Weighing in on Kids’ Health The 2016 Healthy Active Kids South Africa (HAKSA) Report Card - coordinated by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA), supported by Discovery Vitality – evolves from a collaborative effort of universities and institutions around the country with over 30 representatives formulating the final report. An important advocacy document, the Report Card grades various aspects of activity and eating behaviour in South African children and youth aged six to 18. Developed according to available research, the report builds on the evidence gathered for previous report cards in 2007, 2010, and 2014. The overall grade for Healthy Active Kids South Africa Report Card is a ‘C’ for overall physical activity and ‘D’ for overweight and obesity.
• Most children eat less than one portion of fruit or vegetables per day. The recommendation is five per day. • There are 30 million consumers of fast food in South Africa, up by 10 million in the last five years. • Children watch TV for an average of three hours a day, with significant numbers watching five hours a day. “The 2016 HAKSA report highlights the opportunity we have to enable improved health for our children,” says Dr Craig Nossel, Head of Vitality Wellness at Discovery. “If every individual - parent, educator, or member of the public - makes one positive change in the way they eat or move, we can create a revolution that influences our children for the better.” Lambert says that a unique feature of the 2016 Report Card is that they are launching it to kids. “We want them to take some ownership in bringing about the changes we need to facilitate healthier lifestyle choices. We want them to feel empowered to call for what is, in fact, their human right.”
“On a global scale, less than 20% of children and youth are meeting recommendations for physical activity, and for the first time in history, there are more children who are overweight and obese, compared to those who are under-nourished or stunted,” says Professor Vicki Lambert, who has spearheaded the South African report card initiative since its inception in 2007. “Both these challenges are robbing children of “The solutions to better health for our reaching their full potential, and both children lie in our own hands, in mutual demand our urgent attention.” accountability, from parent to child, educator to families, government to schools In South Africa, the picture isn’t much and communities, and international trade brighter. Kids’ Life
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
I read a saying once that you should listen earnestly to anything your children tell you, no matter what, because if you don’t listen to the little stuff when they are little, they won’t tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them it’s always been big stuff. In this world where there are so many dangers lurking around every corner it resounded with me, because my children wanting to and being able to share every concern with me is definitely something I hope to achieve. But this starts when they are young. Perhaps understanding that to them it’s not so small will help us to understand next time. While you may be worried about whether to take your toddler to the doctor because she’s had a snotty nose for two weeks, or if you should phone the insurance to tell them about the tree that fell down last weekend, issues that seem big in your life, your toddler is trying to decide if she wants the Doc McStuffins mug or the Minnie Mouse mug, issues that seem big in her life. In the same vein, her choosing what top to wear to school is a big deal to her,
even if you’re running late and she’s chosen a sleeveless summer top on a cold wintery day. It’s not always easy to understand how a different juice mug can cause such an impact, especially when they are both pink after all, but just take a minute and see it from her perspective and perhaps you will understand. In our busy lives today with the pressures and stresses of daily living when a toddler starts to assert her independence tempers can flare. But it’s human nature for us to want to be in control of some aspect of our lives. We tell our children what to eat, when to bath, what to wear, and control so many aspects of their life. Let’s try to give them a little control of their colour juice mug and be understanding and see where it gets us. Aside from the smile which will brighten your day, your child will see you understanding how important the little things are to her, and one day she will hopefully share the big things with you too. Christian Women in Business Network Launching in Gauteng The Christian Women in Business Network (CWBN) was launched on 29 April 2017 at the Gateway Hotel in Durban. With Nedbank as a partner the launch was attended by business, professional and academic women from different backgrounds to create a business network for women of faith. The initiative created a local network for sharing business knowledge, inspiration, support and encouragement towards growing and flourishing businesses and careers with Christian values. Due to the success of the Durban launch, the CWBN will launch in Gauteng at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, Pretoria, on 15 July 2017 from 9am to 1pm. “I am excited by this initiative by Bontlebame NPO, which I initially became involved with a few years ago through their Girls of Hope Programme which empowers young girls from difficult backgrounds - ushering them into responsible young women. I’m involved in this Christian Women in Business Network initiative because of its Christian background; for me balancing spirituality with real life and work always results in a fulfilling, balanced life and this is what CWB Network promises to bring to business and professional women,” said singer-songwriter Lira, who was a speaker at the launch. The network also benefits teen girls in impoverished circumstances, steering them towards developing business and entrepreneurial skills, with access to information and giving them the confidence to break the mould of self-doubt, poverty and lack of progressive, successful lives.
