R3 000 Grocery Challenge So last month, we spent under R3 000 on Eat when you’re hungry - not bored: A good groceries - all food. How did we do it? old Michael Pollan Food Rule. Let me keep this simple. In essence, you Grow ‘extras’ in your garden: coriander, spend on food what you want to spend, or cherry tomatoes, basil, spinach/rocket, what you allow yourself to spend. It really spring onion. Those items cost money and is that simple. If I had OFTEN go off in your R1 000 budget, then it fridge. DONT WASTE FOOD: If I’d love to share my my kids didn’t finish their biggest takeaways: school lunches, the lunch boxes were opened and Quality vs Price. Also, give your pantry a good R3 a loaf). clear out - it is all most likely usable. Don’t buy more than you need: The more you have the more you eat. I’m such an automatic ‘stock-upper’ when it comes to basics that we end up consuming (and buying) way more than we need.

Simplify: Eat simply and drink simply. Easy meals, few ingredients - you can make something taste delish with less than you think.

Meal plan: Meal planning not only takes away that frustrating ‘Gah, what are we eating tonight’ thought around 4pm each day, but it removes the spontaneous buying… and it doesn’t need to be complicated - just jot down some meal ideas and shuffle it as you go through the week…

Don’t get sucked into consumer culture: We walk around with our shiny, smooth (tired) credit cards and nonchalantly swipe, swipe, swipe. Put R3 000 in an envelope labelled ‘GROCERIES’ and you will avoid the shops like the plague. We are SO accustomed to buying what we want, when we want it.

Plan your week ahead If there is a favourite gym/group class you can do before or after work during the week, lock that in to your agenda. Not keen to run alone when it’s dark? Then think of joining a running group in your area – or take the initiative and set up regular training sessions with friends once a week.

Networking: How to Convert Your Social Chatting into Business

One of the things that women are great at other than being a mom, a wife, domestic, lover, friend, bestie, aunt, niece, a counsellor, nurse, chef, a career woman or entrepreneur - is networking! Women can talk and women can network and truly teach us men a thing or two. The issue with most men is that they attend events intended for you to mingle and they ‘net-sit or net-eat’ and wonder why their women colleagues walk out with a handful of business cards that result in business later… And with all that networking and hours of talking, despite of course needing to use your full quota of 5 000 words per day, wouldn’t it be great to communicate and be all those roles while making money? As a Networking and Social Media Coach, something I always say to clients is that it’s great to communicate, but how cool would it be if that communication resulted in income? As a career woman or someone aspiring to be an entrepreneur, communication these days most effectively happens in the following ways: • Social media • Coffee dates • Parent school events • Lift clubs • School drop-offs and pick-ups I had a chat with a mom recently about how cool it would be if her communication actions truly resulted in money in her back pocket. She asked me for some ideas, this is what I told her: • Create or join WhatsApp groups that will allow you to talk about business ideas and not just selling your product/service. • Have a girls’ night focusing on business • How about changing your book club into a referral networking space? • Attend networking events with the goal not to sell, but to create contacts and allow those relationships to organically and intentionally develop into business www.mumsmail.com

10

• Ask other moms what they do for careers and intentionally pay it forward and help them get referrals If all else fails… don’t cry, join BNI! It stands for Business Network International and that’s what I did seven years ago. Joining BNI not only changed the turn-over in our business but seriously resulted in success both financially and emotionally. Having a trusted and constant flow of referrals changes communities - to be able to employ more staff, results in one more family from staying homeless, one more family having a better life , better Christmas, better birthday, better school and ultimately changing a legacy. That’s why seven years later, I’m still part of BNI and I don’t think I would ever leave. By Björn Luciano Salsone e-mail: connect@thenetworkingcoach. co.za or call 072 766 2814.

Give Your Children the Building Blocks they Need to Find Balance

Frog Cupcakes These cupcakes are easy to make and are ideal for a girl’s or boy’s party!

Our children are growing up in a different world to the one where we, their parents, spent our formative years. Equipping our children to navigate through their world is one of the best gifts we can give them, and I believe that there are four key tools that will help them identify their best path, and stick to it, no matter what distractions they encounter: confidence, personal resilience, emotional intelligence and self-worth. Confidence Confidence comes from young people being able to ask themselves questions, identify answers, and having the strength of character to act on those answers. This gives them the tools they need to identify the tasks, opportunities and obstacles ahead of them, and to plan a strategy to address them all. Resilience Resilience in children comes from them having confidence in themselves and in their personal space with their parents and families. They’re confident that the future will be fine, and that their family institution provides a backstop for all their decisions. Emotional intelligence Emotional intelligence is being secure in the knowledge of who/whom you are and what you stand for – and it’s not just children and teenagers that need to learn this skill! Our children have strong opinions that they need the space to vent – and should know how to do it with respect. Self-worth Self-worth is a state of mind, and not a competency. It includes being comfortable with what you look like and who you are, and it forms the basis of learning responsibility at every level. By Marlinie Ramsamy, CEO of FranklinCovey South Africa. www.mumsmail.com

Ingredients: • 1 (500g) package white cake mix • Vanilla icing (450g) • 6 drops of green food colouring, as needed • ¼ cup green decorator sugar • 12 large marshmallows • 48 semisweet chocolate chips • 1 drop red food colouring

Method: Bake cupcakes according to the directions on the package. Allow them to cool completely. Scoop 2/3 of the frosting into a small bowl and mix with green food colouring. Ice the cupcakes. Sprinkle some of the green sugar over the tops. Cut the marshmallows in half to make two circles. Dip half of each marshmallow piece into water and dip into the green sugar to make the eyelids. The remaining white will be the eyes. Place on the cupcakes. Use a little bit of white icing to glue a chocolate chip into the centre of each eye for the pupil. Mix the remaining frosting with red food colouring to make pink. Use the pink icing to draw smiling mouths and nostrils or even tongues on the frogs. The kids will love helping you make these! You could even get the kids to decorate these cupcakes as a party activity. Prepare the cupcakes and icing in advance, and then get the kids to decorate them at the party.
