Winner Grade 1 - 3!
Congratulations
to Phillipa Ratcliffe in Grade 3 at Chelsea Preparatory School with her story titled “The Special Egg”.
the special egg by Phillipa Ratcliffe Hello my name is Hammy hamster , I am going to tell you a funny story. One day some time around April my old friend Squibbles and I were walking in the sunny garden when we saw a yellow, pink and blue egg. It was almost as big as me. We could not see a nest so we took it home. We watched the egg for hours and hours but nothing happened . It was such a hot day so we had chocolate ice- cream sundaes. Then the egg slowly started to roll off the table so I chased after it. Squibbles copied me and ran after it to. It rolled down the stairs and into the fat cats basket. The cat was asleep like a baby (I like to call her kitty because everyone always says: your’e such a pretty kitty or good kitty) How are we going to get the egg with out waking kitty up I whispered to Squibbles. I don’t know he said. Let’s tip-toe slowly over to her and replace It with that teddy bear I said to Squibbles. Okay! As we were tip-toeing Kitty woke up?! What are you doing HERE!! Kitty said angrily. Www-weee jj-just want to get our egg back: said Squibbles. Kitty looked confused? What egg?! That pink, yellow and blue one. I said. Well you better start running! growled Kitty. We grabbed the egg and pushed it up the stairs. It was so heavy Finally we got up the stairs. Squibbles jumped up onto the egg. He ran on top of the egg for a few moments. When the egg stopped rolling Squibbles fell off on top of me. Oow! That hurt!! Just then Kitty jumped on the egg and said: I got ya! But before you could say chocolate Twixxy the dog scared away Kitty. Thank you. Your’e welcome said Twixxy. Now lets go back to the kitchen. When we got there the egg looked like it was going to hatch. Quickly rap the egg in a towel . We watched the egg for a while but nothing happened. We saw something silver peeling off ? whats happening to the egg ? Squibbles said . I THINK I KNOW . . I said. IT’S A CHOCOLATE EGG!!!!! That night Squibbles,Twixxy and I had the delicious egg for our desert . When I went to bed my tummy was full.I thought to my self THAT WAS SUCH AN EXCITING DAY !!!!but I wish the egg was a real one. I can’t wait for another day like this one .

Winner Grade 4 - 7!
Congratulations
to Lwazi Ndlovu in Grade 4 at Durban Primary School with her story titled “Never Give Up”.
Never Give Up by Lwazi Ndlovu It was a beautiful Saturday morning, the sun was shining bright. Lungelo, a grade seven learner in Excellence Primary School, was helping his mother and his elder sister, Mbali to pack stock in his mother’s Tuck Shop. Lungelo’s father was a bus driver and passed away when Lungelo was still a baby. Mhh! what a beautiful day, it gives hope for the future. “Mommy, one day we’ll be packing stock in our big store having our brand like Woolworths. Mommy laughed this out, but Lungelo said “Never Give Up”, everything big starts small. He continued “If you believe, you’ll own it”. Imagine it “Welcome to L & M Shopping Experience”. Mbali said “LOL” dream on boy. Lungelo was smart and full of big dreams. Although being the youngest, he felt this responsibility to take care of his family because his father was no more. His mother’s Tuck shop was dear to him and strongly believed it’s going to grow into a big store in the future. Lungelo’s mom and Mbali often Laughed at his dreams. Like in the Tuck Shop wall he’s written “L & M Shopping Experience – The Exceptional’” In school Lungelo was a brilliant learner but most undermined him because of his poor background. The three girls in Lungelo’s class, Zama, Thando and Gugulethu called themselves “The Glamour Girls” who associate with rich and famous. On the other hand there were three boys, Kwanele, Samkelo and Siseko, “The Cool Big Three.” who were stylish and envied by the school. These groups were mean to Lungelo and regarded him as a nobody. Lungelo’s dream of becoming a businessman was laughed at by The Glamour Girls and The Cool Big Three. Lungelo believed it doesn’t matter where you come from but what matters is where you’re going to. “I’m going to be successful, I know and I believe”, said Lungelo. Kwanele liked Lungelo’s positive attitude. He began spending time with him to share into his wisdom. One day Lungelo was involved in a terrible car accident which left him paralysed by the waist down. He had to use the wheelchair. His mom and Mbali were devastated and lost all hopes. Lungelo fought by all means to adjust to his new life. His peers in school isolated him but his friend Kwanele helped him. I know and I believe I’ll walk again. “I’m going to be successful” said Lungelo. He continued excelling in his studies. Being in the wheelchair did not make him less of a learner. A few years later… One Friday morning a company owner was hiring for his company. As he walked out to call the next person, someone screamed, No! No! No! it can’t be Lungelo. As he turned, guess what, The Glamour Girls and two of The Cool Big Three were in the queue.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately 129 million children worldwide. ADHD, over a lifespan, differs in presentation. Symptoms are dependent on the developmental stage of the individual. Stereotypically, in preschool age, ADHD is characterised by hyperactivity, difficulty in co-operation with peers and non-compliance with instructions. In adolescents, hyperactivity lessens, conflicts with parents, risk-taking behaviours and impulsivity become predominant. In adulthood, inattention remains and may be accompanied by substance misuse, infidelity, the disintegration of relationships with peers and poor adherence to career choice.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month In South Africa, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is commemorated annually in September to encourage women to do screening and prevent cervical cancer. The goal of screening for cervical cancer is to find cervix cell changes and early cervical cancers before they cause symptoms. Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among South African women. Women have a 1 in 42 lifetime risk of cervical cancer (NCR 2014). It can be successfully treated if detected in the early stages, so it is important that women are aware of symptoms and what is normal for their bodies. Symptoms include: Abnormal bleeding between periods, heavier and longer menstrual period, discharge, bleeding, pain during intercourse/after menopause, increased urinary frequency. Risk factors: Cervical cancer is mainly caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a common virus spread through skin to skin contact, body fluids and sexual intercourse. Failure to use protection during sexual

intercourse, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), multiple sexual partners, early sexual debut, and use of oral contraceptives all increase your risk. Women with HIV infection also have a higher risk of developing cervical cancer. Furthermore, being overweight, inactive, consuming alcohol, poor dietary habits, smoking and exposure to chemicals increases risk too. Reduce Risk through Pap Smears Having regular Pap smears can detect abnormal cells in the cervix that could develop into cervical cancer. Screening involves taking a swab of the cervical cells. It is uncomfortable, but painless.
smears per lifetime, starting at the age of 30 years or older, with a 10 year interval between each smear.
Who should have a Pap smear? All women who have been sexually active, should start having Pap smears between ages 18 to 20 years. Every eligible woman should preferably have a Pap smear at least every 3 years.
Note: • It is better to have a Pap smear at a less optimal time, than not at all. • Routine cervical screening is not required for women under the age of 18 years, even if they are sexually active. Dr Des@Home:
“Botox for my Birthday” *20 to 30’s: 10 years ago, it was rare for any twenty-year-old to be thinking of or asking about having Botox. Now, it is not strange at all for a patient to ask for Botox in preparation for their wedding or 30th birthday! Unfortunately, due to long working hours, sun and air-conditioning exposure (and often genetic factors) young patients have lines that stick even when they have no expression. Relaxing the muscle that causes the ‘11’ between your brows prevents the skin from creasing and becoming permanent wrinkles. If you have an expressive face, you may want to start earlier with preventative measures. There are often genetic components too, and once you see the lines that you see in your relatives, you may decide that it is time for a small dose of Botox.
More and more, younger patients are coming in for preventative treatments. Patients often have pigmentation issues or scarring once their acne is under control and ask what they can do to improve these imperfections. They also want to Source: Umhlanga General Practitioners, know what they can do to prevent their skin from www.umhlangagp.net. ageing too soon. At what age should you have Botox? *40+: Patients with a lighter skin colour and harsh lifestyle (excessive alcohol use, smoking, sun-exposure, stress) may want to consider Botox at an earlier age. After 40 most patients have permanent lines on their foreheads and wrinkles around their eyes. At this age Botox makes a huge difference to a woman’s selfimage. It especially boosts the confidence of older moms in the school environment. *30 to 40’s: Too much movement in your facial muscles leads to wrinkling at a younger age. If you have been looking after your skin, wore sunglasses, had limited sun exposure and have good genes, you might only need intervention in your mid-thirties. Around this time, patients often have a constant frown and complain about people asking them whether they are angry or stressed. This causes them to be selfconscious. By relaxing those strong lines, Botox makes a huge difference in how they feel about themselves.

Your Physio Has Your Back
National Back Week: 1 to 8 September 2019 During this week, physiotherapists aim to promote the prevention of back injury through exercise, proper biomechanics, ergonomics, and posture. This year’s theme for national back week is “brain breaks”. A brain break is a short mental break that is taken in regular intervals, be it in the classroom, at home or the workplace for around five minutes, and works best when some sort of physical activity is involved.
4 easy brain breaks: • Neck stretches (up & down/ side to side) • Shoulder rolls (forward & back)
• Alternating knee raises (touch knees with opposite hand) • Chair squats
The role of physiotherapy: Physiotherapists use a variety of techniques to help your muscles and joints work to their full potential by using modalities such as electrotherapy, dry needling, spinal mobilisations and exercise programmes taking into consideration your lifestyle and capabilities. Some common causes of neck/back pain include: • Poor posture • Poor ergonomics • Physical inactivity
• Muscle spasms, strains and sprains • Spinal degeneration • Disc disorders 5 top tips to remember • Don’t sit for more than 30 mins • Change your position frequently • Bend your knees and not your back • Regular core strengthening • Good ergonomics = good poster = No pain! St Mary’s DSG:
Cultivating Remarkable Women
Founded in 1906, St Mary’s is an Independent Christian Girls’ school from Grade R to Matric - offering boarding from Grade 8.
They don’t just instil the values that create young women of character, they inspire young minds to think, cultivating the curiosity to explore their world. “St Mary’s is a school with many traditions and has a strong sense of history and identity. It is important for our girls to feel valued and supported at school so that they believe in themselves and understand that they have a valuable role to play in our community and our country. Being a Christian school, these ideas are reinforced by our motto of “Service before Self, God before All”, which is a constant reminder of our roots and responsibilities,” says Jonathan Manley, Executive Principal. St Mary’s is a place where each girl can flourish and belong - cultivating her curiosity, embracing her successes and failures and developing the character and confidence to thrive in life. Remarkable, inspired, excellent… are not words to cast shadows, but the foundation for a bright future. These are not things you simply become, but things you build towards. We believe that every girl who walks through our gates, walks towards a brighter future.
www.mumsmail.com
We give her a place to belong, a place to grow, in character, in confidence, in conviction. With lessons in respect, kindness and selflessness, That will take her far. At the heart of what we do, is heart. Rooted in faith, in God, we strive to instil life-long values empowering our girls to not only face the future, but thrive in it. We believe in holistic learning. An education that goes beyond the classroom – to the field, the stage, the community. We cultivate curiosity, not just teaching our girls, but teaching them to think. We don’t educate girls for the future, we educate girls to create their own future. Because girls who are inspired become remarkable women. The Critical Link between Extra Mural Activities and Effective Learning
Cindy Glass, Owner and CoFounder of Step Up Education Centres says that extra mural activities that involve the arts, drama, music or sports are essential to the holistic development of young minds and bodies.
She gives 6 helpful tips to encourage your child to participate in extra mural activities:
Be excited about the available opportunities: Help your child to choose an activity that they would enjoy. She emphasises the fact that Consider your child’s strengths children who participate in extra and weaknesses and choose mural activities benefit from an activity that would add value making new friends, finding to your child’s positive growth their talents, developing selfand development. confidence, learning social skills and increasing problem-solving Allow your child to make and critical thinking skills. In the decision: This is not about addition, exercise ensures a what YOU would enjoy or what healthier lifestyle, greater body you THINK your child would confidence, a more positive enjoy. Respecting differences outlook on life and learning, and and preferences in our families reduced anxiety and stress. will go a long way to fostering “Children who are relaxed, an environment of holistic confident and happy are more education. effective learners!” says Cindy.
Encourage and insist on commitment: Unless there is a solid reason for needing to pull out of an activity (the activity is not adding any positive value). This will teach your child valuable skills in responsibility, determination and resilience. Practice makes perfect: Remind your child that learning anything new can take time and patience. Encourage creativity and imagination, determination and effort: Never forget that extra mural activities are there to encourage growth and learning. Your child is not a professional actor, artist, musician or sportsperson. Encourage fun and participation, sportsmanship and integrity. Balance is key to effective holistic learning: Academic and extra mural activities go hand-in-hand. Do NOT expect your children to do more than they are able to. This is just counter-productive and will lead to a negative learning experience. Each child is different, but nobody can keep up a schedule that leaves no room to just rest and breathe. “Just like a diamond needs a variety of processes to become a polished gem. So our children need to participate in a variety of activities to reach their full potential. Go for it!” Cindy concludes. Visit www.stepuped.co.za for more information.

The Lunchbox: Making Life Easier
As a busy working mom I find it is a constant struggle to think of interesting snacks to fill my son’s lunchbox for school. I end up resorting to the same boring lunches every week, as school and work lunches are often made in a hurry before we leave for school in the morning – despite my best intentions of preparing them the night before… Can you relate? Then I discovered The Lunchbox – and everything changed! The Lunchbox is a monthly subscription box service that delivers a box filled with lunch packs for every day of the working/school month, containing a wide variety of wholesome, yummy lunch snack items. There’s a box for kids, a box for adults, a
nut-free option and even one for banters! The Kids Box and Nutfree Box also include a beverage per day! The Value Box is the latest addition to this range, and offers a more affordable option where the snacks are not pre-packed into separate bags, unlike the other boxes where the snacks are pre-packed into 21 bags, one for each working day of the month. I recently received a Value Box from The Lunchbox to try out and I can honestly say it was a game changer for me! It makes packing lunches just that much easier – you just choose the snacks you want for that day, and pop them in the lunch bags. They are great for kids and adults, so you can
use them for school or work lunches. The box is filled with 60 snacks, so you can choose how many to use per day – if you use three snacks per day, it should last you 20 school/ working days. The snacks included in the Value Box are biltong/droëwors packs, mixed nuts, biscuits, dried fruit, health bars, rice cakes, popcorn and pretzels. The variety is great and my son LOVED the idea of these mini snack packs (he’s a great snacker) and immediately claimed the box of snacks as his own. I found it just made packing lunches that much easier - I didn’t have to think about what snacks to include and I didn’t have to shop for snacks either. An added bonus is they are all healthy snacks too! I really loved the convenience. The retail value per box is more than R600 and The Lunchbox is offering the Value Box at R595 including free delivery anywhere in South Africa. You can also order the box as a once-off. I tried to work out the cost of each item and there is no way you could beat this value if you bought each item yourself. So it definitely saves you money as well as time! Static Electricity Experiment They say opposites attract and that couldn’t be more true with these fun static electricity experiments. Find out about positively and negatively charged particles using a few basic items - can you control if they will be attracted or unattracted to each other?
Instructions: Rub the 2 balloons one by one against the woollen fabric, then try moving the balloons together, do they want to or are they unattracted to each other?
the balloon on your hair again hold the balloon close to the can and watch as it rolls towards it, slowly move the balloon away from the can and it will follow.
What you’ll need: • 2 inflated balloons with string attached • Your hair • Aluminium can • Woollen fabric
Rub 1 of the balloons back and forth on your hair then slowly pull it away and look in a mirror.
What’s happening? Rubbing the balloons against the woollen fabric or your hair creates static electricity. This involves negatively charged particles (electrons) jumping to positively charged objects.
Put the aluminium can on its side on a table, after rubbing
When you rub the balloons against your hair or the fabric they become negatively charged, they have taken some of the electrons from the hair/ fabric and left them positively charged. Your positively charged hair is attracted to the negatively charged balloon and starts to rise up to meet it. This is similar to the aluminium can which is drawn to the negatively charged balloon as the area near it becomes positively charged, once again opposites attract. In the first experiment both the balloons were negatively charged after rubbing them against the woollen fabric, because of this, they were unattracted to each other. WIN a Shopkins Hamper!
SUNCOAST
When Shopkins hit the toy shelves in 2014, who could have predicted that they would be at the forefront of the collectables craze and turn into one of the toy world’s biggest phenomena? For those who are not in the know, Shopkins is a range of tiny, collectable toys, originally inspired by grocery store items. With each new wave a different theme has been explored, ensuring the toys are always fresh, relevant and exciting. Each plastic figure has its own recognisable face, characteristics and unique name. They also have special finishes such as translucent, glittery or squishy. “Shopkins is one of those rare toy lines that just keeps giving. Each new wave has fascinated collectors, children and parents. Each character captures the essence of what a collectable toy truly is – interesting, fun and a colourful part of a greater whole,” explains Megan van der Westhuizen, spokesperson for Prima Toys.
