Happy Spring!
And just like that we are heading towards the summer – the evenings will get longer and the days will get warmer – I might get home in the daylight hours again…! And with the warmer weather will come some more family Arthur camping trips! We bought a camping trailer earlier this year and have had some fantastic trips away. We’ve been down to the South Coast and as far North as Kosi Bay – one of the trips was especially memorable as my 12 year old daughter, Evie, came face to face with a Mozambican Spitting Cobra, which was having a lovely time resting underneath a kids’ trampoline at one of the resorts…! Hubby, Andrew, is keen on another Botswana trip, although I’m not too convinced… I am really hoping to go to the White Mountain Festival this month, which is held in the Central Drakensburg, now that we are eager campers. I’ve never been so it will be another first on our South African bucket list! We have an amazing competition to win tickets to this festival so go to www.mumsmail.com/competitions now to be in with a chance to WIN! We are preparing to launch our first ever Johannesburg East Rand e-newsletter in the coming weeks so if you want to find out what’s happening in the East Rand, go and sign up to our e-newsletter on our website www.mumsmail.com. We will feature recipes, craft ideas for the kids, competitions, interesting articles and much more! Cover Stars
Meet the Cover Star Our special cover star this month is Thandolwetho (13 months) – daughter of Portia Mahlangu and Tshepo Maleka. Portia works as a Dental Therapist and Tshepo works as a Dietician. While her parents are at work, Thandolwetho stays with her grandmother. Thandolwetho is an only child – for now! She’s joyful, energetic and entertaining. She tends to be temperamental and stubborn at times. “She has this crazy laugh she does when she knows she’s being crazy. She is more reserved when she’s around strangers and becomes free when she’s with people she’s familiar with. Ever since she started walking she never sits down!” laughs her mom. “Thando doesn’t like sweet stuff; I bet she got it from me! She loves taking selfies - she pays so much attention when we take pictures with our phones,” says Portia. As a family they love playing at home with Thandolwetho’s toys and taking her to the park. “What I love most about being a mother is how I get to love unconditionally, how I am motivated to wake up in the morning even when I don’t want to, knowing that I am doing it for my baby. Being a mother comes with responsibility which is something I never had before - I just lived my life not worrying about anything at all. It’s no longer just about me.” “What’s tough about being a mother is that you worry about everything; when you’re at work and its cold, you wonder if your baby is warm. Truth is, I can’t be with her 24/7 but I wish that was the case. But I am lucky to have her father; I always draw strength from him,” concludes Portia. Written by Sarah Mackintosh THB/42639 THB/42639

The Ultimate VitaFoam Weather-proof Beanbag… I was lucky enough to recently receive a beautiful Outdoor ‘Comfysak’ in a stunning ‘Pool Blue’ colour. It is gorgeous to look at, with its beautiful contrasting piping and is perfect for me to relax in whilst reading my favourite book in my little garden. I actually cannot believe just how ‘comfy’ it is and am having a hard job trying to keep the kids off it – in fact my son even fell asleep on it last weekend, followed shortly by me after he vacated it! I think it is time to invest in another one or two for the kids’ rooms so we can all be happy. As well as the Outdoor Weather-proof Comfysak, they also have them available for indoor use in fabrics from Flokati Fur, Classic Suede to Sophisticated Corduroy, plus they come in nearly every colour of the rainbow!
with air in seconds. It weighs less than 2kg so you can take it into the mountains, to the beach (did I mention it floats?) or camping. You don’t need a pump to blow it up – just add air.
What makes them so comfy? They are all made using Vitafoam (a secret combination of memory and medium density foams), that provide the ceaseless magical ‘bounceback’ found in every Comfysak. All Suede and Corduroy Comfysaks even have a bed inside of them. Yes, there’s a mattress inside the beanbag so that you’re prepared for any sleepover emergency! The Comfysaks outdoor range is fully weather-proof with a stamp of approval from SABS (the only one on the market!). That means you can leave your foam-filled beanbag outside in the garden, on your balcony or porch and it will remain completely waterproof. Just watch out: your dog might adopt it as theirs, just like my little ‘Nunu’ has!
WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has one ComfySak KidSak to give away, valued at R1975. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.
All Comfysaks are custom made to order and produced locally in South Africa. Ordering really couldn’t be any easier, you simply choose your size, colour and fabric, including which colour of piping you like and they will ship it off to you, free of charge, within a couple of weeks. As South Africans love the beach and nature, they have also developed the Comfysak Cloud. Developed and designed in SA, it’s a fully portable lounger that can be filled www.mumsmail.com

Revive Your Life with AquaMAG AquaMAG™ is a multi-mineral supplement that contains calcium and magnesium to the ratio 1:3, which is critical for the optimum absorption of magnesium. Calcium and Magnesium are both a factor in the maintenance of general good health. In addition, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is also added to AquaMAG™ to further optimise the absorption of minerals.
benefits to the human body and aids in the absorption of all minerals.
Another great advantage of AquaMAG™ is its liquid form. As a liquid, no additional fillers and binding agents are needed as with tablets or capsules. The liquid is evenly distributed throughout the digestive system that makes the minerals much more bioavailable, thus further improve absorption.
“I’ve had intense behavioural problems with my son for the last two years (he’s now eight). Over the last year, it’s only intensified, to a point that I was considering boarding school, because he was out of control, and I physically couldn’t handle him anymore.
Benefits of Magnesium and Calcium: ENERGY: Contributes to normal energyyielding metabolism, normal electrolyte balance and reduction in tiredness and fatigue. MUSCLE: Contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and plays a role in the process of cell division and tissue formation. NERVOUS SYSTEM: Contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and psychological function. DIGESTIVE: Helps to metabolise carbohydrates, fats and proteins and contributes to normal protein synthesis. BONE HEALTH: Contributes to the development - especially in children - and maintenance of healthy bone and teeth.
Flavoured AquaMAG is available at DisChem, pharmacies and health shops countrywide. Below is a testimonial from an AquaMAG customer:
In February I saw your ad in a kids’ magazine, and researched more on the importance of magnesium. I decided to give it a try, as I was interested in the effects it could have on improving anxiety and frustration. Fast forward two weeks - I have a new child! I’m speechless at his transformation! He is such a pleasure to be around again (apart from the expected eight-year-old gripes). Outbursts and unreasonable behaviour are almost zero! He’s happy, tolerant and so much calmer. His words to me: “I feel less angry, and feel like I can control myself.”
In addition to AquaMAG, he takes Mentat and Krill Oil Omegas. However, I’m confident to say, that AquaMAG has been the defining supplement. He was on the two other supplements for a period of time, before introducing AquaMAG, and I didn’t notice a drastic change. I noticed the almost AquaMAG™ contains Magnesium Chloride immediate change after the introduction of from a natural source that includes trace AquaMAG. minerals, which improve absorption. Help Your Child Develop Study Strategies Parents and guardians can, and should, help their young children develop good study habits from an early age, to help them achieve academic excellence throughout their school years and beyond.
parents should assist - with varying degrees of involvement – with the actual study process. “Intrinsically motivated children may need firmness and guidance as to when enough is enough. Avoid allowing children to study into the small hours of the morning only to sit their exams in an exhausted state. On the other side of the spectrum, many children will need firm encouragement just to get going. These children do well when study schedules are drawn up with the help of parents, with lots of encouragement to get with and stick to the programme.”
“In primary school, learners will start bringing homework assignments from school, and be required to study for tests. These early years are the best time to guide children and equip them with the strategies and tools to ensure that study discipline comes naturally in later years,” says Clare Pretorius, Senior Deputy Principal at Trinityhouse High Randpark Ridge, a brand of Africa’s largest private education provider, the ADvTECH Group. Pretorius says study programmes must be realistic and give adequate time to each “Every young person differs when it comes subject. “It must be flexible and make to attention and dedication to studies, allowances for last minute emergencies homework and exam preparation. Gymathstics®: Mastering mental math through movement! The Gymathstics® programme is an innovative and developing concept. The Gymathstics® programme was developed by a qualified educator – Rizwana Dinath. The classes began as conventional maths tuition with four learners. Through these classes Rizwana observed that they were aware of the steps involved in mathematics but experienced difficulty with mental maths concepts. To help these learners Rizwana began using brain stimulating exercises to help them make the connection between movements and remembering their mental mathematics. Within a week she saw an immediate improvement and within a month she saw an unbelievable improvement. This amazing achievement sparked an ambition in her to want to share this process with every child. This is what led her to developing the Gymathstics® programme. Rizwana then designed the unique Clip Counter Kit and began with what she calls interval learning,
which is similar to interval training, where students do physical movements to learn and then higher cognitive activities with the Clip Counter Kit. Research has found that learners learn best when they are given a variety of opportunities to learn the same concept in different ways. Over 1 000 learners have experienced the Gymathstics® programme with success and are confident and independent learners in mathematics. They have developed a love for mathematics and are able to understand how mathematics can be used in real-life situations. Gymathstics® was nominated in the top five finalists for Edu Week 2016. Gymathstics® is looking for teachers who are keen to make a difference in the lives of young children and create a love for learning math.
