The Silly Season is Here!
And just like that it is already the end of the year and the Christmas festivities begin. Before we know it, 2018 will be behind us and the New Year will be in full swing. But before that, give yourself time to just breathe….
I hope that you have lots of fun planned over the holidays, celebrating with family and friends. That’s what I love about the Christmas holidays – most people have some time off work so you really do get to spend quality time with your loved ones. In my view, there should be much less emphasis on giving gifts and more about treasuring special friends and family and just enjoying being with them. The Mum’s Mail office closes for a few weeks on 12th December and we are all looking forward to a nice break, after
another VERY busy year! I want to just say a HUGE thank you to our advertisers that have supported us this year and made this little free magazine possible. Thanks also to all our readers for their wonderful feedback and letters that we receive all the time – please continue to support our advertisers where you can! With next year in our sights, we have already started to plan the 6th PMB Ladies Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund, which will be held in PMB in April 2019 - so watch this space for more info…! Have a wonderful December and January love, peace and joy to you and your family. Safe travels! Love Victoria and the Mum’s Mail Team xxx

Silly Season Tips
Silly season has arrived in genuine SA style - hot as all heck! In the hopes of some youthful pearls of wisdom on the silliness of the season, I reveal my column topic to the household teen. Between giant bites of chicken roti and gulps of orange squash he asks what the silly season is. (Err... What exactly do they teach in schools these days?) Without listening for the answer, his worthy advice is to lay off the drugs. “Silly Season,” I interrupt, “is the period leading up to Christmas when folks wind down for the year and start partying and buying...”
which may require assembly. Actually, my top tip is to scrap stressful shopping altogether. Rather scrape together the dough to go somewhere meaningful. Give yourselves a break and spend a day or two communing as a family. For the first time ever in 2017, I did not cook and clean like a woman possessed, rearrange furniture and decor, or swear under my breath at the slackers avoiding enlistment to help perform said tasks. Instead, we escaped reality.
“Ok, he quips through a last mouthful of The boys chortled like Santa in his sleigh as roti, “Don’t lay off the drugs then...” they manoeuvred a golf cart at alarming speed from one hole to the next, hacking I see he’s not going to be much help. their way cluelessly around the golf So from my own meagre arsenal of Silly course, whilst I contemplated my blessings Season tips then... social media is probably alongside a tranquil river. best avoided at this time of year. As for buying gifts; our droll teen might once have been appeased with a sackful of cheap bow-and-arrows and the like, but these days, the celebration of Christ’s birth has less of the makings of a fairy tale and is more like being on the set of Jerry Maguire... “Show me the money!” Not a keen shopper, this suits me just fine, but if you still have littlies, a top shopping tip is to avoid all pressies with foreign instructions www.mumsmail.com

Because I Said So… I have tried, at least for the 10 years that I have been a single parent, to never, ever, use the excuse “because I said so” when telling my Mouse what to do or what not to do. “Because I said so” is a cop-out, I think, and it causes some resentment within a child if my childhood is anything to go by. When asking my parents for something I wanted or something I wanted to do as a child and they said no, I would ask why. At times they would say “because I said so”. It was so unsatisfying and could foster resentment. I remember thinking to myself “why are there two sets of rules?”. It’s the same as: “do as I say and not as I do”. Which is another way of explaining totalitarianism or authoritarianism, and that’s not a way to bring up a child in my mind. For me, open conversation about all things, even the uncomfortable conversations - remember that Dad and Mouse had the birds and the bees talk when she was nine - is very important.
We eventually made a compromise and have WhatsApp groups, but we also have the rule that Dad - until she is sixteen years old - has full access to her phone and to her computer. These are the rules as agreed to. Because it’s my job to protect her. Which was also in answer as to why she couldn’t have a YouTube channel. (Believe it or not there are ten-year-old children out there that have their own YouTube channel!). I’ve explained that it’s the same as social media, where some people out there are predators looking for young and impressionable people. Even though she might think she knows better, online predators are very good at what they do and can make life difficult not only for her, but her family too. Monsters are people and they live online.
“But why?” is often the next question, “soand-so has a YouTube channel” or “there’s a nine-year-old who has their own channel” and my response is that I am not THEIR parent. I don’t know where they are going to be in their lives in the next five to ten years. I am YOUR parent, and my number This strategy can be really hard for people one priority is the protection of YOU. Holiday Activities for Kids
While going out to places during the holidays is great fun, it can get very expensive during the long summer break. Here is a fun activity to try at home that won’t cost a cent. You could try this in the pool, at the beach, or in a river or pond. Explore with an underwater viewer Paddling in rock pools or a shallow sea is far more interesting if you can see below the surface. If you don’t have goggles and a snorkel, why not create your own underwater viewer instead? Take an empty two-litre plastic soda bottle and remove the lid so you can squeeze it flat, then use a pair of craft scissors to cut a slit about 10cm from the bottom. Now re-inflate the bottle, replace the lid and use your scissors to cut from that slit to form a rectangular opening about 20cm up the bottle and 10cm along the top and bottom. You can rub down the edge with sandpaper to smooth it or simply put duct tape around
all the edges to cover any sharp bits. Hold the bottle sideways and submerge the bottom section in the water. You can then look through the hole to see the wonders below. As always, when you are near water, take a grown-up with you.

It’s almost time to enjoy Christmas in all its festive glory. Throw Shade at Skin Cancer this Summer It’s getting hotter, and CANSA encourages the public to be SunSmarter, and throw shade at skin cancer this summer. South Africa is ranked as a leading outdoor adventure destination with glorious weather conditions, beautiful beaches and bushveld, and yet ironically it also has one of the highest monitored ultra violet levels globally. This results in the country’s population having one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Each year during the hot summer months, CANSA steps up its skin cancer awareness communication through its SunSmart Campaign, to remind South Africans of the dangers of over-exposure to the sun. Running from mid-November to January, the campaign includes beach, workplace and school activations, as well as sharing education online on CANSA’s platforms.
especially during summer, as skin cancer remains one of the most common cancers. South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia, and in particular one of the highest incidences of melanoma worldwide, as far as Caucasians are concerned. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. Children should not be getting sunburned at any age, especially since there are a range of very effective sun protection methods that can be used. Minimise time outside during summer when UV levels are at their strongest – between 10am and 3pm. Parents and guardians need to be extra vigilant about sun protection for their infants and toddlers at all times.
For more information about how to protect your family from the harmful CANSA reminds all South Africans to be SunSmart throughout the year and effects of the sun, visit www.cansa.org.za.

Mooimaak Makeovers: Gerda van Tonder
Gerda van Tonder doesn’t like change nor does she have a lot of time, so she was sceptical when her husband entered her into Mooimaak, kykNET’s most exciting makeover show. Still, she’d always wanted to fix her teeth, so she agreed to let the Skin Renewal team, led by Skin Renewal’s Dr Rulene Mare and therapist Lizanne Burton, give her the makeover of a lifetime. Aside from giving her a Hollywood smile with the help of dentist Dr JJ Serfontein, they were also able to help her look ten years younger in just nine weeks!
Eyes Alive Gerda’s eyelids had begun to droop but Skin Renewal’s Jett Plasma Eye Rejuvenation procedure uses an advanced, patented medical device to direct an electrical current into the skin of the eye area. This stimulates it to start producing more collagen, while immediately tightening what exists, and the result is a firmer-looking, hood-free eye.
A Liquid Lift Skin Renewal’s 3D Liquid facelift is another completely knife-free treatment. It involves using dermal fillers to instantly plump areas Beautiful Brows that have lost volume and botulinum toxin To help raise Gerda’s brows, Dr Rulene used injections to relax wrinkles. Un-Ugly your Feet for Summer
Summer is here which means you will be wearing sandals more often. If your feet could do with a makeover, here are some DIY treatments you can do at home to un-ugly your feet! Try this foot soak, followed by the foot scrub – don’t forget to moisturise with a good foot cream afterwards, and wear socks to keep the moisture in overnight. Do this regularly to keep your feet looking beautiful and healthy all summer long!
Detox Daily To Avoid Unhealthy Annual Purge
In a medium sized bowl, combine your brown sugar and white sugar. Whisk them together until they are completely combined. Add in your olive oil and vanilla extract and mash together with a fork until all of the oil is combined into the sugar mixture. Pack the mixture down into a mason jar. To finish, tie a bow around the mouth of the jar with some baker’s twine. Create your own label and stick it on the front of the jar. Now, it is ready for gifting or for immediate use!
Eating a well-balanced, nutrition-rich diet consistently and pursuing a healthy lifestyle will eliminate the need to detox or purge after the holidays, according to a leading nutritional expert. Vanessa Ascencao says consistent healthy eating will also lead to weight loss which will in turn help counter diabetes, heart disease and various other illnesses. Ascencao said various studies show that healthy eating and resultant natural weight loss may reverse or lower diabetes and counter heart disease. Research also shows that consistent weight loss from healthy eating is far better than fluctuating weight loss from fad, detox or crash diets. Try Ascencao’s steps to healthy living: • Develop a nutritious eating plan focused on natural, whole food, including lots of vegetables (especially greens), fruit and some lean protein. • Avoid sugar, alcohol, and coffee, refined and processed foods. These contribute to inflammation, diabetes and disease. Cutting them out will lead to natural weight loss and a stronger immune system. • Try to eliminate dairy. Humans don’t have the enzymes to digest the lactose (a sugar present in milk). Dairy also promotes the formation of mucous and acid to which most of us are allergic or intolerant • Sweat more, daily. Try yoga, brisk walking, cycling or swimming. • Stay hydrated and ditch fizzy drinks which sap B vitamins. Drink lots of filtered water. • Chew food well and eat slowly. This extracts nutrients better and counters overeating. • Choose best quality supplements. • Take probiotics for gut health and try bitter greens such as dandelion, milk thistle and parsley to assist the kidneys, colon and liver in detoxification.• Choose organic produce and eco-friendly hygiene and cleaning products to eliminate chemicals.

Simple Coffee Mud Mask Ingredients: • 2 tsp cosmetic grade clay: White Kaolin is easily available online and in pharmacies. • 1 tsp coffee grounds (you can totally recycle recently brewed coffee grounds • 1 to 1 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar: According to your skin type or sensitivity you can dilute or substitute with Rose Water/ distilled water • 2 - 3 drops Tea Tree Oil (optional) or your favourite essential oil Instructions: Use a plastic or wood spoon to mix ingredients. This will prevent the active clay from drawing metals beforehand, thus maintaining its full absorbency. In a small glass or plastic bowl, mix dry ingredients until well blended. Add apple cider vinegar and essential oil and mix until forming a paste. If the paste is too thick you can add a bit more apple cider vinegar until thinning it out to your desired consistency. Using your fingers, spread mask over your face or desired area. Let it set for five to 15 minutes or until the mask hardens (but before it starts to overly dry and crack or flake). This is crucial: when the mask is damp, your skin is being detoxified and infused with the clay’s minerals, when it starts to harden your blood flow increases as the mask contracts, but once it starts to overly dry you can dehydrate your skin or cause irritation. See why you only need a few minutes a week to work miracles with this mask?

Toys R Us understands that choosing a Christmas gift can be tricky. They not only want to help you find a gift, but want to make choosing the best gift a seamless process. They will be using their expert advice to inform you of what’s new, what’s hot and what’s happening in the awesome world of Toy!
Don’t Lose Your Cool This game tests one’s ability to remain calm under pressure. Players wear the Cool-OMeter unit that measures heart rate, and the opposing team rolls the dice that will determine how they’ll try to get a player to get flustered. For example, opponents might have to get up close to the player and sniff them or make pig noises. If the player reacts - laughs, cringes, flinches, etc. - their heart rate may go up and the meter will rise. They might think that they can hide their reactions, but the Cool-O-Meter will show what’s really going on! When the meter gets high enough, the lights get to
red, the alarm will sound, and the opponent wins that round for making them lose their composure. Speak Out Showdown This game is the electronic “head-to-head” mouthpiece challenge game with ridiculous rambling and random interruptions. Players simultaneously try to get their teammates to correctly guess more correct phrases than their opponents, but the game’s electronic interrupter unit’s hand randomly determines when a player can speak out… or not! Great news for parents – FreshPac Lunchboxes is launching its new online store from December, making it even easier to order your children’s school lunches! FreshPac provides tasteful and healthy prepacked lunches for your children, delivered to their school, for a nominal monthly fee. The lunches are healthy and fresh, and are prepared daily. They use no processed foods, only chicken and lamb, and allergies are catered for. The lunchboxes also include two fruit per day, with a treat every Friday. No more hassle with lunch boxes or lunch bags!
• Premium Pack: R949 (excluding vat) for main meal and two fruit per day which includes a Friday treat. • Superior Pack: R1149 (excluding vat) for a main meal and two fruit, snack and water every day, plus a Friday treat. FreshPac Lunchboxes offers some sound
advice on nutrition in the early childhood years: • Young children need to develop healthy eating and physical activity habits early on. Children pattern habits after parents and caregivers, so good role models are important. • Pre-schoolers quickly grow and change physically, mentally, and socially and need healthy food to meet their growth and developmental needs. These can best be met by following national and/or local food guide recommendations for age two to five. • Meal and snack times teach sharing and socialising skills. Small children have small stomachs and get full quickly, so they need child-sized servings for meals and snacks that respect local traditions and customs. • Note that even pre-school children can learn basic kitchen and gardening skills. For more information call Shantal on 074 891 4415 or 074 034 2494, or e-mail info@freshpac.co.za. Visit their website on www.freshpac.co.za.

The Art of Listening If you had to ask your child to brainstorm ‘how to listen’ - what would he say? Or more importantly, what would YOU say? Listening is in fact not as simple as you think. It is a complex and intricate skill that needs to be taught to an individual and practised.
4. Doodle/note taking The definition of doodle is to ‘scribble absent-mindedly’. If your child can learn to scribble ‘present-mindedly’ in the classroom from an early age, it will result in genius. Your child will need a deep and thorough understanding of how to extract CRITICAL information only.
Four secrets to listening The sooner your child can master these skills the better. Does your child know that NOT all information is IMPORTANT? Does he 1. Stop know how to discern what information is Whenever your child hears a voice directed important and what information is not? at him, he needs to STOP. Stop talking. Stop picking his nose. Stop hitting his brother. Critical vs non-critical information Stop playing. This is not as simple as it You need to first pose the following question sounds, especially in our day where one is to your child; ‘Do you think everything you so technologically consumed. You will need hear is important?’ If he says yes, then you to practice this seemingly simple action at need to explain to him that if he had to home, over and over again, until it has been listen to everything his poor brain would mastered. explode. Science Experiments: Circular Diffusion
Jumping Macaroni
Science Question: What is Diffusion? When molecules move from a place where there are lots of molecules and spread out to a much larger space where there are fewer molecules, that’s called diffusion.
Science Question: Can you defy gravity? The law of gravity states that what comes up will come down. But sometimes other forces can make it appear that gravity is not working. This is a magic trick where you will make macaroni defy gravity and jump up.
Supplies: • 2 Cups water • Microwave safe bowl • 3 Packages of gelatin • Spoon • Cookie sheet • Straw • Food colouring The experiment: Pour the water into a microwave safe bowl and have a parent microwave it until the water is boiling, and then carefully remove the bowl with oven mitts. Pour all 3 packages of gelatin. Stir with a spoon until dissolved. Pour your mixture onto a cookie sheet and let it harden overnight. Take your straw and poke holes in the gelatin mixture about 3 inches (7.5cm) apart. Drop 2 or 3 drops of food colouring into each hole and let it sit for 2 to 3 hours.
Supplies needed: • 3 Boxes dried tube-shaped pasta noodles • Large spool of thin ribbon • Bowl The experiment: Slide macaroni onto the ribbon, making a long pasta ‘snake’ in the bowl. You want it to be at least 5m long, or longer. After you have the string filled with noodles, hold the bowl at about chest height and toss a few inches of macaroni-covered ribbon out of the bowl. The outcome: Your macaroni begins to flow out of the bowl onto the floor, but if you look closely it jumps up several inches out of the bowl before it falls.
Why it worked: This jumping action is called the Mould The outcome: The food colouring spreads out in a perfect Effect. The ribbon and macaroni form a series of hard rods separated by flexible circle around each hole. ribbon. It is physics. As one side of the pasta is lifted, the other side pushes down, Why it worked: This is diffusion, when the food colouring causing it to ‘jump’. The macaroni appears spreads from one place to cover a larger to defy gravity. area. Variation: Add glitter to your mix or use cookie cutters to make gelatin window clings! Did you know? The Decline of Play in Pre-School and the Increase of Sensory Issues
In our ever-changing world, academic success appears to be the most important part of a child’s development. With increased pressure on children, the focus is being taken away from free and meaningful play and placed more on achieving academic goals. Although parents may think that they are doing what is best for their child’s academic development, research has shown that it is in fact through play that children develop the most important skills that they take with them through life.
Allow your child the freedom to get messy, to be creative and imaginative, and explore the world around them. This must be done in an unstructured child-led manner. Here are some ideas for exciting sensory play: • Jump in muddy puddles • Finger paint • Play with boxes • Make blanket tents • Shaving cream fun • Make a mud kitchen • Create art - cutting, sticking, sprinkling glitter or sand • Explore the garden • Run, skip, hop and climb - encourage any movement
The preschool years are when children need to experience a range of sensory experiences on a daily basis. The outdoors is an environment where their senses are fully awakened and the variety of activities and whole body experiences are optimised Do not do anything for your child that they in this environment to develop the child as can do for themselves. Allow your child to a whole. enjoy their childhood. They will learn far more skills than you can imagine, just by Play is the basis for igniting the love of playing. learning. It is through play that children learn important life skills. These include: • Social skills like sharing, turn taking and negotiating • Motor skills, such as running, jumping, climbing and balancing • Developing self-esteem through perseverance and achieving goals • Creative thinking and problem solving skills • Independence These should all be achieved through whole body, natural, unstructured movement and meaningful sensory play. If children are denied these opportunities there is greater risk for them to experience difficulties in their later academic years. These difficulties may present themselves as poor concentration, emotional immaturity, poor problem solving and trouble socialising. Research has shown that there is an increase in sensory, motor and cognitive issues in later childhood and this has been linked to the decrease in free unstructured play in the pre-primary years. www.mumsmail.com

Da Vinci Mystery You, the children of a prestigious family, find yourselves locked in a basement, awaiting your demise. Can you solve the hidden clues that Mother left for you to escape?
“This room was pretty creepy with skulls, bats, rats and insects everywhere – there was even a life size stand up coffin in the room! We had to unlock a serious of chests and cupboards by solving puzzles before having to bravely enter the coffin to see what fate awaited us… We did manage to escape although it took us longer than the hour. I’d definitely go back and try the other room next time!” – Victoria Arthur
“This room was really challenging… we had to crack codes and decipher symbols to open locks and doors and escape before the hour was up. Unfortunately, we didn’t escape within the hour, but were told this is normal on your first attempt. They offer a reduced rate should a team wish to retry the room a second time. Festive Salt Dough Treasures Make fancy decorations, colourful frames, and gift tags using salt dough. Shape it, bake it, and paint for a luscious finish, and transform simple salt dough into these special presents. You will need: • 300g plain flour • 100g salt • 1 tsp cooking oil • 200ml water Make some dough: Pour all ingredients into a mixing bowl, and then mix them together with your hands until you can make a ball. To make decorations: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Roll out some dough to 5mm thickness. Using a round cookie cutter, cut out some round shapes. Place the shapes onto the baking tray and cut out the middles with a star cookie cutter. Take out the centre shapes and place on the tray as well. Use a straw to make a hole in the top of each decoration/shape. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, then leave to cool. Next, paint the decoration to your liking and let dry. Place the decoration over a photo and draw around the edge cut out the photo slightly smaller than the outer edge. Spread glue on the back of the decoration and position the photo in the frame. Leave the glue to dry and attach a ribbon through the hole. Hang your new personalised decorations on your Christmas tree!

To enter our Readers’ Feedback Competition, all you need to do is send us your comments or feedback on companies and services that you found through Mum’s Mail and you could WIN 10 CineCentre movie tickets and a Chateau Gateaux cake! What can I say other than “thank you” to Mum’s Mail who does it “all in one, Mum!” I started reading Mum’s Mail about two years back since my kids started bringing them home each month from school. I’ve planned my daughter’s first birthday using Mum’s Mail, hired party rides and entertainment. Thank you again Mum’s Mail on your excellent work! Ayesha Moolla. Taking your little one to the dentist after a series of bad experiences can be so overwhelming; especially when they are in so much pain. Dreading the mission ahead is even worse when you’re trying to find a new dentist. Mum’s Mail could not have come at a better time this month! Opening this mag, I saw was Family Dental Care staring at me and I instantly felt a sense of relief and calm and an instinct telling me my search was over. I was so delighted to see the number of branches available and made an appointment immediately. I am so pleased to say that it was the most pleasant experience for my little one. My only regret was not finding them sooner. Thanks to Mum’s Mail for coming to the rescue yet again! Nazmeera Sahib.
The winning comment is from Nazmeera Sahib, who will receive 10 Cine Centre movie tickets plus a Chateau Gateaux cake! Send your feedback to editor@mumsmail.com to stand a chance to WIN too! 59

Bargain Books Book Reviews
A Map of Days by Ransom Riggs. The peculiar world of Miss Peregrine and her remarkable companions returns with a brand-new story arc set in America. A Map of Days delivers more of those fantastically haunting photographs (see cover), memorable characters, fast-paced excitement and time-loop distortions as it adds a new dimension to the much-loved and inevitably fascinating world that has made the series so rightfully popular. Diary of a Wimpy Kid 13: THE MELTDOWN by Jeff Kinney. Jeff Kinney’s hilarious, mind-blowingly popular DOAWK series has its thirteenth instalment at last… and resident wimpy kid Greg Heffley has managed to get himself into an all-out war! Complete with all the humour, quirk and agonising middle school crises that make this series a firm favourite, The Meltdown proves once again why nobody can stop reading these books. For adults Murder Mile by Lynda La Plante. Featuring La Plante’s rare eye for detail and knack for the seemingly implausible yet realistic particulars of crime, Murder Mile joins Jane Tennison just as she is starting out on her storied career. It’s 1979 and Britain is in economic chaos. Tennison (detective sergeant at this point) has just been posted to Peckham – one of London’s most brutal and unmanageable areas. Within two days, her department has two dead bodies on its hands. The only connection between the two victims is the location at which they were discovered. When another body is discovered three days later and there are still no suspects, the press begins to scream that an incompetent police force is being fooled with by an unknown serial killer. Tennison, sleep deprived and dealing with an impossible burden of pressure is tasked with catching the killer before another victim surfaces but every discovery she makes leaves her more unsure of her own mind. Royal Mistress by Takalani M. The Royal Mistress poignantly explores the feuding intersection of duty and yearning, arranged marriage and true love. As a royal, Mulatshawe is required to do what is expected of him. Not since he was very young has his life been his own. He must do what is right for the family and, in this case, that means marrying a perfectly picked princess for whom he has no genuine feeling and leaving behind the woman for whom he truly yearns. As turmoil within the royal family grows, will Mulatshawe do what is demanded of him and forsake a chance at true love, or will he defy the traditions and decrees of his position?
