Editor’s Life And it’s a wrap! After an exhausting few months of manic planning, collecting, co-ordinating and executing, our 10th Annual Carnival Kaleidoscope High Tea in Association with The Sunflower Fund took place on 28 August at the Greyville Convention Centre. This was our biggest event yet, with close on 800 guests, who went all out to dress up for the theme in feather boas, masks and festive colours. Karen Monk-Klijnstra was the MC, Lisa Bobbert was the keynote speaker, entertainment was provided by the Glitter Girls as well as stilt walkers, dancers, face painters and aerial acrobats, resulting in the event being a huge success.

Chantelle was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer at the age of 33, after finding a lump in her right breast. “It is an aggressive, invasive type of cancer so it spread quickly within the breast, but luckily it hadn’t spread to other organs, only the lymph glands,” explained Chantelle. In the past four months, Chantelle has had four chemotherapy sessions, and has recently had surgery to have a single mastectomy. She will still need 12 chemotherapy sessions, followed by radiation and then surgery to insert implants. “I have met a lot of new people along the way, learned new things and experienced new friendships and compassion from people!” Chantelle advises everyone to go for check-ups regularly. “Don’t ignore any undiagnosed lumps/bumps, listen to your body and enjoy the roses while they are good!” To those who are going through www.mumsmail.com

The Fair That Cares

This year’s Christmas Country Fair will take place on Wednesday and Thursday 28 and 29 October at Collisheen Estate, inland from Ballito.

will be back, but some exciting new vendors will participate for the first time. These include a new clothing line from Ekamu, jewellery, ceramics and – something for the boys – knife sets. A dedicated foodie area where light lunches and snacks will be served will be situated in Collisheen’s beautiful garden. Vegans, vegetarians, gluten intolerants and “banters” will also be catered for. For the sweet tooth there will be offerings from The Biscuitry and Lemon Canary, not to forget the delectable Christmas cakes and puddings for which the Christmas Fair Fund bakers are famous. A workshop focusing on innovative Christmas décor and Christmas cooking will be an added bonus to a fun morning of Christmas shopping. The cost of the workshop is R300 per person and must be booked in advance.

Since the first Christmas Fair 63 years ago in the (then) Stanger town hall, the event has grown into one of the biggest Christmas markets in KZN. More than 85 stall holders will once again offer outstanding products with the emphasis on organically produced, natural and hand crafted merchandise. Have Fun in The Kitchen With Your Kids! During the recent school holidays, Pheka ran some fun children’s cooking classes. They learnt to make pizzas from scratch, homemade burgers with potato wedges, sausage rolls, chocolate cake, custard powder biscuits and bow tie pasta salad! A lot of fun was had! Take 30 minutes next weekend and spend some time with your kids in the kitchen – you will be surprised the reward it brings to them (and to you when you are presented with something prepared by your children)! Here’s an easy recipe to make together: Chocolate Cake Ingredients: • 1 cup castor sugar • 2 eggs • 1 cup selfraising flour • ¼ cup cocoa powder • ½ cup milk • 125g butter or margarine Icing: • 2 cups icing sugar • 150g soft butter • 2 tablespoon cocoa • ½ teaspoon vanilla essence • 1 tablespoon milk

Method: Heat up oven to 180˚C. Choose a round cake tin (approx. 20cm) and spray with Spray and Cook. Mix the castor sugar, flour and cocoa. Make sure you sieve the cocoa and flour together and add the rest of the ingredients. Beat with an electric beater on medium speed until all mixed well. Pour into tin. Bake for about 35 to 40 minutes. Let it rest for five minutes and then turn out onto cooling rack to cool. To make the icing, sieve the icing sugar and cocoa and then add the milk, vanilla essence and soft butter. Beat together with the electric beater until all smooth and creamy. When the cake is cooled, ice carefully and decorate. Source: Danielle du Toit, Pheka, www.pheka.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Get Out of Credit Card Debt Get help from a professional: If you find that you can’t afford your minimum monthly repayments, it can be hard to get out of debt. Debt review can help you get a handle on your finances so Here are DebtSafe’s tips to get out of credit that you meet your financial commitments card debt: for all the debt you owe. Are you relying on your very patient credit card to get you through each month? If your answer is yes, you seriously need to have a look at your spending habits!

Stop using your cards: The best way to stop using your credit card is to cut it in half and throw it in the trash. A credit card that is still usable will get used, and all the payments made to reduce the balance can be nullified in seconds. Pay the minimum amount you currently owe every month: As you pay the minimum amount you owe each month, not only will your overall balance be reduced, but your minimum repayment will as well – but this only applies when you don’t use your cards. If you find that you have extra cash in a month, resist the urge to spend it and rather put it towards reducing your credit card balance.

Use other savings to repay credit card debt: With the exception of retirement annuities, consider withdrawing money from an extra savings account (not your emergency fund) to help clear or reduce your outstanding credit card debt. Although you won’t have those savings at your disposal after you’ve withdrawn the money, this will save you money in the long run.

Beautiful Solutions for your Windows Whether you’re looking for privacy, style, or both, it can be a daunting task to choose window treatments. Should you head off to a specialty blind store, your local home centre, or shop online? How formal should you go, or how sheer? And how come your stylish friends always seem to get it right? And then there is the eternal question of whether to go for curtains or blinds/ shutters?

“Windows are a great focal point in a room and the treatment you choose should be both decorative and functional,” says Jenny. “Thankfully, we’ve come a long way from the days of the mini aluminium venetian blind. Now you can dress up a room in so many different ways without it costing an arm and a leg.”

Jenny from Designer Blinds and Floors Durban will put you on the right track. She operates from a ‘mobile showroom’ and is able to visit your home or office to give you a free consultation to take the guesswork out of shopping and to provide you with practical and beautiful solutions for your windows. Beneficiary Nomination When nominating beneficiaries for your will, there are a number of important factors to consider.

Subscribe to our e-newsletter on www. mumsmail. com

Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act 24 of 1956 (PFA) declares that the trustees of your retirement fund are committed to ensure that your dependants are beneficiaries of your retirement savings upon your death. The PFA allows that even your parents, a previous spouse or children born out of wedlock may be included in the definition of a dependant and may be eligible to benefits from your retirement funds. The needs of your parents, your previous spouse, or children born out of wedlock, may overrule your decisions on how your retirement savings should be distributed. It is the task of the trustees of your retirement fund to determine who your dependants are and how much each dependant should benefit.

IT’S TIME TO SPRING CLEAN!

Minors The law prevents insurance companies from distributing the proceeds of a policy directly to a child who is under 18 years of age. The funds due to a minor beneficiary must be paid into a trust so that the child will one day benefit from these funds when they are old enough. The trustees administer the trust together with the legal guardian of the minor. If you want the proceeds of your policy to help with the upbringing of your child, then a guardian must be selected to look after the child until they are no longer a minor. If you do not want the money to be looked after by a trust you need to name a responsible adult to be the beneficiary. What is a Cochlear Implant? A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlear) to provide sound signals to the brain.

3 Berkeley Crescent Durban North Tel: 031 563 1665 info@rtortho.co.za www.rtortho.co.za

Cochlear implants have been used for more than 35 years with great success, initially in children born without hearing and later in adults. How does a cochlear implant work? Normally, sound waves travel in the air and are collected by the outer ear to cause tiny vibrations of the ear drum and middle ear bones or ossicles. The sound is then transferred into the inner ear or cochlear, which is filled with fluid and millions of microscopic hair cells that pick up the vibrations and then transfer the information to the brain via the hearing nerve.

A hearing aid amplifies the sound wave to the inner ear whereas a cochlear implant is placed directly into the cochlear, when the hair cells are no longer working, to directly stimulate the hearing nerve and in turn, pass the electrical information to the brain where it can be interpreted as sound or speech. A cochlear implant takes advantage of how smart and flexible the human brain can be in adapting to the new ‘electronic’ hearing but if done early, can have wonderful results. To determine if a person is a candidate for a cochlear implant, a comprehensive evaluation will be conducted by a team of experts at the Durban Cochlear Implant Programme. The Surgical Screening Clinic

Screen Today For a Better Tomorrow What is screening? Certain diseases are more prevalent in communities due to multifactorial risks, some inherited and some acquired, during an individual’s life-time. Each person’s overall risk for certain diseases is individualised and unique. Certain cancers like breast, colon, stomach and oesophageal cancers etc. are screened according to established guidelines. Screening can be done using a clinical assessment, endoscopic procedures, radiological investigations, tumour markers (blood test) and genetic markers. One needs to be assessed by a trained clinician to ensure that you are investigated appropriately, according to recommended guidelines, and that the findings are interpreted correctly. The fact is that many benign diseases share a symptom profile and a clinical profile with nonbenign diseases. This overlap in symptoms is responsible for delays in diagnosis and sometimes for non-ideal management.

with The Surgical Screening Clinic, is a specialised clinical diagnostic centre aimed at patients who require investigations for their breast and gastro-intestinal symptoms. They also cover a number of general surgical conditions, including soft tissue masses. This is the first clinical unit to be established outside of a hospital setting offering specialised care from experienced surgeons/clinicians. Patients attending the Durban Breast Clinic can be seen, risk stratified, investigated with ultrasound, biopsied, counselled and educated in their safe and comfortable environment. Their aim is to provide a dedicated service related to all aspects of breast diseases. All medical aids are welcome, with reduced or copayments sometimes necessary. Dr Rotham Dental Clinic Dr Rotham is a family dentist who loves working with children. He specialises in teeth cleaning, whitening, normal and wisdom extractions, root canals, crowns or capping, dentures, dental implants and Botox and fillers. He is also a dental surgeon and performs certain procedures in theatre. Dr Rotham offers some answers to commonly asked questions about oral health. Should you visit your dentist annually or every six months? He recommends adults visit every six months and children every school holiday (they generally eat more sweets, making them prone to cavities). Although cavities tend to decrease with age, periodontal (gum and bone) diseases do increase. What are the worst culprits for causing bad breath? Bad breath (halitosis) is usually simply from not visiting a dentist. Calculus, plaque, gingivitis (poor oral hygiene), rotten teeth and not drinking enough water are

also the main culprits for halitosis. How important is flossing, really? It’s vitally important. Only floss the teeth you want to keep! What is a healthy mouth? A healthy mouth is squeaky clean teeth and healthy gums (that do not bleed). Does genetics play a part in whether you have good teeth or bad teeth? Genetics may contribute to the anatomy (look) of your teeth, but it all boils down to good oral care and diet. Is a hard toothbrush better that a soft one? No. Always use a soft brush and brush from the gum line to biting surface of teeth. Never scrub your teeth by brushing horizontally. An electric toothbrush is recommended to prevent incorrect brushing. Contact Dr Rotham on 031 – 566 2493, 072 122 7276 (emergency), drrotham@ourdentist.co.za, or visit www.implants.co.za. 325 Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Umhlanga Ridge.

About Skin Cancer

SPECIALIST DERMATOLOGIST

There are two broad categories of skin cancer Dr Mohamed F. Sacoor MbChB (Natal). FC Derm (SA) – non-melanoma (epidermal) skin cancer • General dermatology and melanoma skin cancer. Epidermal skin • Paediatric dermatology • Mole screening cancer originates from the superficial layers • Dermatology surgery of the skin whilst malignant melanoma - botox & fillers originates from the pigment producing • Liquid facelifts • Phototherapy cells called melanocytes. Non-melanoma • Skin cancer screening skin cancer includes solar keratosis (sun Suite G07 Musgrave Park, Musgrave Road, Durban spots), squamous cell carcinoma and basal 18 Tel: 031 - 201 3322/97 info@doctorskin.co.za cell carcinoma. Glandular cancers called www.doctorskin.co.za lymphoma can also start in the skin. How does skin cancer present itself? Epidermal skin cancer can present as a scaly red spots, a lump that bleeds or as a nonhealing ulcer/sore. Melanoma skin cancer can arise within a preceding mole that has undergone a change in shape or colour. Lymphoma can present as dry patches, lumps or ulcers. Causes: Ultraviolet radiation exposure from sunlight or tanning beds is the main cause of most skin cancer. Fair skinned individuals with light hair and eyes, persons with multiple moles and people with a family history of skin cancer are at highest risk. Treatment: If treated early, most types of skin cancer can be cured. Treatment of skin cancer can be done surgically or in some cases various non-surgical methods are available that can avoid unnecessary scars. Untreated, melanoma can be fatal. Prevention: The regular use of high protection sunscreens reduces the likelihood of developing skin cancer. Persons at risk need regular skin checks by a dermatologist to identify and treat early or precancerous lesions. If you have multiple moles these need to be checked with a mole scanning device to detect any early and subtle changes as this may suggest a risk of melanoma developing. Win R5 000 and get ready for Summer Fatimah Jadwat has worked in both a multinational franchise gym and two private gyms. She has academic training in exercise science, nutrition, fitness assessment and exercise programming. She trains the housewife, the business woman, the student and the professional athlete. “I’ve seen both sides of the coin, training in private and franchise gyms. Each experience has left me a better, more knowledgeable trainer equipped with the ability and skills to maximise your potential. You do not need a personal trainer permanently. You need one long enough to learn nutritional tactics, various fitness principles, equipment technologies and exercise techniques required to become reasonably self-sufficient and to achieve noticeable results. My aim is to empower you with the knowledge and know-how to become the best version of yourself!” said Fatimah.

Fatimah’s areas of expertise include diabetes management, body transformation (weight loss/gain and toning), kids’ development, pre and post-natal and sports conditioning. Her eight week Gold Series Challenge offers: • Small groups of four to six people maximum. • Three time slots per day/ three times a week. • Meal plans and assessments. • Independent judges. “My goal in our fitness programme is to turn you into your own personal trainer. Only you are guaranteed to be with you for the rest of your life. Only you would be able to do the work to get the result. My job is simple – inspire, motivate and educate. I won’t teach you how to use a particular machine. I will teach you how to exercise properly to achieve goals, rehabilitate injuries and prevent future injuries,” said Fatimah.

Relax With a Bit of Face Reflexology When we need to relax, the closest thing is our face and just a few minutes a day can alleviate a lot of the stress we feel. • Begin with washing your hands and face. • Take a good quality oil like the Sh’Zen PhytoExquisites Facial Essence with neroli, jasmine and rose, which rejuvenates and revives the skin as well as calms the body. • Warm the oil in your hands and then apply to the face. • Tap across your forehead, down your face and end by slapping along the jaw line – repeat three times. • Squeeze both your eyebrows with the thumbs and index fingers, starting at the nose – squeeze the entire length of the brow. Repeat three times. • Press the middle of the cheeks with two fingers of each hand and release. Repeat three times. • Press the sides of the eyes (hollow area) on both sides of the forehead with your middle finger and hold and release – repeat three times. • Then place both cupped palms over the eyes to create total darkness, release and repeat three times. • Finally, cup your whole face with both hands, leaving the nose open. Breathe in through your nose and out of the mouth. Repeat three times and release. • Shake hands to work out. • Have a glass of water.

Is the Sugar in Formula Safe for your Baby?

baby, you would want lactose to be listed first and sucrose not to even to be on the list (lactose is good and sucrose is bad).

Did you know that infant formula contains Visit the ‘Baby Yum Yum SA’ Facebook sugar and that this could have an impact on page for more information and your baby’s health? Not all sugars are bad discussions on formula and nutrition. though, and it’s important to understand the difference between what is meant by WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has three ‘sugars’ and carbohydrates. The basics to Veratemp Non-Contact Thermometres remember around ‘sugars’ for nutrition is to give away, courtesy of BabyYumYum. that there are simple carbohydrates (the Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter. sugars) and complex carbohydrates (the fibres and starches). Both formula milk and breast milk contain “sugars”. The primary carbohydrate found in breastmilk is lactose, which is not only an important source of energy, but also has a vital role to play in the absorption of other micronutrients such as calcium. Lactose also has a prebiotic function, which improves the microflora in the infant’s gut which has been shown to reduce allergy risks and strengthen infants’ immune systems. So parents shouldn’t be concerned whether formula contains sugar, but rather the type of simple carbohydrates it contains and whether a product naturally contains these sugars (like with lactose) or whether they are added to a product. Read the ingredients list to find out which ‘sugars’ the formula predominantly contains. Ingredients should be listed in descending order, so the first ingredient listed is the most prevalent in the product. As a parent who wants the best for your

Don’t be Chicken this Pox Season Itching, scratching, blisters, grumpy and sore are often the first thoughts that come to mind when we hear the word ‘chickenpox’. Enough to make mums cringe, and unfortunately this is the time of year when the virus seems to be most prominent. Even those children who have been vaccinated can get mild cases of the chickenpox virus. It is vital that all efforts are made not to scratch – but try telling that to a young child! PoxClin CoolMousse has been developed to provide relief from the itching and burning sensations that are most commonly associated with the chickenpox virus. It calms and cools whilst caring for the skin. The key ingredient is aloe extract, which helps soothe the skin as well as protect the skin from harmful bacteria. PoxClin CoolMousse is easy to apply. It is lightweight and leaves no excess residue. One of the beauties of PoxClin is that it can be applied as often as is needed. The more frequently it is applied, the more relief it provides and the less scratching occurs. However, do not use continuously for more than 30 days. It does not need to be kept in the fridge, but it does enhance the cooling and soothing effect. Less scratching reduces the risk of rupturing blisters and lessens the chance of secondary infections and scarring. PoxClin CoolMousse has no known sideeffects or interference with other medication and is available at all leading pharmacies.

Pop Goes the Spaza!

Tennis School • Private & Group Coaching • Beginners, Intermediate & Advanced • Pre-school Programme 4 - 5 Year Olds

Wart and Fish has created a great little Spaza-style shopping experience for children at their pop-up shop in Windermere Centre. Did you know that ‘Spaza’ is a recognised slang word meaning ‘a trading store in a rural area’? What better way to bring the concept of a country store, with a pop-up shop, to the city! Pop-ups are such fun and bring new ideas and exciting goodies to tempt the best of shoppers.

Durban North 083 253 7714 031 - 563 3208

The Wart and Fish Trading Store is an eclectic assortment of colourful, interesting products that are slightly quirky but practical too. The pop-up shop has Melissa and Doug educational toys, puzzles and games for the discerning mom looking for quality items made of wood and made to last. There are some awesome books supplied by Books2You, creatively displayed in a story corner for the younger readers. Wart and Fish has sourced some really great recycled items from entrepreneurs and has acquired some gorgeous wire and board aeroplanes which have added colour and something to delight the boys. They found a few other Spaza-style items like recycled plastic picnic mats (ideal for the beach) and brooms, buckets and basins – a must at any Spaza shop! Be sure to look for your little wire bicycle-man. They are keeping their eyes wide open for other interesting ‘local is lekker’ items. Visit ‘the best little Spaza shop’ at Windermere Centre. Raising Superheroes Raising Superheroes, the follow-up title to The Real Meal Revolution, is a “real food” cookbook that provides parents with the right dietary and nutritional advice and recipes to raise the healthiest, brightest kids possible. The Real Meal Revolution was all about taking on the global obesity epidemic with a revolutionary approach to eating. It challenged ingrained beliefs, it sold (and still sells) in record-breaking numbers throughout South Africa, and it changed people’s lives. With Raising Superheroes the authors have now set out to revolutionise the way we feed our children. It’s time, they believe, to challenge the kids’ food industry and our old assumptions; it’s time to give our children the best nutrition possible, and the best start in life. Raising Superheroes is not a Banting cookbook, and it doesn’t offer no-carb eating for kids. But – in advocating lowsugar, low refined-carb, “real” food eating – it is the Real Meal Revolution’s next step towards changing the world (there will be more!) About the authors: Professor Tim Noakes is currently the most high-profile scientist in South Africa, and the figurehead of the original Real Meal Revolution. Jonno Proudfoot is a food expert, entrepreneur and adventurer, and the driving force behind the brand. Bridget Surtees is a registered dietician specialising in paediatric nutrition, with many years’ experience in major London and Sydney hospitals. The Iconic Durban Ice Arena is Back!

C o me to

For the past 20 months, the doors of the Durban Ice Rink have been closed as renovations to restore it to its former glory have been underway, and 24 September saw the new and improved Durban Ice Arena open its doors. So what can you expect from this newly polished gem? Its offerings extend far beyond that of just ice skating, but include great entertainment offerings, tantalising cuisine and a little something for everyone. Owner Sastri Ramiah has a dedication to the development of the ice-skating sport, and through skating aids such as Bobby Seal and Penny the Penguin, believes that many more children may take to the ice, and hopefully will enter the learn-toskate programmes that the arena will be launching in 2016. Added to this, there will also be a skate shop, which will provide a retail outlet for ice-skates, figure skating dresses, ice-hockey skates and equipment and a range of other ice-skating related items. The new and improved venue includes a host of private venue areas, ideal for corporate events, team building and special events, such as birthday parties and the like, all overlooking the ice surface below, and flanked by the arena’s own restaurant, providing a range of food and beverage offerings. Every last detail of this new and exciting venue has been well thought out, from the kiddies’ birthday party packages to the DJ sessions that will take place on a Saturday night, to the complimentary shuttle service from nearby additional parking areas, making the opening of the Durban Ice Arena something to talk about! Fad Diets Are Destroying Us: Fat Free, Carb Free and the Lies We Keep Telling Ourselves There has never been as much nutritional information available. There has also never been as much confusion about a healthy diet! What works for you does not necessarily work for others. Kerry Hillermann, a registered dietician, aims to keep it simple, to cut through the confusion of nutritional trends or fads and to highlight what is right for you, to provide an effective option for your body to function at its optimal level. Your nutritional plan should not only account for your individual needs but it should also include meals structured in such a way that considers your tastes as well as your lifestyle. This will make it more sustainable for you. Have you considered your diet as well as the diet of your family? 1) Are you feeding your family healthy meals? 2) Is your child getting a balanced diet for their age? 3) Are you acquiring all the nutrients that your body needs from your diet? 4) If you and/or your family have food intolerances or allergies are you making sure that you are getting the necessary nutrients from other food sources? 5) Do you feel satisfied for three to four hours after you have eaten a meal? To eat is necessary… to eat intelligently requires the correct guidance. From nutritional counselling and personalised nutrition and lifestyle plans, right through to Vitality nutrition consultations and so much more - Kerry can assist you, on or off site from her practice, across all age groups. Does Your Child Use an iPad?

Eye Care Awareness Month is observed from 21 September to 18 October and as such, Nugent Family Optometrists offer some tips for protecting your children’s eyes.

There are coatings that can protect your eyes by selectively filtering out the harmful light and allowing the good light through. The immediate benefits are preserving your overall wellbeing by allowing the essential visible light, including healthy blue light which improves sleep/wake cycles, mood and memory and improved vision. The lifelong benefit of protecting your eyes is reducing the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.

With so many schools switching over to tablets and iPads, Glenn Nugent says it is important to be informed about a phenomenon called ‘blue light’. There is good and bad blue light. Light, including healthy blue light, plays an important role in your everyday life. Kumon

Discover the Joy of Learning

Educating children is becoming more complex. Children are growing up in a technological, visual and fast moving environment and sometimes lack the concentration and self-discipline necessary for effective learning. Children expect learning and consolidation to be instantaneous and when problems occur they can sometimes lose confidence in their abilities. Some students, despite having the ability to master new concepts, find themselves falling behind because they lack the basic skills necessary to assimilate new information. Sometimes the students in this situation can develop poor attitudes towards their studies. Often students lose out on grasping those basic skills at an early age and therefore their performance deteriorates annually. Kumon is not a replacement for work done at school. This is a method of learning that complements and supplements the school curriculum

and assists students to develop the basic skills needed for successful learning, giving children the opportunity and the time needed to master concepts before moving on. Kumon’s “back-to-basics” approach allows the students, regardless of age and ability, to go back to where his/her problems first started, fill in those gaps, and move back towards curriculum level at a steady pace, and in many cases enables children to study above their grade level confidently. There should be no gaps in a student’s knowledge that could hamper their progress at a later stage. By giving students a solid understanding of the fundamentals, the Maths and the English programmes enhance concentration, develop good study habits, increase self-confidence, and best of all, help children experience a sense of achievement every day. They discover the joy of learning.

Glamorous and Gruesome Halloween Party A ‘Posh’ Halloween party? Yes, you heard right. With the right mix of gruesome and glamorous elements, your guests are sure to have a blast! Here’s how: • Create invitations with fabulous, spooky elements – think glittery ghosts and sparkly spider webs. • Dress the table with a shimmery table cloth, along with a gorgeous silver/crystal candelabra with “melting” candles in a ‘pop’ colour – this can be used as the centrepiece for the table, with faux spider webs and pearl strings hanging down – think elegantly evil! Have a backdrop with a similar look and feel printed, along with props for a fun photo-booth. • A candy table is always a big hit with guests, and provides them with something delicious to take home afterwards. Fill various jars with tricks and treats matching your ‘pop’ colour, adding themed labels. Designer cobweb cookies will go down well, too! Think of creative packaging for the guests to fill with the candy. • Set up a ‘spiked’ lemonade station, with jam jars as drinking glasses and colour paper straws to match your ‘pop’ colour. Add a gruesome gummy eyeball or two to each jar. Some eerie background tunes will set the mood – have a glamorously gruesome time!

Readers’ Life Mum’s Mail had some great feedback from readers who attended the Carnival Kaleidoscope High Tea. ● Love the new venue and the ample parking was an added bonus. It was a perfect day – from the weather, entertainment and the exquisite outfits, to the spoils galore in the goodie bags and the divine spread on the tables! I loved the caramel popcorn, macaroons and choc eclairs. The cherry on top was the decadent Chateau Gateaux red velvet cake. Can’t wait for next year’s high tea. Fatima Randeree-Thandar. ● A huge congratulations on a successful high tea! The function was beautiful and so wonderfully put together – you have a real talent and eye for beauty! A big thank you for allowing Hirsch’s to be a part of the event. Bianca Hauser. ● Wow, what an amazing event the Mum’s Mail High Tea was! Hats off to you and your team. Twinkle Naiker. ● Thank you to all involved for a fantastic high tea. You really pulled out all the stops and it was marvellous. I really admire you all for the effort and thought that goes into organising such a “grand scale” function – rather you than me! Rose McDonald. ● Wow! I have no words to explain the gratitude of being included in my first Mum’s Mail High Tea. A fun, well organised, exciting, emotional and informative event which I really hope will spike the number of new donors for The Sunflower Fund. Sharleigh Wilken. Send your letters to editor@mumsmail.com. Bargain Books Book Reviews For children • Hugless Douglas Goes to Little School by best-loved authorillustrator, David Melling. The big, brown, enormous and most lovable bear, Hugless Douglas, is back for yet another adventure! This time he is awfully excited to be going to Little School where there is so much to do and lots of hugs to be given out. Melling’s superb and brilliantly imaginative artwork and attention to detail makes the characters delightfully endearing before having read a single word. Hugless Douglas will without a doubt continue to stir imaginations as well as hush children before they sleep. Who wouldn’t love a good book about an enormous huggable bear? • Storietyd Vir 3-Jariges translated by Linda Rode. Threeyear-olds will love this collection of stories designed to appeal specifically to them. Make story time extra special with this wonderful collection filled with four wonderful Afrikaans stories to choose from. Packed with tons of fun and adventure, there is no doubt that three-year-old boys and girls will adore the brightly coloured illustrations and adorable characters on every page. • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Sticker Scenes by Nickelodeon. Children aged three to seven years who like Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will love this sticker scene book featuring shell-kicking scenes and over 40 stickers. They are in for an absolute epic ninja adventure! Cowabanga, dudes and dudettes! • Pinkabella Loves Drawing by Gillian Henney. Join Pinkabella and her family, friends and pets in this pink-as-can-be book with perfect pages to doodle, draw and colour. Little girls of all ages will be kept busy for hours with loads of ‘pinktastic’ fun and there are 25 cute erasers, so if they want to change their drawings they can!
