Readers’ Life • Thank you to Mum’s Mail and the sponsors of the Shopkins hamper, which I won for my daughter. It came at the most opportune time as it was my daughter Kera’s 8th birthday party this weekend. I gave her the box of Shopkins in the morning and she was “over the moon” with joy. It set a brilliant tone for the rest of the day and her Karaoke/ Dance party at home was a great success. She can’t believe she has so many Shopkins now. She especially loves the Shopkins doll. Thank you for this amazing lucky draw. Brenda Craig. • I am a new reader of your magazine. I started receiving the magazine this year from my child’s new crèche, Roselle Pre Primary. It has only been two months, but I have gained so much valuable information. Keep up the good work. Zakithi Nkosi. • My daughter has just started pre-school and I’ve just received my FIRST e-news magazine. I’m super excited for the ones that are to come (more help for me). I don’t need Google when I’ve got you guys. Keep up the amazing work! Zintle Diko.

R3 000 Grocery Challenge So last month, we spent under R3 000 on Eat when you’re hungry – not bored: A good groceries - all food. How did we do it? old Michael Pollan Food Rule. Meal plan: Meal planning not only takes away that frustrating ‘Gah, what are we eating tonight’ thought around 4pm each day, but it removes the spontaneous buying… and it doesn’t need to be complicated – just jot down some meal ideas and shuffle it as you go through the week…
Don’t get sucked into consumer culture: We walk around with our shiny, smooth (tired) credit cards and nonchalantly swipe, swipe, swipe. Put R3 000 in an envelope labelled ‘GROCERIES’ and you will avoid the shops like the plague. We are SO accustomed to buying what we want, when we want it.

How Your Fashion Choices Affect Your Posture
Poor posture is becoming more and more apparent in our high stress, fast paced, instant messaging lifestyle. With technology and fashion developing, we need to rethink how we are doing everything. Why wear high heels? Why have such a heavy handbag? Why is bra choice so important?
curvature of the spine when looking at it front on. This also occurs in your kids, with their heavy school bags.
Before answering the WHYs‌ we need to know what normal posture is. When looking at the side of your body; you should have a straight line down your ear, tip of shoulder, hip and knee to the ankle. When looking at the front of your body; you should have a straight line down your nose, chin, sternum, belly button and pubic bone, dividing the body into two equal halves. High heels put excessive pressure on the ball of your foot and they lean the body forward, which results in a host of problems; excessive pressure on your knees, the lower back arches, rotating your hips forward and pushing your spine out of alignment. Your chest and head are then pushed forward and the calf muscle is put under tension. Long term heel usage can result in bunions, hammer toes and Achilles tendonopathy.
Your bra! Remember your breast size fluctuates at various times of your menstrual cycle, increases with weight gain or vice versa. Large breasts cause rounded shoulders, collapse of the mid back and forward projection of the neck. A wider strap that sits on the boney end of your shoulder (not the muscle) is best. Make sure the strap is not too thin to avoid pressure on the muscles leading to muscle spasm, headaches and rounded shoulder posture. Wrong sized bras can cause all sorts of problems and without the correct support you can end up in some serious pain as well as exacerbate your posture problems. Get measured professionally. The good news? Posture can be corrected! Your fashion choices can be changed in a few small ways that can result in a big change. Visit your nearest chiropractor or medical professional for advice. Dr Sayed, who has an interest in neonatology, addressed the myths on post-natal care as well as some of the more serious topics like colic and jaundice. Dr Moodley, a specialist paediatric nephrologist, provided an informative talk on some of the risk factors of chronic kidney disease. Thereafter the resident physiotherapist, Mrs S Moodley and a dietician, Miss J Ernest provided some informative talks on pregnancy, helpful exercises and insight into healthy eating. The hospital was proud to be included in this exciting journey with the mumsto-be and the event allowed them to showcase their well renowned maternity and NICU units, which are well-established and recognised for their excellent facilities and nursing care. Lucky draws and raffles also created a buzz at the event, as well as the maternity bags received by each mum-to-be. The event was a great success and provided relevant information, as well as a bit of fun for the audience. Hair Care Tips Stick with one system of shampoo and conditioner While it may seem wise to pick a shampoo from one line, a conditioner from another, and a hair mask from another, getting the best of both worlds, it doesn’t necessarily work like that. Since products that are part of a hair care system are typically formulated to be used together, you’ll see the best results by doing just that. Save playing mix master for your makeup, and stick to using a system that suits your hair type. Turn down the temp in the shower Steaming showers are no doubt relaxing, but they aren’t what’s best for your hair. When you let the water get too hot, it can strip your hair of natural moisture, leaving you with dry hair. Next time you hop into the shower, dial the water down to lukewarm.
Wear your hair loose Sporting hairstyles that are overly tight can put stress on your hair and your head, leading to breakage. They may seem like the easiest styles to get your hair up and out of your face, but don’t let that keep you from rocking a looser style. Embrace your natural hair texture Heat tools can result in some of our favourite styles, from perfect curls to super-straight strands, but they aren’t always kind to your hair. Reach for them too much, and you can risk damaging your hair. Instead of heat styling your hair all the time, embrace your natural texture with heat free products that encourage air drying. And for the days when you just can’t resist the lure of a heat tool, be sure to use a heat protectant. Source: www.lorealparisusa.com.

Reviving the Windows to the Soul We all know the saying that the eyes are the windows to one’s soul, but where does one start if our eye area looks tired and aged? Firstly, focus on eye-care products. Use products that are specifically formulated to the eye area as well as to one’s specific skin condition. If you have oily skin, an eye gel would be a suitable, but for a dry skin, an eye cream is recommended. Look out for products containing Vitamin C to brighten, peptides to boost and revive and a small amount of Vitamin A to restructure the delicate skin.

Next up, tint your eyelashes. It gives the lashes more ‘depth’ as it colours the lash from root to tip and is ideal for people with very light eyelashes as well as those that don’t like wearing mascara. If you have naturally long lashes, try out a keratin lash lift. This treatment nourishes your natural lash and sets them in an upward position, much like using an eye lash curler. For those that want to have fuller and longer lashes or have very little, short and/ or damaged eyelashes, try out a product that promotes growth and conditions the eyelashes. Lastly, if you don’t like wearing mascara, have sensitive eyes, would like more volume or a more dramatic effect, treat yourself to a set of professional eyelash extensions. Your therapist can tailor these extensions to your specifications. Contact: Doris Coetzer, Skin Evolution, 032 - 586 1402, 071 535 1043, info@ skinevolution.co.za, www.skinevolution. co.za. Artwork is Hard Work from the Heart
My daughter Amy loves to paint and craft. Every day she spends time in the craft room and comes home with an assortment of different creations. After class she proudly tells me that she made artwork that we need to collect. Our little girl pronounces it as a combination of “heartwork” and “hardwork.” Even though I do correct her, I have to admit I find this pronunciation pretty cute. Isn’t it so true that art is actually both of those things combined… its hard work that comes from the heart!
it brings us all a little smile on dreary days. When I get a new one to stick up I make sure to tuck the other one away safely for her record book (which I still promise myself I will get around to some day). So, the question is, what do we do with the other artwork? Not all of them are worth saving for the record book, yet knowing how much heart and hard work she puts into her art, and seeing how proud she is of each of the art creations, I find it difficult to throw them out.
Do any of you have budding artists, and But as any parent knows, all artwork isn’t what do you do with all of the art that comes created equal. Maths is Crucial to Your Child’s Development Marlene Mouton, Chairlady of A+ Students, recently pointed out that although half of the jobs in 10 years’ time have still not been ‘invented’, the one thing they will all have in common is maths. According to Mouton, maths and more especially the understanding of math concepts during the early foundation and development stages is of paramount importance to ensure a child is prepared for the future and the job or career the child will embark on. At A+ Students maths and mental arithmetic is taught through play, which assists the learning process as well as stimulating left and right brain development. These aspects are crucial in a child’s early leaning stages and with over 30 000 student enrolments to date, A+ is the leader in its field of teaching maths and mental arithmetic through the use of the abacus.
Mouton added that although there are 620 teaching venues across South African there is so much scope for growth such as in KZN where there is currently a drive to find and appoint franchisees who have a passion for teaching young children whilst operating a profitable successful business. A+ Students is a Japanese method of education that teaches children as young as two-and-a-half to solve complex arithmetic problems by playing with educational toys like the Soroban and their A+ Play Maths range of educational toys. How to Manage Your Children’s Playground Scuffles It is normal for young children to experience difficulty with sharing, taking turns and identifying roles within groups when playing together. It is important for them to practice the skills needed to resolve conflict in order for it to become second nature for them throughout their lives. With the correct guidance from parents, even very young children can learn basic conflict resolution skills. All parents handle playground incidents differently. Some parents are relaxed and allow their children to play freely on the playground and sort out their own fights, while others keep a watchful eye and get involved at the slightest sign of danger or conflict. When conflict arises it is important that the children involved get the opportunity to tell their side of the story, while the others listen without interrupting. Once each child has had their turn to speak, the parent can then simplify the problem for the children in a sentence or two in order to state the problem clearly. For example, if Jessica and Natalie were fighting over a swing, one could say: “Jessica and Natalie it sounds like you both would like a turn on this swing. Is that right?” The children should then be given an opportunity to suggest a solution to the problem, even if one or more children have the same idea, for example “What do you boys/girls think we can do to fix the
problem?” Children should once again be reminded to listen while the others are talking. Next, facilitate a discussion whereby the group is encouraged to choose the best solution. Once an appropriate suggestion has been agreed upon, the children should be commended on working together to solve their problem. They are then free to go implement the chosen solution. Parents should observe the children playing to ensure that no further conflict arises. If the solution does not appear to be working, the group should be given the opportunity to renegotiate a different solution. Children require repeated practice in order to develop conflict resolution skills. Conflict resolution is an important social skill that helps them become more aware of and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. A child’s self-confidence is developed when they learn to solve their problems in a positive and assertive way. They develop valuable communication and listening skills while also learning to think creatively and evaluate solutions. Let Your Child Choose Early School Years Extra Murals They Love Crucial For Cultivating Last week, my 13-year-old cousin asked me Emotional Intelligence for advice about choosing high-school extramurals. I, obviously, wanted to give her the advice I never had, like “Do these because then you’ll make more friends and I regret not doing this, so you should do it.” However, the two of us are completely different. What I loved she could very well hate. I realised this as I was going on and on about how she must try all the things I wish I had done.
In the end, the best thing she could do would be to ignore all my well-meant advice and, instead, choose the activities she has an interest in. Nowadays, there are so many different extracurriculars to choose from which makes the choice all the more difficult. There’s also always someone, a friend or family member, who has their heart set on the new high-schooler doing some extramural so that they can live vicariously through that.
Of the twelve years that children spend at school, the foundation phase – years one through four – are the most critical for cementing the long-term potential of children and enabling them to become successful adults, an education expert says. “It goes without saying that academic excellence is important, but developing children’s emotional intelligence may literally make the difference between success and failure in their lives,” says Chris Van Niekerk, head at Founders Hill College, part of Africa’s largest private education provider, ADvTECH. He says that when undertaking the important task of investigating schooling options, parents and guardians should consider more than the academic or sporting achievements and track record of a school, and also enquire about a school’s approach to instilling vital life skills. “Nurturing emotional intelligence should be considered as important as teaching children to read, write and do arithmetic – if not more – and schools, parents and communities have a duty to ensure this fundamental life skill is not left by the wayside,” he says.
I’m of the opinion that the after school activities teach just as much as the actual school lessons. These activities are not trivial or just for fun, and that makes the choice between them so much more difficult. Parents worry about what their child commits to and often get involved in Van Niekerk says the younger the age at which children acquire these insights and that choice. skills, the better. Emotional intelligence can I believe that children shouldn’t listen to be described as a set of softer skills that anyone’s enthusiastic advocacy for one help children grow up to become “likeable”, activity or subject, but rather choose exactly successful human beings who can accept what they themselves enjoy the most. If you that not everybody in the world is going to try everything and continue with the things be like you, agree with you or think like you. that give you a buzz (not your parents, More than this, it’s understanding that this uncles, cousins, but YOU) - you won’t have diversity is not only good and desirable, but to be celebrated and embraced. any regrets! Tips to Create a Healthy, Balanced Lunchbox 1. Use the food nutrient groups as a checklist: • Carbohydrates: low GI bread, wholewheat wraps, brown rice, brown pasta. • Protein: grilled chicken strips, cheese, boiled egg, tuna, steak strips, feta. • Vegetables: carrot/cucumber/celery sticks and salad veggies. • Fruits: fresh apple, banana, grapes. • Healthy fats: nuts, seeds, lite mayonnaise, hummus. • Dairy: yoghurt, milk or cheese. Examples: • Whole grain bread filled with tuna, light mayonnaise and veggies such as lettuce and tomato. A side of carrot and cucumber sticks, and a yoghurt and fruit serving. • Whole grain bread filled with cheese and veggies such as lettuce and tomato. A side of carrot and cucumber sticks with a hummus dip and a fruit serving.
www.mumsmail.com
2. It is important for children to stay hydrated Water is always the best option. Add slices of fresh fruit and refrigerate overnight for a natural flavour. If fruit juice is consumed this must be 100% pure fruit juice and diluted so that it is half juice and half water. 3. Planning and preparation is vital If you are usually rushed for time in the morning, prepare lunch the night before. You can even use dinner leftovers of a protein, carbohydrate and veg and just add a fruit and yoghurt serving.

Posh Elegance for Easter
Easter brings with it some much-loved family celebrations and quality time spent together. Not to mention the belly-laughs, family feasts, and sugar highs! Naturally, such an occasion calls for a beautiful table setting or two... We love pairing contrasting elements to create a posh touch of drama - shimmering glassware against a natural wooden table top or a soft, elegant whisper of white fauxfur, highlighting opulent fresh flowers in vivid colours and polished cutlery resting on crisp, clean linen napkins... A beautiful combination of simple elements turns a simple setup into an elegant tablescape. Personalised elements are a fun way of adding a thoughtful touch. Whether a simple name tag or an extravagant guest favour, personalised details go a long way in creating the perfect event setting. Nothing says “I treasure you” quite like a decadent display of carefully prepared
www.mumsmail.com
desserts. Carry over the elegant theme from your table décor, and create a secondary table nearby. A playful touch to the dessert display contrasts the elegant, more serious table setting beautifully - glass cylinders overflowing with soft marshmallows, or delightful, colourful petit fours on mirrored platters, or mini meringue nests filled with little chocolate eggs, to name a few. Enjoy an elegant, blessed Easter with your family and friends. Make new memories, enjoy those belly laughs and treasure the little things.

Science Experiment: Hot Ice
Did you know ice can be hot? In this experiment, you’ll find out how different chemicals freeze at different temperatures with two ingredients from your kitchen! Supplies: • 3 cups (705ml) white vinegar • Small pot • 3 to 4 tablespoons baking soda • Spoon • Plastic container with lid The experiment: In the sink, pour the vinegar into your pot. Slowly add the baking soda a little at a time, stirring with the spoon. Don’t pour it in too quickly, or you’ll get a messy baking soda volcano! Put the pot on the stove over a high heat. Boil the solution to concentrate it, until a crystal skin starts to form on the surface. This might take an hour or so and your liquid might change colour to yellow or brown. After the crystals form on the surface, remove the pot from the heat and carefully pour the solution into a container. Take a look at the liquid. Do you see crystals floating in it? If so, stir a very small amount of water or vinegar
into the solution, just sufficient to dissolve the crystals. Put the lid on the container and put it in the fridge to chill. Check your pot – there should be some leftover crystals on the edge. Scrape some of these out and put them on a plate. After a couple of hours, take your liquid out of the fridge. It should be a liquid still. Drop the scrapings from your pot into the liquid and watch! Now touch the side of your container. The outcome: Your “ice” will be warm when it meets with more of the crystals. Why it worked: When you combine the vinegar and baking soda and put it over heat, you made a concentrated solution of sodium acetate. Sodium acetate freezes at 60°C. When you chilled it to below its melting point, it caused the liquid to form crystals, or hot ice. Source: The 101 Coolest Simple Science Experiments by Rachel Miller, Holly Homer & Jamie Harrington.

microwave-safe bowl and heat for 25 to 30 seconds. Stir well, and repeat heating as needed. Add the melted coconut oil and vanilla extract to the marshmallows and stir well to incorporate. Add the rice cereal a cup at a time, gently folding it into the marshmallow mixture, until all of the cereal is incorporated. Scoop 1/4 cup portions of the Rice Krispie treats into the prepared muffin tray. Wet your hands and press the Rice Krispies into a cup or tart-shape. Place in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight to set. When the nests have had a chance to set and harden, pop them out of the muffin tray using a butter knife and fill with treats. We used mini eggs but jellybeans or some berries would also be delicious. Source: www.amandascookin.com. Twinkie Bunny Pops • Twinkie snack cakes • Royal icing Eyes • Paper straws • White frosting • Pink frosting • Pink sweets Method: Cut a triangle from one end of the Twinkie. Use frosting as glue to attach eyes. Pipe whiskers onto the cake. Pipe pink frosting onto the cake in the shape of ears and mouth. Add a bit more frosting where the nose should go and attach a pink sweet. You have one cute bunny! Make the Twinkie into a cake pop by pushing a paper straw into the bottom of the Twinkie. Make sure the bunny stays on the stick by tying a bow onto the straw. A super festive treat for Easter!

Create Your Own Nature Exhibit
Aqua: The Aussie Circus Spectacular
This is a great way to get the kids playing outside in nature, rather than sitting in front of the TV these holidays! How about I took my husband and impressing everyone with your budding our son, Oliver (4) to natural scientist skills by creating a mini see Aqua: The Aussie exhibition? Circus Spectcular recently. We had no First, you’ll need to get together your idea what to expect – I just knew it was a explorer kit. You can probably do without the circus that involved water. Well, were we in tent or pith helmet, but it could prove useful for a treat! I was worried that Oliver would to have a few bags or pots for putting your get bored (ha ha) and lose interest during specimens in, as well as a magnifying glass to the two-hour show. Boy was I wrong – he take a closer look at them and a notebook to was ENTHRALLED throughout the show, as scribble down where you found your various discoveries. were we! This breath-taking show, presented in a purpose-built water stage, showcases dazzling costumes and amazing special effects for an unforgettable experience! This state-of-the-art touring production provides the setting for an epic performance. Expect acrobats, aerialists, illusionists, comedians, and daredevils to delight and thrill audiences, leaving them in awe. We especially loved the clown who picked on my husband a few times. He was really entertaining and funny and Oliver thought he was just the best – he even had a photo taken with him after the show!
When you have finished gathering your outdoor treasures, you can use trays, or even make your own divided specimen box to display them in your exhibition. You could try finding different rocks and stones and see if you can identify each type. Or make a collection of seeds and nuts and write down what each will grow into. At the seaside, why not amass a collection of shells and research which creatures used to live in each? In fact, you can create all sorts of different displays. One word of advice, though; an ‘animal droppings’ exhibit might not be a great idea!
This really is a show for the whole family – young and old will be captivated by this Tip: for smaller exhibits, you can use an old ice-cube tray to display your finds. visually stunning world of AQUA! DIY Salt Dough Eggs Recipe for salt dough 1 cup flour 1/2 cup salt 1/2 cup water Stir together all three ingredients until a dough forms. Kneading the dough a couple times can help make it smoother. International Children’s Book Day Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday is on 2 April and since 1967 International Children’s Book Day has been celebrated on or around this day to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children’s books. This is truly a great way to share the importance of reading and love for books. Nowhere is the joy of reading more magical than when a young child picks up a book for the first time, balances the book on their knees and enters an enchanting world. Most of us can remember entering a readathon or supporting Friends of the Library – these are some milestones in a reader’s life, a rite of passage that we take for granted. There really is nothing better than giving a child a book and letting them start a journey of self-discovery and love for literature. In celebration of International Children’s Book Day, Bargain Books wants to bring these magical experiences to one lucky reader by giving away a hamper of books valued at R1000.
