Editor’s Life
The Holiday is Over! Phew, the last two months have been a complete whirlwind taking over the reins of Mum’s Mail. No more lazing around by the pool or beach for me (which I did rather a lot since arriving in August) – the books are now gathering dust and the tan has finally faded! We truly love this fabulous magazine and are so pleased to be at the helm. Enrique (13) is very sporty – he plays first team rugby for his school, he is a gold medallist in Judo and he loves soccer. He has received a sport scholarship for Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy next year. Joel (6) plays piano and has been learning to read and play piano since the age of five. He is very talented musically and enjoys playing most instruments. “Sandile is an amazing father and husband, we always do something special for him on Father’s Day – we can’t disclose what though!” laughed Nontobeko. “Being a father is a serious responsibility and there are times when I have to love my kids by saying no to their demands, needs and desires. I constantly emphasise to my kids the importance of respect for all, regardless of gender or race, and to have a soft heart. My job requires me to be away a lot, but my wife is very skilled in multi-tasking. I don’t know how she does it – looking after kids, work and business when I am not around! DUCT: Duzi Umngeni Conservation Trust In June we observe World Environment Day and World Oceans’ Day. In light of this, Mum’s Mail would like to highlight the plight of the Duzi Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT). The uMsunduzi and Umgeni River systems have become badly degraded through neglect and over exploitation. DUCT’s vision is an ecologically healthy and biologically diverse uMngeni-uMsunduzi river system that provides sustained ecological goods and services for the communities that depend on them for their survival. They envisage that communities will show respect for the rivers and will take ownership and responsibility for the condition of the rivers, seeking to preserve their natural function and beauty.

World Blood Donor Day is on 14 June – did you know your blood can save a life? When you donate platelets you give someone in need of it another laugh, another chance, another birthday, another day.

What are platelets? Platelets are small colourless cell fragments circulating in the blood. When a blood vessel is injured, the platelets collect at the site and form a plug to stop bleeding. Platelets can only be stored for five days after collection, therefore frequent donors are needed. Who requires platelet transfusions? • Patients with leukaemia and other cancers undergoing chemo or radiation therapy. • Bone marrow or organ transplant patients. • Patients undergoing major surgery/ trauma. • Patients with aplastic anaemia.
To become a platelet donor you must: • Be healthy, weigh 55kg or more, be between 16 and 65 years of age and consider your blood and blood platelets safe to give to a patient. • Not have taken Aspirin in the past seven days prior to donating. • Not have taken anti-inflammatory medication in the past three days. • Have a platelet count above 180 000 per micro-litre. Potential donors are screened to assess whether they are suitable to donate. If you meet the requirements, you will be contacted to set up an appointment to donate platelets.

Bedwetting: Nocturnal enuresis is involuntary urination that happens at night while sleeping, after the age when a child should be able to control his bladder. Normally nerves in the bladder wall send a message to the brain when the bladder is full – the brain then sends a message back to the bladder to keep it from automatically emptying until the child is ready to go to the bathroom. The problem sets in when: the body produces too much urine at night, the bladder is too small/ irritable, the child sleeps too deeply, the child has medical conditions like diabetes, infection or psychological problems. Your GP will ask for a thorough history and start with a urine analysis and finger prick glucose test. There are several treatment options, ranging from a more conservative approach of no liquids after 6pm, positive imagery and bedwetting alarms to oral medication and/ or nasal spray. Protect the Rights of Children The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland, proclaimed 1 June to be International Children’s Day in 1925. It is usually marked with speeches on children’s rights and wellbeing, and other events involving or dedicated to children. On 19 August 1982, at its emergency special session on the question of Palestine, the General Assembly decided to commemorate 4 June as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse. This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect the rights of children. Childline is an effective non-profit organisation that works collectively to protect children from all forms of violence and to create a culture of children’s rights in South Africa. Childline services began in KwaZulu-Natal in 1986 in response to the very high levels of child abuse. Other provincial offices developed from this date, with the national office opening on 1 August 2003. Childline South Africa is committed to: • Developing appropriate social services, including a 24-hour toll-free helpline and supportive therapeutic social services for children who have been victims of violence, and their families. • Education and awareness programmes facilitating the prevention of violence against children. • Networking to establish strategic alliances with the aim of advocating for policy changes that will facilitate good management practices for abused children. • Research into violence against children within the South African context. • Ongoing training and development of staff members and volunteers.

Love the Babies in 2016

Durban businesswoman, well-known designer and mum, Kathrin Kidger, is encouraging moms to support the Robin Hood Foundation’s Love the Babies 2016 campaign. After having a clear out of the baby items she’s lovingly kept from her children, she wants to encourage the moms in our community to do the same. “I was so saddened to hear how the mums of these newborns have nothing, not even a blanket for their babies. There is nothing more special than knowing your treasured baby outfits will be bringing a smile to the face of a new mum and keep a newborn snug and warm,” said Kathrin. “Love the Babies is such a great initiative, I’d like to encourage all the mums in our community to get involved.” The Love the Babies project is the first project that led to the formation of the Robin Hood Foundation. Through this project, needy moms from AIDS affected communities are given a Love the Babies bag for the first year of their new baby’s life. It is essentially a baby shower in a bag. Included in these bags are towelling nappies, disposable nappies, second-hand and new baby clothes, booties, hats, bibs, blankets, towels, toys and teddies.

The International Women’s Club of Durban
The International Women’s Club of Durban is one of the many IWCs operating around the world. They are a non-profit organisation whose main goal is to bring together ladies of all nationalities to forge new friendships, learn about different cultures and to contribute to charitable projects.
Since their first meeting in November 2015 – where seven women of various nationalities took on this ‘venture’ – they have gathered ideas and experiences and started planning events, activities and objectives. The club now boasts over 50 members, has had two successful events, and is growing quickly. New members are most welcome to join and benefit from new friendships, as well as the various activity clubs which can make Durban a more exciting place to live. The clubs on offer are: Arts and Crafts, Book Club, Cooking Club, Movie Club, Travel Club, Sunshine Kids Club (philanthropic club in which they read to
underprivileged kids), Wine Tasting Club, Walking Club, Yoga and Meditation Club as well as the possibility of a Golf Club and a Games Club in the future. The rest of this year’s functions are as follows: • 2 June 2016 at 9:30am for 10am – Domino Foundation tea at COGS (Church of the Good Shepard) on Mackeurtan Avenue in Durban North. • 4 August at 9:30 for 10am – Women’s Day function at COGS. • 6 October at 9:30am for 10am – family picnic by the lake at Botanical Gardens. • 1 December at 9:30am for 10am – Christmas/end of year function at COGS. The feeling of closing the front door once we had arrived home safely can probably be compared to winning a challenge on The Amazing Race. We were home – now what? Tip 1: Check the nappy – we had checked all the boxes but baby was still not happy, until we realised we had forgotten to change her nappy. Once changed, baby passed out immediately. Tip 2: Get a heater – heat the room before bath time and baby will just lie there, enjoying the warmth, never mind the sweat dripping from my forehead, as long as baby is happy. Right? Tip 3: Relax – everything is going to fine. We tend to be on edge most of the time in the beginning… this feeling does go away, I think. Tip 4: Accept help – family and friends will pop over with dishes of their favourite offerings. Accept this with open arms – they genuinely want to help.
