Fighting to Keep KZN Beaches Clean KZN Beach Clean-up was founded in 2011 by a couple of friends. One of the founders is Natalie Gorven, a Durban local. Being a surfer, Natalie said the ocean and beaches bring her so much joy and are very close to her heart, so she was inspired to give back in whatever way she could. She has been passionate about the environment since she can remember and has volunteered for organisations like Ezemvelo. “I will spend the rest of my life helping in whatever way I can to protect Mother Nature, who so selflessly continues to sustain us, despite all we do,” said Gorven.

If you are looking for a loyal and loving companion AACL has the perfect puppy waiting for you to adopt!

Durban Beach Clean-up was started when Ingrid Butcher and a friend wanted to get a group of friends together for a once-off clean-up. Based on the positive response they received via social media, they decided to hold beach clean-ups on a monthly basis. Various sponsors came on board, such as Tuffy Brands, Island Tribe, Wasteman, Gig Network Solutions and even ECR. The initiative has grown substantially and they have “upgraded” to KZN Beach Clean-up, increasing their scope to include beaches both North and South of Durban, as well as local estuaries and waterways. Beach clean-ups are held once a month, usually the third Saturday of the month, at a different location each time. The clean-ups start at 9am and end at 11am. KZN Beach Clean-up supplies bags, gloves, sunscreen and liquid refreshments. All trash collected is weighed and as much as possible is recycled. For more information or to get involved, contact 076 610 2707 or follow them on Facebook: KznBeachCleanup or Twitter: @kznbeachcleanup.

For some, the decision to ‘shut down’ would be a form of passive euthanasia and be contradictory to their value system. Many approach this challenge with a deepset faith in God and are given strength and comfort to make the best decision. It is for these reasons that I invite you to consider the option of a living will, thereby assisting your loved ones to be able to make an informed decision. Fortunately the medical world is beginning to work with, rather than against, families in these matters. Written by Dallas Gilbert. I must say I was really relieved to hear you complain about the cost of movies – I was under the impression that we were really poor because I find it so expensive to have a night at the movies, with us being a family of six! During the holidays we hire a lot of movies, Mitchell Park is another of our favourites, and we have many get-togethers with each of us making one dish to share so as not to burden one person. The dinner-cirque spectacular promises to dazzle with an exhilarating new show, a decadent new menu and a mesmerising new interior. All the magic you’d expect from South Africa’s ultimate night out, plus a little extra. Housed in one of the last remaining antique mirror-tents in the world, the new interior takes the theme of an enchanted forest, while audiences can expect the best of unique local and international acts. The passion of red hot Argentinian Gauchos, the poise and grace of the Russian bar, the jaw-dropping Guinness World Record holding Icarian foot jugglers and mesmerizing aerial acts of strength and agility take the stage, along with the hilarious antics of Hot Mr C and his mischievous companion, the Absinthe Fairy. The show runs until 30 April and tickets range from R390 to R495 per person. We thoroughly enjoyed the show, having been a few years ago when they first toured Durban. Having embraced the dress up theme to the max, I was amused when one of the guests tried to order drinks from me, as he mistook me for one of the waitresses!

Toxic Ante-Nuptial Contracts

AK

So, you are married out of community of property, in terms of an ante-nuptial contract. Is it safe, accurate and legal? Could your contract be deeply flawed? In a recent case, the Supreme Court of Appeal declared an ante-nuptial contract to be void and they set it aside. The couple’s marriage was declared to be in community of property. Since marrying, they had thought that they each owned their own, separate, individual assets. There is security in knowing that you have separate assets and liabilities. You can deal with your own stuff without seeking the opinion, or consent, of your spouse. You cannot be held liable for one another’s debts. You are separate and an individual, the captain of your ship, financiallyspeaking. You can still share if you choose to, or not. What if it all changed suddenly? That’s what happened in the case above. They found themselves in a different place from the place they had imagined. Following this court case, such disasters will happen more frequently. There are many ante-nuptial contracts that do not achieve their goals, many that are, in fact, almost identical to the one that was found to be so deeply flawed. Mainly, because neither the about-to-be-married parties, nor even their attorney, understood what they were doing when they signed their contract. Storage time: Store the sauce for three days in a refrigerator or up to three months frozen in a deep freeze. It can be used as a pizza base or as a base for different pasta sauces. Tomato growing hints: • Do not over feed the plants with all kinds of additives. Compost-enriched, well-draining soil is fine. Only feed with a fertiliser rich in phosphorous and calcium at planting time, and again when the plants are in flower. • Never water over the leaves, only water at soil level. • Small varieties can grow very well in pots. Keep Your Pool Warm All Year with Hi Temp Solar Solutions Hi Temp manufactures and distributes grid tie and interactive photovoltaic solar electricity systems, swimming pool heating solar collector panels, evacuated glass tube hot water solar systems and titanium heat pump water heating. With Hi Temp solar heating your pool can be used for eight months, or more, of the year. With Hi Temp SOLAR and energy from the sun, you can use your pool from August through to May. Solar heating is now so affordable from Hi Temp and the value of your house escalates with this feature installed. The installation takes less than one day – no mess, no fuss and no people walking through your house. Advantages of Hi Temp Solar Heating Panels • No moisture build-up under collectors that could cause premature roof deterioration. • Hi Temp’s unique design virtually eliminates wind load, making it ideal for windy provinces. • Collector is easy to install and operate. • Repairs can easily be done on-site. • It has a 12 year warranty. How the Hi Temp System Works Hi Temp Solar Panels (made of durable and hard-wearing HDPE) are fitted to the roof. Water from the pool is channeled through the panels and is heated by the sun’s rays. The water is then returned to the pool by the existing pool pump. With such an efficient system, temperatures between 22°C and 41°C are achieved. This system not only absorbs heat directly from the sun, but absorbs heat by conduction from your roof. In effect, the roof becomes part of the solar system. Don’t Let Power Cuts Get You Down!

One thing about being a South African is that we can adapt very quickly to change. Although load shedding is very disruptive and extremely inconvenient, we have learned to work within the system. It has affected things like deliveries and service calls, as there have been delays, but at the same time, it has started to educate consumers about energy efficient products. There has been a swing towards products that use less electricity and less water, such as washing machines, shower heads and dishwashers, and when less water is used, less electricity is also used, which will benefit the consumer in the long-term. Allan Hirsch believes that the average consumer is a bit wary – the last time they bought generators and standby lights, load shedding came to an end, so some are a bit cautious to invest in generators this time around. The reality is we have to be prepared! All Hirsch stores are fully operational, as they are connected to generators and function normally during load shedding hours.

Have you not had enough of this crime? If so, why not then use your cell phone to help fight it and keep your hands clean? Your eyes and cell are your only involvement. See how many other residents in your area are already taking part. JOIN THEM! Let’s fight this crime together!

Hirsch’s has noticed an increase in the sale of gas appliances. Apart from their practical use during load shedding, some other pros that should be taken into consideration when buying gas are: • The gas flame heats the sides and the bottom of pans thus cooking food faster. • Temperature can be changed rapidly. • There is less ambient heat to the rest of the kitchen. • There is more even stove-top heat for cooking. COLLECTOR’S WORLD

The Federation of Women’s Institute (FWI) has been serving the community of Kwazulu-Natal for more than 86 years. Their motto is “For Home and Country” and the FWI organisation is based on the ideals of fellowship, truth, tolerance and justice. They have many groups throughout KZN that have played a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities, the chance to build new skills, to campaign on issues that matter to them and they strive to improve and better the lives of those less fortunate. They knit jerseys, beanies, booties and soft toys for needy children and CANSA patients and squares for blankets and bed socks for the elderly. They contribute to Meals on Wheels, Cerebral Palsy and make and fill comfort bags for rape victims, to name but a few projects they are involved in. They run development classes where they teach rural people new skills in order to help them become self-sustaining. They hold Women’s Forums and drama and musical evenings. All WIs meet once a month to have fellowship, discuss projects, learn and share new skills and listen to interesting speakers and demonstrations. It’s all about fellowship and meeting likeminded people. They arrange outings and getaways and have a tremendous amount of fun and laughter. They appeal to women of all ages who are passionate about their communities to bring something to their table. This is an awesome organisation – go along and see for yourself! Rainbows and Smiles Childhood Cancer Foundation Rainbows and Smiles Childhood Cancer Foundation was founded by an oncology mother, Bonita Suckling who lost her only son to brain cancer. Jed, the inspiration behind this local Durban foundation, passed away after a three-year struggle with an aggressive brain tumour, at the age of 6. This courageous little boy loved to hand out presents to his friends while they received treatment and that is how the charity started. They have since expanded their support into various other areas. The team members are all part of Bonita’s close friendship circle and have somehow been directly affected by childhood cancer. The volunteers devote their personal time to making the foundation a success. Nadia, a volunteer at Rainbows, said that working with children with cancer has assisted her in her grieving process and although she will never recover from the loss of her son, Hanno, she loves honouring his memory.

Accurate statistics for childhood cancer in South Africa have not been published, but there is data that suggests around 600 children are diagnosed with cancer yearly. It’s the belief of the Rainbows and Smiles foundation that many children die of cancer before they are diagnosed or begin treatment. This is why continuous education, advocacy and awareness are essential. The foundation’s mission is to offer emotional, social and financial support to families when a child is diagnosed with cancer. Rainbows and Smiles is a public benefit organisation; all donations made to Rainbows and Smiles qualify as Social Economic Development assistance and will benefit more than 75% black South African beneficiaries as defined by the BEE Codes of Good Practice. What is Homoeopathy?

Dr Richard Steele

World Homoeopathy Awareness Week is from 10 to 16 April. Dr Megan Medina sheds some light on what Homoeopathy is. Homoeopathy follows the ‘individualisation’ method of treatment, where it seeks to cure the person rather than the disease. Homoeopathy boosts your child’s immune system, making him stronger from the inside and more resistant to diseases on the outside. The strength of your child’s immunity is based on how well your child can fend off diseases and infections, homoeopathy works by boosting his immune system and ramps up his body’s defences against disease causing viruses and bacteria. Homoeopathy is wonderful for children and babies. It is safe, gentle yet very effective and is a good alternative to conventional medicine. Homoeopathy can treat acute illnesses like coughs, colds, fevers, ear ache, chicken pox and tonsillitis. It works quickly and effectively without any side effects. Homoeopathy works with the immune system to help the body heal itself.

“gentle health”

Benefits of Homoeopathy • It is safe: even in pregnancy and for tiny infants. • It is universal: available under the same names all over the world. • It boosts the immune system. • It treats the person in the body, both emotional and physical symptoms. • It works very fast (contrary to popular belief). • It treats the whole person, not separate symptoms. • It can be used with conventional medicine to boost the body’s healing mechanisms. • It strengthens general resistance to disease. • It is made from natural substances, promoting healing as nature intended. • It is easy and pleasant to take (even for babies and the elderly). • It helps prevent disease when taken as a prophylactic (preventative). • It is affordable.

First Aid for Bites and Stings South Africans often share their outdoor spaces with creatures that may be rather dangerous to humans. This is especially true of creatures of the creepy crawly variety, such as spiders, scorpions and snakes.

severe headaches and general or localised skin changes such as a rash or itching. • If you show signs of having a severe reaction to a bite or sting, you should get to a doctor or a hospital as soon as possible.

First Aid for Beestings • Use a knife, bankcard or your fingernail to gently scrape out the beesting before cleaning the area concerned. • Avoid squeezing the sting as this may inject further venom into your skin. • Take particular care if you are allergic to beestings, as they can cause an severe reaction known as anaphylactic shock, which can be potentially life threatening. If you know that you are allergic, wear a medical bracelet and carry an adrenalin injection and antihistamine pills at all times. • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing and swallowing, choking or wheezing, pain in the abdomen and/or chest, nausea and vomiting, feeling faint,

Treating Snake Bites • If you see a snake, it is important to back away slowly and avoid agitating the snake, as most snakes do not bite without being provoked. • South Africa has very effective antivenoms however many bites can be time sensitive. It is therefore vital to visit your nearest medical facility as soon as possible after you have been bitten. • Remain calm and avoid moving the body part that was bitten. • Avoid eating or drinking anything, especially alcohol, unless directed to do so by a medical professional.

Your Child’s Development: The Knee Did you know that the knee is the largest joint in the human body? That is why we are focusing on development associated with this very important joint. It is normal for children to walk with bow legs before they turn two and then to walk with knock knees until the age of approximately three or four. It all forms part of the miracle of the life that is your child. Something to keep in mind is that besides grazed knees, it is never normal for a preschooler to be complaining about pain in their knees. You should be seeking the advice of your GP or physiotherapist. The same applies if the one knee or leg looks obviously different to the other.

Is your Posture causing Headaches? “The most common health problem I see in practice is bad posture. It has many different causes, but I would say the most common cause is the amount of time people spend hunched over their desks and computers. This bad habit, if left untreated, can lead to permanent changes to the shape and alignment of your spine,” says chiropractor Dr David Palmer. A misaligned spine places extra strain and weight on the joints, discs, nerves and muscles. This accumulated muscle tension, coupled with the reduced circulation as a result of bad posture can lead to permanent degenerative changes of the spine and is linked to many health problems such as pain, low energy and headaches. A very common feature that Dr Palmer sees among patients who suffer with headaches is a forward head posture. This is often seen on x-rays as a straightening of the neck curve (loss of lordosis). By following a very specific corrective care programme, he can help return the shape of your spine to normal and correct the cause of your problems.

Teaming Up to Fight Against Skin Cancer The Cancer Association of South Africa, (CANSA) and the Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa (SCFSA) have teamed up to support the BE SUN SMART school programme, aimed at installing sunscreen dispensers at schools, in a fight against skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in South Africa, and skin cancer rates in South Africa are among the highest in the world. However, the skin cancer risk can be reduced. The most vital step to reducing skin cancer is to keep children protected from UV radiation while they’re outside, especially between 10am and 3pm, as well as encouraging use of sun smart habits from an early age.

BE SUN SMART was launched in KwaZuluNatal last year by two concerned Durban mothers, Hayleigh Bott and Donna Short, in partnership with NIVEA Sun. The BE SUN SMART objectives are threefold. Firstly, to make sunscreen instantly accessible when and where it is needed most at schools, secondly to make sun care part of children’s every day routine and thirdly, to educate children on sun safety. What better place for children to learn sun smart habits than within the learning environment of their own school? With 37 schools signed up, and roughly 4 000 pupils getting UV protection at school through this programme, BE SUN SMART is gaining momentum. For more information contact: BE SUN SMART, Hayleigh Bott: 082 419 2969, info@besunsmart. co.za, www.facebook.com/ BESUNSMART. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has two NIVEA Sun hampers to give away. The Importance of Regular Eye Exams Routine eye exams are important, regardless of your age or your physical health. During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor does much more than just determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses – he/she will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

Occupational Therapists

Eye examinations are an important part of health maintenance for everyone. Depending on your age or underlying medical condition, everyone should have their eyes examined on an annual or biannual basis.

We can assist with the following • Learning Difficulties • Developmental Delay • ADHD • Neurological Conditions • Psychiatric Conditions

Children’s eye exams are important to ensure normal vision development. They play an important role in ensuring normal vision development and academic achievement. Vision is closely linked to the learning process. Children with undetected vision problems often will have trouble with their schoolwork. Many times, children will not complain of vision problems simply because they don’t know what ‘normal’ vision looks like. If your child is performing poorly at school, be sure to have his/her eyes examined by an optometrist (children older than 6 years) or ophthalmologist (children younger than 6 years). In addition to evaluating your eyes for glasses and contacts, your eye doctor will check your eyes for eye diseases and other problems that could lead to vision loss and discuss appropriate treatment plans.

Fungal Infections of the Skin Fungal skin infections are infections on your skin caused by a fungus. There are many different types of fungal skin infections. Dermatophyte Infections: Most basic fungal skin infections are caused by dermatophytes, a type of fungi that cause skin, nail and hair infections. They are common, affecting between 10 and 20% of people at some point in their life. They include athlete’s foot, nail infections and ringworm. Yeast infections: Other fungal skin infections are caused by yeast infections. For example, Intertrigo and Pityriasis Versicolor.

in the form of creams, lotions and medicated powders. If the rash covers quite a large area of skin, or affects the nails or scalp, then tablets may be required. Prevention • Dry your skin carefully after bathing. • Wear loose fitting clothes and underwear. • Avoid sharing towels, hair brushes and combs. • Change socks or tights daily. • For athlete’s foot, alternate shoes every two or three days so that they have time to dry out. • Choose fabrics that allow the skin to breathe. • If you have Diabetes you need to keep good control of your blood sugar. Contact: Dr Imraan Jhetam, Specialist Dermatologist, 031 – 208 3370, info@skindoctor.co.za, www.skinmedics.co.za.

Causes You’re more at risk from fungal infections if you have recently taken a course of antibiotics, have been taking oral steroids, have Diabetes or if you are obese. Moist skin encourages fungal infections. This means fungal infections are more likely when skin isn’t dried properly after sweating or bathing, or when it is covered with a material that doesn’t allow sweat to evaporate. Blossom Handmade Designer, Shauna Neill, started Blossom Handmade five years ago as a small business, designing and making everything herself, and selling the range of jewellery and accessories at markets and open days. She now employs six staff, and the range is available around the world. Each item is handcrafted in the Durban studio by previously unemployed women, using locally produced materials and the very popular t-shirt necklaces are now made by hand at the newly built clothing factory at LIV Village, thereby providing full-time employment to three local ladies. The range is divided into two brands: • Blossom Handmade which comprises accessories made from fabrics, crochet, wood, and semi-precious stones. • Ring Ring Bling which is a range made from telephone wire – a traditional South African material made fashionable through the use of on-trend colours and forms. The most exciting recent development is the introduction of online selling via the Blossom Handmade website www. blossomhandmade.co.za and Facebook page. You can now shop for your favourite Blossom Handmade items from the comfort of your couch, and they will be delivered to you free of charge (within SA). Reflexology for Your Feet Did you know that the bottom of your feet could affect what’s going on in other areas of your body? On each foot there are over 7 000 nerve endings called reflexes that correspond to every organ and system within your body. By pressing on these reflex points, you stimulate the nervous system and open energy pathways that may be blocked or congested. Research has shown that reflexology has four primary effects: • It can impact specific organs, e.g. increase blood flow to the kidneys. • It can bring about an amelioration of specific symptoms by helping organs function properly. • It can create a relaxation effect and reduce anxiety. • It can relieve pain throughout the body. So if you are struggling, do a Google search to find the pictures of the different reflex points on your feet, buy a Sh’Zen Oil to suit your needs and do a DIY foot massage. Claudette Whitehead, Sh’Zen team leader, recommends the Foot Massage Oil for Feet for R209. It contains Melissa, which is the elixir of life. “Your hands, your feet, your face, your body, my passion.”

Beauty Tips from Make-up MOB A light and a natural use of colour over the Summer months works best to combat the blazing Summer sun. Keep your layers of make-up thin, letting the skin breathe easily, and allow your lipstick to give your style that vivacious pop it needs to set you apart. Tone down your blush powders and creams and instead look to create a healthy bronzed beach feel. Make sure to express yourself through a vibrant, bright lipstick that works to highlight your smile. If the heat begins to wear on you, pick up a facial hydrating spray that prevents your skin from drying out and will add to the dewy, natural look that experts are turning to this year.

light to accentuate chosen facial features. Contouring works best with matt colours that complement your complexion and skin tone and a careful use of brush strokes to blend the contour tone naturally into your skin. As Autumn approaches, we are likely to see a move away from bright colours, especially with lipstick, towards deep and warm tones. Philips AVENT Celebrates 30 Years in South Africa

Baby Bygones

A picture speaks a thousand words, but it can also cement a lifetime of beautiful memories. Having shared three decades of memoirs between mom and baby, Philips AVENT is celebrating its 30-year milestone with the launch of its country-wide Baby of the Year competition.

• We sell secondhand baby items • We offer a baby equipment cleaning service • We hire out baby equipment for visitors 031 - 701 0243 • 082 455 6068 2 Paige Place, Bamboo Lane, Pinetown

“We would now like to share our big day by inviting parents to nominate their babies in our Philips AVENT Baby of the Year competition with prizes that are not only going to help mom now, but more importantly, for her child’s future,” said Lucy Jones, Marketing Head, Consumer Lifestyle, Africa. The competition will be filled with spot prizes and giveaways until the winner is announced in mid-April 2015. The lucky baby and their parents will be awarded with an education trust in partnership with Liberty Investments, as well as a photo shoot to ensure parents have a memoir of their beautiful bundle of joy’s accolade. The second and third prize winners will also be receiving a photo shoot each, while the first 250 entrants will walk away with a mom and baby t-shirt. If you have missed the store activations where moms and babies can have their pictures taken to enter the competition through the on-site application station, you can still enter online – for more information visit the Facebook page: Philips AVENT South Africa. Toys Suitable for Your Baby: 8 to 12 Months Your baby is probably sitting by now and can enjoy toys that he can manipulate. He will explore them, putting them in and out of containers and start looking for them when they are hidden. He will start to imitate sounds and be more mobile, crawling and cruising around the furniture. Provide books (cardboard, vinyl or cloth), again looking for books with texture and things for him to practice his index isolation, which he will use to feel the soft lamb’s wool in a texture book. Movable toys with strings like cars, buses and animals are wonderful at this stage. Provide him with balls of all different sizes, some soft, others hard and some with spikes on. Engage in two-way play. Large blocks are also a win as they will knock the tower down that mom has just built, teaching them cause and effect. Look for simple knob puzzles. He might not place them back yet, but he will be able to take them out and that in itself is a great fine motor skill. To encourage pincer grip give him half a cup of frozen peas to play with. He will pick them up one by one, which is excellent for fine motor co-ordination and teaching him to eat by himself. You are not able to hide things from them at this stage, as they will go and look for it. Use cardboard paper towel tubes to post items through; he will be a little puzzled as to where it went and be surprised as it comes out the other end. By Liz Victor. Babatjie Chewels: Chewable Jewellery

DO YOU WANT TO BE FAMOUS FOR FREE?

Babatjie Chewels are a range of fun and funky jewellery for moms to wear and babies to chew on. The Babatjie Chewels range was started up in Durban by ‘momtrepreneur’ Kelly van Schaik.

Calling all schools! Do you have an event you want to share with us? Information on your school? Or perhaps a star pupil you want us to know about? Send your stories and photos to editor@mumsmail.com and it may get published on our website blog for free!

“When my son started teething, everything would go into his mouth, including any jewellery I tried to wear. While talking to other mothers I found this was a common problem and set out to find the solution. The silicone teething jewellery was just the solution I was looking for,” said Kelly. They offer readily available comforting to your little one while looking good on you and are available in a wide range of colours to go with any outfit.

Santie 079 887 8322 sales@pottz.co.za www.pottz.co.za

The silicone beads are soft but firm, giving your little one teething relief without hurting their little gums. The necklaces are a great sensory tool for babies to hold and keep focused on whilst nursing. The bracelets can also work as a nursing reminder as to which side to feed next. Babatjie teething ‘chewellery’ is made of 100% food grade silicone, similar to pacifiers. They contain no PVC, phthalates, BPA, lead, cadmium or metals. The necklaces have a breakaway clasp designed to handle tugs and pulls from your little ‘babatjie’. The aim is to make the teething phase more comfortable for your little one with pieces that are fashionable for moms and functional for babies. For more information, visit: www.babatjie.weebly.com, www.facebook.com/babatjiechewls or email babatjieproducts@gmail.com. Naturally Baby is an online baby store that sells both imported and local products. Owner Denise Knott is very health conscious and has done her best to adapt the same principles to her business. Denise tries to be environmentally conscious and consider the impact products have on our surroundings. “When I became a mother, the realisation of the impact of the products we use has on our earth scared me. I consider my son’s future and all those to follow. I have made changes in my life to do my bit in saving the earth. I use reusable cloth nappies, I used Lilypadz while I breastfed and I use environmentally friendly products on my son,” she explained.

• Private & Group Coaching • Beginners, Intermediate & Advanced • Pre-school Programme 4 - 5 Year Olds Durban North 083 253 7714 031 - 563 3208

Their core product is Lilypadz, reusable breast pads. They are imported from America and are made of 100% medical grade silicone and are self-adhesive. Apart from decreasing disposable waste, Lilypadz really make the journey of breastfeeding a more enjoyable one. No more itchy, disposable breast pads, no more running out and having to buy more and, the best part, no need for a bra! Another product is the Hipster; a Swedishdesigned baby carrier that is not only good for your back, but healthy for your baby. The hipster was designed to support your back with its waist strap. It is also a seat for baby. This places the baby’s hips in a healthy sitting position, rather than a hanging crotch sling. It can also be worn nine different ways.

Naturally Baby is an online store dedicated to selling both mum and baby gear. We import quality products from overseas as well as offering a wide range of carefully selected local products. We strive in finding the best products focusing on the health and well being of both mother and child.

KiddoRead Reading Programme

• Would you like to get your three-year-old to read YOU bedtime stories? • Would you like a child struggling with reading to catch up quickly? • Would you like a child reading at an average level to excel? • Do you only have 15 minutes a day to spare?

With KiddoRead, a professional and revolutionary reading programme for children, all this could happen in the comfort of your home! Studies indicate that children starting school with a strong base of reading abilities are far more likely to excel in all academic learning areas, whereas children who have not built these vital skills will often have a problematic time learning new skills and could fall far behind their contemporaries. This programme helps build vocabulary, the ability to decipher complex words and enhanced accuracy, speed and understanding of information! Most studying requires reading and understanding and with efficient reading ALL learning areas can be improved.

KiddoRead is perfect for children from three years onwards. It is a reading programme that teaches them to read by focusing on decoding and deciphering, rather than ‘parroting’ off words. It requires approximately 15 minutes a day of input from the parent. The KiddoRead material pack consists of a print version of the KiddoRead manual, as well as an electronic one, which gives you the flexibility to go through it in either format. The electronic version has embedded audio-clips throughout the exercises which help the parent and the child in the pronunciation of the various letters. The Purpose Driven Girl Fashion Show Purpose Driven Organization (PDO) is a woman’s organisation that is based in the community of Kwa-Mashu in Durban. The organisation has been in operation since 2004. Their vision is to empower, develop, educate, entertain and inspire women of all ages. In fulfilling this vision they have hosted a number of successful events, one of which was the first ever Purpose Driven Girl Fashion Show for young girls between the ages of four and 12 years, which was a great success. The Purpose Driven Girl Fashion Show’s aim is to instil confidence and a sense of pride and worthiness in girls from a tender age of four years. Not only that, but it also creates a platform for many girls who could potentially start modelling careers. The fashion show not only showcases the girls’ fashion designer clothing, but also has a recycled festival where the Purpose Driven Ladies make clothing out of recycled items and this year the theme is Candy Land.

Pompom Pets Creating your own little critters that can dangle and dance is a fun activity with many interesting options.

Pompoms teach children: • Winding • Threading • Cutting • Creating with waste Before the finished pompom is ready to be cut from the card, thread some pipecleaners through the centre hole. Choose the number of pipe-cleaners for the type of critter you imagine. Insect, monster or alien are all good options. Use one pipe-cleaner to thread or glue ‘googlie eyes’ on for your pet. Bend the other end to make a hanging loop. When the wool has been cut, the pipecleaners, acting as different appendages, are ready to be bent into shape.

All you need to know is how to make a pompom. A simple cardboard circle with a hole in the middle is the basis of this useful craft. The card template looks like a donut. The size of the donut and its hole will determine the size of the pompom. Made with wool, they are a great way to use up mom’s balls of old wool. Thread the wool through the ‘donut’ hole over and over For more information visit the again, so that it is wound all the way around Wart and Fish Facebook page: the cardboard circle. Stand Firmly Against Underage Drinking

THE HEALTHY SNACK BOX

A delicious mix of mainly healthy snacks for your child’s lunchbox! Can be customised. • Small (20 packs) R100 • Med (40 packs) R190 • Large (60 packs) R280

The South African Breweries (SAB) 18+ campaign is a call to action for adults to be role models in the fight against underage drinking, which SAB believes it has a responsibility to lead. SAB will use the 18+ campaign to drive education amongst adults on the topic of underage drinking and its dangers and consequences. It seeks to encourage adults to take another look at some of their beliefs and practices. International research on youth binge drinking has shown that the behaviour and influence of parents can have a significant impact on underage drinking, and the importance of educating parents. Key messaging highlighted in the campaign includes that it is not okay to give teenagers a drink in order to ‘control’ their consumption habits nor is it okay for a child under the age of 18 to be sent to buy alcohol for an adult. Parents and other adults should also not be taking children with them to a pub or tavern and it is not okay to do nothing when teenagers are seen drinking. SAB encourages parents to have open and honest conversations about alcohol with their children. The key message as part of the 18+ campaign is that parents must speak to our youth about alcohol before alcohol speaks to them. I spent a blissful day with my 15 year old daughter being pampered at Mangwanani Spa at Sibaya, and it was great to do something we both love together. During the course of the day, I took advantage of the time we spent, while bonding, to chat to her about the dangers of underage drinking. Visit www.sabstories.co.za for more information. Salt Water Paintings This fun activity can be an interesting and educational experiment for a party, or you could just do it at home when you’re feeling crafty! What you will Need: • Water • Salt • Food colouring • Paper • Paint brushes • Containers

• Nail Art • Manis • Pedis • Make–Up • Mini Facials Only R100pp. Travel fee will apply

What to Do: • Mix one quarter cup of warm water with six teaspoons of salt and three drops of food colouring in a small container. You could make a few cups with different colours in each. • Paint pictures with the mixture on white paper using a paint brush. • Let the paper dry. After the water evaporates, the coloured salt creates a textured effect. So What? The children will recognise liquids that evaporate and learn the process of evaporation. The water cycle goes along with the elements of weather. How the sun warms the water in the oceans and lakes and the water evaporates into the air. The water vapour in the air condenses into clouds. The clouds become heavy with water and the rain falls back into the ocean and lakes. Relate the weather cycle to the evaporation of the water on their paintings. Give examples of what substances evaporate and what substances do not. Source: KZN Science Centre, 031 – 830 5379, www.kznsc.org, www.facebook.com/KZNScienCentre.

The purpose of the open day is to raise awareness about mangrove forest ecosystems, and the work that voluntary officers do. The Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve is the southern-most point of Africa, where three species of Mangroves can be found in one place. Mangrove forests can affect climate change, act as hatcheries and nurseries for marine life and are the habitat of many plants and animals – some of these are even endangered. This is a rare opportunity to view the behind-the-scenes activities at Beachwood Mangroves – from marine protection, projects, research, education and awareness to terrestrial activities and biodiversity. It will be a fun-filled and informative day for the whole family. Other nature and conservation orientated groups will be attending and there will be interactive and static displays showcasing their conservation efforts, including bird life, reptiles, and many more. Some of the attractions on the day include: • Displays and stalls by various animal and conservation groups • Children’s activities • Items for sale • Various food stalls • Assisted walks • Raffles and competitions • Interactive demonstrations. Entrance is free, and parking is available. For more information contact 084 610 0012.

Easter Fun

Easter Recipes to do with your kids

Here’s a fun idea for Easter morning!

Move over chocolate eggs! These delightful little Easter chick marshmallow pops will be a hit with the kids, and they’re simple and budget-friendly to make.

Serving Size: Serves 4 Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 10 mins

Serving Size: Makes 20 Prep Time: 20 mins

Ingredients: 1 cup (150g) self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 egg 1 cup (250ml) milk 30g butter 1 banana 24 choc chips 32 white mini marshmallows

Ingredients: 150g white chocolate 100g white marshmallows 10 yellow M&M’s 1-2 red licorice twists Black icing pen

Method: • In a large bowl, combine flour and baking powder. Add egg and milk and whisk until well combined. • Melt butter in a large non-stick frypan over medium heat. Use a spoon to create pancake shapes. You will need one large circle for the body, a smaller circle for the head, two small circles for the feet and two triangles for the ears. Cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip and cook for a further 1-2 minutes. Remove to a plate and keep warm. • Peel banana and slice into 8 pieces. Top small pancake circles with a slice of banana and three choc chips to create feet. • Arrange pancakes on plate. Start with the ears. Top with the head piece, slightly overlapping, then the body piece. Finally, carefully place the decorated feet overlapping the bottom of the body. Arrange mini marshmallows to create the fluffy tail.

95

You will also need: 20 pop sticks or skewers Method: • Melt white chocolate in a bowl placed over a saucepan of simmering water. Alternatively, melt in short bursts in the microwave. • Push marshmallows onto the pop sticks. One by one, dip into the melted chocolate, allowing excess to drip off. • Cut M&M’s in half with a sharp knife. Cut 4mm slices of licorice and then cut those across into half moons. Working quickly before the chocolate has completely set, press a half M&M into the front of the marshmallow and a licorice piece onto the top. Refrigerate to set completely. • Once set, using icing pen, squeeze a small amount onto each marshmallow to form the eyes. Source: www.kidspot.co.au
