RE/MAX Panache
I am so pleased to announce that we smashed last year’s fundraising total – we raised a staggering R274 000 at this year’s Mum’s Mail High Tea for The Sunflower Fund, which was nearly R60K more than last year! I’d like to say a massive ‘Thank You’ again to everyone who made this event possible, from all of the sponsors – small and large, to the fundraising team, including Alice Leah of The A List and Steph Berry of The Sunflower Fund, to name but a few. Thanks also to my fabulous team at Mum’s Mail and the many volunteers who generously gave of their time to help such an amazing charity! Last but not least though, is the ladies who attended the event – you all looked stunning and contributed so much to make this happen – you should all be very proud of yourselves for being part of such an amazing achievement. Well done indeed. We will now take a few months off before planning commences for next year’s event!

“As a family we enjoy doing anything outdoors where she can just wander around finding interesting things to shove in her mouth,” laughs Skholiwe. Skholiwe says becoming a parent has taught him discipline and patience. “I’ve always been a get up and go sort of person, and like to live in the moment, and with a kid that is impossible to do. Everything is carefully planned well in advance, so I’ve just adapted to that way of life,” he says. Skholiwe concludes with this advice to other parents: “It’s very important to give each partner their space and allow them to form their own bond/parenting style with their little one - don’t try and impose yours on them every time.”

How to Keep your Cat’s Teeth Clean: Part 2 Stimulate their gums: Tooth decay usually starts with irritated or inflamed gums, so however you’re able to maintain your cat’s oral health, don’t forget to massage his gums when you can. Not only will this accelerate healing, it will strengthen the gums so your cat will be less likely to suffer from gum problems further on.
PETS FOR ADOPTION
Good eats: Diet is another important factor in maintaining your cat’s teeth for good health. Feed your cat a combination of wet and dry foods and vary the meats, too. Besides fish, you can also feed your cat beef and rabbit.
CHLOE female, 19 months
DELILAH female, 19 weeks
PEPPER male, 18 weeks
TANNA female, 18 weeks
Give them bones to chew on: Bones knock off tartar and help keep teeth and gums healthy. But, be careful not to give your cat pork, chicken or fish bones. These could splinter and cause severe internal injuries. Raw bones are also better than cooked ones, since they are less likely to splinter.
ROMEY female, 13 weeks
DUSTY male, 6 months
Don’t wait until it’s too late: Tooth decay and gum disease have been linked to heart, kidney, and other serious chronic illnesses. Don’t wait until your cat shows signs of distress to have his teeth checked out. Preventive care, yearly checkups, and a good diet can ensure that your cat stays happy and healthy.
LEXI female, 4 years
TEDDY male, 4 years
To treat or not to treat? Tartar control treats and chews are okay in moderation, but they’re not sufficient for effectively cleaning your cat’s teeth. If, however, you regularly clean your cat’s teeth, special food supplements can be a good addition to an already healthy diet. Try using these healthy chews and treats as a reward for good behaviour while getting your cat used to having his teeth cleaned.

Top Tips for Making your Workplace Secure Considering that the workplace is where people spend the majority of their day, the environment needs to be as secure as your own home. According to Ivan Govender, district manager (KwaZulu-Natal) for Fidelity ADT, the most prevalent security issues encountered at business premises are criminals posing as customers, doors left unlocked and key-holders not coming out to the premises to unlock for security when the alarm is activated. Govender offers these top tips for making the workplace more secure: • Do a risk assessment evaluating your current procedures and systems. Once the assessment is done, follow up the findings with a solid plan and procedures. • Involve your staff. It is very important that staff are involved in formulating the very best security plan for the business. All staff, including those who haven’t been assigned a specific security duty as part of the overall plan, need to be on board and committed to a safe working environment. • Employees should carry a panic button with them at all times and should not hesitate to press it if they suspect something is wrong. • Know the emergency procedures. • Take responsibility for knowing who enters and leaves the building. Ensure visitors, including contractors, are escorted to their appointments within the building at all times. • Report strangers in the building to security immediately. • Lock all your personal valuables away. • Ensure all doors and windows are properly secured before leaving. • Know how to use the alarm system. • Staff should be trained to identify suspicious activity and people and know what to do and who to contact in an emergency. The Big Easy
Established in 2005
Recently we were kindly invited to experience The Big Easy restaurant at the Durban Hilton. Now we know that Ernie Els is a big sporting star, but we were keen to find out what his restaurant was like. The dining room was inviting, we loved the open kitchen; seeing the chefs at work was exciting and the sounds and smells set the taste buds tingling. The attention to detail was striking, from the freshly baked bread, served in its own iron pot, to the attentive staff who were always on hand without being intrusive. Chef Sbu presented an array of mouth-watering starters so we could sample the menu, the presentation was beautiful, and chef’s “signature bites” Oxtail and Marrow fritters were definitely a hit. For our main course we tried one of “Ernie’s Favourites” - lamb shank bunny chow, and steak from the grill. The bunny chow was a notable success, elevating the local staple to an exquisitely-flavoured dish, at home in a fine dining restaurant. Vintage wines are always available from Ernie Els’ own internationally renowned vineyard, so the wine buffs will be in heaven - for us, the house wine was a very high standard and perfectly complimented the food. A special thank you to chef Sbu and our waiter Petros for making our evening a special one to remember.

Move It Removals: your Caring Removal Company Move It Removals is a family run business, and has been run by the same family for the past 35 years, with long-standing staff members - one, in particular, has worked for them for all 35 years! Staff are carefully chosen and personally trained to work to the business standards – to be polite, friendly and honest. They endeavour to make your home or office move as seamless and stress-free as possible. The services they offer, in addition to home and office moves are: distribution of goods, packing materials and services, placing of furniture, storage and insurance - all on request. Move It Removals caters for a variety of removal needs: moving house, moving business or contractual work for manufacturers delivering products. In addition, they provide storage for long or short term needs, as well as providing the packaging service for those too busy to do it themselves. Insurance can be provided, although many household insurers will
cover this cost if a policy is already held with them. They do removals throughout KwaZulu-Natal. I have used Move It Removals twice in the last six months and they were excellent on both occasions! The guys worked extremely hard moving boxes, dismantling and reassembling furniture including two double beds and a high sleeper cabin style bed, all within eight hours. These guys are fantastic, which is why I have chosen to use them twice already! If you want a personalised removal service that doesn’t cost the earth, then you must contact Angela Steyn on 082 467 3509 or email moveit@mweb.co.za For more information, visit and follow their FB page at www.facebook.com/ MoveItRemovalsKZN Review by Victoria Arthur.

What your Sugar Cravings might Really Mean For many people, the battle with sugar can be particularly ferocious. Cravings tend to crop up when there’s a sense of depletion. However, if you can pinpoint what you lack, it’s easier to make healthier choices instead of going for something sugar-coated. Here are a few possibilities for what may be driving those sweet cravings:
of an imbalance in your gut health. Eating sugary junk food makes the problem worse. By bringing in foods that promote healthier bacteria, particularly options with high amounts of probiotics like low-sugar yogurt and other fermented foods, the good bacteria can replace the saboteurs.
Magnesium deficiency For many people, a sugar craving in the form of chocolate could signal a lack of magnesium. While the cacao in chocolate is a rich source of magnesium, the sugar in chocolate could turn frequent consumption into a potential problem since it causes insulin spikes and other issues. Instead of chocolate, reach for non-sugar magnesium sources like nuts, seeds, beans and dark leafy greens.
Not enough rest Consider adding more non-snoozing time into your day instead of seeing bedtime as your only opportunity to get some stress relief. Lack of adequate rest can make your body feel depleted in many ways, including nutritionally. This can kick off a need for a “boost” that might come in the form of sugar. Integrate short rest periods into every day, especially at times when sugar cravings are strong. Instead of that sugary snack, try going for a 15-minute walk outside.
Imbalanced gut bacteria Sugar cravings can sometimes be the result

Dr Des@home: Maternal Depression
Moms who are depressed often suffer in silence, but this common illness can also take a heavy toll on their children. As many as one in four women will suffer from this biological illness at some point in her lifetime, including about 10 percent of new mothers who develop postpartum depression. Not only are children with a depressed parent two to four times more likely to develop depression themselves before adulthood, but extensive research has shown that a mother’s depression, especially when untreated, can interfere with her child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. Mothers are often so focused on their families that they disregard their own well-being and even if they recognise the symptoms, they often assume that they are just stressed and will eventually snap out of it. However, research has found that the longer your symptoms go untreated, the more likely you are to suffer from future episodes of depression. Getting treatment is as essential for depression as it is for diabetes, because moderate to severe depression rarely goes away on its own. With the correct treatment, depressed moms can still be excellent parents who are less critical, more supportive, less irritated and more able to coordinate social and academic plans effectively. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms you might be depressed: Prolonged sadness lasting for more than two weeks, frequent tearfulness, changes in sleep or appetite, loss of energy, inability to take pleasure in former interest, social withdrawal, increased irritability, agitation, worry or anxiety and thoughts of death or suicide. Reading this article may be difficult, but you owe it to yourself and your children to get the help you need. By Dr Deseré Ferreira, 031 – 582 5301. www.mumsmail.com

The entire simulation was recorded on a Go-Pro camera, which was later evaluated. According to feedback received from Angels Consultants, this simulation was a huge success, with the ‘door to needle’ time being 30 minutes and 10 seconds. Niresh Bechan said; “Our stroke teams are well trained and experienced with dealing with stroke emergencies. Although the simulation was almost half the expected ‘door to needle’ time of 60 minutes, we have on record the ‘door to needle’ time of 16 minutes in respect of an actual case.”

Sporty Kids and Chiropractic In present day health and fitness, kids are extremely active, often participating in multiple sports concurrently. We’ve accepted that injuries are part of the game, but do they have to be? The human body possesses incredible compensatory mechanisms for imbalances in functioning, however - similar to you asking your child to tidy their room for the tenth time - it will eventually snap! Dysfunctional joints and muscle weakness lead to abnormal movement patterns. During sporting activities this can place increased strain on other parts of the body, as it attempts to preserve as-close-to-normal functioning as possible. Unfortunately this can’t continue forever and will result in multiple visits to your chiropractor, time on the sideline, rehabilitation and increased risk of re-injury.

The ideal situation would be to identify and correct compensatory patterns before injury results. This is where the sports chiropractor can intervene and identify differences in muscle strength, joint range of motion and flexibility. Early treatment restores joint range of motion and wakes up those inhibited muscles, allowing for quality performance and an injury-free season on the field.

Manage Your Stress Between juggling work, family, and other commitments, you can become too stressed out and busy, especially as we near the end of the year. But you need to set time aside to unwind or your mental and physical health can suffer. Learning how to manage your stress takes practice, but you can, and need to, do it. Here are some ways to make it easier:
deep breaths can take the pressure off you right away. You’ll be surprised how much better you feel once you get good at it. Sit in a comfortable position with your hands in your lap and your feet on the floor, or lie down. Close your eyes. Imagine yourself in a relaxing place and slowly take deep breaths in and out. Do this for five to 10 minutes at a time.
Exercise: Working out regularly is one of the best ways to relax your body and mind. Plus, exercise will improve your mood. But you have to do it often for it to pay off.
Eat Well: Eating a regular, well-balanced diet will help you feel better in general. It may also help control your moods. And don’t skip meals.
Relax Your Muscles: When you’re stressed, your muscles get tense. You can help loosen them up on your own and refresh your body by stretching, enjoying a massage, taking a hot bath or shower and getting a good night’s sleep.
Make Time for Hobbies: Set aside time for things you enjoy.
Deep Breathing: Stopping and taking a few

more than two glasses of alcohol a day • Use of oral contraception exceeding five years • Hormone Replacement Therapy exceeding five years • Diets high in saturated fat, and resulting obesity • High stress levels Warning signs • Lump in breast • Puckering of skin around the breast and chest area • Increase in size of breasts • Dimpling or change of nipple shape • Swelling of glands • Discharge from nipple • Swelling in armpit • Lowering of one breast or nipple On top of your monthly self-examination you should have an annual mammogram especially if you are older than 40, or 5 years prior to your youngest relative’s age when they were diagnosed with breast cancer. It is without a doubt the best means of early detection. Mammography will detect most breast cancers long before clinical examination, ultrasound or any other means. In a generation where we are constantly judged and afforded opportunity based on our looks, why not take advantage of it? Ultimately, when we look and feel our best, it translates into all areas of life. In order to get aesthetic assistance, such as Botox® and Dysport and fillers, and still maintain a natural look best suited to the contours of the face, it is essential to consult with a professional that specialises in these procedures. Not only do you want to see an experienced professional, you also want to ensure it’s someone continuously keeping up to date with the latest trends and techniques, as advancement in anti-ageing treatments is ongoing. Another very important aspect is to ensure that the institution you frequent makes use of the correct products. There are unfortunately cheap and nasty alternatives available on the market – when treatments are very cheap, you should be suspicious of whether they are genuine. So what exactly do these treatments do? Botulinum Toxin relaxes muscle movement and is great for lines and wrinkles that occur due to repetitive movements as well as giving you a chemical brow or jowl lift.

Fillers are used to add volume to the face and restore one’s facial shape. They work by filling in wrinkles and lines and plumping areas that have lost fat pads (such as the cheeks, under-eye area and temples), causing the skin to sink and sag. Fillers are also used to restore lip volume and hollows under the eyes and to fill in deep lines like nasal labial folds and marionette lines.

Buff Beauty Parlour
Betty pondered and let out a slow sigh. With her penchant for the dramatic, she pouted her perfect red lips in thought. As it occurred to her, Betty’s eyes opened wide showing off her trademark lashes. “That’s it!” she exclaimed. “Alice went down the rabbit hole but I shall take them to Wonderland.”
“Fairy Godmothers are so last season. And who needs one when you have a little shop of miracles?” She poured herself a glass of champagne and admired her nails, um, cleverness.
And so, she set about creating Buff, an emporium that was unapologetically about beauty. “I will bring Hollywood to the people – even men – but just not in the way they expected,” the iconic star thought to herself, giggling out loud. Precision waxing, perfectly polished nails and luscious lashes… but something was missing. Retail therapy, or course! She would keep all the things she coveted and, because she was as naughty as she was nice, she would even include some erotique. After all, beauty begins with a smile.

TCA Skin Peels Chemical peels are often used to exfoliate a few layers (light/superficial peel) or many layers (medium-depth peel) of the skin to improve the skin’s appearance and texture. Light or superficial peels are generally recommended to maintain as well as improve the skin without the dreaded downtime. However, some skins need something a little stronger and that is where a mediumdepth peel, such as the Tricholoracetic Acid peel (TCA), is recommended.

TCA peels are highly effective in improving skin tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkles. These also improve acne scars and help to fade dark marks, sun spots and freckles. This is an ideal treatment for a very sun-damaged skin, as well as an older skin that shows advanced signs of aging. This peel may be used on a client’s face, neck, chest, back of the hands as well as other body areas but it is not recommended for first time client as there is a bit of down time. Better results have been seen by skin that has been pretreated with lighter chemical peels as well as alpha-hydroxy based treatment products. However, caution should also be taken with darker skin types as there is always a risk of hyper-pigmentation. Clients that have TCA peels done should be monitored carefully post-treatment to avoid unnecessary discomfort and hyperpigmentation. The use of sunscreen is highly recommended to protect the ‘new’ skin as well as prevent further sun damage. GET RID OF YOUR CELLULITE TODAY BOOK YOUR FREE CONSULTATION NOW
Cellulite is a fat deposit beneath the skin. The main symptom is the appearance of lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks and stomach. Skin Centre offers a minimally invasive procedure to treating cellulite. Find out what it is now!
BODYECRACKLETM Non-invasive, advanced cellulite technology is now available at The Skin Centre. BodyeCrackle™ is a revolutionary mousse that assists in improving the appearance of Cellulite and the ‘orange peel’ effect, using the innovative Crackle Technology. What Is Crackle Technology? The impressive application and action of BodyeCrackle™ comes from “micro explosions” caused when the mousse is applied on the skin. Micro explosions are caused by a sudden decrease of pressure creating a stimulation of the mousse and its contained active ingredients. The active stimulation of the mousse increases over time and thus, through the massage effect, efficient absorption is achieved.

Makeup Tips and Tricks Local beauty and fashion blogger, Serishka Perfect winged liner: Create a perfect line Gopie shares some of her tried and tested by drawing small dashes with an eye pencil makeup tips and tricks! on your top lash line and then connect them with short strokes for a flawless look. Brow highlight: Apply a champagne shadow along your brow bone below your Mascara smudge hack: Use a plastic spoon arch. This will define your brow shape and to easily apply mascara to your bottom add a touch of sheen for a striking look. eyelashes. Natural glow: Use bronzer instead of blush on your cheeks, the top of your nose and on your forehead. A sun kissed glow is more natural than a pink one. Great for the summer!
Hack to remove under eye bags: Most of us always tend to use a layer of concealer to cover under eyes but its best to highlight the crease first and then apply a darker shade to the puffy area.
Awaken the eye: We all get those days when we don’t feel wide-eyed and awake, so what I suggest is that you try blue eyeliner which will make the whites of your eyes POP, making them look wider and appear brighter. You could also use a white liner or white shadow in the inner corner of your eyes.
Make your eyeshadow pop: Because I am a brown skin girl the light eye shadow shades will always appear ashy or just would not show so my trick is always use a white eyeliner on your entire lid in order for the colour to POP or just use concealer, foundation, etc. www.stylewithmepretty.wordpress.com.

Car Seats – When do you Move to the Next Seat Up? Car seats are designed to keep your child safe during a crash. The problem is that what is best, safest and affordable is not always clear. So, what do you do? You let the car seat talk to you. The car seat has an “ID” attached to it in the form of an orange sticker. On this sticker will be all the information you require to assist in choosing the correct seat and it must be on the seat for it to be considered legal and certified.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to use your car seat until your child reaches the upper weight, height or age limit for that seat. Car seats are designed to keep your child safe during a specific developmental stage and moving up to the next seat too early will compromise their safety. By law, all car seats must have installation guides on them as well. Blue always indicates rear facing installation and will tell you how long you can rear face in that specific seat. This might be up to 9, 13, 18 or even 25kg. That car seat has been designed and tested safe for that weight range. Use the seat in the rear-facing position up to the upper limit and only then do you switch to forward facing. Red indicates the forward facing guidelines for the seat. The minimum weight given is to accommodate our tall skinny kids that have outgrown the previous group seat in length but not weight. Again, use the car seat up to the upper limits that it is designed for. Source: Peggie Mars, Founder of Wheel Well, peggie@wheelwell.co.za, 072 385 7121.

Gain the Mental Edge on the Field with Sports Intelligence Sports Intelligence SA has been launched by Shane Swan to teach children how to be mentally prepared in sport, improve their technique and help them deal with the pressures they encounter on the field. Whether you are a parent or a sports coach, how often have you witnessed children succumb to the pressure on the field, not think through their next play or not understand how to read a game, let alone their opponent? Sports Intelligence uses easy-to-follow seminars to introduce mental awareness techniques to children, and then follows the seminars with a practical session. Sports Intelligence consists of seminars, school team seminars, holiday sports clinics, private coaching lessons and cricket scoring sessions. It is an all-round approach to the coaching of sport, with a strong focus on strategic thinking, thought processes, mental block break downs and reading a game in play. The seminars have been constructed in such a way that children will not be overwhelmed. Each seminar is like a puzzle piece, helping children grasp the mental thought process behind specific sports in an easy, step-by-step manner, until eventually all the seminars start forming a bigger picture. Each seminar consists of a theory session, where children are introduced to a new thought process, and a practical session, where children will be able to take what they have just learnt out onto the field.

Developing Environments where Special Needs Learners can Thrive
Nearly three-quarters of SA children living with disabilities are currently not in school (The challenges of realising inclusive education in South Africa, by Dana Donohue and Juan Bornman). Adopt-a-School Foundation (AAS) urges all stakeholders to work together to develop strategies to support and educate these marginalised learners. “Schools in disadvantaged communities face many challenges. They are very seldom able to sufficiently accommodate learners with special needs,” says Steven Lebere, Executive Director of Adopt-a-School. “As a result, most of these children simply never enter the formal schooling system, even though many of them are very bright and would thrive in the right environment,” continues Lebere. Where “special” schools for learners with disabilities do exist, they are often severely under-resourced. “The Dept. of Basic Education’s schools act states that all schools must be inclusive of children with special
needs. Teachers are not always equipped to diagnose learners with learning disabilities or intervene effectively,” says Lebere. “At AAS we want to support every aspect of our adopted schools, from the facilities to the teachers to the health and emotional wellbeing of the learners,” explains Lebere. This unique, holistic approach to supporting schools is called the Whole School Development (WSD) model. AAS uses this mechanism to improve and uplift the academic, infrastructural, social and security environment in their adopted schools. WSD ensures that schools have the necessary management and community leadership to support an environment conducive to excellence in both teaching and learning. For more information on Adopt-a-School visit the Foundation’s website at www.adoptaschool.org.za, e-mail info@adoptaschool.co.za or call 011 - 592 6430.

To avoid the next generation making bad financial decisions and to help them enjoy financially fit lives, children need to be taught the essentials about money.
* School readiness programme
If you are a parent, here are some simple ways to teach your children about saving money:
31 Old Mill Way, Dbn North 031 564 7178 • 072 117 4478 carolwatermeyer@gmail.com
Get a piggy bank This form of savings is more meaningful for younger children who can’t add or count too well. Keep the savings visible: try an old jam jar as a savings mechanism and allow them to even draw pictures to illustrate what they are saving for. Take them to a bank to open their account This helps youngsters understand where their money is going and introduces them to the concept of financial institutions. In doing so, you help your child prioritise short-term and long-term savings. Model good spending and saving habits As parents, you have the biggest influence on the way children save or spend. Examine your own spending habits: next time you dash out to get the latest designer handbag or shoes, ask what message you are really sending to your impressionable children.

Show them the money We have to remember that children today don’t see cash and financial transactions the same way we saw them when we were growing up, so we have to consciously make sure that children understand cash as the basis for learning more about money later. When giving children an allowance or income, give the money in denominations that encourage saving. For example if the amount is R50, give out five R10 notes and encourage that at least one be set aside for savings.

Help Your Child Develop Study Strategies Parents and guardians can, and should, help their young children develop good study habits from an early age, to help them achieve academic excellence throughout their school years and beyond. “In primary school, learners will start bringing homework assignments from school, and be required to study for tests. These early years are the best time to guide children and equip them with the strategies and tools to ensure that study discipline comes naturally in later years,” says Clare Pretorius, Senior Deputy Principal at Trinityhouse High Randpark Ridge, a brand of Africa’s largest private education provider, the ADvTECH Group. “Every young person differs when it comes to attention and dedication to studies, homework and exam preparation. Some parents have intrinsically motivated children, while others need to constantly spur them on. Regardless of where a child falls on the spectrum however, parents can guide and equip them to ensure they are able to grow and develop to ultimately realise their full potential,” she says. It is important for parents and guardians to first establish what a child’s intrinsic learning style is – auditory, visual, or a combination of the two. “It is possible that the child learns through doing rather than seeing. The preferred method, if used correctly, will facilitate successful learning.” It is also vital to ensure that children have a suitable study environment. “This refers to both the physical environment and the atmosphere created for the studying child,” says Pretorius. “Daily routine needs to be established, and this includes when meals are served and when family outings are arranged, as children need little to distract them from the task at hand. Preparation of the environment also includes ensuring that all necessary equipment is available.” Once the groundwork has been laid, parents should assist - with varying degrees of involvement – with the actual study process.
other side of the spectrum, many children will need firm encouragement just to get going. These children do well when study schedules are drawn up with the help of parents, with lots of encouragement to get with and stick to the programme.” Pretorius says study programmes must be realistic and give adequate time to each subject. “It must be flexible and make allowances for last minute emergencies such as power failures or illness. Such a programme should be set up well in advance, as that in itself brings a sense of control to the situation for both parent and child,” she says. “There are years ahead of our children that will be filled with homework, tests and exams. If we can engender a positive attitude and a diligence in approach to academic work right from the start, it will go a long way to cultivating positive and diligent young adults who realise their potential.”
“Intrinsically motivated children may need firmness and guidance as to when enough is enough. Avoid allowing children to study into the small hours of the morning only to sit their exams in an exhausted state. On the www.mumsmail.com

Pinecone Spiders: A Creepy Nature Craft for Kids We have a super creepy huge spider living outside our family room window. My boys have been fascinated as they’ve watched it wrap insects, eat, and move around its web. They’ve named it “Spooky” and have asked if they can “keep him.”

They are a creepy-cute seasonal addition ADULT & KIDS’ FANCY DRESS HIRE to the nooks, crannies, and shelves around Mascots, Adults & Kids costumes for school events & parties available our home! Happy Halloween! To make this craft you will need: 4 on Broadway, Durban North • Round pinecones • Googly eyes • Brown 031 563 1561 • 083 258 0635 • 081 470 4661 www.costumecarnival.co.za pipe cleaners • Scissors • Low temperature hot glue gun and glue • Cotton butcher’s twine Wrap four full-length pipe cleaners around the pinecone to make a total of 8 legs. Shape the pipe cleaners into spider legs, adjusting the length with scissors if necessary. Next, attach the googly eyes with hot glue to the bottom of the pinecone. We used images of real spiders as inspiration and learned that most species of spiders have eight eyes! Some species have six, and most ground dwelling spiders have no eyes. Play and enjoy! Invite your child to use cotton butcher’s twine for creating spider webs, or have some good oldfashioned fun with the water-spout! Source: www. fireflies andmudpies.com www.mumsmail.com

Make a worm farm Making a worm farm is a classic childhood experiment that never fails to impress. To make a worm farm get a large plastic or glass container and fill it with soil and plants from the garden. Add a little water to make sure it is moist, then re-home a few worms into the container. Watch as the worms make the new habitat their own, and use the time to talk to kids about the different environments required by different types of species. Bargain Books Book Reviews For children • A Girl Called Owl by Amy Wilson. It’s bad enough having a mum dippy enough to name you Owl, but when you’ve got a dad you’ve never met, a best friend who needs you more than ever, and a new boy at school giving you weird looks, there’s not a lot of room for much else. So, when Owl starts seeing strange frost patterns on her skin, she’s tempted to just forget all about it. A glittering story of frost and friendship, A Girl Called Owl is a stunning debut about family, responsibility and the beauty of the natural world. • One Amazing Elephant by Linda Oatman High. Twelve-year-old Lily Pruitt loves her grandparents, but she doesn’t love the circus – and the circus is their life. She’s perfectly happy to stay with her father, away from her neglectful mother and her grandfather’s beloved elephant, Queenie Grace. Then Grandpa Bill dies, and both Lily and Queenie Grace are devastated. The two are mourning the same man and form a bond born of loss. And when Queenie Grace faces danger, Lily must come up with a plan to help save her friend. • The Perfect Guest by Paula Metcalf. Walter is really a very neat and tidy dog. His house is his pride and joy and he gets quite nervous when guests come round. When his best friend Pansy asks to stay, though, Walter is so excited! She’s just a teenyweeny squirrel after all, how much trouble can she possibly be?! But when Pansy tries her very best to be helpful, things just seem to keep going wrong! Nothing is safe from accident-prone Pansy! Is she turning out to be the worst guest there ever was? For adults • The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne. Cyril Avery is not a real Avery, or at least that’s what his adoptive parents tell him. But if he isn’t a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do, if eccentric, Dublin couple, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence, he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from. • The Park by Gail Schimmel. Rebecca doesn’t expect to make new friends at this stage of her life. But when she becomes mother to little Amy, she finds herself spending her afternoons in the park. There she meets other mothers: first flamboyant, fun Rose, and then single-mom Lilith, whose inner strength is tangible, and whose eyes never leave her toddler. Very soon the women have formed a trio and their daughters begin to behave like sisters. But Rebecca is about to learn that friendship is not always what it seems, and that sometimes you trust the wrong people.
