We are also proud to announce the launch of our very own Mum’s Mail app, which is going to revolutionise the way you interact with us. It is a free download from your app store, and is available on Android and Apple devices. You can also scan the QR code on the Mum’s Mail advert on the opposite page, and it will take you straight to the app. So why would you need to download an app when you are already a fan on our Facebook page, visit our website regularly and read our printed mag monthly? Well besides “app” being the new buzz word (and we do like to be in fash), using our app will make reading our magazine online so easy, for those times when you can’t get your hands on the printed version – it’s literally at your fingertips, wherever you are. You can also enter our competitions via the app, search the directory of advertisers and services, check out what’s happening in your area, access our Facebook and Twitter pages, read all the latest news we’ve uploaded via our e-newsletters, check out photos from our gallery, post notices for free on the notice board and sign up for the newsletter. But best of all, you can take advantage of special offers via the “coupons” button that may not necessarily be available in the magazine.

Vision and Intelligence Vision and intelligence are more closely related than we realise. Fortunately, optometrists and scientists in vision have long recognised this fact, and for many years they have been engaged in research which has resulted in the development of many techniques for the improvement of your vision.

Vision training helps people to read faster and with better comprehension. It has been estimated that the average person Farhana Khan reads from 250 to 300 words a minute and Audiologist & SpeechTherapist comprehends about 50% to 70% of what Language PR.No. 8210276 he reads. Tel: 033 342 6881 80% of what we do and what we learn is attributable to the visual sense. It has been estimated that 75% to 90% of all classroom learning comes to the student via visual pathways. If there is any interference with these pathways, the student will probably experience difficulty with learning and athletic tasks. Today, with the overwhelming load of reading that is demanded in order to be educated, the eyes have to shoulder a disproportionate burden. Two-thirds of the energy used up in a day’s work is used up visually. In many instances the eyes are ill-prepared for the excessive demands of protracted close work and as a result visual errors and visual stress develop, with a subconscious avoidance response which might manifest as attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children Make Us Focused
King’s School
It’s often said that children are like a magnifying glass. Having children of our own brings into sharp focus areas of our lives we perhaps prefer to ignore. Children can highlight cracks in our relationships and our inner world that we weren’t aware of.

An educational heritage spanning 90 years King’s School is an independent primary school in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands offering: • Cultural, academic and sport scholarships OPEN DAY • Tuition from pre-school to Grade 7 • A feeder to high schools of choice 12 Sept • A nurturing, homely environment 09:30 to • Individualised learning in small classes 12:00 • Music, drama and team sports Come and explore our vibrant learning community, observe classes in action, meet the teachers, stroll through the beautiful grounds and join us in what we do best: providing a balanced, creative and academic foundation for your child’s future.
A wife and husband may suddenly find themselves in conflict over different parenting styles or over their traditional roles. The need for partners to re-contract their relationship is important after having a baby. Partners need to learn to communicate effectively while respecting each other’s different viewpoints.
The magnifying glass can also place a spotlight on the mother-daughter, daughter-in-law and mother-in-law relationship. A mother-in-law may have different ideas to her daughter-in-law with regards to bringing up the grandchildren. Daughtersin-law may also feel caught in between the two grandmothers’ different ideologies and try in vain to please both parties. New mothers can struggle to find their own inner “mothering” voice in this kind of climate. One of the gifts children give their parents is the ability to learn from their past and be better parents in the future. I believe psychotherapy is a valuable tool to use to support us in our journey of parenthood. Source: Tamryn Sprunt, Counselling Psychologist, 073 632 7269, tamryn. sprunt@gmail.com. www.mumsmail.com

The Importance of Analogue Time
eni Steam Railw Umg“WESLEY” SAR CLASS 19D 2685 ay Est. 1982
I have spent four years teaching at a small remedial and special needs school in Hilton, Capulum College. When it came time to teach my students how to tell analogue time, I could relate to the frustration many parents and teachers feel trying to help their children understand this complicated concept.

Current research has identified the posterior parietal cortex as being the primary location for tasks involved in clock reading, imaging, or drawing. This part of the brain is also responsible for playing a role in fluid reasoning, control of attention, working memory, and general intelligence. The ability to read a clock face is an important indicator of a child’s ability to understand multiple concepts, and to improve reasoning abilities. The ability to tell analogue time is one of the first indicators of a child’s reasoning capacities, and can predict future academic frustrations. To help my students understand and learn to tell the time, I developed my own teaching aid, now a product of SmartAlec Educational Aids.

The learning aid highlights the relationship between different parts of the clock face using colour association. All aspects of the clock relating to hours are in yellow, and all aspects relating to minutes are in blue. With the help of this aid my students began to understand and learn to tell the time.

Family Fun at The Sunday Tribune Garden Show This year’s Sunday Tribune Garden Show promises to be especially exciting for families with young children, as organisers of the Happy Earth Hall, Just Boutique Kidz Zone and the A-Maze-ing ABI School’s Hall, have joined forces to create a wonderland of fun activities for the children. Families who purchase the R20 Kidz Wonder Maps from the CHOC Kidz Kiosk will enjoy an exciting game of Hide and Seek by following Ntini the otter through The Happy Earth Hall, and onto the giant Maze in the ABI Schools’ Hall. But the fun doesn’t end there, as families can move on to the Kidz Zone Marquee and playground at the main arena with stage activities which include ‘I Spy a Bug in the Box’ (KZN Museum) and ‘Build a Bug Hotel’ workshop (Tanya Visser of SA Gardener). Families can also relax in the Kidz Zone marquee which will feature a Funky Food Bar and The Sunflower Fund’s Chari-Tea Garden. While parents drink tea, children can enjoy a playground with a giant water slide from Funzania or the Soft Play Zone, sponsored by Co-ords Kidz Party Boutique.
