A Featured Dad for Father’s Day

charmainelingard@remax.net

Pictured above is Durban father Anil Singh with his 3 and a half year old daughter, Avariyah Singh. Avariyah’s mom is Viraksha Singh – a finance administrator and part-time photographer. Anil is a Data Operations Controller. Avariyah is a very loving, shy but talkative and curious little girl. She doesn’t like being corrected; she believes she’s an adult! “Avariyah may be daddy’s little girl but she takes after her mom. She enjoys dancing and entertains us with her moves,” laughs her mom. “She is also creative; she watches the series “Mister Maker” and does crafts with me. Avariyah always loved her books, from her first baby book at three months. She reads the pictures and makes up stories with her vivid imagination.” “Being a dad to Avariyah is the most rewarding role I have played in my life. To have someone that looks up to me for answers to her questions or to kiss her ‘boo-boos’. Avariyah means ‘the first ray of light from the sun’ and indeed she is the light in our lives. Our lives have shone so brightly since she blessed us with her presence,” says Anil. “My advice to other dads would be to be patient with your child and your wife – moms do have a tougher job than dads. Be supportive in your child’s activities to show them that their dad is also very much involved in their interests,” he concludes. Written by Sarah Mackintosh www.mumsmail.com

The Color Run Carnival Heads to Durban On 14 July The Color Run Carnival will be rolling into Durban, starting at Durban North College at 10am. This will be the fifth time The Color Run has come to Durban. A carnival by definition is a colourful community celebration providing lighthearted amusement, fun and frivolity for all ages. It is the perfect backdrop for The Color Run, a kid friendly family event which itself is globally recognised as the happiest way to get to a healthy place, at your own pace, no matter your age or fitness level. Think explosions of colour at every kilometre and finishing looking rainbow kissed, to then be greeted in the Festival Zone by the sights, sounds and entertainment of the carnival. There’ll be music, themed entertainers, stilt walkers, balloon shapers, lots of good natured clowning around and all the fun of the fair, doused liberally with the famous bursts of colour! As always, The Color Run is focused on community - this includes a conscious effort to ensure that the region benefits from an influx of carnival goers. Last year over R500 000 was raised for local causes and educational-based initiatives in the areas it visited, and they have every intention of beating this in 2018. This family friendly, alcohol-free event has had 6 million runners world-wide and is run in 40 countries and 230 cities over the world. Tickets sales are now open at www.thecolorrun.co.za. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 5 family packages to give away (4 x entries per family package) for The Color Run Durban. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter. www.mumsmail.com

Save a Life and Donate Blood

Every year on 14 June countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. An adequate supply can only be ensured through regular donations by voluntary, unpaid blood donors.

– so make a difference this June and head to your nearest donor centre. The Sunflower Fund urges the public to become stem cell donors If someone is diagnosed with a blood disease, sometimes the only hope of survival is a stem cell transplant. However finding a match is exceptionally challenging especially given the fact that there is only a 30% chance of finding a match with a family member. Finding a matched unrelated donor might be someone’s only hope of survival and you might just be that match. The Sunflower Fund is the premier organisation in Southern Africa that actively recruits stem cell donors, create awareness about the need for and the process involved in being a stem cell donor and raises funds for the tissue-typing cost of R3000 per individual to register as a donor.

South African National Blood Service Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and, for this reason, it is important for blood donors to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks. Every unit of blood can save up to three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets. SANBS aims to collect 3000 units of blood per day to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply in the health care system. The current blood supply is at only a few days stock left and they desperately need donors to donate

Father’s Day Recipe Potato & Chorizo Breakfast Hash This seems like a recipe a dad would love – so if you’re planning to make a Father’s Day breakfast, why not try this one from Jamie Oliver? Ingredients • 1 large onion • 1 clove of garlic • 120g quality chorizo • 2-3 cooked potatoes • 1/2 bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley • Olive oil • 2 large free-range eggs Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic, chop the chorizo, dice up the cooked potato and finely chop the parsley. Gently fry the onion and garlic in a little oil in an ovenproof pan until the onion is soft. Add the chorizo and fry for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the potatoes and cook for 5 minutes more, then crack the eggs on top. Transfer the pan to the preheated oven and bake for 8 minutes, or until the egg white is set but the yolk is still runny. Sprinkle with sea salt, black pepper and the parsley, to serve.

The Benefits of Colostrum

When mammals, including humans, are born the first food they receive is mother’s colostrum. This pre-milk fluid is a wonder of nature, packed with nourishment – immune tonics, growth factors and a unique balance of vitamins and minerals. Colostrum supports healthy growth and development and a naturally responsive immune system. It provides critical immune factors and complex lipids for overall health and wellbeing. New Image is the market leader in products containing premium bovine colostrum. Because colostrum is non-species specific, bovine colostrum can be taken by humans. Colostrum is nature’s first food, of vital importance, and made available to you by New Image. Colostrum benefits four aspects of the human body – it builds repairs, strengthens and restores: • The hormonal system back to levels associated with youth • The immune system to its top fighting form • The digestive system to its optimal function • And it even provides you with every basic essential nutrient.

As cows produce far more colostrum than their calf requires, they can harvest the excess while maintaining strict animal welfare guidelines. Every batch of New Image colostrum is tested to ensure purity and compliance with industry and food safety guidelines. Why you should take Colostrum everyday Colostrum is a natural source of many bioactive compounds and valuable growth and immune factors that work synergistically to: • Improve your immune system and give greater health • Heal and protect the digestive tract • Enhance natural cellular repair, healing and tissue regeneration • Promote energy and vitality through healthy ageing. Importance of Childhood Vaccines

Immunisation is the best way to ensure that children are healthy and protected from preventable diseases. Vaccines save millions of lives yearly. The eradication of smallpox in the 1970s led to the introduction of the ‘Expanded Program on Immunisation’ by the World Health Organisation. Universal vaccination was introduced against ‘the big six’ diseases – polio, tuberculosis, measles, diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus. In South Africa, newer vaccines have been introduced as they have been developed, allowing protection against Haemophilus influenza type b, Streptococcus pneumoniae, hepatitis B, human papillomavirus and rotavirus. These vaccines are making a large impact on the health of South African children. Vaccines protect children from serious illness and complications which can include pneumonia, hearing loss, convulsions, brain damage, and death. Vaccines undergo careful review by pharmaceutical companies, medical doctors and the department of health which ensures

they are safe and effective. Non-immunised children can spread disease to others who are too young to be vaccinated, the elderly or to people with weakened immunity. Over the years, vaccines have generated some controversy over safety, but no convincing evidence of harm has been found. And although children can have a reaction to any vaccine, the important thing to know is that the benefits of vaccinations far outweigh the possible side effects. Disease prevention is the key to public health. It is always better to prevent a disease than to treat it.

Dr Des @Home: Men’s Health Month

Men are usually “too busy” or “feel fine” when the topic of annual check-ups are touched. Many of the major health risks that men face – like colon cancer, prostate cancer and heart disease – can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis. Screening tests can find diseases early! Below are screening guidelines for men ages 40 to 64:

Blood Pressure: Have it checked once a year, unless you are a diabetic or have kidney problems. High Blood pressure puts unnecessary pressure on your heart and vessels that can lead to stroke and organ damage.

a simple stool test to a colonoscopy if you have any change in bowl motion. Osteoporosis is common in men that have a low body weight, smoke, had long term steroid use, had a fracture after age 50, have a history of heavy alcohol use, etc. A bone density test is available to test for this and is necessary to treat it. Prostate cancer must be screened for in men over 50, earlier testing is important for men with a family history or symptoms. Physical exams every five years and a PSA blood test yearly are sufficient in asymptomatic individuals.

High cholesterol can increase your risk of having a heart attack. Men should visit their GP once a year even if they have no time. Have those screening Test your glucose to rule out Diabetes. tests done, discuss possible situations that might lead to depression and anxiety and Colon cancer screening should be done if just make sure everything is really fine! you are between 50 and 75 (unless you have By Dr Deseré Ferreira, 031 – 582 5301. a family history of this). Reaching Your Fibre Needs During Winter

Winter is on our doorstep. There’s no escape from the icy cold mornings and nights. While you’re preparing for the drop in temperature by bringing out your thermals and thick cosy blankets, it’s important to also prepare your diet accordingly. This may sound absurd, however, when comfort foods are in and cold fruits and salads are out, the end result could be an insufficient fibre intake. Besides the benefits of good digestive health, fibre intake also plays a role in immunity. So, here are our top tips to reach your fibre needs:

Make breakfast ‘oat so good’ and warm up with a bowl of oats. Add some cinnamon for flavour and added health benefits. Try making oat crumpets on the weekend – not only will these be a healthier option, but the kids will love them too!

versatile! Add them to your favourite winter soup or curry or even use them as the base for various vegetarian meals. Up your veg with a cup of edge. When salads become less appealing, be sure to maintain fibre intake from vegetables. Cut up vegetables such as carrots, cucumber, celery, peppers and broccoli into sticks. Chickpeas, which make the base of hummus as a dip, are a great source of fibre. Add cayenne pepper to the hummus for added health benefits. Include a wholegrain in your main. Whether you’re making a pasta or rice dish or indulging in a warm salad, make sure that you include at least one serving of wholegrains in every meal.

Include beans by all means. Beans and lentils are a fantastic source of fibre and are oh so

Montessori Umhlanga and Sunningdale Friends

Good friends, Sarah Tryon and Kavita Haripersad have decided to amalgamate their schools Sunningdale Pre-Primary and Montessori Umhlanga. This will happen on 1 July and they are very excited about what is to come with this new venture.

Montessori has been a feeder school to Hamptons for the past five years and has always enjoyed this valuable relationship. The school will now be known as ‘Montessori Umhlanga and Sunningdale Friends’, and will now be under the leadership of Kavita Haripersad and Michele Price. The school will now offer both Montessori and CAPS systems, as well as a traditional playschool – allowing parents with more than one child to choose the avenue best suited for that particular child all in one school. Montessori Umhlanga and Sunningdale Friends is the sister school to Hamptons and they look forward to many more years of educating young minds and partnering with Hamptons in raising brilliant leaders for the future.

The school will be based at the current Montessori Umhlanga in Sunningdale. The vision of the school remains the same, and they aim to instil these values in their children: • Compassion and kindness • Safety and security • Inclusion of diverse perspectives and cultures • Respect for life and the environment • Honesty and integrity • Striving for excellence • Peace and cooperation throughout the local and global community • Leadership within our school community and beyond • Independence and confidence. They aspire to cultivate a life-long love of learning and inspire them to realise their full potential while enjoying life’s journey and positively contributing to the world around them. 30 Seconds to a Fun Lunchbox

PRE-SCHOOL AND BABY CARE

Need an easy way to make lunches more fun? 30 seconds is all it takes to wow your kids! I have to admit that I love making fun lunchboxes for my kids. It’s known that kids are influenced by what they see… presentation is everything! Although many lunch-packing mums (and dads) might think this is time-consuming, I promise you, it can take as little as 30 seconds, and your kids will love it! Using colourful silicon muffin cups add a pop of bright colour to the lunchbox. They make the perfect lunchbox compartments for all the fruit, veggies, crackers, cereal, and cheese… and help to separate the food options. Sandwiches on whole-wheat bread provide a healthier option, but they can get boring after a while, so why not have a bit of fun and transform their shape with a cookie cutter, or a LunchPunch? Just place it on top of the already-made sandwich and push down hard. Done! And while the majority of goodness, should come from the food our kids eat, the truth is that often much of those lunchboxes come home half-eaten. Multi-vitamins can help to add a boost of energy to their day, and they taste delicious. Deborah Andrews, founder of Lunchbox Lifesavers, wants to encourage mums (and dads) to have more fun with the most mundane of jobs – the lunchbox packing! “Obviously there’s no need to do this every day, and you don’t even have to do all of these at once! Just a bit of fun in the lunchbox every once in a while goes a long way,” says Deborah. For more simple and fun ways to make that lunchbox a bit more fun, visit Lunchbox Lifesavers on Facebook or Instagram: www.facebook.com/ LunchboxLifesavers or www.instagram. com/lunchbox_lifesavers.

Everyday Life

On Being a Dad It’s a wonderful feeling. It rushes through you from head to toe. It ejects love, adrenaline, confidence, knowledge, and pride into you and makes you an instant superhero. That’s the feeling of a parent the second their child is born. Nothing anyone can say to you can explain what happens when you become a dad – it is such an extraordinary event, truly lifechanging, that it is impossible to conceive in advance how it will affect you, how it will alter your mind and how it will expand your heart. I was overwhelmed with love and pride. It’s the kind of pride that only jumps into your body the second your child is born and it’s this newfound pride that stays with you from then onwards. I never knew this feeling existed and I never knew how beautiful it would feel to have this continuous feeling of pride. It’s empowering, it’s humbling, and it’s probably one of the best feelings any parent can have.

into you that quickly changes the way you manage your time, who you chose to hang around with and how you spend your money (ha ha!). Parenthood is extremely rewarding. Yes, some days will be long, and the nights even longer – dinner will probably only be eaten after 8pm, but it’s okay. What I have come to understand is that as much as you are learning how to be a parent, your baby is adapting to being in the outside world. Take it easy. Enjoy the happy mornings and stay calm through the cranky afternoons, listen to your parenting instincts, and support one another. Above all this, I have learned to love like I never thought possible.

Let’s go back to 15 December 2015 at 2:30pm - the moment our daughter came into the world. I will admit; I was nervous about becoming a father. So many questions… However, as Gia came into the world, all that nervousness went away immediately. It is a surreal feeling, a feeling of love beyond measure, a feeling so intense that it can’t be described or compared to anything else. As a husband and dad, I love wholeheartedly, I give my undivided attention, and I marvel at every moment of Gia’s life. As a child, I never had the kind of father that joined in on the adventure of growing up, the kind of father that gave his attention to us selflessly and who thrilled in the excitement of being young and carefree. I know what I needed back then, and that is how I view my parenting and the decisions I make for Gia. I have now been a dad for 30 whole months, and I have learned so many valuable lessons. By Don “The Don Father” Dinnematin, It is a wonderful thing how your little baby, www.thedonfather.co.za, www.facebook. who knows nothing about the big world com/thedonfathersa, www.instagram. can instil so much wisdom and realisation com/thedonfathersa. www.mumsmail.com
