North Durban Market Leaders!

Our cool cover star this month is Jody Nikelo Shabalala. He lives with his mom, Busi Shabalala, in Umhlanga. Busi is a magistrate.

Jody is a huge car fanatic, just like his dad and has a huge collection of Hot Wheels cars – he has collected over 100 Hot Wheels cars and is now starting a Bruder collection! He loves singing and watching YouTube – that’s where he gets information on the latest cars. He can identify a lot of car brands on the road, says his mom and he also enjoys playing with his Nerf guns.

“I love learning and seeing the world through our children’s eyes,” says Busi. Busi’s advice to new parents – “Don’t worry about being the best parent ’cause you already are!”

Smart Storage for a Beautiful Family Home Durban North’s Cairey Baxter-Bruce is a mom of two and show director of the ECR House & Garden Show. Cairey understands that an uncluttered space is a must for any mom. Using her years of experience, personal expertise and advice from industry-leaders, Cairey shares her top tips to help ensure that kids’ little knick-knacks are not the recipe for décor disaster. • Educate your children on allocated storage spaces from a young age. Make sure there are neat boxes or compartments in reachable places for everything. This is also an opportunity for children to learn about tidying up after themselves. • On trend right now are beautiful fabric, woven baskets and wire crates that go with just about any colour scheme or décor style – perfect for storing toys, stationery and clutter. • Look for chalkboard stickers that can be placed on the front of storage boxes and containers. These types of stickers look good and are very practical, particularly as your child grows (and these boxes are used for other things), they can be remarked. • Hooks, shelves and rods behind closed doors are a must for any mom. Not only does it allow for neat, hidden away storage spaces, but it also makes things easier to find. • As your children grow out of their games and toys, ask them to assist you in deciding what they no longer use or want to play with. Assign a basket in your home, where these toys, and other things they have grown out of, can be placed and stored until full enough to be donated to a children’s home, school or local charity. Anxiety and Panic Disorders

We all know what it feels like to be nervous and anxious – the butterflies in the stomach feeling before a date, or the way your heart beats fast and hard when you get a fright or are in danger. Anxiety can help us cope, but for people with an anxiety disorder, this emotion can be disabling if it is there all the time. Panic attacks involve short periods of terrifying fear, along with many physical symptoms: • In the beginning, the first panic attack seems to come from nowhere while a person is doing some everyday activity like driving, sitting at work, or shopping. • Sense of being very scared, frightened or terrorised • Rapid and noisy heartbeat • Difficulty breathing and or chest pains • Dizziness, light-headedness, feeling sick • Tingling or no feeling in the hands • Hot flushes or shivering • Sense of not being right, fear of losing control, going “crazy” or doing something embarrassing, or a fear of dying.

Coping with panic attacks Remember that although your feelings and symptoms are very frightening, they are not dangerous or harmful. The more you are willing to deal with them, the less frightening they will become. Treatment can help most people who have this illness. It is very important to get information about the problem, and the type of treatments that are able to help. Life St Joseph’s is equipped with a multidisciplinary team and tranquil environment specifically suited to treating patients suffering from depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders and many others. Life St Joseph’s also offers a dedicated adolescent programme. Mental Health Awareness Month

July is Mental Health Awareness Month. A large portion of the South African population suffers from mental illnesses, and the majority of them won’t receive treatment. Mental illnesses are real and have a significant negative social and economic impact on South African society. The aim of Mental Health Awareness Month is to educate the public about the realities of mental health conditions and to reduce stigma around seeking support or identifying as a person with a mental health concern.

Baby’s First Animals This cute board picture book aimed at toddlers is bright and full of realistic animal pictures, with exciting pull tabs on the side to capture your toddler’s attention. It’s a beautiful way to teach animal names, sounds and family groups. The board book is sturdy enough to ensure many hours of page turning and tab pulling. It’s perfect for keeping my bear cub busy. This book was entertaining and educational and I love the bright backgrounds and realistic animals. Bear especially loved being able to pull out the sturdy card lever and discover the hidden animal on each side.

Building Confidence in our Little People

Confidence – is it nature or nurture? If I were to base my decision on looking at my sevenyear-old versus my five-year-old, I would say nature. However, my life experience tells me it is a bit of both. As if our jobs as parents aren’t challenging enough, it is up to us and our community to build up the confidence in our children. I can clearly remember the moment that happened for me as a teenager. We were at a family function dancing in a circle, when a family member pushed me into the centre of the circle. Their reaction to my dancing was so encouraging that that defining moment not only started my love affair with dancing but also changed the way I looked at myself. The Key to Confidence: • Believe in yourself unconditionally, because only you truly know your full potential. • Be true to yourself and realise that you are human and bound to make mistakes which you will learn from. • Acknowledge and celebrate your successes. Use positive affirmations. “I

can do it!”, and “I feel terrific!” • Know that you can’t control the thoughts and actions of others but you can control how you choose to interpret them. Offence can only be taken; not given - when you accept your “true” worth… it can’t be taken. • Think positively and surround yourself with positive people. Other essential elements to ensure confidence are: • Great communication skills • Understanding your audience • Dressing for confidence • Making a great first impression. Flourish Image Consulting hold workshops once a month for adolescents and teenagers (10 to 18 years old) where they focus on confidence-building skills. Contact: trisha@flourishimage.co.za or visit their Facebook page: Flourish Fitness and Image Consulting.

Help! My Child is in the Wrong Crowd “We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them in mutual weirdness and call it ‘friendship’.” This quote from Dr Seuss beautifully illustrates our inherent need to connect with others who make us feel valued and accepted. Cindy Glass, Director and Cofounder of Step Up Education Centres says; “The need for human connection sees many young people getting involved in friendships which are not good for them. The ‘wrong crowd’ friendships are those relationships which do not uphold positive behavioural choices and who are consistently seeking ways in which to harm others or engage in self-destructive activities.” Cindy goes on to add; “All negative behaviours stem from fears rooted in negative self-belief. We cannot control the behavioural choices of others but we can do something to assist our children in making better friendship choices.” Consider these helpful hints: Be the person you wish to see in your child. Teach your child about positive friendship choices by having positive friendships in your life. Let go of toxic relationships - it takes courage but you will give your child the courage to do the same. • Foster communication channels with your child that are based on trust and nonjudgemental support and love. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if your imperfect child could feel safe enough to speak of his imperfectness to his imperfect parent, knowing that, together, you will find positive solutions? • Help your child develop a strong sense of self-value. This will give him the courage to stand firm in his convictions and be able to say ‘no’ to negative peer pressure. He will not have anything that needs proving because he will know who he is! • Teach your child about consequences. All choices have consequences and nobody can escape this! • Teach your child to honour and respect himself, just as you honour and respect yourself. In this way, your child will not have www.mumsmail.com

a need to become involved in destructive relationships. • Find ways for your child to enjoy activities beyond the school environment. Hiking, dancing, art, music and so many other activities will keep your child from becoming bored and tempted into negative groups and it has the added benefit of learning new skills and developing confidence! • Dream big! Remind your child of the possibilities that lie ahead for him/her! Having something to work towards is a wonderful way to stay out of trouble despite negative peer pressures! “‘You cannot force a change in friendships but you can help your child develop a better sense of self. Children who respect, honour and appreciates who they are, are less likely to seek connection with those who do not mirror their values,” concludes Cindy. Archaeology Dig with Super Soft Dough Searching for treasures is a basic human desire. The delight of discovery is real, whether it be prehistoric bones on an archaeological dig or a plastic toy buried in playdough.

Typically you need about half a cup of conditioner to 1 cup of corn starch. If it is too sticky, add more corn starch – if it is crumbly, add more conditioner.

Materials (to make one dig site): • Medium bowl • ½ cup (120ml) leftover hair conditioner • 1 cup corn starch • Glitter and food colouring (optional) • Baking dish • Little toys (e.g. dinosaurs) • Archaeology tools (coffee stirrers, toothpicks and/or spoons) In a medium bowl, mix the conditioner and corn starch together until it is the consistency of playdough. The amounts vary depending on the type of conditioner.

Half the fun is mixing the ingredients. Add glitter for extra sparkle or food colouring (optional). Store in an airtight bag. Add small amounts of conditioner or oil to the dough after it has been stored to rehydrate the dough before playing with it. Layer the bottom of a baking dish with your dinos. Press the soft dough over the tops of your toys. Try to extricate the toys, leaving as little remaining dough on the items, using tools found in your kitchen.
