Cover Stars

Meet the Cover Stars September was Deaf Awareness month, so it is fitting that our cover stars this month are hearing impaired parents, Karishma and Avinash Kallichuran, with their son Alok. Their situation is unique in that Karishma and Avinash are both hearing impaired, and their son Alok, can hear perfectly. The family lives in Chatsworth and Karishma attends the eDEAF Employ & Empower training programme to further her studies in English. Avinash works as a bus driver for VN Naik School for the Deaf. Both Karishma and Avinash have been hearing impaired since birth but they have gradually learnt to lip read and they understand simple sign language.

he is a typical, happy little boy who loves riding his bicycle, singing, dancing, jumping on his bed and being active. He also loves his toys and watching cartoons. “Alok can understand us quite well, as we have people around us that can hear and speak to teach him. He is quite intelligent for his age and he understands that we are deaf. He understands many signs and sounds,” says Karishma. “When he needs something he knows what to ask for and when he talks we understand his signs and we can read his lips.” As a family they enjoy going on outings together and just spending time together. When asked what she would like hearing people to know about being hearing impaired, Karishma had this to say: “Well, I would like them to know that they should be grateful for what they have. It is not easy being hearing impaired – we wish we could hear those who are dear to us.” Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Their son, Alok, is almost 5 years old and

Hair Restoration Clinic Non-Surgical Hair Restoration There are two main types of hair loss - the genetic type (androgenetic alopecia) and the nongenetic type which has many possible causes such as stress, metabolic or physical disease and medications. It takes an expert hair examination to assess whether these conditions require medical treatment or just hair support and hair stimulation treatment. Non-genetic hair loss (in the absence of any disease) responds well to general supportive measures and hair stimulation serums that can stimulate the hair follicles into a new growth cycle. In terms of androgenetic alopecia (males with balding) a hair loss preventing tablet is necessary to protect the existing follicles on the crown and the forehead. Used with a topical treatment, this will protect against further hair loss and stimulate future growth. For females with familial hair loss on the crown of the head, a serum containing a product that will protect the follicles and also stimulate them may restore the thinning hair.

Surgical Hair Restoration This service is available for patients with non-responsive or unrecoverable hair loss – usually male pattern balding. This may also be done for females with resistant and permanent hair loss. Between 2000 and 2500 of the patient’s own follicles is harvested from the back of the head and then transplanted to the area where it is required. This can restore male and female pattern baldness rapidly and permanently. Eyebrow Restoration Thinning eyebrows may be restored by using a hair growth serum, or by way of follicle transplant. HAIR RESTORATION LASER THERAPY will also boost hair growth. FREE CONSULTATION: Contact the Hair Restoration Clinic for a free assessment by an expert in hair restoration. Enjoy a Tranquil Horse Ride

SUNCOAST

Giba Gorge Horse Trails is a Horse Riding and Trail Centre in the Giba Gorge Valley at Swallow Farm, close to Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park. Mum’s Mail staff members recently enjoyed a tranquil horse ride at Giba Gorge Horse Trails. Cheri van Staden and her team were great and they made sure we all rode a horse that suited our abilities – most of us were beginners. The horses were all really gentle with lovely natures. We took a ride past the dam and to the nearby waterfall, where we had a breather and took some photos. You would never guess that we were so close to the N3 freeway – it is so tranquil. Our ride lasted about an hour and Cheri was a wealth of knowledge, explaining to us the history of the area as we rode. All their horses ride without bits in their mouths and they are treated and trained with a great amount of love. They have been offering horse trails for the past 10 years and their horses have all been specially chosen for both character and temperament. The trails are exquisite and include rivers, waterfalls and an abundance of flora, fauna and wildlife. Trails are all guided and they cater for experienced and beginner riders alike. This is a great experience for families, couples, schools and corporate groups. They also offer full moon rides and team building programmes. Swallow Farm by the river is a great venue for picnics and parties and they also offer pony parties for kids. Cheri also offers private sessions for physically or mentally challenged children and adults. For more information contact Cheri on 082 623 3783 or visit www.gibahorsetrails.co.za. 10 Things to Remember as a Couple with a New Baby The baby books have been read and now neatly stored on the book shelf. The baby showers are over and the initial panic has subsided… sort of. In the middle of the emotions that you go through, as you welcome your new addition to the family, certain things need a special mention: 1. Take deep breaths. Life can be overwhelming and in certain situations, stop, take a deep breath and continue. 2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ever. 3. Figure out which white noise calms your baby and make it available on every device in your home and car. This is a simple lifesaver. Ours is the noise of a fan. 4. Once baby is in bed at night, sit and watch an episode of your favourite series together. This takes your mind away for a short while and relaxes you. 5. Remember not to punch people who say, “Sleep when the baby sleeps.” They clearly don’t know what they are talking about. 6. Stock up on dummies. Seriously. 7. Eat dinner together. Always. Even if it’s at 9pm. 8. Always check the nappy, it’s often the reason for a fuss. 9. If she is wearing a nice outfit, it is likely that your baby will poop. 10. Hearty Chicken Pie This recipe was passed on to me from my mom-in-law and it is an easy, hearty meal to whip up for your family - it is especially yummy on a winter’s evening! This is also great if you have left-over roast chicken to use up. Ingredients: • Cooked chicken (use leftover roast chicken or cook some chicken breasts, or if you really want to take a shortcut, buy a cooked rotisserie chicken!) • ½ cup of cream/milk • 2 Tbsp Cream of Mushroom powdered soup • 4 carrots • 2 sticks celery • 2 potatoes • One onion • Bacon (optional) • A dash of white wine (optional) • Mixed herbs, salt and pepper • Ready-made puff pastry

CHRISTMAS NIGHT RACING MARKET We are doing it again... Why don’t you save the date

Method: • Peel and chop potatoes, carrots, celery and onion. Sauté them in some butter/oil for a few minutes. • Chop up your cooked chicken and add to the pot. Add your herbs and seasoning to taste and mix. If you are adding bacon, chop and fry it and then add to the pot. • Add one cup of chicken stock and a dash of wine. Mix two tablespoons of the soup powder in some water to make a paste, and add to the pot and stir until it thickens. Add your cream/milk a little at a time. Reduce to a simmer and let it bubble for 20 minutes or until it reaches the desired consistency. • Pour the mixture into a casserole/pie dish and let it cool. Cut a piece of puff pastry to the correct size. Place it on top of your chicken filling. Press it down around the edges and prick a few holes in the pastry. Bake it in the oven at 180ᵒC for about 30 to 40 minutes. Written by Sarah Mackintosh. www.mumsmail.com

The Low-Carb Creed The Low-Carb Creed will be a follow-on to the bestselling The Real Meal Revolution. As The Real Meal Revolution continues to change lives, The Low-Carb Creed seeks to provide further important information on the lifestyle. It provides a meal plan, updated lists and a full manifesto (called The Creed). It covers common stumbling blocks to weight loss, potential grey areas are discussed, and basic cooking techniques and mouth-watering recipes ensure the lifestyle is easy to follow. Myths and misconceptions surrounding dietary needs are dealt with, as well as super foods, supplements, alternatives to highcarb foods and instructions on how to get started. LCHF is more than just Banting; the author also introduces the Paleo diet and how to transition onto it.

Poisonous Parents

Donation Alert!

Mom and Dad – possibly the most emotive words for any child, they are loaded with the assurances of love, warmth, trust and guidance. Parental love is the guiding light that raises children to be strong, confident and successful adults. It is well known that children who have the benefit of two loving parents, fare best.

Help us care for all the needy older folk in the Durban and surrounding areas, by simply donating unwanted and unused items such as clothing, books, crockery, furniture, etc.

Visit our website on: www.tafta.org.za

Sadly, a few parents abuse their trusted positions to do harm, rather than nurturing their child’s relationship with the other parent. Often one parent will undermine the other parent in a campaign to totally alienate a child from them. The perpetrator will use a range of tactics such as referring to the parent by his/her first name rather than “your dad/mom”, will continually deride the other parent both to his/her face and in the presence of the child, maybe even suggesting that a parent who has left the former matrimonial home is “not really a parent at all.” The alienated parent will experience great difficulty in getting to spend time with their child, even via the telephone. An alienated parent may eventually give up, feeling they will never regain the love of their now aggressive and defiant child. Constant rejection is very hard to contend with, but retreat is not the best approach. The child may be lost forever to her loving parent. She will also suffer irreparable psychological harm.

Savvy parents read literature on the subject, consult a good family lawyer and a psychologist experienced in dealing with such matters. They never give up, always assuring their child that they will love and support them forever. The battle can, and must (in the interests of the child) be won. Rescue Remedies for Your Garden Despite the severe water shortages being experienced in parts of SA, a garden keeps growing, and so gardening should continue. Here are a few smart water wise tips for your garden that you can implement right now: • Take steps to save your most valued plants. Whether they are gifts from friends and relatives, collectable rarities, or your favourite flowers, you may consider moving them to pots or giving them preferential mulching and watering to survive. • Insert watering tubes next to important shrubs. These can be made from two-litre cold-drink bottles or sawn-off sections of PVC pipe. Water poured down the watering tubes reaches the root zone without running away from the plant. • By pruning or lightly trimming shrubs and fillers, you regain a balanced ratio between roots and foliage. Less water will be needed for a slightly smaller plant. Don’t cut back too much, as this will stimulate too much new growth (which requires more water). • Keep your plants in good condition. It is still the growing season, and so you should still be feeding. Starving plants will be under even more stress, which makes them susceptible to diseases. Make use of slow release fertilisers. • Cover large tracts of exposed soil in beds. Exposure to wind, and the baking effect of sun, damages surface roots, and leads to evaporation of valuable water. Plant waterwise ground covers like portulaca, verbena, aptenia or felicia close together, to help shade and shelter the soil around your plants. Alternatively, make use of a thick mulch of bark chips, gravel, pine needles or dry grass clipping to cover exposed soil. For more information visit www.lifeisagarden.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Stay One Step Ahead Of Criminals Home security is an ever changing and fast developing industry, with new and more innovative measures being constantly developed. This puts a responsibility on any home owner to regularly reconsider the systems they have installed, to make sure it still offers the best possible and most effective protection. “As technology develops, it offers a host of opportunities for private security companies to better protect their clients,” says ADT Security’s KwaZulu-Natal District Manager Ivan Govender. It is not only security companies that are forced to up their game, explains Govender. He says criminals too are becoming more sophisticated. “It ultimately means that residents have to be one step ahead of criminals and make sure they don’t become complacent.” He urges the general public to request a security assessment with their respective security providers to ensure that they are safely protected, and that the best and most up to date technologies are in use. Technology can be of great assistance and ADT has seen tremendous success in several areas across KZN in terms of microwave passives, ceiling detectors and panel tampers on security keypads. “These are all solutions to address modus operandis such as break-ins through the roof and damaging of panels before an alarm activation,” says Govender.

Dr Des@home: Soul Month When last did you sit down and have a quiet moment to nurse your soul? October is the month during which we encourage women to take their bodies seriously. Women’s health is a combination of taking your body seriously enough to book that yearly pap smear that is way overdue and making the decision to examine your breasts once a month in your busy schedule. It is just as important to set aside some time for your soul to stay balanced and healthy! It is a huge challenge to take that hour out of your week for some reflection time, to listen to what your soul needs. We bend over backwards for our families, at work and everywhere we are needed. Pick up your diary, book those tests that can prevent disease and book a date with yourself – you deserve it!

Dr Bhayroo & Partners Inc.

Breast Cancer Screening Doesn’t Have To Be Scary Breast cancer has become a prominent issue in women’s health in recent years. Greater awareness has led to many more women taking preventative measures to ensure they catch the illness early or simply to rest easy knowing they have been screened and the results are clear.

Diagnostic mammogram is an x-ray examination of the breasts. This is performed when a person, their doctor or another health professional discovers unusual signs or symptoms in one or both breasts, such as a lump, tenderness, and nipple discharge or skin changes. The mammogram detects whether the changes in the breast have a benign (non- cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) appearance. This helps healthcare providers to decide on the appropriate treatment plan. Screening mammography is carried out on women who do not have any symptoms of breast disease. Your doctor would recommend a screening mammogram to detect breast cancer before it can be felt as a lump. The aim is to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage. Chiropractic for Expectant Mums A question that many people ask is whether Chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy… The simple answer is yes. Regular chiropractic adjustments can provide safe and effective relief for strained joints and muscles as they are pulled in new directions by the developing baby. The most obvious benefits that a woman can experience when under chiropractic care are: Reduction in pain: The results of collaborative medical and chiropractic studies have clearly indicated that between 75%-85% of pregnant patients who received Chiropractic care when pregnant found notable pain relief. Reduced labour and delivery time: Women who receive regular chiropractic care are taking care of their nervous system and many have found their bodies are better prepared to handle the process of childbirth. When the nervous system is functioning optimally, the whole body works as it should. Improved foetal positioning: A properly balanced and open pelvis allows more room for the foetus to turn into a proper position to ease labour. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth. Improving poor posture: Many women have issues with back pain during pregnancy due to the extra weight they carry in the front of their body. Chiropractors can restore proper posture, and prevent the stress of pregnancy on the body from causing longterm pain and posture issues. Controlling the symptoms of pregnancy – Chiropractic care has been shown to reduce some of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with pregnancy like nausea and musculoskeletal pain. Regular chiropractic care can help both mums and babies maintain optimal health during and after pregnancy.

Weigh-Less: Your Journey to A Healthier You Mary Holroyd founded Weigh-Less Health and Weight Management in 1975, envisioning all the values and support that she wanted to receive as an overweight person. Weigh-Less was to incorporate all the tools and support that she needed to assist in losing her excess weight. Mary wanted a liveable, doable and affordable eating plan that would be founded on sound nutritional principles. With WeighLess, she knew that whatever weight was lost, it would be done in a healthy and sustainable way. The vision was to create an environment where members could come and feel secure and supported on their journey to their optimum weight. The idea would be to have groups, led by former overweight people who had empathy, and could support the members both individually, and as a group. Weigh-Less was built on these foundations – the WeighLess trilogy – the group experience, the group leader and the Weight Management Programme, with the member in the middle. Once you join Weigh-Less, your challenge becomes their challenge, and your success, their success! With October being a month focussing on obesity, Weigh-Less is gearing up to assist more people than ever discover the best way to lose weight, without them having to give up any of their favourite food groups such as carbohydrates. As the only health and weight management organisation to be named an endorsement entity by the Department of Health, Weigh-Less offers all South Africans looking to retake their wellness and discover sustainable lifelong health, an opportunity to get onto the Weigh-Less Way in October.

Down Syndrome Awareness National Down Syndrome day is observed on 20 October. Down syndrome is a genetic condition that typically causes some level of learning disability and characteristic physical features. Many babies born with Down syndrome are diagnosed with the condition after birth and are likely to have: • Reduced muscle tone leading to floppiness (hypotonia) • Eyes that slant upwards and outwards • A small mouth with a protruding tongue • A flat back of the head • Below-average weight and length at birth. What causes Down syndrome? Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21 in a baby’s cells. In the vast majority of cases, this isn’t inherited and is simply the result of a oneoff genetic change in the sperm or egg. Life with Down syndrome Although there is no “cure” for Down syndrome, there are ways to help children with the condition develop into healthy and fulfilled individuals who are able to achieve the level of independence right for them. This includes: • Access to good healthcare, including a range of different specialists. • Early intervention programmes to provide support for children and parents. • Good parenting skills and an ordinary family life. • Education and support groups to provide information and help for parents, friends and families. • Improved education and support has led to more opportunities for people with Down syndrome. These include being able to leave home, form new relationships, gain employment and lead largely independent lives. If you would like more information about Psychologist, Personal Down syndrome, you can contact Trudy Chetty, of non-profit organisation, &founder Career Coaching You’re Magical – created to assist people with Down syndrome and their families. Hair Solutions The colder months can wreak havoc on our hair. Here in Durban winter is officially over, but we have had some of our coldest days in spring! Here are some hair evils and how to fix them.

Dull Hair The colder months can be particularly hard on your hair, causing it to lose colour and become dull and dry. Solution: You can use a deep conditioner that will moisturise and rehydrate your hair, or you can get your hair dyed in a beautiful rich colour. Ask your hairdresser for Olaplex, which will repair your damaged hair and prevent further damage.

Itchy Scalp Being inside, where it is heated also affects your scalp – leaving it dry, and itchy. This can also lead to dandruff. Solution: First and foremost, don’t scratch – this will just cause more damage and more dandruff. Use a product called Scalpicin which will help alleviate the itchiness. Try not to use too much shampoo too often as it has chemicals that can dry out your scalp. Slim Down and Lash Up for Summer Lash & Tan is committed to providing clients with the best eyelash extensions, spray tanning and Laser lipo treatments on the market. Lash extensions: Lash extensions are enhancements designed to add length, thickness and fullness to the natural eyelashes. Specialised isolating techniques are used, where every single lash extension is applied to each natural eyelash to ensure a natural, elegant and fuller look which adds length and fullness to your existing natural eyelashes, ensuring you have damage-free lash extensions. There is no discomfort involved in the application and after the initial full set is applied, it is recommended that you have fills every two to three weeks to maintain the fullness of your lash extensions. Slimming: The Lipo Slim Laser is the latest slimming and contouring system. It is designed to reduce unwanted fat without surgery. The laser penetrates through the skin to the hypodermis and makes the fat cells release glycerol, water and free fatty acids. The fat cell shrinks and collapses. The lymphatic system then removes the fatty liquids through your veins. The body needs to get the released liquids out through heat or energy in 24 hours to prevent it from turning back into fat cells – this is done through a FIR Sauna Treatment. They also offer Biominceur Body Wraps. Contact Martie on 072 268 1566 or visit www.lashandtan.co.za. Radiant Summer Skin Summer is around the corner and we all want to put our best face forward. Here are five simple steps for radiant skin. Exfoliation: The skin needs help with shedding dead skin cells. Skin Evolution recommends products containing AHAs (e.g. Glycolic or Lactic Acid) or BHAs (e.g. Salicylic Acid) that gently ‘detach’ the old, dead skin cells to reveal brighter and healthier skin. Moisturiser: No matter what your skin type, your skin needs a moisturiser to keep it plump, well hydrated and nourished. Choose your moisturiser according to your skin type. You need a moisturiser that contains little or no oil but is highly hydrating if you have oily skin. A combination skin can use a moisturiser that has equal amounts of oil and hydration but a dry skin will require a moisturiser that is highly nourishing and hydrating. Sunscreen: Choose a sunscreen with a broad/multi-spectrum UVA/UVB protection of no less than SPF20 and wear it daily. If

you are exercising or are in the water, wear a sunscreen that is water and sweat resistant and don’t forget to reapply. Water: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin and body well hydrated. It helps to boost skin complexion and flush out toxins and has many other health benefits. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables: Eating fresh fruit and vegetables daily provides the body with vital nutrients to maintain a healthy body, and fruit and vegetables high in vitamin C and vitamin A maintain a skin’s vibrant, healthy glow. How natural are Huggies Wipes? Little ones are unpredictable – you never know when there will be a milk burp, a hand full of mud, the nappy of all nappies or a pumpkin smear across their foreheads that needs to be cleaned. This is why most parents won’t leave the house without a pack of wipes. Baby wipes have been around for ages and have to be one of the handiest inventions of all time. Huggies Wipes are made differently and offer moms a great cleaning solution. Unlike other wipes on the market, Huggies Baby Wipes are made from three layers of a unique material that contains 65% natural fibres. They clean gently, locking away the mess and quickly refreshing baby’s sensitive skin.

Huggies has gone one step further to showcase just how natural their wipes are by introducing a new 360ᵒ, virtual reality video. The video shows the viewer how natural and pure Huggies Baby Wipes are – natural enough to sprout a bean! Most of us are familiar with the simple science experiment from school where the bean was placed between moistened cotton wool and a container. Because this environment is pure and free of any nasties the bean thrives and grows. Huggies tested this with their wipes and the bean sprouts when it is nestled between the wipes and the container. Try your own bean experiment at home and share your pictures with on the Huggies social media platforms – Facebook HuggiesSA and @huggies_sa on Twitter and Instagram – they would love to see them. What to do when a child goes missing Having your child go missing is any parent’s worst nightmare, and there are a few things that can be done which bust myths about reporting a missing child. The statistics are shocking – a child goes missing every five hours and the SAPS received a total of 1 697 cases in 2013 alone.

“One of the first things that a parent must do is to report that your child has gone missing. You don’t need to wait 24 hours in order to report a missing child. The sooner you report that the child is missing, the better,” says Cartrack’s Marketing and Communication Manager, Jacqui Marsh. “To report a missing child one needs to go to your nearest South African Police Station and complete a SAPS 55 form.” Additional information that parents need to have with them when reporting a missing child is what the child was last wearing, a picture of the child and where the child went missing. “These may all seem like obvious things but when the situation arises, it may be the last thing on your mind. Cartrack has joined the fight to reunite our country’s missing children with their loved ones by supporting Missing Children SA, to help recover these precious ones. “We are encouraging the public to get involved with the campaign to help reunite missing children with their families, by following Cartrack on Facebook and sharing the missing posts,” concludes Jacqui.

Biting Babies and Toddler Tantrums

Studio & Outdoor Photography

Embarrassing, frustrating (or painful!) as they may be, biting and temper tantrums are a normal part of your child’s development. It’s helpful for parents to equip themselves (and their little ones) to cope with this behaviour. How to deal with biting and temper tantrums Identify the cause of the behaviour. Once you have considered what your child is trying to communicate through their biting or tantrum, you can respond with understanding. Reward positive behaviour. If your toddler is seeking attention through a temper tantrum, leave the room. Rather reward them with attention each time they display positive behaviour. Give them a sense of control. Choices provide the child with a sense of control over the situation and can prevent a tantrum from beginning. Give them simple choices, such as, “would you like to wear your pink or blue shirt today?” State the desired behaviour. Let your child know the behaviour you would like them to demonstrate. Prepare for change. Children sometimes need time to process the end of an activity. This will allow them time to complete their game and mentally process the transition from one activity to another. Use songs and games. Songs, stories and games can be used to initiate a given task, establish routine and make boring activities fun! Teaching responsibility for chosen actions. When toddlers hit, bite or kick during a temper tantrum, they don’t always understand that their behaviour hurts the other person. Some ways to teach them that this behaviour is unacceptable include: • Removing your child from the situation. • Talking to your toddler to try find out what is worrying them. • Praising acceptable and positive behaviour. Why You Should We Limit Your Children’s Screen Time Our kids are growing up in a technological age. They are confronted with tablets, smartphones, laptops, DSTV and so much more. Your phone is seen as part of your image and our kids want the latest and greatest. So why should we limit them? The biggest concern is that kids are not spending enough time outside playing. According to research, a child younger than two who watches television has a 15% higher risk of developing ADD/ADHD. Thus a child under two should not be exposed to ANY screen time. Another big concern is that parents don’t play with their children anymore. Most families are dual income households and mom and dad work full day and are too tired to play with their kids. Toddlers don’t know how to play any more as they are not used to thinking up games. Screen time takes away creativity.

What Is Baby Bottle Tooth Decay? Tooth decay is a common health problem, second in prevalence only to the common cold. Tooth decay in infants and very young children is often referred to as baby bottle tooth decay. Baby bottle tooth decay happens when a baby is fed with milk, formula or fruit juice and the baby falls asleep with some liquid remaining in the mouth. The same problem can arise when a young child nurses from the breast for a long stretch of time because breast milk also contains sugar. The sugars in the milk or juice combine with the bacteria in the mouth to form acid that dissolve the immature enamel. Newly erupted baby teeth are very vulnerable to decay. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for tooth decay to develop. Here are a few simple steps that can help stave off baby bottle tooth decay:

containing anything but water. • Have the child drinking from a cup by 9 to 12 months old. • Do not dip the pacifier in anything sweet such as honey, sugar or gripe water. • Clean the child’s teeth by wiping them with a cloth or brushing them after eating or drinking. • Visit the dentist or oral hygienist sometime after the first tooth comes in and before the child’s first birthday. Damage caused by baby bottle tooth decay is often not diagnosed until the child has a severe problem, because many parents do not schedule regular dental exams for their small children.

• Don’t put a child to sleep with a bottle

Educated Life

Master Quest Moments: Word Nerd – Reading Know-How One of the key ways to get information is through reading. Sadly though, it’s one of the skills many of our students lack. While schools are meant to provide education, I’m a strong believer that reading and the love of books should be something parents need to instil, right from day one. I encourage parents to set aside at least two reading sessions a week. For younger kids, parents could read bedtime stories, asking the kids to point at and repeat certain words. They can also be asked to re-enact or retell the story. For older kids, there should be independent reading sessions scheduled. A great task is to get the kids to watch a movie, and then read the book it was based on. The kids can discuss the similarities and differences between the book and movie. Bring reading and spelling into everyday life by having a family message board. You and the family can add messages, plan the menu, as well as add reminders. Bring technology into learning by creating a family chat group – have a quiz of the day. Kids take an interest in something when they can relate or find a common link, so take note of their likes and interests. Happy reading!

What You Can Do To Reduce Education Costs Educate yourself about the options and costs of providing for your child’s education. Understand the challenge you have ahead and plan for it.

contribute but friends and co-workers could be convinced to contribute towards the gift that will keep on giving in lieu of soon to be discarded gimmicks. Give your plan a chance to work. Be disciplined in your savings and your strategy. Understand how your investments will perform under different conditions so you manage your expectations and stay the course during the tough times. Avoid an all or nothing approach. Even if you cannot put away the prescribed amount, you should still contribute what you can. Life changes and you may get opportunities to make up the shortfall. In any case would it not be better to have covered half of all fees rather than none at all?

Choose which levels of education to target – since primary education has the smallest lead time (six years) it is usually more beneficial to target longer dated secondary (14 years) and tertiary (19 years) objectives if you have to choose. Understand that time is the biggest advantage you have – start saving and investing as early as possible to allow compound returns to work in your favour. Prioritise education savings as a financial goal – make sure decisions around rival financial targets incorporate what you are trying to achieve. Saving a lump-sum If you feel overwhelmed get some of R120 000 on a new car purchase (and professional help! investing it) could feasibly cover your child’s entire tertiary tuition costs. Crawford Pre-Primary North Coast: Getting to the Heart of What Matters After having gained experience teaching all the pre-primary age groups, and in leadership as principal of Westville PrePrimary, Rose Humphries joined the Crawford family in 1998 as a Grade 0 teacher and was appointed as principal of Crawford Pre-Primary in the same year. “Young children learn so much when actively involved in their acquisition of knowledge and teachers should strive to provide as many of these learning opportunities as possible for their pupils. As a teacher I hatched snake eggs, silkworm eggs and hen eggs and the excitement, interest and total buy-in these activities generated, proved to me the value of hands on learning. I always encourage my teachers to provide as many opportunities as possible where the children can explore, discover, think and problem-solve.” “I am privileged to work with a cohesive team of experienced and dedicated teachers who ensure that each child is made to feel special and benefits from the Crawford ‘magic’. Our school encompasses diverse cultures and our pupils are encouraged to show respect for others’ cultures, feelings, ideas and belongings. When children of such a young age are educated in this type of environment they learn to be more accepting of others,” says Rose. “At Crawford Pre-Primary North Coast we give the children as many opportunities as possible to develop the skills that they will need to help ensure their future success – collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Our educational challenge is to ensure that the children have as much fun as possible while learning, as this will help ensure a positive attitude to lifelong learning.”

Carbon Dioxide Balloons

TAilorEd PACkAgES • Adult Parties/ Corporate Events • Balloon Artistry • Airbrush Tattoos • A Photographer

Supplies needed: • Spoon • 2 Teaspoons (10g) baking soda • Balloon • 1/3 cup (90ml) white vinegar • Old water bottle

Face Painting

The experiment: Using the spoon, put the baking soda into the balloon. Pour the vinegar into the bottle until it’s about one-third full. Keeping the baking soda in the body if the balloon, stretch the mouth over the bottle’s opening. Then dump the baking soda from the balloon onto the bottle. The outcome: As the vinegar and baking soda mix, a gas – carbon-dioxide – is created. It is a byproduct of vinegar and baking soda reacting together, and the balloon blows up.

Why it worked: The vinegar is acetic acid, and the baking 031 822 1035 • 084 565 2116 • 083 454 0264 soda is a base – the opposite pH to an acid. When they mix, it causes a reaction and carbonic acid is formed, separating into babbles of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water. The Co2 has nowhere to go except up into the balloon, causing it to inflate. GREAT SPECIALS Variation: Change the temperature of your vinegar, making it hotter or colder, and see if that affects the speed at which your balloon grows.

Prices from R400 - R650

Try this! Bounce your balloon. Does it bounce as easily as a regular airfilled balloon? The CO2 gas is heavier than air. Helium is lighter than air, making balloons filled with that gas float. Source: 101 Kids Activities by Holly Homer and Rachel Miller. www.mumsmail.com

Party Game: Take the Matchbox Challenge If you’re a parent who prefers to host your child’s birthday party at home instead of going to a party venue, this game will be great fun for children of all ages to play – and it gets them exploring outdoors! Never play with matches! Thankfully, empty matchboxes are a lot less dangerous and should be played with at every possible opportunity. As well as making nifty drawers for elves, they are perfect containers for a miniature treasure hunt.

• Birthday Parties • Fun Science Club Extra-mural Activities • Science Shows & Workshops for Schools

Make sure every player has an empty matchbox – all the same size. Giant matchboxes are definitely cheating (and are also too big for elves, in case you were wondering). You have 15 minutes (or as long as you decide) to fill your matchbox with as many things as you can find – a pebble, leaf, twig, small feather, blade of grass – whatever will fit in. At the end of the game, add up the points, one for each different item – and see who has won! Have a prize for the winner. Variation: You could give each child a list of items they have to collect in their matchbox and the one who collects all of them first wins a prize. Tip: You can paint and decorate your matchboxes in advance to make them look more colourful.

Magic Play Dough This play dough really is magic! It is so easy (and cheap) to make, it lasts for months and it’s soft and silky! It also makes a great activity for tiny tots at a birthday party.

Set aside for a few minutes and knead when cool enough to touch. Split it into as many balls as you would like and knead in a different colour food colouring for each ball.

Ingredients: (This makes a big ball). • 2 cups baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) • 1 cup corn flour (corn starch/Mazina) • 1.5 cups water • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil • Food colouring

Tip: A small amount of food colouring goes a long way – use one or two drops to start with and adjust the colour to your preference. If you are going to make only one colour, add the food colouring to the water before you start cooking – it’s much easier that way!

How to Make Magic Play Dough: Add all the ingredients to a pot. Stir well before cooking. The corn flour will initially be hard to stir, but it will all come together and turn into a runny liquid. Put it onto the stove and cook until it turns into a thick mush and becomes really hard to stir. It will be a little more sticky than the play dough will end up once it is cooled and kneaded.

Laidback Life

Bargain Books Book Reviews For children • Totally Amazing Mazes by Parragon. Kids will love to find their way through this totally a-MAZE-ing book! Filled with 100 twisty-turny adventures, kids won’t be able to stop until they have finished them all. Let them help the zombie hunter find a route to catch all the escaped zombies, help the aliens find the start trail to planet Earth, take a tour of the Thrillville Theme Park, travel between the bamboo branches in the jungle to catch sight of the rare giant panda and escort the intrepid archaeologist to the temple to find treasure. A must have for all Maze adventurers! • Disney Palace Pets: Lily: Tiana’s Helpful Kitten by Tennant Redbank. Meet the Disney princesses’ new best friends – the Palace Pets! In this new instalment, children aged six to nine are introduced to Princess Tiana’s sweet kitten named Lily. There is no doubt that they will love this new instalment in this early chapter book series with a collectible bookmark inside! • Disney Inside Out: Sadness Saves The Day! by Tracey West. This book is totally interactive but without the use of technology! Kids are given choices allowing them to control the story and make this story their own by deciding what will happen and directing the story line to one of 20 possible endings! Let them decide where Sadness’s adventure through the Mind World will lead and how Riley will manage while she is gone. The outcomes are so much cooler than a regular book! • Disney Alice in Wonderland adapted by T.T Sutherland. Based on the screenplay by Linda Woolverton, produced by Richard D.Zanuck, Joe Ruth, Suzanne Todd & Jeniffer Todd and directed by Tim Burton. Just beyond our world lies a place where madmen share their tea with hares and dormice. A queen enjoys a tyrannous reign, while terrifying beasts and immaterial felines roam her kingdom. There is a simple way into this world, and a young woman named Alice has found it. Join her as she travels down the rabbit hole and into a place called Underland. • Disney Alice Through the Looking Glass adapted by Kari Sutherland, based on the screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Based on characters created by Lewis Carroll, produced by Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd & Jeniffer Todd, Tim Burton and directed by James Bobin. When Alice returns to the whimsical world of Underland, all is not well. The Mad Hatter has lost his muchness. That is to say, he has become horribly and certifiably normal. What’s more, the banished Red Queen has devised a twisted plot to regain the throne. Soon Alice realizes that the only way to save the Hatter – and Underland - is to travel to the past and right old wrongs. But Time may not be on her side. In fact, he might even try to stop her!
