Put the Life Back Into Your Garden This Winter Winter is looming and now is the time to get stuck into preparing your garden for the cold months ahead.

• Weddings • 21sts • Gift Packs • Corporate Gifts and more!

Lush winter lawn Green, healthy lawn will be number one on your list of challenges this winter. With grass, preparation and irrigation is everything. If you don’t prepare your lawn before winter hits, it will turn brown and dull almost overnight. Compost and growing medium specialist, John Kidger, from Farmyard Organics suggests dressing your lawn before the first frosts fall in June. A good lawn dressing will help to reduce the impact of frost by insulating the lawn, as well as retain water and suppress weeds.

Enquiries 083 381 8483 | tj@tashas-fudge.co.za Shop 11, Jacaranda Centre, Hilton Avenue, Hilton Buy your fudge online: www.tashasfudge.co.za

A splash of colour Add some bright and bold colours to your garden. Autumn is the perfect time to plant annuals like Primulas and Petunias; they are inexpensive, easy to grow and longflowering. Poppies are also a good option for your beds or pots and they come in a variety of beautiful pastels and bolds. Mulch Using mulch is always a good gardening habit, especially in winter. Mulch will keep the soil temperatures at a reasonable level, keep weeds at bay and retain the moisture in the soil, protecting the plants from drying out quickly. Good mulch will also inhibit certain plant diseases.

POOL & GEYSER HEATING SOLAR PANELS SOLAR BLANKETS CHLORINATORS HEAT PUMPS

Watering 101 Kidger explained that one of the most important water-wise principles is to water deeply and infrequently, rather than giving less water more often. Only water in the mornings to lessen the chance of moisture being lost to evaporation. Use sprinklers for your lawn and transfer your bathwater onto your beds.

The community joined in the celebrations, showing their love and support of the elderly. The local MOTHS (Memorable Order of Tin Hats) association also observed the significant occasion by donating 3 walking aids and a wheelchair to Lincoln Haven Retirement Home in honor of Charles’ milestone birthday.

Reaching 100 years old is an extraordinary accomplishment, one that can only be attributed to a life of good health. When asked about this, Charles highlighted a few points that he feels has contributed to his still remarkable good health: • Having a good and caring doctor. • A healthy and moderate eating plan. • Exercise – even at 100 years old he makes it a priority to walk and attends daily exercise classes. • Taking the time to listen to others. • Good care and interaction with others at an old age.

Donate Your Car Seats for Those Less Fortunate

South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) is appealing to the public to donate old and unused car seats to them to be refurbished and donated to families who can’t afford to buy them.

the Dianne D. Studio Sewing & Crafts

July school holidays! Make a “ONESEY” to keep you warm this winter. A day class with a lunch snack to fuel your day.

Linden Smith of Woodlands Primary School, Pietermaritzburg, was the first lucky pupil to receive a car booster seat from SADD, as part of their seat belt awareness campaign.

* Classes for students from 6 years to adults. * Holiday workshops for crafts and sewing. * Sewing machines supplied.

SADD was the recipient of an international grant to undertake a seat belt research project in Pietermaritzburg. The pre survey was conducted in 16 Primary and high schools in the greater Pietermaritzburg area.

084 240 1992 dduckworth@telkomsa.net www.diannedstudio.co.za

It is very important for children to wear seatbelts. Children who are not buckled up, or buckled up incorrectly, run the risk of sustaining severe or fatal injuries. The results of the initial surveys were particularly concerning. Very few children were buckled up, especially in the back seat of the car. SADD is running awareness campaigns in schools and providing life orientation teachers with information to teach road safety to their pupils. SADD recently received a donation of car seats from Wheel Well will be donated to various families in need. To donate car seats contact Charlotte Sullivan at 033 – 347 0103 or charlotte@ sadd.org.za. www.mumsmail.com

5 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe Online

Umg

Teach your children safe social networking: Teach your child these simple facts: • Nothing on the internet is 100% private. • Everything shared on the internet is forever. • Privacy matters; over-sharing online can be detrimental. • It is never okay to provide information to anyone on the internet without approval. Most social sites are designed for ages of thirteen and older. However, even if a child is of age parents should monitor their account use. Don’t allow your child to share any contact details.

Cyber-attacks can be inconvenient, but they can also have far more dangerous results, such as financial loss and reputation damage. Here are some tips to keep your family safe online: Secure your home Wi-Fi Network: Think of your home Wi-Fi network as your front door.
