Cover Stars

Meet the Cover Stars

Our stunning cover stars this month are Chenay Louw and her daughter, Emily. Chenay is a senior HR Specialist working for a multinational company in food processing and packaging and her husband Jaco is a project manager working for a big property fund. Emily is almost eight months old and her personality is still developing, but she is already quite an “over achiever” – sitting at four-and-a-half months, crawling at seven months and managing to pull herself up to stand already at only seven-and-a-half months! “At the moment she is exploring every possible nook and cranny… she’s very inquisitive and just so adorable – her baby babble is getting cuter by the day,” says her mom.

a lunch, a walk around the mall for some shopping or visiting family. “Every night we bath her together as a little family and this is our special time to have some bonding and fun time,” says Chenay. As a working mom, Chenay has a lot on her plate. “It’s very rewarding to come home to that excited happy face after a long day at the office. It’s amazing to watch her develop into a little person day by day – from when we found out we were pregnant until today – it’s been such a special journey to watch her develop and grow.

Her nickname is “Peanut” because she started out that size on her first scan… I honestly never knew I could love another human being the way I love her. It’s just such an amazing feeling to be her mommy – such As a family they enjoy having quality time a privilege!” concludes Chenay. together at home and spending time Written by Sarah Mackintosh outdoors. Mother’s Day Ideas Picnic time! Take your mom/wife for a relaxing picnic at your local park or botanic gardens. Pack a delicious picnic lunch, or if you don’t have time, there are companies who sell picnic baskets and menus. Easy ideas are a rotisserie chicken with rolls, baby tomatoes and sliced cucumbers, with fruit juice and a flask of coffee or tea. Spread out a big blanket with some cushions or camp chairs and just have a relaxing time with your mom and family. The kids can run around playing or feed the ducks and birds. Weekend away Book a weekend away for the whole family. It doesn’t have to be far afield – just a change of scenery and pace can do wonders for a busy, stressed out mom. Show her how much you appreciate all her hard work and let her put her feet up for a weekend while you and the family cook and arrange activities. Let mom curl up with her favourite book, or do whatever relaxes her. Road trip Take a drive into the countryside for lunch and some sightseeing. You don’t have to drive too far to see some sights and landmarks in your own town or province, so hit the road and enjoy some fresh country air. Find a quaint country lodge to have a peaceful lunch, and then take a slow drive home, stopping along the way to see places of interest. Breakfast in bed Sometimes it is the small things that make a mom happy – like being served breakfast in bed. Spoil her with her favourite breakfast – be it pancakes, French toast or bacon and

eggs; whatever she wants! Don’t forget the coffee and be sure to clean up afterwards so that mom doesn’t have to do it! Alone time This is my personal favourite idea… sometimes a mom just wants to have some time to herself to unwind and do her favourite things without any interruptions. Dads – take the kids out for an entire day of fun, and leave mom at home alone. If she wants to relax in her PJs and binge watch Netflix, or sleep, or read her book, or have a bubble bath and then go shopping – it’s up to her, as the day is hers!

A Mother’s Love Like it or not, your mom is the person who loves you the most in the whole wide world – ALWAYS. It doesn’t matter what you do, how many times you mess up; that love is unconditional. She will do literally ANYTHING for you. I only realised this when I became a mom myself. That’s how my mom feels about me. Wow. This was a big revelation for me!

sacrifice a mom makes is unlike any other. She gives up a piece of herself when she becomes a mom and changes in more ways than you can imagine.

I remember when my son was born; looking into his eyes for the first time and feeling that instant connection, like I had always known him and always loved him – makes sense, since he is a part of me. But that overwhelming feeling of love has never left, and it never will. No-one can prepare you for this kind of great love that a mother has for her children.

Being a mom is hard, but also wonderful! You would do it a thousand times over just to hear them say “I love you, Mommy”.

Even though I’m all grown up now, my mom continues to look after me, and my son – in big and small ways. Once a mom, always a mom!

So this Mother’s Day, give your mom the best gift ever – just tell her you love her and cherish her. You will make her heart sing!

And to all the moms out there – remember I finally understood where my mom was you are amazing! Happy Mother’s Day! coming from… and appreciated all she has done and sacrificed for us. The kind of By Sarah Mackintosh.

Healthy Life/Beautiful Life

Asthma Awareness

Asthma is an airway disease presenting with chronic or recurrent coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. The above happens because the tubes in the lungs (the bronchiole) get smaller in diameter. There are two parts to this decrease in diameter: A bronchospasm, where the tubes constrict because they have a muscle on the outside, and inflammation and phlegm production on the inside of these tubes. This results in less airflow through these tubes and the wheezing we hear on examination.

There should be two different modes of treatment that an asthmatic should be using: One to treat the bronchospasm called a reliever, and another one to treat the inflammation: a preventer. As the name suggests, the preventer should be used every day and the reliever only when needed. Most preventers are inhaled corticosteroids. These medications are safe to use long-term, because they are only

active on the surface of the lungs and not in the blood stream at all! Should they enter the blood stream they are broken down by the liver immediately. Most patients who are diagnosed with asthma will get a treatment plan from their physician to use when they are getting a tight chest. This will help them to act and possibly increase treatment until they can see their physician. These red flags for asthma should not be ignored, especially in a patient or child that has never been diagnosed with asthma before: • Coughing at night • Coughing when exercising • Coughing in cold air • Coughing if laughing or crying • Getting repeated chest colds Asthma is a chronic disease that can be well controlled and should be treated chronically and with a structured treatment plan.
