Editor’s Life

Happy Mother’s Day to our Awesome Moms! I have had a very busy couple of months recently but things are now calming down, thankfully! At the end of March we had the 5th Annual PMB Ladies Breakfast, which was held on 23 March 2018 and which I’m pleased to announce was a roaring success! We raised over R41 000 for The Sunflower Fund. I’d like to say a huge Thank You to all of our sponsors and to all the ladies that attended this event – I hope you had as much fun as we did! Thank you for all the positive feedback. After the PMB Ladies Breakfast I needed a couple of days rest, but then it was straight into Easter and the Splashy Fen Festival – what a blast that was, although I did think that I was back in England with the rain…! We went as a family and enjoyed camping out, cooking under the stars and listening to fantastic music – the River Stage and the Acoustic Stage were my particular favourites. A few more days were needed to recover and then it was my daughter’s birthday – yes, I now have two teenagers in the Arthur household! Plus we went to a hilarious play ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’, the Aussie Aqua Circus and plenty of other things thrown in – I have certainly been a busy bee, to say the least! So I’m looking forward to a calm and relaxing May and hope to be thoroughly spoilt on Mother’s Day (hint, hint!) – my kids have already been asking when it is so they have no excuse if they forget! Have a wonderful May and I hope you get to enjoy Mother’s Day with family and loved ones!

Our cover star for May is the lovely, Vivette example to our son”, says Vivette. “Becoming Govender and her handsome, 11-month-old a father has changed my perception on what son, Zieryn. is important in life and the reason for my existence. I am grateful to my wonderful Zieryn’s dad, Alvin, works in power wife for what she has given me and I am a engineering and mom in corporate law. proud dad,” says Alvin. Zieryn is a happy, active and spunky little boy. He’s intelligent, determined and inquisitive. He likes wrestling with his dad and playing with his bestie, Mason. His favourite show is Thomas the Tank Engine. His love for music often has him bopping, singing and entertaining his family.

Vivette’s mom has been most supportive and provided invaluable guidance with baby Zieryn. Zieryn is blessed with loving grandparents and is always delighted to visit them.

This baby boy enjoys exploring and his most recent visit to the aquarium had him fascinated by the sea creatures. He was also surrounded by other children and loved the interaction. Other than new adventures, he loves spending quality time in between his parents, snuggling.

“It is the most rewarding job to take care of Zieryn,” says Vivette. “He is more than I could have imagined and more than I could have dreamt of. It is an unconditional love which fills my heart and life with joy. He is a constant reminder of how magical life is. I adore watching his milestones, watching him grow and doing the best I can for him. I am blessed,” concludes Vivette.

A Mother’s Love

Like it or not, your mom is the person who loves you the most in the whole wide world – ALWAYS. It doesn’t matter what you do, how many times you mess up; that love is unconditional. She will do literally ANYTHING for you. I only realised this when I became a mom myself. That’s how my mom feels about me. Wow. This was a big revelation for me!

sacrifice a mom makes is unlike any other. She gives up a piece of herself when she becomes a mom and changes in more ways than you can imagine.

I remember when my son was born; looking into his eyes for the first time and feeling that instant connection, like I had always known him and always loved him – makes sense, since he is a part of me. But that overwhelming feeling of love has never left, and it never will. No-one can prepare you for this kind of great love that a mother has for her children.

Being a mom is hard, but also wonderful! You would do it a thousand times over just to hear them say “I love you, Mommy”.

I finally understood where my mom was coming from… and appreciated all she has done and sacrificed for us. The kind of

Even though I’m all grown up now, my mom continues to look after me, and my son – in big and small ways. Once a mom, always a mom!

So this Mother’s Day, give your mom the best gift ever – just tell her you love her and cherish her. You will make her heart sing! And to all the moms out there – remember you are amazing! Happy Mother’s Day! By Sarah Mackintosh.

Mother’s Day Ideas Picnic time! Take your mom/wife for a relaxing picnic at your local park or botanic gardens. Pack a delicious picnic lunch, or if you don’t have time, there are companies who sell picnic baskets and menus. Easy ideas are a rotisserie chicken with rolls, baby tomatoes and sliced cucumbers, with fruit juice and a flask of coffee or tea. Spread out a big blanket with some cushions or camp chairs and just have a relaxing time with your mom and family. The kids can run around playing or feed the ducks and birds.

Then you can let mom relax on the beach while the kids and dad play.

Weekend away Book a weekend away for the whole family. It doesn’t have to be far afield – just a change of scenery and pace can do wonders for a busy, stressed out mom. Show her how much you appreciate all her hard work and let her put her feet up for a weekend while you and the family cook and arrange activities. Let mom curl up with her favourite book, or do whatever relaxes her.

Alone time This is my personal favourite idea… sometimes a mom just wants to have some time to herself to unwind and do her favourite things without any interruptions. Dads – take the kids out for an entire day of fun, and leave mom at home alone. If she wants to relax in her PJs and binge watch Netflix, or sleep, or read her book, or have a bubble bath and then go shopping – it’s up to her, as the day is hers!

Road trip Take a drive into the countryside for lunch and some sightseeing. You don’t have to drive too far to see some sights and landmarks in your own town or province, so hit the road and enjoy some fresh country air. Find a quaint country lodge to have a peaceful lunch, and then take a slow drive home, stopping along the way to see places of interest.

Breakfast in bed Pamper session Sometimes it is the Nothing restores the soul small things that make like a good pampering! a mom happy – like Take your mom for a being served breakfast mother-daughter mani in bed. Mother’s Day Recipe If you want to spoil your mom on Mother’s Day – why not make her a delicious breakfast in bed? Try Jamie Oliver’s eggs benedict, three ways, with cheat’s hollandaise. Ingredients • 100g baby spinach • 2 English muffins • 2 large free-range eggs • 1 splash of white wine vinegar • Your favourite chilli jam • 20g cress (optional) Cheat’s Hollandaise • 2 heaped tablespoons free-range mayonnaise • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard • 1 splash of white wine vinegar • 15g Cheddar cheese Topping options (choose one) • 40g thinly sliced smoked ham • 50g picked brown and white crab meat, from sustainable sources • 40g smoked salmon, from sustainable sources Method For the cheat’s hollandaise, set a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water and warm the mayo, mustard and vinegar with a splash of water, stirring occasionally. Once combined, grate in the cheese and stir until it melts into the sauce. Taste and season. Add the spinach and a splash of water to a pan over a medium heat. Allow the leaves to wilt and cook until all the liquid has evaporated. Meanwhile, halve and toast your muffins. To poach your eggs, bring a pan of water to a light simmer, add a pinch of sea salt and the vinegar, then gently add the eggs to the pan. Depending on your pan, a really soft poached egg should take around 2 minutes; a soft-to-firm one will need 4 minutes. When they’re done, remove and place on some kitchen paper to dry off. Spread a thin layer of chilli jam over the toasted muffins. Top with the spinach, your choice of ham, crab or salmon, an egg and some sauce. Snip over some cress, if you like, too. Menopausal Women Need Support at Work

National Burns Awareness Week

Government and employers should do more to support menopausal women who often find symptoms exacerbated and difficult to manage at work, a UK report recommends.

The South African National Burn Safety Awareness Week is from 6 to 12 May. The National Burns Association of South Africa (NBASA) has some important information to share on burns awareness and safety.

The findings indicate that compared to other reproductive stages such as pregnancy and maternity, menopause is not well understood or catered for and many working women feel their colleagues are unsympathetic to their condition. Based on 104 global studies and compiled for the UK government by the Universities of Bristol and Leicester, the report called for more menopause-friendly workplaces including providing fans to counter hot flushes and flexible working patterns so women can cope better with menopauserelated sleep loss.

Burns awareness and safety at home • Have working smoke alarms in your home • Have an ESCAPE plan • Use quick release devices on security-barred windows • Learn at least two escape routes/emergency exits from each room. ARM yourself with KNOWLEDGE • Use the correct equipment (fire extinguishers in the kitchen, etc.) • Keep Burnshield products for burns • Call 10177 for help in a fire situation or 112 on a cell phone.

Hot water or liquids can cause burns • Adjust the temperature of the geyser to 55°C • When cooking with oil, have a lid nearby that can be quickly placed over any oil if it ignites. A wet cloth or baking powder can also be used to smother the flames • Never throw water onto burning oil, it can spread the fire and also cause an explosion • Have a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket “Many women find transition symptoms, available in the kitchen. especially hot flushes, difficult to manage and (they find) that being at work can Electricity can cause fires or burns exacerbate these symptoms.” • Do not overload electrical circuits, especially extension cords • Supplying other Menopause generally happens after 40 and properties or buildings with electricity by is a normal transitional stage indicating the using long extensions, especially if they end of a woman’s reproductive period when cross streets, can lead to electrocution and menstruation stops. Symptoms may include fire • Never use electrical appliances with hot flushes, insomnia, mood swings, fatigue, wet hands, in the bathroom or pool, as depression and water conducts electricity • Always unplug premature hair heat-producing appliances when not in use, loss. especially irons and heaters • A heater must be at least 1m away from anything that may Source: catch fire (clothing, furniture or curtains). Prof Jo Brewis from the University of Leicester said: “Menopause transition has both negative and positive effects on working women, although there is more evidence for the former, including reduced productivity, higher rates of absenteeism and lower job satisfaction.

Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital Honours Working Moms

The day of a working mother is not an ‘8 to 5’ job but rather a full 24-hour shift. It is a reality today for mothers to take on the title of working mothers for financial reasons, career growth and a sense of personal satisfaction and achievement. They are inspirational to those around them.

The month of May also celebrates International Nurses Day, and with the majority of our nursing staff being female, it is especially important to remind these hardworking mothers, wives and daughters of their incredible strength of character which is needed to be a nurse today.

At Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital we are proud to note that we have many working mothers at the helm of the hospital; leading the team and the individual wards, as well as working at floor level. The hospital’s General, Nursing and Pharmacy Managers are accomplished females who balance the equally important roles of providing leadership to the hospital and also running households with kids. We are also privileged to have many strong female doctors at the hospital who are able to service the healthcare needs of the community with great pride.

We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our sincere appreciation to all our staff (male and female) for their dedication, perseverance and loyalty.

Dr Des@Home: Childhood Asthma

Asthma is one of the most common chronic illnesses in children. It occurs when small air passages in the lungs easily get inflamed and overreact to allergens and respiratory viral infections that result in narrowing of the airways (bronchoconstriction). This obstructs airflow and leads to the following symptoms: • Intermittent dry cough that can wake children at night • Expiratory wheezes (a whistling sound when exhaling) • Shortness of breath and chest tightness • Less physical activity than usual • Death If you suffer from asthma, skin allergies or hay fever or expose your child to pollutants (especially cigarette smoke) your children are at risk of developing asthma.

Debunking Myths about Flu and the Flu Vaccine

Multiple Sclerosis: World MS Day

Winter is on its way and with it, come the inevitable and dreaded bouts of flu. There are many misconceptions surrounding flu and the vaccine. Here are a few that have been discredited:

MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL

R100 OFF the cost of your scan (Valid May 2018)

The Absolute Hot Yoga sequence is a combination of Hatha yoga and Bikram yoga, with 50 poses to benefit the entire body, internally and externally. Why the heat? When the body is cold your muscles contract and this increases the risk of injury. As your muscles and joints warm up, they loosen - decreasing resistance to movement. In a hot yoga class the room is safely heated, thereby creating internal and external heat. Body in motion creates internal heat, allowing you to move deeper into poses, challenging your mind and building your strength. This process allows you to sweat and detoxify the body, thereby increasing the heart rate and allowing blood vessels to dilate, which strengthens the cardio system. Heat stimulates fat receptors and facilitates fat loss, hence the weight loss effects of Hot Yoga. The yoga poses help develop, balance and improve overall flexibility - leaving you feeling invigorated, with improved posture and great vitality. Hot Yoga is the perfect practice for everyone, regardless of fitness levels or ability. It’s fun, challenging and leaves you feeling fantastic! After spending time abroad, owner Prathiksha Naidu opened the first hot yoga studio in Durban 6 years ago. She has two internationally certified courses in yoga and has been practicing yoga for 25 years. Her positive outlook on life and passion for yoga has inspired and changed many lives. The Only Cream you will Ever Need

I suffer from the most horrible eczema on my right hand. I don’t know if it’s aggravated by certain foods, stress or whether it’s seasonal, but eczema can leave you feeling hopeless at times. And I have tried my fair share of ointments and even a visit to the dermatologist for cortisone creams that provided no relief! My hand was scaly, itchy and had started to become discoloured… not a pretty sight! That was until I was introduced to Melaskin Remedy by Complete Organics. It was truly life-changing as application of this herbal scented and luscious cream immediately left my hand feeling soothed and shall I say, nourished.

Why the Need for a Tutor?

I am often asked by parents why and when there is a need for a child to receive extra tuition. The role of the tutor is to supplement and compliment the teacher. The only time that a tutor should be teaching is when teaching is not taking place in the classroom.

Why is there a need for tutoring? • Every person hears and interprets instructions and knowledge subtly differently. In classes larger than 12 learners, there is very little time for teachers to effectively assess whether the message that they have presented to learners has been interpreted correctly! Especially in a multicultural and multilinguistic community like South Africa. One of the roles of the tutor is to quickly evaluate whether or not the child has interpreted the knowledge taught, correctly. • Different children learn at different rates, simply because all of us have been ‘wired’ differently. For slower learners the role of the tutor is to keep the learner abreast with the class. For the brighter learner the role of the tutor is to extend the child. Extending the child does not mean working ahead of the teacher but rather exposing the learner to present content at a deeper level. • Remediation. A good tutor will be able to access what knowledge gaps a child has and will be able to close the gaps by teaching and drilling. In a society where children change schools often and where a change of class or subject teachers occurs regularly, knowledge gaps occur frequently, even with the brightest of learners. Choosing a tutor • I have found that the best tutors are very experienced teachers who are passionate about their subjects and are knowledgeable about what is expected by the different

examining boards, IEB and NSC at this moment in time. • I don’t believe that you can tutor more than four pupils at a time, as the role of the tutor is to identify individual problem areas, so choose a tutor who will tutor individuals or small groups! • Tutors need to be people who are very patient and can explain a topic in more than one way. A good tutor is able to determine at what point the child experienced a knowledge disconnect, right the wrong, and use that point to move forward. • Tutors need to be able to praise and build up. As learners are praised so they become more confident. Find a tutor that your child can relate to! • Find a tutor who will be there for the long-haul. Chopping and changing tutors is as detrimental to your child as changing teachers. Often the tutor becomes the anchor in the child’s life as teachers change each year. • Tutoring is not just giving a child extra work and for this reason I do not advocate tutors who only use computers as their source of assessment, teaching, drilling and remediation. • Most importantly a tutor should be working on the work that subject teachers are presently doing, unless there is a need for remediation on past work. In conclusion, tutors should be working together with teachers to bring about the very best for the child.

Healthy Life/Beautiful Life

Bev’s Beauty Since turning 40 and living this hectic life as Editor of Mum’s Mail, I started wondering if my youthful skin was now a thing of the past….I certainly don’t have time to look after it very much! That was until I spoke to Beverley Murray of Bev’s Beauty and Wellness and realised that, with a little help from Bev using her fantastic RegimA Power Peel, I could soon be well on my way to getting my youthful appearance back and boy was she right! I am amazed at the results over just a few months. BEFORE

BEFORE

Bev started me on a 30% skin peel for the first couple of treatments, followed by several 50% peels over the following months. The peels are done every 3 – 4 weeks and I had a course of 6 to ensure the best possible results (although I love them so much that I’m going to have a few more!) The peels are made up of natural acids including malic, lactic and citric acid and are non-invasive. Once the peel has been applied to the skin, the skin can become a little tingly but that’s also when the nice part starts! As the peel becomes active, Bev will massage your face all over to ensure that there is no discomfort. There isn’t any down time either, but you do have to be careful not to go into the direct sun for a couple of days afterwards. After my very first peel, I saw a huge difference in the tone and colour of my skin. Then as the weeks and month’s progressed, my skin just got better and better, with many people saying how good my skin was looking, especially after being prone to blemishes for so long! The fine lines around my eyes have reduced a lot and so have the puffy, dark circles! I would highly recommend that you pay Bev a visit and get yourself a RegimA Skin Peel soon, you won’t regret it! Help! My Child is being Bullied at School! Navigating a world of people can be more challenging than climbing the most treacherous of mountains! Cindy Glass, Director and Co-founder of Step Up Education Centres says; “As people, we are governed by emotions, and, unless kept in check, negative emotions can lead to negative behaviours that are detrimental to others as well as to ourselves. Bullying is a national epidemic and the harmful effects on a bullied child can last a lifetime. If you can remember that we can only give to others how we feel about ourselves, we will understand that someone who has a need to hurt another is hurting himself!”

Teach your child that it is not ok to be treated badly by others. Do not ignore incidents of bullying in the hope that it will just go away. The lower your child’s sense of self becomes, the more intensely he/she is likely to be bullied! Remember that we cannot control the behavioural choices of others but we can control how we react to them. Consider enrolling your child into activities which build confidence. A confident child is less likely to be preyed upon by a bully. Try drama, sports, scouts, dancing, art, debating, etc.

Science Experiments in the Kitchen

Lava Lamp Science question: How does gas behave in a liquid?

Marshmallow Molecules Science Question: What can cause the space between molecules to expand (grow) and contract (shrink)?

Have you ever seen a lava lamp? They are so groovy! Gobs of wax move through lit water. Here we will use science to create our own wax-less lava lamp! Supplies: • Clear container or bottle • Vegetable oil • Water • Ten drops of food colouring (red is best) • Small cup • Knife • Effervescent or fizzing tablets

Often we can’t see molecules moving. In this experiment we will watch molecules expand and contract in marshmallows.

Why it worked: Oil is made up of nonpolar molecules, but water is pure polar molecules. No matter how hard you might shake oil and water together, they will never mix. Oil also rises to the top of the bottle. This is because water is denser than oil.

The outcome: You now have edible play dough as a treat!

Supplies: • 6 large marshmallows • Glass bowl • Spoon The experiment: • 1 tablespoon (15ml) melted butter or Fill the bottle three-quarters full with oil. Mix coconut oil some water and food colouring together in • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar a small cup and add some of the coloured water to the oil bottle, leaving 2.5cm to 5cm The experiment: of air space at the top of the bottle. 7 Ways to Jazz Up a Shop-Bought Cake As much as we’d all like to be the domestic goddess who always has the time (and inclination) to whip up a cake from scratch, sometimes we have to make do with a shopbought cake. Don’t despair – here are 7 ways to make that shop-bought cake look just as great as the homemade variety.

of marshmallows. Once home, ice the cake with a layer of plain icing and then press the marshmallows all over it. You can add a couple of sugar flowers in there too to really spice it up. Get totally fruity A layer of whipped cream over the top of your shop-bought cake scattered with some lovely fresh fruit is a delicious and simple way to pimp your cake. Kiwifruit and strawberries are a classic, but if fresh fruit is in short supply at your place, a tin of peaches will do the trick nicely. Drain well.

Mix it up Buy two store-bought cakes, one vanilla, one chocolate and a tub of ready-made icing. Slice each cake into two and then build a large cake with one vanilla layer, a layer of icing, one chocolate, a layer of icing, another vanilla, a layer of icing and a chocolate cake layer on top. Funnel Golf Toss

Kiddies’ Rides

Funnel Golf Toss is a modified version of golf. This version doesn’t require clubs or acres of grass. It can be set up in the space that you have outdoors or taken to the park. It also makes a great kids’ party game! Materials: • Construction paper • Scissors • Markers • 5 to 18 plastic funnels (one for each hole) • Skewer sticks • Tape • Small ball – ping pong or golf ball Instructions: Cut the construction paper into triangular flags. Number your flags, starting with 1. Make one for each funnel. Attach the flags to skewer sticks with tape. Push the small end of the plastic funnel into the ground to create a golf “hole”. Designate a starting place at a distance from flag 1. Players have to pick up their ball where it lays and not take any steps before throwing. Once a hole is completed, a radius of 92cm around the hole is the “tee box” for the next hole. Each throw counts as a stroke and the player with the lowest score at the end of the game wins. Modification for younger kids: A heavier ball like a golf ball is easier to control and throw. Very small children can be given the advantage of taking steps between throws.

You can make them using any method you’d like. Instructions: Fold your 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock paper in half, cut off one inch strips in various colours using your paper cutter. Fold the two open ends in to make a heart and use your mini staple to staple shut. Repeat to make as many hearts as you’d like. Line your hearts up in a circle and start stapling them to each other on the back side so the staple does not show in the front. Staple a piece of ribbon on two hearts across from each other as shown. If you choose to make a pompom, add it to the centre through the string from your pompom.
