Editor’s Life I’m finding it particularly difficult to be cheerful and upbeat as I write this month’s letter. I have just found out about the sudden and tragic death of the son of one of my advertisers. His death was due to a “game” that went tragically wrong, and as I grappled with the words to find to comfort her, I knew that there was nothing I could possibly say that would ease her pain. The death of a child is a tragedy that is second to none, and suddenly the “issues” I complain about every day no longer appear at all significant.

Meet the Cover Stars World Adoption Day is on 9 November, and this month’s cover stars are a family that is familiar with adoption. Anton and Lariaan Claassens have adopted three daughters, Amarise Lindiwe (eight), Shani Thandi (seven) and Grace Khetiwe (four). Anton is a financial manager and Lariaan is a primary school principal. Lariaan says that her girls are her life, but that parenting comes with challenges! “They are the best of friends and are fiercely defensive of one another, but then they can also spend a whole day quarrelling about absolutely anything. The other things I find challenging is raising healthy ethical individuals in a society where crop tops and skimpy clothes are suddenly acceptable for eight-year-olds, and children play with their cell phones and not with dolls!” Anton and Lariaan do their best to spend lots of time with their girls playing games, being outdoors, taking them cycling and having pyjama parties as a family! “It’s also challenging at times being a successful career woman and a good mommy to my three girls. But I just tell myself I’m not the only mom out there trying her best to juggle life well!”

we have never looked back!” Amarise loves people and wants to be a teacher one day. She loves babies and sport – she swims and is a strong hockey player. She also does ballet and hip hop. Shani is naturally smart and excels in all areas of her school life. She also loves being physical and spending time on her bike. She has a quirky sense of humour and is a delight to have around! She also does hip hop. Grace is the baby of the family. She has a very strong personality and can stand up for anyone, and definitely for herself. She loves to be the centre of attention and can be quite the drama queen! She shares her sisters’ love for dancing and already does ballet. Lariaan stresses that adoption is not as difficult as people think it might be, when you go through the correct channels, and that adoption is not only for families who cannot have children biologically. “You will never regret it! Adoption will be a very beautiful part of your life. In my eyes my children are completely perfect! It would have been a fatal mistake for Anton and I not to adopt!”

Adoption was something Lariaan considered early on in her life and Anton was also open to the idea. “I somehow thought we would have biological children and adopt. We lived in Korea when I tried falling pregnant. After a few months of trying and seeking medical help we decided that we would opt for adoption first and then try the biological way with some medical assistance when returning home. However, after adopting our first daughter, the desire for a biological child disappeared completely. Our children one by one stole our hearts completely and www.mumsmail.com

Billie Boys Celebrates 10 Years Celebrating 10 years of “the finest biltong in all Africa”, Billie Boys continues to offer their customers a broad range of high quality biltong, nuts, and fruit products. Billie Boys prefers to pack their biltong into the traditional brown paper bags to let the product breathe. The biltong is cut into slices that are paper-thin or thicker, depending on the customer’s preference. It can then be spiced with a choice of eight flavours. Some of the most popular are chilli, BBQ, fruit chutney and spare rib. Game biltong is also a good seller. Game is not fatty and is rich in protein – great for people who prefer a drier cut. Billie Boys has recently introduced a freerange product that has no preservatives, no hormones and the beef is grass-fed as opposed to grain fed. Other products available in the stores include dry wors, cabanossi, and chicken and bacon biltong. There is also biltong powder which is ideal for baking, adding to dips and on sandwiches!

The Big Easy Mum’s Mail recently visited The Big Easy at The Hilton Durban for a taste of what’s cooking on the menu and experienced its unique atmosphere. The Big Easy Durban by Ernie Els is South African in nature – it combines several unique spaces, all tied together by inviting rustic elements such as wood-beamed ceilings, beaten copper, rich textured leather upholstery, brushed concrete and handcrafted furniture. The restaurant features a chef’s table and open kitchen, where diners can get up close and personal with chef Fourie and her team, and watch them at work in the heart of the restaurant. A large bar with an impressive wine bottle display, a dramatic floor to ceiling backdrop and a copper bar counter dominates the east end of the space. The Els influence can be seen throughout, with the many personal touches that have been introduced. The lounge area is stocked with Big Easy vintage wines from Ernie Els’ own vineyard, and showcases a feature wall filled with memorabilia, replica trophies and images. In the private dining room, diners have the opportunity to sit down in comfortable style, as if in the company of ‘The Big Easy’ himself.

10 Top Tips for Getting More Organised

GATE AND DOOR SERVICES

1. Before you start organising a space, get rid of things that you don’t need or don’t add value to your life. You will waste energy organising items that shouldn’t be in your space. 2. Look at why you are disorganised to begin with. There is little sense in creating systems if others think they can dump things everywhere! 3. Part of getting organised is creating systems to keep it that way. Getting organised is not achieved by tidying up a space. 4. Label as much as you can – it really takes the guesswork out of where things should go. 5. Don’t put things down – put them away. 6. If you struggle with day-to-day tasks, create a routine. If household admin is done every Monday morning, then you don’t have to waste energy reminding yourself to do it. 7. If you’re a list-maker, don’t have loads of lists running at the same time. Consolidate your lists and your calendar to avoid duplications, double-bookings and confusion. 8. If you work with a lot of paperwork, try to keep it off your desk. Handy products are a wall-mounted document organiser and a wall-mounted pen organiser. 9. Become more creative when purchasing furniture and fittings. If you’re installing a kitchen, make sure you’ve thought of the spacing of the shelves and if you’re buying a coffee table, get one with a shelf beneath it to accommodate magazines. 10. Your ability to get and stay organised is directly related to your inability to make decisions, so become more decisive and stop procrastinating.

November in the Garden Rainy days will cause problems in the garden, as well as keep you indoors! Good drainage becomes important at this time, so check out for boggy areas and standing water – you might have to add drainage pipes or just more rough organic material and river sand to improve drainage. There are many flower seedlings that can be planted now for a spectacular summer and autumn display, while also ensuring that the garden is in full bloom during the festive season. In the veggie patch plant more types of peppers and chillies and continue with small sowings of other veggies. Control weed growth and harvest any ripe vegetables that may be damaged by the constant wet weather. Watch for powdery mildew on the pumpkin family and put out bait for pumpkin fly. Growing perfect roses in a subtropical province requires a bit more care than in others. Spray on any dry day, especially if there has been prolonged rainfall since the last application. Continue with monthly fertiliser applications. Still use 8:1:5 or 5:1:5 for optimum results. Hot Tips: If potted plants are sagging, it could be a drainage problem. Lift onto ‘pot feet’ or old bricks to ensure that drainage holes remain functional. Water plants that are under the roof overhang of buildings. While it is wet outside, they can die from drought!

Dying Of Thirst

Deliche`-Mor Confectioners

Water is our most precious life-giving resource. No creature on Earth can survive without it, yet we have taken it so for granted, that most of our rivers are polluted beyond acceptable norms. With oceans covering 71% of our planet, only 3% of our total water supply is fresh water. That is made up of rivers, lakes, swamps, glaciers, ground water and ice caps, with only about 1.2% of our total fresh water being readily available in rivers, lakes, manmade dams and streams.

The UN predicts a 40% shortfall by 2030, that’s less than 15 years away! Many underground water reserves are already running low, while rainfall patterns are predicted to become more erratic with climate change. As the World’s population grows to an expected nine billion by 2050, more groundwater will be needed for farming, industry and personal consumption if we are to survive. So how does this affect you? If you are not already affected by the current water restrictions, consider the health benefits of drinking pure water that does not have harmful chemicals such as chlorine or fluoride or the harmful heavy metals found in your current municipal water supply. All around us there is water in the air and InnovativeEnviron is pioneering a number of water producing solutions that would supply pure drinking water at the push of a button. They have a number of solutions – a home dispensing unit that can supply you with up to 40 litres per day, or they can assist in moving your home or business completely off the municipal grid. They offer lease terms and financing options. Contact Athol on 084 505 8595 and e-mail Athman01@gmail.com. www.mumsmail.com

What is a True Cosmeceutical?

Dr Deseré Ferreira

In a constant quest for better and younger looking skin, women often fall prey to all sorts of marketing tactics. As a result, one can easily be influenced by those with a limited knowledge of skin physiology or of what true scientific pearls exist to effectively delay the ageing of the skin.

General Practitioner

What is a true cosmeceutical and why can these cutting edge products, coupled with the expert advice of a dermatologist, yield positive and realistic results? A cosmeceutical is a product that combines cosmetic and pharmaceutical properties with biological active ingredients that produce medical or drug like benefits, hence, a true cosmeceutical will only be available at your doctor’s practice or doctorowned medi spa.

A cosmetic on the other hand is basically a hydrating vehicle, lotion or cream with good moisturising properties. This effect will last for only a few hours. These products are available commercially, in salons and in pharmacies. Cosmetics may list the key or current buzz words like retinol or L ascorbic acid but if these active ingredients are not at critical concentrations, they will not make any clinical difference to the skin. That is why true cosmeceuticals can only be kept by a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or certain doctors. For these products to be absorbed and integrated into the biology of the skin, the scientific formulation has to be perfect, as many of these active ingredients are unstable. Lastly, a tip! Look for cutting edge cosmeceuticals with the following active ingredients: Phloretin cf, Ferrulic, and my personal favourite, Resveretrol.

At the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, fit is all important.

An Alternate View to ADHD ADHD is commonly diagnosed in children in South Africa and in most cases Ritalin is prescribed. There are many cases where alternate therapies could assist in the management of ADHD (replacing, or in addition to, medication). A holistic view of children is beneficial, understanding that physics, emotions and mental attitudes are linked. Contributing factors to the development of ADHD are varied. Children’s bodies go through dramatic changes in relatively short spaces of time. Beyond natural growth, we expect them to grow in ability in school and sport. During this learning the brain can learn a pattern that is not 100% correct, e.g. an incorrect pencil grip or slouching. Incorrect behaviours impact the surrounding structures. Any movement that takes the body out of its natural position has the ability to affect surrounding structures. Discomfort results and the children begin to subconsciously adjust position. A child that has “ants in his pants” could be a child that has a learned behaviour that is causing discomfort. It is known by many learning difficulty specialists that core strengthening assists development. The core is more capable of keeping the spine neutral when it is stronger – improving function and comfort. Durban North chiropractor, Dr Seagreen has treated children where behaviour has improved after treatment. Her experience is corroborated by research and by leading psychologist, Dr Caron Bustin (Child Education). A combined approach to treatment of children with ADHD is positively indicated. Children should be checked for reasons behind the ADHD type behaviour and treated accordingly. Comfortable children reach their full potential, sleep better and behave better. Source: Dr M. New X-ray Facility in Durban North

Back to Health Chiropractic, in conjunction with Core Medical Centre in Durban North, has recently opened a new x-ray facility. The centre boasts new digital x-ray equipment and is equipped to handle all general radiography.

Contact: Dr Palmer, 031 – 563 0079, www.durbanchiro.co.za, 20 Gainsborough Drive, Durban North.

WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has a free set of x-rays with Dr Palmer to give away (valid for one year). Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Dr Palmer of Back to Health Chiropractic started his career practising as a chiropractor in the UK at a health centre that had on-site x-ray facilities. It was here that he became familiar with operating the equipment and was able to see first-hand the benefits of having x-rays readily available. He frequently takes spinal x-rays of his patients to determine if there are any underlying problems, and to be more precise in his structural rehabilitation treatment plans. He is also able to take x-rays of any part of the body, and other practitioners at Core Medical frequently refer their patients to him for x-rays. The patients benefit as it is quick, efficient and affordable, and saves the hassle of having to go elsewhere for x-rays.

Healthy Life

The Impact of Diet on the Skin Acne is a disorder of the turnover of skin cells, called keratinisation. Improper skin turnover leads to retained cells, which block the oil glands and pores and trap protein and sebum (your skin’s natural oil) under the skin. Those proteins and oils become food for P. acnes, the bacteria that cause acne. There are hundreds of steps involved in the cycle of skin renewal, of which the foods you eat are components. The body, including the skin, is constantly under construction. It uses vitamins and nutrients from food to repair and rebuild. Food accounts for about 25% of the picture when it comes to acne. The other 75% is influenced by hormones, stress, sleep levels, and where you live. Good skincare also plays a role. There are no real “super foods” when it comes to acne SPECIALIST prevention. DERMATOLOGIST

Overall, promoting healthy skin with diet is all about adopting good Dr Mohamed F. Sacoor MbChB (Natal). FC Derm (SA) nutritional habits. For acne-prone skin, it is recommended that you • General dermatology eat low-fat, whole (not processed) foods and avoid hormone-laden • Paediatric dermatology dairy products and meats, chocolate, French fries, and other junk • Mole screening • Dermatology surgery foods. Trichology: Hair and Scalp Specialist Trichology is a science in the diagnosis and treatment of hair and scalp problems. It is classified as paramedical study covering all body systems, nutrition, chemistry and physiology of hair and scalp. It involves the study of hair care processes, Trichology preparations, massage and electrotherapy. Trichologists are skilled clinicians in the assessment, diagnosis and management of hair and scalp afflictions. They form part of a multi-disciplinary team and work closely with other healthcare providers such as dermatologists, gynaecologists, endocrinologists and rheumatologists etc. Unfortunately the study of Trichology isn’t available in South Africa, making it a scarce skill. This allows for opportunistic companies to capitalise and exploit vulnerable individuals suffering from hair loss. Always verify your Trichologist’s or hair specialist’s qualifications. Hair Aesthetics is the only hair clinic in KZN to have a resident qualified Trichologist through the International Association of Trichology (IAT). They offer honesty and the best treatment plan tailored for each patient they consult, and an appropriate referral to a medical specialist if necessary. One would not allow an unqualified medical practitioner to attend to one’s general health, so don’t risk the health of your hair and scalp. Seek professional advice. Conditions typically seen at a Trichology Clinic: • Diffuse hair loss • Genetic thinning • Bald patches • Hair breakage • Itchy scalp • Scaling or shedding • Excessive oiliness of scalp • Folliculitis Contact Hair Aesthetics for an appointment with Trichologist Reola Bodasing (IAT) on 031 – 201 0843, 142 JB Marks Road, Glenwood, Durban. www.mumsmail.com

Why is The Face so Important? • Your face says everything about you. • You can hide every other part of your body – cellulite bumps and lumps, feet that are less than gorgeous – but you can’t hide your face. • Your face tells a story – even if you don’t want to reveal what’s going on. Sometimes you are suffering and tiredness and stress shows in your face. • Your face speaks for itself – it never lies! Claudette Whitehead, Sh’Zen team leader, believes there are three essentials to looking younger: 1. Learning to breathe correctly increases the oxygen in your body and recalibrates your nervous system and illuminates your entire being, making you look younger. 2. Did you know that as we speak or chew we are also toning the muscles of our face – but the best exercise for our face is laughter (not eating)! It literally lights up our face and stretches the cheek muscles and reduces the flabbiness in the skin.

Students have performed in various professional productions, been cast in national and international movies, achieved international recognition via their examination programmes, and have represented South Africa performing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. With classes covering drama, acting, musical theatre and more, they provide foundation extra mural training for students new to the stage, performance programmes, specialised training, holiday camps, examinations and workshops. The Role of Play In this day and age where every hour seems to be rush hour, it is still of utmost importance to make time for play. Children learn through play, whether they are playing with others or by themselves. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination and dexterity as well as physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Children use play to figure things out, to assimilate emotions and situations and to try new things. Play allows children to create their own worlds and master those worlds. This is one of the reasons that children enjoy playing with toys. They can use their imaginations and create imaginary worlds where nothing is impossible. “Toys are a wonderful way for children to engage in imaginative play and every year, the top toys make their way to the toy shelves. Some of the top toys for this year’s festive season are Bratz, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lalaloopsy, Little Tikes, Atomicons, Little Live Pets, Tekno Kitten, Meccanoid and Leapfrog’s educational range,” says Chiquita Patrizi of Prima Toys. Through play with other children, your child can develop new competencies, become more confident and learn how to be resilient. This interaction also allows children to learn how to work together, solve problems together, share, negotiate and resolve conflicts – all tools that they will need as they grow older. Learning To Be Sun Smart The Be Sun Smart school programme makes sunscreen instantly accessible to school goers and instils vital sun safety habits from an early age. Be Sun Smart, a school programme which installs serviced Nivea Sun sunscreen dispensers at schools in KwaZulu-Natal and provides sun safety education, is gearing up for the Summer season ahead. Temperatures will soon start to rise, and the UV index along with it. This means that we’re all more at risk of damage from UV rays, with children the most vulnerable to sun exposure. “Often mothers send children to school with sunscreen, but it never leaves their school bag. We’re on a drive to get schools prepared and equipped with sunscreen before it really gets hot outside,” says Hayleigh Bott, co-founder of Be Sun Smart.

Be Sun Smart was launched in KwaZuluNatal in 2014 by two concerned Durban mothers, Hayleigh Bott and Donna Short, in partnership with Nivea Sun. The objectives are threefold. Firstly, to make sunscreen instantly accessible when and where it is needed most at schools, secondly, to make sun care part of children’s every day routine and thirdly, to educate children on sun safety. The Be Sun Smart programme aims to make the process of introducing and implementing sunscreen use to pupils far easier for schools. With 44 schools signed up, and roughly 6 775 pupils getting UV protection at school through this programme, Be Sun Smart is gaining momentum in KwaZulu-Natal. Moustaches have become very trendy, and with Movember upon us, here are five ‘posh’ top tips for a classy “stache” party. 1. Décor: For a classy look and feel, think back to the 1920s – draw inspiration from this posh Great Gatsby era by using sparkly gold table runners and elements, paired with black tablecloths and napkins. The black elements will assist in providing a “manly” feel to the event. 2. Snacks: Ask a caterer to provide classy canapés, served by smartly dressed waitrons. Add a candy table in with a classy display of candy in blacks, golds and whites – this will be a huge hit with your guests. 3. Drinks: Cocktails and champagne are the way to go to keep the classy atmosphere, but don’t forget about the gents – perhaps consider a superb local craft beer or two, served in posh beer glasses. 4. Atmosphere: There are so many great local musicians available for private functions these days, so why not splurge a little and bring in a live band to finish off the perfect, classy atmosphere. 5. Entertainment: Lastly, don’t forget a photo-booth and “stache” props so that your guests have a memento of this fabulous evening! Encourage your friends/ guests participate in a fundraising activity during the evening to raise funds and awareness for this very worthy cause that is Movember. For more information on a posh party or wedding, contact Tarryn Livsey on tarryn@poshparty. co.za or 078 200 8578. Visit www. poshparty.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

A Fun Family Outing

Dynamic Parties Packages

As parents of three little ones, we are always on the hunt for fun things to do as a family and just the mere mention of a possible visit to Lucky Bean has my kids nagging daily “are we going to Lucky Bean today?” There is a small charge per child to enter, but this allows them the run of the place, including a full playground with bikes and a dress up corner, toddler lounge, ball pond, sandpit and indoor swing area in the rainproof shed. Lucky Bean is idyllic for parents and kids alike. There is also a party shed to hire and a shop that I just love scratching in – it has the most wonderful selection of dress-up clothes for sale, everything from Batman, Snow White, Princess Sofia and Elsa from Frozen to Toothless from How to Train your Dragon. The kids have been on a mission collecting their good behaviour stickers in order to choose something from the shop. Lula chose a gorgeous Sofia the First dress, Rocco chose a Star Man suit and Cooper was in a Toothless cape faster than I could get it off the hanger! There is a stunning menu with everything from waffles to corn fritters topped with cream cheese and salmon and of course, their renowned cappuccino. Time spent at Lucky Bean always ensures that the kids have jumped, run and swung to their hearts’ content and with milkshake stained mouths, we quietly made our way home.

Something Old, Something New, Something ‘Spaza’ Just For You Traditions, holidays and gifts seem to be the order of the day as November arrives on our calendar. Remembering holiday traditions as the family grows up and getting opportunities to create new memories makes this time of year special in many ways. The idea of going to a spaza style shop in a modern shopping centre will give moms a taste of the old and the new, and provide something different for the family this festive season. Wart and Fish has sourced some lovely classic toys from Melissa and Doug. The classic range has great traditional wooden toys and games. Pound-a-peg remains a popular toy. Spaza-style brooms, wire bicycles, enamel cups, buckets and bowls are all part of the traditional spaza shop. “When we were living in Botswana we decided to have a ‘bush Christmas’. A traditional tree was not available so we found a spiky branch from an acacia tree and made our own decorations from seed pods and dried grasses. We had a lot of fun creating a true African Christmas tree and spending time together on the decorations,” says Tina Wither of Wart and Fish.

Aladdin Grey Street You are in for a treat at this year’s adult pantomime, Aladdin Grey Street, with the announcement of comedian/radio personality/MC, Darren Maule, joining the cast. A morning radio presenter by day, Maule will don a somewhat different public persona, that of the Genie of the Lamp in this year’s grown-up version of Aladdin Grey Street. Joining Maule on stage will be perennial panto regular, Anthony Stonier who plays Widow Twanky, TQ Zondi as Aladdin, Rowan Bartlett as Princess Jasmine, Mpilo ‘Straw’ Nzimande as Genie of the Ring, Katy Moore as Evil Sultana and Clinton Small as the laundry assistant. Written and directed by Darren King, Aladdin Grey Street promises to be a bumper offering of good old fashioned belly laughs and a liberal dose of saucy naughty gags. Take Aladdin, a street urchin, and move his story to Durban. Take his poor longsuffering mother, the Widow Twanky, and put her laundry in Grey Street. Add one evil sultana, one lonely princess, a genie with sangoma powers and a laundry assistant with a naughty name, and you have a local production brimming with fun, nonsense and topical jokes. The show runs from 10 November to 30 December at the Centenary Room, Greyville Racecourse (Gate 15). There are a wide selection of dining options and corporate packages available and tickets range from R130 to R170. Book at Computicket or contact Ailsa on 083 250 2690 or editor.goingplacessa@gmail.com for all details and personalised bookings. Bridge Drive for Charity The 31 Club invites you to celebrate Christmas at their Bridge Drive on 12 November at the Sea Cottage Room, Greyville Racecourse, from 8.30am. Tea, coffee, snacks and a delicious lunch will be served. Tickets cost R250 per person. Seats are selling fast, so you need to book quickly! The 31 Club is a registered non-profit fund raising organisation which was formed in 1962 by a group of women under the chairmanship of Norma Rattray. As the group consisted of 31 volunteers, the club was named accordingly, and membership remains at a maximum of 31 members, who work on a voluntary basis. The principal aim of the 31 Club is to raise funds for charities in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The 31 Club is a very successful organisation, with approximately 98% of all funds raised being distributed to selected and monitored charities, which the club has done for over 53 years. The most important aspect of the charity organisation is that no cash is handed to any charities - rather they establish what each charity requires and then purchase/source the items, deliver them and check on the charities on an ongoing basis. All catering and/or décor for their fundraising functions is done by the members of the club, with different themes each time, and with great attention given to detail and presentation, making their functions well worth attending. There are over 200 “sleeping members” who assist with various functions, offering their time and expertise in the organisation and implementation of their fundraising events. In the last financial year the 31 Club raised over R 770 000 for charities. To book contact Pam Alexander on portland@iafrica.com or 082 457 8554.

Fashionable and Comfortable Baby Wear

SUNCOAST

The ‘mah originals’ baby clothing range has artwork that embraces South African vernacular languages. This is a first for South Africa, as there are only baby clothes written in English, with a limited number in Afrikaans. The only baby items written in African languages are personalised baby items and they only cater for baby names. To introduce this concept, mah originals has started with universal words such as “mama” or “baba” which are interchangeably used in different languages in South Africa. Their babywear is made from 100% soft cotton fabric with special attention to making seams gentle for baby’s skin. The clothing range is for children from 0 to two years old. The leggings have a soft rib waistband to prevent any elastic cutting into baby’s tummy. The baby grows and onesies have front or envelope neck openings which make for easy dressing.

Seline is the “sugar” and Leandri the “spice” and this cookbook is jam-packed with all things nice! Grab yourself a copy now and get cooking! You won’t be disappointed.
