Factory Shopping Tips

As I mentioned last month, Durban is spoilt for choice when it comes to factory shops, but it’s not only in Durban and surrounds that you will find factory shops. Often, it is in the most unlikely of places that you will stumble upon a great find. For instance, if you amble along the Midlands Meander, you will find some cool and quirky factory shops with some amazing gems! Sometimes you need to travel further afield to find something unique. Whether you’re shopping local or travelling further afield, here are some handy tips for factory shopping: Wear comfortable shoes. This is a must – I have learnt from experience! If you are going on a major spree, you could be traipsing the streets

for hours on end and there is nothing worse than having sore feet! Also, wear comfortable clothes and wear layers – if you get hot you can peel off the layers as you go.

| Factory Shop Feature If you are going to food factory shops, make sure you travel with a cooler bag/box in your car, so that if you buy any frozen or cold products, they will stay fresh in your car for the duration of your shopping trip.

Don’t take your kids! This might seem like a strange tip, but I know from experience that kids don’t like being dragged around from pillar to post. They become tired and whiny and you will end up having to cut your shopping spree short! Do it while they are at school or leave them with granny or a sitter.

Check for flaws. Look for holes by holding the garment up to the light. Often holes are found on items that have the label removed or cut through, Most of all - have fun! You can find some great or there will be a coloured sticker where the hole deals at factory shops, so go ahead and spoil is. yourself this month!

By Sarah Mackintosh. Plan your route. Know in advance which factory shops you want to visit, and plan the Factory shop – open to the public route so you visit them in a logical order, instead of driving all over town haphazardly and retracing steps. This will save you time and petrol! Don’t carry a handbag. If you are going to isolated or industrial areas and are worried about theft, it’s best not to carry a handbag. Rather keep your debit card in your pocket or carry a small keyring purse with a zipper that you can conceal in your hand.

Many depressed adolescents choose to sleep as a means to avoid dealing with painful situations. Concentration difficulties and a change in academic performance could also be indicators of depression. Adolescents may report not being able to concentrate because their thoughts are occupied by the painful or problematic situation. They are left feeling more overwhelmed and powerless. adolescents may be more prone to ‘self-medicate’ as an attempt to treat depressive symptoms. This may be done by adopting unhealthy coping mechanisms such as consuming alcohol, using other substances or adopting other addictive and/or self-harming behaviours. What you can do as a parent:

Your availability is important as it assists in keeping communication open when it may be most needed.

Validation of feelings: Adolescents often report feeling more depressed and lonelier because they are misunderstood. This in itself reinforces isolation and further withdrawal from society. It is important to take the time to listen and understand what your adolescent is feeling. Supporting your adolescent does not mean you have to fix the problem, but rather that you notice and understand the pain and sadness they are experiencing. Encourage contribution: Volunteering is a powerful mechanism to challenge depressive thoughts. Contributing to society creates purpose and meaning in day to day activities and can also assist in boosting self-esteem. As a parent, you could join them, creating an opportunity to improve your relationship and communication.

Be mindful: It is essential to ‘check in’ with ourselves frequently, noticing and identifying our feelings, both pleasant and unpleasant. Sensory Behaviour in Children

Many children have come to me for support for an array of behaviours. Over time, I have noticed that often below the surface of these behaviours are dysregulated sensory systems. This sensory root cause of behaviour is often overlooked as it is very difficult to see cause and effect in sensory behaviour and by the time behaviour manifests, it is largely a result of sensory under/overload. Sensory behaviour is often masked by the children at school and many times even teachers are unaware. Parents are often flummoxed by their children’s huge or inappropriate response - a simple request or instruction can lead to a pool of tears or fit of anger. Sensory children often feel very overwhelmed and out of control; they thrive on routine and ritual and are often completely thrown by a change in routine or expectation. Some sensory children have specific spots for specific toys and get quite upset when their things are out of place. It’s all about control for them as they are trying to regain a sense of control in their environment.

for example, they may not like having certain texture foods mixed together or even on the same plate.

“Sensory children often love deep pressure hugs, massages and deep muscle work...” Sensory behaviour may defensive or seeking. For example, some children will avoid certain textures (defensive) or some children may seek out certain textures - even rough ones such as sequins (seeking). Some are auditory defensive; often covering their ears to certain volumes or pitches of sounds and other times are auditory seeking - especially if the noise is their choice and volume they may sing, whistle or make noises as they work or play. Sensory children often love deep pressure hugs, massages and deep muscle work such as pushing and pulling. They are often the first on the trampoline

Mouths are very sensitive and sensory children often use their mouths to regulate by chewing, sucking or blowing. They may bite their nails, grind their teeth, and suck their thumbs, battle to lose a dummy /bottle or often have their shirts in their mouths. They may be very picky eaters, www.mumsmail.com

or swings. Some sensory children feel car sick when they travel. Over time, sensory input accumulates and if it is not consistently regulated, the child feels dysregulated and an inappropriate response manifests as a release to this sensory build-up. There is help for children and parents of sensory children. Both OT and counselling involving play/ art/narrative intervention are recommended for sensory children. This will help them grow in their emotional intelligence and feel more regulated while learning all about their sensory self. The ultimate goal is to teach self-regulation. There are many sensory trained occupational therapists working in most schools. These therapies often complement each other beautifully. Brain Health Takes Centre Stage Brain health is set to take centre stage in 2019 with research showing that nutrition, sleep and stress management are among the most important factors influencing mental wellness.

Health expert, Vanessa Ascencao, says there’s an increasing global focus on brain health while an informal survey of popular health books shows that those on mental health are now more popular than books on diet and exercise. Nutrition, stress and sleep play a major role in mental health. Research shows that one in three adults don’t get enough sleep and Ascencao says disrupted sleep or getting less than seven hours a day may contribute to mental distress,

depression and anxiety. Lack of sleep is also associated with cardiovascular risk and obesity. Additionally, a balanced diet, effective stress management and high-quality supplements are important for brain health and general wellness, adds Ascencao.

Ascencao’s top health tips: • Be mindful about what you put into and how you treat your body • Aim to eat whole, natural foods such as fruits and vegetables and drink lots of

water • Try to get eight hours of solid uninterrupted sleep a night. This will impact positively on your wellbeing • Identify stress triggers and avoid them. • Be mindful of where you focus your thoughts and energy • Keep moving. A sedentary lifestyle may lead to weight gain and negative thoughts • Avoid processed foods and sugar-laden drinks • Consult a nutritionist about a good supplement regime

Mooimaak Makeovers: A bubbly woman with a flair for fashion, Coreen Cronje had wasted 15 years in an abusive relationship and was finally ready to get in touch with her “old self”. Fortunately, as Coreen participated in Mooimaak, kykNET’s popular makeover show, the Skin Renewal team - lead by Dr Dalize Willemse and therapist Zaan Pienaar - could help her do it.

Plump up the volume! Coreen’s severe volume loss was an easy fix thanks to a variety of injectable fillers. These have an instant plumping effect An amazing laser A CO2 and, if strategically placed, can laser removes the outer layers even lift the skin in the lower of dead, damaged skin and parts of the face. “I walked out encourages fresh, new collagen with cheeks in the right place, to grow. It’s a great way to no more lines on my jaw, a chin, target severe sun damage and kissable lips and the angry deep wrinkles so they applied frown was gone!” says Coreen.

New threads The team lifted Coreen’s face and neck further by injecting dissolvable sutures known as PDO anchor threads just below the surface of her skin in strategic places. After a couple of months, the threads will dissolve, but as they encourage a collagen scaffolding to grow in the area they were placed, her new look will linger much longer. Naturally, Coreen is delighted. “I’ve found the will to live life to the fullest and discovered confidence in myself again.” Visit Skin Renewal at www.skinrenewal.co.za or contact 0861 SKIN SA.

Start Your Child on the Coding Path

There is a lot of talk in South Africa about the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the need for education in the country to start preparing learners for the future world of work from a young age. some apps to their mobile devices which will use games to kick off the coding thought processes. Learning to code is like learning how to speak, read and write in a different language. Children are very good at learning a variety of languages from a young age so teaching them coding will be no different,” he says. Luis says that the importance of preparing children for a technologically-enabled future cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, in South Africa, resources are often lacking and many teachers are not yet equipped to teach coding. However, this shouldn’t stop parents from encouraging their children to start with the basics of coding from a young age, an expert says. “As we teach our children to read and speak our mother

tongue language so we should start with coding at an early age,” says John Luis, Head of Academics at ADvTECH Schools, a division of South Africa’s largest private education provider. “Parents who are not tech savvy may find this daunting, so the easiest way to start the children off will be to download

Celebrating 25 Years of Learning and Leading Ocean View Montessori is a dynamic, creative, healthy and safe learning environment that promotes independence, curiosity, cooperation and fun. Respect for the individual overrides the need for competition and facilitates a harmonious and peaceful atmosphere. The Montessori Method is implemented with integrity and passion by the qualified Montessori teachers and support staff. The school has a keen focus on the creative curriculum with specialist music and drama teachers. Chess is another area of strength

with weekly lessons for the primary school. Environmental awareness forms a framework for all of our teaching and the planting of vegetables and herbs, up-cycled crafts and waste reduction are all part of the routine at Ocean View. Looking back over the past 25 years, Rose and Lucy, the principals, have so much to share. “One of our greatest pleasures is hearing from past pupils. Some now with children of their own and reflecting on their Montessori journey. The variety of careers and specialisations is fascinating; a vet, scientists, architects,

engineers, mechanics, lawyers, copywriters, teachers, IT specialists, accountants, designers, chefs, musicians, sportsmen, travellers and adventurers,” said Rose. “It is our aim to prepare the children fully for their future steps in education and life; to enable them to live happily and positively; to feel empowered to strive for excellence in the fields of their choice. Extending our school up to Grade 3 has provided an excellent way to consolidate foundation phase learning,” added Lucy. “Come and see for yourself, we would love to show you around.”

St Gerard’s ECD Centre

St Gerard’s ECD Centre turns 70 years old this year! Part of the Maris Stella Roman Catholic Trust and St Francis Xavier Parish, St Gerard’s Pre-school is steeped in history. The Roman Catholic Sisters opened the nursery school in 1949 to provide quality day care for children younger than schoolgoing age. Similar values have continued beyond expectations 70 years later. The ethos of “As the twig is shaped, so shall the tree grow”, provides a foundation for the development of children from birth to school readiness. www.mumsmail.com

Turns 70!

St Gerard’s is passionate about caring for and developing children. Their business is developing your child to the best of their ability - balancing sport, creative and academic skills. By developing your child, they believe that they are investing in the next generation. However, the development of a child is a partnership between home and school. St Gerard’s is a multicultural school, embracing all religions and celebrating differences. This in itself is enriching for any child to learn and respect other cultures. 36

To LOVE to learn is one of the most precious gifts one can give a child. Education should awaken in a child the taste for real lifelong learning experience.

The school provides a professional, well-structured, vibrant and nurturing environment to give children the very best educational start in life, which is anchored in love. Registration is open for 2020. For more information contact the school on 031 467 0107, 083 6999 589 or rachalsingh@mweb.co.za.

Make a Lighthouse

My son was recently tasked with making a lighthouse craft as a school project. We had SO much fun doing it that I decided I had to share it with you! You will need: • A strong piece of cardboard/ plywood for your base • A red plastic cup • Red, blue and yellow cardstock/paper • White paper • Black marker • Wood glue and Pritt • A battery operated tea light • A clear plastic cup • Pebbles/stones from the garden • Cotton wool • Blue and yellow paint • Blue and yellow sand/glitter/ sequins for some sparkle

4. Take your tea light and Prestik it onto the top of the lighthouse. 5. Cut a clear plastic cup in half and place it over the tea light – we just happened to have one that fitted perfectly, but you might have to improvise and cut the cup shorter or longer to make it fit properly. Use sticky tape to secure it on one side, like a hinge, so you can lift the other side up (like a lid) to turn on the tea light. Create the scene Take your cardboard/plywood base and paint a yellow beach and blue ocean. Or you can glue on blue and yellow card stock to create the sea and sand. Once it is dry, you can glue your

How to make it: We used a lot of improvisation and tried to make do with what we had at home. The only thing I had to buy for this was the tea light The Lighthouse: To make the lighthouse, I used a red plastic Coca-Cola cup, but you could really use any colour, as I ended up sticking red cardstock around it to cover up the white text on the cup. 1. Roll red cardstock around the cup to cover it and secure it in place with sticky tape. Trim the edges to match the cup. 2. Then we cut strips of white paper to glue around the lighthouse to create the red and white effect. 3. Oliver then used a black marker to draw on some windows and a door. www.mumsmail.com

completed lighthouse to the beach using wood glue. Glue some pebbles around the base of the lighthouse for rocks, and embellish the beach sand with yellow sand or real beach sand (we used yellow sand from a sand art kit we had at home). You can even glue on some sea shells, or a small piece of drift wood. We also made a tiny beach umbrella using cardstock and a toothpick to glue onto the beach (I helped with this). Then embellish the sea with blue glitter or coloured sand, and we used cotton wool and white paint to create waves on the ocean. By Sarah Mackintosh.

happy memory of the day they partied on the WILD SIDE! Here’s what parents had to say about their service: “Beyond grateful to Dean for making my child laugh until he cried! Such was the joy at experiencing so many crazy creatures up close. To say that the party was a hit for the birthday boy is an understatement! Keeping 25 six year olds engaged for an hour is NO easy task, yet they were enthralled from beginning to end. What a hit!” - Shelley McLean. “I want to say a big thank you for such a fantastic and informative show! You left the kids and adults spellbound. You made my son feel special and he loved every second of the show! I admire your passion and love for these reptiles and that clearly showed in your demonstration.” - Amy Moodley.
