Editor’s Life

And did anyone else’s child throw the baby out with the bath water? My daughter “recycled” last year’s perfectly good atlas – no, she did not keep it to re-use this year, she supposedly accidentally binned it in the paper recycling…the joys of raising a 12-going-on-18er. But February is the month of love not war, so I have declared a cease fire with immediate effect.

If you hate Valentine’s Day for all it represents and the blatant commercial extortion of couples in love, stop reading right now – I would hate to be held responsible for your nausea. I happen to luuurve February, as my husband always improves on Valentine’s Day each year. It’s a bit of a love fest actually, and not the way you think! Last year my friend Carla and I planned a special Valentine’s evening (dinner and live music), but if you’re a regular reader of Mum’s Mail, you’ll remember the disaster that it turned out to be…so I am really looking forward to the 14th of February this year, as the pressure is off me! Not the girls’ turn to plan anything!

With the warm and fuzzy (or in my case, hot and sweaty) feelings of the festive season but a distant memory, the start to 2012 has been a flurry of book covering and backto-working. Thankfully I no longer know what is fashionable in a grade 7’s eyes when it comes to book covering, so I escaped having to ensure this arduous task! Who would have guessed that my suggestions for funky wrapping paper could be SO last season? Apparently they are...

Laid Back Life For Children:

BOOKS: • Jason Justus and the Thing under the Floor by South African author, Carina Diedericks-Hugo, is the exciting adventure of how Jason and his best friends, PJ and Tessa, uncover a sinister crime at their school, Southern Cross Primary. In Jason Justus and the Mystery of the Green and Gold the three friends enter a competition and have to deal with nasty opponents, the Super Ms. The stories are relevant and engrossing, and the characters likeable and well-developed. Great reading for children aged 9 to 12. Published by Pearson Education. Cost: R49.95 each. DVDs: • Sammy’s Adventures – The Secret Passage. Sammy the turtle looks back over his life and remembers the many difficulties he had to endure, how he pursued love without giving up and how his encounters with humans were a mixture of good and bad. A NuMetro release.

For Adults:

DVDs: • Trust is a realistic and very sobering account of how paedophiles can use the Internet to lure and take advantage of impressionable children. The film carefully portrays how parents can downplay Internet abuse, how naive teens can get sucked in by clever, manipulative adults posing as youngsters, and how individuals and families suffer the terrible consequences. The film stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener and Viola Davis, carries an age restriction of 16 and is endorsed by Childline. Cost: R100. Available: Childline, 031 – 312 0904. • Crazy, Stupid, Love, starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling tracks the story of a divorcee’s after-marriage dating experiences. Still in love with his ex-wife, Cal Weaver (Carell) is hopelessly out of touch until the suave and experienced Jacob Palmer (Gosling) takes him under his wing and reintroduces him to the dating game. Despite the light-hearted nature with which the subject is treated Crazy, Stupid, Love touches on the human need for real acceptance, love and commitment. A NuMetro release. BOOKS: • An Inconvenient Youth – Julius Malema and the “New” ANC. Fiona Forde, an Irish journalist based in Cape Town, does an excellent job of delving into the motives behind ANC Youth League, Julius Malema’s political style. Far from being just about Malema, the book gives an interesting account of how the ANC has changed in the hundred years of its existence. It also examines South Africa’s democracy, labelling it a “managed democracy”, which rules by “corporatism”. A very enlightening read. Published by Picador Africa (a Pan Macmillan imprint). Cost: R150. • Dr Kat’s Kitchen. This brand new recipe book by Dr Naseeba Kathrada is aimed at helping the reader lose weight. It includes recipes of all sorts from breakfasts to soups, chicken to cakes, vegetarian to beverages, and a section on recommended food group portions. The recipes are designed to be simple and are each accompanied by a calorie count. Ingredients are low fat. Available from the author, 86 Jan Hofmeyr Road, Westville or www.drkats.co.za. Cost: R120. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each book & DVD (excluding Trust) + 3 copies of Dr Kat’s Kitchen to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Valentine’s Life Cruising the Indian Ocean My husband and I set sail on the MSC Sinfonia from Durban harbour for Portuguese Island on Friday 13 January, courtesy of MSC Starlight Cruises. Despite associated bad omens with Friday the 13th, we enjoyed perfect Summer weather and (fairly) calm sailing conditions, returning safely to Durban three nights later. We were two of 2170 passengers onboard this immaculately maintained, regular visitor to South African waters. The cruise-ship industry has grown substantially here in the last 15 years. Currently, about 7200 happy passengers per week embark from Durban for cruises to Bazaruto, Maputo and elsewhere. And if you thought those passengers were just the rich and famous – think again. Firstly, this particular cruise costs around R3800 per person (which includes entertainment and meals, and is for an outside cabin). Port and service fees (tips) cost R590 per person, and all drinks, other activities onboard (e.g. gambling) and excursions are extra. The drinks are quite expensive – we paid half as much as our cruise tickets on these and the extra activities. But children under 18 travelling with their parents don’t pay a cruise fair, so a holiday of this nature is an affordable option for families. Secondly, all entertainment and facilities are designed to appeal to the widest possible range of people (I recommend you choose ahead, as there is so much to do you’ll be exhausted if you try everything). We especially enjoyed the evening shows (EXTREMELY professional), the Manhattan bar (which plays light background music) and relaxing on the pool deck (with a Pińa Colada in hand). A word on the shows: the Sinfonia has a number of set shows per season which are choreographed especially for the ship and its travellers. My husband enjoyed Grand Gala Vegas so much he saw it twice (which, incidentally, is possible, since each evening show is performed twice).

view (duh!) which was quiet, and nicely proportioned and furnished. Other accommodation includes inside cabins (with no natural light), and outside cabins with balconies. There are two family cabins. Hairdryers, soap and shampoo are provided – and you can purchase any toiletries you may have forgotten. We travelled only with hand luggage (a 36cmx54cmx20cm wheelie bag each) which made embarking and disembarking MUCH easier. Besides, you need mostly casual clothes, with a smartish outfit for dinner – and LOTS of sunscreen. All drinking and bathroom water is desalinated on the ship and the swimming pool is filled daily with sea water. I enjoyed the freedom of feeling that I could shower in a whole ocean of water and used the Spa’s “Cold Fog” and “Tropical Rain” shower with abandon! Since we were celebrating our 21st wedding anniversary we treated ourselves to a fabulous Balinese couple’s massage in the onboard Spa – blissful. In fact, celebrating any special occasion onboard is a fantastic idea. Did you know that there are five weddings per cruise? That’s 150 in a season. And the captain (Master) of the MSC Sinfonia, Ciro Pinto, attends them all. That means, in the six years he’s been cruising from South Africa, he has attended 900 weddings! Birthday parties, renewal of vows and proposals are also frequently celebrated. With Valentine’s Day coming up in February, consider booking a cruise for the perfect romantic getaway!

Valentine’s Life Don’t Dress for Dinner KickstArt proudly presents Marc Camoletti’s hilarious comedy about couples as a classy Valentine’s treat! Don’t Dress for Dinner is a nifty comedy farce about double adultery and gourmet cooking that will have you crying with laughter and begging for more! In a stylish private game lodge somewhere near the Kruger Park, Bernie is hoping to entertain his chic Johannesburg celebrity mistress, Suzy, for the weekend. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook to furnish gourmet delights, is in the process of packing off his wife, Jackie, to her mother’s for the weekend, and has even invited along his best friend Rob as a suitable alibi. It’s foolproof. What can possibly go wrong…? Of course, everything does! It is in fact the perfect recipe for an evening of hilarious confusion as Bernie and Robbie try to escape the ire of the ladies by improvising at breakneck speed. The glamorous production fields an all-star local cast, headed by Tim Wells as the naughty ladies’ man, Bernie, and Bryan Hiles as his hapless best friend Rob. Clare Mortimer and Jailoshini Naidoo play Bernie’s wife and mistress respectively, while Janna Ramos-Violante plays the spunky Afrikaans chef, Suzette. Her husband, the slightly sinister George, is played by Nhlakanipho Manqele. Don’t Dress for Dinner runs at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre 9 to 26 February, 7.30pm (Tuesday to Saturday), 2.30pm (Saturday) and 5pm Sunday. Cost: R130 (discount for students or pensioners). There will be a special Gala Valentine’s performance on Tuesday 14 February. Cost: R160, including a glass of sparkling wine (no discounts). Book at Computicket, 0861 915 8000. Our Full Day Spa Experience started with a soothing, cleansing foot bath, followed by a Full Body Exfoliation and shower, and then the BEST Hot Stone Full Body Massage (which lasted for almost 2 hours). I have never had such a fantastic massage and recommend that if you cannot get to do the full day spa package, you simple HAVE TO book the Hot Stone Full Body Massage – and that’s not negotiable! A session of Floatation Therapy was a warm and relaxing half hour, followed by a shower and some chill time in the tastefully decorated Hydrotherapy area – an indoor pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and Rasul room were all tempting, but I slothfully lay about on one of the loungers. A light, healthy lunch was followed by a Hand and Foot Revival Mani and Pedi, and a few glasses of champers...pure bliss! A Hydradermie Facial was the ultimate treatment to bring an end to an amazing day – and the painting of finger and toenails is cleverly kept for when you are relaxing on a heated bed/chair with your mask on. Bottled water with a custom-made label for Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin and your name printed onto a gorgeous tag for your locker are both very special touches. I am totally sold on Brigit Filmer’s Spa! Call 031 – 767 1668 or e-mail brigits@iafrica.com or visit www.brigitfilmer.com for more info.

Dad’s Life Simon Says... My 13 year old daughter’s two spin doctors are 1) her blow dryer and 2) her BlackBerry. The one, with an infernal noise-pollution muzzle, she points at her head daily – a contraption responsible for every hairstyle permutation known to women since Cave Man days. The other is a space-age remote that opens her star gate into encrypted communication with the teenage world. “All Hail Roxia Media Manager: dispatch my new ‘image’ to every male BBM buddy at the push of this button!” World domination in the palm of each hand. I try to talk to her when she’s blow drying her hair, and I’m Odysseus wrestling with Aeolus, the god of wind. Finally the howling stops and, eager to get a word in I ask her how her school project went (the one I was up all night making for her and am keen to know how I fared). But her BlackBerry is already in her hand. With a sudden deadpan expression she begins to “encrypt”….and any and all attempts to get her attention are futile. I travel back to my teen years and remember the girl I had a crush on: Bridgit. Her hair plain and her number always out of order. I had three friends, a landline and a public telephone a block away… Three decades later, my daughter has 2000 Facebook friends, 300 BBM chat mates, owns four cell phones, a laptop, a computer with Internet access and a BlackBerry. She talks to an average of 100 people daily and is obsessed with her “image”. How did a teenager go from being a normal child to the flippin’ First Lady in just 30 years? Submitted By: Simon Stengel.

While Trevor’s background is in sales and marketing, he has always had a keen interest in photography. Several years ago his company was offered the distribution of a main brand camera agency in KZN. He quickly learned the ins and outs of the cameras and began to sell studio lighting equipment and photographic accessories as well. As his interest in photography developed into an obsession, Trevor gradually moved behind the lens and in January 2009 started Picsell Photography. “The late Berenice Abbot once said ‘photography helps people to see’ which is quite an apt quote. A picture can simply record an event but with a little care in composition it can also tell a story,” said Trevor. To view a selection of Trevor’s photographs visit www.picsell.smugmug. com. Business Life KWAZULU-NATAL SO CIETY FOR THE BLIND

Children Are Forever As parents, you will know by now that your love and attachment for your children will endure. In spite of all the pain, heartache and expense they may cause you, your parental commitment - well, a normal person’s parental commitment – will last forever. One of the best Bill Cosby shows was centred around his wife telling him that his adult son and their daughter-in-law were about to move back into the Cosby family home. Bill Cosby leapt to his feet, his eyes wide, his voice raised in anguish. “Don’t let those people in here,” he shrieked, “we’ll never get them out again!” Bill Cosby’s fear would be very real in South Africa, save for this: the duty to support your children does not depend on whether they can trick you into letting them move back into the house. The duty exists anyway.

The duty of support arises from the mere fact that you are the parent of a child. Both parents are required to support that child, according to their means. It’s a duty, so don’t expect too much in the way of gratitude. Just hope that the child learns well and goes out into the world to fight the good fight and live as good a life as possible…

And if she comes back? You still have the duty to support her. The standard decreases when “children” become adults, but it never goes away.

So, if your previously happily married daughter returns, hand outstretched, with two children - you are liable to support them too! Can you claim from the errant spouse? Yes, indeed, but that is another story.

Buyers Beware Purchasing property can be one of the biggest investments you ever make. The financial burden and risk involved is one that can impact negatively or positively for the rest of your life. As a result, the process of signing an agreement should be one that is done with the utmost care and certainty. Purchasers (buyers) of property must be aware of the importance of reading and understanding each clause in a sale agreement. Never sign anything that you do not understand. Make sure any deposit is paid into an attorney’s trust account. If not, there is the risk that the seller could abscond with the deposit. It is advisable to arrange for that deposit to be invested in an interest bearing account, which will require you giving FICA information to the attorneys. Generally the transfer of property will be conditional upon the purchaser getting an approved mortgage bond. In the absence of such a clause, the purchaser undertakes to pay the full purchase price unconditionally and, failing to do so, runs the risk of being sued by the seller for the full purchase price.

Could you still pay your bills if you were diagnosed with cancer, stroke or a heart attack?

The purchaser must understand the “voetstoets” clause. In common law all defects that are not evident on inspection (latent defects), are the liability of the seller. But common to most agreements is the voetstoets clause which means that the property is sold “as is”, meaning that all latent and patent defects are the liability of the purchaser upon transfer of the property. This clause does not apply when buying property from a developer or when buying from a seller selling a property in the course of its business.

Green Life Make Every Drop Count What started as a husband-and-wife hobby on the weekend turned into a flourishing business when Home Organic was founded in April 2009 by Andrew and Karen Donkin. Home Organic specialises in instant, monkey-proof veggie and herb garden units. But Home Organic wanted to do more within the eco-environment and founded Every Drop Counts Rainwater Harvesting systems, perfect for the use of lawn watering, toilet cisterns, washing machines, washing cars, swimming pool top-ups, and saving on sewerage costs. Andrew Donkin teamed up with his brother, Stuart, and the two designed an effective, economical and practical solution to capturing and utilising rainfall. Every Drop Counts offers complete, fitted, home rainwater harvesting systems which comprise a capturing, storage and distribution system. Water is pumped at high pressure into the garden’s watering system, allowing owners to irrigate gardens with pure unchlorinated rainwater. A 12V solar-powered pump powers the supply with a backup supply, using municipal-supplied water (ensuring the storage tank never runs dry). The whole system runs on one-way valves and at the turn of a stopcock, municipal water supply can be restored. The solar system can also be added on to, and utiladrienne@greeneverything.co.za 082 774 2831 ised in, low electrical usage. Every Drop Counts rainwater harvesting uses standard above-ground reservoir tanks. The harvested rainwater is pre-filtered to remove leaves, TREE FROG LANDSCAPES dirt and debris before entering the INDIGENOUS & ECO-FRIENDLY reservoir tanks. Green Life Make a Difference It’s the only Earth we have! So have separate bins for plastic, glass, tins and paper. Recycle from the source. Make your own compost heap by throwing in vegetable waste, newspaper, tea bags and anything that will decompose. Own a worm farm to recycle organic waste. You will be rewarded with liquid fertiliser and compost from the worms. Plant, using the compost and diluted liquid fertiliser as a food for healthy chemical-free vegetables and herbs.

Grow your own vegetables. The kids will love eating carrots they have grown themselves. Select a sunny spot. Prepare the area by digging in your home-made compost together with the worm compost. Start small, choosing only a few herbs and veggies, and plant in rotation to ensure a continuous harvest. Water well. Plant marigolds and nasturtiums between the vegetables to prevent aphids and other insect attacks. Mulching is critical. Mulching maintains soil temperature. Apply organic material to cover the soil - compost, leaves, lawn clippings, newspaper - anything that decomposes. Mulching traps moisture while preventing weeds germinating. Harvest rain water. Install a rain-water tank to capture water for watering plants, washing cars and window. By harvesting rain water, you will reduce water costs while reducing storm-water runoff which helps prevent erosion.

Home Life Has Your Insurance Claim Been Declined?

The Cushion Co. Affordable Exclusivity

Mum’s Mail reader, Olivia Schroeder, has had trouble with the denial of a recent insurance claim for her damaged swimming pool. This has led to her asking the following questions: 1. What is actually covered by household insurance? 2. Why are insurance contracts not written in layman’s terms [Ed’s note: according to the new consumer act they should be]. 3. Why have so many water-related claims been denied in the recent past [according to Olivia, because of the high number of these claims since the rains in November 2011, many people she has spoken to have had water-insurance claims denied]. Here is Olivia’s story in brief: “My swimming pool was leaking, so I drained the pool so that I could do repairs. Before it was completed, it started raining. The rain continued for over two weeks. This caused water to get in under the cement pool and it lifted out of the ground. I lodged a claim with [my insurance company]... A month later, after numerous calls and unreturned messages I was informed that my claim would not be paid due to the damage being caused by a rise in the water table. This fact is contradictory to their engineer’s report that states that because I have a river across the road this should not occur... [The company] informed me that household insurance generally covers fire damage (not caused/foreseeable by you) and storm damage. Any damage caused by something that you thought might happen and you did not pay a professional to repair is not covered.”

Home Life Omo Liquid Detergent New OMO Auto Liquid Detergent removes stains without the need for additional pre–treating detergents. Its 2 x concentrated formula, with 2 x active cleaning molecules, dissolves quicker and penetrates deeper into the fibres of clothes removing tough stains. OMO Liquid Detergent can be used in a top or front loader. You simply need to put the liquid into the same drawer you would put your powder. All you need is just one small cap for an entire load of laundry in order to achieve amazing results. If you have a stain on your clothes, dab the liquid directly onto the stain and place in the wash. Liquids have a lot of benefits other than cleaning, they dissolve better, because they penetrate fibres easier, which means they clean and protect at a deeper level than a powder without leaving any residue. The fragrance also lasts longer on your clothing. Plus, they are more convenient to use – because there is no need to decant and no clumping in your machine. Lastly, they also offer benefits to the environment since the bottles are smaller – hence less packaging, plus the bottles are recyclable. By using the correct dose you’ll save unnecessary detergent and money. Overall, liquids are the new better way to do laundry! Comfort Concentrated Softener is also a new arrival from Unilever. Being a concentrate, it doesn’t need to be diluted. Just one small cap is all you need to wash the same amount of clothes as with regular fabric softeners. Visit www.comfortsoftener. co.za for more info.

Home Life Snake Advice from Crocworld According to Martin Rodrigues, manager at Crocworld, “Southern Africa is home to approximately 180 species and sub-species of snakes, and of these only 25 are considered to be potentially lethal to humans.” The South Coast’s rich biodiversity means that the area is home to a multitude of non-venomous and venomous snakes. The most commonly encountered venomous snakes include: Green and Black Mamba, Puff Adder, Rinkhals, Common Night Adder, Boomslang, Mozambique Spitting Cobra, Bibron’s Stiletto Snake, Natal Black Snake and the Vine Snake. In Southern Africa, venomous snakes will have one of three main venom types, namely Neurotoxic (a nerve-paralysing venom e.g. Green Mamba), Cytotoxic (a tissue-destroying venom e.g. Puff Adder) and Haemotoxic (affects the blood clotting mechanism e.g. Boomslang or Vine Snake). If bitten by a venomous snake, knowing the species allows for speedy and suitable treatment, although in most cases the doctor will also be able to determine the species of venomous snake by the symptoms the victim experiences. A preferable option to treatment is always prevention. According to Rodrigues, “Snakes will not attack humans unprovoked. Most snake bites occur when the snake is cornered and feels threatened or when someone accidentally stands on the snake. Firstly, one should always treat all snakes with respect and should not attempt to catch or kill snakes as this will increase the risk of being bitten. If you come close to a snake remain perfectly still and wait for the snake to retreat. Should you be a distance away from the snake, move slowly backwards while keeping eye contact with the snake, as snakes easily sense movement and pick up on ground vibrations. Wear shoes if you are walking around at night.” Contact: Crocworld, 039 - 976 1103.

Home Life World Wetlands Day: 2 February A wetland is an area of land with saturated moisture in the soil, either permanently or seasonally. It may be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. Wetlands include swamps, marshes and bogs. The water can be saltwater, freshwater or brackish. They are amazing ecosystems with the banks and water teeming with life - water plants, fish, crabs, amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds, mammals and trees. Wetland areas within cities can provide essential links to green corridors of life and need to be protected. Bad town planning has often overlooked the value of wetlands, opting to fill them in in order to provide building land. The consequences can be tragic, not only resulting in the loss of habitats but also limiting the function of wetlands as a natural filter for the water table and taking away their ability to absorb flood water. Excess water from heavy rain cannot be soaked up in an asphalted car park or shopping mall. No wonder there has been an increase in floods worldwide over the past few years - there is simply nowhere for heavy rainfall to soak away. Why not visit your local wetland and learn about the ecosystem and what you can do to protect it? For further information for suitable school visits in Durban contact: Durban Green Corridor, 031 – 303 8476 (they have activities throughout the city including The Green Hub, Blue Lagoon, now a centre for environmental education); The Beachwood Mangroves, 072 339 6113 (a fabulous example of how pristine a wetland in an inner city environment can be. Home Life Bukaminas Joins Forces with the Thunga Sewing Group Bukaminas Design, which customers came to know for the brand’s hand-embroidered skirts in 2011, has joined forces with the Thunga sewing project at the Shakashead Community Centre for their next project. Bukaminas is introducing “Bukaminas recycled”, a stunning range of scatter cushions made from the vast amount of leftover fabric their skirts have generated. To make the project even more “green”, each cushion will sport a hand-embroidered message or quote. Bukaminas heard about the Thunga sewing project last year. In an effort to help with job creation on the North Coast, Bukaminas asked the ladies involved to assist with production. The ladies will initially assist with sewing the patches together and, as skills develop, will hopefully soon be able to complete the entire manufacturing process, including the hand embroidery. The idea is to work together with Jenny and Margie (project co-ordinators) to assist the ladies in growing their already established CMT production. For information on Thunga, please contact Jenny Pringle on 083 655 8088. To order cushions contact: Brenda Scheepers, 084 842 6671, designer@bukaminas.co.za. SPECIAL OFFER FOR FEBRUARY: Receive R80 off all skirts for the month of February by presenting this original article (i.e. you pay R280 instead of R360). Offer only valid for skirts in stock, bought directly from Bukaminas. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 2 scatter cushions (from available stock) to give away to 2 lucky readers. To help them, focus on choosing the right exercises for their age to avoid frustration and boredom. Activities should be fun to do, should use the large muscle groups, and should be done with friends or family at least part of the time. Toddlers should have up to two hours of exercise daily (e.g. incidental exercise like walking to the park). Kids aged five and up should exercise a minimum of 60 minutes daily (e.g. biking, swimming, dancing). Teens need vigorous exercise for about one hour three times per week (e.g. volleyball in the garden, games room in the house, Zumba classes at the gym, active hobbies outdoors). Once girls hit puberty, their exercise needs begin differing to boys. Osteoporosis and joint ailments are very serious threats amongst women today, and prevention of these dangerous diseases starts from childhood. But remember, excessive cardio and being thin is not the way to go! Regular strength training is important to build muscle and bone mass. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women globally, with approximately 493 000 new cases diagnosed annually. Up to 99% of invasive cervical cancers are associated with high risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) types. HPV is a common infection seen in sexually active women. The highest risk of infection occurs in adolescents 15 to 19 years of age.

The recent development of the HPV vaccines to combat the impact of HPV on the cervix has the potential to significantly decrease the incidence of cervical cancer globally. Administration of these vaccines to patients will produce neutralising antibodies which prevent the entry of HPV into the cervical cells, therefore preventing cervical cancer.

There are two vaccines available. One vaccine protects against HPV 16 and 18 while the other vaccine prevents HPV 16 and 18 (responsible for cervical cancer) as well as HPV 6 and 11 (responsible for 90% of anogenital warts). It is estimated that 10% of men and women will have genital warts in their lifetime. Ideally the vaccine should be given prior to sexual activity. It is given as three doses at zero, two and six months. It is recommended for all women aged between nine and 26 years of age. It can be administered to older women and males. The vaccine together with education will go a long way in combating cervical cancer.

The Free Vitamin!

B. Comm Path (UKZN), M. Comm Path (UKZN) Pr. No.: 0196592

Most people are deficient in vitamin D and yet this particular vitamin is free of charge. This is because vitamin D, known as the sunshine vitamin, is produced in your skin when you are exposed to UVB rays. Being overexposed to the sun is a problem but around 30 minutes of sun exposure a day is recommended for the production of this essential vitamin. This should be done outside of the danger times 11am to 3pm at a UV index of less than three. Note that sunscreen prevents UVB and UVA rays from penetrating our skins and producing vitamin D3.

Proudly announces the opening of her Speech Therapy Practice at Parklands Hospital

Studies have shown that colon and breast cancers are more common in people who are exposed to less daily sunlight. Vitamin D binds to T cells which fight cancers, viruses and bacteria. The more sunlight, the more vitamin D is produced, the stronger the immune system and the more chance the body has of fighting off cancers. Vitamin D also seems to play an immune-boosting role in good bone and brain health and many other factors in the body. But sunshine isn’t the only option. Many foods are fortified with vitamin D and available naturally in some fatty fish and through supplementation. Vitamin D is fat soluble and found in the oily layer under the skin of fatty fish (e.g. cod liver oil, salmon), so keep this in mind when preparing it.

Suite 6, Parklands Hospital, 45 Hopelands Road, Overport T: 031 - 822 4142 • C: 073 607 7289 • F: 086 768 3280 speech.zaheera@gmail.com

• Neonatal screening (test at birth) • Paediatric & adult hearing assessments • Balance assessments • Hearing aids & assistive listening devices (children and adults) • Parent guidance and rehabilitation for hearing impaired children and their families • School hearing screening • Eustachian tube function and middle ear tests

The recommended intake (RDA) for supplementation of vitamin D in the form vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is at least 600 IU per day. Get your vitamin D levels checked, speak to your specialist and adjust your intake accordingly. This is proof that the best things in life really are free!

Healthy Life Migraine Linked to Domestic Violence Researchers at the University of Washington have just released a study confirming that women with experiences of lifetime physical or sexual violence have increased probability of migraine. The study was published in ‘Headache’ the official journal of the American Headache Society. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between intimate partner violence (physical, psychological or sexual violence) and migraine in a large group of women. Dr Elliot Shevel, the chairman of the International Headache Society’s South African branch, explained: “2066 women who had delivered babies were interviewed during their post-natal hospital stay. The women were interviewed in private using a structured questionnaire that collected information on socio-demographic factors, lifetime experience with intimate partner violence, characteristics of headache and depressive symptoms. Overall, the prevalence of intimate partner violence with migraineurs was 47.4% in comparison to only 36.2% of non-migraineurs. For women with migraine, screening for past and current intimate partner violence (particularly sexual violence) during medical consultation is of great value. Furthermore, women need to be offered appropriate interventions that can help mitigate the occurrence and consequences of violence. If the violence has ended, then screening for past intimate partner violence is still important to investigate its possible cause in migraine and for the integral treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders.” For more information contact The Headache Clinic, 0861 678 911.

Up to 90% of children do not get all the nutrients they need from their diets. As such, it is necessary to supplement children’s intake with multivitamins and minerals. Also important are whole food nutrients such as grain oils which are proven to assist with the absorption of nutrients and are good for adrenal gland function.

031 - 566 0030 031 - 566 0029

DR ROGER POWELL D.C.(USA)

Without all the proper nutrients, cell membranes cannot effectively absorb nutrients and excrete waste. As a result cells become “sluggish” and are unable to produce energy.

As a result of neck injuries, however slight, you may well be suffering from SINUS, HEADACHES, MIGRAINES, NECK & ARM PAIN, WEIGHT GAIN, LOW RESISTANCE, ANXIETY, LOSS OF VITALITY & LIBIDO, DEPRESSION, IRRITABILITY, RHEUMATISM AND INSOMNIA as well as many other symptoms or sicknesses related to NEUROLOGIC or VASCULAR DEFICITS. The root of your problem will most likely be in your lower neck, in the area of C5/C6 and labelled SPONDYLOSIS or LOSS OF LORDOSIS.

There are several benefits to supplementing. Multi-vitamins and minerals improve attention and brain function. Girls who supplement their diets with calcium and vitamin D grow taller and are stronger in their teens. Zinc helps children think, really important when it comes to coping at school.

Healthy Life Living with Infertility Debbie Ivins of Pinetown longed to have her own children. She still does. During her difficult journey with IVF, miscarriage and more, Debbie began sharing her story with friends and family via e-mail. These e-mails have now been compiled into a little book. Once Debbie’s story became known, many women (and some men) responded to her honesty, and her real yet hopeful response to suffering.

Confessing herself as “very ordinary” Debbie was surprised by the people who opened up to her. People with seemingly perfect lives and careers were also battling infertility, and suffering for it. Debbie’s response to these people was to listen, to acknowledge the pain, to empathise and to teach others how to respond. She now does this full time, replying personally to e-mails and spending time one-on-one with people.

Beautiful Life Vaser Lipo Whether you’d like to lose a few kilos or inches around your waist, thighs, hips, back or arms or finely sculpt your body, Vaser Lipo gives you the results you want. This revolutionary fat-removal procedure is a safe and less painful alternative to traditional liposuction. Using a technique called LipoSelection, it targets specific areas of the body. Ultrasonic waves break up and separate fat cells for removal, while leaving vital tissues undamaged. How it Works: • The fatty layer is infused with tumescent fluid. • The high frequency vibration of Vaser ultrasonic probes causes the fat cells to break apart and emulsify into the infusion fluid. • Emulsified fat is easily removed via a specially designed VentX Suction Cannulae or massage, i.e. the fat cells are gently suctioned out - you can see it for yourself! • During the healing process, your skin will retract to give you a smooth, natural-looking result. Benefits of Vaser Lipo vs Traditional Liposuction: • Instant results, minimally invasive, minimal swelling, no bruising, little or no pain. • Smooth, predictable results, fast recovery, no stay over. • Minimal down time, local anaesthetic used. • Traditional liposuction can result in lumpy or uneven areas. • Mostly no repeat treatments necessary in same area. • Great for tight, fibrous areas such as the back and posterior flanks, where increased blood loss would be expected. Contour Aesthetics provides a cost-effective, high-quality professional service by a physician who is also a qualified Vaser practitioner. Contact: Contour Aesthetics, 083 786 9336, info@contouraesthetics.co.za. Visit www.contouraesthetics.co.za.

INSTANTLY remove those holiday bulges! NO repeat treatments in the same area required!

Tiny Life Temper Tantrums There are a number of reasons your toddler will throw a tantrum. If he is tired, due for a nap or hungry it might not be the best time to take him shopping. Or if he has been over stimulated and is battling to integrate all that is happening around him, he is more likely to throw a tantrum. Early signs of a tantrum can include: Nose picking, fidgeting, whining, shielding his eyes with his hands, yawning, sneezing or demanding a bottle. If ignored it won’t be long before he throws himself on the floor for all to admire. When you see the signs take him to a quiet place. Let him sleep, feed him or just give him time to get away from all the noise and bustle. As he gets older he is more likely to throw a tantrum if he can’t get his own way. Tackling tantrums can be tricky but not impossible. Bear in mind that you should rather comfort a sick child than discipline him, or if he is frustrated at not being able to build the tower help him with the task. By using the options of diverting attention, ignoring and time out you will conquer all other tantrums. Smoke a mental joint, find your happy place but don’t give in or “applaud” in any way. The less attention the performance gets, the easier it is to cope with. If you keep giving rave reviews in the form of your own performance to the tantrum, the show will go on. Just bear in mind that they don’t fall on the floor in a tantrum when they are 18, so there is hope! Source: Liz Victor, TOPTOTS, liz@toptots.co.za, 082 876 7791, www.toptots.co.za.

Tiny Life The Relationship between Tummy Lying and Hand Development At Moms and Babes, babies are encouraged to spend time playing on their tummies. You probably know and understand how important this position is for developing good head and neck control, a balance between muscles in the back and the chest and also for building strength in the shoulders. What you probably don’t know is how important tummy lying is for the development of the hand, for fine-motor skills.

At six months, baby starts to push up on straight arms. This position stretches the muscles in the fingers and the hand is therefore open. As baby reaches forward, the sides (the muscles of the palm) are activated, and this is how the arches of the hand are developed. All the weight bearing your baby does in crawling also strengthens muscles in the palm and fingers and continues to shape the hand for grasp. The earlier you put your baby on her tummy, the better!

Domestic and child minder placements and training courses

When your newborn baby is placed on her tummy, her hands are tightly closed. She lies curled up with her bottom in the air. As a result, much of her weight is displaced forward onto her face and hands. This pressure onto the hands helps them to open. At around three to four months your baby starts to push up onto her forearms. She takes most weight on her forearms and thumb side of the hand. This frees the fingers on the other side of the hand. Your baby is then able to start scratching at the surface and can grasp toys with this side of the hand.

Tiny Life Low Milk Supply and PCOS

MURALS

Some mothers who struggle with low or no breast-milk supply may have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) - although a third of PCOS sufferers struggle with oversupply! Most of the time when mothers have low milk supply, it is due to various factors such as baby not suckling efficiently, scheduled feedings, topping up with formula without expressing, mother not eating/drinking enough etc. But we are seeing an increase in women with PCOS, which is thought to be diet and lifestyle related, and which can affect breastfeeding since it affects the hormonal system. In a study done by Lisa Marasco (MA, IBCLC), half of the women with lactation failure suffered from obesity and 67% from infertility. Both are side effects of PCOS. Many doctors, including paediatricians, do not know much about breastfeeding or PCOS and can unintentionally give mothers wrong advice that can also contribute to low milk supply. So choose wisely. After baby’s birth, if the milk came in, PCOS may be due to a secondary issue. If the milk didn’t come in at all, it’s probably a primary issue. For the best possible outcome, start working on the problem immediately, before or during pregnancy. PCOS can cause too little breast tissue to grow to fully support breastfeeding if nothing is done. You should see breast growth and “veining” on the breast during pregnancy. Ask your doctor about Metformin, Fenugreek or Goat’s Rue, which may help. Even if you are not producing enough breast milk, some breast milk is better than nothing at all, so don’t give up. There are ways to supplement your baby by still feeding directly from the breast while working on supply issues. Source: Yulanda Ridge, Certified Lactation Consultant, 082 725 5043, 033 – 396 1733.

Tiny Life Is Green Your Baby’s Colour? Nothing is quite so motivating as being responsible for a new being. Having a baby is the moment when many people move from one end of the green spectrum to the other. Educated consumers are demanding a more eco-conscious lifestyle, from the foods we eat, to the clothes we wear, and now even the products that are used on our skin. The latter includes baby care products.

So challenging, and so fun! This is a great toy. It’s a very challenging labyrinth which will take you hours to master, but the challenge is so much fun, you’ll just keep going at it.

Many parents are simply unaware of the fact that products marked “baby”, “mild”, “delicate” and “hypoallergenic” are far from being pure. Many children suffer from a wide range of skin conditions and allergies. Most parents just accept it, but many of these unpleasant and often painful conditions are caused by chemicals and toxins that are used every day in our homes. Our bodies absorb whatever we put on or in them, so keep your baby’s skin soft and healthy by using natural, organic and fragrance-free products whenever possible.

When looking for organic baby products look for those that do not contain any materials which are artificial or synthetic and that contain potentially damaging surfactants and chemicals. Products should come from natural sources like animal and plant oils. Organic products are proven safe and effective for babies’ skins from head to toe. Beauty by Nature offers products that will help you on the road to “greening your baby”. These include Enchantrix Baby Wash (gently washes grubby bits), Enchantrix Baby Lotion (light moisturising lotion) and Enchantrix Baby Bum Balm (rich in cold compressed oils).

Young Life Nourish Your Child’s Concentration and Thinking Skills Your brain is largely made up of water, essential fatty acids and proteins. Carbohydrates, which get broken down becoming simple sugar (glucose), are the brain’s main source of fuel. To keep it functioning optimally your child’s brain requires water regularly, it needs to be kept hydrated. Encourage your child to drink enough water in smaller amounts throughout the day. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are important for the proper development and working of the brain. Increase the frequency of meals high in Omega 3 such as oily fish, eggs, flax or canola oil and walnuts. Also limit trans fatty acid intake as this can hinder the effect of omega 3 in the brain. Supplementing with omegas is also a good option. For children who present with poor focus a dosage of at least 1000mg of DHA is necessary for an effective result. Protein is required for the brain to grown. As it is a complex food, the body takes a while to break it down which means that a steady supply of fuel/energy is being provided for thinking, problem solving, planning, organising and paying attention. The brain is very sensitive to changes in blood sugar levels. High G.I. foods result in high levels of blood glucose which drop very quickly. Low G.I. foods result in a steady release of glucose so the brain is kept going with a constant and stable supply of fuel. Make food and drink fun for your child. Get them involved in the preparation such as making fruit lollies, crushed ice, chopping veggies etc. This is good for their motor skills, planning and execution skills, focus and sense of mastery. Young Life Hello Beesting! Beesting the Jackie (short for Jack Russell), lives with his owners, Lolla and Losh, on a big farm near a desert. A desert is a place where hardly any rain falls but where at night the stars shine against the sky just like a blanket covered in magical glitter dust. Lolla and Losh love Beesting to bits, and everywhere they go, Beesting goes too. Even up high in the sky in their hot air balloon. Together they have many exciting adventures but, first, I’m sure you are wondering how Beesting got his name.

When Beesting was still a tiny puppy he was very playful and mischievous, just like all puppies usually are. It was then that Roxie the bee stung Beesting on his nose. Beesting was trying to play with Roxie when she was circling a flower, gathering pollen to make sweet honey. Whrrrrrr... her little wings flapped, much too fast for our eyes to see. Roxie got a fright and that’s why she stung him.

We offer an extensive range of quality educational toys and games to pre-primary and primary schools.

“Oh, Beesting,” Roxie buzzzzed with an irritated little face and with her little eyebrows all curved up filled with yellow pollen, “now look what you have done! You gave me such a BIG fright that I had to sting you. I am soooo, so sorry, but please try not to get up to mischief when some of us are trying to work.” And with that Roxie the bee flapped her little bee wings and flew off to the Rosemary bush on the other side of the garden to collect more pollen.

Educated Life Sun Protection In an era in which children do fewer outdoor activities than before and in which an excessive emphasis is placed on having that glamorous, magazine-like tan in order to look good, we often forget just how harmful the effects of the sun, especially on the skin of a young child, can be. These effects can be extremely dangerous, although often only suffered later on in life, and so it is a parent’s responsibility to teach their children from a very young age about the dangers of the sun and how to avoid potential sun-related problems. Children’s skin is more sensitive than adults’ and therefore more vulnerable to the elements. Constant sunburn and overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation, especially during a child’s teenage years, can cause significant damage to skin and vastly increases the chances of suffering from skin cancer later on in life. But the skin isn’t the only body part which can be damaged by the sun. Eyes are extremely vulnerable too. Too much unfiltered sunlight can cause permanent damage to the eye’s lens and even the retina. Simple measures such as not staying in the sun for prolonged periods of time and the use of sunblock, appropriate clothing and UV-protecting eyewear can all help reduce the sun’s effect on our body.

Nox Designs even do stickers to stick onto your little sweetheart’s shoes to try and avoid a one foot pair. Ever since I was a wee lass I have had a great passion for stationery, and stickers in particular. Hours were spent sorting and meticulously placing my stickers into albums. BLOOMING BOTANY

BAR ONE HOT BAKED CHOCOLATE PUDDING

Science at work

• 3 eggs • 1 cup strong coffee • 1 cup oil • 1 box chocolate cake mix • 2 large Bar Ones

Use What?

• 1 stocking leg per child • Lawn seeds • Potting soil • Rubber bands • 1 pair of googly eyes per child • Pieces of felt material to make a mouth • Glue

Heat oven to 180oc. Grease 6 tin mugs. Beat 3 eggs and add oil, beat and then add coffee. Mix well. Add cake mix and incorporate the two mixes. Divide into the six cups. Sprinkle sliced bar ones on top of chocolate mix. Bake for 30 minutes.

Do What?

When the puddings are ready, take out of oven and pour over chocolate sauce.

• Pour a few seeds into the stocking tube and spread them evenly. • Add a cup of potting soil into the stocking tube and pack it tightly. • Tie the open end of the tube with a rubber band. • Turn grass head over so rest of stocking tube is hanging down. • Use rubber bands to mould ears and a nose. • Use felt material to cut out a mouth and glue this with the googly eyes onto the grass head. • Explain to children that once they get home they need to stand their grass heads in a cup with some water remembering to leave the empty part of the stocking tube in the water They can keep their grass heads on their kitchen window sills and watch as it begins to grow hair (grass). • Don’t forget to give the grass heads a haircut now and then!

1 cup boiling water 2 tablespoons cocoa 4 tablespoons sugar Serve with oodles of cream. Recipe courtesy of Tasha’s Fantastic Fudge, www.tashas-fudge.co.za

Relaxed Life Maureen Turns 100 in February 2012! Maureen, a Class 3BR steam train, belonging to Umgeni Steam Railway celebrates her 100th birthday this February. Unlike the Titanic, which would also have turned 100 this year, Maureen is still going strong and is used to transport passengers on the well-known monthly Inchanga Choo Choo. She will receive a commemorative plaque for her service. Maureen was built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, Scotland, and shipped to South Africa where she began work in January 1912. Maureen worked for S.A. Railways transporting passengers and coal, and did shunting duties and mine work in the Transvaal and Natal. In early 1992 she was donated to Umgeni Steam Railway who restored her back to working order. Since 1998 she was used to haul trains between Kloof and Inchanga (a duty for which she was specifically designed). She has a particularly difficult task on this windy stretch of railway line and is fondly called “The Mountain Queen” by Simon Anderson of Umgeni Steam Railway for her ability to successfully negotiate the tough gradients to, and from, Inchanga on the Old Main Line.

The End of the Acronym: Plain Language Forces Changes ATM, EFT, SME, GST are acronyms used by banks to cover up what looks like stealing. IUV, IV, ECG are words used by doctors to justify fees that are sometimes triple medical aids’ rates. The more acronyms used in one sentence the more expensive the doctor will be. SARS? Need I say more?

Jack and Jill

Starts 3 Feb

Plain language has saved us all. Gone are the days of serrated words. Gone is the incomprehensible grouping of consonants. Yes, gone are the letters on your tombstone. We like vowels. We like consonants. We like it when they make words. Whole words. RE: HCM AGM RSVP ASAP NB is not a sentence. It is what happens when your child plays office and types imaginary letters on your computer. Yet it says the following: Regarding: Human capital management annual general meeting reply required as soon as possible. It is important.

Starts 10 Feb

So how do you use an acronym? Properly of course. The first time the abbreviation is used its meaning should be written out in full: RIP (Rest in Peace), EFT (Electronic Financial Transaction), and only after that can it be used as a standalone word. Try talking the way you type. It sounds as if you are singing the alphabet song. Rather type the way you talk, that is the first step to writing in plain language. After all, you don’t invite your BFF for a BLT at KFC do you? No you don’t.

Mothers Who Care was started in 1987 in Canada, reaching South Africa in 1990. Currently, 300 schools across S.A. are part of the programme. The aim of Mothers Who Care is to “build a wall of prayer in and for our schools,” said National Co-ordinator, Rashieda Naidoo. “The ministry encourages the support of the teachers and administration of the school, and ultimately aims to bless the children.” After contacting their relevant Mothers Who Care co-ordinator, mums interested in starting a group in their own child’s school will be given a starter kit consisting of information on how to approach a school, how to start a group, how to conduct a prayer meeting and what to pray for. HOLIDAY ACCOMMODATION “The primary starting point when starting a group,” explained Rashieda, “is to get permission from the principal.” Thereafter a prayer box can be placed in the school and children encouraged to place written prayer requests in the box. Volunteer mums (and dads, grannies etc.) who gather weekly (at a time their group chooses) will then pray for these requests. More than praying for the children, volunteers develop a caring relationship with the children and teachers. “The greatest thing we can do for our nation’s children,” said Rashieda, “is to pray for them. Just one hour a week will make a big difference.” Prayer can also help change the tide of a changing and difficult society, believes Rashieda.

Relaxed Life Gwahumbe Game Reserve Spa Nickie Karshagen and her husband, Morné, recently stayed at Gwahumbe Game and Spa, situated in midEston. Morné had booked the couple in on the pamper package for the weekend to celebrate their wedding anniversary. “The accommodation at Gwahumbe is beautiful,” said Nickie. “The rooms were simple and comfortable with a little deck attached that you can sit on and have amazing views of the valley. Once we had checked in, we were able to choose our dinner menu for our private dinner at the spa and were shown the wine cellar where we could choose our wine. Once we were ready, we were taken down to the spa, and shown to a room that had the Hydro Bath in it. Our table for two was set so beautifully. Dinner was kept warm in the warming drawer. Dessert was a chocolate fondue to be enjoyed in the Hydro Bath. Saturday morning saw us getting up fairly early to enjoy a scrumptious buffet breakfast before heading off on our mountain bikes to have a scenic ride through the reserve. Saturday afternoon found us going on a game drive. We were the only couple on the drive so we got the undivided attention of our guide. He showed us various footprints and knew where most of the animals would be. We found ourselves within metres of the giraffes, rhino, various buck and wildebeest. What an experience.” “I highly recommend a visit there,” ended Nickie. “The resort is child-friendly and caters for day visitors as well.” Contact Gwahumbe on 031 – 781 1082 or visit www.gwahumbe.co.za.
