For Adults: BOOKS: • The Consumer Protection Act Made Easy is a quick and easy read compiled by the reliable Neville Melville (the former banking Ombudsman). Exactly as the name suggests, this book gets to the point of the Act and presents the reader with a user-friendly guide, arranged in logical sections, to understanding the ACT. A little English boy and a French woman, meanwhile, both experience something that sets them searching for the type of knowledge George holds. Ingredients: • 2 cups cake flour • 2 eggs (beaten) • 90g butter • 250ml water • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp mixed spice • 1 cup castor sugar • 450g fruit cake mix • 11/2 cups whole and broken cherries • 11/2 cups mixed chopped nuts • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 1/4 tsp salt.

Method: • Combine fruit cake mix, sugar, water, butter, salt, mixed spice and cherries in a sauce pan. Bring to the boil and boil for five minutes. Allow to cool. • When cool, stir in bicarbonate of soda. • Sift the flour and baking powder together in a bowl, then stir in the cooled fruit mixture followed by the chopped nuts. • Stir in the beaten eggs and mix well. • Pour the batter into a greased and lined cake tin and bake in the oven at 180°C for 11/2 hours. The cake should be allowed to mature in a lightly closed tin for at least a month in order to obtain the best flavour. FESTIVE CELEBRATIONS Pamper Party Pleasure When Ingrid called to invite me to gatecrash their Pamper Party at Bella Donna, I bribed my daughter into letting me out of her class poetry reading she was doing at school on the same night. Yes, I know, terrible mother, but I figured (and she reassured me), that she only had one line anyway, and if she could take her Blackberry to school instead of her parents, the deal was sealed. Oh the things we do for pampering! My pampering session kicked off with a back massage, and then I moved on to a mani and pedi, and then a facial – we were all having different treatments at different times, on a rotation basis. I must confess that the facial was my favourite! Totally relaxing and indulgent – and sipping champagne while you are spoilt... there’s nothing better! Contradiction. Criticism. Abuse. You’ve seen it – communication with weapons. It’s an inability – or a conscious choice – not to speak well to one another. It is a characteristic of relationships heading for divorce. If the warring spouses want to speak to one another at all it’s usually to tell the other person just how wrong, blameworthy or unworthy he or she is! Marriages break down for a number of reasons. Poor communication might not have caused it, but the breakdown is usually accompanied by it. Amazing. You started out under the heady spell of romance. Intoxicated, you could not get enough, or do enough, for one another. You could talk for hours and hours – you had found your “soul mate”. Then, for some reason, it all changed. From being an angel, the other person became the symbol of unhappiness. “Spellbound” became “trapped” and you didn’t want to see the other person, let alone talk with him or her. Imagine how difficult it is to get people in that position to talk to one another and discuss the practical matters and disputes that go with divorce. They must carefully manage the many issues that arise when a complex relationship like marriage is dismantled. It’s not easy, but it is possible – with help. That’s what mediation is all about. It’s a bit like having a referee in the boxing ring – except that punching is banned!

Ensure the Money’s in the Bank These are the words of Nicole Van Wyk who works for local promotions company, Delbi Promotions. The company recently fell prey to the schemes of a fraudster and lost several thousand rands. Delbi was contacted via e-mail by a person called Jacob Adams. Adams sent a request for a quotation for 500 x 4G and 200 x 8G memory sticks. “I sent him the quote,” said Nicole, “and addressed it to Industrial Commodities Holdings. I sent him a purchase order and he pushed for an invoice. After receiving the invoice he sent proof of payment and I didn’t think to check the bank account. We sent the goods via courier. The following week we received an order for 1000 more memory sticks and Delia Biljon, who owns Delbi, became suspicious. She suggested we check the bank account and it was only then that we noticed that payment for the first 700 did not reflect.”

After submitting the case for investigation it appears that “Jacob Adams” has committed this fraud before. The company, Industrial Commodities Holdings, is a legitimate one and they are powerless to stop Adams from using their company information. Globe Flight Courier, the courier company who delivered the goods, reported that their vehicle was met by an unknown man (not Jacob Adams) at an address different to the delivery address. The man who received the goods looked like he had been beaten up.

There is now a revolutionary approach to anti-ageing through stimulation of natural processes. This technique is called Percutaneous Collagen Induction Needling. This process of needling involves using a roller with different sized needles attached to its surface. The roller is then rolled onto the surface of the skin several times. The aim of the technique is to cause microscopic breaks in the blood vessels deep below the surface layer of the skin. FASHION & BEAUTY Bras and Bedrooms The reason why adverts always have those black strips across people’s faces in the “before” and “after” photos is because nobody in their right mind would pose for their before photo and allow it to be published in a magazine! Everyone is happy to show their faces in the “after” shots for some bizarre reason? I was affectionately bullied into a “before” and “after” bra photo shoot by Liza Clifford (Professional Bra Fitting Studio), subsequent to our fun bra fitting session we had last month at the Mum’s Mail offices. I did however draw the line at her suggestion of the “beach” as a location, due to the bright and unforgiving “natural” lighting, and suggested The Bedroom in Umhlanga – a far more luxurious setting with muted lighting, which I hoped would be more forgiving. I must confess to having stage fright when Liza suggested I pose in ONLY a bra and petticoat from Karen Monk Klijnstra, but once a few feather boas (courtesy of The Bedroom) had been added to my ensemble, I really quite enjoyed the shoot – Nan West took the photos and she really made me feel at ease, despite me exposing my wobbly bits on camera. So here is the raw, unedited, un-Photoshopped “after” photo – there is no way you’re getting a glimpse at the “before”! PREGNANCY & BABIES Spending Time Together Moms and Babes is a play activity programme designed specifically for parents and their babies who are in the two to twelve month age group. Here is the first of her musings on being a “New Mom” for the mag, enjoy! In the past few months, slowly but surely Cooper who is 14 months old is becoming more and more defiant and determined to do things on his own terms. This, as I am sure you can appreciate, doesn’t roll with me. I have heard myself on a few occasions saying “Cooper! I am the boss of you!”, but this is somewhat of an ironic statement. Handling Concussion With the increased average size of youngsters playing rugby and an emphasis put on “winning the collision”, concussion is an area of concern for many parents. Concussion is a traumainduced change in mental state or a functional disturbance of the brain with no structural damage evident, due to a blow to (or the violent shaking of) the head. The biggest problem often isn’t the concussion itself, but rather the misunderstanding of what symptoms to look for and how to manage a concussion correctly. The first step in handling concussion occurs before a player even suffers a concussion as pre-season neurocognitive testing enables healthcare professionals to obtain an individual’s “norms” which can be compared against should a player suffer a concussion further down the line. Symptoms of Concussion: • Cognitive – memory loss, poor concentration, slowed reactions. • Physical – headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, sensitivity to light/noise, blurred vision, tiredness. • Emotional – irritability, aggression, depression, anxiety. • Sleep disturbances – sleeping more/less, difficulty falling asleep. Effective Management of Concussion: • Before the season starts ensure your child completes a baseline neurocognitive test. Then, if a player suffers a knock to the head, the referee or medics should stop play. • They will ask the player various memory questions and if they struggle to answer these they must be removed from the field immediately. The injured player must be assessed by a medical practitioner who will be able to advise on further management. • Only once all symptoms have completely disappeared for 24 hours without medication may they enter a five-day non-contact rehabilitation phase.

It is really rewarding to feed these birds and to learn more about your regular visitors. A bird bath will provide a safe and welcome place to wash feathers and to drink. Ideally this should be quite high up on a pole or a tree, to give some protection from crafty cats, but also in view of your own outside seating area or kitchen window so that you can enjoy observing. Your local nursery will be able to advise you on a suitable style as well as give you suggestions on suitable grasses to plant around the bird bath. Based in Durban North near the Golden Hours Market and School, we arrived at the venue not having had to do anything else except phone Roan to book the time and date (effortless!), and then arrive with tablecloths and the refreshments for the party. The kids were split into teams as they arrived, and given a blue or green Sunflower Fund bandana which I had bought from the Pick n Pay Hyper. Sergeant Ryan gave the kids (and the “big boys”) a talk about what they should and shouldn’t do with, and to, the laser guns, and with that they were off! It is impossible to say who had more fun – the kids or the men, but one thing is for sure, the men were VERY competitive and insisted I read off the top 5 for each round! It was quite surprising that sometimes the smallest players had the best scores – smaller to spot and hit!

LET’S PARTY! Party at The Italian Club Just the word “organise” seems to induce overwhelming and sudden lethargy in me, so you can imagine my reluctance to tackle a fun-filled birthday party for my five year old son. Finding a venue can be tricky. But I struck gold when I discovered that the Italian Club in Fairway, Durban North, caters for kids’ birthday parties in more ways than I could have hoped for! Outside is a spacious, semi-shaded deck overlooking the play area where parents can relax while still keeping an eye on their energetic offspring. Leading off the deck is a mini hall (a perfect haven if it rains) filled with little push bikes, a climbing wall, bean bags, mini tables and chairs and a table tennis table. The club also offers themed parties. My son was delighted with the “Cars” theme! For entertainment My Sand Art provided a sand art table, cards and coloured sand for all the children, who clamoured eagerly around it, keen to get started on their creations. This was a huge hit for the boys and girls and I recommend a sand art table at every party! The Italian Club offers a kiddies’ menu, caters for weddings and functions and has a full bar with two big screens. Don’t forget their Sunday Family Day lunch once a month, with extra entertainment for the kids. WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY White Mountain Festival This was my fourth White Mountain Festival and was by far the best - mainly due to the people who accompanied me this year, but also due to the way the festival was run. Pedro and Mandy once again did a fantastic job at somehow managing to keep the masses of rowdy people in check, and by the last day I can honestly say that I did not see one dirty toilet or one drunken fight. It was exactly as it should be - a buzz of happy campers dotting the beautiful scenery of the Central Drakensberg.

Known as the softer version of Splashy Fen, the White Mountain Folk Festival offers a far more relaxed approach, an environment that suits both the young and the old. This beautiful venue is the perfect backdrop for idyllic days listening to music, lounging by the lake and meeting like-minded people. The weather was temperamental but even the rain didn’t dampen the mood. The hot sunny moments were spent down at Pigeon Pools, a small drive away from the festival, where we all lounged on the rocks and spent hours mesmerised by the swishing sound of the small waterfall. The cold times had us huddled near the campfires, under the main music tent, or in Tom’s Tavern for a glass of wine and a roof over our heads.

WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY Giving Children a Future “Mommy why did you lose me?” asked little Brad* of his foster mum, Lesa. “How did you find me again?” These are the touching questions asked by a little boy who was recently fostered by Durban resident, Lesa, and her husband Anthony. Brad* was placed in the Ray of Hope Baby Home, a transition home in the Durban North area for babies up to the age of three. The home is a ministry of Immanuel Christian Church. Lesa, a member of the church, was not involved in the home at all but when her husband delivered some goods to the home he urged her to visit. She closed her company early one afternoon, and went to Ray of Hope intending to just visit and play with the babies. But Lesa and her husband fell in love with Brad* and began to develop a close relationship with him. The couple will soon begin adoption proceedings. “People are not aware of the home and the children,” said Lesa. “Many people want to give back but don’t know how because it doesn’t cross their paths. I urge people to go and find out about it – even if just to play with and stimulate the babies. Brad’s* future is sorted now – he gets to play in the park or go to the beach and he is so happy, he’s beaming.” Lesa is a mother to 23 year old twin boys so having a little one at home is like starting all over again. “But it is possible,” she said. DAD’S MAIL Krazy Kreatures Under My Surfboard Gambit, South Africa’s most famous dolphin in captivity, turned 40 recently and celebrated with a specially made gelatine fish cake! Shaun Tomson, one of the world’s greatest surfers, got to interact with the friendly animal on a visit to uShaka Marine World this year. Shaun has a soft spot for dolphins and has had many experiences with them while out surfing. Little wonder then that the mammals feature as one of the 26 crazy creatures in his new kiddies’ book Krazy Kreatures Under My Surfboard. The book is written in “Dr Seuss” type rhyme and is filled with delightfully illustrated animals. DAD’S MAIL The Art of Hand Bookbinding Durban resident Etienne Cilliers has a rich family history, one that extends back to the French Huguenots and the Boer War. Amongst his treasures are family journals handwritten by his grandfather who was the mayor of Zastron and who owned a farm there. His love of history and books has combined to create in Etienne an unusual passion – the art of hand bookbinding. Books as we know them, explained Etienne, go back to the 1400s when the Guttenberg press introduced the first hand-sewn books. With the invention of the sewing machine in the early 1800s, which resulted in books that were mass produced, cheaper materials were used and the life span of books greatly reduced. A hand-sewn book, however, is far superior to a machine-bound book of today and will last for many generations if properly looked after. Some of these ancient methods are what Etienne uses today to repair and re-bind books - old books, collectors’ books and books of sentimental value to their owners. Etienne begins his exacting work on an old book by removing the cover and then the existing mull (a gauze glued onto the spine of the book). The pages are separated into the signatures (folds of pages), properly mended and hand sewn if necessary. A new mull is placed over the spine and the spine is rounded – thereby creating a hollow back. Two layers of thick cardboard are used to create new covers and these are then covered in leather. Etienne uses upholstery, buffalo, calf, game or goat leather. Embossing the leather in designs genuine to a particular era is done after this. The result is a beautiful, lovingly preserved keepsake.
