Editor’s Life With Valentine’s Day having been and gone and the Easter holidays just around the corner, our team have been frantically busy with the final preparations and countdown to our first big fundraising event of the year – the 5th Annual Mum’s Mail PMB Ladies Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund.

For inspirational gift ideas that you won’t find in the mall...

This popular and sought after event, by Durban and PMB ladies alike, will be held on 23 March 2018 at the Victoria Country Club, in Pietermaritzburg. This year’s theme is very exciting – we have chosen ‘Oriental’ and you can read more about it in this issue but you can also see some of our gorgeous pre-publicity photos that were taken in the stunning Japanese Gardens at the Makaranga Garden Lodge in Kloof. So it’s not long to go now and we are desperately appealing for more raffle prizes so that the ladies can purchase our famous ‘secret envelopes’ to raise much needed funds for The Sunflower Fund. We are also appealing for goodie bag prizes, financial sponsors, etc. If you can help in any way, be it small or large, please do get in touch with the fantastic Daniella at ‘daniella@mumsmail. com’ who will happily take your donations on behalf of The Sunflower Fund.

What is Fibre?

If you drive around Durban then you can’t help but notice that areas of roadside are being dug up all over the place with pink netting everywhere. This may have impacted your daily lives for a while, but what is going on? Well, you may be aware that a “fibre” network is being laid down over large areas of suburbia around Durban but, once the road works have finished and the dust has cleared, what does it mean to you? Mum’s Mail has looked at the whole “fibre” thing from the perspective of the home and family life and we have asked many experts in the field for their opinions. Over the next few issues we will try and provide some answers to your questions. The first question we asked is: what is “fibre” anyway? The answer to that question, in layman’s terms, is that “fibre” is another way of transmitting voice and data, in competition with copper wire (the old telephone cable system) and cellular transmission (the mobile phone network). “Fibre” is short for Fibre Optic Cable and Claire Williamson; FTTH Product Manager at Vox provided a good explanation of what that is. “It is made from plastic or glass cables which are the same diameter as a human hair, this allows for faster data transfer compared to the standard copper wires which are used in most South African homes.” So that’s why everywhere is being dug up, they need to lay a network of fibre cables before they can offer the service to consumers. The second, and perhaps biggest question is: why consider using “fibre”? The headline answer is that fibre is faster, as Orri Halabi from Easi Telecom explains: “With Data travelling at the speed of light rather than old technology travelling over copper cable, speeds of up to 10 times faster than older redundant systems are possible.” So the good news is this; if you need faster internet then “fibre” is a new option for you, if you’re lucky enough to live in an area where they have laid the cables. But there’s a lot more to it than that; is it cheaper? Is it more reliable? What are the things to look out for when buying a “fibre” service? We will be answering these and other key questions in next month’s issue. If you would like any questions answered please e-mail them to editor@mumsmail.com. www.mumsmail.com

Pet Life

Keeping your Pet Safe and Loved Whilst you are Away Whether you are going on holiday and can’t take your pet with you or just going to work and worry about your pet being on their own during the day, the good news is that there are a variety of pet-sitting services to consider. Hotels and ‘Homes’ Although the exact set-up and services offered by these hotels differ, generally speaking you can choose a private room for your pet and he or she will enjoy large play areas both inside and outside. There are also many passionate pet-lovers that offer a ‘home-away-fromhome’, where they will take your pet in to their own home to look after them.

Boarding kennels and catteries Boarding kennels and catteries can be a cost-effective option. They range massively in terms of size and environment, so it’s wise to get recommendations and to visit to ensure they are a good fit for your pet. In-house pet-sitting You may be happier knowing your pet is staying in their own home environment in familiar ‘territory’ with their home comforts, in which case a trusted pet-sitter or pet-sitting service is worth considering. This may be a less stressful experience for those pets who are a little anxious while their owners are away. Day-care options You can now send your pet to a day-care facility where they can socialise with other pets, go for walks and some even have structured playtime and nap time to ensure their well-being is taken care of while you’re at work. When choosing which options suit you and your pet, be sure to research more than one. Do some comparisons, get references and referrals and ask questions. Source: www.absolutepets.com. 15

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the bacon or the cherry tomato halves onto a baking tray (season the cherry tomatoes with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil). Bake until the bacon is crisp or the tomatoes have softened (approximately 15 min). Cut the tops off the buns and scoop out the bread from the centres to create ‘bread bowls’ and place onto a baking tray. Divide the bacon/tomatoes between the buns to form the bottom layer. Crack an egg into each and top with equal amounts of cheese. Season with salt, pepper and a dash of chopped, fresh parsley. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until the buns are golden brown and the eggs are cooked to your liking (place the lids in for the last 5 minutes to crisp up.)

Emergencies can occur at any time and in any situation. They may take the form of a person going into cardiac arrest, choking on something or suffering some sort of life-threatening injury. When this occurs, emergency personnel are not always in a position to access the patient timeously, often leading to the patient’s condition worsening. As ordinary individuals, we may be able to expedite such situations from worsening if we ourselves are skilled in immediate emergency techniques. This may involve knowing how to carry out high quality CPR or administering the correct form of first-aid treatment. The more knowledge you have and the more prepared you are, will increase the chances of the victim’s survival. For this reason, METS provides comprehensive and accredited training in first aid to families, companies and individuals.

(AHA) and the Resuscitation Council of South Africa (RCSA). The AHA is the world renowned leader in resuscitation science, education and training, who have developed international guidelines for Medical Emergencies.

METS delivers accredited courses designed by the American Heart Association

A Dermatologist Mother’s Story: My Journey with Eczema As a dermatologist and a mother, I felt like a complete failure. My little girl’s wellbeing and comfort was out of my control. Watching her suffer was unbearable, and yet I was the expert. I felt I had to do more than the treatments I gave out on a daily basis, so I introduced rules into our lives about diet and lifestyle to give myself the illusion of control. I imposed strict restrictions on sport in an attempt to protect my daughter from situations that would decrease her self-esteem and confidence. As moms we fear for our kids being bullied or ridiculed for their skin issues, so we try to shield them from the world when we should be empowering them to be tough and stand up for themselves.

important as is the avoidance of harsh skin products and skin irritants. Removing any food group from the diet where there is no food allergy present will not cure the condition. It will, however, further hamper the way the condition impacts the life of the patient. As a mother, this is a difficult reality to face, despite the evidence and the knowledge I was equipped with.

At this present time, there is no cure for eczema. The best way to manage the condition is with the help of a dermatologist. A regular and consistent routine does not need to be long or complicated, but it will help keep the condition in check. This does not mean bad bouts of inflammation and irritation won’t occur. A flare-up is absolutely not a reflection of how well a patient is cared for or how rigorous the routine is, flare-ups occur simply because it is the nature of the condition.

Eventually, I sent my daughter for a consult with a colleague who cut through the illusion. Losing control of the rules was difficult for me, but now we face her eczema daily with the reality of its challenge.

Wet wraps provide moisture to the skin during periods of flare-ups and topical cortisone creams can keep inflammation levels down. Sun protection is very

For two years I did not allow my daughter to eat ice cream. This rule didn’t just come from our struggle with eczema but from my need to be in control as a mother. I blamed it on the eczema but when she started questioning the reasoning, things spiraled out of control.

My consolation is my confidence in dermatologists and scientists worldwide finding a cure. For now, we just need to be patient. As painful as it is, as moms we need to support our kids in the reality of what they are facing, even if it means feeling like situations are beyond our control. Your Child’s Oral Health World Oral Health Day is celebrated globally every year on 20 March. Family Dental Care offers some advice on your little one’s first dentist visit, to ensure a positive experience.

your child form a trusting bond with the dentist. This in turn makes return visits to the dentist carefree for your child - and you. Reassure your child that is okay to share any fear they might have with their dentist. Also, remind your child that the dentist will explain everything carefully and that it is okay to ask any questions!

Your first visit to the dentist typically entails little treatment and is generally a short visit. This first vital experience and interaction with the dentist allows your child a chance to meet the dentist and get to know them in a welcoming and warm way. Sometimes dentists will ask you as the parent to join your child in the dental chair and possibly hold your child during examination. This allows your child to feel comfortable and safe and allows the dentist to best do their assessment. Source: Family Dental Care, A positive first visit to the dentist helps www.familydentalcare.co.za. Primary, or “baby” teeth not only help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in. Having a professional who is trained in the area of Paediatric Dentistry examine their mouth early will prevent problems down the road. It is recommended that you schedule your child to see a dentist after their first tooth shows or before their first birthday.

Why Can’t I Lose the Weight? Where the mind goes, the body follows. Weight loss is not just a physical endeavour. Did you know that emotional and mental issues affect the state of your body? You can force yourself to go on a diet or exercise regime for a while, but if you don’t change the beliefs that are holding you back, then weight loss will only be temporary and will stop you from moving forward and achieving your goals. As long as you consciously or unconsciously believe that it’s impossible for you to be in shape, your body and mind will do everything to sabotage your efforts and bring you back to the place where you believe you really deserve to be… you need to get to and eliminate the root cause of your weight problem, which is limiting beliefs.

you can’t lose weight. Maybe you believe that you can only lose so much weight, or you may believe that you can’t lose any at all. Either way, this belief hampers progress, so that it seems like a constant battle to keep going without results. Millions of people successfully lose weight and keep it off, and you can too.

World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed on 21 March. On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organise and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome, on an equal basis with other people, must be able to enjoy full and equal rights, both as children and adults. This includes the opportunity to participate fully in their communities. The reality for many is that prevailing negative attitudes result in low expectations, discrimination and exclusion, creating communities where children and adults with Down syndrome cannot integrate successfully with their peers. But where children with Down syndrome and other disabilities are given opportunities to participate, all children benefit from this and environments of

friendship, acceptance, respect for everyone and high expectations are created. Not only this, but these environments prepare all today’s children for life as tomorrow’s adults, enabling adults with Down syndrome to live, work and participate, with confidence and individual autonomy, fully included in society alongside their friends and peers. On World Down Syndrome Day join the organisers to encourage children and adults with Down syndrome to say “My Friends, My Community” and get the world talking about the benefits for everyone of inclusive environments. What is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition. It is universally present across racial, gender or socio-economic lines. Source: www.worlddownsyndromeday.org.

Beauty Resolutions to Make in 2018

If you’re like me, then you really need to make these beauty resolutions. I’m low maintenance and my skincare routine is very basic – in other words I’m lazy! I hate taking off my make-up and will buy the cheapest products I can find. So I found these cool tips from L’Oreal, and I’m going to try and put them all into action this year!

Remove makeup every night OK, so we know you’ve heard this before, but it bears repeating! Sleeping in your foundation, mascara, and eyeliner is not exactly the best idea for your skin. In fact, while you sleep, that remaining makeup can mix with the dirt and oil on the surface of your skin and this can lead to clogged pores, which can lead to breakouts and blackheads. Use an anti-aging moisturiser If you’ve considered putting together an anti-aging skincare routine but still haven’t yet, why not go for it this year? Add sugar scrubs and face masks to your skincare routine Your skin deserves a little pampering every now and then - and not just once every six months. That doesn’t mean you have to hit up the spa all the time; you can show your complexion some love right at home by using sugar scrubs and face masks a few times a week. Bust out of your hair colour comfort zone Envious of all the rainbow hair hues you see while scrolling through your social media feeds? Why not take a risk and paint your strands an eye-catching shade, too? Whether you love blue hair or pink hair or you prefer pastels over brights, a new hair

color could be the perfect way to be a little more adventurous in 2018. Rock a throwback shiny lip While matte and metallic lips were beloved in 2017, 2018 is forecasted to be the year of the shiny lip. You know the makeup look - it was popular in the ‘90s and early ‘00s. Always use a primer before makeup Have you ever wondered why your foundation doesn’t look as smooth as your favourite beauty bloggers’? Well, while they may have a different skin type than you, it could be that you’re forgetting a very important step of your makeup routine: primer. Layering on a glowing or matte primer can make all the difference in the world, as it can create a smooth base for your makeup application. Apply your foundation and concealer with a makeup blender Want to create a flawless-looking complexion? It’s all about how you apply your face makeup. Instead of dabbing on your foundation or concealer with your fingers, use a makeup blender instead. Become BFFs with sun protection Another piece of beauty advice that’s worth listening to is taking sun protection measures daily, no matter what time of year it is. Start by applying a moisturizer with SPF as directed. Remember to reapply at least every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating (so toss the bottle in your bag when you leave for the day!). Source: www.lorealparisusa.com.

DIY Remedies for Your Skin Problem #1: I have such dull skin and NO glow. Solution is oats: To have glowing skin, combine one tablespoon of finely ground oats with one tablespoon of plain yoghurt in a small bowl. Problem #2: I have dry skin. Solution is sugar and oil: Mix two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil with four tablespoons of granulated sugar to create a sticky scrub. Gently massage your face in a circular motion, avoiding the eye area. Then rinse the scrub with warm water. Continue with this process for weeks, or even months, to get awesome results.

Problem #3: Oh NO!! I am out of makeup remover - what can I do? Solution is avocado: If you run out of makeup remover and urgently need it, then try this. Simply mash up half an avocado and dab a cotton bud or cotton wool into the excess oil from the avocado. Gently wipe the oil over your lids and watch the makeup vanish.

Extra Murals: How to Decide What to Do

We all want to do the best for our kids. When it comes to their well-being and development, this couldn’t be truer. So how do we as parents navigate the issue of extra murals?

This is a dilemma I face with my kids. Having the opportunity to engage in extra murals is already a luxury that a lot of parents cannot afford. So I wanted my children to understand that they couldn’t possibly sign up for anything and everything they felt like. We also don’t have enough time in a day to be running to various activities.

How much time does the extra mural involve? It shouldn’t be at the expense of homework or studies. What do you need to purchase for the extra mural? Is it too costly or can you manage it easily?

How far away is the venue for the extra mural? Is it a team sport or activity? Some kids aren’t team players and may not do well at team sports. On the other hand, doing that may teach them to become team players So we came up with a solution and here it which is also a life skill. is… What are the benefits of the extra Each of my three kids had to learn how mural you’re considering? Is it solely for to swim. This was non-negotiable as enjoyment or are there other advantages swimming is a very important life skill. as well? Neither of my boys showed any inclination I’d say my main considerations are cost and to becoming Olympic swimmers so we time. If we do too much we all become ended their lessons - if they did, we may moody and tired and it stops being fun. I’d have continued. Over and above the like them each to stick to something for long swimming, they each are allowed one other enough to master it and so that they realise extra mural of their choice. that once you’ve made a choice, you need to see it through. We also considered the following: Is it something my child is interested in? By Fatima Kazee. Oakridge College

Make Reading a Priority

Set in the centre of Durban North, Oakridge College was established in 1999 and has become well-respected in its niche, cementing a reputation for delivering quality learner-centred education for boys and girls from grade 7 to grade 12.

I am often asked by the parents of learners why their children’s grades are falling as they proceed through high school. One of the first questions that I ask is “How many books does your child read each week?” More often than not the answer given is that the child does not read for enjoyment at all! There is a perception that once a child has the ability to read, there is no need to continue developing this skill! This is incorrect! Pupils that do not read continually in high school do not maintain the high marks they achieved in primary school. A non-reader who achieved 80% in grade 7 will be lucky to achieve 35 to 40% in grade 12. The reason for this decrease in marks amongst non-readers is that non-readers take longer to read examination questions and miss out vital information and subtle nuances in questions. They take longer to formulate answers and even longer to write the answers down, which means that they never complete examination papers. Very often matric learners have told me that it’s not the work they don’t know but the question they don’t understand! With modern children being exposed to electronic devices, remedial problems have become more prevalent because children do not use their imagination as they would do when reading books. A love for reading needs to be developed in the home so that children can increase their reading and comprehension levels. Foster a love for reading at home by reading articles to your child that both you and your child are interested in. Children learn by mirroring and imitating! If you are an avid reader your child will become one - let your children see you making reading a priority! Take time each day to spend time with your children READING. Make reading an enjoyable, fun interactive priority. Visit your municipal library once every two weeks and expose your child to a variety of different books.

Over the years, Oakridge College has resisted the temptation to grow class sizes beyond 12 to 14 learners, allowing the dedicated team of teachers to focus their teaching on a personal level, giving each learner the best chance of success. Oakridge College provides a disciplined environment without focussing on the more traditional school rules - this allows youngsters to achieve academic success without compromising their individuality. Learners are encouraged to understand and appreciate the purpose of their education, question the status quo and learn to see the world from differing perspectives. The school is accredited by the Department of Education, is a recognised examination centre and writes the NSC examinations in grade 12.

For 2018 and 2019 applications, visit the Oakridge College website (www.oakridge.co.za) or e-mail applications@oakridge.co.za.

New Beginning in Durban Girls’ College’s Junior Primary

2018 marks the year of new beginnings at Durban Girls’ College! With this comes a fresh opportunity to move forward and embrace life and learning in a different way – a 21st Century way! Their Junior Primary has evolved into a place of new, innovative and flexible learning spaces. They have adopted David Thornburg’s three primordial metaphors of the ‘campfire’, ‘cave’ and ‘waterhole’, and have incorporated these metaphors in their architectural design. This spatial model allows for differentiated learning and enhances individual learning styles, whilst developing the whole child. The ‘campfire’ is a space for the girls’ to gather, listen to and learn from their teacher. The ‘cave’ is a quiet, private space for thinking and reflection. The ‘waterhole’ is an area that encourages the girls to engage, share, collaborate and discover new things. This creative and unique facility ensures many happy and productive days are spent at school. Durban Girls’ College looks forward to seeing this 21st Century approach to learning expand their girls’ minds in exciting new directions! Founded in 1877, Durban Girls’ College is a Christian School for girls from Grade 00 to Grade 12, with weekly boarding from Grade 7. They inspire their girls to realise their potential through a unique educational journey built on tradition, innovation, diversity and excellence aimed at enriching our world. By Carol-Anne Conradie, Head of Junior Primary.

GO Lab: Look Forward to the Future! GO Lab understands that changes are needed in our education systems to better prepare our youth for the 21st-Century workplace. They are proud and excited to help pioneer these changes in South Africa - and give our country’s bright minds and future thinkers a chance to develop relevant skill sets, explore their unique interests and reach their full potential. They provide schools with comprehensive Lab solutions (kitted with new-age technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, programmable electronics and computer software) and each with its own resident Lab Facilitator to assist school staff, learners and even parents with the integration and shift. GO Lab focuses on learner-centred education and the development of 21st-Century Skills while guiding learner perspectives to be mindful of real-world problems. They encourage collaboration between individuals and promote self-motivated enquiry, development and evaluation throughout tasks and projects. During school hours, learners have timetabled lessons within GO Lab that are underpinned by STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Art and Maths) principles and the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. They also offer extra-mural access to the Labs via Clubs and Switch On activities that give likeminded individuals the opportunity and assisted freedom to explore their interests and further develop their own skills and talents. The future is certainly something to look forward to, with new generations using and inventing technologies that will shape the world in vastly unpredictable ways. GO Lab implores all schools and parents to embrace this inevitable change and work together with them toward a shared vision of ‘schools of the future’ - to inspire and guide the youth of our country, in a world of limitless possibility.

School Health Week School Health Week is from 4 to 8 March, and it is a reminder that we should all be teaching our children healthy lifestyle habits. The CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) has developed a Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model to improve learning and health in all schools. The model is based on the following principals. Health Education Education on the following basic personal hygiene principals can help fight the germs to prevent illness: • Teach children to always cover their coughs and sneezes by using the crook of their arm if they don’t have a tissue. This will prevent the germs from getting onto their hands and surfaces and spreading them to other children via their hands. • Germs can enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth and it is important to teach children to keep their hands away from their eyes,

mouth and nose. • They should not share water bottles and food. • To wash their hands regularly (especially before eating). • Promote physical activity to prevent obesity. • Eating a healthy balanced diet. • Sleep between 6 and 8 hours per night or more. Other ways you can keep your kids healthy at home: • Make sure they follow a healthy eating plan and pack them a healthy lunch every day • Keep them as active as possible • Be a good role model when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle • Take them for their regular check-ups and get recommended immunisations • Keep junk foods to a minimum • Make sure they drink water every day • Keep them away from smokers • Do not send them to school if they are sick • Keep stress to a minimum Source: www.ocsa.co.za and www.peoplemagazine.co.za.

South African Students Do Us Proud

A group of talented children started 2018 having won international acclaim at the PAMA Global Abacus & Mental Arithmetic Championships, which South Africa hosted on 28 December 2017 in Sandton.

“With seventeen countries represented and with close to 250 children of all ages taking place, it was encouraging to see South African children taking up some of the top spots in all the age categories,” said Marlene Mouton, the Chairperson of PAMA South Africa. “This was achieved through the efforts of the teachers of the around 620 A+Students teaching franchises who subscribe to the PAMA Global Abacus & Mental Arithmetic methods and to the students who show that maths can be both easy and fun to do.” Some of the top achievers included: • Stiaan Scheepers from A+Students in Rustenburg was South Africa’s Champion of Champions in the Group B 8 to 9 Age

category. • In Group C ages 10 to 11, Louis Scheepers took 3rd place with 91% out of 93 students missing the Champions of Champions award by 1.5%. • In Group D ages 12 to 14, Ethan Kirstein was placed 2nd out of 53 students missing the Champions of Champions award by 2%. • In Group E ages 15+, Zandri Boshoff was a 1st placed winner out of 3 entrants. • Over twenty South African children achieved 80% and above marks achieving Champion first and second status. General Secretary of PAMA, Mr David Liao was impressed by the level of abacus and mental arithmetic training in South Africa through the A+Students network. “It is encouraging to see South Africa compete on such a high level with some of the top performing countries in the world, including many Asian countries.” Visit www.aplusstudents.co.za for more information.

Fun in the Garden Build a mud pie kitchen Find a place to create your mud pie kitchen outside. You will need to set up a work surface. Old wooden/plastic crates are good for this, or stacks of bricks bridged by old planks. If you can add the odd shelf somewhere, then even better - it will give you a place to store your utensils and ingredients. Find some containers and old kitchen equipment for mixing your pies. Plastic washing up bowls and jugs, stainless-steel dishes and plastic or wooden spoons all work well as they won’t break easily and can be left outside.

Party Life

Then it’s about collecting ingredients. Obviously, mud or dirt is top of the list, but feel free to add leaves, grass, twigs and, well, pretty much anything! And don’t forget water – just to make sure everything sticks together in a gloopy, yucky mess! Rock Painting You will need: rounded rocks, acrylic pens or paints, painting apron or old clothes, outdoor table, old cloth or plastic sheet to cover table, pots or buckets. Rocks can be surprisingly fun! If you set up an outdoor craft table, you can decorate them so they become permanent pieces in outdoor games or activities.

Fun Easter Game: Glitter Confetti Eggs

Confetti eggs (aka Cascarones) are like mini piñatas for your head. Traditionally, hollowed out eggs are broken over the head of a friend, showering them with confetti… and supposedly good luck.

hole at the bottom of the larger part of an egg. Let the egg drain out of the larger hole into a bowl, blowing the residue out through the small pin hole in the top of the egg if you need to encourage the yolk out a little more quickly. Rinse the egg shell (you can add a little bleach to get rid of the egg smell) and allow it to dry. Use dye (or vinegar and food colouring) to colour the eggshell and allow it to dry thoroughly. Fill the egg about halfway with confetti (or whatever you decide to put inside). Cut a piece of tissue paper slightly larger in size than the egg’s hole. Glue the paper to the edges of the hole.

Party Rules Hide your confetti eggs as you would normal eggs, and let your friends go hunting for them. Once everyone has collected the eggs, the *kindly* smashing upon heads begins. No throwing eggs! Proper egg-smashing etiquette requires your hand to come in contact with the other person’s head so that you aren’t hitting anyone too hard or poking anyone’s eyes out. The lucky winner who gets the glitter egg smashed on their head goes home with the grand prize of the day. Voila - your eggs are filled. You are ready to party! Science Experiment: Brush an Egg Supplies needed: • Black permanent marker • 3 clear cups/glasses • Dark coloured soda • Fruit juice • Water • 3 white eggs, raw or hardboiled • Toothbrush • Toothpaste Science question: Why is soda bad for teeth? We will test what happens when we drink soda using eggshells as the stand-in for teeth. The Experiment: With the marker, label one cup “soda”, another “juice and another “water”. Fill each cup with the liquid you labelled it with. Place one egg in each cup and let them sit overnight. In the morning, pour the liquids out, leaving the eggs in the marked cups so you can tell which egg soaked in which liquid. Examine eggs to see how they have changed. The outcome: The egg in the soda, like your teeth, will become stained a dark colour, and you might be able to see areas where the shell enamel is eroded and other areas where there are little pits in the eggshell. Why it worked: The enamel on your tooth protects the soft inside, or dentin. When that is compromised or damaged, you will get a cavity (like the pits on the eggshell) and your mouth will begin to hurt. Variation: With a plain, dry toothbrush, try to brush the stains off of the eggs. Did they come off? Now wet the brush and try again with toothpaste. See how important it is to brush your teeth?! mindful of placing taller vases and jars towards the back of the table.

• A beautiful wooden table will provide an elegant contrast to the glass and mirror elements. Add a third complimenting element by placing some beautiful extravagant floral arrangements in three tall glass cylinders along the back of the table. For a backdrop with more colour, replace the flowers with large cylinders filled with pastel Easter or painted eggs.

• Finally, personalised décor items and touches are key to creating a unique dessert display – simple elements such as unique labels or beautiful ceramics add a chic, personal touch to your sweetie display.
