Happy New Year Happy New Year to all our lovely and loyal Durban readers from myself, Andrew and the whole of the Mum’s Mail Team!
Samantha Baldwin Sales Associate - CEA Cell: 082 466 0459
Well what a start to the New Year this has been – we opened the office on 3rd Jan and got off to a flying start with our calendars and sorting out the distributions. Since then it has been nonstop with getting ready for the Feb issues and I already feel like I’ve been at work for 6 months! All the hard work I spent on relaxing and topping up my tan over the holidays is now just a distant memory!

The start of the year is a time when lots of people make resolutions – ‘I need to get fit, I need to lose weight, I need to have a better work/life balance, I need to move house, I need to change my car…’ Whatever you want to do or need to do, don’t stress too much about it. Yes, it’s good to have a positive attitude at the beginning of the year but if you don’t manage to reach all of your goals, don’t worry! Life is about enjoying it, not beating yourself up for what you haven’t achieved – “manana, manana”, there is always tomorrow!

Meet The Cover Stars
Meet the Cover Stars
Our stunning cover stars are three-yearolds Addison Hack and Paige Stein. They met last year while at the same playschool, and both moms and daughters have been great friends ever since! The girls just adore each other and say they are best friends.
Addison’s parents are Cindy and Ryan Hack. Cindy is a Schools Marketer for University of the Free State and she is captain of the South African Women’s Indoor Hockey team. Ryan is the director of Jimbu Media. “Addi is a gentle little soul who has a zest for life. She absolutely loves animals, especially horses and dolphins. Her favourite thing to do is go to Flag Animal Farm, uShaka and horse riding. Addi loves music and spending lots of time in the pool under water!” says Cindy. As a family they enjoy spending time outdoors – at the beach, in the pool or in nature – with some hockey thrown in too, of course!
Paige’s parents are Steph and Dominic Stein. Steph is a photographer, with a passion for newborn, kids’ and family photography. Dominic runs a small engineering company. “Paige is a caring, gentle natured girl who loves animals and people alike. She loves doing arts and crafts and she is a happy girl who is always making mom and dad laugh with her witty and mischievous sense of humour. She has been spoken to in French since she was born and understands every word and gets to say a few words back to mom and the rest of the Mauritian family,” says Steph. Together they love spending time together at the beach, camping and being in the great outdoors, where there are no complications or distractions. Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Childhood Stress Once upon a long time ago, the abbreviation ‘LOL’ used to mean ‘lots of love’, but no longer peeps. FOMO, TBR, or the act of being ‘unliked’, unfriended or unfollowed – these are no train smash for us all-knowing, lessis-more adults, but what about our young impressionable adolescents? Worldwide, many teens have sacrificed their precious lives in lieu of the overwhelming emotions or stress attached to these forms of social acceptance. For adolescents the struggle is real, the risks are overwhelming. Take a moment to remember your plight as a growing child – there was intense pressure to fit-in and please people. However, this need was easier to sooth as our privacy was maintained and this was solely manageable by us, not “Google”. Research was factual, not opinionated. Expectations were realistic. Life was simple! Today, life is branded. Our young people are too naive to realise the difference between appearance and reality. They are not emotionally equipped to decode the true meaning behind an abbreviated slang. Are we? How often have we been tricked into interactions with distrustful adults? Can you imagine the level of difficulty for a young unexperienced person? As protectors, we parents need to take a stance to be more involved in the emotional well-being of our children. As consistently as we monitor their academic performance, we have to monitor their emotional intelligence. How? Children need to be taught how to cope with the unavoidable life partner to humans – stress! The “School of Heart” team is a non-profit organisation that has created unique workshops for children, couples and families to identify and cope with stress using positive coping strategies. Restore your heartbeat! LOL 2017!

Everyday Life
New Year’s Resolutions Goals are good, but beware of too many. Here’s some advice on setting the right number and level of goals to keep you engaged, not overwhelmed. There is a way to easily manage your goals all the way through the year: don’t set too many. When it comes to our minds, variety is good but it’s a proven fact that too much of it makes it even more challenging to accomplish a desired result. The same works for when we’re setting ourselves in motion to achieve new heights in the year ahead. Printwild has taken steps to first reflect on 2016 and find out the key areas for improvement. They held a staff workshop where team members got to reflect on one thing they got most frustrated about in 2016, two things they would do to change it and three things that they absolutely loved about the year. The results have been incredible: the focus all came down to common aspects which they can now use to develop goals. By limiting yourself to fewer options and goals, you are automatically training your brain to look in fewer directions so it becomes easier to make the decision of which way to go. Whether it’s a small choice or a big choice, the best number of choices to go with is always two to three. Anything more and your brain will concentrate more on remembering the choices rather than the benefits of each one. Head over to the Printwild blog to find out more: www.printwild.co.za/blog. • My first date with Mum’s Mail was in April 2013, when I was just two months away from being a first time mum. Since then, my considerate husband has always brought me a copy. I must say, my fears of being a mother started to subside, especially when I read the cover stories which made me realise how happy mothers are with having to watch their little ones grow, play and learn! My daughter is now three and we both enjoy the issues, not to mention the Party Life pages. What I love most about Mum’s Mail is the style of writing and the approach which is so easy on the eye and real. Thobisa Nkosi.

Family Love Family love – we all live off of it, it is the survival kit that gets you through each day. We all have a family, whether it be the one that we are born into or the people that we surround ourselves with that have been given the privilege of adopting the title of family. Our unique personalities are created from the nourishment that we receive from family. There is no bond that is as strong as that of the bond that is shared between family. I have had the experience of two types of family – firstly the family that I was born into. Our family love was built on dishonesty. They broke me down before I was given the opportunity to build myself up. I was stuck in a family that only took notice of me when they needed something. That all changed when someone walked into my life and took me into their family. For six years I have been a part of a new family, a family that is my comfort and my happiness. Their love and support was unconditional. I was able to finally find who I truly am because of this family, their loving words rebuilt me into the person that I am today. Their encouragement helped me find success, their hearts warmed my soul. Surround yourself with people that make a positive impact in your life and who bring out the best in you. Time heals wounds and with the comfort and love of those good people in your life, you will soon see that blood is no different from water – you can survive off of both.

Curb Your Spending Habits in 2017 Although New Year’s resolutions sound compelling, most people tend to exclude one important financial aspect: Keeping an eye on their spending habits. Take control of your finances by reducing unnecessary spending.
what your income and expenditures are.
Take a look at your spending record Inspect your spending record and spot certain patterns that you would like to discard. Fixed costs will figure prominently on your record. Conveniences, on the other hand, represent variable ‘luxury’ expenses that should rather be avoided. Decide where you can cut back on costs and just do it – stop making excuses.
Exercise self-control Set up some boundaries for yourself. Don’t go out spending unnecessary cash when you need to ‘boost your mood’. And sometimes you just have to suck it up and have a spending freeze – use the grocery items you have available and experiment with new food combinations.
Research before you shop Take a look at saving options via online and printed advertisements before you buy. There are also some nice apps available like SNAPnSAVE (to save some cash) and By following these four basic steps, you can Avocado Meal Planner (to stick to your reduce your excessive spending habits: grocery list) that you can download.
Get your budget ready Without a basic and ‘user-friendly’ budget, you are going nowhere. The key to success is to keep your budget simple. Have a clear indication of
Challenge yourself this 2017 and make way for better spending habits. Nobody says it will be easy but by implementing these four steps, you’ll be able to curb your spending habits as if it is second nature. Source: www.zeeva.co.za.

Enjoy a Romantic Getaway Tucked away on a farm in the Midlands is the haven of peace and tranquillity known as Indigo Fields – a place of gentle moods, quiet reflection and home comforts that combines the attractions of staying on a beautiful lavender farm with an African Day Spa. What makes Indigo Fields so special is the warmth of the staff – they ooze hospitality. Besides the relaxing spa treatments you receive, you also receive three delicious meals, as well as breakfast the next day. The spoiling is incredible! Each couple is made to feel like there is nobody else there – all spa areas are secluded and each one is unique. I was very lucky to be invited with my hubby Andrew, to celebrate his birthday recently. We had such a wonderful time and were made to feel very special. I loved the fact that all the guests were tucked away into different nooks and crannies, to enjoy our meals in complete privacy. It really was such a rare treat. We were given our lunch in the wine cellar, which was a very unique experience, with just one table in the middle of the room, especially for us. The food was delicious and we were certainly spoilt! The massage treatment was an experience in itself, from the minute I jumped into the safari jeep to be taken to the secret location. I won’t say anymore as I don’t want to spoil it for you, you need to go yourself to experience it! Contact Indigo Fields on info@indigofields.co.za or 033 - 266 6101 or visit www.indigofields.co.za.

SARS and Your Small Business
Dignified Divorce V2
Perhaps one of the biggest challenges faced by South African small businesses is understanding and dealing with SARS. The key is knowledge of SARS’ practices and requirements, as well as the belief on your part that SARS wants small businesses to succeed. Communication is the other important key. Communicate with them and they will work with you to keep your business going. Darlene Menzies, CEO of SMEasy, and Kantha Naicker, Managing Director of Evolve Accounting, provide expert advice on understanding and dealing with SARS as small business owners.
Good news! The divorce process is becoming less explosive, damaging and divisive. Most divorces are still conducted by lawyers who have not been taught to negotiate, or to fully understand the broader psychological implications of divorce. They forge ahead on the worn, rocky litigation path, guiding their clients into the rough terrain of the adversarial process. The result is animosity, huge expense, a collapse of communication and often, lasting psychological damage to adults and children.
Using VAT or PAYE as cash flow – The best advice for small business owners is not to use your VAT and PAYE money as part of your cash flow: this is a very reckless way of running your business. What if you have used SARS money to survive? In this situation, avoidance is the worst strategy. Make contact with SARS without delay. Like any creditor, the key is communication; by communicating clearly and discussing your financial situation openly you make it clear that you are not evading your tax obligations. How do you avoid getting yourself into the same situation in the future? It is crucial to watch your cash flow carefully, to manage it closely and efficiently.
There is a better way. It is still dominated by lawyers, but they have introduced new processes. In place of banning communication, they encourage it, but in a different way. In place of fanning the flames of discontent, they help their clients to focus on an ideal future in their new lives. By involving the right professionals and the new, enlightened process, they help distressed families to overcome their difficulties and to embrace the opportunities that change can offer. The result is a growing attitude towards cooperation between parents, a saving of time and money and the preservation of self-respect. Source: Roger Knowles, www.rogerknowlesattorney.co.za.
While it may be difficult for some entrepreneurs to believe, the reality is that SARS really does wants to see small businesses succeed. They don’t want to see jobs lost or liquidations occur. Remember to communicate, rather than avoid SARS if you have fallen behind on payments and, most importantly, recognise that using SARS money is a very expensive and reckless way to run your business and should be avoided at all costs. Inadequate Retirement Provision
Modern 50-year olds need to review their retirement provision more regularly if they want to ensure they have an adequate pension for the post-work lifestyle they desire. This generation is increasingly vulnerable to changes in expenditure which may have a serious detrimental impact on their long-term savings. Martin Wagenaar, wealth management consultant at leading financial advisory business GTC, believes this is due to societal and economic changes that tend to affect people in the 50-year old range more acutely than others. “In our experience, the problem is that most people have not changed their retirement provision and savings strategy sufficiently to adjust for material changes to their expenses.” He believes that some of the main factors responsible for this are: • Elderly, ailing
parents • High education costs • Medical aid premium increases • The adult dependent child He suggests the following: • Speak to your financial advisor regularly from when you turn 50, to do frequent ‘health checks’ on your savings pot. • Have an open discussion with your spouse so that you are on the same page as to your retirement lifestyle expectations • Empower yourself with knowledge of the markets and the economy, and ask your financial advisor relevant questions to ensure you are invested in the most tax-efficient and appropriate savings vehicles for your life stage. • Do not lose sight of the future benefit of a little sacrifice now – scrutinise your budgets carefully and continuously to cut out those seemingly small expenses which add up and eventually make a serious dent in your retirement planning requirements. Create a Trendy Monochrome Space Children spend a lot of time in their bedrooms, so it’s important that their space should be a reflection of their little personalities. While monochrome is the trend of the moment, it can be surprisingly tricky to get right. Here are some decorating tips to creating a stylish, practical and fun monochrome space:
aren’t just made for sleeping nowadays. Decorative pillows, from doughnut shaped ones to ice creams and light bulbs, have proven to be a big trend in kids’ room décor. Prop them on the bed, hang them up or display them on a shelf. • It’s important to make sure that the room both reflects your child’s personality and is fun and young at the same time.
• Create a space that will ‘grow’ with your child, from toddler to teen and all ages in-between. • Choose a specific theme/ mood to carry through the space. You could decorate a girly monochrome room, a tribal/ adventurer themed room or even a modern minimalist space. • Shop local. There are a ton of local ‘Mum-prenuer’ run businesses with a host of Pinterest-worthy products on offer. • Keep enough space for play - add stylish storage boxes to tidy up any clutter Source: Shaa’ista Kathree Jassat, Two afterwards. • The key is to find a balance. East Coast Water Purification East Coast Water Purification supplies and installs water filters and other water purification equipment for both domestic and industrial use. They service the whole North coast of KZN - from Durban all the way up to Kosi Bay. You can also order online and they deliver all over South Africa. East Coast Water Purification believes that purifying your water is a necessity, not a luxury, because even if you are lucky enough to have good quality water in your area, you still need to filter it to remove the chlorine and other chemicals used by your municipality to treat the water - every home should have a water filter. Filtered water is also a lot more economical and eco-friendly than drinking bottled water. Their mission is to make water purification accessible to all South Africans and they supply a wide variety of filters to suit your personal water quality, infrastructure at home or business, and budget. Their Double Under-counter Filter fits neatly under your counter, out of sight and takes up very little space. It comprises of two filters - the first is a sediment filter which will filter out solid dirt particles in the water and the second is a KDF and Granulated Activated Carbon filter. The KDF, which is bacteriastatic, will remove heavy metals and toxins from the water including chlorine, while the Granulated Activated Carbon will improve the taste, colour and odour of the water. Fidget Blankets for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Patients Mary Ann Lobban’s mother had dementia. As she had lost mobility, she struggled to find something to do with her hands and she was very frustrated. After her mother passed away, Mary Ann saw a Facebook post about fidget blankets for Alzheimer’s patients. She immediately knew what she had to do. She looked around her house for some fabric to make a fidget blanket. “I was going to put right the thing I could not help mom with. I was going to supply fidget blankets to those suffering from this dreadful disease,” explains Mary Ann. On her mother’s birthday this year, Mary Ann felt called to give something away. “I immediately thought of my fidget blanket. I put it up on Facebook in honour of her birthday and as a gift for someone suffering from Alzheimer’s or Dementia. I had over 3 500 hits on my page and people requesting orders.”
And so her fidget blanket venture began. “We called it Hands@Work because my mom’s hands loved to work, people who help me have hands at work and those using these blankets are getting their hands to work.” Mary Ann says these lap blankets help to keep the patients’ fidgety hands busy. “Caring for someone with this dreaded disease is a full time occupation and these blankets allow the carer some brief respite, they also calm the patient by giving their hands something to do whilst reducing their anxiety and depression. The blankets offer a great way to provide sensory stimulation through touch and sight,” says Mary Ann.

Dr Des @home Maybe (another) Baby? One of the most important issues for couples is whether or not they should have another baby. This leads to the question: which contraceptive is the best to use for those “in between” months or years until the decision has been made to conceive again? If you plan to have your children close together, a low dose combined oral pill (Oestrogen and Progesterone in one) or barrier methods might be the best solution. This will maintain your period and is easy enough to discontinue when you decide that the time is ripe. The mini pill (Progesterone only) will be the pill of choice for breastfeeding moms. All the pills in the packet are the same colour and you will not have a cycle. For bigger spacing, the Mirena (intra uterine device inserted by the gynaecologist) will last up to five years and the Implanon (Progesterone implant inserted into your upper arm by your GP) will give you a three year break. With any contraceptive it can take up to one year to conceive again – during this year your cycle must be less than 32 days. If not, you might not be ovulating – book an appointment with your gynaecologist ASAP to exclude polycystic ovarian syndrome etc. If you are planning a pregnancy, start taking pregnancy vitamins and folic acid to prepare your body in the meantime. Don’t stop your monthly breast self-examination and yearly PAP smears whilst trying to conceive; stay responsible and healthy. Having another baby is a huge decision for any couple and both parties must be on board. Discuss it openly with your partner and do the planning together!

The Diet Everyone Talks About Since having my son three years ago, I have struggled to get back in shape and lose weight. Then I met Daniela Papini from The Diet Everyone Talks About (Durban North). Wow, what an inspiration! She is an example to her clients and she really lives what she preaches. Daniela helped me through my journey and went above and beyond to motivate me. She even started walking and running with me in her spare time to motivate me – she is a long distance runner herself. She was also very patient with me when I fell off the wagon! Within the first five weeks I lost 5kgs, and 10kgs in total! The Diet Everyone Talks About is not a fad diet - it is a healthy lifestyle that will help you reach your weight-loss goals and maintain them.
healthy, improve your health and as a bonus – you will shed kilos. The Diet Everyone Talks About is a carbohydrate-controlled lifestyle programme that was designed by pharmacists Gert and Josef Coetzee in 1989. Its objective is to stimulate the body’s metabolism to ensure that the body burns excess fat rather than storing it. This is why people on The Diet Everyone Talks About not only lose weight, but also experience no hunger pangs while doing so! The food that dieters can eat is not only scrumptious and easy to prepare, but is also ordinary food that can be bought anywhere.
The Diet Everyone Talks About is not a quick fix but an introduction into a whole new lifestyle. A lifestyle that will teach you to eat

Excessive Online Use Puts Your Immunity at Risk A new study hints that too much time online could put one’s immunity in jeopardy, increasing the risk of colds and flu by 30%. The recently released research study, which was conducted by Swansea and Milan Universities, found that those who spend in excess of four hours a day online for personal use, (over and above work) reported more cold and flu symptoms than those who spend less time online. The study involved 500 men and women between the ages of 18 and 100. According to We are Social (an international social media and marketing agency), South Africans already spend an average of five hours a day online whether they’re on a PC, laptop or tablet and on top of that, an additional three hours could be spent surfing the net on their cellphones, which puts their immunity at even greater risk.

About Dry Skin What causes dry skin? • When oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin • When skin gets exposed to the elements, especially in winter • Genetic conditions such as Ichthyosis Vulgaris • Poor diet and nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins • Environmental factors such as exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps • Conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis or seborrhoea • Underlying medical problems e.g. an underactive thyroid or diabetes • Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines. How can I prevent and treat dry skin? • When you bath or shower, use lukewarm water. Hot water dries out the skin. Limit your time to fifteen minutes or less and only bathe once a day. Bathing too frequently will remove the natural oils from the skin, causing dryness • Avoid using harsh soaps that dry the skin. Use a glycerine soap or aqueous cream to bath. Avoid soaps with antibacterial ingredients • Avoid vigorous use of a washcloth in cleansing. When towelling dry, do not rub the skin. Blot or pat dry • Apply a good quality moisturiser to the skin. The best time to do this is immediately after a bath/shower • Use a sun block of SPF30+ or more daily • Drink plenty of water and take multivitamins and essential fatty acids like flaxseed oil.

Dr Mukund Dayaram is pleased to announce that he has commenced a general practice on the ground floor of the Umhlanga Hospital Medical Centre.
If you are in an emergency situation or just need a general check-up and some investigating to be done, it is strongly recommended that Dr Dayaram should be your first port of call.
Dr Dayaram has spent the last 13 years working in the Umhlanga Hospital Emergency Department. Prior to this, Dr Dayaram had spent six years as a Medical Officer in the UKZN Department of Anaesthesiology. Consequently, he has a wealth of experience in the management of Paediatric and Cardiac patients, as well as patients with Orthopaedic and Sport injuries. Dr Dayaram is a family practice doctor, who is able to deal with all complaints from infections to chronic illnesses. He loves the diversity that a family practice offers, from treating a five year old with an acute tonsillitis to a 70 year old who has joint problems. He believes that patients must be treated with dignity and care and not be queued in the waiting room. Top 10 Superfoods US dieticians have placed green tea among the top 10 superfood trends for 2017, just months after South African scientists announced they had developed arguably the world’s most potent and effective green tea extract. A survey of 1 700 US dieticians on food trends in 2017 showed that seeds, avocado and nuts are still rated the top three superfoods, followed by fermented foods (like yogurt), ancient grains (such as quinoa and wild rice), kale, and green tea at seventh spot. The final three in the top 10 are coconut products, exotic fruits and salmon. Superfoods are extremely nutrient rich and highly beneficial for good health. Research shows that green tea, used for centuries for its health benefits, contains potent bioactive compounds which help fight cancer and diabetes, counter inflammation and promote cardiovascular health. It also supports vitality, detoxification, mental focus, weight management and longevity.
Last year, South African scientists announced that after years of research they had developed the world’s most potent green tea extract known as Origine 8, shown to deliver powerful nutrients and anti-oxidants far more effective than any other dried green tea extract. One Origine 8 capsule delivers the benefits of 20 to 30 cups of green tea. The survey also noted that “mindful” eating – being more conscious of eating habits – would be a trend in 2017, while it provided the following top nutritional tips: • Eat more fruits and vegetables • Choose high-quality, nutrient-rich foods from all food groups • Limit consumption of highly processed foods • Instead of focusing on diets, choose foods based on a wholesome ingredient list and a high level of quality proteins and carbs.

MORNINGSIDE FITNESS CLUB
The first step to living a healthy life is to think positive. The next is the need to motivate yourself to take part in a fitness activity. Nutrition and fitness is essential for healthy living. Just a small amount of exercise every day, whether it be taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or walking to the next bus stop, will make all the difference. You don’t have to be a fitness freak to be healthy; you just have to partake in a small amount of physical exercise every day to maintain a good level of fitness. Not only will it improve your lifestyle and make for a healthy living, but you will also find that this added amount of exercise will also increase your energy levels, meaning you will feel less lethargic during your day. Who Are You? You are mother, teacher, nurse and employee... The list of titles women hold in one single day is endless and if it weren’t for days turning into night, we would keep going. But is that who you really are? Are you really okay with saying you’re a mother of five, with very busy kids between the ages of eight months and 12 years? Or an employee who has lost all passion for her job because it just doesn’t do it for her anymore? Or the friend who is too tired to converse about the latest wine show or shoe sale because she just doesn’t have the energy anymore? You were not made for this.

Be Sun Smart According to the Cancer Association of South Africa, approximately 20 000 South Africans are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Furthermore, there are many myths associated with skin cancer like the common one that people with darker skin are not at risk of getting skin cancer. These myths are not only false but dangerous for one’s health. Dr Carol Hlela, one of only two paediatric dermatologists in South Africa, says it is extremely important for parents to make sure that they protect their children’s skin from the harsh effects of the sun because excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation received as a child increases the risk of skin cancer later in life. The Cancer Association of South Africa’s SunSmart campaign which ran from November to January 2017 released a fact sheet about taking care of toddlers and children in the sun and advised parents and guardians to be extra vigilant about sun protection for their infants and toddlers. “Many parents do not know how to effectively protect their children from the sun and a lot of education is needed around this,” says Dr Carol Hlela. It’s common knowledge that the best thing to do is to always protect from the sun and that one should always be using sunscreen. However, it’s not emphasised enough that the sunscreen use shouldn’t be the only measure we use to protect from the sun, but the use of protective clothing and rather avoiding the sun are equally as important.

Bully Boogie Challenge Bullying can be one of the worst experiences that a child or individual goes through. Whether it is psychological, emotional or physical – the impact of the bullying incident has an enormous effect on an individual’s perception of quality of life. The Bully Boogie Challenge is a uniquely crafted initiative that aims to tackle the consequences of bullying in South African schools. The game recognises learning through lived experience as a critical step in finding a sustainable solution to bullying. The challenge is a fully immersive family game that, through playing, highlights the causes and types of bullying, consequences of bullying and the appropriate responses to being involved in an interaction in which bullying occurs - without labelling anyone as a victim, bully or bystander – a first of its kind. Even after securing endorsements from the KZN Department of Education and many schools, and a write-up from the Pacer National Bullying Centre in the US – this initiative still needs collective support from the public! Everyone is affected by bullying – let’s make a collective effort to combat it. There is no other game like this in the world and it is a proudly South African creation. You have an opportunity to be part of this anti-Bullying Movement, with a chance to win one of ten Bully Boogie Challenge board games. The first ten schools that SMS to arrange an anti-bullying advocacy workshop, will each be awarded a Bully Boogie Challenge. Education Special Feature: Part Two Welcome to our second Mum’s Mail Education Special feature. The trauma and excitement of “Back to School” has now happened and everybody concerned is adjusting to the new routine. It’s quite a stressful time for kids and parents alike, but don’t worry, it will settle down and before you know it, it will be plain sailing. Try not to be too hard on yourself or your kids if there are few hiccups in the early part of the year, it’s how we finish the year that counts! If you do notice your child is acting a little strangely, is unhappy or unusually subdued, particularly in a new class or school then do look for the signs of bullying. We have some great advice on what to look for from Educational Psychologist, Felicity Tonkinson. Unfortunately, bullying is a reality for some children even though they may try and hide it, it must be confronted and you can help. For those parents planning the move from pre-school to primary school we have tops tips from a couple of Durban’s most well-known preparatory schools. Choosing a new school is always difficult but the common consensus is that the school ethos and the family ethos should be in harmony. The study of a musical instrument is considered separate to academic activities, however there is a well-researched argument that it is actually extremely beneficially to brain development, particularly in early years. Children today are competing in a global market for university places and in the job market, so having skills that increase their results by even a few percentage points will be worthwhile. We have an interesting article on the value of
learning music to general education. For parents who discover their child has learning difficulties, we have some guidance from Cornerstone Remedial School. All children have the potential to contribute to society and it’s really about looking after their emotional and social wellbeing whilst they develop as a person. Many parents hope for straight A students but the reality is that this is a small percentage and the majority of children will be somewhere in the middle ground. Realistically, our best approach is to focus on our children achieving all they are capable of. Rightly or wrongly, one of the key measures of success are exam results and we feature some wonderful advice on how to study correctly, to ensure the best results, from Educational Phycologist, Graham Halse. Reading is fundamentally important to learning but in the age of the gadget it’s hard to get kids to read. We have a salutary article from Kumon reminding us how important it is to get kids reading despite the distractions. Finally, the school lunch box is a subject we return to this month following requests from parents for more healthy and nutritious lunch ideas. We hope you find the articles in this special feature interesting and informative and we would love to hear from you with feedback and suggestions for future editions. Please e-mail comments to editor@mumsmail. com.

Top Tips for Choosing a Preparatory School
HAMPTONS PRIMARY SCHOOL
When choosing a preparatory school for your child, it is normal to feel overwhelmed and a bit unsure as to the correct fit for your child. Two schools provide their top tips for choosing a prep school. Waterfall Preparatory School • An important step is understanding what the prospective preparatory school stands for. Do they have a similar moral compass to the one you have put in place for your family? • Does the school have qualified, dedicated teachers who will give your child the adequate time they need each day to grow effectively on their educational journey? And does the class size offer your child the opportunity to gain this one-on-one teaching experience? • Are the school facilities modern, and in a pollution-free, secure area? Does the school offer your children the opportunity to expand in a sporting, cultural and social environment?

Highbury Preparatory School • What is the school’s culture and ethos? Do they have long-standing traditions? Culture takes many years to build and doesn’t change easily, so choose a school with a culture that is a good fit for your family. • Will your child learn better in a monastic or coeducational environment? Research shows the crucial years for learning are the early years and that academic performance is set between the ages of six and 10 years old. Choose the primary school that will give your child the best opportunity to fulfil their academic potential. • Understand the total cost and make sure you can afford it. Look at what the fees include and exclude to make sure you are comparing accurately. Be realistic about what you can afford. Remember that a great education is a life-long investment. Toyland Educare
Toyland Educare
Toyland Educare in Glenwood aims to provide a stimulating but relaxed and secure atmosphere in which a child can develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually – growing in confidence and self-esteem and acquiring the skills necessary for formal education. This is achieved by learning through play and by providing well-chosen educational materials, equipment and a stimulating programme based on themes suitable for the pre-school years. The programme is designed to meet the needs of the children at all stages of development so that he/ she is well prepared to move forward to Grade 1. An enthusiastic team of sensitive, friendly teachers help to create a warm, loving atmosphere, which forms an ideal building block in your child’s pre-primary education. Group-differentiated approach: Although your children are placed in their agerelated groups, classroom management and structure caters for the individual.
Individual emphasis is very important to Toyland Educare and it is their belief that each child must be allowed to develop at his/her own pace. Classroom application: The nature of the classroom and its activity is dynamic, active and consistent. While some organisational structure exists, the child moves constructively from one activity to the next. Each activity provides the relevant expression and enhancement of the child’s particular needs. Grade R: Within the pre-school year, they offer a recognised Grade R programme that enhances preparatory reading, writing and mathematics. Extramural activities on offer are swimming, Action Ball, Catrobat-Kidz, soccer, ballet and speech and drama. For more information contact 031 201 1101 or e-mail toylandeducare@gmail.com.

How to Tell If Your Child Is Being Bullied
Since most victims try to hide the fact that they are being bullied, it is up to us adults to spot the danger signs. In noticing children’s changed behaviour, you can spot the signs that bullying is taking place.
Physical Clues: sudden loss of appetite, difficulty falling asleep, night terrors or sudden and unexplained bed-wetting. Fear of using the bathroom at school causes him to run to use the bathroom as soon as he gets home or he soils himself at school, changing out of his school clothes as soon as he arrives home to hide torn or heavily soiled clothes or unexplained scratches and bruises. Daily stomach-aches, headaches, or simply refusing to go to school.
down and says things like, “I’m stupid”, “I’m a loser and nobody likes me”. He is happy on weekends but unhappy on Sunday evenings and Monday mornings. Educational Clues: Lack of motivation, late for school/class, loss of interest in school, refuses to participate in class, marks dropped for no apparent reason, anxious or distracted in class, feigning illness to avoid going to school, a change in friends.
Parents can sometimes be apprehensive to become involved. This is part of the reason that bullying continues to thrive in schools. If your child is a victim, speak up! And keep speaking until he gets the attention and protection he deserves. Cornerstone caters for learners who have learning and behavioural challenges such as ADHD, ODD, sensory processing disorders, dyslexia, speech and language issues and autism to name but a few. Educators are qualified and highly skilled, applying different learning techniques to their teaching methodologies. Cornerstone follows the CAPS system but content is adjusted to enhance learning and understanding for each learner as an individual. “During an initial query regarding remedial schooling, we often get anxious parents who have only just learned of their child’s diagnosis. While we cannot offer a timeframe as to how long remediation will take place, it is very important to know that we are not a school that offers a quick fix solution, but rather a thought out plan. Once we review assessments, the focus is on the child’s emotional and social well-being first. That being said, we do comprehensive Individual Educational Plans four times a year,” explains Calvin Pienaar. The unique teaching concepts are conducive to learning – ‘brain and sensory breaks’ are a common feature, as well as yoga and other techniques which have drastically improved concentration levels. Cornerstone now boasts a unique Sensory Garden within an environment that aims to create a moral, holistic and practical importance for the learner which is conducive to their learning and growth within the environment and themselves. The Value of Learning Music Music has many benefits and is an enjoyable pastime. I have been teaching piano, recorder, violin, singing and theory of music since the early 80s. During my student years I encountered the writing and philosophy of Emile Lacque-Dalcroze. As early as 1898, Dalcroze realised that students progressed much faster when exposed to music at a young age, especially when studying an instrument. Through songs and experiencing music through movement, children develop healthy concepts of themselves and understand their feelings.

The Importance of Effective Study Techniques Studying is often seen by learners as something to be avoided or to be attempted at the very last minute. Learners will find many excuses not to study! Effective studying will alleviate much of the stress faced by learners in a more demanding school environment. The volume of work is such that it is imperative to properly organise your studying. Studying should be seen as being part of a daily programme, at least for five days a week. Ideally, at Grade 8, one should be summarising two pages of notes per day. This should increase by one page per day per grade, so that a matriculant is doing six pages of study notes per school day. The balance between work, study and play is important.

Study techniques are often haphazard, with learners lying on their beds or listening to music at the same time. It is more effective for each learner to concentrate fully for between 30 minutes and one hour per session. A questionnaire on study habits will determine how learners are currently studying and give a good indication of bad habits that continue throughout their school careers. Study skills can be taught from as early as Grade 3. Learners will be shown how to make effective notes. Often, too much detail is included which is unnecessary. Good study techniques are as important for the high achievers as it is for those who only wish to improve their marks.

Developing a Love for Reading In the Information age we live in, developing a child’s reading ability and their love for reading is more important than ever before, and this can’t simply be delegated to a teacher. Reading and, indeed, reading at a highlevel, will help children in all other aspects of learning as they are able to better comprehend the information they encounter. Wider reading will help improve vocabulary and also enrich a child’s understanding of the world around them. Having a high-level of reading ability includes being able to choose books for oneself, to read books at good speed, and to read a large number of books regardless of their difficulty or genre. By reading more and more, children develop language skills and show improvements in other areas as a result. Children who are just beginning to read, and have found literature at a level appropriate to their learning (not necessarily their age or grade) feel an enormous sense of achievement and hopefully parents nurture, encourage and develop this enthusiasm. It is important that reading in the early school years is a shared activity between child and parent; this fosters the habit and love of reading. As your child begins to read more confidently and tackle more advanced books, continue to talk with them about the books they are reading; above all, reading should be satisfying and fun! At Kumon, they want to ensure students develop in ability, not only academically, but also acquire the mind-set and skills for self-learning. They want to encourage all children to develop a love of and proficiency in reading, regardless of whether they are studying the Kumon English Programme or the Kumon Maths Programme. Alpha Education
The Ins and Outs of Home Schooling According to Trish Delport from Alpha Education SA, home schooling is a growing alternative to mainstream education in South Africa and across the world. “We prefer to call it ‘alternative education’. There are two major ways of home education. The first, according to the law, is that a home educated learner is educated at home. The parent is responsible for the education and the child has to follow a curriculum and a programme of assessment. The second option is sending the children to support centres where they are academically managed and receive tutoring,” says Trish. In today’s times usually both parents are working. This has resulted in support centres mushrooming around the country which, if not registered with the relevant authorities, are illegal. In 2011 the consensus showed that approximately 90 000 learners were home educated, however the department only knew of 5 000 because parents were not registering with the department
because of the act. “Alternative education needs to be recognised in South Africa, the act needs to accommodate support centres and a method of regulating and monitoring of these organisations needs to be put in place,” continues Trish. Benefits of home schooling: • One on one attention from tutors. • Opportunities for alternative education methods such as interactive learning at museums, etc. • Each learner is unique and learns in a different way. Home education allows them to study the way they learn best rather than forced to learn audibly. • Up until Grade 11 there time is more flexible, which is ideal for faster or slower learners. • It is far cheaper than private schools • Parents can be more involved. The Five Love Languages of Children A child’s first teachers are her parents. All parents want the best for their child. Through nurturing, affirming and building a foundation of love, parents learn to effectively understand, teach and discipline their child. A well-loved, disciplined child learns more easily and develops the social and cognitive skills necessary to optimize her performance at school.

GLENMORE, BEREA
The Five Love Languages of Children, written by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell, sheds light on the different ways in which children receive love so that parents can communicate love more successfully to their child. A healthy parentchild relationship requires that the child’s ‘love tank’ is full. A strong parent-child relationship provides the perfect climate for the child’s emotional growth and maturity – a necessity for learning. A child will remember how she felt in a situation and not necessarily all the details of the event. She will respond positively when she feels that she has been treated with respect, kindness and understanding.
Creating the Future
The book identifies five ways in which children receive love, with every child having a dominant love language. The five love languages are: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch. As parents, your challenge is to discern which of the five love languages your child best responds to. Imagine the possibilities if parents and teachers continually spoke the appropriate languages of love to children! Equipping your child with the necessary emotional tools to learn may be one of the greatest gifts you can give her.

Posh Valentine’s Movie Date This February the Posh team have got you covered with a Posh Valentine’s day picnic in your very own backyard, for an unforgettable celebration of love… Here is how to go about setting up your posh DIY Valentine’s Outdoor Movie Night like a pro: • Hire a projector and screen, and choose a few of your favourite movies. Go to extra effort choosing movies that have a special meaning to you as a couple. Remember to provide a basic sound system to complete the “outdoor theatre” experience. • Spread a large white picnic blanket out on the lawn, along with a variety of sparkly silver decorative scatter cushions, and a few large comfy pillows. • Lighting is a huge factor to keep in mind when planning any event setup – set the mood with a variety of hurricane lanterns and pillar candles. A few citronella candles thrown in the mix will help keep any unwelcome mozzies and bugs away. String some fairy-lights in a few tree-branches for ambient lighting. • Pack a picnic basket with a scrumptious dinner for two, and don’t forget your favourite vino. To really impress your Valentine, set up a popcorn bar with a variety of popcorn, spices and some extra snacks. • Finally, scatter some white rose petals on the pathway leading to the movie area for an extra-special touch.

Play Torch Tag Parties are not only about kids – parents also want to relax and have fun with their friends. But while you’re doing that, the kids need to entertain themselves. Here is a great game for the kids to play at night – as if it wasn’t exciting enough to still be up when it’s dark, you can add to the excitement with a game of torch tag. The one chosen as ‘it’ has a flag or something similar to guard, and, most importantly, a torch to hold. The other players spread out around the area and then have to move as quietly as possible towards the flag, using bushes and trees to cover their movements. ‘It’ can move about, but their job is to guard the flag. If they hear anyone they can turn on the torch to ‘tag’ them by shining it on them – and, if successful, that person is ‘out’. They can either stand still where they are, or go to a ‘jail’ area.

The player who captures the flag wins – or if no one manages the task, then the last person left in is declared the winner and becomes ‘it’. Remember, the person with the torch cannot simply spin round and round with it switched on permanently. This is not what we call playing night-time tag – it is impersonating a lighthouse, and the two are very different things.

Candy Floss & Popcorn
Supplies needed: • 3 glasses • Water • Vinegar • Paper towels The experiment: Fill each glass with different amounts of water. Dip a finger into the water and use the wet finger to make slow circles around the rim of each glass. Listen to the sounds each of the different glasses makes depending on how much water is in it. Now wash your hands in vinegar and dry them with the paper towels so your fingers are really clean. Do you notice a difference in the sounds you can make? The outcome: Your glasses will sound much louder and cleaner after you clean the oil and dirt from your fingers. Why it worked: As you rub your finger on the rim of the glass, at first your finger sticks to the glass, and then it slides. This action creates a vibration inside the glass, which, in turn, makes a sound. Then those vibrations resonate together into sound waves, which you hear. As soon as the first few vibrations are produced, the glass resonates. You are making the crystals in the glass vibrate together and create one clear tone. You probably noticed that the glasses with different amounts of water made different sounds and that you could make different sounds louder softer by varying the pressure and speed of your finger. When you washed with vinegar, it helped clean dirt and oil from your finger. A clean finger improves the stick-and-slide action that creates the vibration.
