Earth Day Fundraiser
Earth Day, celebrated annually 22 April, marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement nearly 50 years ago. According to ‘World Scientist’s Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice’, human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. The paper puts forward a range of actions that can be taken by humanity to avert disaster. Connecting children to nature and exposing them to experiential environmental learning is the passion of a group of over 25 environmental educators from a range of environmental organisations. This year marks the sixth anniversary of the Happy Earth Festival to be held in the beautiful KZN National Botanical Gardens, Pietermaritzburg on 19 and 20 April. Organised by the Happy Earth Environmental Education and Sustainability Forum, this event aims to host 1750 learners, many of whom are children from disadvantaged rural and township schools and are in need of funding assistance for transport and snacks. Celebrate Earth Day
this year by helping to create awareness of the natural environment and our human responsibilities towards it, by sponsoring a child for R100 to attend the festival. These direct experiences in nature, under the guidance of positive mentorship, are cited as the single biggest contributor leading to positive environmental behaviour and future environmental leadership. As the world goes dark for Earth Day 2018, you can ignite a love for our natural world in the heart of a child, and help light the pathway that will lead us all into the right relationship with the Earth. Embrace the Winter Chill in Style
As winter approaches, fashion designer and mom, Ruwaida Vawda, has some winter style tips for our readers. Take a hint from celeb kids and the young royals; they pave the way for the influential trend list. Make sure your little ones are trending, whether for a play date or a party, with these tips that are stylish and warm. Tweed: word on the runway is that we are returning to classics! With the rate they grow, oversized coats work well for mum and baby. Leggings with everything: a mum’s best friend. Personalise your look with layering; the combinations are endless. Puffer jackets: winter is no longer synonymous with shades of grey; metallic puffer jackets with neutral inners are a winner. Bleached denim: jackets and jeans – a wardrobe staple that is season-friendly at any time of year. Corduroys: it’s back to basics this season, comfortable and on trend.
Style hack: need an instant pick me up? The answer is simple – infinity scarves! Depending on print, this is a hit for boys and girls. All you need is a piece of fabric, scissors and basic sewing kit. For an adult the length is 60 inches, and for children, 48 inches. Once cut, fold fabric in half, lengthwise, pattern end inward. Stitch together, leaving one end open to turn on reverse, hand stitch neatly and puff up. And best news – no ironing required. Add motifs, beads or appliqué. There are a variety of ways to wear it, and twinning with the little ones has never been easier. Fashion empowers us to embrace our personal style. Look good with minimal changes. We can glam up our lives – after all, we deserve to look like luxury, and this directly impacts how you feel on the inside – this is the kind of ‘happily ever after’ that lasts forever. Fun Easter Game: Glitter Confetti Eggs
Confetti eggs (aka Cascarones) are like mini piñatas for your head. Traditionally, hollowed out eggs are broken over the head of a friend, showering them with confetti… and supposedly good luck.
hole at the top an egg. Open up a larger hole at the bottom of the larger part of an egg. Let the egg drain out of the larger hole into a bowl, blowing the residue out through the small pin hole in the top of the egg if you need to encourage the yolk out a little more quickly. Rinse the egg shell (you can add a little bleach to get rid of the egg smell) and allow it to dry. Use dye (or vinegar and food colouring) to colour the eggshell and allow it to dry thoroughly. Fill the egg about halfway with confetti (or whatever you decide to put inside). Cut a piece of tissue paper slightly larger in size than the egg’s hole. Glue the paper to the edges of the hole.
Party Rules Hide your confetti eggs as you would normal eggs, and let your friends go hunting for them. Once everyone has collected the eggs, the *kindly* smashing upon heads begins. No throwing eggs! Proper egg-smashing etiquette requires your hand to come in contact with the other person’s head so that you aren’t hitting anyone too hard or poking anyone’s eyes out. The lucky winner who gets the glitter egg smashed on their head goes home with the Voila - your eggs are filled. You are ready to grand prize of the day. party! Add the rice cereal a cup at a time, gently folding it into the marshmallow mixture, until all of the cereal is incorporated. Scoop 1/4 cup portions of the Rice Krispie treats into the prepared muffin tray. Wet your hands and press the Rice Krispies into a cup or tart-shape. Place in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight to set. When the nests have had a chance to set and harden, pop them out of the muffin tray using a butter knife and fill with treats. Easter Crafts Paper Bunny Craft These little bunnies will make a great decoration on your Easter table. You could even hide them around the house or in the backyard for an Easter egg hunt. What you need: • Construction paper (various colours, Easter tones) • Scissors • Glue • Googly eyes or markers Cut two strips of paper (about 1.5 inch wide). Roll each strip into the roll and add glue to form a tube (the one for the head a little bit narrower than the body one). Once that is dry, glue the rolls together (use two paper clips to hold the rolls together while the glue dries). Cut two ears and two inner parts of the ears (or draw them with the marker). Cut the bottom part – a base with two bunny legs. Glue the base onto the bottom part of the body roll. Let it dry. Stick the ears on the head part. Add googly eyes and draw facial details. Hop, hop!

Kneading the dough a couple times can help make it smoother. Roll it out and cut out desired shapes. Place the cut-outs on the parchment-covered baking sheets. Remember to make a hole so you can hang the ornaments – a straw works perfectly! Bake at 120°C for two hours. Directions for salt dough Easter eggs Once the shapes are adequately baked, dried and then thoroughly cooled, it’s painting time. Spray paint or acrylics work well. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
