The School Holidays Are Here Already

We had a fab day on our first ever ‘Youth Day’ holiday this year – whilst some people spent the day on the beach, we decided to go to the ‘Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market’ and thought it was wonderful. It was a bit chilly but it didn’t stop us enjoying the delicious food, hot drinks and music they had to offer. What a fantastic family day out, I would definitely recommend it and will be going back again soon. I was really surprised at the variety of goods on offer too, as well as the number of stalls. I bought so many things – from jewellery and clothes to toys and ornaments - I have even got a surprise or two in store for hubby’s birthday this month! Now the holidays are here and we’re off on our much anticipated trip to the UK. I cannot wait to see my family and friends and even have my sister’s wedding to go to whilst we’re there – my daughter is being a flower girl - so it will certainly be a fun filled trip. I have a very busy itinerary planned but I’m not sure anyone can understand all the colour coding on my spreadsheet!

At home she likes playing board games, drawing, watching movies and playing games on the iPad. “She is very energetic so we have tried to occupy her with a few activities including ballet and hip hop (her favourites), swimming and piano. She recently earned her 400 metre distance swimming badge, which made us extremely proud,” says Roland.

“Parents have the potential to involve their children in too many things and push them too hard. Sometimes parents forget that kids need to be kids. Hanging upside down on monkey bars is just as important as learning the alphabet. It’s all about balance.” As a family they love trying new foods and recipes, taking short weekend getaways and having mini family adventures like zip lining, going on safari, driving to the Midlands and ice skating. A good family movie with popcorn is also way up there! Roland and Fatisya say that watching Inara develop and grow daily, witnessing those lightbulb moments and her realising that she CAN do it are some of the things they love about being her parents. www.mumsmail.com

Ithemba Labasha: Hope for Our Children Ithemba Labasha Community Centre was built in 2006 and is situated behind Simibithi in Shakas Head. They have 150 children visit the community centre daily.
Holiday Camps +
Their aim is to act as a place of safety and to educate and feed children from the local community. Their parents go to work, so they have nowhere to go during the day, as there are no schools for them. This is where the community has helped to pay for a fully equipped facility for the children.
R500 OFF
There is a crèche at the community centre, and they are busy building a computer room sponsored by The Lions Derivco. They will offer training to the older children and school leavers, such as painting, brick laying and electrical – all sponsored by local companies.

These people will then be allowed to work at the companies and shadow employees, empowering them to get jobs and be successful. They hope to develop the centre into a shining light in the community and they have plans to upgrade the centre and clean up the community through their ‘Litter4tokens’ project. The aim of ‘Litter4tokens’ campaign is to instil pride and put respect back into the community by encouraging hard work and in turn, helping to feed and clothe people. The ‘Litter4tokens’ campaign was launched in December. Each bag of litter that is brought back gets two tokens, which can be exchanged for goods from the token shop. The token shop is stocked by the community and various sponsors. They are appealing for monthly donations of food, money, clothes and toys for the token shop.

Hibberdene Holiday Home
Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home For more than 80 years, the Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home has offered impoverished children the opportunity to have a short seaside holiday, free from worry and deprivation. More than 1 500 children are given this opportunity each year in a safe, happy environment with nutritious meals and managed by committed staff. These programmes are structured by Sherlock Sithole (youth worker) in conjunction with doctor of education and psychologist, Maliga Chetty. They select and train the team leaders for the programmes, all of whom are training to be teachers or social workers. In addition, they tailor programmes to be age specific so that every child from youngest to oldest will benefit. “The Mercury Hibberdene Home offers the most beautiful, peaceful place for children to forget the humdrum of their lives for a while. They respond so well to our programmes in this environment and they have such fun while they learn”, said Sherlock. Lending Money to Lovers Married or not, money matters can be toxic in relationships. The ‘rule’ in this regard, is this – in close relationships, do not ‘lend’ money to a lover. If you must, have a written agreement. Recently, my client met the girl of his dreams. Before long, he discovered that the dreams were nightmares. Initially though, there were things that held them together. Physical attraction was primary, along with the fact that both had recently had bad break-ups. And both had children from their previous relationships. They thought they had all they needed for a ‘blended family’ and everlasting harmony. Both were wrong.
a new ‘flame’. War broke out and she evicted him forcefully from ‘their’ home. He demanded his money back. Both lawyered up. There was no contract - he claimed a loan, she said it was a gift. Only the lawyers ‘won’.
Before the crash, they decided to create a joint home where they would nurture their ‘tribe’. She already owned a home, but it was a tad too small for their needs. After looking at houses, they decided that it would be better to add a couple of rooms to the existing residence, rather than incurring the extra costs of selling the old and buying the new.

Wildekrans Wine Estate and Endless Vineyards Just an hour away from Cape Town city centre, you’ll find the charming, old-world vineyard and wine estate, Wildekrans. The brain-child of prolific South African businessman Gary Harlow, the focus of this quaint wine estate lies very much in creating a fully home-grown product. Wildekrans is a boutique winery, so everything from the planting, harvesting, ageing, bottling and labelling, is done on site – this is exactly what makes Wildekrans a world-class wine destination. The estate, located on rolling hills overlooking ‘Walker Bay’ is unique in this part of the country. The estate was originally a mixed farming operation, but today produces some of the finest wines, not just in South Africa, but the world over. The farm itself is a getaway destination like no other. Called ‘Endless Vineyards’, eight old Dutch-style cottages are located on this sprawling, untouched estate flanked by a rich farm of grapevines. There are seven two-bedroom and one three-bedroom units. All are incredibly well equipped, so the traveller has the option to self-cater, if they don’t want to take meals in the on-site restaurant.

True sustainability starts with each one of us as individuals. With a slight change in our attitudes, each one of us as homeowners can make a massive impact on planet rehabilitation. Too much carbon is still being released into the atmosphere. Collectively as eco estates, private home owners, schools and even entire communities, we can recycle ALL our bio refuse from kitchens, homes and gardens and put it directly back into the soil – your own garden – to produce healthier plants that are not as dependant on water. By increasing the water holding capacity of our soils using organic matter, we increase its ability to hold water, making your gardens and lawns less affected by droughts and disease. Pure Soil International (PSI) will design a system that works for you or your community.

PSI’s two pronged approach: 1. To introduce humus to already established lawns to allow for more water retention. Humus prevents this water loss and retains water for later use by the plants, therefore reducing irrigation events and pumping costs. 2. To set up a system whereby homes, schools, hospitals or any institution is recycling all its organic waste, from kitchen scraps and office paper to the garden cuttings. All of this can be converted to compost or vermi-castings and compost teas can be applied to lawns and gardens. All plants respond to humus, leaving stronger healthier systems that are not severely affected during times of water stress. PSI will also provide you with the training, mentorship and equipment to achieve this. No matter what size the institution, it is possible! Allergy Testing in Children If your child has an allergy, you’ll want to know what it is that the body sees as a threat. Symptoms like chronic runny noses, sneezing, wheezing and hives are the result of an overreaction of your immune system to an irritant. These are the most common tests used: Skin test – The back of the arm is lightly pricked with a comb-like tool and a small amount of allergen is added. The result takes 20 minutes and is cheap, but there is a chance of having an acute allergic reaction. The blood test can give a wider spectrum of results, including inhalants, as well as a food screen and it is the safer option for drug induced allergic reactions. The result will take a few days. If you suspect that your child might be suffering from allergies, these tests will help you and your doctor to assist your child with the correct treatment plan.

What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy affects 1 in 100 people in South Africa. There are 50 million people living with epilepsy globally. Epilepsy is a neurological condition that is characterised by unusual electrical activity in the brain, causing unprovoked seizures. It is not a psychological disorder or illness and it is not contagious. The brain is made up of billions of nerve cells or neurons that communicate through electrical and chemical signals. When there is a sudden excessive electrical discharge that disrupts the normal activity of the nerve cells, a seizure may result.
epilepsy because they are bewitched.
There are quite a few misconceptions about the condition that inhibits an improved quality of life for a person with epilepsy. Some of these misconceptions include: • People living with epilepsy can’t excel at things that require physical or intellectual work, such as sport. • People living with epilepsy should be treated differently. • People have epilepsy because someone did something wrong. • People have
What to do if someone has a seizure: • Protect the person from injury. • Cushion the head. • Do not restrict movement or put anything in their mouth. • Help breathing by laying the person on their side. • Stay with them until they are fully recovered.
Recreational activities are important for socialising and happiness. With some adjustments, people with epilepsy can enjoy activities that may be considered ‘dangerous’. Often the risks are no greater for people with epilepsy than for non-disabled people. For most people with epilepsy, the biggest problem they have to face is other people’s attitudes to epilepsy. What people with epilepsy need most is understanding and acceptance from the public.

Mental Illness Isn’t All in the Mind
KIRSTEN FRIIS M.A. (Counselling Psychology) (Rhodes)
July is Mental Health Awareness Month. “It is okay to ask for help – particularly when it comes to treating anxiety disorders, depression and burnout”, writes Penny Haw. Burnout, depression and anxiety disorders are different illnesses, but they share several important traits. They are all real and highly prevalent, and each carries the unfortunate, age-old stigma of mental illness. It’s ridiculous, really. Fearing others will judge and treat us differently, many of us downplay, deny and even try to hide mental ailments. Burnout, depression and anxiety disorders are illnesses, they are not character flaws. And, unlike many character flaws, they respond to treatment and can be controlled. But help is required. “Ego”, says Johannesburg psychiatrist and clinical psychologist Dr Frans Korb, “adds to the reluctance to seek treatment”.
Subscribe to our newsletter on www.mumsmail.com
People find it hard to admit they need help, particularly psychological help, because they imagine it’s a sign of weakness. “Depression and anxiety disorders are biological illnesses. There are certain chemicals in the brain, including serotonin, noradrenalin and dopamine, which regulate mood and the way people feel. When the concentration of these chemicals becomes abnormal, people need medication to restore the balance. That is why the conditions need to be treated from a medical point of view,” he says. “Unfortunately, stigma works against people coming forward for help. However, once patients accept their condition is medical, it reassures them and they are more inclined to seek professional help.”

Mandela Day Blood Drive To encourage people to do 67 minutes of community service for ‘Mandela Day’, the Durban North Blood Donor Centre will hold a special blood drive on Monday 18 July from 8am to 6pm. Mum’s Mail, Tate, Nolan & Knight and Chateau Gateaux will host the event and The Sunflower Fund will be in attendance to educate and recruit 67 healthy and committed donors. Every donor will receive a special promotional gift and there will be lucky draws taking place throughout the day. Last year 154 people donated a pint of blood at the ‘Mandela Day Blood Drive’, and this year they hope to top that number. All businesses in the Durban North area, as well as the Durban North community are encouraged to go along and donate a life-saving unit of blood. In order to be a blood donor, one has to be 16 years or older, weigh over 50kg, be in good health and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.

Potential stem cell donors need to be between the ages of 18 and 45 and in good health, they need to weigh over 50kg with a BMI of less than 40. All it takes is two test tubes of blood to register as a donor and if you are ever lucky enough to be a match for a patient, the process of donating stem cells is similar to platelet donation, no invasive surgery is required. Herbal Parasite Cleanse
In her book, ‘The Cure for All Diseases’, Dr Clark makes many references to the role that parasites play in disease. She claims that because of the solvent exposure we have in the 21st century and more specifically in the past 50 years, we now have what she calls a “new generation of disease”.
Dr Clark advises four basic steps – that we take measures to rid ourselves of these potentially destructive invaders, that we pay more attention to where we may be getting exposure to these organisms in the first place, that we take measures to clear the toxins we have had exposure to out of the body and fix any damage they may have done, and finally we learn where we have been exposing ourselves to these toxins and learn how not to put them back!

Sh’Zen’s Winter Remedy
Weight Loss speciaL
ECR House & Garden Show Special
Hippocrates said in 500 BC, that the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day. Soaking in a hot tub at the end of a cold winter’s day is the ultimate way to revive, rejuvenate and relax. Aroma therapeutic baths are one of the most important and versatile forms of treatment – with the correct essential oils it can give relief from muscular pain and skin conditions and act as a treatment or preventative measure for colds and flu. There are at least 30 different strains of virus which can cause cold symptoms. The essential oils most likely to diminish the discomfort of a cold and help reduce risk of secondary infections due to their bactericidal properties are: Niaouli, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Rosemary and Tea tree – and these form the basis for ‘Sh’Zen’s Resistance Crystals’. Releasing these oils via a hot bath, causing steam inhalation, combines several positive effects – decongests nasal passages, relaxes muscles and promotes a good night’s rest, which aids the healing process. These oils also help to stimulate sweating, which has long been recognised in natural forms of healing, as a valuable response to infection. Pour five to 10 ml of the ‘Sh’Zen Resistance Bath Crystals for Body’ under warm running water, lie back and relax for at least 15 minutes while the deeply purifying oils cocoon you with their healing and comforting aromas. For maximum benefit, massage the ‘Resistance Oil’ onto neck, back and feet before bed! Contact Claudette on 082 494 427.

It’s Time for Times Tables The dreaded day arrives when your child has to learn their tables. Chanting, learning by heart and awful tables tests come to mind. How do you learn tables and still keep a happy family relationship? Here are some suggestions: • Start with counters and tactile objects to show how tables work. • Move on to the abstract. • Eliminate simple facts like doubles and multiples of 2, 5 and 10. • Make flash cards of the tricky tables and practise, practise, practise! • Get some fun games to make the process exciting and original. So where are the games? Well, you may not realise it but there are games you already have that are perfect for adapting, to use for teaching tables. A simple pack of playing cards, and the basic game of ‘snap’ is easily adapted. Initially, stick to the lower numbers and then gradually add in the higher numbers. The picture cards represent ten. Deal out the cards between the two players and then turn up the top card together. Instead of “snap!” – call out the times table answer. The first person to call the right answer keeps the cards. Another great game is called ‘Connect 4’. You can adapt this game by numbering the counters and the players have to connect four according to multiplication facts. Number the one colour discs in odd numbers and the other colour discs in even numbers. Think out the box and have fun learning tables together!

Possible symptoms of stress can include: Physical signs: tense muscles, headaches, stomach aches, rapid heartbeat, being cold, skin rash, shakiness, disturbed sleep, fatigue and illness. Mental signs: poor concentration, whirling mind, forgetfulness, difficulty problem solving, being easily distracted, confusion, being irrational. As most working parents are preoccupied with the demands of life it’s understandable the subtle nuances of a child’s stress symptoms may go unnoticed. That’s OK, don’t be hard on yourself! Tips to reduce yours and your child’s stress • Learn stress techniques to help you cope • Encourage your children to communicate the stress they experience • Continually affirm your love and support to your children (verbally and physically) – this keeps them feeling safe and secure • Dedicate quality time to your children on a daily basis. During this time ensure your attention is purely on your children – switch off radio, TV and gadets • Share at least one family meal per day together around the dining table (without gadgets). Edible Dinosaur Eggs This idea was sent to us by a reader, so I just had to try it out. I made them with my son over the weekend and they turned out great! You could serve these at a dinosaur themed party, and your child can help you make them. My son was delighted when we peeled them the next morning. He wanted to know if they were going to hatch. So I said “No, we’re going to eat them!” He was horrified! Ingredients: • Boiled eggs • Water • Food colouring Method: • Boil your eggs until cool – add some salt to the water to prevent cracking. • Let the eggs cool completely. • Crack the egg shells without peeling. Don’t crack them evenly all around – try and make it uneven so they look real – big cracks and little cracks. • Soak eggs in a glass or bowl of water mixed with food colouring overnight in the fridge. We soaked each egg in a different colour. • When you wake up, peel the eggs and you have authentic looking (edible) dinosaur eggs! • One of our eggs broke when we were peeling it, so peel them carefully! Toyland Educare
Toyland Educare
Toyland Educare in Glenwood aims to provide a stimulating but relaxed and secure atmosphere, in which a child can develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually – growing in confidence and self-esteem and acquiring the skills necessary for formal education. This is achieved by learning through play and by providing wellchosen educational materials, equipment and a stimulating programme, based on themes suitable for the pre-school years. The programme is designed to meet the needs of the children at all stages of development, so that he/she is well prepared to move forward to Grade 1. An enthusiastic team of sensitive, friendly teachers help to create a warm, loving atmosphere, which forms an ideal building block in your child’s pre-primary education. Group-differentiated approach: Although your children are placed in their agerelated groups, classroom management and structure caters for the individual. Individual emphasis is very important to
Toyland Educare and it is their belief that each child must be allowed to develop at his/her own pace. Within each class or group, smaller developmental groups are identified. This caters for each child being given input appropriate to his/her stage and rate of development. Classroom application: The nature of the classroom and its activity is dynamic, active and consistent. While some organisational structure exists, the child moves constructively from one activity to the next. Each activity provides the relevant expression and enhancement of the child’s particular needs. Grade R: Within the pre-school year, they offer a recognised Grade R programme that enhances preparatory reading, writing and mathematics. Extramural activities on offer are swimming, Action Ball, Catrobat-Kidz, soccer, ballet and speech and drama. For more information contact 031 – 201 1101 or e-mail toylandeducare@gmail.com.

Entrants are encouraged to write about anything that tickles their fancy, whether it is a non-fiction story (which could include an illustrated recipe book), the history of their family, biography or their favourite sport, or a fictional story – adventure, horror or fantasy – the world is their oyster. “At READ, we believe that literacy is fundamental to a child’s growth. We want to give children the opportunity to showcase their talents and at the same time encourage reading and writing at an early stage,” said Lizelle Langford, PR and Fundraising Manager at READ.

Peanut Butter Bliss Smoothie I’ll be the first to admit I was a step behind on the Nutribullet trend. After all, I have a blender and a juicer, what more could I need? Well, after receiving my little pocket rocket nutrient extractor – I’m stepping in line with everyone else and am under the Nutribullet spell!
this baby liquidises your whole fruits and veggies into a substance smoother than other popular blenders. I put my new baby to the test with this seriously delicious smoothie recipe. Bargain Books Book Reviews For Children • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3D Comic Sticker Book by Nickelodeon. This band of heroes in a half shell is back! Read about their battles with the bad guys, complete the scenes, finish the stories and add some fighting talk and sound effects with the 75+ stickers included. There is also place to create your own comic adventure and colour in. • Music All Around by Baby Einstein. This irresistible board book contains beautiful high contrast illustrations that are easy for babies (18 months+) to focus on while exploring a world filled with Baby Einstein animals. Little hands will love joining in the fun by pressing the sound buttons to hear the six classic melodies by Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. • My Busy Book: The Jungle Book by Disney. The new starstudded ‘Jungle Book’ hit movie screens recently and has proved to be a hit with young and old alike. Mowgli and friends are back and ready to keep kids, three years and older, busy with loads of action-packed fun! Let them enter the jungle that’s got fun, games and everything they’ll need with this storybook, 12 figurines and a play mat. For adults • Under The Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta. Inspired by Nigeria’s folktales and its war, this deeply searching, powerful debut shares the dangers of living and loving openly. Chinelo Okparanta’s richly told story is both intense and astonishing. This debut novel will pull you in and capture your heart in so many different ways. • The Death of an Owl by Paul Torday with Piers Torday. Paul Torday, author of bestselling novel and subsequent film, ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’, was working on this book right up until his death in 2013. His son, Piers, an award-winning author, completed his unfinished manuscript and there is no doubt that his father would be pleased. This poignant, strangely compelling and quirky story is a must read! • Work Like Any Other by Virginia Reeves. This starkly beautiful debut novel is a striking yet quiet story of love, fierce beauty and hard-won redemption. Virginia Reeves delivers a great piece of historical fiction that will reach deep into your heart.
