Cover Stars
Meet the Cover Stars Our cover stars this month are Don and Milly Dinnematin with their daughter, Gia, who is 18 months old. The family lives in Kloof and Don is a Digital Marketing Specialist and Dad Blogger over at ‘The Don Father’ – you may recognise his name from his articles in Mum’s Mail. At 18 months old, Gia has an extremely loving and caring nature. She is also very strong willed and knows exactly what she wants. She loves animals and being outdoors. As a family they love spending time outdoors, be it a walk in the neighbourhood or simply playing in the garden.
Samantha Baldwin
“For me, being a father is the greatest joy. It’s a joy because I have witnessed the birth of my baby girl, seen her take her first steps and heard her say “Dad” for the first time. I’m watching her grow and learn what it means to be a person in this big world, and every day she reminds me to see the world with joy and wonderment. She reminds me of the possibilities in everything around me; that the smallest details, which can so easily go unnoticed or forgotten, can become the most magical; and that every moment is precious,” says Don.
RE/MAX Panache
“Being a mom is the most incredible, life changing experience that any woman will ever go through. It is a title that I cherish and a role that fills me with so much love and care for this little life I have brought into the world,” says Milly. Don and Milly agree that there are many challenges that come with being a parent, but for them, parenting is a partnership and a conscious effort of teamwork and communication. Junk Status - What Now?
Many saw it coming and some even tried to ignore it, but unfortunately South Africa’s biggest fear has come true – RSA’s sovereign credit rating has been downgraded to junk status. Although this is devastating news for some and radical economic transformation is leaving uncertain and negative footprints for South Africans in the market as well as for foreign investors, it is not all doom and gloom says Wikus Olivier, debt management expert at DebtSafe. South Africans are tough and have shown that they are resilient in challenging times.
Although reality is hitting hard, Olivier encourages South Africans to keep their chin up and to put small, but effective measures in place by: 1. Financial planning, knowing where your spending leaks are by managing it with a proper budget. 2. Not distancing yourself from your finances, but be involved and ‘in touch’ with it.
3. Staying away from further debt by using cash instead of a credit card. 4. Cultivating a simpler lifestyle (buying only what you need and cutting on the dining out/entertainment for example). 5. Creating room for movement in your finances – you are going to need it. Otherwise the changes in the economy will eventually catch up with you. Be careful of the Prophets of Doom. It is not the end for South Africans. Stay positive, get proactive, cut out expenses where you can and know that there will be better days ahead. If, however you are already finding yourself in financial despair and staring uncontrollable debt in the face, contact DebtSafe to guide and assist you with their effective debt management programme. Pet Life
The Importance of Play Play is fun and play naturally promotes the well-being of dogs and cats in many ways. It is important for developing physical strength, acquiring life skills and strengthening social group cohesion. When encouraging our pets to play, we should try to find ways that mimic their natural behaviour and that keep their environmental paw-print as small as possible. Here are a few suggestions: Enjoy freedom. Experience the joy of watching your pet leap, run and prance. Releasing your pet into an open garden or field, especially after being indoors all day, is an example of locomotor play. If your garden is too small to allow your pet this freedom, allow them time off the lead on walks in a safe place. Play mates and play dates. Consider getting a companion if you have a single dog or cat at home. Alternatively, arrange play dates with a friend, or schedule regular group walks by meeting up with friends who have dogs.

PETS FOR ADOPTION
Mind games. Consider inventing ‘mind games’ that mimic some form of natural behaviour, like finding a hidden treat under a cup. These games are great for dogs and cats with conditions like arthritis that may limit movement. Nature’s freebies. Grow organic Catnip for your cat, or for a more calming effect – Valerian. Pine cones provide hours of fun for kittens; and what dog can resist chasing after a solid stick? As nature intended. Chat to your vet about using raw, meaty bones. Dogs will happily spend hours chewing ‘nature’s toothbrush’. We hope these ideas help you when encouraging your pet to play and keep them happy and healthy. By Cara Harris M.A. (UCT). Latest Craze to Hit the Market – Spritz Before You Sitz
Fresh Flush is the latest craze to hit the fragrance industry – and that sounds strange because it is not a perfume. Or is it? It’s the ‘Spray Before You Go’ toilet spray. New, unique, effective! Fresh Flush is the leading fragrance company in South Africa that develops and markets toilet sprays. Martin Pretorius and Mark Maynard, directors of Fresh Flush say: “Developed right here in South Africa, Fresh Flush has taken off with a bang! It really has surprised us. With the drought situation we are facing, you can save water by not flushing every time as odours are not a problem!” Fresh Flush – the ‘Before You Go’ toilet spray – has everybody talking and enquiries are flooding in! Unique, novel, handy, ideal for keeping bathrooms fresh and sweet smelling, it’s the ideal smell buster, so that you never have an embarrassing moment! Keep one in every bathroom and one in your handbag for when you are out and need to go!

Unlike other toilet sprays that are used after your… ahem… business is done in the bathroom, Fresh Flush is a ‘Spray Before You Sit’ spray. It just takes a couple of spritzes of Fresh Flush onto the water in the bowl to trap those stinky, clunky odours under the water! Really – why did no one think of it before?? Just Berry Plants Just Berry Plants makes it easy to grow berry plants in Kwazulu-Natal. Their farmer works together with botanists from around the world to source the healthiest berry plants, and to propagate and cultivate them so that they can grow in our tropical climate. There are a few basic requirements for all berry plants: • They need full sun for at least five to six hours per day. • They prefer morning sun, if possible. • Berry plants need good drainage as they do not like their roots to be waterlogged. • They can be planted in the ground or in a large pot; stones placed at the bottom of the hole, with the perfect soil medium – which Just Berry Plants supplies. • They do not like the soil around them to be disturbed. • Once planted any weeds growing near the plant should be hand pulled, so as not to disturb the root system. • All berry plants love mulch which helps keep the soil around them cool and protects the roots from the sun’s UV rays. • They require fertilisation in spring and summer only.
Available at Shongweni Farmers’ Market Saturdays 6.30 - 11.30am.

Noster ProBiotics
My name is Neil Jackson, a pharmacist for 30 years. I would like to introduce myself and my son, Torin, who sells Noster ProBiotics (I provide the technical support). Over the next few months I will be writing a column on probiotics, their functions, their benefits and the conditions they treat. The Forgotten Organ – the name given to the probiotics that populate our body, our gut in particular. Our Immune System is broken into two parts, inflammatory response and regulatory response. Both are important. Inflammation is essential in the beginning to mop up whatever is irritating the body. But it has to stop after it has completed its task . The body itself starts the inflammation, and the bacteria in your gut start the regulatory response. Without probiotics in your gut, you get no regulatory response and you end up with an autoimmune disease, asthma, psoriasis or eczema.
these autoimmune diseases. Torin was also a caesarean baby and in 21 years he has only had one antibiotic! He has avoided all these problems by taking a probiotic daily. A probiotic should include: • Live culture • A broad range of strains, the more the better • Colony forming – not much use if they are too easily excreted • Known beneficial strains Discount coupon: Noster ProBiotics is offering all Mum’s Mail readers a discount on their products. Depression in Children
Healthy Life
Could your child be struggling with depression? July is Mental Health Awareness Month and Elna Burger gives us some insight into depression in children – something we all need to be aware of. Our beliefs, our views of ourselves and others, our thoughts and what we value directly impacts what we focus on and how we feel. One of the fundamentals of NLP is that we are not our behaviour, but rather that our behaviour is a direct result of our focus. When our minds are occupied with negative self-talk or emotions it influences our behaviour.
Here are a few signs to look out for when you suspect depression in your child: acting out, drastic changes in behaviour, sudden isolation or seclusion, change in sleeping patterns, changes in eating habits, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, and stomach ache and headaches not responding to treatment. In extreme cases the child might talk about ending their life. True Awakenings assists clients by teaching them to understand themselves and others, how to release unwarranted and inappropriate negative emotions, how to prevent and reject unwanted thoughts and negative self-talk, strategies to change their Depression is defined as a persistent emotional state, removing limiting beliefs extreme feeling of hopelessness, sadness and equip them with tools that increase and lack of self-esteem and confidence self-esteem and confidence. which debilitates the individual from doing the normal daily tasks and activities. MopTails Cloth Nappies MopTails Cloth Nappies, developed by MopTop Kids, is a proudly South African product that was created to alleviate poverty. Why use cloth nappies? • Cloth nappies are better for the environment – they are re-usable, and the impact on landfill sites is lessened. • Washing the pads is really simple and they are quick drying, using less electricity, water and washing powder. • Cloth nappies are healthy for babies – you don’t need expensive bum creams to protect baby from harmful plastics. There is also less chance of baby developing fungal infections as the nappies are breathable and cool. • They are designed for durability and are very easy to use and cost effective. Retail A small amount of stock is sold to retail stores. These nappies are produced by small home operated CMT shops. They are labelled and packaged appealingly for stores, chemists and ante-natal sisters. There are five ranges of prints to choose from that will change regularly. NGO This part of the business is aimed at building previously disadvantaged individuals into small self-employed entities. The MopTop mission is to help build people who have the ability to sew, own a sewing machine, and want to build markets to sell their products. The nappy project would be ongoing and will need an individual who is willing to educate the local women about using modern cloth nappies. The vision is that companies, NGOs and individuals will take up the opportunity to sponsor the training of capable ladies from the informal sectors. To live and Let (your child) Live
Raising the next generation is no easy feat. You may be practising strict rules at home when it comes to the use of tech devices, but the fact remains that technology has made our lives easier. But how do you equip your child with the skills needed to survive in the 21st century? It’s simple and starts with you. As his first point of reference, your child will see the world through your eyes, and ultimately learn to understand how it functions. When your child enters primary school, if you haven’t already given in to your child’s request for a tablet, his stationary list at school will stipulate access to a mobile phone and the internet. Technological advancement is both a blessing and a curse. Yes, exchanging (homework-related) WhatsApp messages with his teachers and classmates can help your child resolve a problem, but at the same time, you will nurture laziness and apathy.

A child will draw his confidence and strength from his home base, and unconditional love. It’s hard enough living in an ever-changing, fast-paced world where expectations are high and the competition is even higher. So open your arms (literally), and lend a sympathetic ear. Although next time you pass the electronics aisle, stand your ground. Your child won’t thank you for it, but you know that you’ve made the right decision – for now, at least.

Science Experiment: Mixing Oil and Water
PRE-SCHOOL AND BABY CARE
Some things just don’t get along well with each other. Take oil and water as an example; you can mix them together and shake as hard as you like but they’ll never become friends… or will they? What you’ll need: • Small soft drink bottle • Water • Food colouring • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil • Dish washing liquid Instructions: Add a few drops of food colouring to the water. Pour about two tablespoons of the coloured water, along with the two tablespoons of cooking oil, into the small soft drink bottle. Screw the lid on tight and shake the bottle as hard as you can. Put the bottle back down and have a look, it may have seemed as though the liquids were mixing together but the oil will float back to the top. What’s happening? While water often mixes with other liquids to form solutions, oil and water do not. Water molecules are strongly attracted to each other; this is the same for oil - because they are more attracted to their own molecules they just don’t mix together. They separate and the oil floats above the water because it has a lower density. If you really think oil and water belong together then try adding some dish washing liquid or detergent. Detergent is attracted to both water and oil, helping them all join together and form something called an emulsion.

Birthday Party Hacks Throwing a birthday party for your kiddo can be stressful – there are a ton of kids running around all at once, and you have to worry about feeding and entertaining them. To make things run a little bit smoother during your child’s next birthday party, here are some mom hacks that are perfect for parties. Cake mix + can of soda = most delicious cake ever. Instead of the egg, oil, and water that usually get added to premade cake mixes, use a can of soda and prepare your kids for the moistest and fluffiest cake they’ve ever eaten. Sprite goes well with vanilla, and Coca-Cola goes well with chocolate. Don’t forget to floss. If you’re cutting into a fairly soft cake, slice it perfectly straight across with unflavoured dental floss – this also works with other soft solids. Then you
don’t have to worry about a sharp knife in a room full of kiddos. Make kid-size cupcake kebabs. Using a mini cookie cutter, cut out pieces of cake, lightly frost, and slide onto a kebab stick. If you’re topping with sprinkles, punch a cupcake liner onto the bottom of the kebab to catch all of the sprinkles. Re-scoop ice cream the night before. The night before the party, line a muffin tin with cupcake papers and drop scoops of ice cream in each one. Throw the tin in your freezer, then bring out the individual scoops when the cake comes out so they’re ready to grab and you don’t need to wrestle with the scooper.

Sweet 16 Party Games If a DJ isn’t in your plans, there are still plenty of sweet sixteen games that you can play with your guests. Here are some ideas for sweet sixteen party games to make your birthday bash the most memorable event of the year! Lie Detector For this sweet sixteen party game, pass out a piece of paper and pen to each of your guests. Have them write down three facts on the paper. Two of the facts must be truthful and one of the facts must be a lie. The lie can be as silly, outrageous, or as believable as you want it to be. Then, go around the group and have each person read off their facts. The rest of the group must then try and guess which of their facts is the lie! This is a great game to play prior to any of the other activities because it lightens the mood and gets everyone talking and laughing.
Karaoke Rent a karaoke machine for guests to show off their singing and/or lip syncing skills. Some great songs to play are Sixteen Candles by Jackson 5, Happy Birthday by Stevie Wonder and Sweet Sixteen by Beyoncé. Of course, you can also have songs by your favourite performers. Balloon Truth or Dare Before the party starts, write out 10 truth questions and 10 dares each on small index cards. Carefully place the card inside each balloon and then blow them up. During the party, each guest can take a turn popping a balloon and either answering a truth question or completing the dare.

Rain in a Cup Supplies needed: • Clear plastic/glass cup • Water • Shaving cream • Food colouring

R264!
The Experiment: Fill the cup three-quarters full with cold water. Spray shaving cream on top, covering the water completely with a layer of shaving cream. Add a few drops of food colouring to the top and watch. The Outcome: The food colouring will rain down through the shaving cream into the water. The food colouring will not disperse right away into the water. Why it worked: In this experiment, the shaving cream represents clouds, the water represents air and the food colouring represents precipitation. As the food colouring “precipitation” saturates the shaving cream “cloud”, it becomes heavy.

MINI TOWN
When the “cloud” can no longer hold it, the food colouring “rains” down through the water, like rain falls down through the air. The molecules in the cold water move slowly, so it takes longer for the food colouring to spread through the water.

Variation: Try this experiment with warm and even hot water. Does the temperature of the water effect the outcome? Did you know? On other moons and planets, rain is made of sulfuric acid or methane. On a planet 5 000 light-years away, scientists found raindrops made of iron rather than water. Some scientists say it might even rain diamonds on Jupiter!

Frog Cupcakes
Birthday Pamper Parties!
These cupcakes are easy to make and are ideal for a girl’s or boy’s party! Ingredients: • 1 (500g) package white cake mix • Vanilla icing (450g) • 6 drops of green food colouring, as needed • ¼ cup green decorator sugar • 12 large marshmallows • 48 semisweet chocolate chips • 1 drop red food colouring
• Nail Art • Manis • Pedis • Make–Up • Mini Facials Only R100pp. Travel fee will apply
Michelle 083 785 6044
beautyinmotion@eca.co.za
Method: Bake cupcakes according to the directions on the package. Allow them to cool completely. Scoop 2/3 of the frosting into a small bowl and mix with green food colouring. Ice the cupcakes. Sprinkle some of the green sugar over the tops. Cut the marshmallows in half to make two circles. Dip half of each marshmallow piece into water and dip into the green sugar to make the eyelids. The remaining white will be the eyes. Place on the cupcakes. Use a little bit of white icing to glue a chocolate chip into the centre of each eye for the pupil. Mix the remaining frosting with red food colouring to make pink. Use the pink icing to draw smiling mouths and nostrils or even tongues on the frogs. The kids will love helping you make these! You could even get the kids to decorate these cupcakes as a party activity. Prepare the cupcakes and icing in advance, and then get the kids to decorate them at the party.
