Editor’s Life As I type this, we are gearing up for our annual high tea at the end of August. It is the 10th year we are hosting this event, so the pressure is certainly immense. My nightmares have already started (they usually start 2 – 3 weeks prior to the event), but for some reason they started much earlier. I suspect it may be due to the fact that the event has almost doubled in size since last year’s “Green Goddess” high tea. The theme for the 2015 high tea is Carnival Kaleidoscope, and with 800 ladies attending, we are bound to be astounded by some incredibly creative (and daring) outfits! The prize for the best dressed lady has been generously sponsored by Viv Kuttner and Katia Papadopoulos – an ageLoc Galvanic Body Spa, Body Shaping Gel and Dermatic Effects worth over R5000! Sonja du Toit of Money Piggy has donated a customised piggy bank worth R800 for the lady with the funkiest headwear.

Passionate songwriter, singer, recording artist and dance choreographer Joelene Joseph, also known as Jjo, was 15 years old when she started singing at her local church. She has loved music and dance all her life.

As a singer/songwriter she is inspired daily by different facets of life. Her debut album, Love with No Limit, was inspired by really tough experiences. In 2012 she was diagnosed with a stress induced type of epilepsy called Left Lobe Temporal Epilepsy. She became so restricted and life seemed to be crashing in, as she experienced seizures at odd times and she wasn’t able to be the independent woman she once was. She wasn’t allowed to drive or be on her own. Jjo couldn’t be the mother and wife she once was, and she fell into depression.

“I drew strength as I began to pen my inspirations, finally understanding the purpose of my trial,” Jjo said. “I began to write about determination, courage and tenacity.” Jjo loves spending time with her three daughters. Khelsy Lenah (seven) is the most affectionate child and Jjo gets hugs and kisses around the clock from this little one. Khelsy loves to play drums and loves singing. Jordyn Leah (10) is the tomboy of the family and loves sport – but also loves singing and shares her mom’s love for baking! Khurstyn Naomi (15) is the big girl of the family. They laugh, joke and have fun like sisters – they also fight like sisters. Jjo loves their relationship. Jjo wants to inspire the world with her music and use it as a tool to change mindsets and mend brokenness. To find out more about Jjo check out her website www.jjomusic.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Kolorex Advanced Care for Recurring Thrush Vaginal thrush affects many women and it is actually quite common, with the triggers varying from person to person and ranging from poor diet and hormonal changes to use of antibiotics. Usually caused by a yeast-like fungus called candida, thrush is a fungal infection and it affects all women differently. It may be a mere irritant for some, but it can be quite debilitating for others. Women who suffer vaginal thrush only periodically will likely use an anti-fungal cream, whereas chronic sufferers (who get vaginal thrush three times a year or more) will need a more lasting treatment like Kolorex Advanced Care. Kolorex is a complementary medicine that assists in treating fungal infections from the inside out. It comes in easy-to-swallow softgel capsules with no aftertaste and contains an effective (and proven) antifungal solution
that kills candida from the inside from day one. By taking a full course of one Kolorex softgel capsule a day with a meal for 30 days, women with recurrent vaginal thrush can help reduce the risk of thrush coming back and, in so doing, benefit from long-lasting relief. Kolorex is available in pharmacies and health shops without a prescription. Because vaginal thrush affects everyone differently, with some having a mild case and others a severe case, it’s fine to extend the treatment of Kolorex to two months where necessary. For those who are prone to thrush, once the 30 day course is completed, you may want to consider a maintenance regimen of one capsule twice a day for one week a month, which can be taken for as long as you need to. Visit www.glenmarkpharma.co.za/ kolorex for more information.

Garden in a Bucket
Get your kids to create their own personal, private garden that they can carry with them, take care of and enjoy! What you need: • A colourful plastic bucket or container, at least 20cm deep, preferably with a handle • Trowel or spade • Lightweight potting mix • Bright, lowgrowing bedding plants or dwarf vegetable seedlings • Decorating items – stickers, foam decorations, markers, etc. • Glue • Sharp tool for making drainage holes Step 1: Have the kids pick out a colourful bucket or container. Then head over to a plant nursery and let them choose a few small bedding annuals or small veggie seedlings. Step 2: Let the kids decorate their bucket/ container with markers, stickers and glued on trinkets and glitter. Step 3: Create drainage holes at the bottom
of the bucket. An adult can poke a few holes with a sharp tool or an electric drill. Six to eight holes should be fine. Step 4: Fill the buckets about half way with the potting mix. Soilless mixes tend to be the lightest and will be easier for a child to carry in the bucket. Step 5: Carefully remove the plants from their containers and plant them inside the garden buckets. You can add more soil, if necessary. Step 6: Water the Garden in a Bucket and that’s it! You can put the garden in a place of honour or take a drive to Grandma’s to show it off. Maintain the Garden in a Bucket by keeping it watered daily. Have your child check to see if it needs water by letting them poke their finger gently into the soil. If it feels dry about an inch below the surface, it’s time to water. Source: www.lifeisagarden.co.za.

What Is Access Consciousness and the Access Bars? Access Consciousness, an organisation that offers Access Bars sessions, has been going in the US for about 20 years, but has only been in South Africa for about five years, and it is suddenly taking off here. Save Seven Lives This August, Organ Donor Month
Dr Deseré Ferreira
The Organ Donor Foundation (ODF) would like to encourage members of the public to become organ donors this August, Organ Donor Month. One person can save seven lives when they become an organ donor – this includes the use of one heart, two lungs, two kidneys, one liver and one pancreas. One donor can also improve the quality of life of up to 50 more people by donating their tissue – skin, bone, corneas and heart valves.
General Practitioner
There are over 4 000 people throughout South Africa currently awaiting an organ transplant operation. Less than 600 transplants are performed each year and many adults and children die waiting for a life-saving transplant. During August the ODF wants every South African to think about and act on becoming an organ donor. It costs nothing to register as an organ donor and is an extremely simple procedure. Visit their website at www.odf. org.za or call the toll free line: 0800 22 66 11 to register. You will receive an information pack in the post with an educational leaflet, an organ donor card and stickers for your ID and driver’s licence. Most importantly, the ODF asks that you discuss your decision with your family, as they would need to give consent at the time of your death.

Caring For Your Child During the Cold And Flu Season
Dr Paul Darby-Wade Dentist
There is nothing worse than seeing your little one feeling down and out with a cold or the flu. Carla Yssel, Linctagon Brand Manager, provides some tips for caring for your child while he/she has a cold or flu:
BCHD (Stell.), MFGDP RCS (Uk), Diploma in Implant Dentistry RCS (Uk)
SPECIAL SERVICES:
• Children • Nervous Patients • FAST BRACES • Tooth Whitening • Same Day Crowns • Implants
Rest up. By resting, your child is giving their body a chance to do what it needs to do; fight the infection. Fill up on fluids. Fluids help your child to stay hydrated, thin out their mucus build up to help get rid of it and to ease a sore throat. Keep the air moist. Using a humidifier in your child’s room keeps the air moist, and can ease dry throats, thin out mucus and improve breathing. Fight it from the inside. Use Linctagon’s great-tasting Junior Effervescent Tablets containing Pelargonium sidoides that can support your child’s immune system to help them fight off their cold or flu. It is suitable for children from one year and is free from tartrazine, artificial colourants, caffeine, lactose, yeast and gluten. Linctagon’s Throat Spray, which is suitable for children from six months and upwards, also contains Pelargonium sidoides that can help to alleviate any discomfort associated with colds or flu, and also aids in alleviating the severity of symptoms and shortens the duration of the cold or flu.

August is World Psoriasis Awareness Month Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition. There are five types, each with unique signs and symptoms. Between 10% and 30% of people who develop psoriasis get a related form of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis, which causes inflammation of the joints. Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis. It appears as patches of raised, reddish skin covered by silvery-white scales. These patches, or plaques, frequently form on the elbows, knees, lower back and scalp. The other types are guttate psoriasis (small, red spots on the skin), pustular psoriasis (white pustules surrounded by red skin), inverse psoriasis (smooth, red lesions form in skin folds), and erythrodermic psoriasis (widespread redness, severe itching, and pain). Regardless of type, psoriasis usually causes discomfort. The skin often itches, and it may crack and bleed. In severe cases, the itching and discomfort may keep a person awake at night, and the pain can make everyday tasks difficult. Psoriasis is a chronic (lifelong) condition because there is currently no cure. People often experience flares and remissions throughout their life. Long and Luscious Eyelashes Eyelashes are not just there to make our eyes look pretty; they protect our eyes from dust and sand particles, from rain and sweat and shield the eyes from the bright light of the sun.

Lashes go through a constant hair growth cycle which takes six to eight weeks for a lash to grow and be shed. On average the upper eyelid has approximately 90 to 150 eyelashes and the bottom about 70 to 80. Age, environmental factors and genetics influence the growth cycle, length and the number of lashes a person has.

If you’ve always wanted longer and fuller eyelashes without smudged mascara at the end of the day, the answer is right here! Eyelash extensions come in various lengths, thicknesses, colours and curls. Your eyelash technician will discuss the different options with you. An individual eyelash is attached directly to your natural eyelash with a special bonding agent and the extensions are light therefore they won’t weigh your natural lashes down. Unlike mascara, eyelash extensions don’t clump or smudge and you can go about your day without worrying about your gorgeous lashes.

Empowering Our Children One Conversation at a Time Growing up was tough and having a volatile mother meant we had to be pretty cautious about what we said and how we said it. Anything that could be considered disrespectful was dealt with in the form of a good smack across the head. I learnt not to challenge ‘authority’ figures. I had been put down so many times that I started believing that others were more important than me and that they deserved what they wanted over what I wanted. There were beliefs that were instilled in me that limited me and brought me to this point of realisation that I too was limiting my children. How you speak to your children becomes their inner voice. I believe we empower or disempower our children one conversation at a time. Every time we communicate with them we grow or limit them. We need to be aware and ensure we have more growth conversations. My tips for doing this include: 1. Notice when your emotions are taking over and ask yourself; “What do I really want for my children here?’ Breathe and adjust accordingly. 2. Spend 10 minutes writing down all the things you remember your parents saying to you. Then put them into a positive and negative list. Write a positive for every negative statement you have. 3. When you have had a limiting conversation, as soon as you have calmed down, apologise to your child and tell them what you did wrong. Tell them what you do want and how you would like them to deal with situations like this in the future. Source: Stephen Light, Leadership Expert, stephen@stephenlight.com, www.stephenlight.com. 51

Toys Suitable for Your Child: Three to Five Years A child of this age is testing his independence, control of language and learning new skills every day. He needs to be watched constantly as he has no sense of caution or fear. Dressing up clothes to pretend play with encourages imagination. Paint, play dough and stamping are great creative hits at this age. They love stickers and puzzles always have to be of interest to them, so if your son loves trucks, make sure he has a puzzle with a truck, as this will encourage him to build it. They also start to play together and share activities with others, so make sure he has ample play dates. Dolls’ houses and garages are wonderful gifts as it will amuse them for hours. They are fascinated by nature and love to collect bugs and look at butterflies and animals – encourage this with the types of books you buy.

No TV, PlayStation, X-box or Wii Children under the age of two should not be encouraged to watch TV, play PlayStation or any computer games. In 1999 The American Academy Of Paediatrics issued guidelines recommending that children under the age of two watch no TV or screen entertainment. With the seeming increase in ADHD in children there has been a strong link to watching and playing screen games that are programming our toddlers to expect change every three seconds. The golden rule is everything in moderation – encourage your children to be active and to explore their environment. By Liz Victor. Becoming a new mom is an exciting time but can also be daunting as you make numerous decisions before the big arrival. Of course, one of these – and probably one of the most important – is about breastfeeding!

Advice comes from loved ones, doctors, strangers and, of course, good old Google. Ultimately however, you have to make the best decision for yourself and the new Moms Mail Ad_59.5x45mm.indd addition. While this is a personal choice, here are a few tips to encourage you to take the leap! Breastfeeding is proven to provide many health benefits like defence against illnesses and reducing allergies. It is highly nutritional and enables long-term protection from other diseases. How to make sure you can breastfeed and still live a ‘normal’ life: Some moms feel like they are pressured into breastfeeding and that their lives are on hold while this happens. The good news is that there are options available that ensure you can experience the true bond that breastfeeding offers while ‘sharing the responsibility’ with your spouse. There are products such as breast pumps that allow you to express milk, milk storage containers that enable you to store your milk for up to five days and milk warmers to keep the milk at the right temperature when needed. This gives moms the freedom to do what they want without the guilt – while involving the dads in this important task. It’s important for all moms to ensure they fully educate themselves around the benefits and options there are when it comes to breastfeeding. For more information visit www.philips.co.za. Fun Experiments to Try at Home
For boys & girls 5 - 16 years
Pepper and Water Trick You will need: Black pepper, water, dishwashing liquid and a bowl/plate. What to do: Pour water into a plate/bowl. Shake some pepper into the water. If you dip your finger into the pepper and water, nothing much happens. If you put a drop of dishwashing liquid on your finger and then dip it into the pepper and water, the pepper will rush to the outer edges of the dish. So what? When you add detergent to water the surface tension of the water is lowered. Water normally bulges up a bit, like what you see when you look at a water drop. When the surface tension is lowered, the water wants to spread out. As the water flattens on the dish, the pepper is carried to the outer edge of the plate as if by magic. Tornado in a bottle You will need: Water, a clear plastic bottle with a cap (that won’t leak), glitter and dish washing liquid. What to do: Fill the plastic bottle with water until it reaches around three quarters full. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid. Sprinkle in a few pinches of glitter (this will make your tornado easier to see). Put the cap of the bottle on tightly and turn the bottle upside down. Hold it by the neck and quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for few seconds. So what? Spinning the bottle in a circular motion creates a water vortex that looks like a mini tornado. The water is rapidly spinning around the centre of the vortex due to force.

Oakridge College Schools have undergone little change over the decades and the large bureaucratic nature of many schools has stifled the innovation of teachers and the positive learning experience of the pupils. Established in 1999, Oakridge College was designed to address these challenges facing teaching and learning by creating a small coeducational high school set in a dynamic learning environment where class sizes of 12 ensures that teachers are able to give individual attention to pupils.

The Importance of Early Intervention for Learning Problems As an educational psychologist with over twenty years of experience, it still dismays me that children are brought to me after the fact. Early assessment and intervention will often eliminate or reduce any scholastic difficulties. Typically, learning difficulties surface in Grade 3 when the work-load increases and learners are thought to have mastered the basics of reading and numeracy. Not all children have the advantage of attending a structured readiness programme or pre-school. This places them at a disadvantage for early learning and also for an opportunity for parents to get an accurate appraisal of their child’s development in relation to their peers. Sometimes parents have an idea that their child is not coping but refuse to accept it. Children also disguise their difficulties as they don’t want to disappoint their parents. Avoidance with school tasks is normally
a sign that something is not right. It may not necessarily be a learning problem, but possibly a situational difficulty such as bullying, personality clashes, separation anxiety or peer pressure. The key to resolving issues is to have open communication, realistic expectations and an accurate evaluation of the child’s potential and of any difficulties that may be hindering development. A confidential, unbiased assessment is the first step in knowing your child’s strengths and weaknesses. A professional will be able to assist parents in making correct decisions and advise them where the best possible help is to be found. This will give you peace of mind and enable the child to develop his or her ability. Source: Graham Halse, Educational Psychologist, 031 – 209 4567.

Integrating For Learning Success Interhemispheric integration refers to the communication between the left and right cerebral hemispheres in our brains. Our efficient function in life, and certainly academically, is dependent on hemispheric communication. Interhemispheric integration is hugely beneficial in learning as it supports and promotes: • processing speed • comprehension • thinking skills • organisational skills • verbal expressive language
hemisphere. It can also be incorporated into kinaesthetic learning. For example, one may count or spell out a word while drumming. If your child finds drumming challenging you may elect to start with a simple bi-lateral hand movement. As the child improves, so you can vary the pattern and the drum beat. Repeat a new pattern until the child knows it really well. Be cautious as some children experience hypersensitivity to sound and touch during drumming. It can also be fun to introduce drumming language. Say “Ta” for a regular beat and “Boo” for a heavy beat. You can add more later on. Drumming is just one of many innovative ways to promote interhemispheric integration. Be creative and have fun!
Extramural activities that promote bilateral movements are great for enhancing interhemispheric integration. For example swimming, karate, gym, riding a bicycle and even drumming. Drumming is a fun activity and can easily be implemented at home. Small Art for Big People Vin d’Easel was created by husband and wife team, Warren and Christine Bernard. Together they joined forces to create a project that’s all about art, photography, and having a bit of fun. They wanted to produce artwork that didn’t cost a fortune and that was small enough to display anywhere in the house or office. Hence they invented Vin d’Easel – small art for big people. Christine is a graphic designer, illustrator and writer who illustrates all the art on the site. She thinks a lot about food, coffee and wine and her two little guinea pigs (Arthur P. Bernard and his trusty sidekick, Bean). She loves nothing more than spending the day with her husband, reading good books and drinking strong coffee. Warren is a retoucher and photographer who captures the images at Vin d’Easel. He likes music, photography, strong coffee, cheese, sushi, gadgets, beaches, animals, life in general and never wants to stop learning and exploring. He also hates failure, hiccups, getting shocked and warm beer. He often speaks to himself.

Why Every Vehicle Should Be Fitted With a Tracking Device Vehicle tracking provides a solution for keeping track of your loved ones, making sure they are safe, and also monitoring driver behaviour. “Besides being able to pinpoint the exact location of a vehicle in real-time, telematics also enables service providers to provide an accurate recount of the vehicle’s movements and how and when it was driven,” says John Edmeston, Deputy CEO and Global CFO of Cartrack Holdings Ltd. Being able to know that your child or family member is safe, driving responsibly and can be located quickly if they need help is a huge comfort. “A GPS tracking unit offers geo-fencing that sets a virtual perimeter for a realworld geographical area. If you discuss the locations that you expect your family member to be at certain times, then you can set a geo-fence on their travelling location that will alert you if the vehicle was to move outside the perimeter,” says John. The pure tracking component of the unit allows for the vehicle to be recovered in the event of it being stolen, however, it also provides an online portal that will allow the family to log on from any location to check where the vehicle is.
Have you not had enough of this crime? If so, why not then use your cell phone to help fight it and keep your hands clean? Your eyes and cell are your only involvement. See how many other residents in your area are already taking part. JOIN THEM! Let’s fight this crime together!
While vehicle tracking was first developed as a means to counter crimes such as vehicle thefts and hijackings, the modern day telematics capabilities present a holistic safety solution to ensure that your loved ones are safer on the roads,” concludes John. Readers’ Life Mum’s Mail had a wonderful response to the new newsletter format. • I love this short overview – then I can click away to more! Keep up the great work. Dean Hodgson. • I think the newsletter is a wonderful method of communication in addition to website. It is certainly the channel most advertisers utilise to entice people to visit their websites by giving them a teaser or interesting bit of info to get their curiosity going. Because one is so intrigued, one then visits the website to read the entire article. Great idea and I wish you all the success! Tammy Govender. • I think your new format is absolutely perfect! Great job! Barbara Graham. Absolutely loving this new format! Maurice Sias. • Stunning idea, thank you very much. Love your ideas and magazine. Haley van Niekerk. • Absolutely yes! I loved the brightness and gentle-on-the-eye layout… I am sometimes overwhelmed by the busy websites and overloaded pages of information! Cary Hollins-Bott. • I like being given the choice to read more if I want to. Brenda Daniels. • I think the new format is very user friendly – well done. Adrienne. • This is brilliant! So nice and easy to read, and you can choose to read more or not. Love it! Well done! Janene Carey. • This is such a good idea! Keep up the good work. Lou Harvey. Many thanks for your ongoing e-mails, very informative and greatly appreciated. Aleida Maria Fuller. Send your letters to editor@mumsmail.com.
