November, for me, means that the hay fever will hopefully subside, the weather will get warmer and the festive period is just around the corner! As I sit here in O R Tambo Airport, Jo’burg, writing this letter, I realise even more than ever just how much ‘family’ means to me and I’m sure you’ll all agree. As I waved goodbye to my beautiful children and husband earlier in Durban, my heart ached at the prospect of being away from them all for just over a week – even though I will be back before I know it (God willing!), I will still miss them dearly.

I am on my way to the UK to see friends and family, but mainly to attend the funeral of a very special and kind family friend. Sad times such as these make you step back and evaluate what life is all about, so please hug and kiss your loved ones, cherish them, love them, have fun with them and please don’t bear any grudges with anyone – life really is so very short.

Sisters with Blisters 2016

Insurance on us for a year.

For the first time in Durban, East Coast Radio and 1st for Women have teamed up to host the Sisters with Blisters protest walk against gender based violence. The walk takes place at Chris Saunders Park, Centenary Boulevard, Umhlanga on 20 November. South Africa has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world and the Department of Justice estimates that one out of every four South African women is a survivor of domestic violence.

Purchase an up!, Polo Vivo or Polo (excluding GTI) and receive 1 year comprehensive insurance.

Every year, from 25 November to 10 December, the world turns its attention to the plight of abused women. Much is done during this brief time to raise awareness, expose this social tragedy and campaign for equality, but is it enough? A bruise can heal in 16 days but for the survivors of abuse, the veiled emotional scars last a lifetime.

SCLEROTHERAPY

BEFORE

AFTER

Spider veins and larger leg veins are a common and unsightly problem. Especially females suffer from this condition due to a variety of specific factors – like pregnancy, genetics, sedentary lifestyle and hormonal impacts on vein formation. Two to three sessions of treatment may be required – but most problems of this nature are essentialy removable. These fine veins are generally very easy to remove by way of sclerotherapy – a safe and easy way of removing the small unwanted and unsightly veins that are visible on the lower legs. Lasers are generally ineffective for veins of the lower body – and it is limited to vascular problems of the upper body. Large varicose veins are removed by way of endovascular laser – which can be done out of hospital and under local anaesthetic. COMPLIMENTARY CONSULTATIONS FOR SCLEROTHERAPY FOR NOVEMBER ONLY. Have Yourself a Money-Light December Break

SUNCOAST

The big December summer break is just around the corner, and already plans are being made for holidays. But these plans cannot be made in isolation: they need to be attached to a budget. Wikus Olivier, debt management expert at DebtSafe, has some practical tips to ensure you can still make the most of your December break: Have a visible budget Create your December budget, print it out and put it up in plain sight (the fridge door is a good spot). The list must include all the break’s expected costs. Then list the amount budgeted for each item with a big and bold total at the bottom to ensure you know what your ‘December spend ceiling’ is. Get a piggy bank Now is a great time to start saving loose change for December. Put a piggy bank on the kitchen counter and get family members to join in. This activity can be fun and educational for young and old. This is a great way to start good saving habits amongst all family members. Share the load If the big holiday celebrations are happening at your house this December, then it’s time so start planning for sharing, not impressing. You don’t have to pay for everything to your budget’s detriment. Ask your guests to bring something to eat and decide on clever ways to lighten the gift load. A clever gift plan is a gift draw, where each person brings one gift and everyone then gets a turn to select a gift from the collective heap. Stick to the budget and game plan and you won’t have to worry about money and overspending. Visit www.debtsafe.co.za for more information. www.mumsmail.com

fresh simple cooking

Ingredients: • 1 plastic rounded container – about 2.5 litres • 1 cup water • 250g (2 cups) safari cake mix • 12 cherries, cut in half • ½ teaspoon nutmeg • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • ½ cup chopped nuts (pecan, macadamia, almond, cashews) • 400ml very fine crumbs of tennis biscuits • 3 tablespoons brandy/rum • 2 litre vanilla ice cream

imagine a world where meals just happen!

• hands on cooking courses for domestic employees • improve the skills of your domestic worker • easy, fun and tasty • situated in your area • private catering also available

Method: Place the water, cake mix, cherries, cinnamon and nutmeg into a saucepan and bring to the boil. When boiling, turn heat down to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Put in a mixing bowl and place in freezer to get cold. Empty the biscuits into a clean packet and crush them with a rolling pin until very fine. Add the nuts, biscuits and rum/brandy to the cold fruit mix. Mix well together. Put back in the freezer. Take the 2 litre vanilla ice cream out of the freezer and leave to soften. Take the round plastic container and line the inside with plastic wrap or tin foil, with the edges sticking out. Once the ice-cream is slightly soft, use a wooden spoon dipped in hot water to make an edge of ice cream around the plastic container about two fingers thick. Now fill the middle with the cold fruit and biscuit mix. Cover the top with another layer of ice cream and smooth until flat. Cover container with tin foil and put it in the freezer for at least 1 day. When ready to eat – dip the plastic container into hot water to unmould the plastic. Turn out onto a flat serving plate. Decorate with Christmas decorations and slice like a cake. Eat straight away or it will melt! Source: Danielle, 072 261 5192, e-mail danielle@pheka.co.za, www.pheka.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Christmas Cake Recipe Here is a delicious gluten and sugar free version of a Christmas cake suitable for real food enthusiasts or paleo lifestylers. The pudding: • 1 cup almond flour • 4 tablespoons desiccated coconut flour, unsweetened • 2 tablespoons xylitol • 2 tablespoons cocoa • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 pinch Himalayan rock salt • 1 cup mixed fruit and nuts • 2 eggs • 60g butter • ½ cup (125ml) buttermilk Preheat the oven to 180ᵒC. Select a round medium ceramic/glass oven proof dish – approximately 23cm in diameter and 5cm deep. Mix almond flour, desiccated coconut, xylitol, cocoa powder, cinnamon, baking powder and rock salt in glass bowl. Stir through with a fork until well blended. Melt butter and add to dry ingredients. Add eggs and buttermilk and stir with a fork until well blended. Add mixed fruit and nuts to batter and stir through. Bake at 180ᵒC for 15 to 20 minutes. The top should be browned and soft to the touch. The Sauce • 2 tablespoons (40g) butter • 2½ tablespoons Xylitol • ½ cup cream • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • ½ cup nuts and 1 handful of cherries Melt butter on low heat. While stirring, add the xylitol and melt through completely. Add the cream and vanilla extract and stir through. Allow the sauce to boil, then reduce heat and simmer for two minutes. You can either pour the sauce over the pudding while in the glass bowl, or tip the cake out onto a plate first. Pierce with a fork and pour the sauce a little at a time over the cake to soak in. Decorate the top with mixed nuts and cherries. Serve with cream. Source: Janita Bold, www.la-verdure.co.za. 21

Business Life

Motivation: What Keeps You Running Your Own Business? Starting and growing a business is a long road, with many uphill climbs along the way. While you may enjoy many aspects of being your own boss and building your own business it can also be lonely, tiring and at times even a terrifying experience. The question is: what is going to keep you putting one foot in front of the other when things get tough? Darlene Menzies, CEO of SMEasy, says that building a business is like running the Comrades Marathon: it’s a long distance race, not a short sprint and there are steep hills and lonely stretches along the way. To make it, you need to ensure you have a positive attitude and a deepseated belief in yourself from the get-go. You also need to learn to maintain this enthusiastic, optimistic mindset for the long haul, regardless of the challenges you encounter. One of the secrets to ensuring that you keep moving forward, irrespective of setbacks, is to acknowledge up front that setbacks are going to occur: it’s not all going to be roses. In business, as in life, it is as important to be realistic as it is to be optimistic. Mental preparation is powerful. Have a strategy for how to deal with the disappointments, fear and the loneliness that comes with building a business.

Place the seedlings in the pot. Fill the space around the plant with some more potting mix. Place the plastic pot with seedlings into the teapot. Use the glue to stick your chosen little bugs and decorations around the pot. Place your gorgeous new decoration somewhere visible in the garden, for everyone to go potty over. Start by choosing and marking out the spot for your edible garden. Remember that most herbs and veggies prefer full sun. Mark out the pathways between your beds to allow access for picking. Gravel or bricks are water-wise options, easy to walk on no matter what the weather and great for suppressing weeds.

Plant out your seedlings and seeds, remembering to follow the spacing guidelines to ensure healthy, strong plants. Staggering the sowing times will prolong your harvest so keep some seeds to sow later. Add some flowering plants to your veggie patch that can repel insects such as marigolds and wild garlic. Make some markers so you can remind yourself of what has been planted where! Once you have finished planting, it is helpful to make a yearly planting and picking chart so you can remind yourself of what you have planted when, and when to harvest different crops to get them at their very best. Next you need to prepare your soil. Time spent enriching the soil now will pay dividends later when it comes to picking your crops. Mix in a good amount of compost to give your soil a light workable texture that your plants (particularly your root vegetables such as carrots, radish and onions) will be able to grow through easily and gain nutrition. Fill your beds to just below the top edge.

Have Yourself a Posh Little Christmas Nothing makes the Posh team happier than setting beautiful tables! And with the soft ringing of Rudolf’s jingle bells growing ever closer, it would seem that some posh table tops are called for! Here’s a guide on how to create a simple, stunning table setting for this year’s Christmas season that is so easy to do, the kids will beg you for this task on Christmas day. • Create a blank canvas with a beautiful white damask tablecloth. • Instead of the usual table runner, add a fun element of silver angel hair (you can find this at your nearest florist) along the centre of your table. Nestle a large arrangement of your favourite white flowers in the silver angel hair in the centre of the table, with a few smaller arrangements on either side. The kids will have loads of fun putting the floral arrangements together! • Place candle votives along the outer edges of the angel hair. Instead of the usual dinner or tea-light candles, fill the votives with water and place floating candles on the surface. • Place some silver angel hair underneath clear glass under plates for each place setting. • Finish the look by tying a beautiful silver ribbon bow and name tag around each person’s napkin, and tuck the napkin ends alternately beneath the top and bottom of the under plate. Have a Posh festive season and blessed Christmas!

Varicose veins are large tortuous veins of the legs often caused by broken valves within the veins that remove blood from the legs to the heart. These valves commonly break down due to a family history, previous trauma or pregnancy.

Spider veins are small thread veins on the surface of the skin. They are most often a cosmetic problem, and are best treated by sclerotherapy. During sclerotherapy a chemical is injected into the vein using a very fine needle. Pollen: Not the Biggest Culprit Behind SA’s Hay Fever Woes

Order 2 Hot Heart Massagers with the Burning Desire candle and get 10% OFF the order!

It’s the height of the hay fever season, a condition which affects approximately 30% of South Africans, but pollen might not be the main culprit behind your nasal allergy misery. Dr Mike Levin, allergy advisor to Pharma Dynamics, says that for decades hay fever sufferers have been led to believe that their condition is brought on by the amount of pollen in the air, but there are a host of other triggers too. “Pollen could in many cases elicit a severe allergic reaction, but sufferers will be surprised to learn that their nasal allergies might not have anything to do with pollen spores. This is why pinpointing where and when an allergy occurs is vital.” According to Dr Levin, the most commonly inhaled allergens are: • Different types of pollen (from trees, grass, weeds and flowers) • House dust mite • Cat and dog dander • Cockroaches • Fungal spores

Dr Levin recommends that nasal allergy sufferers see a doctor with skills in allergy to perform a skin prick test or an immunoglobulin (IgE) antibody test, which will help to diagnose an allergy to a specific substance or substances. According to Dr Levin you can treat nasal allergies with antihistamines, which prevent histamine from attaching to your cells and causing symptoms. A decongestant can also be used to reduce the swelling in the nasal passages, “Hay fever symptoms however vary from person to person, but typically include an itchy, runny or blocked nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, scratchy throat, postnasal drip and/or fatigue,” he says.

The Surgical Screening Clinic

Know Your Risk for Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in South Africa. The risk for developing cancer is based on a combination of inherited risk factors and acquired risk factors. Screening programmes for breast cancer are used to try and identify pathology before it becomes clinically evident. Your lifetime risk should be estimated by your breast clinician. When to start, the frequency of your screening, and the methods available should be discussed, with the patient making the ultimate decision. For average life-time risk females – recommendations for screening include annual to biennial (two yearly) mammograms commencing between 40 to 50 years of age, a yearly clinical breast examination by an experienced breast clinician, and monthly self-breast examination. For elevated life-time risk females – screening recommendations are individualised based on the predisposition. Early detection and treatment is associated with an improved outcome and overall survival. Screen today for a better tomorrow.

How does breast pathology present? • Screen-detected (on mammogram) • Changes to the breast – lump, pulled in nipple, dimpling, dripping/oozing from nipple, redness/rash, skin changes What if an abnormality is detected? • Consult with your breast surgeon/breast clinician. • Remember, NOT all lumps are cancers. • Imaging and a biopsy of the abnormality needs to be performed to confirm the diagnosis. What is a biopsy and how is cancer confirmed? A biopsy is when a piece of the tumour is sampled (under local anaesthetic), and sent to the pathologist for an assessment. A biopsy can be done by your breast surgeon or some radiologists. Cancer is only confirmed by the pathologist. If cancer has been suspected or detected, you will need to consult with your breast surgeon. Contact: 031 – 573 2439 or visit www.durbanbreastclinic.co.za for more information.

The risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes increases if you have a family history. By 2025, it is estimated that 380 million people worldwide will be diabetic!

Children also need to be taught the importance of regular exercise, as this helps to stabilise blood glucose levels, which is important in regulating appetite and controlling obesity long-term. Special interest in Child Health

DO YOU SUFFER FROM

With firm, loving support of involved parents, a child doesn’t need to become the victim of a lifestyle of poor food choices, and as a result, poor health and disease. We are role models to our children in so many ways, and good nutrition and healthy food choices are an integral part of this. Positive involvement in a child’s diet is essential in steering children in the right direction in terms of healthy food choices. If children are taught to balance junk foods, sugary drinks and refined foods more effectively, and replace these with whole foods, that contain real nutrients that build the body and supply valuable nutrients, they will grow to be strong, healthy adults.

Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis (MS), an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. MS is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system. Today over 2.5 million people around the world have MS. Who gets MS? Most people living with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. There are an estimated 8-10,000 children under the age of 18 who also live with MS. Studies indicate that genetic factors could make certain individuals more susceptible to the disease, but there is no evidence that MS is directly inherited. It occurs more commonly among Caucasians, especially those of northern European ancestry, but people of African, Asian, and Hispanic backgrounds are not immune. Multiple Sclerosis South Africa KZN is hosting a fundraising auction on Saturday 19 November at Quo Restaurant in Gillits. The event starts at 11.30am and includes a 3-course meal and live entertainment. Tickets cost R250 per person. Funds raised will ensure their social workers and carers can remain employed. If you are able to donate items for auction, or if you would like to attend the event, contact Dee Munks on rosiemunks@telkomsa.net.

& Tinting Manicures & Pedicures • Spray Tanning Threading GelPolish • Luscious Lashes Eyelash Extensions The spray tan •isProfessional airbrush by a Make-up •applied Permanent Make-up technician – the application takes 10 minutes. The streak-free, water based nonsticky formula is easy to apply and very quick to dry, leaving skin glowing with a long-lasting sunless tan that looks incredibly smooth and natural on all skin types.

Lash extensions Lash extensions are enhancements designed to add length, thickness and fullness to the natural eyelashes. Specialised isolating techniques are used, where every single lash extension is applied to each natural eyelash to ensure a natural, elegant and fuller look which adds length and fullness to your existing natural eyelashes, ensuring you have damage-free lash extensions. There is no discomfort involved in the application and after the initial full set is applied, it is recommended that you have fills every two to three weeks to maintain the fullness of your lash extensions. Slimming The Lipo Slim Laser is the latest slimming and contouring system. It is designed to reduce unwanted fat without surgery. The laser penetrates through the skin to the hypodermis and makes the fat cells release glycerol, water and free fatty acids. The fat cell shrinks and collapses. The lymphatic system then removes the fatty liquids through your veins. The body needs to get the released liquids out through heat or energy in 24 hours to prevent it from turning back into fat cells – this is done through a FIR Sauna Treatment. They also offer Biominceur Body Wraps. Bloody Facial, Anyone? What? A bloody facial? Vampire Facelift? Has the world of anti-aging treatments now completely lost it? All the terms above refer to a treatment that well-known reality star Kim Kardashian made ‘famous’! It is a procedure called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment. It is a treatment whereby your own blood is prepared and re-injected very superficially into the skin to treat fine lines, wrinkles as well as scars and to improve skin tone and texture. This minimally invasive procedure uses the body’s own natural ‘ingredients’ to reverse the signs of aging and is hailed in the world of aesthetic medicine as the number one anti-aging procedure due to its regenerative properties. Any part of the body can be treated but the most common area is the face, neck, chest and hands. The treatment is especially useful for addressing fine wrinkles under the eyes and on the neck but can also help to improve acne scars and stretch marks.

PRP uses your own natural growth factors to boost production of collagen, it is safe and because it comes from your own body there is virtually no risk of allergic reactions or infection. This quick and relatively painless procedure renders remarkable skin rejuvenation results that are subtle and natural. Your aesthetic doctor may recommend combining this treatment with anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers to achieve a natural and youthful solution to your aging concerns. Here at The Timeless Closet, the client is free to shop without the pressure to purchase. A perfect shopping experience, if you ask me, that will ultimately leave my clients feeling satisfied, extremely happy and always coming back for more!” says Thilo.

I met Thilo recently and I immediately warmed to her. She was incredibly helpful, offering me things to try that I never would have tried on my own, and I found I was pleasantly surprised when I tried them on. I bought lots of gorgeous clothes and a funky red handbag too! But I think my best find was the ‘skinny summer leggings’ – they really do suck everything in and are so comfy to wear too! I even had my cousin ask if I’d lost weight, they were that good! Thilo’s trading hours are flexible, and she can accommodate working women after hours too. Breast Milk Bank for Abandoned Babies The La Lucia Baby House has recently started a breast milk bank for the babies in their care. In its three years of operation, the baby house has cared for 29 orphaned and abandoned babies. The home currently has six babies in their care and a total of 16 babies have already been adopted. The rest have been reunited with their families. Since breastmilk is proven to be the best form of nutrition, the health and well-being of these babies improves significantly. The immune benefits of breastmilk make it especially beneficial for those babies who are premature or HIV infected. The Baby House Breastmilk Bank is affiliated with the Human Milk Banking Association of South Africa (HMBASA) and therefore follows strict screening, pasteurisation and microbiological testing guidelines to ensure that the donor breastmilk is safe for the infants. All their donor mothers are first screened before their milk is accepted, to ensure they do not carry any risks. Any mother who is breast

feeding her own infant under the age of eighteen months and has extra milk to share can contact the La Lucia Baby House for screening. They appreciate any amount of breastmilk that can be donated – every drop counts! Once the screening process is complete, they provide sterile bottles in which to store the milk. The mothers freeze their milk and once all the bottles are filled, the home will collect the frozen milk from them. It is very important that the mothers express and store their milk using good hygiene practices.

Why Babies are Sleeping in Boxes For 75 years, Finland’s expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It’s like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it has helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates. It’s designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they’re from, an equal start in life. The maternity package, a gift from the government, is available to all expectant mothers. It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress. With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby’s first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box’s four cardboard walls. The tradition dates back to 1938. To begin with, the scheme was only available to families on low incomes, but that changed in 1949. Not only was it offered to all mothers-to-be but new legislation meant in order to get the grant, or maternity box, they had to visit a doctor or municipal prenatal clinic before their fourth month of pregnancy. So the box provided mothers with what they needed to look after their baby, but it also helped steer pregnant women into the arms of the doctors and nurses of Finland’s nascent welfare state.

In the 1930s Finland was a poor country and infant mortality was high – 65 out of 1 000 babies died. But the figures improved rapidly in the decades that followed. Many other countries have adopted this idea – maybe South Africa could benefit from a concept like this too! 6th Floor, The Design Factory 39 Station Drive, Morningside

What to Look for in a Good Education Savings Plan A good plan is one that that delivers on its objective, with the greatest amount of certainty, for any specified time frame. But how does it do this? It will take appropriate risk: Your investment choices must ensure you can meet your objectives rather than your tolerance for risk. This is influenced by your child’s age, the chosen level of education and therefore the time to your targeted objective. It will be diversified: No single event or negative outcome should permanently impair the capital (losses) and derail the plan’s chance of success. Funds or unit trusts are good options. It will be cost efficient: Use low cost funds and investment platforms to ensure more of your savings goes towards education. It will keep trading activity as low as possible: Trading increases transaction costs and your tax liability which ultimately lowers your real returns. It will be targeted: The more precise your

objective, the more accurate your strategy can be. Knowing which levels of education and even which specific institutions you want your children to attend will help you define your objectives more accurately. It will use realistic assumptions: When modelling your strategy, use reasonable return expectations, inflation estimates and match your contributions to those. Rubbish in, rubbish out is how it works in investment planning so err on the side of conservative. It will be disciplined: Even if you have set up an intelligent plan you will still need to be disciplined enough to stick with the strategy and give the plan a chance to work. The children spend their outside period in a shaded playground with a beautiful, state-of-the-art jungle gym for them to play on.

The school offers nutritious, preservativefree meals for the children, with healthy snacks throughout the day. The school is renowned for its beautiful heart, homely environment and oneof-a-kind concerts that are a big highlight every year. Slimy Goop Recipe Try this fun recipe to make homemade putty or goop with your kids. You can make it in advance for a party and let the kids have fun with moulds and utensils, or you can get them to each make their own bag of goop to take home!

Materials: • ½ teaspoon (5g) borax • ¼ cup (60ml) warm water • ¼ cup (32g) cornstarch • 60 – 90mls white glue • Food colouring • Durable, resealable plastic freezer bag Method: In a small bowl, dissolve the borax in the water and set aside. Combine the borax mixture with the remaining ingredients in a durable resealable plastic freezer bag. The mix will seem clumpy and stringy, but mix (by kneading the sealed bag) for several minutes until all the ingredients are combined. Let it sit for 30 minutes or longer. Give the cornstarch time to absorb the moisture before kneading the bag again. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes of kneading to gain a putty consistency. For younger kids: leave the borax out of the recipe. The goop will have a different consistency but it will be non-toxic if ingested. Borax is a laundry detergent booster and in not edible. For older kids: change the amount of cornstarch that you add – using all the ingredients you can create slime (use more glue and water, less cornstarch) and bouncy balls. Awesome Party Tips

Fun & Laughter with

TOM & Little Top Parties

Here are some insider tips and tricks to make even the smallest event extra special: • Purchase simple baked goods and add your own paper toppers, sweets or sprinkles. • Concentrate your decor in one area or on one table. This works better than attempting to theme an entire room or venue. It’s less time consuming and will cost you far less. • The choice of colour scheme is one of the most important factors in party planning. A beautiful colour pallet will easily bring a spectacular look to your event. • Your choice of theme is also an important factor. Something as simple as a marshmallow or donut can be enough to create a party around. • Party favours need not be pricey – a simple creative idea, packaged well, could easily do the trick. • When you aren’t able to hire a jumping castle or motorised rides, creative activities for the kids work well. Buy a sand art kit online, let the kids make their own mini pizzas and have a donut decorating station. These activities can keep kids entertained for two hours at least!

Sandbox Volcano

Machine Rental

Here’s a fun activity to do at home with your kids, or even as a demonstration at a party!

Popcorn

Materials: • Funnel • Empty plastic water bottle with a secure top • Baking soda • Squirt of whipping cream • Red food colouring • Sandbox (backyard dirt works too) • Vinegar Using a funnel, fill the water bottle halfway with baking soda. Then add a bit of whipping cream. On top of that, add the food colouring. Put the top on the bottle. Take the bottle to the sandbox and bury it so that just the neck of the bottle is exposed. Once the volcano has been fully constructed, take the cap off the bottle and pour in the vinegar. Watch the lava flow down the mountain and redirect any toy traffic that may be headed for doom! For younger kids: Adults or older kids can create what is inside the water bottle and younger kids can construct the outside. For older kids: The addition of whipping cream makes the eruption less violent and thicker. Older kids can experiment with various degrees of lava thickness for the perfect natural disaster. TIP: This could be done in the kitchen sink or bathtub, with a volcano mountain made of tinfoil.

Party Life

Choosing a Party Venue Being mom to a three-year-old has taught me many things – one is that choosing a party venue for your child’s birthday party is quite a daunting task! There are so many things to consider, but these are the most important points I consider when looking for a venue. • Safety: is the area secure and closed in so that no kids can go wandering off? I want the other parents to be able to relax without having to watch their kid like a hawk. • Value for money: shop around and find out what the going rate is for party venues so that you know you are not being overcharged. Consider also what is included in the price – is it just the venue you’re paying for, or is there snack and/or entertainment included? • Entertainment: You don’t always have to hire entertainment or equipment – I always look for a place that has age appropriate play equipment for the kids. I’m all for outdoor play and the kids love it. If there are jungle gyms etc., to play on, the kids will entertain themselves! • Food: does the venue provide food, and at what cost? Many places let you bring in your own snacks for the kids but require you to order adult platters from them, which can be costly. Work out if it’s cheaper to make or buy your own food, or for the venue to supply. • Space: look for a venue with plenty of space for the kids to run around and plenty of parking for the parents. Here are some great party venues to consider: • Durban Paintball and SWAT Laser Tag: The ultimate venue for an action packed
