The school holidays are now over and things PANEL N PAINT are getting back to normal in the Arthur *Courtesy household, as I hope they are for you too. Vehicles Available It’s so wonderful to spend precious time with *24 Hour Towing family and loved ones – especially with the Service children growing up so quickly! 14 Cypress Drive We have had a busy month as we have been to the UK visiting all our family and friends, with a family wedding thrown in there too – I am now ready for a proper holiday since I’ve driven thousands of miles over the last month, from London to Manchester and Wales to Yorkshire! I was so proud of my family all looking so smart at my sister’s wedding. Evie, my daughter, was a flower girl for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed herself and my handsome son, Jacob, was in a beautiful blue suit and looked divine, as did my hubby. I think I scrubbed up okay too. Funnily enough, there are not many photos of my husband and I but plenty of everyone else! We have completely over indulged and are now on a health kick to get fit and active again.

Oakleigh Life: 80 and Not Out
SUNCOAST
Most people would rather not think of the passing away of a loved one, but this does more to complicate the situation than anything else. Getting a funeral policy in place is a necessity that most of us can ill afford to ignore, especially when prices of funerals these days can easily cost well over R10 000 to R15 000. The need for funeral policies is not something that is purely confined to the elderly, yet most policies do not accommodate senior citizens. This is not the case with Oakleigh Life, a sister company to Oakleigh Funeral Home, where apart from providing cover for families, they also cover individuals past the age of 80. One such product, combined with a service offered by Oakleigh Funeral Home, offers limited protection against inflation. Their innovative policies are competitively priced and can also include living benefits such as an emergency medical benefit, intelligent panic and legal assist to name but a few. Local repatriation is also included free of charge.

In a time where many entities are trying to sell funeral policies, rest assured that the Oakleigh family is invested in the industry and unlike many others offers a holistic service – meaning they will walk you through every practical step of arranging a farewell for your loved one. In addition they also assist you with all aspects pertaining to the claim.

Business Life
Harry’s Secret Savings Harry kept his money to himself. During his nine-year marriage to Sally, he paid a half share of the rent, water and electricity. He also bought groceries every Sunday, choosing his favourite soups, tinned goods and fruit. These were presented to his wife with a flourish, as if he were providing her with all the necessities of a luxurious life. Sally, who earned less than Harry, spent far more on the household. She paid for everything else, including the maid, the bulk of the food and groceries, clothing, entertainment, insurance and all expenses for their little girl. She struggled, but she was never aware that this might not be necessary – she did not know what Harry earned and that he was keeping most of it to himself. He was hoarding the money, feeding a policy and a saving account. The marriage ended without scandal – there was simply no meaningful connection. She wanted more from life and decided to go. They agreed to divide the household – each took what they had brought into the marriage. Harry’s attorney issued the summons. Apart from the divorce and joint parental rights, he claimed ‘forfeiture of benefits’. He argued that Sally had not contributed towards his investments at all and that she would be ‘unduly benefited’ if she received a share. The court disagreed. Sally deserved her share of the joint estate, it held. She had worked hard, paid more of the expenses of the joint estate and had no savings only because Harry had been mean. He was ordered to pay her half the investments, maintenance for the child and all her legal costs. There is no ‘free love’. There is, occasionally, justice.

The Rights of the Child and the Hague Convention
South Africa is a signatory to the Hague Convention, which provides that, if a parent removes a child from his/her habitual place of residence without the other parent’s consent (where such consent is required), then the country to which the child has been removed must immediately return that child to his/her country of habitual residence. This is only applicable in circumstances where both countries are signatories to the Hague Convention. One of the very few exceptions to this rule is that if a child has become settled in his/her environment, then the court is not obliged to return the child.

A judgment was given in the Durban High Court ordering the mother to return the child and this order was appealed by her. By the time the matter came before the appeal court, threeand-a-half years had lapsed and the child was about nine years old. The appeal court held that the child had by all accounts settled in South Africa and that it would be “a shock to her [the child’s] system” to have to go back to Northern Ireland, and the court ordered that she could remain in South Africa.

Spanish Tortilla with Baby Marrow and Feta
TAFTA MEALS ON WHEELS
This is a great gluten-free recipe to try out.
Has cooking become an effort? We prepare meals and deliver to your door Monday to Friday for older people
All you need is: • 400g baby marrows (thinly sliced) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 3 large eggs • 100g feta cheese • Coarse salt and pepper to taste
What you have to do? Call TAFTA on 031 - 332 3721 This is a needs based service! Visit our website on: www.tafta.org.za
Method: • Heat a small non-stick pan with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add the thinly sliced baby marrow – season with salt and pepper and cook until a little golden. • Break eggs into a bowl and beat well and season. Stir the baby marrow and crumbled feta cheese into egg mix until the eggs are well coated. • Return pan to the heat – heat up the other tablespoon of olive oil and pour the egg mix into the pan. Cook the tortilla, loosening the edges from time to time – like an omelette – and let raw egg run underneath. The tortilla must get golden underneath and start to loosen when you shake the pan. • Place under heated grill and let the egg on the top set and become golden. Carefully slide onto serving plate and serve in wedges – warm or cold! Pheka – fresh simple cooking! Source: Danielle du Toit, Pheka, www.pheka.co.za, www.facebook.com/phekadurban. pheka

Support the Organ Donor Foundation’s Fun Walk Did you know that one person can save seven lives when they become an organ donor? This includes the use of one heart, two lungs, two kidneys, one liver and one pancreas. One donor can also improve the quality of life of up to 50 more people by donating their tissue – their skin, bone, heart valves and corneas. The problem is that unless someone is actually signed up as a donor, their organs cannot be used after they have passed on and the opportunity to save lives goes to waste. The Organ Donor Foundation (ODF) is a non-profit organisation with the aim of addressing the critical shortage of organ and tissue donors in South Africa through awareness and education. This foundation may not seem important or relevant to you at this stage, but when you or someone you know becomes ill, or is involved in an accident and needs an organ to save their life, the need becomes very real. That is why this is something that requires our attention and support.

Enjoy Winter the Active Way with Vital Enjoy Winter as much as you enjoy Summer. To do this, you need to keep your immune system in tip-top shape. Did you know that staying active is one of the tricks to stave off seasonal colds and flu? And Vital, South Africa’s largest vitamin and nutritional supplements manufacturer, has just the right vitamins to keep you fighting fit through the chilly months. “The body relies on optimum nutrition to protect itself against invading cold and flu viruses during Winter,” explains Andrea du Plessis, Vital Health Foods’ nutrition expert. “Being active and exercising can increase your body’s needs for Vitamin C by 50% per day.”
1 000 mg of Vitamin C, which, taken twice daily when exercising, will fulfil your daily requirement. Next, you must build up your immune cells. Zinc is crucial in stimulating the immune system, as it boosts immune-cell production and activity. It’s also essential to maintain zinc quantities during exercise. “Long-term endurance training has been shown to significantly reduce Zinc levels, which in turn affects muscle function,” explains Elana Meyer, former Olympian and fitness expert. “So taking a Zinc supplement will not only help elevate your immune system, but also help prevent muscle fatigue.”
Vitamin C is therefore a key element in active Winter health. “Make sure to up your intake of Vitamin C, as combined with the colder temperatures in Winter, your body will not have enough Vitamin C to prevent and reduce the effects of any infections,” says du Plessis. Vital Maxi C Vitamins contain

Hyperpigmentation: Part 2
Hyperpigmentation quite simply means BREAST CANCER? having too much pigment. It is a condition TALK TO A characterised by dark patches on the face and body. Hyperpigmentation occurs when SURVIVOR! there is excess melanin (pigment) production WE ARE HERE AS A by melanocytes (pigment producing cells) SUPPORT FOR YOU in the skin. Melanin is what gives each REACH FOR RECOVERY individual a unique skin tone and colour. BREAST CANCER Many factors can affect melanin production, however the three main contributors are hormone changes, sun exposure and injury to the skin, also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. As mentioned in last month’s article, the treatment of hyperpigmentation depends on whether your pigmentation is superficial or lies in the deeper layers of the skin. Superficial hyperpigmentation is treated with skin brightening and lightening cream, containing antioxidants such as Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), Arbutin, Kojic Acid and Liquorice extract, in addition to mild and medium depth AHA/BHA peels. Hyperpigmentation is however notoriously difficult to treat and will often require a combination of treatments including skin brightening agents and Tyrosinase inhibitors (ingredients that prevent melanin production by the melanocytes) such as hydroquinone, in addition to retinol (Vitamin A), which needs to be prescribed by your doctor. Ensure Your Children Buckle Up One of the biggest tragedies in South Africa is the preventable death of hundreds of children in cars on our roads each year. Too often parents do not secure their children while driving, and the consequences of this negligence are severe injuries and fatalities. The Automobile Association (AA) believes large reductions in traffic fatalities are possible if everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled up. Research has shown that wearing seatbelts reduces the risk of death in crashes by up to 72%.
The AA offers these tips on car seats and safe driving: • Before buying a car or booster seat, check that it is approved by the SABS. • Check that the car or booster seat is appropriate for your child’s age, weight and height. Remember that there is no ‘one size fits all’ car seat so check it for your child. Height and weight are extremely important as your child must fit properly in the car seat for it to be effective in the event of a collision. • Check the padding and head protection – car seats should also have side protection panels and padding. • Once installed, check that the car seat does not move around too much. Too much movement may make it ineffective in a collision. • Make sure that when your child is in the car seat, the straps do not pinch them but are not too loose. Your child should be comfortable, secure and safe.
Parents travelling with children should set the example and buckle up before leaving. All children in the vehicle must also wear seatbelts or be secured in car seats. For more information visit www.aa.co.za.

The Modern Cloth Nappy Revolution
geni Steam Railway Um“WITH CLASSIC DIESEL HAULAGE” Est. 1982
You may have heard of Modern Cloth Nappies (MCN). If you have, you’ll know that they’re taking South Africa, and the world, by storm. They’re simpler than ever before. MCNs come in a variety of styles, are made in a variety of fabrics and finding which one works best for you is part of the fun. Pockets: these include a Polyurethane Laminate (PUL) waterproof outer layer and a stay-dry inner layer, with a space (or pocket) between those two, in which inserts can be stuffed. They’re generally manufactured in bulk which means they’re a slightly ‘cheaper’ option. All-in-One (AIO): these are similar to pockets in that they have a waterproof layer, however, unlike pockets, their inserts are sewn in. This makes them very easy to use and less time consuming. Their downfall is that they take a little longer to dry. All-in-Two (AI2): these have a waterproof shell and an absorbent insert. Unlike a pocket nappy, the nappy insert goes directly against the baby’s skin. When the insert becomes wet, you simply change it instead of washing the entire nappy. Fitted: This MCN is shaped like a disposable, however because it lacks a waterproof layer, it requires a waterproof cover. Hybrid: these contain a hidden fleece layer, which makes them semi-waterproof. They can be worn without a cover, depending on how heavy a wetter your little one is. These nappies are breathable and are great for around the home.

Teach Children to Save Why is it that we never seem to teach our children enough about money and relationships? It’s the two things that most adults struggle with later on in life and is often the cause of stress and illness. It’s our responsibility as adults to show our youth how to be good with money. Here are six easy strategies: 1. Go online: Try www.starsaver.co.za – a great initiative in South Africa that teaches younger children how to save. Or try some online games where kids can learn financial literacy. 2. Give pre-teens and teenagers a monthly budget: Instead of giving them money when they want/need it, give them an allowance. Saying no to them when they’ve used up their money will teach them how to budget. 3. Pay them for certain chores: Obviously some chores are mandatory around the house, but you can devise other things that can be done for a price. This teaches children the value of work as a way of earning rewards. 4. Set up a clothing allowance. This can be linked to their monthly budget as discussed above – this will help them see the difference between blowing all their money on some brand item and saving for things they really need. 5. Teach them to save: We need to build a culture of saving – and it shouldn’t just be about money. Learning to be thrifty and frugal means we value everything else around us, food, water and our environment. 6. Encourage them to get a part-time job: This will show them what it’s like to work to earn money and importantly, the value of that money. SWISH Dance Studio Accomplished dancer, Cathy Barry started “SWISH Studios” (Showtime With Shine) in 2009 at the Sun City complex, as she felt there was a need for an inspiring after school activity for children living in Sun City. This studio proved to be a huge success. In 2011, Cathy returned to her home town and decided to re-open SWISH in beautiful Ballito. A fantastic first year was had, with SWISH taking part in the Natal Dance Festival (2013), with most of her entries being placed, and an extremely successful and sold out studio show held in the Pumpkin Theatre. This competition success continued in both 2014 and 2015.

Within a mere three years in Ballito, SWISH has grown more than 100%, which has enabled Cathy to get her own premises at The Workstation in Umhlali. This has also enabled Cathy to join forces with husband, Alan Barry, in order to offer a larger spectrum of activities for their pupils. SWISH now offers modern dance, ballet, fitness classes, Ju-jitsu, ladies’ self-defence, burlesque, hip hop, ‘hiphoppersize’ and much more for both adults and children. Going from strength to strength, SWISH is a competitive family-run company, whose services are given with passion, attention to detail and always with that personal touch. “Cathy has been instrumental in helping my daughter, Evie, to settle into a new dance group and her new life in SA – she now truly feels like she belongs here, especially with her dance classes. We love it so much that we still travel three times a week from Mount Edgecombe to Umhlali and we will not consider moving studios – she’s that good!” – Victoria Arthur. The Importance of Music in Baby Development Even while in the womb a baby reacts to music, which is why it’s so important for parents to play music to their baby and for them to engage their baby actively with music, especially during a baby’s first year. Erika Woodman, Creative Director of GoBabyClub points out why music is important in baby development and gives parents some great tips and advice. Research shows that music can improve a baby’s ability to understand speech, which is the foundation for reading and writing skills. Music such as lullabies even helps prepare us for sleep. The legato movement of lullabies helps a baby to achieve a soothing emotional state, whilst music that is more up-beat in rhythm activates a baby’s movements, visual focus and attention. Other areas of baby development, which are positively affected by music and where a baby benefits from early engagement with music, include: • Improved performance in Mathematics, Sciences and Languages • Higher IQ levels • Stronger emotional awareness • Positive self-esteem • Better memory • Improved motor skills

Ocean View Montessori
Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow The Montessori Junior Primary Programme is designed with respect for the mind of the rapidly developing child. No longer content with the physical independence achieved in pre-school, the child now strives for intellectual independence. This is a time of insatiable curiosity and excitement for learning. Primary school aged children realise that the world is an enormous and fascinating place and they are primed to build their knowledge – the world becomes their classroom. It is for this reason that past and existing parents have requested that Ocean View Montessori establish a junior primary school and they have been encouraged and inspired by the success of Montessori Primary Schools worldwide and throughout Africa. Children will gain a firm foundation in the three Rs (reading, writing and arithmetic) which will be extended through the areas of nature study, history, geography and technology and science, often lacking in
the junior primary phase in the traditional classroom. Art, music and drama are also included as a very important part of the school day, along with swimming, P.E. and ball skills. The development of independence is the key to success in all future endeavours. Within the nurturing and respectful learning environment the children learn skills for daily living, such as cooking, gardening, DIY and sewing. They are taught to develop conflict resolution skills to encourage emotional independence. Thinking skills, problem solving and time management are all developed effectively to ensure an independent approach to education. The Montessori teacher is the loving guide on this journey, always ensuring that individual needs are met and group skills are enhanced. There will be time for challenges, successes, fun, laughter and friendships. Contact: 031 – 564 4609, www.oceanviewmontessoripre-school. co.za.

‘Tutu Cute’ Birthday Party August is here and this month we celebrate all things ‘woman’! As an all-ladies team of planners, Posh Events loves nothing more than creating a classy celebration for the littlest ladies. And so, they present to you the ‘low-down’ on the ‘how-tos’ for a Posh pink ballerina party:
TAilorEd PACkAgES • Adult Parties/ Corporate Events • Balloon Artistry • Airbrush Tattoos • A Photographer
Face Painting
• Skin care and hygiene is top priority • Paints safe to use • EU-compliant products • Waterbased/easy to remove • Parties also available during school hours
• Décor is your key to bringing this theme to life. Layer a sparkly silver or gold table runner over a beautiful white table cloth. Place a few small mirror-boxes along the runner, with small pink floral arrangements. Little ballet shoes make for beautiful props, so stand a pair next to each mirror-box. Finish off the table with place settings of teacups and saucers. • As guest favours, place little gold wands and beautifully packaged tutu hair ties on each place setting. • Instead of the usual chair cover, simply slide a tutu over the backrest, and tie a bow around the waistband. • A creative sweetie table is always a winner for girls and moms. Pink and white marshmallows, cake pops and cupcakes displayed in glass jars with tutu detail are perfect dainty delights for little dames. A floral wreath, resting under a glass cloche with little ballet shoes dangling from the cloche, is the perfect finishing touch to your display. • Tutu bunting will assist in creating a party atmosphere, along with tulle-wrapped balloons tied with large ribbon bows.

Host a Bug Themed Party! Hairy Spider Sandwiches These little guys make brilliant party snacks for kids and are super easy to make. You need: • One slice of bread with butter or margarine on both sides • Round cookie cutter (or small cup) • Chocolate vermicelli – chocolate sprinkles • Thin liquorice laces • Any edible eyes Method: • Cut out two bread rounds • Place liquorice legs onto bottom round, add any filling you wish (peanut butter for example) and stick the two together. • Dip bread into sprinkles to coat. • Add eyes!
• Birthday Parties • Fun Science Club Extra-mural Activities • Science Shows & Workshops for Schools
And just like that you have little sandwich spiders! Crazy Bug Hats Give the kids pipe cleaners, pompom balls, construction paper, glue, a stapler, feathers, beads, markers and other craft materials. Have the kids make bug hats and make up a big name for themselves. When they are done, have a bug fashion show so they can all show off their hats. Choose the best hat and give the winner a prize.

Go on a Bug Hunt Buy a bag of small plastic bugs and hide them in the garden before the party. Give each child a bug bag and a short stick. The kids have to find as many bugs as they can and get them into their bags without using their hands – only the stick. The one with the most bugs wins. The kids can take home the bugs they find.
