Editor’s Life I would like to dedicate this Women’s month issue to a very special lady, Liz Victor, the founder and owner of the TopTots franchise who has been an advertiser since the very first issue of Mum’s Mail. Liz has been fighting cancer and sadly passed away on 14 July at the young age of 48. The following extract is from a eulogy by Melodie de Jager that was read out at her memorial service: “Liz burst into my life with a beaming smile, tons of energy, ideas, passion, positivity, enthusiasm. She had the same effect on me as a fireworks display on a clear summer evening. Liz was larger than life...mmm, I’m sure I can hear her reply: but I AM larger than most! And THAT is my Lizzy...a woman with an unquenchable spirit and a sense of humour. A humour that was cultivated in her ouerhuis where jokes and pranks filled their home and shaped her life to be the dynamo that she was...no, still is, because what Liz did on this earth will echo in eternity. And in the lives of Charl and Jean-Marie and the lives of thousands of other children across the globe. Liz’s impact will not only echo in children, but also in the lives of everyone who has ever had the privilege of experiencing Liz. No one just met Liz, one experienced Liz. And like we want a majestic fireworks display to go on, we wanted Liz to go on, but it doesn’t and she didn’t. And now we are left feeling dazed and robbed. Liz leaves an unforgettable and colourful impression as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a friend, a colleague, a business woman, an author, a speaker, a TV personality, the queen of branding and a shaper of lives.”

PMB Man Brought Back To Life!

After suffering a heart attack on the squash court, a 54-year-old Pietermaritzburg man was brought back to life after 70 minutes. Friends and paramedics described it as a miracle when, after having no pulse for over an hour, and being shocked with defibrillator paddles 11 times, he was resuscitated. Jeremy Cockburn collapsed during a league squash match between Hilton and Richmond squash clubs. Someone called SA Can who alerted the nearest paramedic, Carla Potgieter. She was amazed at the recovery and said she was talking and laughing with Jeremy the next day. She also explained that the quick actions of his team mates and opponents also helped save him. When he collapsed they immediately began doing compressions on his chest. Although he was technically dead, Potgieter said she could see he was trying to fight, so she decided to continue with the resuscitation. Jeremy’s family said he was recovering at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, but was not out of the woods yet.

Wings, Wheels and Whistles Since 2005 the Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society has annually hosted the Wings, Wheels and Whistles hobby exhibition, and every year it has grown bigger and more popular than the year before. On 2 and 3 August the station will come alive as trains arrive and depart to take the winding track through one of the most scenic layouts in the country, not forgetting the steep climbs that Natal is famous for.
