Meet our cover stars the Klokow family
Win 10 x Movie Tickets! 15 000 FREE Magazines delivered every month!
Editor’s Life
Back to School, Yay! So most of the kids are now back to school and we are over half way through the year already. The kids are probably already stressed out with all the homework, sports and cultural activities that they need to fit into their busy days – I know that my daughter is. It took all of 2 days for her to feel overwhelmed again! But as long as we continue to be as organised as possible, it helps take the pressure off… Long may it last!
We have a fabulous competition this month – we would like to hear from you which of our advertisers you have used and why – you can be in with a chance to WIN 10 x movie tickets – perfect for a kids party outing! Without our advertisers, your favourite little magazine would not be possible so I do encourage you to use their services as often as possible, and be sure to mention that you heard about them through Mum’s Mail!
As I write this, we are freezing our socks off in Durban – our recent family camping trip to Underberg, right near the Sani Pass, was interesting to say the least. Getting into bed at night was like climbing into a fridge! I made sure that I stayed well and truly under the duvet until the sun was up the next day! But we did enjoy sitting around the camp fire in the evening and over breakfast, chatting and playing games.
Have you had a look at our new Facebook Community Group yet? If not, please do join the group to connect with other members. You can share tips and tricks with each other, recipes, craft ideas, events… just about anything really! Please check out your local FB group at ‘@Mum’s Mail Group JHB’. Happy Women’s Month! Enjoy.

The Canine Zone Pet Expo at The Glen Shopping Centre Exciting news for all dog and cat lovers! The Canine Zone Pet Expo at The Glen Shopping Centre is being held on 24, 25 and 26 August. The expo will feature products for sale as well as services for all pet owners, as well as interesting shows, demonstrations and talks. With sponsor Supreme Pet and various stands throughout the mall, exciting events will take place on the Saturday and Sunday, between 11am and 2pm on the rooftop of The Glen Shopping Centre. These events will include a grooming, obedience and trick demonstration from The Dog Club, the Joy Dogs, Top Dogs, Dancing with Dogs in Johannesburg as well as a carting and agility demonstration and a fun doggy fashion show. You can also come along to meet Adam the Rottweiler, star of the new Leon Schuster movie – Frank and Fearless. Children can meet sponsor Supreme Pet’s giant mascot dog, Spencer, who will be handing out treats throughout the mall. Talks will include advice on behaviour, nutrition and health care. Sharon Dale from Canine Zone magazine will be your host on the Saturday and Carmen Bekker, star of Die Hondehuis on DStv will be your host on Sunday. Canine Zone is the only printed and digital magazine in South Africa aimed exclusively at dog owners. The magazine has been on shelves since 2011 and is on sale at Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Spar, CNA as well as selected pet stores and veterinary clinics countrywide. The editor of Canine Zone magazine, Sharon Dale, saw a need for mini expos that are aimed at educating, entertaining and raising awareness, whilst at the same time, helping shelters to raise much needed funds for the thousands of dogs and cats in their care. Having hosted a very successful expo at Clearwater Mall in May, Canine Zone is now working with The Glen Shopping Centre to www.mumsmail.com

bring this exciting event to the southern suburbs of Johannesburg. With over one million dogs being euthanised every year, shelters throughout our country are jam-packed and are struggling to afford food, kennelling and vet care for the dogs and cats they take care of. Education is key to prevent unwanted litters and to stop puppy mill breeding of puppies with severe health problems, who invariably end up in these shelters. Animal cruelty is on the rise and one of the aims of the Canine Zone Pet Expo is to raise awareness and assist organisations such as The Animal Anti Cruelty League, who will also be present at the event. On the rooftop area, on the Saturday and Sunday, there will be various flea-market and shelter stands with wonderful products for every dog and cat lover. Some of the shelters include Dogtown SA, PawsRUs, Irwin Animal Rescue, A New Hope Dog Rescue, Adorabull Bull Terrier Rescue, Chihuahua Rescue, Friends of the Rottweiler and many more. Canine Zone magazine strongly supports adoption so come along and visit the shelter stands where you might even find a new family member. Please note that no dogs will be allowed at the event other than those taking part in the shows. The Canine Zone Pet Expo at The Glen Shopping Centre is set to become an annual event on the calendar. There are still a few stands available inside the mall as well as on the roof top area. For more information, contact Chelsea on advertising@caninezonesa. co.za. Shelter stands are available at no charge. Visit www.caninezonesa.co.za or follow them on Facebook: @CanineZoneSA.

Breastfeeding your new-born baby Your first milk (colostrum) may be small in quantity, but it is rich in everything he needs. As it passes through your baby’s digestive system, it lines his stomach and intestines to better defend against bacteria and viruses. Your colostrum also helps him to produce his first stool to excrete meconium (the substances ingested while in the womb). Why breastfeeding is important for your baby Your breastmilk is the only food designed specifically for your baby. It changes as he grows, to suit his needs. There are both short and long term benefits for your baby if you breastfeed exclusively for the recommended time of six months. • Breastfed babies have fewer and less severe upper and lower respiratory tract infections; they are less likely to need hospitalisation. • Ear infections are 3 to 4 times more common in infants who are not breastfed. • Breastmilk has factors which protect against urinary tract infections. • Breastfed babies are less likely to suffer from diarrhoea and gastroenteritis. • Constipation is much more common in formula fed infants. • Breastfed babies respond better to vaccines, as their immune system is more mature. • Breastfeeding is protective against SIDS, especially exclusive breastfeeding. • Breastmilk contains vital substances to help the development of your baby’s brain, retina and central nervous system, as well as growth factors and hormones. There are many more ways in which breastfeeding benefits mum and baby, and you can read the full article on www. mumsmail.com. Source: Anna Song, brand ambassador for Lansinoh® South Africa. 10
