No rest for the wicked… or is there?

Meet bestselling international author lesley Pearse

After a very busy March, which was spent finalising plans for the 4th Annual Mum’s Mail PMB Ladies ‘Vintage’ Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund, and which I’m pleased to announce was a HUGE success. We raised over R50 000! It was then followed by an equally busy but not quite so stressful April - although there is ALWAYS a deadline lurking around the corner that I can’t seem to run away from..!

Lesley will be at the Durban Country Club on 15 May at 12h00 promoting her latest novels. Tickets are R255 (includes a delicious lunch & complimentary drink). RSVP to admin@booksandbooks.co.za or call 031 563 6288.

My family and I have been lucky enough to go camping not once but 3 times during the month of April, thanks to all the public holidays! We have visited the beautiful ‘Silver Streams’ resort in Underberg and spent the Easter break at ‘Bazley Beach Caravan Resort’ near Scottburgh, where the kids made new friends almost immediately. I won R700 on the Bingo and we all had a fantastic and super chilled time. Sitting out in the evening with a glass of wine by an open fire is wonderful, especially now that the weather is cooling down, phew! Hubby really doesn’t enjoy the heat so he was very happy…but I do love the sunshine, although I am enjoying the relief of the cooler days and nights that we’ve had more recently!

Meet the Cover Stars

Meet the Cover Stars Kairav and Tharshey Gurayah are our handsome cover stars for May. The twins were born on 25 October 2013 to mum Jayrusha Ramasamy-Gurayah and dad Dhesigan Gurayah. Dhesigan is in business banking and Jayrusha is a lecturer in supply chain management at UKZN. The boys are three-and-a-half years old and are fraternal twins – which means they shared the womb together but grew in different sacks. Kairav developed a heart condition at three weeks and they nearly lost him, but he made a full recovery. Although there are many similarities between the boys, their personalities are very different. They love each other immensely and cannot go on for long periods of time without each other. Kairav calls his brother ‘Tash’ and Tharshey calls his brother ‘Kaidy’. “We have a family tradition for Sunday morning breakfast – they love everyone being together at the breakfast table, enjoying a conversation and on Saturday night they will tell you what the breakfast menu will be,” says Jayrusha. Kairav is an extrovert – he’s sociable, can talk your head off, he loves the outdoors, riding his bike and has an ardent passion for cars and everything associated with automobiles. He loves nature – Mitchell Park is his favourite place to ride his bikes, meet new people and visit the animals inside the park.

with people and circumstances. He slowly comes around once he sees how happy his brother is. Tharshey loves building puzzles and can put a 45 to 50 piece puzzle together on his own with very little help. He also loves trains and Thomas is his best buddy. Both boys love reading – Daddy reads a story every night before bed, they love this time that the three spend together. The naughtiest, scariest thing they have ever done together is climb out of a window at home and sit by the pool having a chat – that’s where their aunt found them! “When my babies were born we needed a lot of help from my wonderful mom, aunt and sister-inlaw. They all played a vital role in the first year; they offered unconditional love, care and support both to my husband and me,” explains Jayrusha. With Mother’s Day coming up in May, Jayrusha has this advice to share with new moms: “Motherhood is a very private, beautiful and individual journey. Of all the roles in life nothing is as treasured as the joy of having to nurture and watch a child grow and develop through so many stages of life. Nothing is faultless and there is no way to be a ‘perfect’ mother. Just do the very best you can every day, spend time bonding with your child, receive the challenges and difficulties as they come, accept your child for who he or she may be, be proud of the love that you share, knowing that you will do your best every day for your child’s wellbeing.” Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Tharshey is a very shy and courteous child and takes his time to familiarise himself 9

• I would like to compliment you on a great magazine. I used to get Mum’s Mail from the Durban North library when I lived in Phoenix, and I recently moved to Pinetown and was so home sick, away from my mum, friends and my comfort zone. I was so delighted when my daughter brought home a copy of the magazine from her school in Westville, I felt like I found a piece of me that I had left behind. My daughter and I love reading Mum’s Mail cover to cover and now we found something that reminds us of Phoenix. Thank you again for such awesome articles. Sagree Moodley.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas We have scoured the internet for some novel ideas for Mother’s Day – here are some great home-made gift ideas that the kids can make for mom – with a bit of help from dad!

Mini succulent garden

Buy a few mini succulents at your local nursery. Find a nice colourful pot. Fill the bottom of the bowl with small stones/rocks. Put a layer of soil on top. One at a time, plant each succulent, scooping and packing in the cactus soil wherever needed and pushing everything in tightly. Source: www.homeyohmy.com.

DIY Peppermint Sugar Body Scrub

Mix a 3/4 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup coconut oil, about 10 drops peppermint essential oil (add to your own preference) in a bowl or zip lock bag and mix well. Once mixed, put it into a clean glass jar with a lid that seals – make sure the mouth is wide enough for mom to fit her hand in to grab a handful. Decorate your jar with red bakers twine and a gift tag. In a clean jar this Sugar Scrub will keep for up to two months and it’s the PERFECT winter bath time product! Source: www.emmaowl.com.

DIY Bath Bombs

Recipe is two parts baking soda, one part citric acid, spritz of witch hazel, fragrance oil and colourant (adjust to your preference). Mix baking soda and citric acid in a bowl and work out all the clumps. Add the fragrance oil – the amount is up to you. Thoroughly mix into the powders. Now add your colourant. You can ONLY use non-water based liquid colour, or it will start fizzing. Thoroughly mix into the powders, using your fingers to break up colour clumps. Add the witch hazel using a spray bottle. Use about four spritzes to get the mixture to clump in your hand – as soon as your mixture makes a nice clump – it’s ready! Add the mixture to a mini muffin pan, making sure to REALLY pack the mixture HARD into your mould – this is what will keep your bomb together. When the tray is completely packed, set a timer for 10 minutes and let them sit. After the time is up, carefully turn them onto a sheet of wax paper to let them fully dry. These need to dry for a few hours before moving them. Carefully put them into a pretty glass jar and decorate with a gift card or label. Source: www.somethingturquoise.com.

Mom, Can You ‘Shrink’ the Kids?

Must both parents consent for a child to receive treatment, or an assessment, by a psychologist? Often, this is asked by the psychologist or psychiatrist, herself. The simple answer is – “No, either parent has the right (and often, the duty) to consent to medical and other health care for a child.”

The Children’s Act makes it clear that a mother, whether married or not, has the full array of parental ‘responsibilities and rights’ in regard to her child. A married father has equal powers and in certain circumstances an unmarried father has the same responsibilities and rights. If in doubt about the status of unmarried fathers, you should obtain legal advice.

not hesitate to take their children (or themselves) to get whatever care may have been recommended, but fathers frequently oppose this, especially when a psychologist is involved. The reasons given are many and varied, but the opposition arises frequently from a man’s fear of having his child’s (or his) vulnerability exposed. In other words, it appears to be based on a protective instinct. Sometimes, it is seen as ‘controlling’. In either case, I point out that the parental powers of mother and father are usually equal, unless specifically limited by a court order. My advice to the mental health care professionals is to go ahead, unless the father’s lawyers produce a strong legal case to stop that care.

For reasons of ignorance or perhaps to hide the truth, a father might refuse to give consent to having his child seen by a mental health professional. More often than not, I find that mothers do

PMDD Can Be Tamed For many women, their menstrual cycle can become a nightmare due to altered hormone levels and that may cause Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), a mood disorder characterised by significant low mood levels in the luteal (second) phase of the menstrual cycle. This may severely affect their general and mental well-being. Symptoms Common symptoms include depressed mood, anxiety and panic attacks, marked irritability, feelings of being overwhelmed, difficulty concentrating, fatigue and even suicidal thoughts. “Women with PMDD are not ‘weak’, nor do they have ‘unstable personalities’. PMDD is not all in your head. – it is a diagnosable medical illness that can and should be treated by a medical professional, explains Dr Vythilingum, a psychiatrist based at Akeso Psychiatric Clinic in Kenilworth, Cape Town. Cause “During the menstrual cycle there is a gradual rise in oestrogen that peaks just before ovulation and falls at the time of ovulation. After ovulation, oestrogen rises again, but to lower levels than normal. The dominant hormone at this time is progesterone, which peaks just before you get your period, when both hormone levels fall. It is this second half of the cycle, called the luteal phase, when women with PMDD experience symptoms. Treatment PMDD is best treated through a combination of approaches – medication, psychological and lifestyle changes, Dr Vythilingum points out. The good news, however, is that PMDD is a treatable mood disorder and that “most women with appropriate treatment, recover completely,” concludes Dr Vythilingum. Support from family and friends is also vital and you should seek the help of an experienced therapist.

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness May is International Multiple Sclerosis Month. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating condition that has been baffling the medical world for more than a century. According to medical science there is no cure for MS and a minuscule understanding as to what causes this condition. MS affects the brain and spinal cord, a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease.

marked by weakness, numbness, a loss of muscle coordination, extreme fatigue and problems with vision, speech and bladder control. Depression in its various forms is one of the most common and challenging symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Extreme heat and the slightest form of stress make the condition worse. Surrounding an MS patient with love, respect and understanding ignites healing. The MS symptoms can become severe at any time of the day. MS patients need the support and encouragement of their family, friends, work colleagues and community to manage and cope with this devastating condition.

How Can Chiropractic Help You? The Chiropractic Adjustment corrects neuromusculo-skeletal imbalances in the body called a subluxation, fixation or misalignment. By adjusting your spine, joints and muscles, you alleviate pressure off your nervous system, which is the primary controller of all functions throughout your body. Pressure is also alleviated off your circulatory system, allowing for improved blood flow and oxygen to all your organs, tissues and cells throughout your body. By adjusting your whole body you stimulate the natural opiates in your body called endorphins. This gives you that ‘enhanced energy-feel good’ experience, just like you feel during and after beneficial exercise.

Chiropractic therefore, can also be seen as a form of exercise that stimulates your body in a specific manner, allowing your bodily systems to be free of restrictions, to express your full healing potential. This whole body approach is a proactive one for your general health and wellness. It prevents problems from building up, stimulates and enhances your energy levels. Pain and symptoms disappear when you maintain your body, spine and nervous system in optimum working order. We are reminded that something is wrong with our health when we experience some kind of pain, sign or symptom. Physical symptoms are very often the last thing to show up, and as you get older, it can be too late. The absence of pain does not necessarily mean that you are healthy in mind and body. Your body is amazing in that it puts up with a great deal of stress and abuse before symptoms and illness appear. Be proactive about your health and take the steps to prevent the build-up that results in chronic fatigue, insomnia, pain and illness. By Dr Warren van Zyl, www.drwarrenvanzyl.com. www.mumsmail.com

E N T E R TA I N I N G IS EFFORTLESS! HERE’S HOW

Buy a whole frozen gâteaux, place it in your freezer before it defrosts and store for up to 12 months. •

Defrost in the refrigerator overnight in original packaging, or at room temperature out of packaging for ±90 minutes, and serve. •

Alternatively cut individual slices, keep the remainder of the gâteaux in the freezer and defrost just the slices you wish to serve. •

Always use a long, sharp knife, dipping in very hot water before each stroke. •

Once defrosted don’t re-freeze, but keep the remainder in the refrigerator, for up to 3 days… If you can last that long! •

Once the seal is broken, always lift the box by the base and not the lid.

World No Tobacco Day World No Tobacco Day, observed on 31 May, is an initiative run by the World Health Organization (WHO). The aim of this event is to inform the public about the dangers of using tobacco and make them aware of the business practices of tobacco companies. World No Tobacco Day also aims to educate people about the work that WHO undertakes in fighting the global tobacco epidemic. A large part of this work is educating the public about the manipulative tactics tobacco companies use to ‘dupe’ people into smoking their products.

Tobacco companies spend billions of dollars on advertising each year, portraying people who smoke as being cool, glamorous, macho and having other valued after traits. In truth, cigarettes are highly engineered products designed to cause addiction and which often kill. Cigarettes are highly addictive due to the presence of nicotine in the tobacco. However, over the years executives from the major tobacco companies have denied this. Whilst there are more restrictions on how tobacco companies can advertise their products in developed countries, in other parts of the world people are still subjected to the more aggressive and manipulative advertising tactics. Smoking and Increased Health Risks Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to develop heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. Smoking is estimated to increase the risk for: • Coronary heart disease by two to four times • Stroke by two to four times • Of men developing lung cancer by 25 times • Of women developing lung cancer by 25.7 times

A Holistic Approach to Acne Acne is an uncomfortable condition that we hope to be rid of following our teenage years, but often need to deal with in our adult years. When the skin reacts with acne or pimples, it is telling us that something in the body is not well. Early management is very important. Best results are achieved with early detection, combined with the correct treatments and a healthy lifestyle. Acne is the formation of blackheads, pimples, nodules and cysts in more severe cases and can be classified as mild, moderate or severe inflammatory acne.

Mild acne does not necessarily require a doctor’s consult, and can be treated with medical skincare products. The natural instinct, however, when dealing with acne is to clear the skin, resulting in over exfoliation, or treatments that are too harsh for the condition. This may dry the skin out causing further breakouts that may worsen the condition.

In severe cases, patients are often put on medication that causes damage to the internal system. At Skin Renewal, a more holistic approach is followed. In these cases doctors may include lifestyle checks, gut health tests and blood tests in order to get to the root of the problem, in conjunction with topical treatments. Treatment options include deep cleanse facials, extraction peels and lasers among others, with a combination of these treatments showing best results. How to Effectively Treat Acute Coughs in Children

NICOLA BUHR Educational Psychologist

Coughs are common in school age children, occurring seven to 10 times a year. A cough is a particularly bothersome symptom that tends to resolve slowly; half of children recover by 10 days and 90% by 25 days, suggesting that 10% of children still cough three to four weeks after falling ill. Although coughing is an important reflex defence mechanism to protect a child’s lungs and keep them clear, it can have a major impact on a child’s sleep, school performance and ability to play. A coughing child also disturbs other family members’ sleep and may be disruptive in the classroom, causing parents considerable anxiety. Coughs are classified as acute or chronic. An acute cough lasts less than three weeks. A chronic cough lasts more than eight weeks and is usually associated with conditions such as asthma, allergy, post-viral cough and postnasal drip.

How is an acute cough treated? Most acute coughs are caused by viruses, which makes antibiotics generally ineffective. However, parents frequently seek over-the-counter medicines to relieve their child’s cough. Given that a cough can last up to four weeks, parents need to seek more effective treatment methods for their children. Evidence for the effectiveness of cough mixtures is not convincing. A closer look at mucolytics Mucus in our lungs is held together by disulfide bonds. Mucolytics work by breaking these bonds. When these bonds are broken, the mucus becomes less sticky/thick and is easier to cough up. This can make it harder for germs to infect the mucus and cause chest infections. Mucolytics are useful to alleviate coughing, mucus production and airway obstruction. Source: www.bespokecomms.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Making Exam Preparation A Little Easier For Your Teen Exams are stressful, not only for your teen, but for you too. There’s the pressure of ensuring your teen is sufficiently prepared so that they do their best on the day of the exam, and sometimes there’s also the anxiety about not feeling adequately equipped to help your teen with those key concepts that they are struggling with. Teachers often don’t have enough time to get through all the work they need to, and the textbook covers the curriculum, but doesn’t necessarily help prepare your teen for the exam. To complicate things even further, your child as an individual has their own unique learning style.

guides were developed. These guides cover the Department of Education’s CAPS curriculum, as well as the IEB curriculum. They cover most of the major subjects taken at school from Grade 8 to Grade 12. But the real value is in the way these study guides deal with individual learning styles. Ace it! helps your teen to determine what type of learner they are. It then helps your teen learn key concepts based on their learning style. So, whether your child is an auditory, visual or kinaesthetic learner, Ace it! will help them be sufficiently prepared, so that they do their best in the exam.

Many parents opt for sending their teens to They’re all your teen (and you!) needs to extra lessons with tutors, and even though ACE their exam. these can be effective, they cost a lot of Ace it! is available from most good money and you still aren’t guaranteed that book stores or from they are getting the personal attention www.aceitstudyguides.co.za. they deserve. That’s why Ace it! study

You may have seen a rainbow in a water fountain or in the mist of a waterfall and you can even make your own like you did in this experiment. What you’ll need: Rainbows form in the sky when sunlight • A glass of water (about three quarters full) refracts (bends) as it passes through rain White paper drops – it acts in the same way when it • A sunny day passes through your glass of water. The sunlight refracts, separating it into the Instructions: colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue, • Take the glass of water and paper to a part indigo and violet. of the room with sunlight (near a window is good). • Hold the glass of water above the paper and watch as sunlight passes through the glass of water, refracts (bends) and forms a rainbow of colours on your sheet of paper. • Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles to see if it has a different effect. Birthday Pamper Parties!

This delightful hedgehog cake is sure to be a huge hit at a kiddies’ birthday party! Ingredients • Your favourite chocolate cake mix • Chocolate icing • Chocolate buttons • White chocolate buttons • Milk chocolate drops • Milk chocolate ball Method • Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease two cake tins or line with greaseproof paper. • Mix up a batch of your favourite chocolate cake batter. • Pour the cake mix evenly into your two greased cake tins. • Bake in the centre of the oven for 23 to 28 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes in the tin then cool on a cooling rack. • Ice a thin, even layer of icing over the top of one cake and gently press the other cake on top. Cut off a section from each side and a point at the bottom of the cake. • Cut the point of the cake at an angle to create a nose. • Ice a thin layer of icing over the top of the cake and stack the offcuts on top to form the shape of the hedgehog. Apply more icing to the whole cake, then place in the fridge for 30 minutes. Once set, apply another layer of icing all over the cake. • Cut the chocolate buttons in half and place in rows along the cake to create the hedgehog’s spines. • Create eyes using white chocolate buttons and chocolate drops as pupils. Finish off with a milk chocolate ball for the nose.

extravagant floral arrangements, all work well to personalise your display. • Finally, personalised décor items and touches are key to creating a unique dessert display – simple elements such as unique labels, or laser cut words and names add a fun, personal touch to your sweetie table. Et Voila! A delicious way to add a ‘Posh’ touch of decadence to your next event.

• Start off your display with a gorgeous tablecloth to match your event’s theme. A glass table will provide an elegant touch for an adult event. • Strategically place an assortment of beautiful sweetie jars and vases, platters and mirror boxes along your table. Be mindful of placing taller vases and jars towards the back of the table. • Fill the vases with your favourite colour-coded sweets, and arrange your baked treats on platters or mirrors. To keep your table looking styled and posh, opt for a larger variety of smaller jars and keep different types of sweets and treats separate where possible. • A beautiful backdrop will add a special touch to your setup.
