Editor’s Life

End of my Journey In case you’ve not yet heard the news via the grapevine, I wanted to let you know that I have come to the end of my very exciting and fulfilling almost 12-year journey as owner and editor of Mum’s Mail. The brand would not have been where it is today if not for wonderful readers and advertisers like yourself. I have loved every minute of this journey (okay, maybe the monthly deadlines NOT so much...) and I’ve thrived on the adrenaline rush, but my season has come to an end and I’m looking forward to taking some time off to spend with my hubby and kids (and those much needed cooking lessons I’ve been threatening to enrol for). I’ll also be kept very busy organising THE event of the year – the 11th annual Mum’s Mail High Tea in association with The Sunflower Fund!

Wishing all moms a very happy Mother’s Day!

My “baby” has been sold to the most awesome couple, Andrew and Victoria Arthur who have a fantastic vision for the growth of Mum’s Mail. They have two young children, Evie and Jacob, so they are in “the know” when it comes to the juggling act that is parenting.

Alice and her team have done such a wonderful job over the past 12 years establishing Mum’s Mail as a much loved and trusted brand. It’s now our goal to make Mum’s Mail a national force and the “go to” community for families needing any help, ideas and advice,” added Victoria.

Their son Jacob (13) is in Grade 8 at Crawford La Lucia. He loves sport and computers and is a maths wizard. Their daughter Evie just turned 11 and is in Grade 5 at La Lucia Primary. She also loves sport and has a passion for dance. “We are swimming against the tide a little by immigrating to South Africa, as many Victoria and Andrew have both started people seem to be going the other way. Sky Grand Prix Bets on Greyville The extremely popular Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics will return to the skies of Durban on 28 May at Greyville Race Course. This event goes beyond any other aviation event that has been staged in Durban or South Africa. Spectators can look forward to the thrilling sounds and aerobatics of these flying machines as they execute their manoeuvers with speed and fine precision. This event is unique and, unlike other aviation events, it’s not happening at an airport but in the skies above Greyville Race Course and the Royal Durban Golf Course. This event will be held in conjunction with the Annual Daily News 2000 horse race. The Daily News 2000 is seen as the precursor race meeting for the Vodacom Durban July. The Sky Grand Prix will see over 10 000 people descending on Greyville Race Course to enjoy top class aerobatic racing, fly pasts and other festivities that the organisers are planning for the day. The Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics is a competition, which will see 10 experienced aerobatic pilots competing against each other over the skies of Royal Durban Golf Course. The pilots’ technical manoeuvers will be analysed by a panel of SAC judges and will ultimately result in a champion being crowned. Tickets are available via Computicket and at Greyville on the day at a cost of R220 per adult and R50 for children under 12. For more information contact topnotch079@gmail.com or 082 882 5056. Saint Giles Fundraiser at The Barnyard

Saint Giles, a non-profit organisation for the disabled, will host a fundraising evening at The Barnyard Theatre Gateway on 15 July at 7pm. The show will be Six Of The Best – a tribute to surpass all tributes, a celebration of the music of the six greatest pop icons of all time – Freddie Mercury, Bon Jovi, Meatloaf, Billy Joel, Pink and Cher all on one stage, in one show, singing number one hits from the last four decades of pop music. Imagine Meatloaf challenging the vocal ability of Freddie, who in turn has to compete with Bon Jovi. Then there is the power and beauty of Pink, the soulfulness of Billy, and of course let’s not forget the flamboyance and decadence of Cher! Six Of The Best is about showmanship, charisma and the music that all comes together in one big concert that will blow your mind!

from these six artists – Freddie Mercury’s anthems Bohemian Rhapsody, A Kind Of Magic and We Are The Champions, Bon Jovi’s rock numbers You Give Love A Bad Name, Bed Of Roses and Bad Medicine, Meatloaf’s larger-than-life I’d Do Anything For Love and It’s All Coming Back To Me Now, Billy Joel’s piano ballads Piano Man, New York State Of Mind and Honesty, Cher’s women-power hits Believe and Strong Enough and Pink’s party tracks Just Like A Pill and Raise Your Glass. Tickets cost R155 per person and there will be raffle tickets on sale for a liquor hamper and a Lauren Ginn Fashion Accessories hamper. Seats are limited. A Mom in a Million

MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL

In honour of Mother’s Day on 8 May, Mum’s Mail interviewed Ballito mom of two, Rene Cornelli. She has two teenage children – Vincent (18) and Camryn (14). When Rene’s son was struggling in matric she put her life on hold to work intensively with him for three months to ensure he matriculated with a university exemption. She has also been homeschooling her daughter, Camryn, for the last four years. Camryn sustained severe head trauma in a car accident in March 2004, which resulted in some learning difficulties. “After issues with mainstream schools and being unable to find a suitable (and available) remedial facility, I made the decision to attempt homeschooling. This was a tough decision, as I was one of those parents dead against the movement. I think that attitude had a lot to do with our social conditioning!” explained Rene. “I was faced with a child that could not even read or write properly. Within the first year Camryn learned to read (and is now an avid bookworm) and could write a cohesive sentence. She developed a great memory and grasped most new concepts quickly with the one-on-one approach. There is great homeschooling support out there amongst the moms and I believe that we help each other on every level – personally, socially and academically.” “Spending so much time with my children and helping them through school has given me purpose and filled my life with unconditional love. Nothing tops the close relationship I have with my children and I can only attribute that to all the time we have spent together. It is a privilege to guide, teach and cultivate a child from birth to adulthood… wow what a ride!” www.mumsmail.com

Everyday Life

Women’s Support Programme Alison Hadfield, vice principal of Victory Christian Academy in La Lucia, Durban North, is launching a Women’s support programme aimed at women of all ages that are experiencing challenges in coping with life after suffering trauma. “I have been involved with supporting survivors of trauma and training de-briefers at the various crisis centres, based at the police stations, for several years. My experience has shown me that women who are newly single or mothers who are having difficulty after a trauma, at any age, need recovery support as well as practical tips on managing everyday tasks. I will be facilitating a recovery support project that will assist women, during the time of recovery, with counselling and guidance, offering opportunity for them to become purposeful in the community, as they progress through the process. It will give them an opportunity to give back to the community, restoring self-worth and value,” she said.

They are calling on members of the community to come forward and train as potential facilitators going forward. After the eight-weeks, the course will resume each Wednesday from 20 July. “This project’s primary aim is to assist any woman from any community who needs encouragement and support,” added Alison. Do You Need an ActionCOACH? Women need to cut themselves some slack. They are entrepreneurs, workaholics, mothers and wives. They run businesses and households with two completely different portions of their brain. They’re sticking plasters on boo-boos while budgeting for the third quarter. “It’s all about counter-balance,” says Deborah Coskey of ActionCOACH. “When one ball is thrown up into the air, another one lands firmly in your palm. It’s a juggling act, but one that we carry out with precision.” Deborah is a divorced mom, successful business coach and entrepreneur. She understands how important it is for your business to run smoothly when you’re not there. “I teach my clients how to structure their day, maintain focus and work ON the business, instead of IN the business. Your company needs to run without you and still make a profit. We find out why it isn’t doing this, and help you achieve your goals.”

Why Choose My Chef? If you are too busy to do homework with the kids, spend quality time with hubby and kids and still prepare healthy meals for the family, then My Chef is your supper solution. It will make every night in the kitchen stress-free, plus save you time and money. My Chef offers a range of quick, easy and healthy meals, delivered to your door every Tuesday and Friday. If you have a busy life and shopping, chopping and cooking are taking too much time, consider this solution. To get started visit www.mychef.co.za and view the comprehensive menus, which change weekly, giving you the freedom of choice. After choosing the meals that suit you and your family, pay securely online, sit back and wait for your food to be delivered to your door. Once you’ve received your meals, follow the simple cooking instructions to prepare the most delicious meal. One of the things I love most about My Chef is that they change their menus weekly, so you never get bored with the options on offer. I also love that I can order the meals in different portion sizes, so while my hubby and I love curry (the hotter the better), our kids don’t like it at all. So I simply order two portions of curry and two portions of cottage pie for example – and I don’t know of any mom or dad who would have the time or the energy to cook two different meals for their families. Dinner is sorted and delish and everyone is happy! Contact: 086 169 2433, www.mychef.co.za.

Papparoti’s: World Famous Caramelised Buns

TAFTA MEALS ON WHEELS

Having earned widespread acclaim for its signature aromatic buns and unique beverage options, Papparoti’s has finally found a home in South Africa. The brand’s success was established thanks to its authentic taste of the deliciously coated buns and renowned beverages. Started in Malaysia in 2003, there are now over 400 Papparoti stores and kiosks across the globe. The distinctive aroma entices customers to try one of the numerous creative toppings. The magic begins from the moment you sink your teeth into the crispy outer layer of the bun. This crunchy layer is derived from a creamy concoction that has been carefully created with only the finest flour. The popular coffee caramel buns have gained praise globally and now can be enjoyed right here in Durban. Papparoti provides a new and unique home-baked snack experience at any time of the day. They pride themselves on excellent customer service and the friendly, welltrained and efficient staff are always ready to serve you and assist you in making your Papparoti’s experience a pleasant one. Sit and enjoy some conversation with a good friend, enjoy family time or treat the kids on a Friday after school. Watch the staff meticulously spreading the topping in concentric circles for a stunning effect. These glazed, caramel-coated buns are primed for a brief spell in the oven before being served to you, freshly-baked and with a distinct aroma. Special Offer: Papparoti’s is offering every Mum’s Mail reader a free papa kadak chai tea and bun when they visit the store at Westwood Mall and present this article. Dr Des @ home Human bites and skin infections Fungal: Treat itchy groins and toes with an antifungal after drying the areas properly. Viral: Usually blisters with clear liquid and swollen glands or anything from a fine red rash to blotchy spots. It needs to run its course so treat symptomatically for fever and itching. Bacterial: Usually pussy with redness and swelling. Staph Aureus is usually the culprit. Prevent the overgrowth of it by adding a splash of Dettol to the bath, keeping nails short and fingers out of the noses. A mozzie bite, scratched with a dirty fingernail is the most common root of super infection ending up in long courses of antibiotics. Human bites: No blood? Rub Arnica, but if it’s a proper wound, antibiotics must be started and HIV testing considered. A finger prick test with both children and their parents present is traumatic but quick: rather be safe than sorry!

Breast Milk Storage Bags

In the first few days after delivery, breasts can become engorged with excess milk and mothers may find it convenient to express and store their breast milk for later use. But some of the storage products on the market are very expensive and it is not a viable option for everyone.

Snookums has just launched affordable presterilised storage bags that are ready to use and are ideal for storing and freezing excess expressed breast milk for future use. Features: • The 25 breast milk storage bags are pre-sterilised. • Panel for writing (easy identification and dating). • Convenient pour spout with easy stand base. • Extra strong easy zip lock seal, leak-proof bag can hold up to 150ml. • BPA free, EU safety tested.

water before handling the pre-sterilised bag. • Mark each bag with the date and time when you expressed the milk. • Tear open the bag horizontally along the perforated edge at the top, in the direction of the arrowhead. • Hold the opened bag with one hand and use the other hand to pour the freshly expressed breast milk into the bag slowly, not filling the bag beyond 150ml. • Before sealing the bag, squeeze out the air and use your fingers to zip close the bag. • For best results, keep the bag upright, in a separate hard sided container until the milk has frozen. • Store the breast milk in the back of the fridge for 24 hours or in the back of freezer for three months.

Tips for Storing Breast Milk • Wash your hands well with soap and

He Ate Chocolate and Lost 45kgs in 18 Weeks Three and a half years ago, Brett Austin was 65kgs heavier, with borderline diabetes, gout, ADHD and bi-polar. Thankfully he listened to his wake up call, realised that “we are what we eat” and started transforming his lifestyle and restoring his health. “Chocolate was a challenge for me, I didn’t want to give that up, so after researching, I made my own ‘fat-burning chocolate’, allowing me to eat two ‘fudge-size’ pieces every day. And the weight kept falling off me!” says Brett.

I filled my book, To All The People of The Planet, with all the tips and tools I used (including recipes), to help everyone live their best lives too.” Brett says the bottom line was he stopped eating C.R.A.P. (Carbonated, Refined, Artificial, Preservatives) and chose yummy, natural, plant-based, food instead. “I was a plumber for many years, and nowadays I joyfully support folks to keep their inner plumbing clear of blockages too.”

The good news is that neurofeedback has a high success rate in helping people rebalance their brains. Think of your brain as the pilot of an aeroplane, your nervous system as the controls and the body of the plane as your body. Making sure the pilot is in good shape (i.e. ‘balanced’) is the first step to harmonising the whole body. After that you can work towards wellness and performance optimisation. Brain Harmonics brain training sessions Family Practice consist of the following: 1. Assessment: Each brain is unique. They at The Square find out what your brain patterning looks like and how it operates when you are Tel: 031 – 566 7000 resting and busy. To do this they place non-invasive electrodes on your head to 250 Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Umhlanga measure the activity in your brain. Dr Natasha Colia 2. Discussion: They discuss the assessment results and your aims, and set out a plan for Children’s Health & Allergies neurofeedback training sessions. Dr Rosie Carey 3. Sessions: You perform tasks on a computer while you are given immediate Women’s Health feedback on your brain activity. They track your brain activity by means of state-of-theDr Leon Ehlers art software. Feedback on the brain activity Male & Female Executive Medicals (‘rewards’) is given as sounds (e.g. beeps) Botox & Fillers and visual cues. When your brain hears itself and registers these rewards it is able Sexual Health to make changes to patterns that it may be stuck in. About Hives

The medical term for hives is urticaria. It’s a common condition that causes raised red bumps or welts to appear on the skin. The skin usually feels itchy but sometimes may sting or burn. The lesions may last 30 minutes to 48 hours. As some lesions heal, new ones may develop. Lesions can be found anywhere on the body. The lesions vary in size and shape. Some may be raised lumps, ring like patterns or raised red lines. Sometimes hives may be associated with swelling of the lips and eyes called angioedema.

We characterise urticaria into acute (lasts less than six weeks) and chronic (lasts more than six weeks).

Chronic urticaria may be associated with certain autoimmune conditions but there is usually no direct cause and may have random triggers. Special blood tests will need to be done in chronic urticaria. First line treatment of hives is antihistamines. Chronic hives may require change of treatment or a combination of special medicines to achieve control. Severe cases may require a short course of oral cortisone. If there is any associated difficulty in breathing then the patient should be taken urgently to the emergency room. Contact: Dr Imraan Jhetam, Specialist Dermatologist, 031 – 208 3370, info@skindoctor.co.za, www.skinmedics.co.za.

Acute urticaria is usually part of an allergic reaction to food likes shellfish and nuts and medications but may also be triggered by insect bites, exposure to plants and chemicals, infections and stress.

Fitness Classes for Everyone

Mavrick Robberts survived heart surgery at the age of 17 and has lost over 30kgs – he plans to compete in the World Beauty Fitness and Fashion competition (WBFF) in June. His life now revolves around fitness and healthy living. Mavrick loves the challenges of being in the fitness industry – he says each day is different. He now runs fitness classes in Cowies Hill and believes fitness is not only beneficial to your health, but it also helps you to destress and gives you time to relax and have some ‘me time’. The classes are suitable for all ages, genders and fitness levels – they start you off slowly and build you up to a fitness level that you are comfortable to train at – they are there to assist you, not to punish you! The classes run every month at a cost of R400 per month for eight classes. Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 7pm. They also run a free Saturday morning class from 7.30am to 8.30am that is open to anyone.

Lupus Awareness Lupus is more pervasive and more severe than people think, and has an impact that the public doesn’t realise. In fact, research shows that nearly two-thirds of the public knows little or nothing about lupus. You can help change that. May is Lupus Awareness Month and Lupus Awareness Day is on 10 May – Lupus support groups around the world ask that you support this cause by wearing a purple ribbon or purple clothing on the day – and help raise awareness by telling people why.

Common symptoms include the swelling of the hands and feet, blood clotting, painful joints, fatigue and skin lesions to mention a few. Lupus is not infectious and it is difficult to diagnose as it mimics other illnesses. There is currently no cure for Lupus and it cannot be prevented but it can be managed with medication and a healthier lifestyle.

Local resident Nirupa Jugmohan was diagnosed with Lupus 20 years ago and she has formed a support group for Lupus sufferers – Lupus Support SA. Cleopatra’s Secret Cleopatra was revered for her flawless beauty and it is well known that her secret was to bathe in milk. Is this a myth or is the fountain of youth in fact a silky milk mixture? Lactic Acid is derived from fermented milk and is made up of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and herein lies the scientific evidence to support Cleopatra’s seemingly bizarre practices.

Healthy Skin is Beautiful Skin

MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL Spoil your Mum or Wife with a one Dr Hauschka Skin Care is a line of products month contract born from a passion for natural medicine, for only R699 healthy skin and the rhythms of nature. SAVE R251! A legacy of care: 47 years ago, a revolutionary line of skin care was introduced based on the concept that if you support the health of your skin, beauty will inevitably follow. This approach stood in stark contrast to conventional skin care lines that held the idea that beautiful skin required quick fixes and cover-ups. Healthy skin is beautiful skin. The experts at Dr Hauschka Skin Care stand by this fact. They recommend an approach to skin care that complements the biology of the skin and supports long-term skin health. Because beautiful skin isn’t always healthy – but healthy skin is always beautiful. I love the Dr Hauschka products. After being diagnosed with adult acne in my 30s and after taking medication, I decided that I didn’t want to do that anymore and wanted to go for a more organic, chemical free approach. A friend gave me a few samples and I was hooked from then on as these products REALLY work. I’ve now been using it for five years or more and won’t change to anything else. I personally use the products for combination skin which include the Intensive Treatment, Translucent Bronzing Tint, Clarifying toner, Soothing Cleansing Milk, Clarifying Day Oil, Melissa Day Cream, and Rose Day Cream Light. Bullying: A True Story My Life as a Fat Kid – Jonathan, KZN “Every day I wake up and I am scared to speak up about my problems. I go to school seeking an education but unfortunately that isn’t possible due to all of the people who bully me. They constantly abuse me both physically and emotionally. I am sad that I have to share this story but I know that it will help others in my situation.” According to Times Live SA more than 57% of school going children have fallen victim to bullying.

Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. There is a strong link between bullying and suicide. In recent years, a series of bullying related suicides across the globe have drawn attention to the connection between bullying and suicide. Though too many adults still see bullying as “just part of being a kid”, it is a serious problem that leads to many negative effects for victims, including suicide. Many people may not realise that there is also a link between being a bully and suicide. Salvator stands against bullying. Salvator offers a bullying awareness seminar and self-defence training, thus giving the victims of bullying the skills and ability to deal with a bully and to cope with the emotional stress that is associated with bullying. This awareness programme aims to educate the victims, the bullies and the parents of all school going children. Contact: jason@salvator-cpm.com, 083 677 9394, www.salvator-cpm.com. Meltdowns and Muddles As a parent or carer it is no easy task to deal with your child when they present with increased aggression or even uncontrolled anger and constant fighting with parents, siblings and friends. Bullying, school refusal, rebellious/oppositional behaviour and anxiety or increased fear and worries are all problems that are hard for parents and child to deal with. Current research on children’s brains has shown that their brains only mature when they are in their twenties. With immature developing brains, they have limited coping and processing skills to buffer the impact of life’s stressors and to develop the ability to regulate their behaviour and emotions in healthy ways. Children need the help of adults to make sense of BIG feelings, so they don’t present in meltdowns and muddles. Every child needs an adult who is able to tune in to their needs and to help them make sense of the world. This attachment relationship is often under immense strain either because the child’s behaviour causes feelings of disconnection, or the parent has their own stressors which make it difficult to regulate their own big feelings, never mind the child’s meltdowns and muddles.

At the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, fit is all important.

Homeschooling: A Credible Alternative to Formal Schooling In general, society is sceptical about homeschooling as a credible alternative to formal schooling. The concerns that are frequently raised revolve around the perceived lack of socialisation, the expectation that parents be several “subject specialists” in one, and an idea that homeschool children are somehow being isolated from the “real world”.

part of growth and development. Contrary to popular belief, the homeschool environment is vibrant and presents a myriad of opportunities for age-appropriate interaction and the nurturing of life-long friendships. On this point one needs to also give careful thought to understanding the true nature of healthy socialisation. The contrast is between group socialisation on the one hand, which teaches a child how to respond and move with the group, and individual socialisation on the other hand, which teaches a child how to successfully interact with other people.

Based on my experience as an educator and administrator in both the formal and home education sector, I can say with assurance that no other model of education enables children to receive one-on-one teaching, guidance and encouragement from their parents who know them intimately and can respond to their individual learning styles, Sport is another area of concern that is talents and needs. often raised by parents. Sceptics are quick to point out that the homeschooled child is at In addition, the model also allows for flexible risk of never developing his or her sporting time management as students are able to potential. One just has to look at first world work at their own pace in every subject. countries such as Holland and Australia By default, this creates space for a child to to realise that the global trend is toward spend more time on a subject that he or she children participating in sport through club finds challenging. structures, rather than through school. The formal school timetable approach is very limiting in this regard. The same principle applies to individual concentration span and/or physical ability. Most importantly, the homeschooled child is learning in the very environment where he or she is most cared for and accepted as an individual. This supports the development of a healthy self-esteem and sets the child on a path to achieving and maximising their personal potential. Parents considering the homeschool option with Accelerated Education Enterprises (AEE) have the added advantage of registering with a home school academy which provides all the necessary support and guidance that is required throughout the journey.

In South Africa there are many clubs and societies which children can participate in, and not only develop their physical and sporting skills but also enjoy healthy social interaction too. AEE distributes the CAPS-aligned A.C.E. learning programme for students from Grade R to 12. The A.C.E. curriculum facilitates biblical home education which has a proven track record in empowering parents to mentor their children to become strong in their Christian faith, to achieve academically, to discover their talents and move towards achieving their full and intended potential.

What about those common concerns? Socialisation is an extremely important www.mumsmail.com

Sinakekele Children Sinakekele (which means take good care of us) is a transitional home for abandoned babies situated in Verulam. It provides a nurturing environment for children that are waiting to be adopted.

ReadeRs aRe aCHIeveRs

Sinakekele was started by Ruth Grobler 12 years ago in her home and they now operate from a seven acre property in Oakford, Verulam, which borders a rural community.

We boast of an 8% to as much as a 40% increase in your child’s average performance in school.

They can accommodate up to six babies at a time. This operation is partly funded by corporate donors, as well as individual donors, various churches and North Durban Lions. They are also currently raising three orphans (12 to 14 years) who Ruth has adopted. The education of these children is covered by corporate and private donors. All these children have special needs.

We do a scientific test of your child’s reading so we know exactly how to address the problem. Invest in your child’s future & enrol them at our Reading Centre in HILLCResT.

Ukuthola Programme At Sinakekele there are six beautiful little children sleeping in the following cots, awaiting adoption: Love, Hope, Dream, Faith, Joy and Peace. You can help by sponsoring a cot for R100 per month. You are able to choose the cot you wish to sponsor. By pledging to give a monthly contribution you will be assisting Sinakekele in providing for the babies’ needs. This money will be put towards expenses such as formula, nappies, cereal, bath products, wet wipes, vitamins as well as medicine when needed. Other ways you can help: donate baby products and toiletries and food items, join Litres for Education and choose Sinakekele as your beneficiary, donate second-hand books for their library, or visit their Rustic Tea Garden on the first Saturday monthly and have a cuppa for a small donation. Contact Denise on 083 411 0789, find them on Facebook: SinakekeleChildren or visit www.sinakekele.org.za for more information. www.mumsmail.com

Smartstart Pregnancy Pack Mysmartkid, a local leader in the field of Early Childhood Development (ECD), are encouraging expectant parents to celebrate a lifetime of wonderment with the launch of their new Smartstart Pregnancy Pack. An exciting addition to the existing Mysmartkid offering, the Smartstart Pregnancy Pack focuses on in-utero stimulation, which has been shown to develop and strengthen neural pathways, priming babies for learning and interaction from birth. Focusing on three main areas of stimulation – touch and relaxation, voice and sound, and nesting and preparing for baby – this pack is particularly beneficial to mothers in the last two trimesters of their pregnancy, when their baby’s cognitive capabilities are developing. The Smartstart Pregnancy Pack is endorsed by Baby Sense and includes Natural Olive Tummy Wax from Oh-Lief, a Baby Sense Muslin Receiver, the Majors for Minors Baroque CD, the best-selling book by Meg Faure and Ann Richardson entitled Baby Sense, as well as a Mysmartkid sign for your car – a badge of honour proudly announcing: Smart Kid on Board! The Smartstart Pregnancy Pack is available online at www.mysmartkid.com at a cost of R325 excluding delivery and is the first available pack in the subscription programme. Once your child is born, you will receive a Smartbox every two months (the first one will contain two free welcome gifts).

Fantastic Funfair Party There is just something about candy floss and carnival games that brings a giddy grin to each and every child’s face. Step right up for some “Posh Top Tips” on how to DIY a funfair party! • Whether in your own backyard, or in one of Durban’s beautiful parks/gardens, make sure you opt for a venue with sufficient space for funfair activities. • Creative invitations will get the guests excited. “Entry tickets” are a fun option, or perhaps a carnival popcorn box, filled with corn kernels and the invitation printed on the box. • Entertainment and décor are possibly the most important elements of a funfair so Posh Party suggests spending the larger portion of your budget here. • Balloons and bunting are synonymous with funfairs! Patterned white and red balloons and bunting add a much needed carnival atmosphere. • Bring in a professional clown or stilt-walker to do face painting and balloon sculpting. • Old-school popcorn, candyfloss and slushpuppy stands will add a much-needed carnival feel and ensure the guests have something to snack/sip on throughout the day. • Hotdog stands are a quick, easy way to keep hunger at bay. • Bring in a few mechanical rides for extra fun. • It’s always nice to have something for little guests to take home, so have them try their hand at some carnival games with themerelated prizes on offer. For more information contact Natasha on natasha@ poshevents.co.za or 076 985 0438. Visit www.poshevents. co.za.

Explore uShaka’s New Sea Animal Encounters

I recently attended the launch of uShaka’s new Sea Animal Encounters. I got to experience the snorkel lagoon and I must admit that when I saw a shark swimming in my direction I had a mild panic attack and made a hasty retreat to the shallow waters – the uShaka crew watching me had a good laugh at my expense! Don’t worry – the sharks are perfectly safe to swim with!

The Ocean Walker (R150) allows you to walk on the ocean floor like the divers of old in lead boots. As you step out on the floor of the Open Ocean exhibit, you can gaze at huge fish, rays and sand sharks as they mill slowly around.

Experience an exotic island snorkelling experience, where you can explore nooks and crannies and take in the spectacle of This will be like nothing you have ever shining coral, gleaming fish and perfect done before – it’s closer, one-on-one and, peace (R85 for 30 minutes/R120 for an quite literally, hands-on.
