From the Editor’s Desk... Happy Mother’s Day to all our yummy mummies! We have some cute Mother’s Day gift and craft ideas for you in this issue. Why not make some yummy truffles that are so easy to make (or rather get Dad or Granny to make them with the kids, while you have a lovely lie in bed with your favourite book!) What did you think of the new look April issue? We have had some great response from our readers and we’d love to hear from you too, so please do send an email with your comments. Last month we had our highly anticipated 6th Annual PMB Ladies Breakfast on 12 April, which was a huge success. Over 200 ladies dressed to our chosen ‘Fifties’ theme and much fun was had by all. We managed to not only raise lots of funds for The Sunflower Fund but also helped to raise awareness too. As I write this, we have just returned from a pretty wet and cold Easter weekend at Splashy Fen Festival! We had a great time and got to see some really great bands. We managed to explore all the stages and various activations that they had on site. I really would recommend going next year if you haven’t been already. Wishing you all a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Meet the Cover Stars

In celebration of World Maternal Mental Health Month, this month’s cover stars are Alexandra Wallis with her children Anthony (8) and Oliva (5), Hayley Lieberthal with her daughter Caycee (1), and Lauren Shapiro with two of her children, Yishai (8) and Aviva (6).

They are members of Mums’ Support Network, a Durbanborn non-profit organisation for mothers having a hard time. Alex, who struggled with post-natal depression (PND) after each of her two children were born, founded the group in October 2016. “I felt I had no one to talk to about what I was going through. There was nowhere safe that I could be honest about how I was feeling,”

she says. Many women don’t speak about these issues because they are afraid to be seen as weak. This group exists to create a safe, non-judgmental space for moms who are struggling, where they can be supported. “We’ve journeyed with several mums from a place of fear and despair, to one of hope and freedom,” affirms Alex. “We were so excited to welcome our daughter into the world,” Hayley reminisces. “I knew a newborn would be hard work, but I didn’t expect the anxiety and fear. Nobody speaks about the anxiety.” Lauren, author of Through the Window: How I Beat PND, struggled while pregnant with

her third child. “Only after deteriorating enough to be hospitalised did I realise how vital it is to openly support each other as mothers,” she notes. Mums’ Support Network hosts a WhatsApp group that provides collective support almost 24/7, a private Facebook group, weekly support meetings and monthly Saturday morning social gatherings. Get in touch: www.mumsupport.co.za, FB: Mums Support Network, or contact Alexandra Wallis on 083 788 0689 or alexandra@ mumsupport.co.za. Written by Lauren Shapiro.

Personalised and Compassionate Care for Women

Dr Navashree Dhaver is a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who prides herself on superior patient care and satisfaction.

Not only is this health professional a well-read specialist - she also fulfils the role of a wife, mum, daughter and daughter-in-law, which allows her to relate to each and every client that walks through her doors. She married Dr Kamendran Govender - a warm and intelligent Gynae Oncologist. They have a beautiful son, Orion. Orion and her nieces, Tharanya and Diviya, and nephew Kai keep her well- grounded.

Dhaver. For this reason, the time she spends at home with her family is extremely precious to her and she cherishes every moment. “I have a strong support system both at work and at home, which helps a lot in maintaining that fine balance,” she says.

those little lives I bring into the world, the smiles and tears of happiness on mum’s and dad’s faces, on seeing their little bundle of love for the very first time,” she says. Dr Dhaver is also excited to be venturing in to the field of aesthetic gynaecology.

Dr Dhaver has dedicated her life to working with women. Her medical practice is focused on ensuring every patient enjoys personalised and compassionate care, while her passion for babies and delivering them into the world ensures each day is met with anticipation and a sense of wonder.

“Becoming a mum has changed my priorities… changed it so drastically that I am expanding my private practice to be closer to home, at Netcare Umhlanga Hospital. Every mum’s aim is to be close to their little ones during school and their extracurricular endeavours.”

As an obstetrician and gynaecologist, her professional services cover all aspects of the life cycle, from family planning and tubal ligations, to antenatal and foetal care as well as the management and treatment of HIV in pregnancy, As a woman in a demanding medical role it can be daunting menstrual disturbances, infertility, menopause and to balance family time with the rigours of work. “It is extremely cancer screening. She counts assisting in bringing new life difficult in any profession - in into the world among her mine, babies dictate my balance, as they have no timers greatest achievements. “My accomplishments are not and women go into labour any degrees or accolades, but are time; day or night,” says Dr www.mumsmail.com

18

“Being a mother is a blessing from the heavens above, a blessing from God. It’s the best thing I have ever become, the greatest love I have ever felt and the best part about being me,” concludes Dr Dhaver. Dr Dhaver has expanded her practice to now include Netcare Umhlanga Hospital and Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital. Mooimaak Makeovers:

Emmerentia de Roche Since her early teens, Emmerentia de Roche had always been self-conscious about her teeth- at least until she became a participant in Mooimaak, kykNET’s popular makeover show.

The dental wizard that is Dr JJ Serfontein gave Emmerentia a life-changing smile makeover, while the Skin Renewal team led by Dr Graham Duncombe and therapist Liza Schoeman used a series of treatments to turn back the hands of time. Tighten up! Collagen is the key to youthfullooking skin. Our bodies

produce a lot of it when we’re young, but this dramatically declines with age. This is why it’s important to invest in therapies that encourage our skin to make more of it. Laser Genesis is one such thing and was used to help firm Emmerentia’s face.

Needful things Another way the Skin Renewal team helped increase Emmerentia’s collagen supply was via Dermapen treatments. These involve running an electric needle across the skin to create micro ‘wounds’ that inspire a ‘repair’ process that’s essentially collagen synthesis.

This completely knife-free procedure involves injecting botulinum toxin to relax the look of wrinkles and dermal filler to plump areas that have lost volume. The latter helped subtly augment her lips, a good thing as she had beautiful new teeth to show off. “I’m now super happy to smile 24-7!” she said. “I feel like a new person!”

How to Teach Children to

Respect their Teachers

According to Cindy Glass, Owner and Founder of Step Up Education Centres, “Education is the root of success.

It is an essential tool which, when delivered and received correctly, could change the face of poverty and other challenges that face our country at this time. The benefits of a good education can never be underestimated and ensuring that learners respect their teachers is an essential and most necessary step if we are to make positive progress in learning”.

of respecting self and others. It is important to remember that our children are likely to do what we do, rather than what we say. Encourage respect of teachers by respecting your child’s teachers. Avoid teacher-bashing conversations and seek to find positive solutions to challenges that present themselves. There’s no need to spend a fortune at the bakery or supermarket! These lunch box recipes are easy to bake on the weekend for the school week ahead, and they’re a hit with fussy eaters.

Cheese and Ham Scrolls Ingredients • 2 sheets of puff pastry (defrosted) • 1 egg (lightly beaten) • 2 cups grated cheese • 100 g ham (deli - coarsely chopped) Method Preheat the oven to 200°C and line two large baking trays with baking paper.

Repeat with the remaining pastry, cheese and ham. Brush the tops lightly with the remaining egg, then transfer the trays into the oven to bake for 15-20 minutes or until the pastry turns golden.

Homemade Chocolate Truffles for Mother’s Day You can really impress your mom this Mother’s Day by making her some homemade chocolate truffles. the stove or in the microwave. Add the butter, if using, to the chocolate and pour the heavy cream evenly on top. Let the warm cream and chocolate sit for five minutes. Add the vanilla extract then stir until the chocolate has completely melted. Place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface (to avoid condensation) and refrigerate for one to two hours. Tip: Pour into a flat shallow dish, so the mixture evenly and quickly sets.

They sound really fancy, but we’ve found a super easy recipe at Sally’s Baking Addiction blog. Give it a try and let us know how it goes! These homemade chocolate truffles are extra creamy with the addition of butter. After mixing the ingredients together, let the mixture set in the refrigerator, then roll into balls. You can coat in your favourite toppings and add lots of fun flavours, too! Ingredients: • Two 4-ounce quality chocolate bars (226g), very finely chopped www.mumsmail.com

• 2/3 cup (160ml) heavy cream • Optional: 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened to room temperature • Optional: 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract • Toppings: unsweetened cocoa powder, sprinkles, crushed nuts, melted or tempered chocolate, coconut and chocolate sprinkles etc. Use your imagination and have fun!

Scoop the set truffle mixture into two teaspoon-sized mounds. For larger truffles, use tablespoon size mounds. Roll each into balls. This gets a little sticky, so Sally suggests you cover your hands in a bit of cocoa powder to reduce stickiness. Roll each truffle into toppings, if desired. Truffles taste best at room temperature! Cover tightly and store truffles at room temperature for 3 to 4 days or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Instructions: Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Set aside.

Place the truffles into a cellophane bag and tie a ribbon around the top, or into a special gift box with tissue paper.

Heat the heavy cream until it is simmering. You can heat it on

Science Experiments: Underwater Magic Sand Supplies needed: • Fine sand • Shallow disposable container • Fabric protector spray • Large glass bowl of water • Spoon or other utensils (optional) • Plastic container with lid

Science question: Can you make sand waterproof? Wet sand is heavy and messy! In this experiment, we will coat the sand with a hydrophobic layer to waterproof the sand.

The Experiment: In a well-ventilated area, spread the sand out in the disposable container. Spray the sand with a heavy coat of fabric protector spray. Shake the box a few times to make sure it’s thoroughly coated. Allow the sand to dry. Pour the dried sand into the

bowl of water. Play with the sand in the water, using spoons to dunk it in and out of the water. Store the sand in a lidded sealed container. The Outcome: The sand clumps together in the water. Why it worked: When you sprayed the sand with the fabric protector, you coated the grains of sand with a hydrophobic layer (or a layer that hates water). This causes the grains of sand to clump to each other in water.

Balloon-Powered Car The Experiment: Build a car out of LEGO bricks, but leave an opening in the back of your car for your balloon jet. Give your car a little test drive to see how fast and how far it can go. Blow up the balloon and insert it into the hole at the back of your toy car, so that the bottom of the balloon is facing the rear of the car. Put the car down, let go of the balloon and watch it go! Check the distance with the tape measure.

Science Question: How does propulsion work? Rockets lift off with a principle called propulsion (or thrust). In this experiment, we will explore propulsion making out own ‘jet’ from a balloon to power a LEGO The Outcome: car! The car went further when it was propelled by the balloon. Supplies needed: • LEGO bricks Why it worked: • Balloons When you let go of the balloon, • Small tape measure air rushed out of it, causing www.mumsmail.com

46

the car to move in the opposite direction. It is propulsion. Rockets work in a similar way. Exhaust gas comes out of the rocket’s engine so fast that it propels the rocket up. Variation: Try racing your car on different surfaces. Does it go faster or slower on a rug? On a pavement? On a hill? Did you know? On average, every single person on earth owns 86 LEGO bricks! Do you have more than your share? Source: The 101 Coolest Simple Science Experiments by Rachel Miller, Holly Homer & Jamie Harrington.

Readers’ Feedback Competition

SUNCOAST

Firstly, I want to thank the team for giving us an amazing issue month after month filled with wisdom. Most importantly, thank you for helping busy moms (and not forgetting dads) with ideas for entertaining our little pumpkins. We look forward to every issue and my girls get to choose their activity. My eldest, who is 17 years old, loves the baking section. Shownise Solomons. I am very happy to be reading Mum’s Mail and it provides me with good information like food, insights, recipes and events. It is the best magazine! Julius Naidoo. Thank you for an outstanding magazine. Leaving work and going to the gym, I thought it was a good idea for a Monday, only to find out there was load shedding. I picked up a few Mum’s Mails and headed home. Still no power - there were some construction workers who now could not work so I handed them some Mum’s Mails - next thing they were all sitting on the grass reading them. I read “Mom’s Time: Pamper Your Soul” and wondered how many mums I could help just with shopping and fetching children etc. Loved reading this amazing little book, it gave me so many ideas.
