Meet the Cover Stars

Nick and Katia Papadopoulos have been married for 15 years and have twin daughters, Maria and Alexandra, who are named after Nick and Katia’s mothers. “They are 13 years old and have decided that they’re old enough to do everything,” joked Nick. Although they are of Cypriot descent, they were both born in Zimbabwe and come from big families. When the whole family gets together, there are more than 60 people! Nick says this might be why he ended up in the catering industry. “My folks loved entertaining and we always had people in the house, so now when we ask who’s going to be there, “just the family” means about 60 people!”

Thankfully both Nick and Katia have flexible businesses, so they can spend time with their girls. They both manage to attend all their daughters’ school functions and they are on the parent association at their school. Katia is an independent distributor for Nu Skin Enterprises, an anti-ageing and wellness company. She is also vice-president of the Umhlanga Women Achievers, a networking organisation. Nick has a catering company, Eat Greek Caterers, which he owns with his business Partner, Eric Edwards. After 10 years based at the Hellenic Hall, Eat Greek has been offered an opportunity to move over as official caterers to the Greyville Exhibition and Events Company, based at Greyville Racetrack. “After 24 years as Eat Greek we will have a name change and will soon be known as Greyville Caterers powered by Eat Greek. This is an exciting move and we look forward to the next chapter,” said Nick.

Is The Customer Always Right?

coaching with Be what you LOVE to be. Be what you WANT to be. Be who you are MEANT to be.

From a consumer’s perspective, the answer is yes. We have all been victims of poor service delivery at one time or another.

Book your FREE 1 hour session to explore how you can take action NOW for a better, more positive you.

At last year’s Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg, I purchased an outside patio set. I was promised delivery within four to six weeks. Ten months later, I have still not received my goods. The harsh reality is that I have been scammed in an almost legal way with no option for recourse, including that of help from the Consumer Protection Act.

The irony is that we all have an understanding of what we believe is fair. Sadly our fairness is often one-sided, having no concern for others. I, as a funeral director, walk alongside grieving families and endeavour to lighten the load as much as I can. I am called to go the extra mile every day and can say the reward is all mine. I can’t take away the hurt, but also don’t have to put stumbling blocks in the way either. Where a client has not been entirely satisfied, I will always attempt to remedy the situation. As your coach, Andrea Moore-Boyle will remind you of your strengths, help you to feel better about yourself and give you valuable feedback on your thoughts and behaviour to support you in moving forward. The focus is on positive change; stating “this is where I am now, what do I want next?” AMB Life Coaching proudly offers a three-tier aid to assist families and individuals who need to make a change in their lives. The main thrust of the business is life coaching; this is a one-on-one appointment with clients who require guidance and clarification in dealing with: • Emotional crisis situations – relationship anger and pain management and resolution. This is very common place and can range from employer/employee problems, immediate family to extended family and spousal conflicts. • Teenage/parental issues.

The training is for individuals as well as groups. They also offer an InfoLife Biometric analysis. InfoLife provides a skills and personality test based on modern fingerprint analysis. The test is completely non-invasive, non-biased and is not time dependent, as fingerprints do not change. With an accuracy level greater than 92%, the InfoLife test covers topics such as career guidance, education, sports selection, health, individual characteristics, physiological characteristics and temperament. The outcomes will provide you with information about yourself that you can use throughout your life. Contact: Andrea Moore-Boyle on 083 679 9969 or andrea@amblifecoach.co.za.

Free Love?! Ah, I remember the sixties. I really ‘got’ the music and loved the idea of an all-inclusive society, but not the ‘free love’! More than forty years later, I deal with the results of broken relationships, many of which start off with a frenzy of ‘free love’. The poor addicts of this illusion eventually discover that nothing in life is for free, not even love. Young people (and older ones, too), lose their sense of reality when they are overcome by the ‘love bug’, also known as romance. You know the sensation – when you are in love, a kind of euphoria takes over. It cancels your fears and removes your sense of self-protection. You will do anything for the other person, who you see as being sent by the heavens, as ‘the one’ for you. It’s a fact - the hormonal surge actually disables your sense of judgment. Many people, overcome by this love bug, do really crazy things. They leave their existing spouses, desert their children (I have even seen mothers leave very young children to go off with another guy), and one of the worst things – they borrow and spend money they can never recover. People leave jobs and spend their pension money. They take out loans, draw against bonds, borrow from parents or sell their inheritance. And it mainly goes to waste. Then, they borrow more to try to repay the loans previously taken. Next, they will need money for legal fees, because really deep financial trouble often leads to domestic problems and divorce. Free love? No – it’s usually really expensive. Written by Roger Knowles, Attorney, 031 – 563 1238, 082 892 9752, www.rogerknowlesattorney.co.za. 23

Flapit – A Customisable Social Metrics Counter Flapit is the first physical counter to connect with all major social media platforms. Inspired by the iconic 1960s split-flap design, Flapit is not only easy to use and fun to watch, but also a powerful, interactive marketing tool. Flapit was first released in London at the end of last year and became an instant success and is now available in South Africa for the first time. With nearly two thirds of customers saying they are more likely to trust a business with a social media following over a business without one, Flapit allows brands to show off social metrics (such as likes, followers and checkins) and encourage customer engagement, helping bridge the gap between online and offline environments. With six alphanumeric split-flaps, Flapit can display metrics up to 999 999 alongside pre-installed logos for one of eleven leading online platforms; Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yelp, Instagram, Google+, Foursquare, Swarm, Weibo, Dianping, VKontakte and Google Analytics. When not showing a logo, the counter can display metrics of up to 9 999 999. Flapit is designed for business and can be placed anywhere: in a store window, on display at your agency, or on the wall of your restaurant or hotel. It’s also incredibly easy to customise, allowing brands to experiment with Flapit as they see fit. The counter can be ordered online using a credit card or via email, with payment through EFT, at a cost of R4 199 (excluding VAT). Email orders can be sent to sadistrib@flapit.com. What about Meera Written by Durban author, ZP Dala, What About Meera is a colourful story set between Dublin and Durban. Dublin becomes a refuge for Meera when she flees her toxic marriage in South Africa. In this faraway city she starts a new life, working at a school for autistic children. But her psyche is damaged and she spirals into a doomed relationship with the father of one of the children. Their obsessive affair uncovers frightening truths about Meera’s childhood in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Fuelled by alcohol and dark memories, Meera commits a horrifying act and is ostracised from the world where she thought she’d find happiness. To take control of her life she must stand up for what she believes is right – even if it means turning her back on the people she loves.

Healthy Life

Trouble Falling Pregnant? One in seven women has trouble falling pregnant. 30% of these cases are due to fertility problems in the male, 30% to fertility problems in the female and 40% are due to unexplained causes or multiple factors involving both partners. If you and your partner have been having unprotected sex for a year, then it is wise to consult with your GP to discover why you are not getting pregnant. There can be many reasons why women struggle to fall pregnant: • Age: the older you get, the more difficult it is to fall pregnant. • Endometriosis: when tissue grows outside the woman’s uterus. • Poor egg quality: where the quality and number of eggs produced by the woman’s ovaries declines significantly with age. • Polycystic ovarian syndrome: where the follicles in the woman’s ovaries do not develop into the mature follicles needed to release eggs; • Tubal factors: where the woman’s fallopian tubes stop the man’s

sperm from getting to her egg and also prevent the fertilised egg from getting to her uterus. • Ovulation problems: where a mature egg does not develop in the woman’s ovaries. Fertility problems may also be evident in a man, such as ejaculation problems, irregular sperm and blockages. Sperm production can be affected by smoking, drinking, taking drugs, sexually transmitted diseases and excessive heat, such as taking hot baths. Childhood diseases such as mumps and having a history of injuries to the testicles can also play a role. Women who are generally healthy have a better chance of conceiving, so ensure that you and your partner eat nutritious foods, reduce your stress, stop smoking, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and decrease your alcohol intake.

What Exactly Is Sciatica? Your legs and hips receive their nerve supply from the nerves that exit from the lower back. Many lower back conditions, such as slipped discs, spinal degeneration or a loss of the normal shape of the spine can put pressure on these nerves. When these nerves are pressured they can become irritated and damaged, and as a result you may feel pain, numbness, tingling, pins and needles and weakness in your buttock, leg or foot.

We look for the cause of your problem and then help you correct it.

If you have suffered with sciatica you will know just how painful and frustrating it can be. One day you have a sharp pain shooting down your leg and the next day a numb foot, and then just when you feel like you are getting better it comes back worse than before. The common approach is to take painkillers and hope the pain goes away, however this will not fix the cause of the sciatica So how do you fix the problem? The first step is to have a thorough examination to determine if you do have sciatica, and what the cause of it is. Your chiropractor may need to take some x-rays, or send you for an MRI scan. Once the problem has been located a treatment plan can be developed to correct it. Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve sciatica by taking the pressure off the nerves, so that these nerves can heal naturally.

Stérimar® Sea Water Nasal Sprays

JULIE A. CARDONA & ASSOCIATES

Babies have tiny, narrow nasal passages that can easily become blocked. This causes discomfort and difficulty during breathing and feeds. Stérimar® offers two products which are tailored to children’s needs: Baby Nasal Hygiene and Baby-child Blocked Nose (from three months of age). Nasal Hygiene is a preservative-free, isotonic* sea water solution with minerals and trace elements, ideal for gently cleansing the nasal passages without harming the nasal mucosa. One spray in each nostril two to six times per day, for infants from birth. Blocked Nose is a preservative-free hypertonic** seawater solution that has been specially developed for providing gentle relief from nasal congestion. One spray in each nostril two to six times per day for no longer than seven to 10 days, for infants from three months. Advantages of Stérimar® paediatric products: • Protective collar tip which prevents the nozzle from being inserted too far into baby’s nose, reducing the risk of injury. • A non-return valve which ensures the solution remains aseptic. • A gentle, micro-fine spray which ensures the solution remains in contact with the nasal mucosa. • May be sprayed at any angle or used in any position. *An isotonic solution contains the same concentration of salt as that of human body cells. **A hypertonic solution contains a higher concentration of salt than that of the body cells, which allows for decongestion of blocked noses. Women’s Health Checks PAP smears and mammograms are words that can send even the most stalwart woman into a cold sweat. It’s not surprising then that most women dread their annual check-up. Here’s why going for your PAP smear and mammogram should be your first priority. PAP Smears: A PAP smear is a scraping from the cervix that detects abnormal cells with cancerous potential. This means that these cells can be removed, either using laser or surgery, before cancer develops. Smears are uncomfortable and invasive but the whole procedure only lasts a few minutes and finding a good and empathetic healthcare professional to perform the smear can help to make an unpleasant experience bearable. PAP smears should be done annually from the first year of becoming sexually active. Mammograms: Mammograms are breast scans that help to detect suspicious breast masses, often before you can feel them. If a breast lump is found, a mammogram can assess the likelihood of that lump being cancerous. Routine screening mammograms are suggested annually from the age of 40 years. Contrary to popular myth, mammograms do not increase the risk of one developing cancer by squashing the breasts, and recently certain centres have started using digital mammography, which is a far more comfortable procedure than the previous method. If there is a strong family history of breast cancer, breast ultrasounds are suggested below the age of 40. Both PAP smears and mammograms can detect cancer early and potentially save your life. If you take a moment to think about that statement, suddenly a few minutes of discomfort doesn’t seem so bad. Do a good deed for yourself and book your appointment today.

KZN Farmer to Attempt World Record Ocean Paddle for 100 Smiles Adventure enthusiast and local KZN sugarcane farmer, Kyle Dohne (28), will attempt to break the world record for the longest distance paddled non-stop in the open ocean in 24 hours, to raise awareness for the Miles for Smiles Foundation – and at the same time hopefully give 100 children a smile of their own. The record of 196km was last set in 1986 by America’s Randy Fine off the coast of Florida. Part of Kyle’s journey will involve paddling for five days during daylight hours between Maputo and Durban, with the recordbreaking attempt taking place on one of these five days. In what promises to be an adventure of a life-time, Kyle’s journey will also be the first documented paddle between these two cities’ ports which he hopes will raise awareness and at the same time raise enough funds to enable 100 operations to correct cleft lips and palates of 100 children.

Kyle has set his goal at raising R500 000 which would mean 100 operations for children born with cleft and lip abnormalities. Cleft lips and cleft palates are the fourth most common birth defects in the world and are typically corrected shortly after a baby’s birth. However, for many children in rural areas, medical treatment is not available. Often these children cannot eat, speak, or even breathe properly. Due to low selfesteem, as well as feelings of isolation, these children often live as social outcasts.

My Renaissance As a working mom, I simply don’t have two hours a day to spend in the gym and that’s why I’m delighted to have discovered My Renaissance, bringing you the latest fitness and toning technology from Germany. One 20 minute workout is equivalent to five hours in the gym! Using Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS), in a training session with a personal trainer, gives you a workout you cannot duplicate in terms of efficiency, contraction time and results. Your entire body is trained simultaneously and each muscle group is worked at an intensity you can handle, regardless of your current level of fitness. EMS training is excellent for fat loss, strengthening, toning, rehabilitation, pain relief and endurance. Previously only available to celebs and top Olympic athletes, EMS is now available and affordable to you. Also used to treat cellulite with phenomenal results, the EMS activates the muscular and connective tissue which leads to better circulation and the reduction of superfluous fat cells, resulting in a firmer, tighter body. You can book 10 treatments (30 minutes each) for R1 200 and no contract is required. What a great Mother’s Day gift idea! This speeds up the conversion of calories into heat, resulting in the breakdown of fat into energy, reducing fluid retention, detoxifying the body and ultimately resulting in measurable inch and weight loss. Infra-red heat therapy is also used to improve blood circulation and lymph drainage, helping to eradicate cellulite and flush toxins from the body. Skin And Skincare Product pH – What’s The Big Deal?

skin care & day spa

The human body is host to an active ecosystem and, in much the same way as you need bacteria in your gut to stay healthy, your skin needs good bacteria to maintain optimum health.

Contact us for our Mother’s Day Specials! GIFT VOUCHERS AVAILABLE

There are approximately one trillion bacteria from more than 1 000 species living on your skin. Many species are beneficial. Some of them are permanent while others are transient. These microbes are affected by weather, exposure to light, stress levels and cosmetic products. Your skin maintains some control over the microflora on the surface by regulating its pH. pH plays a key role in the activity of the skin’s flora as a natural defence against harmful microbes.

• Laser Hair Removal • Laser Skin Tightening • Carboxy Therapy • 3D Eyebrows We offer a full range of beauty treatments

Esse is a skincare line that considers the skin’s microbiome. Its goal is to boost the number of beneficial bacteria to make sure that the harmful version can’t colonise on your skin. This is in contrast to the “kill them all” approach of many products on the market. Many brands pay attention to the pH of their cleansers but, because most emulsions become less stable at low pH, moisturisers are often not in the optimal range. Esse takes great care to keep the pH consistent at 4.5 across the whole range.

Due to the combination of two active tanning ingredients, DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) and Erythrulose, the tan lasts longer, fades evenly and does not streak. This unique combination results in a two phase tanning system which ensures that the tan develops over the normal six to eight hour period and gives you the base colour. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the second phase, the tan will continue to develop to reach its full intensity.

Childline Highlights Child Protection Week

Fatima Randaree Thandar Cell: 083 786 0538

Childline KZN provides a 24-hour helpline (08000 555 55), providing crisis counselling and supportive services to all children and adults in distress in the province. Therapeutic services are offered to sexually abused children and the Siyakhanyisa Outreach Programme is a preventative programme that is school and community based. A training department designs programmes on children’s issues and domestic violence, which are marketed in communities, and life-skills programmes are conducted with the youth with a view to empower them to become employable. Childline continues to advocate and develop capacity on children’s rights. Child Protection Week is commemorated annually from 24 May to 31 May. The theme for Child Protection week is ‘Working Together to Protect Children’. Parents are encouraged to become more vigilant with care and supervision of their children at all times. Child protection tips for moms • Every parent has the responsibility and right to know: where your child is, who they are with and when are they expected back. Teach your child to inform you of changes in their schedule. • Teach your child and prepare them (via role-plays) for peer pressure situations. • Your child needs to know: what is and what is not appropriate touching, not to be embarrassed to talk about anything, what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. They must tell if anyone is behaving in a way that worries them. They must refuse to do anything which they feel is wrong or frightens them. They should know the difference between good and bad secrets. • Teach your children of online dangers and place your PC in a common area. Remember, moms, childhood does not last forever, so enjoy all the good things about your children! www.mumsmail.com

Why Invest in a Sheepskin for Your Baby? Jardineria’s sheepskins are made from African Merino sheep; the best sheepskin in the world and renowned for its powerful benefits that help calm and nurture babies. Owner, Deanne Mackintosh, has researched and found what she considers to be the softest and silkiest sheepskins available. Moms will love that sheepskin is made by nature and is far superior to baby’s wellbeing than any synthetic fibres. Sheepskins, unlike synthetics (e.g. polar fleece) breathe, never smell, are flame retardant and have excellent insulating properties. Besides being the most luxurious play mat or bedding your baby will ever lie on, it has some incredible natural properties. • It is dirt and bacteria resistant and has self-cleaning properties due to its lanolin content. It never holds onto odours and is considered hypoallergenic. It is also very easy to clean and can be machine washed. • It is temperature regulating; it keeps baby warm in winter and cool in summer, helping your baby maintain a stable body temperature. It may seem strange to use a sheepskin in summer, but it actually has a cooling effect. • Jardineria’s sheepskins are soothing and healing and perfect for babies with sensitive skin or prone to eczema. • Sheepskins are kind to the environment as they are 100% biodegradable. They are also a by-product of the meat industry, meaning no animal is killed specifically for its skin. If cared for properly it can be reused for years to come and won’t lose its nurturing and healing benefits. If you want to buy a sheepskin, make sure it’s from Jardineria.

Keeping Your Kids Safe Online As a parent you do your best to protect your children from the things they shouldn’t see or do online. There are ways that you can keep your children safer online. These are a few insights into what you can do to improve their safety. First and easiest is to enable “Safe Search” on Google on the family computer or tablet. Or directly on the child’s device. This will reduce the chance of inappropriate content being delivered by an innocent or otherwise search. (In Google: bottom right – Settings – Search Settings – Filter Explicit Results). Second and more comprehensive is the installations of applications or apps that can offer varied levels of protection on phones, tablets and computers: • Apps such as Qustodia (www.qustodia. com or from the app store) provide a broad range of features. These include preventing searching of inappropriate content, preventing use of inappropriate applications, monitoring the use of the device and monitoring of social networking. Qustodia also sends you a daily e-mail listing the applications used, the time spent and the “friends” contacted on social media. • AppLock is an example of a different type of application that allows you to restrict access on your device. It allows you to restrict access to certain photographs, videos, settings and applications. This is very useful on a family device or one your children borrow often. There is no way that you can be everywhere and protect your child from everything but there are ways to improve their safety. SA’s First Dedicated Baby Shower Gift Registry You know the feeling of receiving duplicate or unwanted gifts? Create an online baby shower gift registry with My Baby Registry to ensure this doesn’t happen at your baby shower. Getting ready to welcome the new addition to the family is exciting, but can also be very stressful and overwhelming. At My Baby Registry they understand this and have created a convenient and simple way for new parents to let their family and friends know what they really want for their little one. They are based in Cape Town, but they deliver nationwide. Founder, Tonia Zorbas, said the idea came along when she entered the ‘friends having babies’ phase of her life. “At first I had no idea what to take to baby showers, not having had a baby of my own, so I wanted to solve that problem. I chatted to a few moms and they loved the idea, saying they often received the same gifts and ended up with enough blankets to start a blanket store. So My Baby Registry was born.”

Toys Suitable for Your Toddler: 13 Months to Two Years Having mastered walking, a child of this age will follow you around imitating what you do and will look for items that will challenge his manipulatory abilities. He will also now start saying more words and understands many more than he can say. Books are a great source of joy to this age as they can understand the story and know what’s coming next – he will often want to hear the same story over and over again.

Santie 079 887 8322 sales@pottz.co.za www.pottz.co.za

Stacking rings and nesting beakers will encourage dexterity and spatial visualisation, teaching him about sizes. Push and pull toys and carts with rigid handles to load and unload are recommended. Sorting buckets with basic shapes will teach shape recognition and encourage hand eye co-ordination. Toys that encourage imagination are appropriate for this age. Tea sets for boys and girls, dolls, brooms and mops. It’s important not to gender stereotype them at this age. Tunnels are a wonderful birthday gift as they bring hours of fun to the mobile toddler. A must have for this age is a set of wooden blocks; it takes a lot of manipulation before they learn how to stack them. The skill involved in placing wooden blocks differs from that of using a plastic interlocking block. Make a shape sorter using an old formula tin. Cut a circular hole in the lid and add some practice golf balls; the ones with the holes in. They love to post these. Once they have mastered the circle, do the square and then the triangle. Memorabilia Bags

Karin Visagé

Tennis School

Memory and memorising is a skill that can be used when children are playing and learning. A little fabric bag with a drawstring makes a simple hold-all for a few items to be used for a memory game. Mum can make a bag from a scrap of fabric or even use a box as an alternative. Fill the bag with some selected items found round your home. Things like a large button, a small block, a cork, clips and a spoon and so on. You can have fun choosing the items with your child. Put the items on a tray then after a minute cover them with the bag. Ask your child to draw (or write) the items he remembers.

• Private & Group Coaching • Beginners, Intermediate & Advanced • Pre-school Programme 4 - 5 Year Olds Durban North 083 253 7714 031 - 563 3208

Memory bags can also be used to play ‘touch and tell’. In this game you feel the item inside the bag and describe it for others to guess. This is excellent for vocabulary development! Take your bags on holiday for fun games in the car. Memory bags help children of all ages to develop memory skills – a vital aspect of learning for all kinds of academic tasks and for day to day living. We remember: • phone numbers • counting and number skills • spelling and reading words • historical facts • birthdays and special events (don’t forget mum’s birthday!)

Naturally Baby is an online store dedicated to selling both mum and baby gear.

Our lives are surrounded with memory moments and it is a great idea to help children train their memories while having fun using a simple bag of random items found round the home.

Importance of Infant Massage Touch is the first sense to develop in utero, the last to leave the body and the only sense without which we could not survive. It is the very nature of touch to be a powerful communicator. As the first language your baby understands, it is invaluable to communicate confidence, a positive self-image and respect. The practice of infant massage has been around for thousands of years and in many cultures it is a parenting tradition passed through generations. The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM), founded by Vimala McClure, is the only association in the world solely dedicated to baby massage. The safe and effective massage routine combines Swedish and Indian massage therapies, reflexology and yoga and is taught by Certified Infant Massage Instructors, like Lisa Townend of Holistic Baby, in over 70 countries of the world. Infant massage naturally includes all the elements of bonding and promotes secure attachment. Other benefits may include the early involvement for dad, improved sleep and the ability to calm oneself. Regular massage may stimulate learning ability and relieve gas, colic, constipation and teething discomfort. During the five-week course you will be guided to read and respect your baby’s cues and to respond to their needs accordingly. Classes are relaxed and hands-on, either one-on-one or in small groups, with the objective of learning infant massage, discovering relaxation techniques, exploring new knowledge and engaging in discussions. Parents with babies from birth to a year are welcome.

Kidz Online is an exclusive crèche/educare facility that offers state-of-the-art service, utilising modern technology. They have designed a website which will enable parents to watch their child at work and play. Their objective is to allow pupils to discover their potential by giving them the best learning material, educational training and equipment. Their vision is to provide children with professional, reliable and effective education. They strive to become the benchmark in the pre-school sector by providing a service like no other. The core of Kidz Online is to share their passion, diligence and expert knowledge with the pupils. Psychological Life Coaching and Logotherapy: Techniques Psychological Life Coaching and Logotherapy (PLCL) are a combination/ adaptation of three types of disciplines; positive psychology, logotherapy and life coaching. A combination extracting the crucial elements from each will have a profound effect on the psyche. Positive Psychology: Social and behavioural sciences play a significant role between Grades 7 and 12. Young adults can express a vision of the good life that is empirically sound and have a basic idea of what actions lead to well-being and happiness. However, they may not be able to identify how to achieve this. The use of positive psychological techniques aims to increase well-being through the development of positive feelings, cognitions and behaviours. Logotherapy: is a form of existential analysis in which the search for meaning in life is identified as the primary motivational force in human beings. It is based on three philosophical and psychological concepts: Freedom of Will, Will to Meaning, and Meaning in Life. Clients are assisted in achieving the openness and flexibility that will allow them to shape their day-to-day lives in a meaningful way.

Psychological Life Coaching and Logotherapy (PLCL) Psychological life coaching and logotherapy will offer adults and young adults a dynamic form of coaching therapy that has been developed to assist you achieve your goals and cope better with the day-to-day stresses of life. Prevent Underage Drinking

Adults are advised to look out for behaviour that might indicate that their teenagers may be consuming alcohol. SAB, which recently launched the 18+ campaign as a call to action for adults to be role models in the fight against underage drinking, offers this checklist of warning signs to be on the lookout for to prevent underage drinking.

• Find the triggers: Find out if there is anything which might tempt your teenager to want to use alcohol. • Stress, anxiety and depression: Pay attention to your teenager for signs of stress, anxiety and depression. • Your teen regularly complains about being bored: Teenagers who can’t tolerate being alone, have trouble keeping themselves occupied, and crave excitement, are prime candidates for using alcohol. • Your teen starts exhibiting signs of rebellion and anger: Many teens choose to express their anger at their parents by doing something they have been told not to do.

• They start mimicking their friends: Listen to them and watch them to see if they have fallen into the “everyone is doing it” trap. • Your teen lacks confidence: Some teenagers would do things under the influence of alcohol that they otherwise would never risk doing. Other warning signs: • Mood swings • School problems • Switching friends • A “don’t care attitude” • Finding alcohol in your child’s room or backpack, or smelling alcohol on his or her breath • Physical or mental problems Sources: South African Depression and Anxiety Group and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Kumon

Pursuing Potential with Kumon At Kumon, the approach to learning is different. They develop children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. They equip your child to learn for themselves so that they do not become dependent on, or limited by, the skills and knowledge of others.

according to their needs and ability. When they attend the study centre, they are supported and guided towards not only the right answers, but also the right study techniques. The way in which students approach their work has a profound effect on their performance and their results.

Kumon’s outlook goes far beyond school life - they are thinking of the young adult your child will become. Through the Maths and English programmes, they will nurture your child’s independent study skills, so that they can apply this confident approach to everything they do – be it in school, work or life. To reap these rewards, a long-term commitment from their family is essential.

“It is our job as educators not to stuff knowledge into children as if they were merely empty boxes, but to encourage each child to want to learn, to enjoy learning and be capable of studying whatever he or she may need to or wish to in the future,” said Toru Kumon, founder of the Kumon Method.

Kumon will guide your child to study at a level where they can concentrate and be motivated, allowing them to develop their ability and desire to learn independently.

At Kumon, your child’s work is individualised

Happy Valley Educentre Happy Valley Educentre is owned and run by Amber Chipps and Michelle White, who have created an environment that they, as moms would want their children to attend. They take babies from three months up to children aged six years (Grade R). Michelle and Amber both have foundation intermediate degrees in teaching and have both studied early childhood development and remedial education, so are able to spot potential learning or physical problems, and help children find ways to overcome them. The children are treated like members of family and encouraged to share in every aspect of the day. There are constant eyes on every child at all times, as the school has over 24 staff, CCTV cameras and access is strictly maintained by a full-time security manager. The school has an aftercare and offers extra murals like Soccer Stars, Kiddinastics, Action Ball, drama and music, swimming, ballet and hip-hop dancing. The school does not close during the school holidays. The beautiful grounds are the perfect space for lots of physical activity and learning about nature. Happy Valley has an open door policy to enrolled parents to pop in and visit at any time during the day. Rainbow in a Glass Experiment

LITTLE LYONS PRESCHOOL

You will need: Sugar, water, food colouring, a tablespoon and five glasses or clear plastic cups. What to do: • Line up five glasses. Add one tablespoon of sugar to the first glass, two tablespoons of sugar to the second glass, three tablespoons of sugar to the third glass, and four tablespoons of sugar to the fourth glass. The fifth glass remains empty. • Add three tablespoons of water to each of the four glasses and stir each solution. If the sugar does not dissolve in any of the four glasses, then add one more tablespoon of water to each glass. • Add two to three drops of red food colouring in the first glass, yellow food colouring in the second glass, green food colouring in the third glass and blue food colouring in the fourth glass. Stir each solution. • Fill the last glass with about one fourth of the blue sugar solution. • Carefully layer some green sugar solution above the blue liquid. Do this by putting a spoon in the glass, just above the blue layer, and pouring the green solution slowly over the back of the spoon. • Add green solution until the glass is about half full. • Now layer the yellow solution above the green liquid, using the back of the spoon. Fill the glass to three quarters full. • Finally, layer the red solution above the yellow liquid.

The Magic Dragon The names Arthur and Avril Reed bring back many fond musical and magical memories for many families that lived in the Highway and Durban area.

FOR AGES 5 & UP

After the death of his beloved wife Avril, Arthur decided to pen an autobiography of his magical life of dance, hypnosis, magic and art, entitled ‘Arthur Reed, The Magic Dragon’. After a long battle with cancer, Avril died on 20 October 2012. He wrote in the dedication of his book: “My loving wife, Avril, who always encouraged me and became part of my outrageous adventures and my wonderful guardian angel, who made it all possible.”

HOLIDAY BOOT CAMP ON 13 & 14 July

His book covers his life as a young boy growing up during the Second World War and becoming a mechanical engineer in the locomotive and car components industry. At 18 he joined a dance studio, where he became the ballroom and jive champion and met Avril. At 19 he was introduced to hypnosis and became one of the founder members of the South African Association of Therapeutic Hypnotists. “I am a small one man show. I prefer the personal touch and doing everything myself, which ensures that I can keep control of every single aspect of the functions I arrange,” said Simone. She specialises in small, intimate functions, both private and corporate, which require a personal touch. “I enjoy doing functions in people’s homes where their own décor and linen can be used, as well as hiring and sourcing items. This showcases their personality in the function.”

Mother’s Day Delight!

Foam & Inflatable Fun

We celebrate Mother’s Day on 10 May, which is an opportunity to show your mother (and grandmothers) how much you appreciate and love them. Posh Party has some great ideas for you on how to spoil your mom this month! • Breakfast in bed: Nothing beats being woken up with a hot cup of tea and pancakes for breakfast! Add some freshly picked flowers from the garden and spend some quality time with your mom. • Pamper day: Book a spa half day or full day package at your favourite spa getaway. If you are limited with budget, why not pamper her yourself at home? • Shopping spree: Get her a gift voucher to her favourite shop or shopping centre and spoil her with a delicious lunch during the shopping spree break time. • Gifts: These always go down well, but why not try a home-made gift? Bake some cookies at home, or frame some beautiful photos full of memories. Get creative and make it unique and special. • Tea for Two: High tea is always a popular one! Either book at an exclusive hotel or do your very own high tea at home! • Luncheon: Can’t go wrong with a fresh and delicious home cooked meal with the rest of your friends and/or family members at home. Whatever you do, Posh Party wishes you a Happy Mother’s Day and hopes you feel the love! For more information on a Posh Party or Wedding, contact Tarryn Livsey at tarryn@poshparty.co.za or 078 200 8578 or visit www.poshparty.co.za.

Load Shedding Tips and Tricks During times of load shedding, it’s important to ensure that your critical systems are protected against power cuts, as well as power surges when the power comes on again. PCs can be very sensitive to power cuts, dips and surges. In the event of an unplanned power outage, it is possible that open files could become corrupted or files damaged so badly that it is impossible to open them again.

If you are looking for a loyal and loving companion AACL has the perfect puppy waiting for you to adopt!

What can you do to prevent damage to your PC hardware and the critical software and data housed on these PCs? Do regular back-ups. It is important that any sensitive data is backed up regularly, if possible on a daily basis. This will prevent huge amounts of time being spent catching up on processing what was lost. If possible invest in an offsite back-up system.

Eden (3 months old) Female, German Shepherd cross

Invest in Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) for your PCs as well as any network hubs or switches. In the event of load shedding, a UPS will allow your users time to exit the applications they are working on and save any work they are busy with. PCs can then be safely switched off, preventing data loss. Switch off all PCs not performing critical functions when not in use. Any data that is open on a PC is at risk of being damaged in the event of a power failure. It is important to exit all open applications by closing them properly if access to the data is not required for a period of time. Should a power failure occur, damage to the open data files will be minimised. Source: IT Corporation, www.itcorp.co.za, 031 – 266 0000.

Readers’ Life Thank you to Mum’s Mail readers for your recent donation to Kiddie Kan. The goods were given to the poor of KwaMashu via KwaMashu Methodist Church and also to Gozololo Children’s Home. Brenda Daniels. Just reading through the Mum’s Mail, which is always a great distraction from work! I always wonder who the kids are on the front page – I know who both the kids are this time round, but a little section “meet the cover kids” would be nice. I see they are mentioned on page two, but definitely more of a write up about them please! Leanne Lorrance. The response is always great from Mum’s Mail – thank you very much! Judi Gibson (Animal Anti-Cruelty League). I’m at our monthly play date at Funky Monkey (a play centre ad I saw in Mum’s Mail). It’s the only time I get a copy of the mag and am able to read it cover to cover, sipping on a nice cup of Five Roses. Love the content, from articles to ads, so helpful in planning my daughter’s birthday party. Thank you for the great read. Avisha Chaithram.
