas. I chose the “Smoothie” and the “Lighten Up” which was a gentle, full body exfoliating massage, which can be enjoyed during or after pregnancy, followed by the most divine foot massage, designed to reduce swelling in the feet and lower legs. It was quite strange to be lying on my side for a full body massage, sans bulging tummy, but it was in keeping true to the design of the treatments. After reaching a state of total relaxation, the therapist took me to the Tranquility Lounge, a room offering “cocoon-like” private cubicles, where I lay for some time in quiet meditation. A buffet consisting of healthy muffins, crunchies, dried fruit and nuts, juice and mineral water is available throughout your stay at the spa, as well as use of the plunge pool, all at no extra charge. Tercia chose the “Bootcamp for Tummies” (a tummy tuck in one hour) and a “Mellow Mama” full body massage (which can be enjoyed during or after pregnancy). This is what she had to say about the treatments: “The experience at the spa is luxurious, there is attention to detail, and your comfort and relaxation is a priority. My therapist was very professional and attentive, creating a most wonderfully pampered treatment experience. I started with the “Bootcamp for Tummies”: an exfoliation, a fruit acid skin peel, a mask and a rather vigorous tummy massage, resulting in toned skin, and improved circulation - the products used such as “Get Waisted” burns fat deposits and tightens the tummy, the “Shrink to Fit” shrinks the fat cells leaving the skin tight and firm. The Bootcamp treatments are excellent for getting the body and skin back into a good condition after pregnancy. “Mellow Mama” is a must for during your pregnancy. The massage was very soothing and relaxing, and my therapist took great care to make sure my ‘baby bump’ was comfortable and supported. All mommies-to-be should have a full body massage to help with circulation and water retention.” If you’re looking for an upmarket and tranquil spa experience call The Oyster Box now and for the month of September, you can choose a Bootcamp for Butts OR Tummies OR Boobs (one hour each) for only R695 per treatment. So leave your baby with the hubby and hit the spa for some “me time” – time to reclaim your body! Call The Oyster Box in Umhlanga on 031 - 514 5070 to make your appointment.

KIDS’ CORNER Swim Baby Swim One of the most important gifts we can give a young child is the ability to swim. Too many children still drown in South Africa, a tragedy that is so easily prevented. Some important things to remember: Movement is the key to successful swimming right from the baby stage. Praise is important as it builds selfesteem. This praise in the parent and baby group encourages bonding with the parents even while they teach their babies basic water safety skills. - Toys - Baby linen - Baby clothing - Baby products - Kids’ bedroom décor - Laminated Bags - Fabrics

Skills include: Being submerged, and learning to turn around and catch the wall or float onto their back with the help of a teacher and parent. As these survival skills are mastered the child learns to swim safely to the wall or stairs and float alone. The child can then progress to a more advanced sequence of alternating between swimming and rotating onto their back, to breathe and rest, across the entire length of the pool, alone and fully clothed. Introduction to basic swimming skills and strokes follows, with the primary goal to increase self-esteem, strength, coordination and swimming skills. Finding a swimming instructor: Ensure you and your child are in tune with the instructor. Check whether they: deal well with you and have a good rapport with your child; are certified to teach babies and beginners; and hold a current C.P.R. and first-aid certificate. Find out whether the instructor uses aids. Generally the use of aids should be limited so the child does not rely on them.

KIDS’ CORNER Wallies Simone Reid, a mother of two, had always worked in the corporate world. When two of her friends started the company Coral Moon 10 (Pty) Ltd in Johannesburg they asked Simone to start up the KZN office, and Simone jumped at the opportunity. The work was different, and the company was one in which she could use her creativity and passion for good quality goods. Coral Moon focuses on children’s décor, the most popular being WALLIES, which is the company’s range of wall murals. These include the peel and stick (reuseable) murals, interactive wall play and chalkboards as well as a wide range of cutouts which can be used to create borders on ANY smooth surface e.g. picture frames, mirrors, tiles and even scrapbooking pages. Only a little water is needed to apply and remove and no damage is done to your walls. Products range in price from R80 to R380. KROOOM is Coral Moon’s range of recyclable and eco-friendly corrugated cardboard products that are fully foldable and completely flat when in their packaging. No tools are needed to assemble and they are waterproof coated, strong and sturdy. The product range is quite wide and includes colourful storage boxes, doll houses, chairs and tables, play sets and bookcases. KOKO is a range of insulated fashion lunch bags which come in a wide range of styles and colours and are great for office lunches or keeping your baby’s food cool. The water bottles are office appropriate and the shopping bags are reuseable and collapse into fun shapes. Products range from R100 to R350.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING Steroid Use in Adolescents Unfortunately steroid use amongst high school boys has become relatively common. The 2010 Discovery Sharksmart Pupil Wellbeing Survey indicates that 8.4% of matrics surveyed had taken steroids some time during their school careers and the average for all high school grades (6 – 12) was 4.7%, with steroid usage increasing with age. The reasons for youngsters turning to these illegal drugs are not limited to performance-enhancing purposes only. Many use steroids for social and aesthetic reasons and some use them because they suffer from the psychological condition Body Dysmorphic Disorder or the “antithesis of anorexia”, where an individual is perpetually unhappy with their body and will do anything to change its shape. Resorting to steroids, however, comes at a price. Some of the physical health risks of steroid use include cardiac problems, strokes, various cancers, testicular atrophy and high blood pressure. Common psychological effects are increased aggression and anti-social behaviour. Some physical signs to look out for: rapid weight gain; increased muscle size; unusually greasy hair or oily skin; small red or purplish acne usually on the shoulders and back; gynaecomastia (growth of “breasts”); hair loss/thinning; skin eruptions; facial bloating; extreme mood swings. What parents can do to combat steroid use: be informed and talk about steroids openly with your child; espouse the values of fair play in all you do; help build self-esteem and play down unrealistic self-image and performance expectations; be a formidable presence in your child’s life; confront them if things get out of hand; explore alternatives; seek professional help if necessary; always stay involved in their lives and love them unconditionally!

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING ADHD Awareness Month How many of us haven’t felt that flutter of helplessness and confusion when someone suggests that maybe - just maybe - we should take our child or teenager or even life partner for an assessment for ADHD? Our first reaction is probably to ignore it and hope it goes away. But did you know that, undiagnosed, ADHD enhances one’s chances of being a drug addict or ending up in prison and can be responsible for the breakdown of marriages, relationships and business partnerships? There is, however, a growing trend to view ADHD as a gift. Once given an understanding of why they are different and given tools to make it easier to live in the “real” world, ADDers can end up becoming the artists, innovators, loving partners and fulfilled individuals they should be.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING Fun, Family and Fantastic Attractions If you’re on the hunt for a day out that the whole family will enjoy, Moses Mabhida Stadium is the place to go. With loads of great attractions, from breathtaking to relaxing, and everything in-between, you’ll be spoiled for choice. For starters, you can get a dose of excitement climbing up the stadium’s arch on the Adventure Walk. If you feel like seeing the sights, but aren’t in the mood to climb, you can catch a ride to the top in the SkyCar. No matter how you get there, you’ll see 360º views of Durban, including the city centre, the harbour entrance and all the way out to Umhlanga. There are also informative Stadium Tours running throughout the day, giving you the chance to learn more about this landmark stadium. You’ll be walking in the footsteps of World Cup greats as you go behind the scenes, and even out onto the pitch itself. When you’re done with the stadium’s attractions, there are a number of great restaurants and shops to help you unwind. The lawns around the Imbizo Place and the adjacent People’s Park are perfect for riding bikes, playing games on the grass, or just relaxing with the family. The beach is also a short walk away, so if you’re up for it you can be dipping your toes in the sea in just a few minutes. The stadium is also an event venue, so if you’re looking to throw a once-in-alifetime birthday party, hire a suite or function room – simply call! Glowing With Pride: STABILO BOSS Celebrates 40th Birthday!

Lays the best foundation upon which to build further education. We are developing the whole child, providing stimulation through music, drama, art, ballet, ball skills, gymnastics, fantasy play, construction, puzzles & books and playground activities.

STABILO has been around since 1875 and it’s the STABILO BOSS fluorescent marker that has been the “highlighted” hero over the years. Now, 40 years later, there’s hardly a soul who has never used this remarkable fluorescent innovation.

Broadacres cater for children from: 3 months - 6 years, full or half day

Jenny Gaul 031 - 564 7848 or 031 - 564 0371

The idea for this innovation came about when the company’s Günter Schwanhäusser visited the USA on business. He noticed students were using a crude pen with drab yellow-brown ink to mark text passages and that ignited an idea for fluorescent pens. The world of pens and writing was becoming a lot more colourful, thanks in part to the use of plastics and new inks. STABILO decided the fluorescent-marker idea would be a winner and set about its development and in 1971 the STABILO BOSS markers were launched to a wildly enthusiastic market, starting with the still popular fluorescent yellow. STABILO BOSS was a true breakthrough, being the first tool with which to “over mark” text passages rather than underline them. This has made the pen one of the company’s most successful products, and it is still without equal 40 years on.

Environmentalists are happy to know that the cap and seal of the STABILO BOSS is 30% recycled plastic. What’s more, the fluorescent ink is non-toxic. As for colours, it’s the only highlighter that offers nine, including the original and ever popular fluorescent yellow. As for durability, each highlighter has a cap-off time of four hours before it dries up, and each is good for 375m of highlight length. Happy 40th birthday to the BOSS of highlighters!

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING Lice Est. 1972

Lice are wingless, parasitic insects that live among human hairs and feed on tiny amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. Lice lay their eggs (nits) on the hair shaft. The eggs are tiny yellow or brown dots and look like dandruff that can’t be shaken off. The eggs hatch after one or two weeks, leaving the empty shells behind. The baby lice grow to adult size (the size of a sesame seed) within a couple of weeks and feed off the scalp with tiny bites. These bites may cause itchiness and sores. Scratched sores can become infected. To check for lice or nits in your children’s hair part the hair into small sections and use a fine-tooth comb on the scalp, behind the ears, and around the nape of the neck. Report head lice to your child’s school as soon as you discover them and enquire about the school’s policy regarding treatment and return to school.

Wonderland Pre-Primary, located in the heart of the residential suburb of Morningside, was founded in 1972 by Dr Edwina Grossi, a Foundation Phase Specialist and Remedial Teacher with a PhD in Education. To cater for the need for quality baby care, Wonderland Baby Care was established in 1996. Wonderland’s mission statement incorporates the belief that every child is a precious and wonderful gift, worthy of unconditional love and deserving of the right to learn in a secure and happy environment. With such a foundation every child has the ability to succeed, growing effectively into young adulthood with a positive belief in themselves.

A busy child is a happy child and for this reason Wonderland has established well thought-out, balanced, age-appropriate daily programmes. Extra curricular activities include ballet, arts and crafts, computer club, speech and drama and Wonderskills, a programme compiled by Dr Grossi, in accordance with OBE principles, catering for holistic development.

Tips to prevent getting lice: • Spray children’s hair three times per week with vinegar in water. • When there is an outbreak don’t wash hair as frequently – lice like clean hair. • When you do wash, pop some tea tree oil in your normal shampoo beforehand. • Wear swimming caps when swimming. • Don’t use each other’s hairbrushes or hats. • Wash linen when there is an outbreak.

Fireworks in a Glass

The Spa On Fairway

Use What? • Water • Oil • Food Colouring • Tall Glass • Another Cup/ Glass • Fork

The Spa On Fairway is an exclusive beauty and wellness health spa situated in Virginia, Durban North. It offers breathtaking, panoramic sea views of the Indian Ocean. Facilities include two Jacuzzis, a sauna, steam room, hair salon, outdoor pool area and restaurant. All the treatments offered, together with the calming and relaxing atmosphere of The Spa On Fairway, will relax, strengthen and revitalise you. Spending time there will enhance your mind, body and spirit and leave you looking and feeling radiant.

Do What? • Fill the tall glass almost to the top with room-temperature water. Warm water is ok, too. • Pour a little oil into the other glass (1-2 tablespoons). • Add a couple of drops of food colouring. I used one drop of blue and one drop of red, but you can use any colours. • Briefly stir the oil and food colouring mixture with a fork. You want to break up the food colouring drops into smaller drops, but not thoroughly mix the liquid. • Pour the oil and colouring mixture into the tall glass. • Now watch! The food colouring will slowly sink in the glass, with each droplet expanding outward as it falls, resembling fireworks falling into water. So What? Food colouring dissolves in water, but not in oil. When you stir the food colouring in the oil, you are breaking up the colouring droplets (though drops that come into contact with each other will merge... blue + red = purple). Oil is less dense than water, so the oil will float at the top of the glass. As the coloured drops sink to the bottom of the oil, they mix with the water. The colour diffuses outward as the heavier coloured drop falls to the bottom.

The Spa On Fairway offers a wide range of therapeutic treatments. Massages range from Swedish, Aromatherapy, Hot Stone Massage and Rungu to their signature Five Star Massage. For facial treatments choose between the Dermalogica and Matis skin care range. Body treatments are performed with the Thalgo range. All therapists at the spa are fully qualified in their respective fields and work to a very high standard. A new addition to the list of quality treatments is permanent hair reduction, which is done using the sheer light duet laser system. The Spa On Fairway boasts the latest technology in painless hair removal, with visible results in just one treatment. It is completely safe on darker skin tones. There is currently an introductory special of 20% discount on treatments. Free consultations are also offered. Be sure to visit this haven of peace and tranquillity, indulge in their wide range of therapies and soothe your tired minds and bodies.

CHARITY CHEST How to Help • Bone Marrow Donor Awareness Month runs from 13 September to 12 October. The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SAMBR) recruits bone marrow donors to help South Africans diagnosed with leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders. Since there is a 1:100 000 chance of finding a compatible donor at least 100 000 donors are needed to make SAMBR effective. The Sunflower Fund, an NGO that raises funds for SAMBR, will hold the following fundraising events in September: the Mum’s Mail High Tea (2 September) and The Sunflower Fund Hyper 5km Walk/Run (11 September). Contact Tenley or Steph, 031 – 266 1148. • Animal Action is run by a small group of people who are dedicated to the rights of animals. The organisation is working on its first home in Etete, 12km from Ballito. To find out more contact JAB, 032 – 947 1210. • Why Leave a Bequest to Charity? Consider including in your Will a bequest to the Highway Hospice Association. That way your vision will be kept alive for years. Hospice would use your gift to provide practical help and emotional support for its patients. Contact Heather Walker, 031 – 208 6110. • The Ikusasa School of Cooking runs a programme that offers 10 disadvantaged school learners the opportunity to learn culinary skills in a one-year programme. The school is a joint project of St Martin’s Diocesan Home for Children, Chaine Des Rostisseurs Foundation Trust, The International Hotel School and others. The Centre addresses the impact of HIV/AIDS in a holistic and practical way. The mission of the organisation is to show unconditional love to those affected by the pandemic. Contact Skhumbuzo, 031 – 765 5866. • Teen Mom Support Group is a support group for teen moms in the Durban area. You can help by donating baby goods, teaching skills, providing information pamphlets and providing a venue for the support group to meet. If you would like to help, or are a teen mom in need of support, contact Michelle Roberts, 072 575 5966, info@teenmomsupportkzn.co.za. NEWS • The Connor Bell Sports Trust, an NGO formed after the death of eightyear-old Connor Bell, aims to raise R1m for the trust. In August Royal Hotel staff members and other cyclists took part in a Coast2Coast cycling challenge to help raise funds. Send your charity info to editor@mumsmail.com. MAN OF THE MONTH Man of the Month Shawn Thompson, a Durban North resident and father of three, is the CEO of uShaka Marine World. Shawn reports to three boards and has 550 people on his payroll. A typical day will see him conferring with engineers on technical issues, discussing money issues with his finance team, debating merchandising with retailers and dealing with food and beverage matters with restaurateurs. He especially enjoys working with people and encourages openness, questions, debate and different points of view among his staff. This “human-behaviour” approach seems to have paid off as, during Shawn’s two-and-a-half years with uShaka, the footfall to, and gross operating profit of the park has increased substantially. He spent many years in the banking industry and therefore has a strong financial background – important in any business. When in those positions Shawn and his family visited all the big theme parks across the world. This has helped him to view parks (and uShaka) from a layman’s perspective and implement changes in favour of the user. His managerial positions in banking similarly saw Shawn wining and dining – perfect experience for his position now (one quarter of uShaka’s revenue comes from the food and beverage outlets at the park). And, very importantly, Shawn loves the sea and everything about it. So coming to work is a pleasure! “I strive for balance in all areas of life,” said Shaun, “from work to physical, spiritual, family and self.” WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 5 family tickets to uShaka Kids’ World to give away. As the average male spends 3000 hours of his lifetime shaving, the call for more than just a razor has finally been answered.

Most pregnancy information is targeted at new mothers (and understandably so!). However, often new dads are not only neglected but don’t feel ready for the challenges of fatherhood. They’re also tired, they’re still working to provide for their families and, while they are trying to support their partner in her new role as a mother, it’s often difficult to do so. With this in mind Castrol Magnatec wanted to provide new dads with some handy tools to ensure they are ready for this new chapter and ready for every challenge!

Brand new features include: • Skin Guards - innovative skin protectors that act to smooth out skin between blade tips to reduce irritation. • Advanced Hydrating Gel Reservoir the blade cartridge uses advanced lubrication, with soothing Aloe Vera and vitamin E, in a hydrating gel reservoir that lasts up to twice as long as ordinary lubricating strips. • Flip Trimmer - flip back the hydrating gel reservoir so that all five blades touch the skin, as opposed to the single edging blade on the reverse side of some razors. • Ergonomic Handle. • Hydro Shave Gels – use new Schick Hydro 5 with Sensitive Skin and Moisturising Shave Gels.

Therefore, until the end of October, Castrol is distributing New Dad Safety Packs in leading hospitals, to ensure that dads can “keep it together” while also providing for, and ensuring the safety of, their families.
