Editor’s Life

The Proverbial Can of Worms I recently gained at least 5kg eating lots of humble pie. You may have received a bulk generated email from me (or from one of my lovely Mum’s Mail ladies) with the subject line “Are you ignoring me…” (if you responded to the first request to update your details with us, you will not have received the reminder email). Now, while several people thought this was indeed a quirky and amusing way of heading an email which made them want to read it/take note and respond, others did not and were offended by my rudeness (which ranged from mild to severe offence and irritation). I have since done some research and discovered that this is actually a medical condition called SOHF (Sense Of Humour Failure).

The real purpose of the email was to clean up our database, by simply asking you to click and update your details OR unsubscribe from our database if you no longer want to/ need to hear from us. I realise, in hindsight, that my choice of subject line was indeed not everyone’s cup of tea, and for that reason, I apologise unreservedly. I do also promise to be a lot more circumspect when selecting subject lines in the future. In fact, an entire department of “subject line authorisers” has been implemented as a result of my faux pas.

Meet the Cover Stars Shaldon Magurno is a Durban North dad and soccer coach at Juventus Football Club. When he’s not coaching soccer, he is a Senior HR/ IR Practitioner for RAM Hand to Hand Couriers. “I did work as a flight attendant for SAA for 12 years and managed to travel to a ‘few’ destinations around the world! In all my travels I’m yet to find a better country than the one we are currently living in. We’ve got everything we ever wanted and more here! I feel truly blessed to call South Africa my home!”

the only dad there and decided to help out. It turned out that I became their coach and went on a KNVB Coaches’ Course to better myself,” recalled Shaldon. Shaldon is a huge football fanatic and a die-hard Liverpool supporter and he also played football growing up. He said his sons are sports mad and love soccer and rugby. He loves coming home at the end of the day to a house full of love and laughter. “I love being able to be a part of someone’s life and to help positively mould them into someone of substance, and being there for them when they need you.” He said the hardest aspect of being a dad is disciplining your kids and being the bad guy by enforcing simple house rules. “It’s also difficult finding enough quality time to spend with them. In today’s fast paced lifestyle we all get so caught up with our own issues that we sometimes completely forget to spend time with our own kids.” Shaldon advised not to be in a rush to let them go because all those hugs and kisses start to disappear as they get older! Learn to say no to some of their demands. A child who always gets their own way does not appreciate anything. Teach them manners and respect – always discipline your kids with love – be strict but fair! Finally, lead by example – there are small eyes and ears constantly watching how you behave and talk. They end up copying what you do!

Shaldon and his wife Karen have three sons, Braiden (13), Rylan (11) and Callum (8). He says parenting three sons is hectic! “As most parents with boys will know, they are constantly busy playing, moving and up to something. They cannot sit still. It’s for this reason that we’re more out the house than in. We try to tire them out, but we’re the ones who end up being drained at the end of the day!” he said. All three of his boys have been playing club football from the time they were about five years old and Shaldon would always drop them off and wait for them at their training. One day about five years ago, they got to practice to find that Rylan’s coach had quit and they had no one to coach them. “I was Sounds like this Dad has it all figured out!

La Lucia Antique Fair Turns 12! Sandy and Buddy Day started the La Lucia Antique Fair in June 2003 with only 10 traders and they are thrilled to announce that the La Lucia Antique Fair is now the largest antique fair in KZN, with 65 traders who are passionate about their vintage hobby. Both antique enthusiasts, they originally started it as a hobby, with a single table of collectibles at St Mary’s Church in Windermere Road in 2000. Sandy says her love of antiques comes from her parents, who were passionate about antiques. “Thus started my love of beautifully crafted items from a bygone era. The unique art of a vintage Moorcroft vase, the intricate cut of crystal glass, the regal elegance of a Royal Albert tea set, or a delicate, hand painted, Japanese fan brings joy to the beholder, and infinite pleasure to the new custodian of its beauty,” said Sandy.

Buddy and Sandy have great satisfaction in finding new homes for the previously loved treasures that come through them. “It has been a wonderful journey, meeting the most amazing people and being surrounded by the treasures of a magnificent past.” The fair is hosted on the first Sunday of every second month. The theme for the 12th anniversary fair on Sunday 7 June at La Lucia Mall will be ‘Downton Abbey’. You can find them on the lower ground floor from 9am to 3pm. Entrance is free and 40 traders will showcase exquisite vintage collectibles, from crystal, silver and beautiful antique and retro jewellery to Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, porcelain and elegant figurines and even ancient master craftsman woodworking tools. For more information contact Sandi on 082 705 4882.

Donation Alert! Help us care for all the needy older folk in the Durban and surrounding areas, by simply donating unwanted and unused items such as clothing, books, crockery, furniture, etc.

In my job as a divorce lawyer, I see couples struggling in the quicksand of their relationship problems. The more they thrash around, the quicker they sink. If you have problems in your marriage or other close relationship (parent and child relationships too, irrespective of age), it is best not to adopt one of drastic responses. These include shouting, arguing and blaming. None of these has a satisfactory outcome. Nor does the other customary response: the ‘silent treatment’.

How to Cope With Bullying As an Entrepreneur

AK

While professional bullying is something we might expect to come across in a corporate environment, it surprises us more when we experience this as a business owner. But bullies exist in this environment too, even though it is more difficult for this type to flourish. Fortunately, as a business owner, you have more choice around who we deal with and what you have to accept.

& CONVEYANCERS

We are a dynamic Law Firm with 20 years of experience & success We specialise in the following: Criminal & Civil Litigation, Divorces, Ante-nuptial Contracts, Conveyancing, Administration of Deceased Estates, Mediation Kindly call us today to assist you on (031) 566 1083 / 083 459 4366 or Email: anisakhan1@telkomsa.net www.anisakhanattorneys.co.za Main Office situated at: Suite 131, Ridgeton Towers, 6 Aurora Drive, Umhlanga Ridge Offices at: Central Durban & Verulam

In developing a strategy around how to deal effectively with these bullies, consider the following: • What they look like: Entrepreneurial bullies come in all shapes and sizes and, often (not always), they only strike once the relationship foundation has already been established. Bullies should not be confused with those naturally aggressive by nature. • Why they act this way: The only reason you need to concern yourself with is “because they can”. You choose whether or not to facilitate their behaviour. • How to respond: You should hear them out and consider your response carefully before engaging. Never get drawn into an aggressive argument where everyone’s talking and no one’s listening. Once you have considered the situation, you need to draw a line, stay behind that line and assertively confirm your position if they cross it. If they persevere with inappropriate behaviour, you should cease all communications. If there is a payment or services dispute, you can arrange to have a mediator assist the process. • Don’t take it personally: Your business is more important than your feelings. While the attack might feel personal or the situation completely unfair, you must respond in an emotionally intelligent manner to do what is best for your business. The Importance of Healthy Eating

TAFTA MEALS ON WHEELS

We all lead a crazy pace of life, but we need to stop for a minute and check that our families are all eating a healthy balanced diet. I was inspired to write this article after watching a Saturday morning kids’ rugby match. The boys in the team asked the one player; “What did you eat for breakfast to score so many tries?” “Pronutro and muesli,” was the reply. “Oh, so I guess cold pizza and cocoa pops won’t do the trick then!”

Here are some helpful tips to see if your family are on track to a healthy diet: • How often do you eat convenience, already prepared store meals? Home cooked meals are far more nutritious and have less salt content and are generally healthier. • Do your children lack energy and are they often tired? Check the amount of wheat that is being eaten – too much wheat can drop energy levels – at least let them eat low GI foods. • The more raw foods we eat the healthier we are – try and include at least one natural raw fruit in the daily lunch box or a few carrot or cucumber sticks. Our evening vegetables do not always have to be cooked. Try to reduce cooking time as this helps maintain more vitamins and minerals in the vegetables. • Treats are great, and do not always have to be bad for us – watch this space next month for a delicious carrot and bran muffin recipe. You won’t be disappointed and neither will the kids!

Winter Wonderland

COLLECTOR’S WORLD

It is Winter, but that doesn’t mean you have to hide inside! Throw a Winter wonderland event to heat things up! Posh Party shares some HOT tips for a Winter party. • Design your menu around foods that will warm your guests up! Choose hot meals such as pastas, soups, curries or a lamb shank. • Have a selection of red wines, cherries, brandies and whiskeys to warm your guests on arrival and/or after they’ve finished dinner. • Use white or silver colours for table decorative items for a Winter snow-like feel. Alternatively select deep colours such as browns, oranges and reds. • If you have a fireplace or braai area, turn it up! An outside boma fire pit is always inviting. Don’t forget the blankets and roasted marshmallows on sticks! • If you want to try forget about the cold, design a theme around Morocco, Mexico or Caribbean Islands to disguise the Winter coldness! Spice things up with foods, décor, music and drinks.

Edible Gardening: Soup up June Suppers The cold Winter nights are setting in quite regularly by now and warm comfort food is one of the things every South African looks forward to during these chilly times. With soups being an all-time Winter favourite, nipping out into your garden (instead of up to the shops) to pull some home grown edibles is ideal. Not only is it quicker, but will also make for a more flavourful meal. Potatoes, leeks and thyme make great ingredients for a yummy soup. Potatoes: Most recipes call for fully grown potatoes but if you’re after some baby potatoes, then you should look at digging them up when the leaves of your plant start turning yellow. The yellowing leaves are also a sign that it’s time to slow down on the watering to allow your potatoes to mature underground. As soon as the entire plant has died back, you can harvest all your tatties and store them in a cool, dark place indoors. Leeks: Ideally your leeks should be at least two centimetres thick before harvesting and the bigger they get, the more flavour they’ll have, so harvest only what you need until the danger of frost becomes imminent. Remember to loosen the soil around them instead of just grabbing and pulling them out, as they are quite prone to breaking off in the soil with that approach. Thyme: Thyme can be harvested all year round so no kitchen garden has an excuse to be without some. Remember that Winter time slows the growth down, don’t harvest vigorously or your plant may not recover sufficiently to survive.

Healthy Life

Is Chiropractic Only For Back Pain? In my experience people most often see a Chiropractor when their back or neck is sore, but are often surprised to find out that Chiropractors can help with so much more.

If you are having problems that are not responding to conventional care and just aren’t getting better, maybe you would benefit from seeing a Chiropractor.

The shape and alignment of your spine directly impacts the functioning of your nervous system, and it’s your nervous system that controls everything: your health, what you feel and even how you heal.

Written by Dr David Palmer, 031 – 563 3143, Back to Health Chiropractic, 20 Gainsborough Drive, Core Medical Centre.

A Chiropractor’s job is to make sure your spine is in the best possible shape so that it functions at its best, and puts the least possible strain on your nervous system. When your nervous system functions at its best, you function at your best. I have seen people who have battled with insomnia, depression, sinus troubles and all sorts of other health conditions see improvements soon after starting a plan of chiropractic care.

One of my most memorable cases was of a young man who came to see me because of terrible posture, and for the previous year he had also battled with a skin rash on his arms and neck that just wasn’t responding to any of the creams and medications he was using. We put him on a plan to correct his posture and as his posture improved, so did his skin rash.

OverDrive Sports Supplement The goal of any physically active person is to increase their energy and performance and to decrease recovery time after exercise. OverDrive fits in; it is specially designed for individuals who engage in optimal athletic performance, providing B-vitamins, antioxidants, mineral cofactors, proteolytic enzymes, and electrolytes for energy metabolism and post exercise muscle recovery. OverDrive’s can provide assistance throughout your workout and recovery in a number of beneficial ways. • OverDrive aids in replacing nutrients lost by exertion and exercise. This may enable you to increase the intensity and length of your workout and reduce the recovery time required afterwards. • By maximising general endurance, you can achieve your goals and lessen the unwanted side effects of physical exertion. • OverDrive provides all of the B-vitamins and essential nutrients (i.e. Chromium and

Magnesium) to promote optimal energy metabolism and athletic performance during exercise. • OverDrive helps combat free radical exposure normally created during exercise sessions. It contains vitamin C & E, Grape Seed extract and a host of other antioxidants. I have suffered a few injuries, so my training has gone out the window. Being not-so-fit, I jumped at the opportunity to try a product that would help me get through a couple of events; OverDrive was that product. I took it for the first time before a sprint triathlon and I felt really good throughout the race and afterwards. I also used it before a cycle race and beat last year’s time (when I was a whole bunch fitter)! I am sold on this product and will continue to use it.

About Dry Skin Your skin needs moisture to stay smooth and supple. Severe cases of dry skin can cause discomfort, bleeding, itchiness and pain. What causes dry skin? • When oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin. • When skin gets exposed to the elements, especially in Winter. • Dry skin could be due to a genetic condition and can run in families. • Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins. • Environmental factors such as exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps. • Conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, or seborrhea. • Underlying medical problems e.g. an underactive thyroid, Diabetes and certain drugs (diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines). How can I prevent and treat dry skin? • Use lukewarm water when you bath or shower, as hot water dries out the skin. Limit your time to fifteen minutes or less once a day. If you bathe too frequently you will remove the natural oils from the skin, causing dryness. • Avoid using harsh soaps that dry the skin. Use a glycerine soap or aqueous cream to bath. Avoid soaps with antibacterial ingredients. • Avoid vigorous washing and drying. When towelling dry, do not rub the skin. Pat dry so there is still some moisture left on the skin. • Apply a good quality moisturiser to the skin immediately after a bath so that the moisturiser holds in the moisture. • Use a sun block of SPF 15 or more daily. • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin moist from the inside. Take multivitamins and essential fatty acids like flaxseed oil. If symptoms persist, see a dermatologist. Get good sleep: Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Toss out the tobacco: It’s never too late to quit. Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits. Move more: Adults need at least two and a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, and muscle strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups on two or more days a week. Eat healthy: Eat a variety of fruit and vegetables every day. Limit food and drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol. Choose healthy snacks. Tame stress: Sometimes stress can be good. However, it can be harmful when it is severe enough to make you feel overwhelmed and out of control. Take care of yourself – avoid drugs and alcohol. Find support, connect socially and stay active. Stay on top of your game: See your doctor or nurse for regular check-ups. Pay attention to signs and symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive thirst, and problems with urination. If you have any of these, be sure to see your doctor right away. Don’t wait! Visit www.cdc.gov/men for more information. www.mumsmail.com

Radiant ‘Winter’ Skin Winter is on our doorstep and some of you may already be experiencing drier, tighter and rosier skin associated with the reduced humidity and cool breeze. A few changes to your home care routine and aesthetic treatments will help to counteract the ageing effects of the drier climate and keep your skin looking radiant this winter. • Retinols are the ‘gold standard’ of antiageing treatment products with a wealth of clinical trials supporting their skin rejuvenating properties. Sensitive or dryer skin could be exacerbated by home-care SEad_29x45_190814.indd Retinol products, therefore reduce the frequency of application, using it every alternate evening or mixing it with your night-time moisturiser. • If you’re not already using products high in anti-oxidants and growth factors, Winter is a good time to start. These will support your skin’s regenerative and repair processes. • DO NOT forget about sunscreen. Sunscreen is as important in Winter as it is in Summer to prevent sun damage. • Go for regular deep cleansing and hydrating facial treatments to keep your skin healthy, radiant and hydrated. • Medical aesthetic treatments such as hyaluronic acid fillers and skin boosters are excellent treatments for keeping the skin soft, supple and smooth. They focus on skin hydration, restoring volume and hydrobalance, thereby improving skin structure and elasticity. • Winter is also a good time for selective, deeper chemical peels that can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and address that dreaded pigmentation. De-Stress with Sh’Zen A recent survey found that moms that work are the most stressed and lose nine to 16 years of their lives due to stress. The bow kept forever taught will break. So what can we do about it? 1. Manage your expectations – generally they are unrealistic and unspoken. It isn’t where you came from, it is where you are going that matters. 2. All of us need to ask assertively for what we want. Asking for help is a healthy way to stay strong. We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers. 3. Learn to say no to others so that you can say yes to yourself. Take care of your thoughts because they are powerful, but take even more care of your words because they are even more powerful. No is a complete sentence! How Sugar could be Impacting Your Child’s Behaviour As a Banting Buddy (a Low Carb High Fat Lifestyle Coach), Merle Westcott is often asked if there are benefits of the lifestyle for children. As an ex-high school teacher, she can tell you that the contents of your child’s lunchbox often impact on their behaviour and ability to concentrate. As does the breakfast that you feed them before they arrive at school. Merle says the benefits of cutting sugar in your child’s diet are significant: • Improves concentration. • Children are no longer continually hungry, as sugar promotes cravings – the more you eat the more you want. • Children sleep better and for some, unexplainable stomach aches will become a thing of the past. • One teacher said her pupils are no longer nodding off in class after break, since cutting sugar from their diets.

Providing your child a nutritionally balanced diet of quality animal protein, good carbohydrates and natural fats will set them up for the day. Read labels; you will soon see that most processed foods are laden with sugar, as are most low fat foods. “It’s frightening to think that 100ml of Yogi Sip contains more sugar than 100ml of Coke. We wouldn’t give our children Coke for breakfast but many of us would consider Yogi Sip to be a healthy option,” said Merle. “Rather give your child a good breakfast of bacon and egg, a lunchbox with some vegetable sticks, chunks of cheese, chicken pieces or leftovers from last night’s dinner.” Source: Merle Westcott, Banting Buddy, 082 925 5228, www.bantingbuddies.com.

Selfies: To Post or Not to Post? To post, or not to post, that is the question... Selfies are basically the modern version of the self-portrait. James Franco, a ‘selfie king’, says selfies are “tools of communication more than marks of vanity…” A selfie snapshot is a version of ourselves that we would like our friends to see and get a sense of who we are. What we have to be careful to remember is that this sense of who we are is created by us. We choose to post only the pictures that are perfect in our eyes. So does posting it really give us a sense of who you are, or does it give us a sense of who you would like us to see? Chris O’Shea says that by posting countless selfies, you might actually be sacrificing real life friendships and relationships. The selfie, although a form of self-expression, can also show a kind of self-obsession.

Clothes 2 Good Is your outreach project in need of funds? Do you want to support children with disabilities become mobile or plant trees? Please consider Clothes 2 Cash Exchange (C2CX) to help you do this by simply selling them used clothing that your pupils, staff or members, collect from their family, neighbours and friends. C2CX has been doing this for over two years now, through their simple and convenient programme, with no investment required by you. They ask organisations to collect clothing through their schools, communities, churches etc. and pay the organisation R5 per usable kilogram that they collect. The organisation can use these funds for their own outreach projects or for the Clothes to Wheels and Clothes to Trees programmes. They use the clothes to empower those less privileged by creating jobs for people to sort and bale the clothing, and by helping budding entrepreneurs to sell the clothing in their own communities. By selling them your clothes, you will see that there is a tangible economic and social impact! This is a great way to give away your clothing to a cause that generates income throughout the value chain to those who really need it. By selling your clothes to C2CX, you will no longer be giving a hand out, but a hand-up, to make our economy stronger and help people who used to rely on charity, become self-sufficient and learn new skills.

For more information visit www.c2cx.co.za and watch the Story of Clothes to Good Video to see the bigger picture. Find them on Facebook: Clothes to Cash Exchange.

Incredible Minds Adaptive Learning Centre Sheraine Reddy and Yugen Subraya are parents to nine-year-old Paris Subraya, who was diagnosed with autism and severe mental impairment at three-and-ahalf years old. Under the guidance of her parents, Paris has since gone on to have her amazing paintings at two exhibitions at Durban ArtSpace Gallery! They had very little success in both public special needs schooling and private remedial education for their daughter. Last year they decided to create an academic and sensory centre of excellence that caters for children with special educational needs. Sheraine resigned this year after 20 years in mainstream education and seven years of special education training and courses, to open Incredible Minds Adaptive Learning Centre in Durban North. It is a centre where each child is taught according to their specific style of learning. No child is required to learn according to traditional teaching methods, but instead the curriculum is adapted to suit the learning style of the child. Each child is taught from a strengthsbased approach, highlighting their abilities. Every child has a sensory profile done by an occupational therapist; addressing their sensory needs forms an integral part of the learning programme. A special state-ofthe-art sensory room was created, where the children are allowed at any time to relax. Sheraine has developed a reading programme specifically designed for visual learners, and has had great success with it. One of Sheraine and Yugen’s greatest passions is working with non-verbal children and they use various autism-specific approaches like the iPad, laptops, Makaton sign and Picture Exchange Communication to facilitate communication. The centre also provides speech therapy, occupational therapy, yoga, art and music therapy, sports and swimming. Contact Sheraine Reddy on 084 717 2397. www.mumsmail.com

Visually Impaired Children Visit uShaka uShaka Sea World staff were honoured to host 14 visually impaired children from Open Air School for a morning of marine exploration recently. Having learned about animals during the year, it was time to visit uShaka Sea World for some up close marine experiences.

After the enormous dolphins it was time to downsize and meet three baby turtles who could fit into the palm of the children’s hands. Then it was on to the reptiles, where they touched the lizards and even pythons!

Finally, it was time to meet the seals who greeted them with loud barks, much to their Of course they wanted to meet the dolphins amusement. first, with one young learner expressing a particular wish to meet Gambit. Before they were introduced to the dolphins they wanted to know what the dolphins ate and had a lot of fun feeling the sardines, squid and gelatine from the dolphins’ breakfast cooler boxes. They were all offered the opportunity to touch one of the dolphins. For some the whole experience was a bit too overwhelming but for others it was a dream come true and, abandoning the idea of keeping their uniforms dry, they waded into the water alongside the dolphins. Gambit kept very still and gentle while the Gambit and trainer, Kelly de Klerk, with little hands explored his body. Nakita Govender and Karabo Tsotetsi.

Fun Experiments to Try at Home Instant water freezing You will need: A cup, water, one teaspoon each of flour, sugar and salt. What to do: Fill half a glass with water and then put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. Take the glass of water out of the freezer and add one teaspoon of flour and one teaspoon of sugar, then stir for five seconds. Add one teaspoon of salt and watch what happens. So what? The process of starting the ice crystals is called nucleation. This starts from an impurity, which influences the freezing temperature. A great example is salt which is used to lower the freezing temperature of water, or a piece of dust on the cup containing the water. One ice crystal attaches to the imperfection, and the others grow on top. What if the water does not have an imperfection or impurity? Nucleation cannot begin, and the water

stays in its liquid state, even in temperatures below freezing. Rain formation You will need: A clear glass, warm water and an ice cube. What to do: Fill the glass to the top with warm water. Gently lower in the ice cube, making sure you don’t spill any water over the edge of the glass. Watch the water level carefully as the ice cube melts. So what? The water level in the glass does not increase because the temperature in the glass drops and water droplets form around the glass, therefore causing the level to remain the same and the droplets flow outside the glass. Child Mindfulness: Be Present with Your Children

EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST FELICITY TONkINSON T.T. Dip., BSocSc, BEd, MEd (Ed Psych) Practice No.: 086 000 0115940

How much time do you spend with your children each day? 20 minutes? One hour? Eight hours? Now how much of that time that you’re spending together, are you truly present? Children are smart and intuitive. They know when you’re not really with them, sometimes before you’re even aware of it. How often do we sit with our children to watch a movie, while keeping our phones next to us to keep in touch with the rest of the world? What happened to the big event of watching a movie together and then chatting about it afterwards? Now we ‘watch’ lots of movies that we’re hardly present for. How many other events aren’t we present for when we’re with our children? Our children might start to seem more demanding and want more of our time, but it’s actually quality time they’re craving. We need to be more present with them during the times that we are together. Rather spend 20 minutes truly engaging with your child, than hours with them being distracted. Try these five things when you’re with your child: 1. Eat a meal with her and guide her to enjoy the taste sensations of each mouthful with you. 2. When he tells you a story, look at him and show your undivided interest in what he says. 3. When you watch a movie together, only watch the movie. Put your phone/iPad/ computer away. 4. Get outdoors! Walk holding hands and take time to look at the trees, the leaves, the clouds. 5. Go to a park and make pushing him on the swing a Zen practice – feel the relaxation in the repetitive movement. Grans For Hire

cia

u La L

Durban-based Grans For Hire is a niche referral agency dedicated to providing families with the highest quality, nurturing child-care and household help. They specialise in placing mature, caring women with life experience with families as nannies, babysitters, tutors, home coordinators, cooks, domestic trainers, drivers, carers, pet and house sitters. As a busy working mother, Leigh Newell soon began to appreciate the support her own mother and mother-in-law gave her family. Their patience and love was invaluable and she soon realised that without their support, she could not have managed to find the balance between work and family. Many families do not have the luxury of grandparents living nearby to support their everyday lives. Another inspiration to founding Grans For Hire was when Leigh saw many active and healthy retirees that were looking for either additional stimulation or income. “I thought this would be a great opportunity for families and retirees to be a perfect match for each other’s needs,” explained Leigh. Most of their candidates are mothers/grandmothers and have previous experience with children, pets and the running of a home. Many of them are retired teachers, architects or administrators and are active, able, wise, qualified women who have the spare time. “We understand that inviting someone to work within your home is a very big and personal decision. We appreciate that every family’s requirements are different and we take great pride in listening to and discussing your needs indepth,” said Leigh.

Arty Party Games Why not showcase your guests’ creative talents with an awesome art-themed party? Here are some arty game ideas to get you started.

FOR AGES 5 & UP

Write the name of each guest on a strip of paper. Sit the children in a circle and give each a drawing pad, a pencil and a name strip, making sure everyone gets someone else’s name. Tell the artists they have 10 minutes to draw portraits of the people whose names they have. When the portraits are complete, have the artists hold up their drawings one at a time as the rest of the group try to guess who it is. It won’t be easy!

HOLIDAY BOOT CAMP ON 13 & 14 July

Seat the children on the floor in a circle. Place drawing pads and pencils flat on the floor in front of them. Set an object, such as a fruit bowl or teddy bear, in the centre of the circle. Ask the children to remove their shoes and draw the object with one foot. When everyone is finished, take a vote on the best picture and award the winner a prize. To make the game more challenging, limit the drawing time. Tape several large sheets of paper to the wall and provide lots of art materials. Have the group decide on a theme, such as ‘life of a school kid’, ‘going on a picnic’ or ‘Summer’. Place each child at a section of the mural and ask them to create an artwork that goes with the theme. When everyone is finished, stand back and admire the mural. After everyone has studied the mural, ask the artists to explain how their sections tie in with the theme.

To make your bubble mixture: Dissolve the corn starch in the water, stirring really well. Then gently stir in the remaining ingredients. Avoid creating a lot of froth. Allow your mixture to sit for at least an hour, stirring occasionally if you see the corn starch settling to the bottom. The more bubbles you make, the better the mixture gets! How to make a bubble wand for your homemade giant bubbles: Use two drinking straws, and a length of string that is six to eight times longer than the length of one straw. Thread the yarn through the straws, tie a knot and you’re good to go! This homemade giant bubble mix really does make the biggest bubbles ever and is great for all ages!

Emdoneni Lodge

Interact with Cheetahs Emdoneni Lodge and Game Farm in Hluhluwe offers guests intimate and comfortable Hluhluwe game lodge accommodation on a dinner, bed and breakfast or B&B basis, allowing guests to sample the delights of true South African hospitality and cuisine. Before and after dinner, you can enjoy evening drinks around the fire, at the boma or on the sundowner deck. The aim of the Emdoneni Cat Rehabilitation Centre is to care for cheetahs, serval cats, African wildcats and caracal (lynx), which have been orphaned or injured in the wild and are in need of care and rehabilitation. They also breed where possible and release the offspring back into their natural habitat. There are educational tours daily, with feedings during the afternoon tour and an informative talk about the animals and the project by an experienced guide. Interaction with all cats is also an option! The centre successfully bred their female cheetah, Autumn, at Cheetah Experience in Bloemfontein recently. As their two males are infertile, they sent Autumn there to breed. She fell pregnant and gave birth to three cubs in February. Autumn returned to Emdoneni with one male cub. The new male cub is named Storm and will be used for breeding purposes. The owners are thrilled to announce that Emdoneni Lodge is a nominee in the world’s most prestigious awards initiative for luxury hotels, the World Luxury Hotel Awards 2015. “This nomination inspired us and confirmed that with hard work and commitment, anything is possible! It taught us to continue doing what we do best – serving our guests and helping to make their dreams come true,” said owners, Louis and Cecillie Nel. June is World Blood Donor Month and Sunday 14 June is International World Blood Donor Day. The 2015 World Blood Donor Day theme is “thank you for saving my life”. It focuses on thanking blood donors who save lives every day through their blood donations. It also strongly encourages more people all over the world to donate blood voluntarily and regularly, with the slogan “Give freely, give often. Blood donation matters”. During World Blood Donor Month, and especially on World Blood Donor Day, the knowledge that people’s lives are saved through blood donations on a daily basis will hopefully motivate regular donors to continue giving blood. People who are in good health and have never given blood, particularly young people, are encouraged to start doing so.
