Is your child struggling at school?

Our proven methodology boosts school results and self-confidence

We have had a busy month as we have been to the UK visiting all our family and friends, with a family wedding thrown in there too – I am now ready for a proper holiday since I’ve driven thousands of miles over the last month, from London to Manchester and Wales to Yorkshire! I was so proud of my family all looking so smart at my sister’s wedding. Evie, my daughter, was a flower girl for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed herself and my handsome son, Jacob, was in a beautiful blue suit and looked divine, as did my hubby. I think I scrubbed up okay too. Funnily enough, there are not many photos of my husband and I, but plenty of everyone else! We have completely over indulged and are now on a health kick to get fit and active again.

Tips to Beat Stressed Economic Conditions In the light of recent increased monthly expenses for South Africans, Wikus Olivier, Debt Management Expert at DebtSafe, urges people to review their current budgets so that increased expenses on the one hand is balanced with decreased expenses on the other. “The biggest mistake consumers can make is to carry on with out-dated budgets that do not take extra expenses into account. The accumulated overflow will eventually result in additional credit card debt, which will be almost impossible to repay, unless their income is also suddenly increased,” says Olivier. Now is the time to balance your budget by saying no to those luxury expenses that are tipping your budget over the edge, such as fast food, pay TV, garden services, pool cleaning services and other luxury activities or items.

Olivier adds that it might also be a good idea to reduce payments on investments or retirement annuities. “And, if at all possible, try to earn an extra income – at least this will help with meeting all your obligations,” he says. DebtSafe recommends a few helpful tips to save fuel: • Use high quality fuels – using high quality fuels will allow the vehicle to run more efficiently. • Check your tyre pressure – correctly inflated tyres results increased mileage of approximately 3.3%. • When approaching a traffic light, ease your foot off the petrol and anticipate the lights to go red. By driving slowly already from a distance, you will use less fuel. The less you use the brake, the less fuel you use. • Turn off your air-con – an air conditioning unit requires more fuel and produces increased fuel emissions.

Enjoy Winter the Active Way with Vital Enjoy winter as much as you enjoy summer. To do this, you need to keep your immune system in tip-top shape. Did you know that staying active is one of the tricks to stave off seasonal colds and flu? And Vital, South Africa’s largest vitamin and nutritional supplements manufacturer, has just the right vitamins to keep you fighting fit through the chilly months. “The body relies on optimum nutrition to protect itself against invading cold and flu viruses during Winter,” explains Andrea du Plessis, Vital Health Foods’ nutrition expert. “Being active and exercising can increase your body’s needs for Vitamin C by 50% per day.”

Vital Maxi C Vitamins contain 1 000 mg of Vitamin C, which, taken twice daily when exercising, will fulfil your daily requirement. Next, you must build up your immune cells. Zinc is crucial in stimulating the immune system, as it boosts immune-cell production and activity. It’s also essential to maintain zinc quantities during exercise. “Long-term endurance training has been shown to significantly reduce Zinc levels, which in turn affects muscle function,” explains Elana Meyer, former Olympian and fitness expert. “So taking a Zinc supplement will not only help elevate your immune system, but also help prevent muscle fatigue.” For more information visit www.vital.co.za.

Vitamin C is therefore a key element in active Winter health. “Make sure to up your intake of Vitamin C, as combined with the colder temperatures in Winter, your body will not have enough Vitamin C to prevent and reduce the effects of any infections,” says du Plessis.

Let’s Dispel the Myths of Stem Cell Donation

Get your Beach Confidence Back!

The dates 15 August to 15 October are marked on the South African Health Calendar as Bone Marrow Stem Cell Donation and Leukaemia Awareness Months. During this time, we are not only given vital information on chronic blood disorders, but also encouraged to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) to help those searching for their life-saving donor. These dread diseases affect people all over the world, regardless of background, location, ethnicity, age or wealth. Sadly many South Africans are devastated when they are diagnosed with a life threatening blood disorder.

lose weight The DuraSlim Detox Capsules rids the body of toxins.

Unfortunately Leukaemia is the most prevalent of the 12 types of childhood cancers. Many children need stem cell transplants if they do not respond to treatment. In South Africa though, there is on average a 1:100 000 chance of finding an unrelated match within your ethnic group. If you become ill with a blood cancer that requires a stem cell transplant, here’s an uncomfortable fact: your race matters. For a successful transplant, donor and recipient must have nearly identical genes directly relating to their DNA and ethnic background. “We need to break the myth that stem cell donation is painful, resulting in many more people joining the SABMR. If you are ever a match, the process is actually much like donating blood and does not involve drilling into bones for bone marrow,” says Alana James, Chief Executive Officer for The Sunflower Fund.

Make a Bowl of Gloop! A few years back we made the most awesome discovery – Gloop. This is a fantastic preschool (and big brother, teenage sister and mommy) activity. Gloop is an interesting substance in that it can be used as a science activity, to explain solid and liquid concepts or it can be just be for fun! To make gloop you mix cornflour/corn starch/Maizena together then add some water to it. There is no exact recipe, but start with two cups of Maizena and slowly add one cup of water to it. It must be like a dense milkshake. It seems runny on top but as you scoop it, the mixture thickens. To add colour, add food colouring into the water before mixing.

little people sat and did not say a word for about three minutes! They tipped, scooped, dug, prodded, squeezed and explored. Besides keeping everyone busy for a good while, gloop is great for fine muscle development, colour mixing, science concepts, and great for building vocabulary.

We then gave each child their own bowl of gloop and some utensils, such as plastic knives, spoons, teaset cups and bowls.

Teach Children to Save Why is it that we never seem to teach our children enough about money and relationships? It’s the two things that most adults struggle with later on in life and is often the cause of stress and illness. It’s our responsibility as adults to show our youth how to be good with money. Here are six easy strategies: 1. Go online: Try www.starsaver.co.za – a great initiative in South Africa that teaches younger children how to save. Or try some online games where kids can learn financial literacy. 2. Give pre-teens and teenagers a monthly budget: Instead of giving them money when they want/need it, give them an allowance. Saying no to them when they’ve used up their money will teach them how to budget. 3. Pay them for certain chores: Obviously some chores are mandatory around the house, but you can devise other things that can be done for a price. This teaches children the value of work as a way of earning rewards. 4. Set up a clothing allowance. This can be linked to their monthly budget as discussed above – this will help them see the difference between blowing all their money on some brand item and saving for things they really need. 5. Teach them to save: We need to build a culture of saving – and it shouldn’t just be about money. Learning to be thrifty and frugal means we value everything else around us, food, water and our environment.
