Editor’s Life I would like to dedicate this Women’s month issue to a very special lady, Liz Victor, the founder and owner of the TopTots franchise who has been an advertiser since the very first issue of Mum’s Mail. Liz has been fighting cancer and sadly passed away on 14 July at the young age of 48. The following extract is from a eulogy by Melodie de Jager that was read out at her memorial service: “Liz burst into my life with a beaming smile, tons of energy, ideas, passion, positivity, enthusiasm. She had the same effect on me as a fireworks display on a clear summer evening. Liz was larger than life...mmm, I’m sure I can hear her reply: but I AM larger than most! And THAT is my Lizzy...a woman with an unquenchable spirit and a sense of humour. A humour that was cultivated in her ouerhuis where jokes and pranks filled their home and shaped her life to be the dynamo that she was...no, still is, because what Liz did on this earth will echo in eternity. And in the lives of Charl and Jean-Marie and the lives of thousands of other children across the globe. Liz’s impact will not only echo in children, but also in the lives of everyone who has ever had the privilege of experiencing Liz. No one just met Liz, one experienced Liz. And like we want a majestic fireworks display to go on, we wanted Liz to go on, but it doesn’t and she didn’t. And now we are left feeling dazed and robbed. Liz leaves an unforgettable and colourful impression as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a friend, a colleague, a business woman, an author, a speaker, a TV personality, the queen of branding and a shaper of lives.” I hope that one day when I’m gone, someone will deliver a eulogy for me that is half as impressive as this one - Liz we will miss you! Gone but not forgotten.

Alice xxx

P.S. It’s thanks to loyal advertisers like Liz that I am celebrating 10 years this August as the owner and editor of Mum’s Mail. www.mumsmail.com

Stars of the Ballet Russia in Durban Steeped in the finest ballet traditions, Pearls of the Russian choreography comes to Durban for two shows only at the Playhouse Theatre on August 6 and 7 – an enchanting programme of classical ballet compiled by former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, Yury Vetrov. Presented by The Stars of the Ballet Russia Company, the first half of the programme features Acts 2 and 4 of Swan Lake. The second half includes the romantic pas de deux from the timeless Sleeping Beauty and the magnificent Grand Pas Classique from the popular Paquita, widely considered one of the finest achievements of choreographer Marius Petipa. This richly textured programme of fantasy and fairy stories, gypsies, swans and sorcerers will delight both old and new audiences of ballet. Danced to the sublime music of Tchaikovsky (Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty) and the legendary ballet composer Minkus (Paquita), the creative direction of Pearls of the Russian Choreography is in the hands of Yury Vetrov and Maria Bylova. The featured female soloists are Maria Sokolnikova and Maria Klueva from the Russian National Ballet. The impressive German Zhukovsckiy, a 2012 soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre and a recent member of the Kremlin Ballet, will partner them. Mikhailov Mikhail, an award winning lead dancer, also from the Kremlin Ballet, will join them.

Make Sure You Have Adequate Household Contents Cover We recently processed a burglary claim on behalf of a client. His tools from the storeroom were stolen and he submitted a claim, estimating the cost of replacing the items to be R31 000.

We specialise in short-term insurance for both your Domestic anD commercial neeDs

Contact Cheryl King 031 314 3415 or 082 894 0756

An assessor was appointed and after obtaining formal quotes, the cost of the claim increased to just over R45 000. The insurance company happily settled this claim in full. Of course the client was delighted with the outcome.

One of the reasons this claim was settled in full is that the home contents amount insured was sufficient to cover the full replacement cost of his entire home. It is imperative that you ensure your home contents amount insured is sufficient to cover the replacement value of all your items. The replacement value is the cost of replacing the item now, not the value that the item was originally bought for.

Important points to remember: • Update your household contents amount insured at least every year and when you purchase anything of substantial value. • Remember portable possessions are not insured outside of your home. • At claims stage, valuation certificates and proof of ownership for jewellery, pieces of art or other items that are rare, unique or that are collectibles will be required. If they are not available, cover will be limited.

Put your best face forward with a fresher, smooth, rejuvenated complexion. Let light-based therapy with a Lumenis Laser or IPL treatment do the work for you!

Tip of the month Have available current valuation certificates for your jewellery. This will be required in event of a claim.

The GMO Choice: What I Choose To Feed My Children Parents are faced each day with choices about every aspect of their children’s upbringing and one of the most important is what they eat. It is not always easy to stick to your principles and remain conscious of how some foods are produced when you and your children are surrounded by an abundance of colourful offerings (that are often unhealthy, unethical and are usually designed to specifically attract children). Something that is really getting my attention at the moment is the ongoing debate around genetically modified foods.

it fear potential health risks, such as increased allergies or that it may lead to the development of new diseases. I have been a vegetarian my whole life and as a mother I choose to give my children foods that are free from animal products. As a family of vegetarians in a family-run business, we are intricately involved in the product development at Fry’s Foods. We’ve made our business choices both from an ethical and a health stand point, and so it was a natural decision to ensure that all the ingredients in our products were GMO free.

Nuptial Financial Toxins One of the bedrocks of marital bliss is financial security. Marriage is, amongst other things, a financial transaction. It begins with the ante-nuptial contract. This sets the tone for future financial dealings between the partners. It should set a positive tone and emphasise that marriage is based on sharing. An antenuptial contract can, however, contain the seed of destruction of the marriage; such a seed is the exclusion of the accrual system. The accrual system is flawed in many respects, but it is better than the alternative. It provides for sharing of financial and proprietary resources when the marriage ends. All marriages do end – in death, or divorce. Many accomplished professionals or businessmen have money before they marry, especially where the marriage is a second one. Some of them exclude the accrual system completely. Others exclude so many assets, that there will, effectively, be nothing for the wife. This sends a message that she may not be appreciated. Like a tumour, the belief that she will have no claim when the marriage ends, may grow; no matter how faithful and devoted a wife and mother she is, she may sense that she will not be getting her fair share.

Of course, there are remedies: the husband’s will may direct the executor to transfer all assets to his widow. Wills however, can be changed. A better solution is to share assets during the marriage, so the wife has no reason to feel undervalued. Either way, steps must be taken. Neither spouse must have reason to feel unappreciated. Rescue Care Private Ambulance Service After working for one of South Africa’s largest private ambulance services for over a decade, Advanced Life Support paramedic, Garrith Jamieson and his wife Jodi-Anne, opened their own private ambulance service, Rescue Care. When they started in August 2012, they owned two ambulances; one dedicated to operations and one dedicated to events, and employed eight staff. They ran one ambulance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with Garrith working almost seven days a week, twelve hours a day, manning the dayshift ambulance with a basic life support paramedic, while Jodi-Anne ran the administration of the business with the help of an admin clerk. During 2013 Rescue Care employed more staff and purchased more vehicles as the demand for ambulances to transport patients increased, as well as the demand for medical staff at events. Towards the end of 2013 they opened a first aid training college and they are in the process of becoming HWSETA registered. Today they own six ambulances, three response vehicles and employ around twenty staff. They run three ambulances that service the Durban central, south Durban, north Durban and outer West areas. They are registered with all medical aids and the Road Accident Fund and Workmen’s Compensation Fund. The medical events division offers medical staff to eight different schools and rugby clubs. Recue Care supplies medical staff to larger events such as concerts, triathlons, marathons and corporate events. They are the sole provider of medical staff to the SA Polo Association in KZN and were appointed medical supplier for Top Gear Festival 2014 in Durban. Ocean Basket’s Menu: A Work Of Art With their revamped menu and valueadded dishes, Ocean Basket remains the number one seafood restaurant choice. Ocean Basket’s new menu celebrates everything South Africa’s favourite chain of seafood restaurants are built on – a variety of delicious food, ethically sourced, freshly prepared and as generous in their portions as they are warm in their welcoming. Hot and cold dishes, like the Seared Salmon Salad and the Prawn Special and Stirfry Veg, share the limelight. The Platter for Two and Family Platter encourages patrons to tuck in and enjoy their culinary experience among the warmth of family and friends, without worrying about a break-the-bank bill at the end of the meal. Customer favourites are also offered as combos, so patrons can have the best of both worlds. While surfing the mains, one can read about Ocean Basket’s commitment to sustainable fishing.

Food Works With Kurt: Dressings

TAFTA MEALS ON WHEELS

Noel Goldman turned 80 on 3 June this year. When most people would have been retired for 15 years, he is growing his homemade business in leaps and bounds! In 2003 he bought the recipe for a homemade salad dressing from Kurt, a former chef, who was immigrating. Setting himself up in his kitchen, he launched into his new venture of producing a good quality, preservative free, diabetic friendly range of dressings. He launched his brand, Food Worx By Kurt, in the Ballito area by trading at the local farmers’ market. The product was well supported in the area and he continues to have a solid client base on the North Coast. He then ventured into Durban, becoming a popular trader at the Stables Market. Shortly thereafter, he was approached by Everfresh to supply their retail outlets with his selection of dressings, which he still continues to do. Noel is a regular trader at The Food Market and they are extremely proud to have him on board. He is what The Food Market is all about – showcasing quality local product and passionate producers. His original recipe has remained his sole property, which he continues to produce himself at home and trade at the Market. He has the heart of a true market trader and local food hero! Contact: Noel, 073 392 1307, www.facebook.com/foodworkswithkurt, The Food Market: 031 – 563 8546, eatgreek@telkomsa.net, www.eatgreek.co.za. Flop Proof Beer Box Cake This recipe is tried and tested and it has never ever flopped on me, even when I have accidentally used the wrong sugar, not enough eggs, you name it, it still works! The best part is that it is baked in a beer box lined with tin foil so there is no washing up of the baking tin and transport to your child’s school for the birthday ring or Baker Baker Day is a breeze. Ingredients: Some recipes don’t enjoy being doubled or halved, this one is not fussy, it can be halved, doubled or trebled with great success. • 500ml water • 150ml oil • 90ml (6 tablespoons) cocoa for chocolate cake – if you prefer vanilla, leave the cocoa out and add an extra 90ml flour when you add the flour • 10ml (2 teaspoons) vanilla essence • 8 extra-large eggs • 875ml flour • 30ml (6 teaspoons) baking powder • 750ml castor sugar

www.mumsmail.com

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180˚C 2. Line a beer tray with foil, shiny side out 3. Bring water, oil, cocoa and vanilla essence to boil, leave to cool 4. Beat eggs and castor sugar until thick and creamy 5. Add sifted flour and baking powder, folding in gently 6. Carefully add chocolate mixture and fold in with a metal spoon, being careful not to overmix 7. Pour into your lined beer tray and bake for 30-35 minutes at 180˚C 8. Allow to cool and decorate with your favourite icing Recipe supplied by Kerry Taravez of Foodeez. Contact: Craig, 083 225 2385, orders@foodeez.co.za, craig@foodeez.co.za. James’ Roses Many people will recognise James Easton of Glen Anil; he is the youngest, most passionate ‘rose man’ in the area. Our verge has hundreds of roses on it, not to mention the hundreds more inside our garden. James has taken his passion for roses to the next level and started a business maintaining, pruning, spraying and tending to roses to ensure that you also enjoy having cabbage-sized roses blooming all year round in your garden. Having overcome alcohol and drug addiction, he has been clean for three years now and is an excellent example to his peers of how you can turn your passion into a business and succeed at doing what you love. James won a makeover for our garden through The Gardener magazine and Builders Express and he has also received a certificate of acknowledgement from the mayor for his beautiful rose garden verge. Call now to book your winter rose pruning, as now is the right time to prune. James will do all the work for you personally, ensuring that your rose garden has his personal green-finger touch to it. Ask for a quote to maintain your roses for you weekly. James’ Roses – for all your rose maintenance, planting and landscaping requirements. What is Cystic Fibrosis? Support the Cystic Fibrosis Genes Day is on 6 August; wear jeans and donate R10 to raise funds and help raise awareness about Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Does your child constantly cough, have significantly salty skin or struggle to gain weight? They may be suffering from CF – a genetic disease that is not well known but results in many premature deaths. Symptoms are easily confused with asthma, stomach problems, malnutrition and even TB, so it pays to be aware of this disorder. It is one of the most common inherited disorders, but it can affect a family with no previous history of CF. Early diagnosis is critical and can improve the quality of life and survival age significantly. Currently there is no cure for CF. Funds are needed to promote early diagnosis and provide proper treatment. CF is an inherited genetic disease that affects a number of organs in the body, primarily the lungs and pancreas, by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus. Repeated infections and blockages can cause irreversible lung damage and death. Mucus blocks the tiny ducts of the pancreas which supply enzymes required for digestion, so food is not properly digested. The sweat glands are also affected and the body may lose an excessive amount of salt during exercise or hot weather. In early childhood, prominent symptoms include growth problems or frequent infections, especially of the lungs. As the disease progresses, frequent lung infections (pneumonia) often lead to problems breathing, lung damage, prolonged courses of antibiotics, and respiratory failure requiring support by a ventilator. What is Psoriasis?

SPECIALIST DERMATOLOGIST Dr Mohamed F. Sacoor August is World Psoriasis Awareness Month. Psoriasis is a MbChB (Natal). F.C Dermatology (SA)

chronic inflammatory condition of the skin that affects 2-3% of the population worldwide. It is characterised by scaly patches on the scalp, elbows and knees. It may also extend to involve any area on the body. Cause: The cause of psoriasis is unknown. Psoriasis tends to be aggravated by poor lifestyle habits such as excessive smoking and alcohol consumption. Clinical features: Patients present with thick scaly patches that tend to occur anywhere on the body. The scales may extend onto the scalp and even beyond the hairline. The nails and joints may be affected. If left untreated, it may progress to affect the entire body and can even lead to a debilitating arthritis. Treatment: Treatments include topical, ultraviolet light and systemic (oral) treatments. The topical treatments are topical steroids, vitamin D analogues, tar preparations and various exfoliating agents. These are reserved for localised areas of psoriasis. Ultraviolet therapy in the form of narrowband UVB is a novel, non-invasive treatment with limited side-effects. It is ideal for patients with more extensive psoriasis, who are not keen on oral medication. The systemic treatments include various agents that may suppress the immune system. These include medications such as Methotrexate, oral retinoids and cyclosporine. What’s new? The newer therapies include medications that are administered subcutaneously, intravenously or intramuscularly. They are able to modulate the immune system with a limited side effect profile. These medications are able to arrest the progress of the condition. For more information contact Dr Mohamed F. treated first, could result in surface veins returning.

Let’s face it ladies, surface veins such as spider, thread and varicose veins are not the most attractive feature to have! Luckily, with Sclerotherapy, which involves an injection of a special chemical (sclerosant) into a vein, these can now be treated with very favourable results. I visited Dr Johan Blignaut to test this treatment for myself. A specialist general surgeon previously based at Entabeni hospital, Dr Blignaut has been at the Vein Centre at Medigate Centre 2 since January 2014 and offers Sclerotherapy, radio-frequency ablation of veins as well as specialist venous ulcer management. Dr Blignaut is the only surgeon in Durban who performs an ultrasound (Doppler) scan as standard on every patient before treatment. This will determine the best course of action and reveal any underlying problems with deeper veins, which, if not

A few of my spider veins were injected with a very thin needle and much to my relief, I hardly felt a thing! My treatment was quick and painless and after a few weeks of rubbing with Arnica oil, my veins were much less visible and after four months they were well and truly gone. I can recommend this treatment for excellent, permanent results. Treatment for larger veins such as varicose veins are also carried out in the practice and is covered by most medical schemes in South Africa. Dr Blignaut cautions that anyone looking to have this treatment should always see a specialist surgeon for safety and best results.

Fish and Dip Fishing is a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors and learn some character building lessons. Patience is the quality that comes to mind. Wart and Fish have included the art of fishing in their ‘Food for Fun’ line up. It’s a magnetic fishing game and can be played at the Kids Café, Hellenic Market, and other Wart and Fish events. This simple game has children of all ages, even dads, enjoying dropping a cork, baited with a magnet, over a bowl of paper fish. The fish are hooked through the nose with a paper clip. When they are caught, they are saved in a bucket. A catch of ten fish wins a lucky dip prize.

A teen girl life coach is passionate about empowering teen girls through coaching: • Stress reduction • Peer relationship challenges • Improving communication with parents • Goal setting • Self-esteem building & assertiveness training • Future direction and more

031 327 4610/079 495 5536 abigail@abigailnepaul.com www.abigailnepaul.com

The principle of ‘catch and release’ is put into place as the noble fishermen return the fish to the pond before winning a prize. The game gives endless hours of fun and learning opportunities. • Eye-hand co-ordination • Counting and learning numbers • Number the fish and help with simple addition • Use the numbered fish to teach bonds in a fun way • Organise team games and keep score to see which team has the winning catch Make your own: Draw some fish and sea creatures. Use a dowel stick for the rod. Tie some string to a cork with a magnet glued onto the bottom. A plastic basin makes a great pond. Then away you go… just be prepared with lots of prizes for the lucky dips!

A Tale of Fun and Adventure

Ronny-G’s Travels by Gina WolfendenMcDowell (Published by Logogog).

• Classes 1 hr per week • Ages 4 - 12 years • All requirements supplied

Ronny-G’s Travels is a sweet story by a South African born author, where fact and fiction intertwine. Ronny-G is a blue doll with red hair, who is made in Thailand and bought by a young girl, G. This tale is told from the perspective of Ronny-G and aimed at a target audience of 8 to 10-year-olds. G’s father is an aeroplane pilot and her mother is a teacher who is responsible for G’s education. This allows them to travel the world as a family where Ronny-G and G experience all sorts of exciting adventures, from Ronny-G’s heartstopping climbs up the Eiffel Tower in France to rubbing shoulders with wax dolls at Madame Tussauds in England. Most information is geographically and historically correct, making this story not only entertaining, but also educational. A map is illustrated at the beginning and end of the book allowing readers to track Ronny-G as he travels to various countries, starting from Thailand and moving through the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Switzerland and ending in South Africa, G’s home. Line drawings complement the main event of each chapter. Ronny-G’s Travels books are available at bookshops in South Africa, and also abroad in Thailand and Nepal. Anxiety Disorders in Children Many children experience anxiety in one form or another as they are growing, for example stranger anxiety, which can start at around seven to nine months of age, or fear of storms. These anxieties are occasional and passing. It takes more than a passing anxiety to indicate symptoms of anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders (there are a few) are common in children and sometimes the children’s behaviour is misinterpreted as being defiant and naughty. How do I know if my child is battling with an anxiety disorder? Children with anxiety disorders have symptoms on most days, including: • Restlessness • Fatigue • Trouble concentrating • Irritability • Muscle tension • Headaches • Trouble sleeping When anxiety becomes a problem, it affects not only behaviour, but the emotions as well as the physical body. Also key to it being a disorder are symptoms that: • Last a long time and are severe. • Are out of proportion to the situation at hand. • Cause extreme behaviours such as avoidance of certain situations. Anxiety and depression also go hand in hand, but help is available for these children and their families. How can we help? If anxiety is interfering with everyday life, and the enjoyment thereof, it’s time to get help. Support can be by means of therapy such as cognitive-behavioural therapy and sometimes in conjunction with medication. The earlier it is given, the better for the child and most cases are treated with good results. This is good news for the children who are having trouble with anxiety and can equip and empower them for life! Visual Stimulation and the Infant

“The gentle approach to baby swimming“ “Opening the door of water fun and swimming excellence to everyone“

The development of the senses takes place within the womb. The last sense to develop fully is sight. It is only at around six months that it develops fully. Newborn babies see the world as slightly washed out and somewhat paler than we do. For this reason, strong contrasting colours are preferred.

• Baby Classes • Beginner Classes • Adult Classes • Stroke Technique GALA PREPARATIONS FOR 2013 • Stroke Correction

Infants are thought to be short sighted and can only focus on objects that are 20 to 30cm away from the face. Is it not wonderful that this is approximately the distance to your face when you are holding your baby? It is also the distance from the outstretched hand of an infant to his face. This allows him to focus on the object that he may be holding. Infants need to spend a vast amount of time on their tummy looking at the world in order to develop their sight fully. Being on the tummy also develops special awareness (being able to access the distance between objects). This in turn has an influence on crawling. Infants have what we call binocular vision and this is rectified slowly as the child learns to co-ordinate its eye movements with its head movements, allowing the development of normal muscle tone. Activities to promote this are tracking exercises and vestibular (movement) exercises, both of which are done extensively at Toptots. Infants prefer looking at contrasts like black and white, and look at red for longer than any other colour. They prefer looking at bold patterns, the contours of the circle and the edge of the square. Later they start looking into the shape for more detail. Healthy Lunchboxes for Healthy Minds

SUNFIELD HOME SCHOOL (LaNgHOLME) FOR THE INTELLECTUaLLY IMPaIRED admissions for 2014 still open!

School lunchboxes are an important part of a child’s diet as they need to provide sustained energy and ensure concentration throughout the school day. Here are some tips to create the ideal lunchbox for your child:

Sunfield Home School provides an enriched educational programme to intellectually impaired children within a loving, disciplined, safe, secure, stable and happy school and home-from-home environment, so that each child can reach his/her full potential. The motto of the school is “growing with love”. The school offers a boarding facility and specialised education which focuses on functional academics (i.e. language, maths and life skills).

Low GI foods: Low GI options such as low GI bread or rolls, Provitas, brown rice or pasta salads provide a constant supply of energy to the brain for concentration. Limit intake of processed foods, which causes surges in blood sugar levels which can negatively impact brain function. Reduce intake of added sugar by checking food labels; high sugar foods have more than 15g of sugar per 100g.

New admissions are done throughout the year. Please contact the school on 032 - 533 3632 or visit www.sunfieldhomeschool.co.za

Include protein rich foods: Protein rich foods can help sustain alertness and are a rich source of iron, which helps with concentration. Good options include home-made meatballs, hard boiled eggs, unsalted lean biltong, tuna, skinless chicken fillets or mozzarella cheese.

Hours: 7am - 5:30pm 031 - 562 9026

Healthy fats: The brain is about 60% fat, so it is vital to provide it with healthy fats and avoid trans fats and hydrogenated vegetable oils in processed foods. Omega 3s in oily fish or seeds and nuts, which are key to healthy brains, should be included in your child’s lunchbox once a week. Try making your own fishcakes or sprinkling salads with nuts or seeds. Five a day: A lunchbox should contain at least two portions of your child’s recommended five portions of fruit and vegetable per day. A portion size is roughly the size of your child’s fist. Fruit juice should only count as a maximum of one portion a day and should be limited to only 150ml. New Regulations on Travelling with Children

031 - 561 2371 074 135 9511

littleeinsteinsdbn@gmail.com

You may find this interesting if you are travelling out of South Africa with children. New regulations require that all parents arriving, transiting and departing from SA produce an unabridged birth certificate for their children as well as a valid passport. This new regulation is aimed at fighting child trafficking. The regulations came into effect at the end of May, but the Department of Home Affairs has delayed their implementation until 1 October, to make allowance for families who have already made plans for the upcoming school holidays. Here’s what you need to know: • When leaving South Africa with children, parents or guardians must be able to produce unabridged birth certificates reflecting the details of both parents, as well as a valid passport for each child. • If children are travelling with a guardian, this adult is required to produce affidavits from both parents giving permission for the children to travel. They will also need copies of the passports of the parents, as well as the contact details of the parents. • If children are travelling with only one parent, they must produce an unabridged birth certificate as well as: a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship in respect of the child, if he or she is the parent or legal guardian of the child; an affidavit from the other parent granting permission for the child to leave the country; a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship in respect of the child; and if applicable, the death certificate of the other parent registered on the birth certificate. www.mumsmail.com

Make Your Own Bath Paint for Sensitive Skin

would be careful with blonde hair. We had a quick shower when we were done!

We have found so many great bath paint recipes, however most of them contain soap, which is no problem for most kids, but if your child is like mine and has sensitive skin, this is a great alternative – it can be used every day, and it could not be more simple! Method: Equal amounts corn starch and water, mix well, and divide into a container – we used our ice tray, as it is great for little separate compartments!

And then we painted! First with a paint brush… and then with our hands… and then we tipped it all out – this was the really cool bit – and mixed and mixed and wiped and wiped… and then, once the fingers were wrinkled and eyes a little sleepy, we washed off in the shower and headed for bed, quite satisfied that we had played enough for one day! Source: Emma Owl, visit www.emmaowl. com/blog for more ideas.

Then add the food colouring into each compartment and mix well.

Tip: I used very little food colouring, and I have tested it on the bath already. Most will wash off the bath – and your child – if you give it all a spray once they are out. I Fun & Laughter with

The Christmas Fair Fund Fashion Show and Christmas Country Fair

SUNCOAST

The Christmas Fair Fund was started in 1952 by a group of concerned women in the Lower Tugela District to help schools, crèches and clinics in the area with much needed funding. It is a non-profit organisation and all funds raised are donated to local charitable organisations. The Christmas Fair Fund Fashion Show will be held on Thursday 28 August at 8.30am at Simbithi Country Club. Tickets cost R300 and include sparkling wine on arrival, a fashion show, light breakfast and a pop-up shop. The Designers on show will be Kathrin Kidger, Karen Monk Klijnstra, Carol Clark, Larisa Terblanche, Sibu Msimang, and kids’ clothing by One of a Kind – Cowgirlzz & Sticky Fudge. After the show guests will be able to meet the designers and have an opportunity to purchase items from the show and the designers’ ranges at the pop-up shop. All proceeds will go to charity projects on the North Coast. The 2014 Christmas Country Fair, to be held in Ballito on 29 and 30 October, will be the 62nd fair presented by the Stanger and District Christmas Fair Fund. As one of the fund’s major fundraising events every year, the fair has become a tradition and an institution on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. Stall holders and visitors from all over KZN participate in this two-day event, held in the beautiful gardens of Collisheen Estate, outside Ballito. The emphasis is on unique, locally produced or handcrafted merchandise, giving shoppers the ideal opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping. How to Help

● Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW): You can make a difference today by contributing as little as R100 a month to help CROW provide life-saving treatment to wildlife in distress and ensure that no animal goes untreated. To join CROW’s 1000 100 Club, visit www.crowkzn. co.za/1000-100-club. ● ACTION For Blind and Disabled Children is renting a portion of a building to train blind people to use Windows 8.1 and Microsoft Office 2013. They urgently need sponsorship to pay utilities, rent, specialist software for blind people and the tutor (a blind individual who is recognised by Microsoft to train fellow blind people). To help or donate, contact 011 – 760 2544 or visit www.action4.org.za. ● The Domino Foundation Golf Challenge will be held on 7 August at Beachwood Golf Course. To play, donate or sponsor, visit www.domino.org.za/golfday. ● The Sunflower Fund Golf Day will be held on 5 August at Mt Edgecombe Golf Club. To sponsor or play, contact Stephanie Berry on 078 207 9041, steph@sunlowerfund. co.za.
