Cover Stars
Meet the Cover Stars This month’s Cover Stars are best friends (from left to right), Gia, Phiwe, Cayla-Jaimes, Paige, Isabel and Evangelina (my very own little poppet!). They all go to the same local school in La Lucia and were treated to a special Pamper Party at Hey Gorgeous in The Crescent, Umhlanga. The day was captured beautifully by Penny Katz Photography. Isabel (12) loves running and often competes in the Umhlanga Park Run, her favourite animals are horses and wants to be a vet when she is older. Her super power is to read minds! Gia (12) enjoys dancing and drawing and tells me that her super power is to be able to fly… Evangelina (12) has a passion for dance and art. She would love to dance or sing for a career (dancing is her life) and her super power is to be a unicorn.

Paige (12) likes to play sport and loves dancing. She says it is too far in the future to know what she wants to do… but her super power is invisibility. Phiwe (12) also likes to dance and play sports but doesn’t know yet what she wants to do when she leaves school. Phiwe’s super power is to be able to shrink! Cayla-Jaimes (11) loves running and her super power is also to read minds. Ever since arriving from the UK, we have been greeted kindly and accepted with open arms - I especially love the fact that these young ladies naturally represent our ‘Rainbow Nation’ - it doesn’t matter what colour they are or where they are from, they treat each other equally and see past all of the issues that many adults seem unable to do. They are lucky to have each other and I hope that they remain friends for a very long time to come… Written by Victoria Arthur www.mumsmail.com

Chateau Gateaux
Chateau Gateaux Goes Green This year has been a big one for Chateau Gateaux – not only are they celebrating their 20th year, but they have also launched exciting new products such as their Chocolate Nostalgia, Baked Chocolate Cheesecake and Boston Brownie, plus they have an exciting new announcement! Chateau Gateaux has spent years working on a more eco-friendly box for their 24cm cakes, and finally they are proud to announce the launch of their new cardboard packaging! Up until now, they have used polystyrene packaging for their 24cm cakes and cases of individuals – mainly because it was the only product that could insulate the products sufficiently for long periods while being transported, and because of its strength. After years of brainstorming and countless tests, they finally managed to produce a cardboard equivalent that is even stronger and has good insulating properties!
– this took time and many tests. The polystyrene had so many benefits and they had to surpass that. So it took two and a half years to develop, but it was worth it! Malcolm explained that it was hard to know where to start when they decided to go green, so they decided to start with their most “ecologically offensive” product, the polystyrene. They are also working on finding eco-friendly straws, so watch this space!
The new box features double insulation and a coating that makes it waterproof, it is food friendly and recyclable. The double bottom provides added insulation and it is specially designed to stop air getting in. All these features are essential as these cakes are transported great distances and the cakes need to remain fresh. The box went through eight months of testing to ensure According to Malcolm Lyle, a director and that all these claims are true! co-owner of Chateau Gateaux, they first launched the 18cm box in cardboard when “Most organisations see the packaging they launched the cakes into stores as they problem as too big to fix, so they do nothing. needed a cheaper and greener option. LOOKING AFTER OUR ENVIRONMENT
In the interests of caring for the environment, Château Gâteaux has commenced a programme to eliminate as many environmentally damaging packaging material elements as is possible and practical. Eliminating polystyrene was the obvious first task given the large quantities used in packaging our products.
All polystyrene has now been replaced with 100% recyclable and biodegradable materials. Our new packaging has been designed and tested to deliver the equivalent insulation and protective properties of polystyrene.

Saint Giles
Inclusion is Within Everyone’s Ability
November is Disability Rights Awareness Month and International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on 3 December and aims to promote empowerment and help create real opportunities for people with disabilities. Empowerment involves investing in people – in jobs, health, nutrition, education, and social protection. When people are empowered they are better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, they become agents of change and can more readily embrace their civic responsibilities. Saint Giles Organisation for the Disabled in Durban is a non-profit dedicated to helping the disabled become empowered by providing multiple avenues of service and support to them. One such avenue, their work centre, currently has 79 disabled employees who pack, sort and assemble various products. Some of these workers were once shunned by their families and hidden away because of their disabilities. But, now that they have a job, they have pride and some are even sole bread winners in their homes.
say, “We have been working at Saint Giles 12 years, 2 years and 4 years, respectively. The best thing about working at Saint Giles is getting money to pay for food and for the kids. The grant does not last the whole month. So when the grant is finished the money from Saint Giles pays for what they need. It’s good to have a reason to get up in the mornings and some place to go. To be doing something with our lives. The people treat you differently if you have a job. When you are disabled they sometimes hide you away… but when you are disabled and have a job the people look up to you.” There are an estimated one billion people living with disabilities worldwide who face many barriers to inclusion in society. Saint Giles strives to help people with disabilities participate in public life, create stable democracies, active citizenship and reduce inequalities in society. Visit www.saintgiles.org.za.
Patrick (50) has been working at Saint Giles for 31 years. He says, “It makes me happy! The job I do and the people. I used to do other jobs but now I do stickers and I love it. Also the money. I like to buy clothes and spoil my Mom on special occasions, and I like to go visit my brother and sister in England.” Gloria (51) has been working at Saint Giles for 17 years. She says, “Getting a job at Saint Giles changed my life. Doing it for myself and not waiting for others. I paid for my sons to go to school. It has helped me so much… when my house burnt down… when my husband passed away. I am getting educated. The people are so good. I can trust them. I am so proud of Saint Giles. It is number one. There is no place better than this with what we do.” Elizabeth, Maureen and Alice had this to www.mumsmail.com

I don’t like these aerosols and they just fill the air with another more powerful and often equally unpleasant smell that seems to hang around forever. So my daily flirt with embarrassment seemed to be a fact of life I couldn’t escape from, that is until I discovered Fresh Flush.
Call: 083 357 6093

It’s such a neat idea - just spritz the toilet bowl water five to six times before you go to the toilet and Fresh Flush creates a barrier which traps smelly odours. You don’t need air freshener, so you save that cost, the Fresh Flush product has a pleasant but very gentle fragrance. Now I can confidently stride out of the toilet leaving barely a trace behind, what a relief on all counts! The home front is looking up too. The kids, who were merciless with their uninhibited, outraged condemnation of “Smelly Dad” now have nothing to complain about. Ah the quiet life… just don’t run out! We have a small, homely office at Mum’s Mail. This is lovely, but being the only man in an office full of ladies, I am very conscious of embarrassing toilet smells! So before Fresh Flush, my time in the toilet was extended. All windows were opened and I would stand there unseen, wafting air around. Then I would spray copious amounts of traditional air freshener and sneak out, hoping no unfortunate would follow me in!

Healthy Life
Dr Des@Home: Diabetes Awareness
Dr Deseré Ferreira & Assoc.
Diabetes develops when your body is unable to properly use and store glucose. In type 1 diabetes, the body stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables the body to use glucose, and daily insulin injections are needed to survive. This form of diabetes usually develops in children or young adults, but can occur at any age. Type 2 diabetes results when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin and/ or is unable to use insulin properly (insulin resistance). This form of diabetes usually occurs in people who are over 40, overweight, and have a family history of diabetes, although today it is increasingly occurring in younger people too. Oral medication is prescribed to help your body to recognise its own insulin. Uncontrolled sugar levels will have a long term effect on your health and might lead to a heart attack, stroke, blindness, nerve damage or amputation due to affected blood vessels. Diabetic patients need to have routine check-ups and their family members should also be aware of these symptoms: being very thirsty, frequent urination, increased hunger, blurry vision, irritability, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, frequent skin, bladder or gum infections, wounds that don’t heal and extreme unexplained fatigue. In some cases, there are no symptoms this happens at times with type 2 diabetes; people can live for years without knowing they have the disease. This form of diabetes comes on so gradually that symptoms may not even be recognised. It is important to speak to your GP about any of the above symptoms that you or your child may experience. It can be screened for with a simple finger prick procedure in your doctor’s rooms. By Dr Deseré Ferreira, 031 – 582 5301. www.mumsmail.com

Support for New Mums
A new baby is considered to be a joyous time for a mother, often referred to as “the most wonderful experience in any woman’s life...”
Except that this does not ring true for every mum. Raging hormones, sleep deprivation and a feeling of being held hostage by a tiny crying human can cause some “baby blues” in women after their baby’s birth, but Perinatal Distress (PND) is a more serious condition. National CPR Week If a member of your family stopped breathing, would you know how to perform CPR on them? National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Week is from 4 to 10 November and aims to raise awareness about the importance of learning CPR. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is an emergency procedure. It is performed in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest. The Resuscitation Council of South Africa offers courses in CPR for members of the public, family members, relatives and friends of adults and children at risk for sudden death. It is ideal for laypersons with no prior medical knowledge who want to learn life-saving rescue skills for their loved ones.
primary aim is to foster and co-ordinate the practice and teaching of resuscitation, and to promote uniformity and standardisation of resuscitation techniques. Objectives of the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa are: • To gather and collate as much scientific information regarding resuscitation techniques from as wide a variety of sources as possible, and to disseminate this information to all interested parties. • To provide an advisory and resource service regarding techniques, equipment, teaching methods and teaching aids. • To foster research into methods of practice and teaching of resuscitation. • To pursue the development of standards for resuscitation equipment and to provide simplicity and uniformity in techniques and terminology regarding resuscitation.

Monthly treatments that hydrate and rejuvenate the skin are highly beneficial to keep the skin healthy. A light, superficial skin peel can maintain that beautiful glow in your 20s. In your 30s to 40s besides a monthly facial, medical aesthetic treatments such as Botox® to prevent lines and wrinkles and dermal fillers to restore volume loss are also valuable to address the first signs of skin aging.
Shop 11 Maytime Centre, Kloof
In your 50s and up, light to medium depth peels are needed to address skin aging as well as fine and deep lines. Monthly to bi-monthly treatments, focusing on skin resurfacing, pigmentation and rejuvenation are highly recommended to maintain flawless skin. Other treatments such as skin needling and medical aesthetic treatments such as Redermalisation, Botox®, Dermal Fillers and Dermal Threads are also helpful to restore and maintain a youthful look and a beautiful, glowing skin. Use a white or light eyeliner to really make your eyes pop (or hide how tired you are). If you accidentally purchase a foundation that’s too dark, adding a bit of moisturizer to your mix can help lighten it. To get the most out of your mascara, stick in your bra for a few minutes to warm it up. It’ll work magic on your lashes and curl so much better. Use the one and done philosophy: If you’ve only got a short amount of time (or energy), either play up your eyes or your lips, not both. And if you don’t feel like going crazy with your eyes, a quick comb of an eyebrow brush, and a swipe of mascara can usually do the trick. Want to fight puffiness? Sleeping propped up on two pillows instead of one can help reduce puffiness by helping drain fluid from your face. Want your glossy lipstick to have a matte look without buying a new tube? Dab on some concealer before applying. It’ll make it matte just like that, and it’ll also keep your lipstick on longer. Add a little bit of cornstarch to a glossy polish to give a matte finish. Make dry shampoo your BFF for those in between forget-it-I’m-hitting-snooze-again days.

Steps for Choosing a Pre-School
Trudie Gilmore, Assistant General Manager at ADvTECH Junior Colleges, says there are few things that instill more anxiety and apprehension in parents than the task of finding the right school for their child’s first foray into education.
She advises parents to structure their search as follows: Start your search at least one school year prior to attending, and note that many schools take applications as early as just after a child’s birth. Attend an open day or expo to hear about the philosophy, admission process and more, and then submit the application and registration fee. You can view the school while classes are in session, and they recommend that you bring your child to spend time in the classroom. Know how often and how long you’d like your child to attend. Most schools should offer half-day and full-day programmes. Gilmore says parents should check for the following to ensure that a pre-school programme is well-run: • Assess the quality
of children’s relationships with the staff. Pay close attention to the language used in the classroom and the friendliness of the staff. • View a few different classrooms to see how the teachers interact with the children. • Home-to-school connections are important. Preschools that have high family involvement are often the schools with the strongest programmes. When families are involved, children do better, teachers feel supported and everyone works together for the children’s learning and development. • High-quality preschools have structure: They follow a specific philosophy or model and have specific guidelines for addressing challenging behaviour. • Discipline policies should emphasise positive approaches to teaching children new skills and proactive strategies for behaviour management such as classroom rules, routines and socialemotional lessons or curriculum. Diet Coke and Mentos Eruption
One of the most popular experiments of modern times is the Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser. This experiment is loads of fun and sure to amaze your friends and family. What you’ll need: • Large bottle of Diet Coke • About half a pack of Mentos • Geyser tube (optional but makes things much easier)
at the same time (about half the pack is a good amount). • Time for the fun part - drop the Mentos into the Diet Coke and run like mad! If you’ve done it properly a huge geyser of Diet Coke should come flying out of the bottle, it’s a very impressive sight. The record is about 9 metres high! What’s happening? Although there are a few different theories about how this experiment works, the most favoured reason is because of the combination of carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the little dimples found on Mentos candy pieces, which dramatically increases the surface area and allows a huge amount of bubbles to form.
Instructions: • Make sure you are doing this experiment in a place where you won’t get in trouble for getting Diet Coke everywhere. Outside on some grass is perfect; please don’t try this one in your family lounge!! • Stand the Diet Coke upright and unscrew the lid. Put some sort of funnel or tube on top of it so you can drop the Mentos in

Drink Rooibos Tea to Improve Concentration During Exams
HOPE ENRICHMENT LEARNING PROGRAMME
Morningside/Berea • One-on-one homework supervision • Guidance & support for assessments/ projects • Remedial support for English & Maths • Gr 1 - 7 all subjects
Coffee and energy drinks are usually the go-to beverages for high school learners and students to help them cram for finals during the stressful months of October and November, but science suggests they drink rooibos tea as an alternative to help them stay on top of their “A” game. Several studies point to rooibos tea’s ability to protect healthy cells from damage caused by free radicals and that its high level of antioxidants could reduce the effects of oxidative stress, which learners and students typically experience in the lead up to and during end-of-year exams.

Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council explains that the brain appears to be especially susceptible to excessive oxidative stress, because of its high demand for oxygen. While consuming small amounts of caffeine daily is not harmful, drinking too much could prove dangerous and lead to a physical dependence since it is highly addictive. The temporary boost of energy it gives you may also keep you awake for longer and lead to unwanted fatigue on exam day. Du Toit recommends six cups of rooibos tea a day for optimal replenishing of critical antioxidants. “Rooibos tea has no side-effects and contains some of the strongest and most unique antioxidants in the plant kingdom, including aspalathin and nothofagin. Students should make the most of this natural energy drink, which is tasty, affordable and can be enjoyed hot or cold.” Rooibos ice-lollies: By pouring some Rooibos iced tea into popsicle containers or ice-cube trays and freezing it, you can also enjoy it as a refreshing treat when you get the munchies while you’re studying. Art supplies A little pack of felt tips, a small colouring book, a mini art gift set - anything artistic is great for children, who can take this home and then get stuck in on a rainy ‘I’m bored’ Sunday. Grow your own plants A packet of seeds, or a ‘grow your own plant’ kit from the supermarket, is a fun activity for your guests to take away with them. Unlike traditional party bag fillers, it’s a useful gift that your guest is going to see the benefits of. This one is better for older children. Source: www.netmums.com. www.mumsmail.com

Reptile Party Time
Reptile Party Time is celebrating six incredible years of making parties come ALIVE across KZN by offering unique demonstrations that are safe, educational and FUN! Over the years their colourful non venomous snakes, gentle pythons, lizards and creepy crawlies have captivated the minds and imaginations of kids of all ages as they became part of an exciting, handson animal experience like no other! Although they offer parents various packages and optional add-ons to suit their individual budget and entertainment requirements, all of their packages share a common goal: to make your child feel special and create a lasting happy memory of the day they partied on the WILD SIDE! Here’s what parents had to say about their service: “Beyond grateful to Dean for making my child laugh until he cried! Such was the joy at experiencing so many crazy creatures up close. To say that the party was a hit for the birthday boy is an understatement! Keeping 25 six year olds engaged for an hour is NO easy task, yet they were enthralled from beginning to end. What a hit!” - Shelley McLean. “What fun my son and the other kids had today at his 3rd birthday party. Thanks so much to Dean and team, I highly recommend them what an amazing experience!” - Kendal Swart.

Paper Strip Spider Web Craft Are you looking for a friendly spider craft to keep the kids e n te r ta i n e d ? Look no further! This Paper Strip Spider Web Craft is fun for kids of all ages. It’s easy enough to make in a classroom or day care setting and helps develop fine-motor skills.
1 Old Main Road | Burnedale Place | Umhlali S29o28.176 E031o13.550 (Opposite Karibu Farm) 032 - 947 0133 (8.30am - 4:30pm)
www.burnedale.co.za | www.facebook.com/burnedale.com
To make this creepy-cute craft you will need: • Wooden craft sticks • White computer or construction paper • Black construction paper or craft foam • Googly eyes • Glue • Scissors After gathering supplies, invite children to glue a base for their spider’s web with craft sticks. Kids can make any shape they want including a right angle, a square, a triangle, or a criss-cross. While their shapes are drying, children can use scissors to cut long strips of paper. The thinner they cut the strips, the more intricate a spider web pattern they will be able to make. Next, children can begin to glue the strips of paper to their craft sticks. Last, kids can use their scissors to cut out a circle and eight small strips of black paper for their spider’s body. Invite children to glue down the black papers to create the shape of a spider. Silly googly eyes make this spider craft come alive. Have fun! Source: www.kidsactivitiesblog.com www.mumsmail.com
