Going Gold 4 Ethan In 2014, when Ethan Van Aswegen was four years old, he was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma – a type of Sarcoma, which is a cancer of the soft tissue. Healthy Life
Life after Prostate Cancer: How a Men’s Health Physiotherapist Can Help Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in South African men. One in seven men will be diagnosed with this disease. When it is detected early, the survival rates are high. However, the complication from the treatment can be extremely disabling for men and significantly affect their quality of life. Treatment for Prostate Cancer Treatment for Prostate Cancer may include watchful waiting, surgery to remove the prostate (radical prostatectomy) or radiation to the prostate. With a more progressed cancer, chemotherapy and hormone therapy may be included. These treatments affect the pelvic floor muscles. Compromised pelvic floor function can lead to pain, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. A physiotherapist who has done further training in Men’s Pelvic Health can help to manage these complications.
After a radical prostatectomy, 98 to 100% of men will experience incontinence and impotence. While most men will regain bladder control, only 30% will recover from erectile dysfunction. The pelvic floor muscles play an important role in sexual activity and pelvic physiotherapy rehabilitation has proven successful in treating sexual dysfunction. How can Physiotherapy help? Pelvic floor exercises are not as easy as one would think. Diagnostic ultrasound is a useful, non-invasive tool to assess the pelvic floor muscle function in men. This enables the physiotherapist to teach the correct way to exercise the pelvic floor. A Men’s Pelvic Health Physiotherapist will do an in-depth evaluation with every patient to create an individualized management plan. Pelvic rehabilitation is cost-effective, noninvasive and straight forward. Remember not all Physiotherapists have training in Men’s Pelvic Health, make sure your physiotherapist has the correct training and equipment. Christian Brothers’ College Boksburg: Educating For Life
CBC Boksburg offers a seamless, quality education for boys from Year 000 to Year 12 (Matric). The Pre-Primary (Years 000 to 0) and the Primary sections of the College (Years 1 to 3) are characterised by energetic activity, laughter and learning. Our boys are lovingly guided, nurtured and encouraged by a motivated, well-qualified team to achieve their highest levels of development possible, academically and in sport, as well as providing for their spiritual and emotional needs.
Senior Schools, thus making a CBC Boksburg education an enriching experience resulting in a profound and lasting legacy. For more information visit www.cbc.org.za or e-mail admissions@cbc.org.za.
From the youngest in Year 000 to the older boys in Year 3, the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, as well as individual achievement, is encouraged through participation in a variety of sport and physical activities designed for boys at each of these levels. The emphasis is on fun and play whilst the activities pay attention to the development of gross and fine motor skills, as well as visual and auditory perceptual abilities. The efforts of all the boys are recognised as it is vital to build selfconfidence from a young age. Various events are held throughout the school year, reinforcing that learning is fun, creative and challenging. The boys participate with great enthusiasm and imagination. Popular events are the Dads and Lads Cricket Day and the Camp Out for the Dads and Lads held on the College grounds. Dads, “helped” by the lads, put up tents and spend an overnight adventure with their sons. The Matric boys also have a special role to play as role models and mentors, particularly by spending time with the pre-primary boys, reading selected stories to them on occasions. The older boys become “heroes” to these little boys who manage to sit transfixed by the senior boys who are not their dads, and usually ask them “when are you coming back?” The Pre-Primary and Primary School offers the boys a solid grounding and preparation for what is later required in the Prep and www.mumsmail.com
