There’s clever advertising (think Nando’s loo roll in the freezer), there’s blatantly, blasphemously wrong advertising (think Red Bull Jesus walking on water), and then there’s downright irritating adverting (think FNB Hi Steve...). I Googled “irritating FNB advert” and found 542 000 results! The greatest issue I have with these adverts, is the disrespect the little brat shows Steve when she says “What do you want?” Now in my house, if my kids DARED to speak to ANYONE on the phone like that (let alone a stranger), they would need that Nando’s frozen loo paper for their bums! What message is FNB sending? That it’s okay to be rude to people if you don’t like them? I really think they’ve missed the mark here and suggest their advertising agency take a long walk off a short plank.

Here are some of the comments I found when trawling Google: • “Is anyone else getting freaking annoyed with these stupid FNB ads every 5 minutes?? I change stations and it follows me! Make it stop!” • “FNB I will never ever even consider banking with you, even if you are the last bank on earth, or if my bank charges me three times more. I will not bank with FNB because of your stupid irritating adverts and the way you exaggerate.” • “I actually now despise FNB, thanks to this abuse of advert repeats. These repeats are a nuisance to the airwaves, it’s like a plague.” • “There is a MAJOR difference between getting the message across and irritating the HELL out of radio listeners! It was funny the first time, even the second and third time, BUT THE FREQUENCY HAS BECOME MURDER TO MY EARS!!!”

Reader’s Life Fan Mail • I got a letter in the post today and what a joy, my own personal Mum’s Mail. Thank you from Vryheid Child Welfare for always being so willing to help us all by allowing us to place free adverts for help with our various fundraisers. With budget cuts and no Lotto funding we would never be able to afford the luxury of this form. God bless and keep up the good work and you too will continue to be blessed abundantly for all the caring and love you so willingly show and provide for others. Bev Baxter • The World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) – DUT chapter would like to send a delegation of six students to the WCCS to be held in Perth, Australia, 22 – 29 August. WCCS-DUT is looking for sponsorship that would help them reach their estimated budget of R120 000 (this amount includes delegate fees and flights for six). To assist in any way please contact Justin Adams, juzzyadams@gmail. com. • I found your e-mail details via the website and thought I would try my luck to find out whether you by any chance know of any single parent support groups in Durban or safe dating sites for single parents to chat and get together. I am a single parent and it is so difficult to find other single parents out there, and dating sites can be so daunting. Shannon [Ed’s note: readers, we welcome your suggestions/comments. We plan to do another article on this subject in the near future]. • A comment on the “Save Our Skin” article in a recent newsletter: I am an avid reader of your weekly mail and just this morning, with just one article, you have changed my life. Laid Back Life For Children: • BOOKS: • I Wish I Had a Submarine. This wonderfully colourful story book is filled to the page edges with colourful, happy pictures just perfect for stirring the imagination of a young child. The character in the story takes her bright pink submarine for a ride through the ocean and meets all sorts of interesting creatures. The book costs R100 and is available at NSA Art Gallery, Blue Moon or directly from the author, Kerry Leigh Katz, 073 402 4006. • The History Keepers by Damian Dibben is an exciting adventure read suitable for boys and girls aged 10 to 12. The story’s hero is young Jake Djones whose scatty parents suddenly disappear. Jake himself is kidnapped only to discover that he was taken in order to help a strange bunch of people find his parents. And to do that they must travel back in time! Jake travels with some other adventurers back to the year 1506 in Italy. Here he falls in love, comes face to face with an evil villain, and helps to preserve history for the future. A super read for youngsters. Cost: R165. Published by Random House Struik.
For Adults: • BOOKS • CHOC Cookbook edited by Ben Visser is a beautifully laid out cookbook suitable for adults and children. The book was produced in aid of CHOC – Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa. It contains lots of recipes, accompanied by pictures, with directions at the front on how to give nutritious meals to children suffering with cancer. Also included is a list of cancer warning signs and interspersed in the book are the most heart-wrenching stories of children who have suffered with cancer. The book costs R120, with funds used to help raise awareness of childhood cancer. Cookbooks available at the Mum’s Mail office in Durban North. Contact 031 – 573 1731. • DVDs: • The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn is the mostly “visual” story of the complex relationships found within a growing family. Brad Pitt is an authoritarian father to two boys and the eldest son, played by Sean Penn in later life, suffers the most under his father’s difficult ways. Embedded in the movie is a strange depiction of creation-cum-evolution and survival of the fittest, symbolising this family’s own journey through life. Be warned: this is an odd (and very long) movie! A NuMetro release. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each book & DVD to give away & 3 copies of I Wish I Had a Submarine to give away. World Book Day World Book Day 23 April World Book Day, established by UNESCO in 1995, aims to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature because on this date and in the same year of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It was a natural choice for UNESCO to pay a worldwide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading. Books & Books in Durban North is the perfect place in which to “discover the pleasure of reading”. This independently owned, community-minded shop is very active in the book world and has a wonderful variety of books on its shelves. Staff are passionate about reading and are very helpful when you need to know a particular genre, recommendation or what’s new. They offer loyalty cards and gift vouchers and a regular newsletter of upcoming events and forthcoming titles. This busy store also does regular events such as book launches, author visits/talks and interesting workshops. Coffee mornings are held at 10am on the second Tuesday of every month. On these occasions representatives from various publishing houses tell visitors about the exciting new titles soon to be released. This is particularly useful to book clubs. Saturdays at 10am is story time for young children (aged three to eight). Creatures and characters from favourite stories come alive during this delightful hour while mums and dads relax with a cup of coffee or browse the shelves for something great to read. Upcoming events: 18 April – international best-selling author, Jeffrey Archer (Durban Country Club); Peter Rabbit guest appearance and kiddies’ stories until 7 April. The “To Do List”: • Keep the lawn well mowed to prevent yellowing. • Plant up the beds and pots with petunias for instant display. • Feed the garden with Neutrog organic fertiliser. • Water deeply rather than sprinkle. • Cook extra quantities when cooking supper and freeze the extra – there will be hungry little mouths after hectic swimming sessions! • Buy gorgeous ribbons and tissue papers, glue and glitter in time for the holidays so the children can decorate eggs. • Give an essential gift of a UV-resistant hat. Ideas for Decorating the Easter Table: • Use a piece of bunny gift wrap as a “place mat” at each setting. • Match the paper serviettes and place in a wine glass near the juice jugs or at each place setting. • Use the same colour serviettes in the bread baskets. • Place bunnies and eggs in the centre of the table. • Add pots of daffodils wrapped with tissue and raffia amongst the bunnies. • Hard boil eggs and tie with a ribbon. Tie a bow and write the initial for each guest on the eggs with either poster paint or a koki pen. Use as a name card. Place in the fruit bowl at each setting. • If you want to blow an egg, it is quite a performance! An easier way to achieve the same result is to make a hole in the round end of the egg and get a syringe from the chemist. Pierce the egg yolk and draw up the yolk into the syringe. Wash the egg shell well and decorate when dry.

Easter Life Jungle Jim Jungle Jim manufactures and installs premium quality jungle gyms and playground equipment. They have a range of the most popular gyms for the domestic market but also cater for schools, hotels, resorts and enclosed housing estates. Jungle Jim products are aimed at people who demand a quality installation with the backup of craftsmen dedicated to their profession. They are aesthetically pleasing to the eye and will suit any top market home. They are designed to give the children fun while at the same time building muscle and enhancing brain, hand, eye and foot co-ordination. All installations are carried out by the owners of the company as if they were being done for them personally. The gyms are unique in that they are made with lathe-turned poles. The main uprights are drilled to accept the horizontal poles, thereby eliminating protruding ends and thread bar that could injure a child. They are also virtually splinter free. No nails are used on domestic gyms, only cad-plated screws which enhance the life of the gyms. Should you decide to move home, the gyms can be taken down and re-erected at the new location. All timber is CCA treated to SABS specifications. Jungle Jim also constructs playground equipment to special order, as well as garden and veranda benches and tables. Jungle Jim has been in business for 15 years. Their aim has always been to make a SAFE, quality product that no-one else can match. And so far they have succeeded. The smiles on the children’s faces are a huge part of their reward. Contact: Hylton, 082 493 8703, hyltong@vodamail.co.za.

Easter Life Beautiful Gift Presentation by Wrap for You Ingrid Burton of Wrap for You in Durban North does gift wrapping, sells ribbons and gift wrap, and also presents gift wrap courses. In February I attended a gift wrapping course with Ingrid. If you, like myself, have always loved and appreciated beautifully wrapped gifts, and have always wondered how you can do this at home, then this course is for you. I spent just over four hours with Ingrid who taught me everything from pleating, to wrapping those very awkward presents like oddly shaped wine bottles, heart-shaped boxes, round biscuit tins etc. It was great to see that if you have a little bit of an imagination there is so much you can do with your gift wrapping. Ingrid explained what “tools” are necessary – double-sided tape being one of them – as well as two pairs of scissors (one for cutting paper, the other for ribbon cutting) and storage options for wrapping supplies. She recommended paper types (e.g. small patterned paper for small boxes and vice versa) and what ribbon types are best. Her course was full of “top tips”. Here is one of them: when wrapping ribbon around the length of a box simply tie the two ends together once. Don’t tie a knot because it makes it too difficult for the recipient to open. I also learnt how to tie all sorts of bows, including basic bows, florist bows, and pom-pom bows (and their variations). You can create your own unique presentation using any number of materials and techniques. You’re limited only by your imagination!
BAR ONE CHEESECAKE

Mix in glass bowl and microwave for 2 minutes, watching that it does not burn. Chocolate sauce: • 50g chocolate • 2 tablespoons cream. Warm cream in microwave and then stir in chopped chocolate. Cheesecake filling: • 3 teaspoons gelatine • 60m water Sprinkle gelatine over water and gently warm in microwave (30 seconds). Pour half of the cheese mix into a prepared biscuit tin. Drizzle half the choc sauce and half the butterscotch sauce over cheese mix. Dad’s Life Simon Says ... Nip Tuck Dad Recently my daughter has started a new thing: she puts her hands on my face and pulls the skin taut when I’m standing in front of the mirror. I stare at my reflection and see an enormous “Cheshire Cat through the Looking Glass”. According to her this strangely grimacing apparition is an improvement on my seasoned face. Her concern for my wrinkles is touching but also alarming. She has been watching all manner of plastic surgery reality shows on TV, and is adamant I need to go under the knife. To my horror, this week she presented me with her rendition of a brand new “Nip Tuck Dad”. She photoshopped a picture of me to the point that if it were used on my passport I’d be arrested for impersonating Ken. She foisted a most distressing brow lift on my face, giving me a look of bewilderment, and narrowed my nose so that I looked like Macaulay Culkin in “Party Monster”. She extended my chin to resemble Superman’s prodigious jaw line, my ears were reduced to mere porcelain teacup handles, and my mouth suffered a collagen injection so that even Angelina Jolie would pucker up to my virtual advances. But the most outrageous transformation was my hair. It looked more like some virtual explosion of immodesty. It leapt out of my scalp like a garish post-modernist fountain of youth. Seven years of Sims and a year of Photoshop and I was the target of my daughter’s idea of a perfect virtual world! After checking on my old wrinkled face in the mirror I regained my composure, heaved a sigh of relief and remembered all the misdemeanours of the baby girl I’ve grown to love so much... Dad’s Life Calling All Dads Over the years we blokes have been the brunt of many a barbed joke, usually to do with how necessary we are on this planet. Here are a couple to give you the idea: • Men are like blenders…you need one but you’re not quite sure why. • Why does it take a man the whole day to change a nappy? He’s waiting for his wife to come home. Many a true word spoken in jest or totally unjustified? A recent national time-use survey showed that men spend only a 10th of the time compared to women, performing child care tasks for children under seven. At the same time the South African Institute of Race Relations released a report containing research that shows that the active presence of a Dad contributes significantly to a child’s intellectual functioning and school achievement. On the flipside, the absence of a father can lead to emotional disturbances and even depression. The research shows that girls who grow up with present, active Dads are more likely to have higher self-esteem, lower levels of risky sexual behaviour and fewer difficulties in forming lasting romantic relationships in adulthood. Boys growing up with active Dads are less likely to display hypermasculine or aggressive behaviour. It’s fashionable to diss us blokes but we are integral in our kids’ lives. Let’s spend more active, hands-on time with them from day one. The results will last a lifetime. New Dad? Never changed a nappy or bathed a baby? Still think a Doughnut is something good to eat? The Baby House in Umhlanga (www.sayhello.co.za) welcomes new or inexperienced Dad’s wanting to learn more about the practical care of a newborn child. Business Life Local Networking Group Celebrates 1st Birthday
Décor and Catering for all Events
The Umhlanga branch of Inspiring Women Networking (IWN) celebrates its 1st birthday on 21 April. A special meeting will be held on 20 April to commemorate the day. Members will be asked to give testimonials of how they have progressed with their businesses over the year, the group will reflect on highlights of the year past and then set some goals and challenges for the year to come. These goals will be “time-capsuled” and revisited on the group’s 2nd birthday in 2013. IWN is a platform for women in business to promote their business, network, get ideas and obtain referrals. The Umhlanga Branch meets on the last Friday of every month at the Rolling Hills Country Club, Umhlanga. Roxanne Krause, the franchise owner, had this to say: “Five years ago I was introduced to business networking by my accountant, and was completely horrified at having to stand up in front of 20 people and talk! Seeing the potential that networking could offer, I worked at it, broke through my mould and over the years started attending more and more different networks. Two years ago I took the plunge and started my own business, and I owe it all to networking and the invaluable key people I have met at these networking meeting who have helped me make it possible. A year ago I decided to buy the IWN franchise as I wanted to give back.”

Business Life Investing 101 “I would like to invest some money, what do you suggest?” A broad question that Kerwin Van Niekerk, a financial advisor, is often asked. The world of investing is a diverse one with many options available, each option with structural upsides and possible downsides. The answer to the question is determined primarily by your goal for this money: • Is the goal to save towards retirement, child’s varsity fees, a deposit for a home or just to build up a cash reserve? • How long are you able to invest this money for – one year, five years or longer? • How accessible should your money be - immediately or only in the medium to long term? Other factors to consider are: • Your tolerance to risk - are you conservative by nature or are you willing to take some risk investment wise? • How much can you commit to putting away as a lump sum or on a monthly basis? Broadly speaking, the following are some of the more common investment vehicles that will be discussed with you by a qualified financial advisor: • Unit Trusts: parts of shares in a range of companies, property funds, bonds and money market instruments. Highly accessible, discipline is needed not to spend before reaching your goal. • Endowments: five-year contractual investment invested in a range of unit trusts. They offer moderate accessibility and are a disciplined form of savings. • Retirement Annuities (RAs): Far more consumer friendly than the RAs of yesteryear in terms of costs and investment choice. Low accessibility, highly disciplined and tax deductible to certain levels.

Green Life African Organics What could be better than using a product made from African plants which by nature are used to harsh growing conditions and have produced some of the most powerful protective ingredients known to man. African Organics, a company based in Richmond, has harnessed the benefits of some of these plants to make products that protect and treat – and smell fabulous too! I tried African Organics’ Natural Body Wash and Natural Body Lotion. Both come in bottles with pumps making them super easy to use. Perhaps because of the name “African” and the creamy look of the body lotion, I was reminded of “Amarula” every time I showered and found myself longing for a sundowner and a trip to the game reserve! Neither of the products contains Amarula but contain, instead, Honeybush (in the body wash) and Kigelia (in the body lotion). Honeybush (found in the Western Cape) contains antioxidants and has antiShovlin’s PINK GARDEN inflammatory properties, whilst Kigelia SERVICE Garden Extract (from the Sausage Tree), has been used for sunspots, melanomas and blemServices From Morningside to Umhlanga ishes. Green Life Green-Friendly Office Products
What a bumper hamper of products Mum’s Mail received from Roxanne Krause of Footstamp Promotions recently. It was chock full of home/office products that stand by the statements: Sustainable, Recyclable, Recycled, Reusable and Energy Saving. So what did we try out? Well, four bags for starters – one cross-shoulder large moon bag, a laminated 100% recycled PET fabric cooler bag big enough for seven cans, a super little shopping bag that folds into a tiny pouch that I keep in my handbag, and a large canvas bag that was perfect for my laptop. Then there was a natty little “trigger” torch that doesn’t need batteries (good for camping because it’s lightweight), a classy looking wooden pen holder and a pen-cum-highlighter covered in recycled paper. My school-going daughter took possession of the “greengrass” water bottle because the neck is small enough not to spill and make a mess when she takes a swig at school. The salad bowl and spoons are beautiful, smooth items made of bamboo. How’s that for unique? Although they can’t be washed in the dishwasher, they hand wash very easily on account of the silky finish. Another bamboo product is the very nifty bamboo mouse and mouse pad – yes that’s right – an eco-logical optical bamboo mouse that works perfectly. I had to fight off lots of people for that one!

“I was delighted with my win of a Skip hamper. I’ve always used Skip Auto detergent and been very satisfied with the product. I was equally satisfied with the Skip Liquid Detergent. An added bonus being it leaves no residue in the machine dispenser and... what a saving on storage space. The Comfort Concentrate proved to be more than just a softener. It leaves a lasting fragrance even after the washing is dry.” Ann Campbell.

“I really enjoy using both the products very much. At first I was concerned as there was not much foaming action happening in the washing machine. But when the clothes came out, they were soft, clean and smelled great!!! Two things I wanted to point out that impressed me: • I had a white shirt that I had previously washed using another washing powder and there was still a small chocolate stain on the front of it. I put some of the Skip liquid onto it directly, hand-washed the shirt and was happily surprised that the stain came out! • Often with hand-washing items, one is left with a slimy residue on your hands and it takes a while to rinse off. With Skip I was really glad that there was none of that at all.” Sam Thomson. Readers are encouraged to visit the website: www.skip.co.za. Health Awareness Month It‛s My Life and it‛s Now or Never “Home schooling my three beautiful children over the last four years has taken love, compassion and so much dedication. I was so consumed with being the perfect wife and mother that I found myself forgetting how to just be me.” Six years of no exercise, a divorce after 15 years of marriage and 21kg of excess weight is what made single mom, Debra Haroldt from Johannesburg, take a long hard look at herself in the mirror and accept she was not the woman she wanted to be. She was neglecting her body, soul and mind and it was time to take control of her life again. “I reluctantly joined an outdoor fitness programme called Adventure Boot Camp after promising a friend I would and thinking I would never make it past day one. After a few weeks of consistent exercise I quickly realised there was hope for me after all and began to put myself back together,” explained Debra. “It’s now been one year since I joined Adventure Boot Camp and the results are phenomenal. I weigh 21kgs less, have lost 130cm from my entire body and am finally back to where I started before having my children. Don’t let anybody tell you it’s easy because it’s not. It takes hard work and dedication waking up every morning at 4.30am to exercise and always watching what you eat. My advice to other women struggling to find out who they are or want to have some time in the day to just be, start by making consistent small changes. They can make a huge difference over time.” Source: Gwen Sparks, 083 443 0019. For info on Adventure Boot Camp visit www.AdventureBootCamp.co.za. Health Awareness Month Rollerkidz – Let‛s Go Skating! When discussing family balance, parents are often heard saying: “I want to have more fun with my children. I want to spend more quality time with my family. My family needs more exercise – more active time together. We do not have the time to all do the things that make us happy.” There is a solution – rollerskating! It is the perfect solution to every family striving for balance! Roller-skating is a bit like riding a bicycle – if you did it as a kid, you’ll be amazed how quickly you get the knack again. The hours of fun and laughter you’ll share with your kids while roller-skating will change your life. Letting your children (and partner) see the “fun” side of you will transform your relationships. And letting yourself feel as free as a child again is good for your own emotional wellbeing. As if this was not enough, roller-skating is ranked among the best aerobic exercises. According to a U.S.A. study, roller skating causes 50% less impact on your joints than running. In other words, an aerobic roller skating workout has the same benefit as the same amount of time spent jogging, without the joint damage. Roller skates have come a long way too. They are lighter, faster and more comfortable and are now more affordable. Rollerkidz offers a variety of top quality roller skates for active, adventure-seeking families that want stay fit and have fun. Contact: Reuben de Beer, Rollerkidz, 083 445 3165, admin@rollerkidz.co.za. Visit www.rollerkidz.co.za. Health Awareness Month My Baby‛s Hearing: What I Need to Know… In the first few years of life, hearing is a critical part of a child’s social, emotional and cognitive development. Even a mild or partial hearing loss can affect a child’s ability to speak and understand language. Hearing loss is a fairly common occurrence, with approximately one out of every 1000 babies born with some degree of hearing loss. Certain factors such as prematurity, low birth weight, family history of deafness and if the mother has been exposed to German measles or has diabetes, may make the baby more at risk for hearing loss. Research has shown that the earlier hearing loss is diagnosed and intervention started, the better the child’s future language development. Sadly, in reality the average age for the detection of a hearing loss is often as late as two years of age. Have you ever wondered why a baby is calmed and soothed by its mother’s voice? Babies can hear from 24 weeks of pregnancy, so by the time your baby is born, your voice is the one that is familiar and comforting. Because babies are used to fairly loud levels of sound before they are born, they don’t necessarily “listen” to the softer environmental sounds in the first few months after they are born. This often makes it difficult for parents to identify hearing problems. Babies quickly habituate or get used to sounds and therefore do not respond as parents would expect. By six weeks of age babies lose their startle response to loud sounds and only by five months of age have the head control to turn toward sound sources. Healthy Life Bellydance at Home Belly dancing is considered in some circles purely a dance of seduction or just another form of aerobics. But it’s only when you start looking deeper that you’ll find that bellydancing is in fact a remarkably creative and very artistic expression by highly skilled individuals. Charlotte Blignaut began bellydancing in 1989 and, since 1997, teaches the dance form to her students. The students are taught to dance from their souls and thereby express a pure, individual feminine energy. Charlotte also does not promote the art form as a dance of seduction and is very clear in her intentions when expressing the dance. Apart from dance instruction, Charlotte also runs self-healing workshops, including body mind awareness, BBBrobics and workshops on sensuality vs sexuality.

Healthy Life Skin Doctor Q&A
Declare War on unwanted Fat and Cellulite
Question: “My child was diagnosed with Juvenile Plantar Dermatitis. What is the best treatment?” Answer: Juvenile Plantar Dermatitis, as the name describes, is a dry skin problem or inflammation of the skin of the soles of the feet in children. It usually affects children aged four to eight. It is seen in children who have an atopic (allergy reactions) background, i.e. a history of eczema, asthma, hay fever etc. The skin on the soles of the feet, especially the heels and bottom of the toes, become scaly and fissured (cracked). Some areas may look shiny and glazed. The cracks become very painful to walk on. It is worse during Summer when the sweaty skin of the feet become macerated (soft) due to friction especially with loose fitting shoes and sandals. Treatment involves the use of good quality emollients (to soften the skin) and wearing good fitting shoes with cotton socks. When fissures develop, applying Vaseline and resting the feet is often helpful. A trial of topical steroid cream may be prescribed by the doctor when inflammation is severe. The condition improves with time and in most cases the child will outgrow the condition. Counselling Psychologist
It goes without saying that you want only the best for your growing child. But it has become increasingly difficult to balance your children’s nutrition with the demands of their busy little lifestyles. Research has shown that children who have unhealthy diets, high in unsaturated fats and low in whole food goodness are far more likely to experience behavioural and mental difficulties.
Passionate about the mental wellness of parents and children. Offering individual psychotherapy (for depression, anxiety, bereavement, divorce, etc), couples’ therapy and play therapy for children. Boost Immunity Chewable All-C, although not specifically for children, is a great way to supplement your child’s vitamin C intake. They’ll get the same benefits that you do from this great citrus-flavoured, chewable, nutritional vitamin. Just one tablet a day will boost their immunity, give them quicker healing from illness, and give relief from stress – and, yes, kids also experience stress. Keep these vitamins at hand and use them as a treat, both for the young ones and for you.

Healthy Life Curves‛ Annual Food Drive a Huge Success
Can you tell which one joined for FREE? (These two friends shared 1 joining fee)
Throughout the month of March, Curves members and non-members collected non-perishable foods at Curves Durban North which were donated to a community-based charity, Indlela.
Our 30 minute circuit works every major muscle group two muscles at a time, so you can burn up to 2000 kilojoules. Come experience real fitness and weight management results. Curves - for your fitness and health.
Last year’s Food Drive saw a rise in participation among South African Curves clubs, up to 73% participation vs 50% in 2010. Collectively, the clubs garnered a grand total of 48 465kg, and each club distributed its share to a local charity of its choice. “Our members’ generosity is a true reflection of the Curves family spirit,” commented Dez Heathcote of Curves Durban North. “We raised 3500kg in 2011 and we aimed to break that record this year. We are thrilled with the outstanding support from our members and friends of Curves. The Food Drive is a vital programme that fits in perfectly with the Curves philosophy of caring holistically for women’s health. We look forward to many years of giving back to the community through worthy charities.”

Beautiful Life Therapeutic Gel, Bath & Foot Treatment I had the very unusual experience recently of trying out the G-Spa Therapeutic Gel Bath and Therapeutic Foot Treatment. Carefully following instructions I filled up my bath with water (I recommend quite hot so the temperature lasts longer) to about half full and then sprinkled an innocuous looking packet of powder onto the water. Within minutes the water had turned to a violet-coloured gel made up of thousands of tiny gel beads. I immersed myself in the completely thick substance and breathed in the lovely aromatic scent of lavender, jasmine and bergamot. I had such an urge to move in the gel instead of just wallowing and when my daughter came in to see this scientific wonder she vowed to get herself a whole crate-load of the substance so she could fill up a swimming pool and enjoy it with her friends! Reluctantly reaching the end of my home-spa experience I sprinkled on a second, smaller packet of powder and, voila, the gel beads vanished and the water turned back to liquid again. The following evening my younger daughter and I tried out the Therapeutic Foot treatment. We each filled a five litre container with hot water and tapped in the magic powder. This time the water, now infused with Tea Tree and grapefruit, turned into yellow gel beads and we sat watching TV while our feet squished around in the wondrously comforting goo. Again, a tap of step two and the water returned to normal. Review by Brenda Daniels for Mum’s Mail. Visit www.g-spa.co.za. Contact: Greg Bowman, Altius Trading (Pty) Ltd, 079 484 8824. Beautiful Life “Green” Your Hair Dye Appearances play a very important role and there are many hair dyes and various colour products available on the market. But you do not have to settle for chemically laden products that not only compromise the health of your hair but also your own health. Natural hair colour is an attractive option and it works by depositing rich colour into the hair. Natural colour is gaining popularity and people are switching to natural ways to keep their hair looking healthy and shiny. These hair dyes do the trick without causing allergic reactions, damaging hair follicles or irritating the scalp. Chemicals can reduce the strength and integrity of your hair, which leads to breakage, split ends, brittleness and other negative effects. While natural hair dyes still require some chemicals such as ammonia and peroxide to be effective, there are alternatives that contain either smaller amounts of these chemicals or none at all! Herbatint, for example, is an ammonia-free perma- New Holster styles arriving at Saint Lori nent dye and biodegradable, but it does in April 2012. Tiny Life Potty Training Made Easy These days our biggest obstacle to potty training is that the nappies available are just too good! They keep your little one dry and comfortable through the night and day. The trick to potty training is to feel uncomfortable before changing the status quo (i.e. wet and uncomfortable).
Unplanned pregnancy? Decisions to make? Understanding all your alternatives makes you really feel free to choose. We are here to listen to you. For a confidential caring friend, call us.
With our wonderful weather at this time of year, now is the time to bring out that Lightning McQueen and Barbie underwear. Letting toddlers play in the garden and allowing them to make the connection between the feeling just before and being wet will go a long way in helping them potty train. “I never felt that I ‘trained’ my two children,” said Liz Victor of Toptots. “If you wait till they are ready after the age of two and boys even more towards three it will happen quite quickly. Just remember not to make an issue of it. Accidents are bound to happen and are part of the learning experience.”

Some tips from Sister Ann Richardson: • Decide if you are going to use a potty or the big loo well before the time. • Invest in a potty or a toilet seat with a built-in inner. • Let your toddler go with you to the loo to take the mystery out of it. • Let your husband show your son how to aim. Placing some peas or even a piece of toilet paper in the loo will make it fun to aim for. • Some children don’t like the flushing sound so wait for them to leave before you flush. • If they have “stage fright” turn on the taps. • Have a step ready so they can wash their hands afterwards. Tiny Life Goodies Good Stuff Range Purity announced the launch of their new Purity Goodies Rusks and Biscotti products, carefully hand-pressed and baked by the women of the Khayelitsha Cookie Company (KCC) as part of an Enterprise Development Partnership with Tigerbrands Ltd. Purity is a brand with a heart, a brand that cares. It is launching a range of toddler rusks and biscotti which will in turn provide jobs. The families of the mammas who work at KCC will also benefit through improved education, nutrition and lifestyle. After careful consideration of the project, Tiger Brands agreed to partner KCC. The vision shared by Purity and KCC is to create a company that produces the best toddler cookies in South Africa while also radically changing the lives of the women involved in the company. Each of the ladies working for Khayelitsha Cookies supports a family of five on average per month using their income. Purity’s partnership allows KCC to employ an additional 45 women with a secure income. These 45 women can each then feed another 100 to 150 people monthly in Khayelitsha. Goodies Good Stuff range includes healthy hand-made and individually wrapped rusks and biscotti suitable for toddlers from 18 months up to pre-schoolers. Like all Purity products they are free from preservatives, colours and artificial flavours. Allowing a toddler to feed himself helps to improve hand-eye-mouth co-ordination. The Goodies Rusks and Biscotti are ideal for lunchboxes, parties, outings and travelling. Young Life Beesting Goes Up and Away... “It’s time for us to lift off,” said Losh. Losh did one last quick count just to check that everyone was safely on board Cheekaround’s basket. Beesting showed his excitement with much delight, the wind blowing his little ears back faaaaarrr behind his head. He gave a bark or two when Losh released the ropes and the balloon finally lifted from the ground.
Specialising in maternity, newborn, baby, family and lifestyle photography
Long after they left the ground Beesting was still dashing from one side of the basket to the other afraid he might miss out on something. Finally, exhausted, he came to rest with his little paws on the edge of the basket. The children from Thinta too could not stop their excitement. Saffy and Lesley laughed whilst Becky and Edward spoke so loud that the one could hardly hear the other. Connie held tightly on to Lolla’s hands whilst they watched from below how Cheekaround got fatter by the moment as the warm air filled her balloon belly. When Cheeckaround was finally high up in the sky it was strange how everything from up above seemed so different and rather tiny. After a long while the basket landed on the ground. But what a strange place this is, thought Beesting to himself. He hesitated for a moment before jumping out of the basket. He had never before seen so many creatures who all looked the same. Each one had only one long brown leg and many green arms to the side. Do you perhaps know what the brown creatures with the one leg and many green arms are? They are trees of course.

Young Life Number Fun
Children develop numeracy skills when they use mathematical ideas in their everyday situations. They begin to make sense of these situations by asking questions such as: How many? Does it fit? How big is it? Which way will I go? Is it likely to happen? How much is there? Will there be enough? To encourage numeracy skills in your children do the following: • Talk with them about the number, shape and size of things in, for example, games or constructions. • Drawings, rhymes and stories. Ask questions like: What might happen if...? Why does...? How do you know that...? Point out: • Numbers in magazines, books, signs, prices, packaging and number plates. • How these numbers help us to know how to find things, to know how much, to know how many, and to know which one. Look for opportunities where children can: • Sort, organise and count collections of things like clothes, toys, books, shells, rocks and birthday candles. • Choose from a variety of materials of different shapes and sizes to use for play and solving problems. • Be involved in making plans and designing their own constructions like cubby houses, robots and sand castles. Use this Melissa & Doug Peel & Press Sticker by Number game to help your children develop their numeracy skills. Apply some of the questions above as your child places the stickers and talk to him about the finished product. Enjoy! Visit: www.atoyforyou.co.za and click on “Where to Buy” to see a list of stockists. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 Peel & Press Sticker by Number Mystical Unicorn set to give away. Educated Life Shoe Box Permaculture Garden Permaculture is a very sustainable way of gardening and growing food and promotes the core values of “Care for the Earth”, “Care for People” and “Fair Share”. To find out how to establish a full scale garden at home, school or work you may wish to attend a course at the Durban Botanic Gardens (call 031 - 309 1170 or visit http://permacultureprinciples.com). You can make a start with a shoebox garden and here is how: • Using an old shoe box use the cardboard bottom of the box to act as the first layer of your garden. Cover the bottom of the box with dry brown leaves collected from the garden. • Add a layer of soil, a layer of compost and then a layer of manure. • You then need a layer of seed-free dry grass or straw. • Make holes in the upper layer of straw to plant your seedlings into and then water. This would be ideal for some herbs or some tomato and basil planted together. Anything will actually work.

Educated Life Maths and English: The Key to Success
Give Kumon a Try
Give your child the edge!
Success in Maths and English from an early age enables children to choose a career and not be left with a limited choice due to poor results and skills. The 39.8% pass rate for Maths in 2011 shows that Maths continues to pose serious challenges for learners. Even if learners pass their exams and enter the job market, they still lack fundamental skills in reading, writing and numeracy. This has led to many people in the business community voicing their concern about the lack of these skills amongst young workers. Children need to develop confidence and study skills to learn and achieve, building a firm foundation in core subjects. Unfortunately there is no magic wand or short cut. The only way to develop is by practising to fill in the gaps. By practising a little bit every day, children will increase their fluency and skill so that the information comes to mind easily when they need it. As any sports person will tell you, you don’t get good at something by simply doing it once. You have to practise something over and over again until you get it right. In an area which is particularly challenging, children won’t master it by simply doing it once. Understanding something also doesn’t always come easily. This doesn’t mean that your child can’t do Maths, or that English is fundamentally too difficult. What it often means is that they simply have to work hard at it. In our modern lifestyle, we want everything to happen immediately, and we feel that everything should come easily or there’s something wrong with us. We sometimes just have to work hard and eventually we’ll get it!

Party Life Have a Party with Zorb Balls Zorb Balls by Have-a-Ball are a truly unique experience and the new must-have partyhire accessory! Kids can either strap in and be rolled or they can run free in what is fast becoming known as the “Human Hamster Wheel”. Unlike the water balls, the Zorb Ball has openings for ventilation and is made up of thick, hard plastic, filled with pockets of air, and held together with luminous elastics that also glow in the dark! It looks like a multi-coloured spider rolling through the dark at night – too awesome! The feeling of the ride is exhilarating and addictive - a rollercoaster ride strapped in, or feeling like you’re running on air when you aren’t. Either way it is a rush of adrenaline that is safe for kids and adults. The team at Have-a-Ball hire the ball with or without a facilitator who will roll the ball. Having a facilitator is highly recommended as he/she keeps the ball (and kids) under control. So for your next children’s party, for ages five years upwards, or for your next teambuilding day, school fun day, market day or mini-Olympics event, try out this extremely fun alternative or addition, for a very unique, very fun, very safe and extremely unforgettable experience. Your function will be guaranteed to be a hit! So “have-aball”, hire a “Zorb Ball”! Contact: Kevin, 083 651 3500, info@haveaball.co.za. Visit www.haveaball.co.za. WIN WIN WIN a chance for 1 lucky reader to use a Zorb Ball at their next party. Offer limited to Durban Central through to Ballito areas. A delivery fee will be levied for other areas.

Use What? • Water • Oil • Food colouring • Tall glass • Another cup/glass • Fork Do What? 1. Fill the tall glass almost to the top with room temperature water. Warm water is okay, too. 2. Pour a little oil into the other glass. (1 - 2 tablespoons) 3. Add a couple of drops of food colouring. I used one drop of blue and one drop of red, but you can use any colours. 4. Briefly stir the oil and food colouring mixture with a fork. You want to break up the food colouring drops into smaller drops, but not thoroughly mix the liquid. 5. Pour the oil and colouring mixture into the tall glass. 6. Now watch! The food colouring will slowly sink in the glass, with each droplet expanding outward as it falls, resembling fireworks falling into water. So What? Food colouring dissolves in water, but not in oil. When you stir the food colouring in the oil, you are breaking up the colouring droplets (though drops that come into contact with each other will merge... blue + red = purple). Oil is less dense (http://chemistry. about.com/library/glossary/bldef529a.htm) than water, so the oil will float at the top of the glass. As the coloured drops sink to the bottom of the oil, they mix with the water. The colour diffuses outward as the heavier coloured drop falls to the bottom. Activity courtesy of:

Relaxed Life Ballet Increases Your IQ! Whether you want to become a professional dancer or not, no matter your age, your size, gender, musicality or artistry, ballet is the extramural activity that everyone should be doing! Ballet is a complete brain and body workout. According to a study done at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York City, dancing increases resistance to mental illnesses like Alzheimer’s and dementia by 78% compared to: playing golf – 0%, cycling and swimming – 0%, reading – 35%, doing crossword puzzles – 47%. Ballet uses every part of the brain, develops balance and co-ordination (which in turn enhances thinking and cognitive flexibility) and increases the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin (which is a great stress reliever). Isolation of muscle groups helps people with ADD and ADHD while classical music stimulates alpha waves in the brain. Ballet does not have high impact motions, does wonders for your posture and stimulates circulation. Ballet dancers have higher peak bone mass/density. It enhances energy and keeps you all-round fit. Besides becoming a professional dancer or teacher, other career opportunities include choreographer, Benish notator, directing, musical theatre, stage management, stage or costume design, dance critic/writer, physiotherapy and sports medicine. Ballet is also the platform for all other dance forms, so many more doors are opened Contemporary, Modern, Pilates and Yoga. Springwood School of Dance in Durban North offers classes in Ballet, from tiny tots to adult and beginner classes. Modern, Tap and Hip Hop dancing are also on offer. Classes are given by qualified registered teachers. Springwood strives to give everybody the individual guidance and attention to which they are entitled and instils values of commitment, respect, hard work, discipline and artistry. Relaxed Life “Take Me With” “Little Billy’s mother was always telling him exactly what he was allowed to do and what he was not allowed to do. All the things he was allowed to do were boring. All the things he was not allowed to do were exciting. One of those things he was NEVER NEVER allowed to do, the most exciting of them all, was to go through the garden gate all by himself and explore the world beyond.” – Roald Dahl (The Minpins).

When last did you see a fire fly? Have your children ever, or should I ask, will they ever see fire flies in the wild? My wife and I recently camped over at one of our local dams and were amazed to see these bright little creatures, for the first time in many years, light up the vegetation around our camp site. We realised that there is nothing more rewarding than sharing the adventure of being outdoors with our children and experiencing once again through their eyes, the beauty of nature.
