Meet the Cover Stars Meet Charmaine and Sandile Hlongwane and their kids – Alwande (9), Anela (4) and Amelinda (2). Alwande is a sweet and well behaved boy who loves school. He also loves rugby, cricket, swimming and hockey. He is a friendly child full of love for his friends and family. He enjoys spending time with his Daddy – they go bike riding together, play soccer and they play PlayStation together. Anela is very bubbly and such a drama queen, according to her mom. “She is the total opposite from me, as she is more girly than I am, she loves the mirror, doing her nails, and is always combing her hair, with lots of Vaseline on her lips!” She loves swimming, ballet and singing. She can be a handful but she is full of love and cares for everyone around her. Amelinda is very friendly and responsible – she’s only two but always prefers to feed herself and dress herself. She loves playing games on the iPad, singing along to the nursery rhymes and loves dancing along too. “She is very disciplined and as a result she shouts at her sister a lot for being a cry baby, and sometimes tells her to chew properly when she eats,” laughs Charmaine. Charmaine and Sandile spend most of their time with their kids – if indoors they play a lot of games and do movies. They also enjoy outdoor activities and try to avoid shopping malls. Ahead of Father’s Day, dad Sandile says that a good father is to understand his responsibilities, putting your loved ones first – your happiness is seeing them happy. “Being a father has been, without a doubt, my greatest source of achievement, pride and inspiration. Fatherhood has taught me about unconditional love, reinforced the importance of giving back and taught me how to be a better person,” says Sandile. “We are young parents but blessed with so much strength and love for all three of our little ones. God has really blessed us so much. I couldn’t have asked for a better family,” concludes Charmaine. Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Men’s Health Month
The purpose of Men’s Health Month in June is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. It is about the health risks men may face, how to prevent them, what symptoms to look out for, and where to get medical assistance. This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. The response has been overwhelming with thousands of awareness activities around the globe. Visit www. menshealthmonth.org for more information. Health Tips for Men • Eliminate ‘white foods’ from your diet. White flour, white sugar and other processed foods are not only devoid of vitamins and minerals, but they’ve also been stripped of their natural fibre. • Stay away from dangerous trans fats.
7
While it’s important to reduce your overall fat intake, it’s even more important to watch the types of fat you eat. • Take a potent daily multivitamin and mineral supplement. • Include weight training in your exercise routine. Aerobic exercise is great for cardiovascular conditioning, but it’s vastly inferior to weight training in attacking the ‘flab factor’. • Maintain your optimal weight. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for yourself. • Drink alcohol only in moderation. Repeated studies have shown that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol (all kinds) protects not only against heart disease, but also lowers risk of death from all causes. Remember that moderation is key. • Reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Experts estimate that 80 per cent of all cancers can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices. Source: www.alive.com.

Don’t Give Up
the first time in my life I am exercising to get strong and fit, and not to look good. I’m eating well to feel healthy and young, and not to get thin. Understanding Patchy Ethnic Skin
The key to success with skin of colour is to always treat with minimum inflammation, as the slower melanin degradation coupled with over-stimulating the skin increases the risk of injury to the skin. This includes unsuitable lasers, dermabrasion, peels, micro-needling and excessive friction on the skin. Ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids and glycolic acid should be avoided. The use of banned ingredients such as Hydroquinone and Mercury offer short term results, but leave the skin burnt black long term. Chemical burns can leave one permanently scarred.
Duzimed Advanced Cosmetic Laser Clinic recommends the Diode Laser. The treatment protocol uses the latest combination technology incorporating Diode, IPL, and RF in a single shot. This offers a painless, maximum penetration treatment into the thicker ethnic skin.Eczema is believed to occur twice as frequently in darker skin, increasing the risk of pigmentation. Acne is linked to hyperpigmentation. Antibiotics can cause darkening of the skin for several months. Darker skins are also more at risk of developing keloid scarring post injury. As beard hairs are coarse and curly, they easily become ingrown, thereby causing Lifestyle and hormonal changes can affect the eruptions that lead to darkened areas and distribution of colour, leading to sunspots, shaving bumps. Treatment increases cellular age spots, or melasma. Overzealous facial turnover and inhibits ingrown hair. hair removal methods such as hot wax, threading and tweezing eventually result For more information on treatments for in dark patchy facial discoloration. Healthy Life/Everyday Life
The Joys of Fatherhood For me, being a father is the greatest joy. It’s a joy because I have witnessed the birth of my baby girl, seen her take her first steps and heard her say “Dad” for the first time. I’ve been on the receiving end of thousands of hugs and kisses, thrown my little girl high in the sky, and heard her scream with excitement as she fell back into my arms again. I’ve learnt all the words to her favourite songs and see her excitement when she grabs our hands to get up and dance with her. I’m watching her grow and learn what it means to be a person in this big world and every day she reminds me to see the world with joy and wonderment. She reminds me of the possibilities in everything around me; that the smallest details, which can so easily go unnoticed or forgotten, can become the most magical; and that every moment is precious. We all have an idea of what having a baby is like, right? Maybe a bit like that scene in ‘Knocked Up’ or something off ‘One Born Every Minute’. But what becomes apparent, very quickly, is that each birth and parenting experience is unique and that you don’t know anything at all. No scene in any movie will give you even a sliver of insight into childbirth or parenthood. At first I was worried about how I was going to be a dad, how was I going to take on this huge title and be good at it? No-one offers you training before hand, there is no interview either, you are simply deemed fit for the job. What I can Accommodation for up to 150 guests. • En Suites • Dormitories • Apartments • Camping facilities Self catering and catered options available.
say is that when the big day finally arrives, all those fears disappear, your instinct steps in and your pride generates a confidence that you never thought possible. Suddenly you are self-informed and in sync with the needs of your new baby. Although at times it can feel as if you have been thrown into the middle of a tornado, your life really does change, but in the most beautiful way. You wake up before the sun rises and realise how you have never experienced a cup of coffee on the patio, in the crisp morning air. You realise that one of the most astonishing things in life, is life itself, and watching your baby sleep leaves you in complete awe. Afternoon naps have upped their ranking in your weekend schedule and now most arrangements are planned around that heavenly 2pm snooze. A family walk along the beach on a Sunday takes preference as you and your wife soak in the reality of what the word ‘family’ really means. Amongst all the craziness and excitement of this role, one cliché that actually rings true is that you have never known a love like you do now - a love that makes everything you’ve ever done in your life feel insignificant when you look at those tiny eyes staring up at you. The Link Between Child Development and Free-Play
JULIA POWELL BALLET & PILATES Passion & Excellence For boys & girls ages 3yrs & up • Classes in HILTON & PMB • Internationally recognised exams • Stage performances • Pilates for adults
As technology has become our children’s main source of entertainment, the bigger questions stands - “why has the digital age taken over the learning development of our children?” It is important for parents to bear in mind that the brain of a child develops rapidly before the age of three. This is a crucial time in your toddler’s life, when he/she begins forming speech and language abilities through human communication and interaction. Regardless of age, play is the universal language amongst children. Through play, your kids learn to use all their senses by touching, tasting, smelling, hearing and imitating actions they see from others. Freeplay is also referred to as “unstructured play” where children take the initiative to create stories around set activities without the guidance from a parent or adult close by. A study conducted by an Australian National University found that allowing kids to use their imaginations when playing was highly beneficial to language development. Outdoor play is as important as imaginative play, as your child strengthens their muscles and mobility, whether it is through jumping off a rock or learning to navigate across the monkey bars. By simply taking your kids outdoors or to a playpark, you are able to watch their confidence grow as they learn to take risks and explore the world around them. This is a call to all parents to ensure that your children receive the best learning experience with each school activity and at home. By placing a focus on learning and free-play instead of technology, you instil confidence, trust and self-assurance in your child. Source: www.bugzplaypark.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Are You Teaching Your Kids Bad Money Habits? When it comes to finances, the habits that children learn will most probably follow them through to adulthood. Are you unintentionally teaching your kids bad money habits by making the following common mistakes? Creating a money shield “By shielding your child from how finances work, you are unintentionally putting them on the back foot,” says Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education at FNB. “Introduce them to simple money concepts as soon as you can.” If they are fairly young you can get your child to pay for something in the queue and also help them identify the difference between a want and a need. Older children may even have the ability to grasp more complex concepts such as compound interest or credit. Not giving them control “By giving your child some measure of control over their own money you will be empowering them
to make important financial decisions,” adds Sibiya. “Set up a bank account and, under your watchful eye, let them make their own transactions such as airtime purchases or swipes.” Not allowing them to make their own purchases It is easy to simply buy something for your child outright, or tell them you can’t afford it and move on if you are in the store. But, stopping and making your child think carefully about their purchase will put them in good stead for the future. They will have to consider how much money they have put away and whether the cost of the item is worth it. Too much pocket money Giving children too much pocket money can be detrimental to future good financial behaviour. Source: FNB, www.fnb.co.za.

Make Your Own Fake Snot
Smartie Party Planners We specialise in kiddies’ parties
As disgusting as it might sound to some people, let’s make some fake snot! Snot actually serves an important purpose in our body so this experiment is not all about grossing out our friends, although that’s certainly part of the fun. What you’ll need: • Boiling water (be careful with this) • A cup • Gelatin • Corn syrup • A teaspoon • A fork
• Modern Dance • Jazz • Hip Hop • Contemporary • Exams & Stage Productions • BASI Pilates New ClAsses BAlletRiP & ZuMBA
PMB & Howick • All ages welcome
Contact: Les-Lee Robinson 033 342 4168 | 072 077 1248 leslee.rob@gmail.com
Instructions: Fill half a cup with boiling water. Add three teaspoons of gelatin to the boiling water. Let it soften before stirring with a fork. Add a quarter of a cup of corn syrup. Stir the mixture again with your fork and look at the long strands of gunk that have formed. As the mixture cools slowly add more water, small amounts at a time. What’s happening? Mucus is made mostly of sugars and protein. Although different than the ones found in the real thing, this is exactly what you used to make your fake snot. The long, fine strings you could see inside your fake snot when you moved it around are protein strands. These protein strands make snot sticky and capable of stretching.
