Happy New Year! I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year! Our festive break was spent chasing all over the UK visiting friends and family, most of whom we hadn’t seen for over a year – we had such a wonderful time, although we were so exhausted that we needed another holiday when we got back, so decided to go camping for a few days on the South Coast. The weather was lovely, for the most part, the kids met lots of friends, little Nunu got to run around on the beach and we simply relaxed and spent a few wonderful days together as a family, which was pure bliss! We certainly needed it as we have been very busy over the last few months - you will read more about our latest project ‘Who Needs The Mall’ on the centre pages. We encourage you to go over to have a look at www.whoneedsthemall.com and support our local crafters. This fantastic marketplace is being used to promote beautiful and unusual, locally produced, handmade African goods. We are adding new ranges and ‘Shops’ all the time and I’m sure that this year will be a very busy one. We have also just launched our brand new Mum’s Mail website – it now features lots of wonderful articles, of course our ever popular competitions, and an interactive Online Directory and Events page. You can even submit your own Articles and Events, free of charge, so be sure to check it out and see what all the hype is about, at www. mumsmail.com. Finally, we are now in full swing organising the 5th Annual PMB Ladies Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund, which will be held on 23 March 2018 in PMB, and you can read more about this year’s event in this issue. Have a wonderful February and Happy Valentine’s Day! Victoria xxx www.mumsmail.com

Cover Stars
Meet the Cover Stars
Our handsome cover stars this month are brothers Shriyan Raahi Kanniappen (7) and Aari Jordan Kanniappen (1 year and 7 months). Their mom, Sasha Singh, is a speech-language therapist and their dad, Sagaren Kanniappen, is the Chief Operating Officer at an IT company. Shriyan is a shy boy, well - mannered and thoughtful but he can get very noisy when around other kids his age. He would rather play chess than attend a birthday party. His hobbies include chess, swimming, golf and cooking classes. He loves riding around the neighbourhood on his hover board which his grandfather bought him for his birthday. He’s technologically savvy like his dad and is more fluent with the i-Pad, X-box and all their connections than his mom is!
laughing or has a smile on his face. He only ever cries when he gets hurt or is sick.” He loves imitating his older brother but always with much more vigour and enthusiasm than the original action. Aari loves food and his mom says he is the youngest kid she knows who is able to tolerate spicy food. As a family they love travelling and school holidays are rarely spent at home. Quieter weekends are spent at home in their garden. Watching movies is another of their favourite pastimes.
“Providing a happy and stable environment for my children fills me with such joy. Giving them opportunities that we never had as kids and watching them flourish is the best part of being a parent. The overwhelming love and devotion I feel towards them is both incredible and terrifying, however with their Aari is the polar opposite of Shriyan and is love in return I know that I am achieving my full of energy and mischief. “My nickname purpose in this world,” concludes Sasha. for him is “masti” which is Hindi for “funWritten by Sarah Mackintosh loving”,” says his mom. “He is always

Five Fundamental Financial New Year’s Resolutions What are your financial New Year’s resolutions? Are you ready to get your finances in order and wave a final goodbye to your debt woes? Zeeva shares five fundamental financial resolutions that you can incorporate in 2018: Take a thorough look at your bank statements You cannot determine where your monthly income is going if you don’t ‘inspect’ your leakages. Print out your bank statements of the last few months and see where those spending leaks are. Start going DEBIT and boo CREDIT Rather use your debit card and avoid your credit card when paying for your purchases. Tuck your credit card away and get into the habit of not using or needing it. Use financial phone apps to your advantage Phone apps are still a thing these days and the following apps are rated as the best free money-saving apps (that you can use daily): Spending Tracker, 22Seven, JamJar, Unsplurge, FillApp or Fuel Log3, Money Mammals Save for a goal (ideal for kids) Save for those emergencies Save for emergencies by having a proper monthly budget in place (R800 to R1000 per person in your household). Set an emergency savings goal amount for each month, starting with a small amount at first and then increase it throughout the year. Before you get lost in debt - ask the pros… Don’t be ashamed of getting the financial help you need. Ask your financial advisor or your banker for assistance and get your finances on the right track. Debt review is a scary word for some but in the end, if you are really stuck, allow yourself some breathing room and protection. Source: www.zeeva.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

My son-in-law is the manager of the remedial gym and we have donated goods and also bought items from their shop. I encourage people to visit the shop; one can really find some bargains. Thanks for the inspiring article. Thank you for the two movie tickets; it will be a nice outing. Your magazine has helped us with jumping castles and parties, as well as craft ideas for my five grandchildren. The recipes are also yummy! Keep up the good work your team is simply awesome. Suzette van den Dool. • I Love your magazine! I came across it a few years ago, being a young and new mum at the time and your magazine really helped me realise that being a mum is different for everyone and that I don’t have to be perfect to be a great mum. Deep Blue Fish Co
Deep Blue Fish Co Deep Blue Fish Co. was founded in May 2017 by local brothers Sean and Greg Woodcock, who decided to combine their serious passion for fish and food to create the go-to place for daily fresh fish, frozen seafood, sushi and of course the BEST takeaway in town.
Deep Blue Fish Co and we had a fantastic meal! We tried almost everything on the menu - the calamari and deep fried Mars Bars were firm favourites – although the sushi and hake and fish cakes were also to die for! Victoria said that it was the best battered fish that she had ever had!
The whole menu is addictively tasty and the clean, modern environment couldn’t be more appealing. Pop in and get an unforgettable taste of the sea at Deep Blue Fish Co.
The Deep Blue Fish Co sources the freshest product from local commercial fisherman along the Kwa-Zulu Natal Coast; ensuring sustainable fishing practices are met while being able to offer you the freshest in seafood.
Their filleted hake comes either fried in their traditional beer batter or grilled with lemon garlic butter. Tender Falklands calamari are processed in the shop and cooked to perfection. Enjoy lightly dusted and fried or grilled with lemon garlic butter. More favourites are their home-made fish cakes, jalapeño poppers or deep fried Mars Bars for those with a sweet tooth.
A variety of pre-cut fresh fillets are available in their fridges for purchase or to add to your Take Away order. They will clean and prepare your fish at the shop, and the chefs also offer the service of cooking your fish on request.

Healthy Life
Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day
Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day is on 16 February and the New Year is a good time to reflect on your physical and mental health and get the help you may need. Not all people find it delightful to return to work in ‘Januworry’ after the festive period and for some it might even be nerve-wracking. New deadlines, economic stressors, overspending during the holidays, etc. all contribute towards feelings of anxiety and depression. If you are one of those people who suffer from an anxiety disorder, you are not alone. Depression and anxiety disorders have major cost implications to the economy.
When to seek help Seek help if you suffer from more than three of the following symptoms: • Excessive anxiety and worry for a large portion of the day • Difficulty controlling worry • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank • Restlessness or feeling on edge • Being easily fatigued • Being irritable • Muscle tension • Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying
asleep, or restless unsatisfying sleep) • The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, work or other important areas of functioning • Financial stress requiring debt counselling Life Mental Health is a leading provider of mental health services in South Africa at nine dedicated facilities across four provinces. The mental healthcare services offered at these dedicated facilities include general psychiatry, treatment for substance dependence or other addictions associated with psychiatric disorders. Treatments offered include evidence-based drug therapy, individual psychiatric consultations and psychotherapy, group therapy and, where needed, physical therapy. If you or someone you know is experiencing mental health problems or needs urgent support, contact Life St Joseph’s on 031 204 1470.

Allergies The prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases are increasing worldwide, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Globally, 300 million people suffer from asthma and about 200 to 250 million people suffer from food allergies. One tenth of the population suffers from drug allergies, and 400 million from rhinitis. So, what is an allergy? An allergy occurs when your immune system is sensitive to, and therefore reacts on exposure to a foreign substance.
Why see an Allergist when I can see my GP? Because medicine is a science, things are constantly and rapidly changing. The diagnosis and management of allergies have changed completely in the last decade, and new forms of therapy are available. A person with food allergy, hayfever, urticaria, or even asthma no longer has to live with a poor quality of life, as was previously believed.

Pregnancy Awareness Week
Pregnancy Awareness Week is observed from 12 to 16 February. The primary purpose of Pregnancy Awareness Week is to reduce the number of deaths or complications from pregnancy. This includes both the mother and the foetus/baby. The event does so by strengthening the education on pregnancy and highlighting important issues that promote a healthy pregnancy and safe motherhood. The government suggests that pregnant women should start attending antenatal care as soon as they confirm they are pregnant; within the first trimester. The reason antenatal care is important is because it provides the following benefits: • The opportunity to treat existing medical conditions that can be aggravated by pregnancy like diabetes, hypertension, anaemia and infections. • Free testing and voluntary counselling for HIV. • Early recognition of danger signs in pregnancy and post-delivery. • Preparation for birth and readiness for complications. • Self-care which includes nutrition and high standard

The main goal of the event is to spread important information regarding pregnancy including tips on how to have a healthy pregnancy, how to prevent complications and many more. of hygiene. • Information on the father’s role and the family’s as well. Pregnancy Awareness Week also gives importance to the rights of pregnant women which include the following: • The right of a woman to choose her companion for providing support during pregnancy and childbirth. The companion will also accompany her to the antenatal care clinic as well as during labour. • The right of the woman to be treated with respect, dignity and confidentiality. • The right of the woman to ask questions and to get the right explanation regarding her condition.

World Cancer Day
World Cancer Day takes place each year on 4 February, providing the platform for the world to unite and raise the profile of cancer in a positive and inspiring way. CANSA is encouraging everyone in all cities and towns around the country to take part and support the third year of the World Cancer Day campaign, and live the slogan of ‘We can. I can.’ In 2018, the aim is to inspire healthy cities and communities to fight cancer. “We recognise the vital role that schools, libraries, health clinics, service groups, sports clubs and education professionals play in promoting and educating the next generation about their health and wellbeing. World Cancer Day is an opportunity for teachers, librarians, students, health practitioners and parents to learn more, raise awareness, take action and engage in this critically important health issue. We invite communities across the world on 4 February to support the forward progress in
the fight against cancer,” says Elize Joubert, CANSA’s CEO. Why World Cancer Day is important Currently, 8.8 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years). World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action. World Cancer Day’s primary objective is to get as many people as possible around the globe to talk about cancer on 4 February. To find events in your area that you can support, visit www.cansa.org.za/ world-cancer-day-we-can-i-can-make-adifference/ or visit www.worldcancerday. org for more information.

Breastfeeding in Public Restrooms: Is it Safe?
Women have been breastfeeding their babies for millennia, yet nursing mothers are often subject to shaming and verbal abuse if they dare to breastfeed in public. “It’s an indictment on our society that we tolerate topless models in our fashion magazines, but that breastfeeding mothers are chased out of public spaces on a daily basis,” says Stasha Jordan, breastfeeding activist and executive director of the South African Breastmilk Reserve (SABR).
“Many mothers are forced to use public bathrooms to feed their babies rather than face this kind of abuse,” says Jordan. “A public toilet is one of the most unhygienic and dangerous places to nurse your infant,” she continues. When a toilet is flushed without first closing the lid, fine droplets of excrement are sprayed into the air. These can drift around the room for up to two hours after each flush
before finally settling, invisibly, on surfaces throughout the area. These droplets carry a wide variety of pathogens, including viruses and bacteria, many of which could prove deadly to an infant’s fragile immune system. Breastfeeding at work is already protected under South African law. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) stipulates that employees with infants must be allowed two breaks of 30 minutes each, every working day, to allow for breastfeeding or expressing milk. “Breastfeeding is vital to the wellbeing of our future generations,” says Jordan. “Our responsibility is to encourage and support mothers, not to harass or shun them.” To get involved and alleviate the challenges faced by SABR, visit www.sabr.org.za or call 011 – 482 1920 or e-mail: info@sabr.org.za.

International Epilepsy Day
International Epilepsy Day is a special event which promotes awareness of epilepsy in more than 120 countries each year. Every year, on the second Monday of February, people join together to celebrate and highlight the problems faced by people with epilepsy, their families and carers. This is a day for everyone, no matter where you are, no matter how small your group or large your area, no matter whether you focus on the medical or the social aspects of the disease. Help celebrate International Epilepsy Day and let’s speak with one global voice. Epilepsy affects 1 in 100 people in South Africa. There are 50 million people living with epilepsy globally. Epilepsy is a neurological condition that is characterised by unusual electrical activity in the brain, causing unprovoked seizures. It is not a psychological disorder or illness and it is not contagious. The brain is made up of billions of nerve cells or neurons that communicate through electrical and chemical signals. When there is a sudden excessive electrical
discharge that disrupts the normal activity of the nerve cells, a seizure may result. There are quite a few misconceptions about the condition that inhibits an improved quality of life for a person with epilepsy. Some of these misconceptions are that people living with epilepsy: • Can’t excel at things that require physical or intellectual work, such as sport • Should be treated differently • Have epilepsy because someone did something wrong • Are bewitched For most people with epilepsy, the biggest problem they have to face is other people’s attitudes to epilepsy. What people with epilepsy need most is understanding and acceptance from the public. For more information contact 0860 EPILEPSY, info@epilepsy.org.za or visit www.epilepsy.org.za.

Skin SOS after the Holidays
Have you had a little bit too much of the good stuff (think food, wine, late nights, sun and surf)? Does your skin lack a little of its radiance and lustre? Don’t despair, repair! After the holiday season, the skin needs special help with the repair processes to keep it healthy and glowing. You might find that a standard facial treatment won’t necessary yield the results that you want. Speak to your skin care therapist about customising your facial treatment with an ampoule, electrotherapy or a mask. After the exfoliation process, ask for ampoules or serums that focus on skin repair. Look for products containing Vitamin C to combat sun damage and brighten the skin, Vitamin E to heal dry and eczema-prone skin, ceramides to restore the skin barrier, Massages • Tan Lab Spray Tan • Waxing / anti-oxidants such as Beta-Glucans derived Threading & Tinting Manicures & Pedicures • Luscious Lashes Eyelash Extensions from oat kernel GelPolish that •soothe the skin and • Professional Make-up • Permanent Make-up last but not least, Hyaluronic Acid to restore moisture levels in the skin. Ask your skin care therapist to add an electrotherapy treatment. There are different types of
electrical devices which produce slightly different results. Simply put, these devices utilise low electric currents that pass through the skin, aiming to penetrate product and/or tone facial muscles, giving the face a micro-lift. Lastly, incorporate a paraffin or algae mask that acts as an occlusive. The mask forms a blanket over the skin, driving the active ingredients into the skin to deeply hydrate, plump and restore. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
I read a saying once that you should listen earnestly to anything your children tell you, no matter what, because if you don’t listen to the little stuff when they are little, they won’t tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them it’s always been big stuff. In this world where there are so many dangers lurking around every corner it resounded with me, because my children wanting to and being able to share every concern with me is definitely something I hope to achieve.
of daily living when a toddler starts to assert her independence and it’s over a juice mug, tempers can flare. But it’s human nature for us to want to be in control of some aspect of our lives. We tell our children what to eat, when to eat, when to bath, what to wear, and control so many aspects of their day to day life. Let’s try to give them a little control of their colour juice mug and be understanding and see where it gets us. Aside from the smile which will brighten your day, your child will see you understanding how important the little things are to her, and one day she will hopefully share the big things with you too. And that’s something to strive for, something to make sure we swallow our impatience over, and remember that we too were small once and the colour juice mug was a big deal in our lives then too.
But this starts when they are young, and it’s hard to not sweat the small stuff. Perhaps understanding that to them it’s not so small will help us to understand next time. For example, while you may be worried about whether to take your toddler to the doctor because she’s had a snotty nose for two weeks, or if you should phone insurance to lodge a report about the tree that fell in the heavy rain this past weekend, issues that By Lisa Trollip, www.fortsandfairies.com, www.facebook.com/fortsandfairies. seem big in your life, your toddler is trying to decide if she wants the Doc McStuffins mug or the Minnie Mouse mug, issues that seem big in her life. In the same vein, her choosing what top to wear to school is a big deal to her, even if you’re running late and she’s chosen a sleeveless summer top on a cold wintery day. It’s not always easy to understand how a different juice mug can cause such an impact, especially when they are both pink after all, but just take a minute and see it from her perspective and perhaps you will understand. Ben 10 Deluxe Omnitrix
The Ben 10 Deluxe Omnitrix may look like just a cool watch and nothing more, but as all Ben 10 fans know, the Omnitrix has the power to transform Ben 10 into ten different aliens. The Deluxe Omnitrix toy was inspired by the animated series and features one hundred alien phrases and sounds. The watch has motion activation to play the alien sounds - you can press the button and turn the hourglass to summon the alien required for the situation. The toy provides lots of fun and also encourages children to use their imagination, which in a day and age of too much screen time, is ideal. Ben 10 toys are ideal for boys aged four to nine years of age and are available at toy stores and retailers. For more information, visit www.primatoys.co.za or go to www.Facebook.com/Primatoys. Picking up German is Child’s Play
As adults, learning a new language is a daunting task, however most children accomplish this with ease if they are exposed to the language regularly from a young age. This is why the Deutsche Schule Durban (DSD) now provides a toddler group (from 18 months) in addition to its established Kindergarten.
(based in Cowies Hill), there is a school bus service. Don’t miss the DSD Kindergarten open day (18 months to 4 years) on 28 February from 9am to 12pm.
The DSD is premised on the belief that multilingualism and intercultural skills are an important part of an education towards a global future. It is a small, independent primary school affiliated with ISASA. The school provides a warm, family-centred environment that makes learners and their parents feel welcome. It subscribes to a holistic view of education, using a combination of the South African and German curricula. Classes are small, allowing individual attention for learners from the very supportive teaching staff. For those not living close to the school

Developing a Growth Mindset Like Kumon, children and adults with a growth mindset believe intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort, persistence, trying different strategies and learning from mistakes. In contrast, people with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence and abilities are embedded traits; something you are born with and can’t influence. The idea that intelligence isn’t simply innate, but can be developed must be shared with children and parents. Professor Carol Dweck (a world leading researcher on mindset) said, “If they struggle with maths, children can quickly decide it’s not for them. We tell them that we can all develop the brain connections we need. It is important that they know that they can do anything, as the belief you hold in your own head really changes how your brain works… we now know that when you make mistakes in maths, your brain grows, whereas when you get all the answers right,
it doesn’t have the same growth.” (www. bbc.co.uk/programmes/b062jsn7) Developing a growth mindset is a fundamental aspect of Kumon, especially for students who are starting to study unfamiliar work. Kumon doesn’t place value on ‘correct/incorrect’, but they focus on the process the student takes to reach the answer, giving opportunities to children to develop grit and resilience. They try and understand what is happening in the students’ heart and brain while they are solving problems, as these two areas have a profound impact on their result or output. By rebranding challenges and making mistakes, it is very possible to help children (and their parents) to see their own development in an entirely different light. Source: www.kumon.co.za.

Back to School: Dealing with First Term Jitters
Dissolve those first term jitters fast and ensure your child is emotionally ready for school and adapts well to his/her new routine with top tips by creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush. The first bell of 2018 academic year has rung and first term jitters are still a real thing for some kids, especially those who have entered the classroom for the very first time. Kids sometimes find it daunting and stressful to adapt. “And parents the world over agree, when kids are fretful and uneasy, mom and dad are too,” she says. Here’s what Bush advises to help kids cope better.

Marketing Executive at GetBucks, offers Stress that their pocket money is for things some valuable tips to help parents teach that they want, and that you, Mom or Dad, their kids the value of money. will buy them what they need. Teach the idea of ‘value’. Have fun doing it! Helping young children understand that certain things require money to have and that they hold value, is a vital step in the financial rearing process. Use games to help them learn. Be creative and have some fun. Give them a money purse with a few coins and let them take it along to the shops. If they would like to buy something, count their coins with them and tell them whether they have enough to get what they want – they will learn that some things require more coins than others. Teach the idea of ‘want’ versus ‘need’. Help them choose. Speak honestly about money. Have conversations about their choices and help
Teach the idea of ‘saving’. There is no better lesson to learn. Teaching kids to save for a better or more expensive item is one of the most important financial lessons you can teach them. A child who willingly rejects the choice of instant gratification for a better item they can buy after saving for a while, is a child well on their way to becoming a fully-functional financial adult. Always try to do your best to empower your kids to be financially smart – it is the best life-long gift you can give your child. Source: www.MyBucks.com.

Parenting and Resilience
Resilience is central to one’s capacity to cope, adapt and thrive. Risk refers to variables that undermine or diminish a person’s capacity to cope, and are associated with adverse effects. Understanding what factors put children at risk for problems and, which factors protect children, strengthen their ability to cope and develop competence and resilience is key. Human relationships have the power to propel children on pathways to problematic or positive life outcomes. The parent-child relationship is the most important in the life of a child. For optimum development (intellectually, socially, emotionally and morally), a child requires a strong emotional attachment to a significant adult who is irrationally committed to their well-being.Effective parenting supports and improves the well-being and optimum development of the child. The quality of the parent-child relationship correlates to the development of the child. The child’s development will be enhanced if the relationship with parents is characterised
by positive emotional attachment, warmth, closeness and involvement. Parenting guidelines • Connect with your child. Spend quality time with them and create opportunities for fun; experience joy together. • Consistency. Be consistent with boundaries and discipline – establish routines and family rituals. • Communicate. Check-in with your child in ways that are meaningful to them, give positive messages and listen to each other. Respond to your child and empathise with them; understand and respect their needs and wishes. • Choices. Discipline with reasonable choices. The aim is to reduce potential conflict and to empower your child; develop confidence and problem-solving skills. • Consequences should be natural and fitting for the situation. See consequences as setting a healthy limit and not as a punishment. By Lisa Jane Fowler, Educational Psychologist, www.lisajanefowler.co.za.

Valentine’s Day the Posh Way Golden beaches, lush tropical gardens, or a breath-taking backdrop of majestic mountains... In KZN we are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to outdoor venues. But a posh picnic setup will turn any venue into a Valentine’s Day to remember. • Start with a personalised invitation: A romantic note, delivered to your Valentine, with a beautifully packaged miniature version of their favourite beverage. A mini G&T complete with personalised tumbler, or perhaps a bottle of bubbly. • At your chosen venue, create a beautiful entrance to the picnic area. A pathway lined with photos and candles is a simple, understated gesture. Create a trail of favourite flowers for them to follow. • At the end of the pathway setup a soft faux-fur throw and cushions. Surround the seating area with a variety of candles in glass cylinders. Incorporate your Valentine’s favourite colour as part of your chosen theme, or opt for a neutral palette with touches of colour for a chic finish. • Prepare a tray with your choice of drinks, an ice bucket with some petals, and beautiful crystal glassware. Pack your favourite snacks in a large picnic basket. (Canapes provide elegant eats that are easy to enjoy without a fuss.) • A sprinkle of rose petals over the setup, and voila! All that’s left is to pop the bubbly and enjoy a perfect Valentine’s picnic. Source: Posh Events, natasha@poshevents.co.za, 076 985 0438, www.poshevents.co.za.
