Meet the Cover Stars
Our lovely cover stars this month are Lesedi Makwala and her mom, Ronnet. Ronnet is an IT specialist and Lesedi’s dad, Ofentse Machethe, is an engineer. They live in Johannesburg. According to her mom, Sedi, as she is fondly known, is the most amazing baby ever – she loves people and everyone loves her too! “When she is not feeling well we can all see it straight away. She is forever smiling and laughing,” says Ronnet. Sedi is 1 year and 7 months old.
Daddy says no she understands and stops!” laughs Ronnet. “She doesn’t like kissing anyone, but if daddy kisses me she will say “Mbhaa mama or Mbaa daddy” then kiss both of us!” Ronnet says the best part of parenting is raising the most beautiful angel, and having someone depending on you. “The smile she gives us, when coming home after work and then she gives you a big hug and kisses… oh my… heaven!”
Ronnet advises new parents to always be patient with their babies. “Connect with them always and give them your best love. Babies can sense your love and they will amaze you. Understand your baby. There is always a reason why a baby cries, and when you connect well with them you can know “We enjoy spending time together and love very well what they need.” to watch her play. My Sedi is very naughty, she is so stubborn with me, but the moment Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Mum’s Mail JHB is One Year Old! This issue is the 1st Anniversary for our JHB East Rand magazine – can you believe it?! We hope you have enjoyed reading our articles and competitions over the last 12 months and hope you have also made use of some of the services of our advertisers – they have lots of services and goods geared specifically for us busy moms with busy families!
All my local friends think we’re completely crazy to even consider camping in the Berg in the middle of winter but Andrew is very excited to get back out into the wild! He has many a plan for making potjies and bread over an open fire, cooking on the braai and goodness knows what else… At least I will get a break from cooking!
As I write this, we are heading into the middle of winter and my family and I are about to head off on 2 consecutive camping weekends – both will be completely opposite experiences! The first weekend we will be in Cape Vidal, where most of my time will be spent going for strolls on the beach and enjoying the warmer weather and the second weekend will be spent camping in Underberg, which apparently will be FREEZING!! We have our niece visiting from the UK and even though it’s the height of summer over there, we’ve told her she needs to bring her winter woollies with her.
We have recently created a Facebook Community Group for you so please feel free to join the group to connect with other moms in your area. You can share tips and tricks with each other, recipes, events, just about anything really! Check out the FB community group at ‘Mum’s Mail Group JHB’ and our FB Page @mumsmail.

Dr Des@Home: Depressed or Moody?
Anna Marie Song Brand amBassador Lansinoh south africa
Depression has become a common mental health problem. For some people, depression might only be episodic and overcome within a matter of weeks or months. However, for others the condition could persist for years, affecting their lifestyle and quality of life. If you feel sad for more than two days in a row for no obvious reason, experience altered sleeping and eating patterns or have any suicidal thoughts, you should speak to your general practitioner about it. Studies have shown that untreated depression leads to high inflammatory markers in the brain, similar to degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Applications such as “Daylio” help patients to keep track of their mood. Establishing a pattern, whether cyclical (which might be hormonal) or weekly (possibly hitting a low after a weekend of eating or drinking too much) will help your GP to diagnose the severity of the problem. If you have been on antidepressants in the past which led to side effects that you couldn’t tolerate, try to find out what the name of the drug was and mention this to your doctor.

There are many new drugs available with newer formulations and fewer side effects. A mother with depression often can’t equip her children with the necessary tools to develop a healthy self-esteem. A chronically tired and unhappy parent will lead to unhappy children. Depression can be treated! There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a patient after a month of treatment and seeing the light back in their eyes. Winter Skin Advice Winter winds, cold temperatures and icicles reduce our skin’s moisture levels and render our natural defences almost non-existent! These changes can affect our skin in many ways making it flaky, itchy, dry, red and irritated. Use Quality Skin Serums to Boost Vitality It is essential to make sure that your winter skin gets plenty of added moisture and has the proper balance of important ingredients to repair itself and retain moisture effectively. Skin serums that contain antioxidants can help. While both are beneficial, serums penetrate more deeply and deliver concentrated nutrients to your skin’s cells.

Yes, You Need Sunscreen in Winter When you’re wrapped in a scarf and shivering, the sun’s effect on your skin is probably the last thing on your mind. In reality, the sun can just as easily damage your skin in the winter cold as it can in the summer heat. Wear a quality sunscreen that protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays.

Exfoliation: Know When to Stop To reduce the dry, dull look of winter skin and allow moisturisers and serums to reach their target cells, it’s important to remove dead skin cells from your complexion. However, over-exfoliating your sensitive skin can make it more vulnerable to irritation or even damage its healthy cells. If your skin is getting drier and more irritated despite regular exfoliation, you may be doing it too often.
The facials will restore moisture and prevent flaking and ageing during winter. This package includes your 3 ESSENTIALS this winter, SIX Sensational Skincare Cranberry Exfoliating Cream, Vitamin Booster Oil and Anti Ageing Moisturiser.
Take a Well-Rounded Approach Maintain your skin care routine diligently; this will help ensure that you don’t end up back at square one. If you take a smart approach, your skin can look and feel great even when Old Man Winter delivers his icy stare.
