Editor’s Life As I type this, the kids have JUST gone back to school, what a relief! My wallet is groaning under the strain of what felt like months of school holidays. And while there is a lot of “free” entertainment to make use of (the beach, playing at friends, skateboarding at the local parks etc), somehow the “I’m bored” lament is always followed by a request for entertainment that costs a whole heap of money.

LET ME PLAN YOUR FUNCTION FOR YOU
FABDecadent FUNCTIONS Elegant Dinners, High Teas, Ladies’ Lunches, Sweet 16,LETChristmas, Corporate Functions. ME PLAN YOUR FUNCTIONS FOR YOU!
Take going to the movies for example, besides the cost of the movie ticket (which can vary between R0 if you have a Discovery Vitality Kids’ Club Card and it is before 7pm, right up to over R100 for the fanciest cinema seats in the house), the cost of a “combo” snack (popcorn, a drink and sweets) is anything from R50 upwards. Movies have sadly become a rare luxury for most families. So what can you do for “free” nowadays? Living close to the sea, we have been taking advantage of the great weather by going to the beach most weekends, but if you have to travel far to get there, it’s not really “free”, is it? How about a picnic in your local park? And do you exercise with your kids? As a family we do the 5km Park Run every Saturday morning at 8am (it’s a worldwide event, so check out www.parkrun.co.za to find your closest venue), and while the kids certainly don’t do back flips about having to get out of bed at 7am on a Saturday, once they are up and moving, they do seem to have fun.

I write to thank you sincerely for mailing us copies of the Mum’s Mail since February last year. I started work at the newly opened children’s hospital in South Beach this year. Amongst the first things I decided to do was introduce reading material that parents are unlikely to get in the areas they live in. Mum’s Mail was it! The parents and nursing staff look forward to this little mag each month. God Bless. Dr Shireen Mohamed.

No Time to Exercise?
“I don’t have time” is the grown-up version of “the dog ate my homework”. Most people come with up with the excuse of “I don’t have time in my day to exercise.”
Answer honestly to yourself: • How much time do you sit at a hair salon? • How much time do you take to do your nails, waxing, facials and other beauty treatments? • How much time do you spend on social networks? • How much time do you spend shopping? You probably spend quite a lot of time doing all of the above, so why can’t you make time for 45 minutes to exercise? “I have a family to maintain and look after, I feel guilty enough that I have to work and not spend time with them, and if I go to the gym, then I’m being selfish.”
• Discuss your intentions with your partner and ask for his support and help with errands or looking after the kids. If he’s too busy or tired, get up at 4am when they’re all sleeping and head to the gym! • Create family time by ensuring you all wake up together, eat breakfast and dinner together with the TV off and chat about your day at school/work. • Leave weekends for real family time. Do some activities together as a family or go away together. • Encourage your family to lead a healthy lifestyle by setting the example by eating correctly and exercising regularly. Kini Girl will teach you how to balance work and family while still being able to lead a healthy and fit lifestyle.
Here are some tips to maintain balance and a healthy, happy home:

spent four mornings at Umcebo’s studios, doing all the beadwork that adorns the chandeliers and gives them their bushy and organic look.
The project sees Umcebo working in conjunction with the community by asking them to collect plastic, in the form of ice cream and yoghurt containers. These are then processed by Umcebo and the community via a number of workshops, into high-end and designer chandeliers. The pieces are not only selling to Umcebo’s private clients, but are also being curated into a collection of pieces which went on display at the Durban Art Gallery in November 2014. These pieces also became part of the Durban Art Galleries Permanent Collection.
The students enjoyed the work tremendously, and were excited and inspired to be part of the programme. Their teacher, Sonja Cavey, was excited to show the learners a working artist’s studio and to let them spend time creating work in this space, which will ultimately have a life in the Durban Art Gallery. It was apparent that the learners enjoyed themselves when they insisted on performing the school song, as well as their recycling song. Visit Umcebo Design’s website at www.umcebodesign.co.za and like their Facebook Page at Umcebo Design, where you can see all the images and video from the Tree Tops Workshops.

Valentine’s Day
Have a POSH Valentine It’s Valentine’s month! If you are single or simply not into the whole commercial “V” day, then why not celebrate with your close friends? Especially if you are single and ready to mingle, throw a Valentine’s dinner party! Our HOT POSH tips for hosting a Valentine’s dinner party:
Valentine’s Couple Special 2 full body massages & 2 mini manicures with paint - R300
(book by 14 February to qualify for special)
1. Mix it up: Especially if you are single, get together a group of singletons (male and female) to celebrate together and get ready to mingle. 2. Favours: Buy something inexpensive as a guest favour for each of your guests, which you can place on the table with a little fun Valentine note or poem that you have written. Try personalising each person’s poem, making it fun and unique.
VALENTINE’S SPECIAL
3. Decorate: Our favourite element of a dinner party! We love to decorate. You don’t have to go traditional red and white… spice it up with red and pink, or throw in silver or gold sequins to “Posh” it up! 4. Food and Drinks: Go to town with preparing and decorating your dinner and drinks. Cut heart shaped cookies, use strawberries with cream and chocolate, really get creative and in the Valentine’s mode! Your guests will appreciate the effort. For more information on a Posh Valentine, contact Tarryn Livsey at tarryn@poshparty.co.za or 078 200 8578. Visit their website on www.poshparty.co.za.

Staff Motivation
AK
Whilst conducting an employee satisfaction survey with a client recently, Sprout Consulting was not entirely surprised to find that 30% of the respondents felt that they were not being properly rewarded. They base their HR philosophy on the Herzberg two factor theory to facilitate their thinking on employee satisfaction. The first factors are hygiene factors, with the rule of thumb being that these can’t enhance performance, but the absence of them will cause dissatisfaction e.g. satisfactory pay and decent working conditions. The motivator factors are used to enhance the performance of the team, including recognition and promotion possibilities. If John’s salary is R25 000 per month, he will cost the company in excess of R1 million over three years, factoring in all the costs of employment. Most assets have a useful life of three years. The thought that goes into acquiring an asset for R1 million, and the maintenance that will happen to make it last three years, should be no different to the decision to hire John and keep him working at full capacity. Find out if there is dissatisfaction in your team and what staff need to perform at their best, and then put a plan in place to manage it. This may change your staff attitudes without changing your payroll costs. Sprout Consulting can assist you with the ‘hard and soft’ skill approach to staff motivation. For more information, contact info@sproutconsulting.co.za or 086 1476 9669. Like the Sprout Consulting Facebook page, and subscribe to the newsletters via www. sproutconsulting.co.za/contact-us-now/. Delicious Life
Fine Greek Fare at The Food Market The Hellenic Welfare Society supports and raises funds for disadvantaged and aged people. The society runs a food stall at The Food Market in Durban North. They sell nowhere else and as a charity they rely on the funds they make to support people in our community who need assistance. The three Greek ladies who prepare the food for the monthly market, held at the Hellenic Conference Centre on the last Saturday of every month, have learnt their skill from their mothers and grandmothers. These ladies are quite shy about their achievements, but the society can offer the wonderful food they do because of the monthly behind-the-scenes contributions of Maria, Alexia and Maroula. Few people realise how labour intensive Greek cooking is. These three ladies have managed to make it look really easy and the Hellenic Welfare Society is truly grateful to them. Visitors to the monthly stand are spoilt for choice on the sweet side in the form of kourapiedes (top quality Greek shortbread), bougatsa (decadent custard enclosed in a phyllo casing) and of course the ubiquitous baklava which everyone knows. On the savoury side, they offer delicious spinach and feta pies, lamb and feta pies, as well as Greek home-cooked meals to be eaten at home later.

Healthy Veggie Eating Habits to Teach Your Children
COOKING COOKS STUDIO SIMPLE, FRESH & YUMMY
Teaching you how to cook fabulous food the easy way
BEGINNERS’ CLASSES
The easiest way to encourage healthy eating habits in children is to set a good example. Fry’s Family Foods recommends the following seven vegetarian habits for children: 1. Make your diet colourful. A colourful diet can boost your grey matter. Our brains benefit from a wide variety of vitamins and minerals derived from a diversity of fruits and vegetables. 2. Pick fresh fruit. Fresh fruit is better than dried fruit because it doesn’t have the high sugar concentration or extra preservatives. 3. Have a sandwich rather than a snack bar. A sandwich is better than a snack bar. Whole-wheat bread is a wonderful source of B vitamins and fibre and when topped with sugar-free peanut butter, is a scrumptious and sustainable snack. 4. Go nuts. Nuts and seeds contain brain nutrients, so pack a small daily snack pack including pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, mixed nuts and some raisins for fun. 5. Let kids choose from a healthy selection. Kids find it fun to pack their own food so provide a healthy selection of snacks and leave the final decision the little ones. 6. Add sprouts. Sprouts, such as alfalfa, can be home-grown and harvested to make sandwiches more exciting and healthy, and kids can have fun sprouting their own meals. 7. Hydrate with water. Water should be the main, if not the only source of hydration. Other drinks can fill up little tummies, thereby displacing the intake of proper food.

Are you looking to buy or sell a property, or do you own a property that you have altered in any way? Have you got up-todate plans and have they been submitted and approved by the local authorities? Many property owners don’t know whether their properties have up-to-date records at the council, or whether any changes done by the previous owner have been submitted and approved. This can affect your rates, as well as delay the sale of your property. This could have financial and legal consequences and can lead to prosecution or a fine. The council can order the owner to restore the property to its original state. This is even more severe with properties that are older than 60 years, since this has to be submitted and approved by the AMAFA heritage committee.

With regulations changing regularly and building laws moving towards first-world standards, energy efficiency in buildings becomes more important, thus traditional ways of building have to be updated in certain ways, and your builder might be happy to build the way he’s always built. This becomes an issue when plans have to be updated and sent for approval to council, and the material used and the application of materials don’t comply with new standards. Ginja Launches The Dirty Fork Kitchen After only four weeks of preparation the doors were opened to The Dirty Fork Kitchen Studio, based at the Ginja Food Magazine offices in Durban North. The concept for the kitchen studio is to offer the public and companies the opportunity to take part in function hire and company team building, cooking demos, classes and courses, recipe production, recipe development, production food studio, food styling and photography, product and cookbook launches, as well as chef collaborations. What better way to demonstrate the purpose of the kitchen than to invite a few media guests to a launch to remember? Chef Jacqui Brown welcomed the media guests with drinks and snacks before leading them into the highly anticipated The Dirty Fork Kitchen Studio. What lay before them were tables set out with the makings of the perfect paella.
Grouped in teams of two, each team was set the task of creating the perfect dish under the guidance of Chef Jacqui Brown, and joining her in the kitchen to assist the ladies was Chef Bianca Westhorpe-Pattow. As if this were not enough pressure for the ladies, they were then told that their dishes would be tasted by both chefs at the Ginja office and a prize awarded for the best dish. Once their dishes were cooked, presented and tasted by the chefs, the ladies sat together and enjoyed their meals, whilst Chef Jacqui Brown demonstrated how to make her incredibly delicious vanilla bean ice cream with grilled pineapple and a rum-infused caramel sauce dessert. Mothers Are People Too We seldom allow ourselves to be honest about just how testing parenthood can be on our lives, our bodies and our relationships. Although motherhood must be one of the most privileged aspects of being a woman, it also seems to have its way of turning a woman’s life upside down in ways she could never have prepared herself for. Motherhood is undoubtedly full of precious moments, but it also is a time when you risk losing ownership of your life. Your body, your time and even much needed sleep, are no longer your own. Weeks are measured in segments of feeding, changing and rocking to sleep. Despite the modern pressures to be everything to everyone, amazingly, women manage to cope. However, as a therapist, I have come to appreciate the long-term consequences of complete self-abandon to parenthood. It’s a juggling act of family needs in which mothers often drop themselves. They come to me years later with a sense of “Where did I lose myself?”

Here are a few suggestions: • You are entitled to find motherhood overwhelming at times. When you do, reach out. • Try to put aside some time for adult occasions: a hot date with your husband, coffee with friends, movies that don’t require 3-D glasses. • Although not always practically possible, never underestimate the value of a full night’s sleep. • Don’t be afraid to reclaim your body: find an excuse to dress up or take a run on the beachfront. • One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is a fulfilled mother: Don’t give up on that personal dream. Paddling in Support of The Sunflower Fund Danielle Barrie-Smith will take on the epic Dusi Canoe Marathon, which runs from 19 to 21 February, in the name of a great cause as she paddles in support of The Sunflower Fund. This annual event covers roughly 120km (75 miles) between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, through some of the most challenging canoeing terrain. In this true test of physical endurance, Danielle is challenging all other canoeists attempting the Dusi 2015 to join her efforts of raising much-needed awareness and funds for The Sunflower Fund. The Sunflower Fund is the only organisation in South Africa to actively educate and recruit potential bone marrow stem cell donors for inclusion on the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), to give hope to patients diagnosed with leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders who are searching for their 1 in 100 000 bone marrow stem cell match.
It is unlikely that a patient’s match will be found outside their ethnic background, which presents a huge logistical and financial challenge to The Sunflower Fund in building and maintaining an ethnically diverse registry representative of the South African population. It is through fundraising and awareness campaigns such as the 75Miles4Marrow Dusi Canoe Marathon campaign that The Sunflower Fund, with the help of community champions like Danielle, can carry out their good work. If you would like to sponsor Danielle, financial contributions can be made in favour of The Sunflower Fund, ABSA Tokai (632005), Account: 4051834719 with the reference DBNM4M74 and your full name.

Healthy Choices for Children Research shows that up to 90% of cancers are caused by environmental and lifestyle factors. Many adult cancers are linked to exposure to environmental carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) during childhood. Parents therefore have a responsibility to promote lifestyle choices that lower the cancer risks of their children. With World Cancer Day coming up on 4 February, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) recommends the following cancer-smart behaviour: Adopt a balanced family lifestyle. A healthy diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, plant-based proteins such as soya, and only small amounts of meat. Children should do at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day and adults should do 30 minutes. Avoid known carcinogens in the environment. The two best known are tobacco and UV rays from the sun. However, there are also some lesser-known environmental carcinogens: • Smoke from open fires; children should be kept away from direct smoke. • Hepatitis B (linked to liver cancer); childhood vaccination programmes must be adhered to. • Human Papilloma virus (HPV, linked with cervical cancer). A vaccine is currently being rolled out in government schools and through some private doctors. • Acrylamides (possibly linked to kidney and endometrial cancers). These are found in potato crisps, so intake should be limited! • Transfats; food with more than 2% transfatty acids should be avoided, like confectionary, processed foods and some margarines. • Bisphenol A (BPS); plastics bearing a triangle containing the number 7 underneath should be avoided. BPA free plastics are preferable. • Platicisers; plasticiser-free cling wrap should be used such as Glad Wrap and in-house brands at most supermarkets.

Brooklyn Rex has been diagnosed with a combination of HLH and Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (SJIA) called Macrophage Activation Syndrome (MAS). These rare conditions are severe, lifethreatening disorders. She is currently on high dose immunosuppression treatment, including biologics which come at a great cost to the family, who live in isolation most of the time. The family, with both mom and dad having been retrenched in the last few months, are currently looking to relocate to Cape Town to get further treatment at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital because specialised treatment overseas would cost upwards of R10 million, needed in advance. What is HLH? Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an aggressive, life-threatening syndrome of excessive HOLISTIC WELLNESS immune activation. Prompt initiation of CENTRE treatment for HLH is essential for the survival of affected patients. not indented at all, they are actually firm bumps raised above the surface of the skin. This type of acne scarring is most commonly found on the chest and back. • Discolouration: There are two main types of discoloration after acne, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and post-inflammatory erythema (reddish spots).
Acne scarring may arise in different forms. It occurs due to the intense inflammation that occurs mainly in cystic acne. The inflammation damages the collagen in the deeper layers, resulting in collagen loss that causes indentations on the skin. Bad Eating Habits Making South Africans Obese A report published in medical journal The Lancet, indicating that South Africa has the highest percentage of people who are obese in sub-Saharan Africa, is concerning because obesity is one of the main risk factors for heart disease, certain forms of cancer and diabetes. This phenomenon is examined in brand new CBS Reality series Half Ton Hospital. The biggest contributors to this epidemic is unhealthy eating and a lack of exercise. Many people, including children, spend a large part of the day sitting passively in front of the TV or a computer. The study indicates that the proportion of women who were overweight or obese in SA was 69.3% in 2013, with the men at 38.8%.
diabetes and osteoarthritis. It also increases the risk of cardio-respiratory related death. The current rise in cardiovascular deaths is due to the high rates of hypertension, dyslipidaemia, type 2-diabetes and sleep apnoea. It is important to watch what one eats. Eating fresh fruit and vegetables has long-term health benefits. They provide essential vitamins and minerals, fibre and other substances that are important for good health. Most fruit and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories and are filling. The fight against obesity begins with healthier eating habits; just a few simple changes on your plate are all it takes. Add another change: take that daily walk. For more insight on ways to deal with obesity catch the reality show Half Ton Hospital on CBS Reality (DStv channel 132).
Obesity puts one at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, cancer,
Neil Viranna and Eddie Bodha would like to inform their colleagues, patients and friends of the relocation of their practices at Mt Edgecombe and Umhlanga Hospital Medical Centre. The new practices boast the latest equipment and upgraded facility that caters for a variety of conditions. Our approach is evidence based in which each patient undergoes a detailed examination to assist in establishing the source of pain as opposed to the site of pain. The overall aim is to assist in relieving pain and restore function. Therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation is one of the cornerstones of physiotherapy and in addition to “hands-on” care, we aim to educate patients to empower themselves to take control of their conditions and to assist in the recurrence of injuries.

New ADHD Therapy Improves Overall Performance Often ADHD sufferers have co-occurring mood disorders, and many receive an incorrect diagnosis. New to SA is a treatment option with 20 years of scientific backing: Interactive Metronome Therapy. It could change your child’s life. The traditional treatment option for ADHD has always been medication, and while this may help to focus the attention and lengthen the concentration span, this same medication may dampen down your child’s natural talent in a particular area. IM works with the use of headphones and hand/or foot sensors to measure how close the candidate’s responses are to a computer-generated beat. The programme involves 12 sessions, of approximately 30 to 45 minutes each. Game-like features engage the trainee with auditory and visual guidance, which provides feedback while encouraging improved scores. The science behind the therapy is complex but, in brief, IM improves the efficiency of a person’s timing in the brain. In turn, this increases neural efficiency, which produces more efficient communication between critical brain networks. Because IM exercises and builds the core mental skills necessary for controlled attention, purposeful movement, working memory and the processing of info, its application extends with great success to: • athletes wishing to improve their speed and timing on the sports field, or those coming back from injury; • scholars looking to extend their attention span while studying for year-end exams; • children with a wide range of learning difficulties, who may be underperforming for their IQ; • musicians and dancers needing to fine-tune their motor skills before a big performance; • the elderly who may be concerned with declining memory and/or physical function.

The Importance of Daily Liver Protection Your liver is one of your most important organs and is essential for your everyday health. It performs over 500 vital functions in your body. In fact, we can survive just two days if it shuts down; therefore daily protection of it should be a priority. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a term used to describe the accumulation of fat in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol. NAFLD occurs when your liver has trouble breaking down fats, causing lipids to build up in your liver tissue. The lipid build-up may affect the way the liver functions. Are you at risk for NAFLD? There are many lifestyle factors, diseases and conditions which may increase your risk of NAFLD, but quite simply you are at greater risk the older you are, if you are overweight or obese, suffer from insulin resistance or diabetes, use chronic medicines like corticosteroids, have high
cholesterol or suffer with sleep apnoea. Ways to reduce your risk factors: • Lose weight: Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for NAFLD. • Eat healthy: A healthy diet will go a long way in helping control NAFLD. • Be active: Aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. • Protect your liver: Avoid things that will put extra stress on your liver. Limit alcohol and fatty food intake and supplement with daily Essential Phospholipids (EPLs), which have been cited as one of the most important support nutrients for the liver. A supplement used in combination with healthy lifestyle choices contributes to replenishing what your lifestyle takes away from your body, especially the liver. Pain Free Hair Removal The Soprano XLi Pain-Free, Hair-Free™ treatment is the next generation of virtually painless laser hair removal treatments specially designed to remove unwanted hair faster, more comfortably, and with fewer visits. After only a few treatments you will be left with silky smooth skin and free from daily shaving, painful plucking and expensive waxing. The system’s unique IN-Motion™ technology, along with the sweeping motion of the laser, safely and gently heats the targeted area under your skin while you stay comfortable The Soprano Pain-Free, Hair-Free™ laser system gradually heats the hair follicles in the sub-dermal layer of your skin using pulses of infrared diode laser energy until they can no longer produce new hair. Using unique, IN-Motion™ technology and a patented DualChill™ treatment tip, the surface of your skin stays cool and comfortable. The laser is in constant motion enabling a much wider area to be treated more quickly and easily than ever before. By using a sweeping, paintbrush technique, the Soprano Pain-Free, HairFree™ system reduces procedure time, minimises discomfort and eliminates any missed areas, common with other types of laser hair removal. The procedure usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area to be treated. On average four to six treatments are required.

Jagged Edge Hair Salon Having thick, wild, curly hair that is prone to frizz is never fun, especially in Durban’s humid climate. I know this all too well, as I have this type of hair! Certain products can help, but if you’re looking for a more permanent solution then you should try the Diora Keratin treatment, also commonly known as a Brazilian. The Diora Keratin treatment is formaldehyde free (I checked!) and perfectly safe to use. My treatment was done by Jolene Van der Merwe at Jagged Edge Hair Salon in Durban North, who says it’s very popular and the results are great on everybody. The Keratin Protein Treatment consists of three steps (activate, smooth and seal) and takes from one-and-a-half to three hours, depending on the thickness and length of the hair. The product penetrates the cuticle of the hair, which is then blow dried and flat ironed, with the results being manageable, frizz-free hair!
STYLE ME IMAGE CONSULTING

I noticed a big difference in my hair, to the extent that I can dry it without using a flat iron and my hair is much softer and free of frizz and excess curls, but still has body. This treatment will last anywhere from three to four months and is fine for colour treated hair too. This is the perfect treatment to get unruly hair under control and looking fabulous! For more information, contact Jolene at Jagged Edge Hair Salon on 031 – 564 4440 or email jolenevandermerwe1979@gmail.com. Review by Bev Delew for Mum’s Mail.

Long Lasting Glowing Skin Skin exfoliation is the mechanical removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, to keep the skin soft, supple and radiant. The skin’s natural process of exfoliation is called desquamation and it is an ongoing process where dead skin cells are shed as new ones are produced. This process generally takes about twenty-eight days, but can take as long as seventy-five days, depending on age and the condition of the skin. We all know how gorgeous, radiant and plump a baby’s skin is and needless to say, a younger skin is more efficient at desquamation than the skin of our grandparents for instance.

Mumzy – Your All in One, Mum!
Baby Bygones
Mumzy was developed when one of the founders had a baby and kept asking her husband to go to the shops to get baby products. She found that items got lost in a big baby bag. As baby grew, the weight of baby and a baby bag gave her the idea to come up with something more convenient in which to carry all the necessary items.
• We sell secondhand baby items • We offer a baby equipment cleaning service • We hire out baby equipment for visitors 031 - 701 0243 • 082 455 6068 2 Paige Place, Bamboo Lane, Pinetown
Inside the Mumzy bag you will find all the items you need when going out with your baby. It can also be used as a guideline for new moms, as it gives them an idea of what they need to keep on hand.
Newborn Baby Outreach Lindy 083 607 4498 Lisa 083 293 0932 To provide newborn babies with essentials that many of us take for granted e.g. clothes, baby blankets, baby soap, powder and vaseline.
To keep costs down, the founders stuck to basic necessities. They wanted small items for the Mumzy, so they met with the companies involved, who agreed to sell them their sample sizes to use in the bags.
Mums, please donate newborn baby clothes, baby products and blankets you no longer require to give these little angels and their Mums a true “Positive Beginning” to life. Positive Beginnings - CRC non-profit organisation reg no 028-472-NPO
Items included in the Mumzy are: Bennetts baby bum cream, Bennetts Eazi-breather stick, Bennetts Aqueous bath drops, Johnson’s baby powder, baby wipes, four cotton wool ear buds, two kids’ plasters, one thermometer, one plastic baby teaspoon, three nappy bags and a hand sanitizer for mom. These items can be refilled. The Mumzy provides the convenience of a small bag to pop under your arm or into a baby bag, without the heaviness of large items that you use at home. When you change your baby, you open the bag and it lies flat with all the items clearly visible through the clear plastic. Contact Kathryn Becker, KZN distributor, 072 095 7430. These Shoes Are Meant For Walking Are they really? The best shoes for your toddler are NO SHOES at all! Walking barefoot helps build arches and strengthens ankles. Walking on uneven surfaces like sand and grass helps to further strengthen those muscles, and adds great tactile experiences to the sensory system. Running and playing outside is best done without shoes. Climbing a jungle gym, your toddler has better balance without shoes as they are able to feel the rung and “grasp” it with their foot. So what about that special occasion where shoes will complete the outfit? Choose shoes that are closest to no shoes. They must be flexible. Leather or rubber soles are best. You should easily be able to bend the shoe between your thumb and forefinger. The shoes must be low cut and preferably be leather so they can breathe. The high cut shoes stay on better but experts believe they restrict ankle movement. Flat bottoms with no heel are a must! Heels are lovely for play but not to wear out or for everyday walking. Only allow your daughters to wear heels at around 18 when the bones in the feet are better formed. Look for soft flexible shoes in leather with plenty of room for those cute toes to move in. Bigger is better. Keep checking the fit as they seem to grow overnight. Don’t pass on shoes to siblings and friends as shoes mould to the foot, and wearing shoes that have moulded to someone else’s foot is not a good idea. Enjoy seeing those gorgeous bare feet running around; it’s good for them! By Liz Victor. Contact: TOPTOTS, Kim Clark, 074 138 6400, kim@toptots.co.za, www.toptots.co.za. 55

Your Child’s Mouth Can Tell a Story The oral cavity of a child is a canvas depicting the health or ill health of all systems in the body. Medical literature explicitly says that a change in one’s general health can contribute to a change in one’s oral health and vice versa. Many undiagnosed systemic conditions may manifest orally first. Studies have shown that children with asthma, uncontrolled diabetes and congenital heart diseases have increased caries (rotten teeth), gingivitis (gum disease), oral candidiasis (fungal infection), eroded enamel (rough tooth surfaces) and in asthmatic children, a greater need for orthodontic corrections. Children born with gastro esophageal reflux are often plagued with eroded teeth from the gastric acids and nutritional deficiencies. Vitamin B deficiency can result in a burning mouth sensation with inflammation and oral ulcers, swollen tongue or fissures at the corner of the mouth. Many preteens and teenagers today are prone to eating disorders, resulting in either obesity or anorexia. Obesity has been linked to increased periodontitis (gum disease with bone loss) and anorexia, with purging, leads to further eroded tooth surfaces. Very often it is the dentist who sees the first signs of a teenager who is purging. Children who have to take chronic medication are often plagued with side effects in the mouth, such as swollen gums in the case of epileptic children, a dry mouth or fungal infections from immunosuppressive drugs.

What to Do: • First, spread out some newspaper and put the glass on it. • Then, fill a jug halfway with water and add a few drops of food colouring. • Soak the string in water, then tie one end of the string to the handle of the jug. Let the other end of the string hang into the glass. • Stretch the string tightly across the top of the jug, while holding the other end of the string against the side of the glass. • Now, slowly pour the water along the string. Keep trying until you find the right angle for the water to run down the string. • Be amazed how the water runs along the string and doesn’t pour out onto the newspaper! So What? There are three forces at work in this experiment: gravity, adhesion, and cohesion. Gravity pulls the water down towards Earth. Adhesion attracts water to other objects. Cohesion attracts water molecules to other water molecules. In this experiment adhesion attracts the water to the string and cohesion keeps the water flowing in a steady stream. NB: Do this experiment over some newspaper. It can get a little messy! Source: KZN Science Centre, 031 – 830 5379, www.kznsc.org, www.facebook.com/KZNScienCentre. 61

TV and Your Baby The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends no TV under the age of two. The Australian government recommends that children under two should be banned from watching TV and all other forms of electronic media. France has banned all TV for children under three. So why are these three countries taking such a radical view, when 67% of South Africans polled by The Baby Expo, believe that TV for babies is okay? Reading through various research projects, it would appear that there is overwhelming evidence that TV and electronic media is in fact bad for babies and children under three, as it puts brain development at risk. Dr Dimitri Christakis has shown that brain development is inhibited by TV because it provides too much sensory input that is too fast for the baby’s brain. This not only does not aid the development of those important synapses, it actually reduces attention span and neglects to activate the important regions of the brain such as problem solving and language. The more TV watched by the age of three, the more likely the child is to have attention problems by the age of seven. Each hour of TV watching before three increases the likelihood by 10%. On the other hand, each hour of cognitive stimulation provided by reading to the child, talking or playing with blocks etc., reduces the likelihood of attention problems by 30%. So, would you allow your little one to engage in an activity that is likely to change the way his brain develops or damage his body through inactivity? The LEARN Project The LEARN Project reaches out to schools and children in need. The goal is to equip these schools with reading books and stationery to create a positive learning environment where both teachers and learners can reach their full potential.
books encourage learners to ‘reuse and recycle’ any stationery or books they no longer need, donating them to help those who are less fortunate to excel at school.
Books and stationery supplies are essential to fostering a positive and effective learning environment. Many South African schools, however, do not have the resources to supply their learners with these essential materials. Most of the children in these schools have never even been into a library.
Ros Toerien and Lucy Pienaar, two likeminded friends, with a shared desire to motivate and inspire teachers and learners, discovered they shared a vision of making a difference in South African schools. Ros, a mother and teacher, and Lucy, a mother and businesswoman, came together to start The LEARN Project. They welcome on board any interested friends, families, businesses, or schools with a heart to make a difference and assist schools in need to make important changes in reading and learning.
The LEARN Project aims to establish reading centres and programmes in schools that are currently without reading books and to encourage a love for reading and learning in both teachers and learners. This aim is supported by a buddy-system with more fortunate schools where collection points for second-hand stationery and pre-loved

Sunfield Home School International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed on 3 December 2014. Sunfield Home School is just one of the many local schools dedicated to educating intellectually impaired learners. This charming little boarding school was established in 1972 in the country environment of Canelands, a 15 minute drive inland from Mt Edgecombe. Sunfield Home School offers a unique educational experience to intellectually impaired learners between the age of six and 23 years. The school aims to educate children of all cultures to become self-sufficient, confident, happy members of society who reach their full potential with dignity and grace. The school offers specialised education with the focus on literacy, numeracy and life-skills. Learners are also exposed to gardening, pottery, cookery, music, arts and crafts, haircare, woodwork, educational outings and sports. Learning phases consist of the Pre-
Vocational, Senior, Intermediate and Junior Groups. A qualified educator, supported by an educational assistant for each small class group, recognises that disabled learners have more abilities than disabilities and they ensure that learning is fun and relevant to each child’s aptitude. The boarding establishment offers a home from home environment in three age-related hostels, with a high ratio of staff to children, so that everyone is treated as an individual. The children are encouraged to develop their personalities, recreational interests and life-skills in a structured, secure, loving atmosphere while learning how to be as independent as possible and a credit to themselves. The school’s motto “Growing with Love” is central to its holistic approach in recognising that every child’s abilities outweigh their disabilities. New admissions are taken throughout the year. Free Visual Skills and Reading Assessments • Is your child reading below their grade level? • Is your child falling behind in class? • Is your child a slow reader? • Is your child a reluctant and struggling reader? • Does your child fare poorly in comprehension skills? The Reading Optics Centre, therapists in visual and reading skills, has been borne out of years of working with individuals with visual stress due to inefficient visual skills that relate to reading. Many of these individuals have spent years undergoing remedial therapy with little progress (according to parents and teachers) as the visual skills of the individual had not been addressed. This has led to much frustration for the individual and many of these people have become “smart but struggling learners” and reluctant readers. Once the visual stress has been removed and the visual skills have been improved upon, reading becomes easier, thus impacting the whole learning experience. Reading Optics Centre uses an infra-red eye recording Visagraph to ascertain whether a child’s visual system is working efficiently to cope with the demands made on them during school. They can pinpoint (scientifically and accurately) the amount of fixations, regressions, length of eye span and the words per minute that is read. The long-term consequences of visual stress during reading are serious, since successful schooling usually determines career choices.

Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense KickstArt, in association with Pieter Toerien, is proud to present the South African premiere of the smash hit West End comedy Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, which comes to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on UKZN campus from 4 to 15 February. Join Jonathan Roxmouth as the effervescent, aristocratic fool Bertie Wooster and Graham Hopkins as his dutiful valet, Jeeves, with Robert Fridjhon as Seppings in the critically acclaimed stage play Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, adapted from the works of PG Wodehouse. When a country house weekend takes a turn for the worse, Bertie Wooster is unwittingly called on to play matchmaker, but also to steal a silver cow creamer from Totleigh Towers. Naturally, the ever dependable Jeeves is there to prevent Bertie from making a complete fool of himself in front of a cast of Wodehouse’s finest characters. Featuring three of South Africa’s greatest actors, and directed and designed by
Durban’s own theatrical dream team, Steven Stead and Greg King, this riotous romp is guaranteed to tickle the funny bone and bring a smile to even the most cynical theatre goer. This is ideal theatre fare for anyone aged eight to 80! Performances are scheduled for 7.30pm (Tuesday to Saturday), 2.30pm (Saturday) and 6pm (Sunday). There will be a Valentine’s Day gala performance on Saturday 14 February at 7.30pm, with welcoming glasses of sparkling wine included in the ticket price. Support SASA’s amaShuga Walk for Wellness Organisers Nerve Events and Diabetes SA are stepping out with the launch of the aptly named SASA amaShuga Walk for Wellness – an exciting re-invention of what used to be the Global Diabetes Walk Durban. The SASA amaShuga Walk for Wellness will kick off on Sunday 15 March at 8am. It will start from the Amphitheatre on the Lower Marine Parade. There’ll also be a wellness expo at the Amphitheatre where free blood sugar and blood pressure checks will take place. According to Jenny Russell from Diabetes SA, a Stats SA report issued on 4 September 2014 showed that Diabetes is the second highest cause of death in eThekwini Metro, and the third highest cause of death in KZN! “The aim of the walk is to educate people about Diabetes which is reaching epidemic proportions globally. South Africa is not immune. Overweight and obesity is an emerging health problem in KZN, particularly among women,” she said.

Proudly South African Sports Company Teamplay Trading specialises in the sourcing, supply, marketing and distribution of sports equipment and apparel to the South African market (cricket, rugby, hockey, football, netball, skateboards and scooters). With 23 years of experience under his belt, owner Daryl Scott continually pushes boundaries in terms of product, development and concept in the industry. He created the Wasp brand in 1994 and sold it to Mr Price in 2004. In 2012, Teamplay was given the Shosholoza licence for sports equipment in order to create a truly African and South African sports brand. Teamplay supplies Shosholoza sports products direct from the factories to the customer, offering the best product at the best price through its three Teamplay Sports Factory Shops and Teamplay website (www.teamplay. co.za). Teamplay has just launched the “Play The Game” initiative which allows consumers the convenience of purchasing products from home. This is especially helpful to moms, who often have no idea where to begin when it comes to sporting equipment. Daryl often has moms coming to him and saying “please kit my child out”. Daryl helps them with sizes and expert advice. Now moms can benefit from this service from the comfort of their homes. For more information or to order, visit www.teamplay.co.za/83-catalogue. Teamplay sells a Shosholoza cricket starter pack (R1 500) for children going into grade three. “Most parents don’t know what to buy first time around, so we just point them in the right direction without it costing them too much,” explained Scott.

State Of The Nation’s Kids Revealed Spiderman and Tinkerbell are more popular amongst our kids than Zuma and Gaga! Real-life famous figures take second place to fictional heroes, according to the results of the Parent24 Kids’ Nation Survey. South Africa’s leading parenting website conducted SA’s first Kids’ Nation Survey in order to determine what our kids are really up to. The survey results reflect the views of approximately 2 700 parents and their kids, from all nine provinces. The Parent24 Kids’ Nation Survey looked at various areas of interest, including food, entertainment, the future, discipline, school/care, money and elections. Questions such as “Does or has your child ever had an imaginary friend?”, “How often does your child throw tantrums?” and “What word does your child use if they swear?” were asked to dig deep into the psyche of our children. “We decided to run the annual Kids’ Nation Survey to establish what parents and their children have and how they are really behaving,” said Scott Dunlop, editor of Parent24. “We found the results of the survey intriguing,” he added, “The diverse responses allowed us into the homes of SA’s parents and revealed some interesting, funny and curious insights.” A few interesting findings: • Broccoli is South Africa’s most hated vegetable and that 62% of kids eat takeaways up to three times a week. • 23% of South African kids have their own cell phone or tablet. • Most parents (41%) feel that reasoning is the best discipline, while a whopping 30% opt for a smack on the bum.

Spread green butter icing over the Marie biscuit and place a green cupcake case on top, slightly towards the back. Cut out a section of the jelly ring. Using glacé icing, stick the sour worm onto the cupcake case, then stick the second cupcake case, upside down, to the bottom case, to form the head (the worm keeps the mouth open). For the eyes, cut a Jelly Tot in half and use the green glacé icing to stick the two halves on top of the cupcake case. Use the green glacé icing to stick a silver sugar ball in front of each Jelly Tot. Makes 10. Source: Easy Party Treats For Children by Janette Mocke.

Mayfair Café – Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Calling all schools! Do you have an event you want to share with us? Information on your school? Or perhaps a star pupil you want us to know about? Send your stories and photos to editor@mumsmail.com and it may get published on our website blog for free!
It’s more like a European Café, where people who have never met occasionally share a table and friendships are built. Regulars will tell you that it’s one big happy family. The big table in the corner is often shared by businessmen catching up on e-mails and making new connections. The food is served with the love of a home cooked meal. The menu is full of yummy wonders and if you would like to change something on it, like an egg instead of cheese, they will do it without question. The owner, Dean Clark, is there to greet you with a warm smile, a joke or a coffee on the house. He has built a team of staff who are well trained, attentive to detail, and don’t miss a thing. They know what you want even before you sit down. It’s not odd to see a couple arrive with their two Scotties who get a bowl of water as soon as they settle outside with their owners, or to see a group of ladies laughing and chatting. Even better news is that Mayfair Café is expanding and will be opening in the front section of the Woolworths Centre. Only the venue will change; the same service, warmth and excellent food will be there. Just more tables for more fun. Contact: 031 – 563 2599, Woolworths Centre, Mackeurtan Ave, Durban North.
