Bata Gives You the Boot This Winter

WE SHIP COUNTRYWIDE

Cowey Park, Shop 6A, Ground Floor 91 - 123 Problem Mkhize (Cowey) Road Essenwood. Tel: 031 207 3710

The long hot summer is gradually drawing to a close and cooler temperatures mean re-organising our wardrobes for winter. With ever-changing fashion trends, what are the best ways to co-ordinate boots with our outfits? • To make legs look longer make sure the jeans, leggings or trousers are the same colour as the boots. Choose a higher heel to give an illusion of a leaner leg. • Leather and lace is a stunning way to add a Bohemian touch to an outfit. Pair a lacy or floaty dress or skirt with ankle-hugging boots – which says ‘edgy-meets-elegant’. • The hems of a wider skirt or dress should fall just over the top of the boot; allow a few centimetres between the hem and boot if wearing a more fitted outfit. • If you’re a fan of baggy-cut jeans, roll up the cuff to just above a pair of high-heeled ankle boots to show them off. The extra height will add a hint of femininity to the tomboy look. • Petite girls should opt for mid-calf booties to create the illusion of a longer leg. These boots also work well with a longer skirt. • Ripped, torn, distressed clothing – this is the latest trend in fashion. Up-mode a tired pair of skinny, boyfriend or straight jeans by ripping up the hems and cropping them so the edge sits a few centimetres above the ankle boots. Leave the jeans unhemmed for an intentionally-distressed finish and be on-point in the fashion stakes this season.

The BATA boot collection has something for everyone and prices range between R399.90 and R799.90. Visit www.bata.com or call 031 - 701 4951 for more information.

Editor’s Life

A Month of Celebrations June is a very special month in our home, not only is it Father’s Day, it is my hubby’s birthday, my son will turn 15, it is my nephew’s birthday, my Godson’s birthday plus it’s my late Father’s birthday too! So a month of celebrations, happy memories and special times for the Arthurs this month. Can you believe that the school holidays will soon be upon us, which will be most welcome in our house after all the stress over the last month in the lead up to the school exams! My mum has been poorly in the UK recently so I am hoping to pop over and visit her, which will be lovely as I haven’t seen her since October. I’m sure I will also get to see my sisters, brother, nephews, nieces, Godsons and all my wonderful friends back in the land of Blighty!

Meet the Cover Star

Meet the Cover Star

Our cover star is nine month old Nkanyiso Jali from Durban. He has a brother, Thobani (11) and his parents are Philisiwe and Themba. Dad Themba works at Metier Mixed Concrete and mom Philisiwe works for Dis-Chem. Little Nkanyiso is a happy child and full of mischief… a typical nine month old. His mom says he’s naughty and loves playing and making a mess, which mom must clean up! “I must clean all the time because he makes a mess in the house, and he loves pulling my hair,” laughs Philisiwe. He also enjoys watching TV and loves to sleep late in the mornings. Thobani is the first born and he is a wonderful big brother. He is a very helpful and respectful child. He loves to swim and also loves to sing. When he’s home he also loves making his mom tea when she comes home from a hard day’s work. He loves helping his mom with his little brother. As a family they go to movies and play games that include the whole family – they have loads of fun together! Ahead of Father’s Day, dad

Themba has this to say: “Being a dad is a big responsibility because you have to take care of your family and protect them at all times. I wouldn’t change that for anything!” “Being a mom is the best thing in the world - to have someone depend on me and for me to take care of them is the most joyful thing, and to feel the unconditional love from them is amazing,” concludes Philisiwe. Father’s Day Gift Ideas A gift for your father made by you is even more special if you’ve made it yourself. Here are some great home-made gift ideas that kids can make for Dad – with a bit of help from Mom!

DIY Watercolour Mug You will need a white ceramic mug, old or disposable bowl/container and nail polish. Fill the bowl with warm water. Add a drop of nail polish to the water and let it spread out. You can also use a skewer to swirl the colour around a bit to give it the effect you’d like. Dip your mug in the water. You can use nail polish remover to remove any excess nail polish on the bottom and inside of the mug or sections that got messed up. Carefully pat mug dry with paper towel. You can repeat with additional colours if you want. Once you’ve achieved the look you want, let it sit for at least two hours. Source: www.poppytalk.com.

Marbled Air Plant Holder You will need two different coloured oven-bake clays, a knife and a clay carving tool. Start by cutting each colour of clay into three separate pieces. Work the clay in your hands until it is soft and pliable. Combine two pieces together. Continue combining the clay until you have added all your pieces. Once you have added all the clay, begin to pull apart and layer. Mix the clay together without fully combining the clay. Roll the clay into a ball and decide what kind of shape you want for your planter. Shape the clay into the shape you have chosen for your planter. Use the tools to do finishing touches. Bake your clay following the instructions on the packaging. Source: www.whydontyoumakeme.com.

Engraved Wood Mousepad You will need a wood circle, wood stain, foam brush and a wood burning tool. Write your message onto the mousepad – e.g. Best Dad Ever – using freehand or a stencil. Trace over with the wood burning tool. Stain the wood and let dry according to instructions. Source: www.abubblylife.com. www.mumsmail.com

The Joys of Fatherhood For me, being a father is the greatest joy. It’s a joy because I have witnessed the birth of my baby girl, seen her take her first steps and heard her say “Dad” for the first time. I’ve been on the receiving end of thousands of hugs and kisses, thrown my little girl high in the sky, and heard her scream with excitement as she fell back into my arms again. I’ve learnt all the words to her favourite songs and see her excitement when she grabs our hands to get up and dance with her.

Although at times it can feel as if you have been thrown into the middle of a tornado, your life really does change, but in the most beautiful way. You wake up before the sun rises and realise how you have never experienced a cup of coffee on the patio, in the crisp morning air. You realise that one of the most astonishing things in life, is life itself, and watching your baby sleep leaves you in complete awe. Afternoon naps have upped their ranking in your weekend schedule and now most arrangements are planned around that heavenly 2pm snooze. A family walk along I’m watching her grow and learn what it the beach on a Sunday takes preference as means to be a person in this big world and you and your wife soak in the reality of what every day she reminds me to see the world the word ‘family’ really means. with joy and wonderment. Love the Babies

The Love the Babies Project is the project that led to the formation of the Robin Hood Foundation by local businesswoman Cindy Norcott 12 years ago. Through this project, needy mums from AIDS affected communities are given a ‘Love the Babies’ Bag for the first year of their new baby’s life. Essentially a baby shower in a bag, the ‘Love the Babies’ Bags are always so well-received by the needy mums who they donate to. Included in these bags are towelling nappies, disposable nappies, second hand and new baby clothes, booties, hats, bibs, blankets, towels, toys and teddies. If they receive sufficient donations, special items are occasionally included, such as aqueous cream, baby shampoo or powder.

centres and to concerned individuals. The Love the Babies Project aims to help over 100 new mums every six to eight weeks and in order to do this, they need a continuous supply of baby items. They are appealing for donations of the following preloved items in excellent condition: towelling nappies, vests, newborn and baby outfits (up to 12 months), blankets, soft toys, bibs, hats, toiletries, jerseys, and booties. Victoria Arthur, editor of Mum’s Mail, was delighted to hand over a ‘Love the Babies’ bag recently.

To date, more than 16 000 ‘Love the Babies’ Bags have been handed out in the greater Durban area, at St Mary’s Hospital, King Edward Hospital, Addington Hospital, Prince Myshiyeni Memorial and Inchanga Clinic, as well as at various churches, pregnancy crisis

imagine a world where meals just happen!

Market serves simple quality cuisine using locally and/or organic sourced ingredients in a professional, unique, and caring environment. Market is also known for its selection of award-winning South African wines, freshly squeezed fruit juices and coffee. The fine dining dinner food specials change regularly and provide the perfect catalyst for any occasion, whether it’s your first date or a birthday celebration. The courtyard has a central fountain surrounded by a ring of Leopard trees, which provide all year mottled shade and a peaceful atmosphere. The outdoor furniture and tables are modelled around 18th century French garden furniture, adding to Market’s allure. The restaurant’s indoor section is more modern minimalist while still providing the feeling of dining somewhere in Europe. Market is always available for big parties, private functions or weddings. Andrew and I visited this amazing place recently and had a very special dinner. It was just the two of us so we made it our date night and we had a truly wonderful evening. The setting was romantic with the fairy lights and the candles and the food was delicious. I had a scrummy salmon dish for my main, with a cauliflower mash, as I’m eating very low carb these days, and Andrew enjoyed the Karoo lamb rack. The food and service was exceptional and I highly recommend that you visit this place for a special occasion or just because!

Top Tips for New Puppy or Kitten Owners

24 HR EMERGENCY CARE

We all know the excitement of getting a new puppy or kitten! There are few things that bring as much joy as watching a new pet playfully explore their new environment with seemingly endless energy. At the same time new pets can bring heartache and hardship if we are not adequately prepared.

031 562 1037 32 Burne Cres. 084 562 1037 Glenashley www.ashburnevet.co.za

Here are five top tips for any new pet owner: Vaccinations Make sure that your new puppy or kitten receives all the necessary vaccinations including booster vaccines. These are vital to prevent a variety of potentially fatal diseases. Deworming Worms can cause severe disease in young animals. Puppies and kittens should be dewormed every two weeks from two weeks old until weaned from mom, and then at every vaccination for the initial puppy/kitten vaccinations and then every three months thereafter. Diet Make sure you feed your new pet a good quality diet. This is important for their growth and development. Ask the staff at your vet for advice on which food to feed and how much to feed. Socialisation and training If at all possible take your new puppy to a socialisation class. This is a great way to get your pup used to other dogs and new environments. And it’s also an excellent way to meet other pet owners. Microchipping Make sure your new puppy or kitten gets microchipped. These are tiny identification chips that are painlessly inserted under the skin of your pet and are vitally important in finding the owners if your pet ever gets lost or runs away. Hopefully these tips will lead to many happy days with your new puppy or kitten. For more advice contact Ashburne Veterinary Clinic, 031 - 562 1037. www.mumsmail.com

AquaMAG

AquaMAG is a multi-mineral concentrate that contains mainly magnesium and calcium, both minerals essential for over 350 enzymatic and metabolic functions in the body; brain, nervous system, muscle function, digestion and bone health.

NO X-RAY “MAMMOGRAM”

Ballito, Durban North, Westville, Howick, PMB, JHB & Cape Town

Below is a testimonial from an AquaMAG customer: “I’ve had intense behavioral problems with my son for the last two years (he’s now eight). Over the last year, it’s only intensified, to a point that I was considering boarding school, because he was out of control, and I physically couldn’t handle him anymore. In February I saw your ad in a kids’ magazine, and researched more on the importance of magnesium. I decided to give it a try, as I was interested in the effects it could have on improving anxiety and frustration. Fast forward two weeks - I have a new child! I’m speechless at his transformation! He is such a pleasure to be around again (apart from the expected eight-year-old gripes). Outbursts and unreasonable behaviour are almost zero! He’s happy, tolerant and so much calmer. His words to me: “I feel less angry, and feel like I can control myself.” In addition to AquaMAG, he takes Mentat and Krill Oil Omegas. However, I’m confident to say, that AquaMAG has been the defining supplement. He was on the two other supplements for a period of time, before introducing AquaMAG, and I didn’t notice a drastic change. I noticed the almost immediate change after the introduction of AquaMAG. We now all take it - including my 17 month baby.” - Laona, Pietermaritzburg. Flavoured AquaMAG is available at Dis-Chem, pharmacies and health shops countrywide. Behaviours are messages – not diagnoses Distinguishing between ADHD and Anxiety Disorder requires a full evaluation by a professional. Parents need to understand that the diagnostic process can be complicated. While some children with ADHD may also have an anxiety disorder. The disorder might be so minimal that there are no symptoms. Taking a stimulant like Ritalin, however, may exacerbate a lowlevel condition. When this happens, it is important to deal with the anxiety disorder first. Once that is treated, it is generally safe to reintroduce the stimulant without causing a flare-up of anxiety. Case 1: ADHD with anxiety secondary to frustrations, failures, and negative feedback experiences: Your doctor will treat the ADHD while working to address the social, emotional, and family problems. Case2: ADHD and an Anxiety Disorder: Both disorders need to be treated to maximize success.

Don’t Give Up

I go to an all ladies gym and on the wall is a ‘my changes’ board – it has different statements and members are encouraged to place a sticker next to the statement that most pertains to them, after every workout. I noticed that the top four statements with the most stickers by far are: “My body is firmer”, “I feel happier”, “I really want to do more things and feel less lazy” and “I have a higher self-esteem”. Do you notice that these statements are all about FEELING better and not LOOKING better? It took me a long time to realise that exercising and eating well should be done for ME and it’s all about how I feel in myself, and not about how I look to others. For the first time in my life I am exercising to get strong and fit, and not to look good. I’m eating well to feel healthy and young, and not to get thin. I’m not focusing on what others think of me, but rather on how I feel. And it’s great! I’m not focusing on weight loss anymore. I know that will come with time. And if it doesn’t, that’s okay. I understand that a woman’s body sometimes changes forever after carrying and birthing children, and once you pass a certain age! Right now the most important thing is that I am getting stronger and fitter and healthier each day!

E N T E R TA I N I N G IS EFFORTLESS! HERE’S HOW

Buy a whole frozen gâteaux, place it in your freezer before it defrosts and store for up to 12 months. •

Defrost in the refrigerator overnight in original packaging, or at room temperature out of packaging for ±90 minutes, and serve. •

Alternatively cut individual slices, keep the remainder of the gâteaux in the freezer and defrost just the slices you wish to serve. •

Always use a long, sharp knife, dipping in very hot water before each stroke. •

Once defrosted don’t re-freeze, but keep the remainder in the refrigerator, for up to 3 days… If you can last that long! •

Once the seal is broken, always lift the box by the base and not the lid.

Men’s Health Month

41 Adelaide Tambo Dr. Durban North

The purpose of Men’s Health Month in June is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. It is about the health risks men may face, how to prevent them, what symptoms to look out for, and where to get medical assistance. This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. The response has been overwhelming with thousands of awareness activities around the globe. Visit www. menshealthmonth.org for more information. Health Tips for Men • Eliminate “white foods” from your diet. White flour, white sugar and other processed foods are not only devoid of vitamins and minerals, but they’ve also been stripped of their natural fibre. • Stay away from dangerous trans fats. While it’s important to reduce your overall fat intake, it’s even more important to watch the types of fat you eat. • Take a potent daily multivitamin and mineral supplement. • Include weight training in your exercise routine. Aerobic exercise is great for cardiovascular conditioning, but it’s vastly inferior to weight training in attacking the “flab factor”. • Maintain your optimal weight. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for yourself. • Drink alcohol only in moderation. Repeated studies have shown that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol (all kinds) protects not only against heart disease, but also lowers risk of death from all causes. Remember that moderation is key. • Reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Experts estimate that 80 per cent of all cancers can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices.

Hair Removal Options Laser hair removal or IPL (Prowave) can get rid of your unsightly body or facial hair which means no more daily shaving or monthly waxing and best of all, no more stubble, rashes or ingrown hairs. What are the options for permanent hair reduction and/or removal? At Body Renewal there are various excellent hair removal machines available to suit patients’ individual needs: • The Cutera Nd:YAG is a diverse hair removal laser for all skin types and recommended for the treatment (and removal) of ingrown hair. • The Cutera ProWave™ is a fourth generation IPL device which is more effective in lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I-IV). • The Lightsheer® is a diode laser capable of treating all skin types and hair colours, excluding white or grey hair. How do permanent hair removal treatments work? A laser or IPL device emits light energy that travels through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. The energy from the chosen device is converted to heat which damages the hair follicle, impairing its ability to grow hair. For the treatment to yield good results, the hair being treated must be darker than the skin. Hair lighter in colour (grey, red or white hair) has less pigment than darker hair and therefore doesn’t absorb as much of the energy emitted from the device. Body Renewal can treat an array of patients through its variety of equipment and hair removal technologies. To find out more visit www.bodyrenewal.co.za or contact one of the Body Renewal branches in Durban on 0861 SKIN SA.

TATTOO REMOVAL

No Scarring

Beta hydroxy acid works mainly as an exfoliant, as it helps to unplug clogged pores, allowing the dead skin cells to slough off, making room for regrowth of new skin. This acid is lipid (oil) soluble which means that it is able to penetrate deeper into a sebum containing pore to exfoliate the dead skin cell build up from inside out and help to neutralise bacteria found within the pore. BHAs also appears to be less irritating to the skin compared to alpha hydroxy acid as it is derived from aspirin which has antiinflammatory properties.

Are You Teaching Your Kids Bad Money Habits? When it comes to finances, the habits that children learn will most probably follow them through to adulthood. Are you unintentionally teaching your kids bad money habits by making the following common mistakes?

own money you will be empowering them to make important financial decisions,” adds Sibiya. “Set up a bank account and, under your watchful eye, let them make their own transactions such as airtime purchases or swipes.”

Creating a money shield “By shielding your child from how finances work, you are unintentionally putting them on the back foot,” says Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education at FNB. “Introduce them to simple money concepts as soon as you can.” If they are fairly young you can get your child to pay for something in the queue and also help them identify the difference between a want and a need. Older children may even have the ability to grasp more complex concepts such as compound interest or credit.

Not allowing them to make their own purchases It is easy to simply buy something for your child outright, or tell them you can’t afford it and move on if you are in the store. But, stopping and making your child think carefully about their purchase will put them in good stead for the future. They will have to consider how much money they have put away and whether the cost of the item is worth it.

Not giving them control “By giving your child some measure of control over their

Accelerated Education Enterprises

Facing the Education Crisis in Africa With an unwavering commitment to seeing an educated Africa where everyone can reach their full potential, Accelerated Education Enterprises (AEE) offers a compelling solution to the education crisis in South Africa. It is not an overstatement to say that South African education is in crisis. The crisis is evident in the statistics that show declining results, insurmountable learning deficits and alarming dropout rates (Viljoen, 2015). Is there any good news? At Accelerated Education Enterprises they say, “Absolutely YES! There is a solution.” AEE develops, distributes and implements a system of education that is supported by extensive, sound research and has a proven track record. However, embracing the system requires advancement and change. This can be challenging for individuals and a nation stuck in a cycle of repetition. We have to ask ourselves, “Do we have a choice?” In the words of Elon Musk, “Some people don’t like

change but you need to embrace change if the alternative is disaster.” If we do not find a way to streamline, improve and advance education in South Africa and developing countries, we will continue on this disastrous path. “Education needs a new form of delivery that is appropriate for each individual.” Fred Keller. Personal System of Instruction (PSI), also known as the Keller Plan, was first described by Fred Keller in ‘Good-bye Teacher’, an article published in the Journal of Applied Behaviour Analysis in 1968. The system is composed of small, self-paced, modularised units of instruction where study guides direct learners through the modules. Unit tests are given on each module and learners must show mastery by scoring at least 90% before they can continue on the programme. Source: www.aeegroup.co.za. The Link Between Child Development and Free-Play

PRE-SCHOOL AND BABY CARE

WISHING ALL DADS AN AWESOME FATHER’S DAY!

As technology has become our children’s main source of entertainment, the bigger questions stands - “why has the digital age taken over the learning development of our children?” It is important for parents to bear in mind that the brain of a child develops rapidly before the age of three. This is a crucial time in your toddler’s life, when he/she begins forming speech and language abilities through human communication and interaction. Regardless of age, play is the universal language amongst children. Through play, your kids learn to use all their senses by touching, tasting, smelling, hearing and imitating actions they see from others. Free-play is also referred to as “unstructured play” where children take the initiative to create stories around set activities without the guidance from a parent or adult close by. A study conducted by an Australian National University found that allowing kids to use their imaginations when playing was highly beneficial to language development. Outdoor play is as important as imaginative play, as your child strengthens their muscles and mobility, whether it is through jumping off a rock or learning to navigate across the monkey bars. By simply taking your kids outdoors or to a playpark, you are able to watch their confidence grow as they learn to take risks and explore the world around them. This is a call to all parents to ensure that your children receive the best learning experience with each school activity and at home. By placing a focus on learning and free-play instead of technology, you instil confidence, trust and self-assurance in your child.

Our children are growing up in a different world to the one where we, their parents, spent our formative years. Equipping our children to navigate through their world is one of the best gifts we can give them, and I believe that there are four key tools that will help them identify their best path, and stick to it, no matter what distractions they encounter: confidence, personal resilience, emotional intelligence and self-worth.

Confidence Confidence comes from young people being able to ask themselves questions, identify answers, and having the strength of character to act on those answers. This gives them the tools they need to identify the tasks, opportunities and obstacles ahead of them, and to plan a strategy to address them all. Resilience Resilience in children comes from them having confidence in themselves and in their personal space with their parents and families. They’re confident that the future will be fine, and that their family institution provides a backstop for all their decisions. Emotional intelligence Emotional intelligence is being secure in the knowledge of who/whom you are and what you stand for – and it’s not just children and teenagers that need to learn this skill! Our children have strong opinions that they need the space to vent – and should know how to do it with respect. Self-worth Self-worth is a state of mind, and not a competency. It includes being comfortable with what you look like and who you are, and it forms the basis of learning responsibility at every level. By Marlinie Ramsamy, CEO of FranklinCovey South Africa. 55

Clonard Education

Clonard Education: More than Just a Box of Books!

In recent years there has been a marked increase in the number of parents choosing to homeschool their children. Parents want the best for their children, especially when it comes to education. Enjoy a Paper Bug Hunt This is the perfect bug hunt for people who are squeamish about bugs – and for bugs that are squeamish about people. In fact, it doesn’t really involve bugs at all – which is good, because they have very busy schedules.

FACTORY SHOP 80 Columbine Place unit 6 , Glen Anil 031 569 3470 www.thelittlecakecompany.co.za

Print or colour lots of pictures of different bugs and creepy crawlies. Make sure you keep a note of each one – or even better, another picture – to put on the collecting bags. Place the bugs around the garden (or ask an adult to do it, so you can take part in the hunt). It’s a nice idea to place the bugs near where you would expect to find them – purple flowers for butterflies, compost bins or soil for worms, fresh green leaves for caterpillars. Every person has a collecting bag listing all the bugs the have to find – or a picture of each especially for younger children). On the word ‘go’, everyone begins hunting for their bugs. The first person to collect one of each is declared the winner and is given some snails to eat. Sorry, I meant sweets. They are given some sweets to eat. (It’s an easy mistake to make).

Num Noms: Set to Take the Collectables Crown

• Party Shop • Helium Balloons • Speciality Cakes • Costumes • Baking Supplies • Wigs • Extensive Balloon Range • Lovely Wedding & Baby Shower Décor Products

Num Noms are little scented collectable toys that are made to look like food. Num Noms have that cute factor that both little girls and their moms love and, in terms of collectable toys which are all the rage at the moment, they are set to take the crown. So what are Num Noms? In a nutshell, Nums are adorable, scented, squishy characters and Noms are scented characters that do something special – either light up, work as a stamp or are filled with lip gloss. The Nums are the outer, soft, squishy characters, and the Noms are the inner, hard-shelled characters that are either motorised to scoot around, filled with flavoured lip gloss or act like ink stamps or erasers. You can nestle a Num inside a Nom for fun mix and match play, stack them high or race them against each other.

Make Your Own Fake Snot As disgusting as it might sound to some people, let’s make some fake snot! Snot actually serves an important purpose in our body so this experiment is not all about grossing out our friends, although that’s certainly part of the fun. What you’ll need: • Boiling water (be careful with this) • A cup • Gelatin • Corn syrup • A teaspoon • A fork

Instructions: Fill half a cup with boiling water. Add three teaspoons of gelatin to the boiling water. Let it soften before stirring with a fork. Add a quarter of a cup of corn syrup. Stir the mixture again with your fork and look at the long strands of gunk that have formed. As the mixture cools slowly add more water, small amounts at a time. What’s happening? Mucus is made mostly of sugars and protein. Although different than the ones found in the real thing, this is exactly what you used to make your fake snot. The long, fine strings you could see inside your fake snot when you moved it around are protein strands. These protein strands make snot sticky and capable of stretching.
