How is it November? I mean, wow! It seems like just a few months ago that Andrew and I decided that we would start doing a regular Friday braai with our team after work – maybe once a month or every other month, as it’s a really nice way to end a busy week… Well, I can tell you that we have done it just once and that was last December! Does time fly even faster as you get older…? We’ve had such a busy October month which started with a house move in the school holidays then dance exams, festivals, competitions and shows for my daughter, basketball matches and school projects for my son, illnesses for all of us, a weekend away to a game reserve followed by tick bite fever for hubby plus we had the wonderful ‘Bravissimo’ fundraising event in aid of ‘Hero777’ Organ Donor Awareness, which was a huge success! I’m sure things will get even busier as we lead up to Christmas! In fact it seems that the festive season is already upon us – the Christmas trees are up in the shops and decorations and gifts are available everywhere you look, which does seem crazy (when writing this in October) but it will soon be here. We’re going back home to the UK to visit our families and friends again this year, so really are looking forward to Christmas. We have an 80th birthday, an 18th birthday and a 1st birthday to celebrate, so it really will be a special time of family celebrations. I’m so excited to have my favourite DJ Darren Maule on the cover this month – it was such a fun photo shoot but at the end of it, of course with such a huge bunch of balloons involved, one of the kids accidentally let go of them and we sadly waved goodbye as they floated away! You can read lots more about Darren and what he gets up to inside this issue. Enjoy! Victoria xxx 5

Being a Parent Being a parent yes, I know that it’s a responsibility and blah, blah, blah - but it’s really cool. Being a single parent, eh, it’s a little bit harder and you’ve got to really pay attention to the cool bits because half the time you’re just doing the surviving bits. You just want to get through, you know. You kinda give up on ‘excel’, and you just want to make sure that it’s clean, washed, fed, and educated. And delivered to extramurals. Once you’ve done that, you’re winning at life. And if they get to excel, then that’s a bonus! With my Mouse, I’m very, very lucky and I’m very, very happy to say that she takes that all on herself. And she’s just amazing. For example, she did her first Amashova at 10 years old, which upsets me because she beat me by 30 years. She also beat me by three years for her first live performance at the Playhouse. Which is also slightly upsetting. I’m the over-achiever in this family and somebody is treading on my toes! It’s fine. I’m not bitter. But she is a little bit of an over-achiever.
on the cycle back the wind destroys dad. And that’s roughly 10kms…. I think?! So, the Amashova would be four of those… roughly. So, in answer to her question I say, “It’s like riding from Bike & Bean to uShaka and back again four times”. “Ok, let’s do it.” “Are you sure baby?” Now you must remember I don’t even let her go on her scooter or skateboard or bicycle down the hill on my driveway, because that’s how dads are. Paranoid. I didn’t even THINK about Fields Hill. There we are going down Fields Hill and my speedometer on my larney bike (because that’s how I roll) says we’re clocking 42km/h - it suddenly hits me like a ton of bricks. I can do absolutely nothing if something happens here. I can’t jump out. I can’t dive out. I can’t save her. Yes, she’s got her helmet on, yes there’s 30 000 other people there, but if she comes a cropper?? I realised that I am parenting here and I am not winning! I did not think about this. Going 42km/h down Fields Hill. (Bearing in mind that the following weekend was her debut at the Playhouse.) There I was shouting, “Don’t look back at me! Look forward! Watch the road! Tap the brake!” I don’t think I did well in that situation. I think I might have panicked. I definitely panicked. But we survived Fields Hill, and we survived Amashova. Only once did I get an “Are we there yet?”. You explain exactly the same way as when you’re driving from Durban to Plettenburg, or Joburg to Durban, or Bloemfontein to Cape Town and you have children in the car. You tell them how far it is in ways that they’ll understand. So obviously I told her (after we’d done 30kms) that we’d only done 5km and we still had 30km to go (Insert evil dad laugh here)). There was a slight moment of panic and the shoulders went down in defeat. Of course, I did the dad thing and admitted my mistake.
I remember, for the Amashova, I was supposed to ride with Sky Tshabalala, my sports presenter on East Coast Breakfast; he was humming and hawing and he had a golf day to do the next day. He didn’t want to do the 65km. I wanted to do the 65km. So as a last-minute thing I turned to my daughter and said, “Baby, do you want to ride the Amashova?” and she was like, “How far is it?”. So, there I am trying to doing the math in my head because I don’t know how to explain 35km to a 10-year-old... We do I mean, who would torture their child like cycle every now and then from the Bike & that? That was epic. Bean to uShaka and back again, but only on days when there isn’t a headwind, because By Darren Maule. www.mumsmail.com

World Champ Walks Among Us so far. She went into the race as one of the top three, and won by 30 seconds! “I experienced a moment of relief - those ten years of rowing weren’t for nothing! Part of me thought that was it for me, but the opportunities since then have turned 2018 into the best year!” says Hayley. She now has more sponsors which means she can participate in more big races overseas - and she hasn’t lost an international race this year! Durban North resident, Hayley-Jo Nixon (nee Arthur) is the Women’s Surfski World Champion. She was born and raised in Durban North and after attending school in Durban North and Kloof, Hayley went on to study sport science and biokinetics at Rhodes and TUKS. This was when the rowing bug bit! TUKS was where the national rowing team was based, and it wasn’t long before Hayley started rowing for her varsity. She spent 10 years making her way through the rowing system to world level. While living in Jo’burg she was working as a biokineticist part-time while rowing full time in the SA team (2007 – 2012). She also spent 13 months living in Australia before coming home to Durban. This was when Hayley was invited by friends to go surfski paddling - and she fell in love with it! Since 2013 she has been racing for South Africa - flat water canoeing and marathon surfski racing.
Equality for women “Surfski is becoming more professional – big companies are funding more races, making it more competitive,” explains Hayley. “There has been a big shift in women’s racing. The competition is fiercer, making it more exciting! We are now able to stand up for ourselves and demand equal prize money, which means more equality with the men.” In a big move, the Nelo Summer Challenge in Portugal has handicapped women and men so that women can race the men, and there is an extra bonus for the overall winner. This is revolutionary and provides many good opportunities for women. We are pleased to announce that Hayley was the overall winner this year!
Hayley is now working toward the 2019 World Champs and is working from home “When I first started paddling, I was known doing online coaching for paddling, training as The Girl in the Reeds… I was hopeless!” programmes and mentoring for clients all laughs Hayley. “It was very humbling, but I over the world. knew I could be good at it so I persevered.” Hayley is about to leave for a six-week She tried out various types of paddling, tour to East London for National Champs, trying to find her niche. In 2015 she then Hong Kong for the Dragon Pan, and qualified for the ICF Ocean Racing World then Australia for four more races. 6 Quick Home Maintenance Tips
Home maintenance isn’t restricted to repairs. In fact, certain tasks, when performed regularly, may actually prevent things from breaking in the first place. But when things do go wrong (and it’s inevitable that they do), we have some backup plans that you can try before you grab the phone to call for pro. Appliances and plumbing are the most frequent offenders, but they also often can be the simplest to care for. From the gutters to the living room carpet, there’s a reliable method for keeping every part of your home clean, safe, and well maintained.
2. Vacuum the clothes dryer’s exhaust duct at least once a year. If the duct is plastic, replace it (it’s a fire hazard). Rigid sheetmetal ducting is best. 3. Clean leaves and debris from the condenser of a central air conditioner seasonally. 4. Once a year, vacuum the refrigerator coils underneath/behind the appliance. 5. Have the fireplace chimney inspected and cleaned annually.
Must-Do Maintenance: The quickest fix is to not have the problem 6. Inspect window and door caulking and in the first place. Dr Des@Home It has been reported by the World Health Organisation that the world is running out of antibiotics, but what does this mean? Antibiotics are used to treat and prevent bacterial infections, but bacteria change in the response to antibiotics when it is misused. These bacteria, not humans or animals, become antibiotic-resistant, making it difficult to treat infections such as pneumonia, TB and foodborne diseases. World Diabetes Day: The Family and Diabetes
The importance of diabetes screening and awareness is paramount for early diagnosis. Health education can provide information regarding effective treatment and prevention of complications that can occur due to incorrect management of this chronic disease. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 is non-preventable and insulin dependent. People are usually born with this type of diabetes. Type 2 adult onset diabetes/non-insulin dependent diabetes. This type can be prevented and treated effectively. This is the most common type and makes up 90% of all diabetics. Diabetes is a disorder of a person’s metabolism characterised by an increase in blood glucose levels. It is usually due to either insulin resistance - which is a condition where the insulin released does not work properly and glucose is not absorbed from the blood into the cells of the body OR due to an insufficient amount of insulin produced by the pancreas.
Causes of diabetes: • Increased number of people living in cities now and leading a more sedentary lifestyle • Ageing populations - people living to an older age now • Unhealthy diets • High sugar intake in the diet • Increase in obesity The signs and symptoms of diabetes: • Constant thirst • Frequent urination • Lethargy • Blurred vision • Weight loss • Increased hunger Treatment: • Regular monitoring of blood glucose • Cut out all sugar in the diet • Lose weight • Increase exercise and activity • See a doctor who will prescribe medication to promote more insulin to be secreted from the pancreas • Monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels • Insulin injections may eventually be required Written by Mbali Mzimela (BPharm) and Sr Claire de Villiers (Bcur). Varicose Veins Be Gone!
I have been bothered by a few unsightly veins in my legs since I was around 15 years old. I have some larger veins and quite a lot of spider veins, but had one huge cluster of spider veins on the inside of my knee which actually looked like a bruise. It also protruded a little and was sometimes tender. I thought that maybe they were hereditary as my mum also has quite a few spider vein clusters and she tells me that every time she had another child a new cluster would appear (and she has 5 kids!) My spider and blue veins seem to have gotten worse over the last few years, probably because I am getting older but also perhaps because I sit a lot and don’t have very good circulation in my legs, who knows! So I decided it was time to visit the highly recommend Dr Johan Blignaut in Umhlanga. When I walked into his consulting rooms I felt so at home – his rooms are very relaxing with plush sofas and rugs, that it really put me at ease.
Dr Blignaut quickly assessed me by scanning the veins in my legs and discovered that I had one varicose vein in my left leg which needed surgery – I had a faulty valve in the vein which was causing the blood to flow back down the leg the wrong way, causing the vein to protrude slightly, so I booked in to have the procedure done a couple of weeks later. During the very quick procedure Dr Blignaut anaesthetised the vein and then inserted a catheter into my leg and cauterised the vein from the inside at a very high temperature, so it would in effect kill the vein. The other veins are just cosmetic veins and are able to be treated using sclerotherapy. So watch this space for my progress and some before and after pics as the healing process continues. Join the Walk for Health at The Durban Wellness Festival Diabetes is known as the tsunami of the 21st century, killing more people worldwide than AIDS and cancer combined, and yet, people know so little about this serious condition. The Durban Wellness Festival, supported by SASA, Lily and Clover Tropika Slenda, as well as the Protea Hotel by Marriott Durban Edward, has been created to show people that they can make positive changes before it is too late. It takes place on Sunday 11 November and is a celebration of all things healthy, with a 5km fun run/walk, music, Zumba Bollywood style, Yoga and a Yoga Laughter Session and an expo that not only aims to raise awareness about the scourge of diabetes in South Africa but also to encourage people to look after the one thing that money cannot buy - their health. One of the aims of the walk is to encourage regular exercise, which helps keep blood
sugar levels stable, reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases and improves one’s general well-being. The Wellness Expo provides the opportunity for the public to have their blood pressure, blood sugar, eyes and feet tested on the day. Taking place at the Durban Amphitheatre at the Bay of Plenty, the Durban Wellness Festival 5km fun walk will open for registration at 7am, at just R60 per person, and officially kicks off at 8am sharp with the cut-off at 10am. The lucky draw prizes take place thereafter from 10.15am. All proceeds generated from the 5km fun run/ walk is going towards Diabetes SA Durban and will go back into the education of this dreaded condition within KZN. World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day is on 14 November. When you have diabetes, your body is either unable to make enough insulin, or it is unable to correctly use the insulin it does make. As a result, the glucose in your bloodstream cannot move into your cells to be used as energy and thus creates a buildup, resulting in high glucose levels.
At least 50% of those with diabetes are unaware of their condition. “That means that those numbers are, in reality far higher. In some countries this figure may reach 80%. Mooimaak Makeovers: Bernice du Plessis
Due to a lifetime of smoking and having lost 20kg via a banting diet, Bernice du Plessis looked a lot older than a woman in her mid-60s. Fortunately, kykNET’s Mooimaak team lead by Skin Renewal’s Dr Dalize Willemse and therapist Johandi Koch, could work their magic to improve her deep-set wrinkles.
of the face while hyaluronic acid dermal fillers plump up those in the bottom half as well as areas that have lost volume. The result is a much smoother-looking complexion. A little lift Bernice was a great candidate for a nonsurgical neck lift that involved using threads to lift up her sagging skin. Dr Dalize used three different types of threads to create an immediate ‘lifted look’ that improves over time as they also encourage skin to produce more of its own collagen.
Not your average facial As Bernice’s skin was in dire need of more skin-plumping collagen, she was given a series of Carboxy-Laser facial treatments that include Carboxytherapy, Laser Genesis and a Glycolic Peel. Each of the treatments simulated collagen while the peel revealed Bernice was completely thrilled with her new, fresh skin; the laser accelerates healing transformation and we think you’ll agree and carboxytherapy improves circulation. that her new, much smoother complexion is most definitely a look to love. Caversham Education Institute: Inspiring the Teachers of Young Children
There are many exciting developments in Early Childhood Development (ECD) in our country! The National Integrated Policy for ECD (March 2015) acknowledges the critical importance of the early years and states that by 2030 all young children, from birth to the year they enter Grade R, will have access to appropriate, quality ECD programmes. To support this vision the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) has been developed and this provides national guidelines for those offering ECD programmes. The National Policy for ECD also acknowledges the pivotal role played by the teacher. It is exciting that for the first time in South Africa, recognition is being given to the training and working conditions of preschool teachers. All those working with young children will be required to have a relevant ECD qualification with preference given to qualifications at NQF Level 5, the Higher Certificate and National Diploma in ECD. These latest developments
in ECD energised and inspired Caversham Institute to continue offering excellence in ECD teacher training. The Institute has designed and had approved a nine month elective course that specialises in “Teaching & Learning Birth to Five”. This course forms a component for credits toward the Higher Certificate and National Diploma in ECD (Qualifications 23117 & 23118). It is offered on a part-time basis, allowing students to teach during the week and obtain a national qualification on Saturdays. If you are passionate about young children and believe that a career in teaching this age group is not only important, but vital to the future of individuals, families, communities and ultimately our country, contact Caversham Education Institute. Cornerstone Remedial School
Cornerstone Remedial School is a reputable and well-established remedial school based in Durban North. From humble beginnings, they are now a learning establishment to be reckoned with!
Cornerstone is one of the only schools within the community that caters for both remedial and special needs learners; yet some mainstream learners join them as they thrive within the incredible and supportive environment. By encompassing learners’ diverse needs, they support each child’s uniqueness. The staff are highly qualified in their fields and go beyond their duties to ensure that learners thrive within this nurturing environment. Their services as an educational establishment run hand in hand with various therapists and other professionals, to ensure a multi-disciplinary approach where needed. There has been a dire need for schools such as Cornerstone, who cater for those learners with diverse learning needs. They offer a warm,

approachable, therapeutic and holistic environment wherein each learner can fulfil their own potential. While one area of focus is around academics, they are accustomed to working with emotional, behavioural and other barriers to learning. However, learners struggling with basic fundamentals of reading, writing and mathematics require immediate additional support - the longer the delay, the wider the gaps become. Special needs and remedial learners require individual and one-on-one attention, which Cornerstone provides. Learning is extended through the aftercare and homework centre which offers further support. Cornerstone is proud to say that their doors are open to all learners from other learning environments. Currently, Cornerstone caters for grade R to grade 7 - however, they are extremely excited to announce that the school will be expanding to include a high school in 2019. Watch this space! Helping your Toddler with Separation Anxiety
Separation anxiety is a real and scary emotion many children experience when having to say goodbye to their parents. Each child reacts and deals with separation anxiety differently. It’s important to be able to identify signs of separation anxiety and how you can better equip yourself and your child.
Children may have one of four different anxiety separation styles such as: The crier, the brave but scared child (I’m not going to cry, I’m not going to cry), the delayed reactor and the silent observer. Some signs of separation anxiety could be clinging to parent/caregiver, tantrums, not wanting to go to school, nightmares, complaining they are sick or fear and restlessness when parent is in another room/bedtime.
period. Smile and encourage your child as this will make them feel safer. Try not to be on your phone as this takes away the important time with your child and makes it even more difficult for them to settle. Always tell your children the truth when leaving for work or going to run an errand. It may seem easier for you to lie to your child to make them settle quicker or feel more comfortable but it will have a negative impact on your child later on in life, as they will see lying as an easy way out.
Practice separating from your child during weekends or one day of the week and allow your child to go and stay with a family relative for the night. Providing your child During these moments parents should with a comfort object from home is always instead of sneaking off, say goodbye in a a good idea as they can relate to a familiar quick and short manner and not allow the object of their own. child to feel as if their parents are never coming back. Water Games Now that summer is here, these games will be fun for your kids to play at home in the garden or at their next party! What a great way to keep them cool too! Splash For obvious reasons, this is best played on a hot sunny day, in swimsuits and with towels at the ready. This will keep the kids entertained for hours! Begin by writing numbers 1 to 10 on separate bits of paper and place them in a hat or container. Next, ask a grown-up to bring out a bucket of water – make sure it’s nice and refreshingly cold! One child is the ‘splasher’ and pulls one of the numbers out of the hat at random, without letting the others know what it is. The splasher then stands in the centre of a circle with a beaker of water, whilst the others take it in turns to call out a number. When the secret number is called, the child who says it gets a surprise soaking (screaming is optional) before becoming the splasher themselves.

Water Balloon Toss The idea of this game is NOT to burst the water balloon. I know: weird, isn’t it? First, fill up and tie your stash of water balloons and place them carefully on a towel outside until you’re ready to use them. Next, everyone pairs up and then stands in two lines, facing their partners. One person from each pair is given a water balloon and must gently throw it to their partner who will try to catch it without bursting it. After each successful catch, the thrower takes a step back, making the next throw a little bit trickier. The winners are the pair who manage to keep their balloon intact over the longest distance.
